Lifestyle Letter

Happy July W

e’ve put together a July issue packed with love, for summer. Alexa Lampasona went the distance and brought us “Three Trails, Three Ways,” for biking, hiking and running on trails around the Perimeter. Most of these paths are shady and offer an opportunity to dip your roasting toes into a cool river or lake, so get outside this month! Then, you can reward your efforts with a cool beverage at one of Sandy Springs’ hot spots. Our friends at the Sandy Springs Hospitality & Tourism office shared their fave restaurants, patios and bars for summer sipping. Any season is the right season for smart savings, so we met with former Dunwoody Mayor Mike Davis, who is a trustee with the Jonathan D. Rosen Family Foundation’s Wealthy Habits project. "I'm a huge believer in the need for financial literacy and have been dismayed at how little people understand the basic concepts of saving and compound interest. Starting early with teenagers is the right time to learn these truths,” Mike says. He’s “retired,” but can be found in the Dunwoody Chamber of Commerce office, on the golf course or in his garden. Enjoy your garden, or wherever you are happiest this summer. Have a safe and celebratory month and keep in touch,

ast week during a Target trip with my 8-year-old son, I began to question our future generation’s perception of money. As I was thinking (out loud) if I really needed everything we tossed into our red cart, my son responded, “Mommy, you can get everything you want, just use your card.” Quickly and dramatically I then ditched 90% of what was in our cart (well I did need a few things) and explained right then and there how many hours of work each necessity would “cost my card.” NOT using my inside voice I shrieked “This small lamp? Converts to 1.5 hours of my pay. This Lego birthday present for your friend? Yep, that’s another half hour! These super cute file folders and Star Wars shirt? Totally going back!!” His eyes were rolling and mine were bulging. How had I done such a poor job of laying a foundation with my son for sound financial decision making? Queue the Wealthy Habits course offered by the Jonathon D. Rosen Family Foundation. The program for children teaching wise money management was founded right here, and Rosen has deep ties to our community. Jonathan Rosen is CEO of Entaire Global Companies Inc. in Dunwoody. Former Dunwoody mayor, Mike Davis serves on Wealthy Habits' board of trustees. "I met Jonathan early in my term as mayor. He was one of the corporate leaders I met with daily in my effort to better understand why all these companies have settled in Dunwoody and what as a city we can do to keep them here," says Davis. "Jonathan and I immediately hit it off and shared stories of all the people we have known who weren't making the effort to save for retirement. It's frightening to realize how many adults don't take even minimum advantage of their employers 401k plans." Executive Director Tracy Tanner was kind enough to tell me more. Tanner explains that the goal of the Wealthy Habits program is to help build financial awareness and responsibilities within middle and high school aged students in a FUN and interactive

manner. Fresh off my Target showdown that was anything but “fun,” I ask her how they make this exciting for the kids. Her friendly smile lights up with my question, and she tells me about one of the games kids play where they are given a salary and then have to decide what they will spend it on. She goes on to tell me at first the kids think, "Whoah $45,000 a year," but quickly realize how fast it goes (especially the percentage straight to taxes!). Offering one- to five-day programs, both during the week and weekends predominantly in the summer, local families are lining up to help their kids. Rosen Foundation day camps routinely have waiting lists because at camp, get kids into cool conversations at even cooler destinations like the Federal Reserve building. With nominal fees, The Rosen Family Foundation, with the support of corporate and personal donors, is trying to make the program affordable. Scholarships are offered, too. Topics range from earning money and paying expenses to budgeting, saving, credit and debt to owning your own business, and paying taxes. The course actively plays out every situation and requires the students to create their own financial scenarios, such as coming up with a budget and calculating 20.9% interest on a $10,000 credit card balance. By the end of the course it’s crystal clear to graduates exactly how the financial choices they make will impact their future. Besides the week and weekend programs during the summer, Wealthy Habits also partners with schools and universities, and is on a mission to educate teachers so that they can use the curriculum into schools. Wealthy Habits is definitely working to change one student at a time, giving them tools and knowledge for handing their money. "I'm a huge believer in the need for financial literacy and have been dismayed at how little people understand the basic concepts of saving and compound interest. Starting early with teenagers is the right time to learn these truths," says Mike Davis. As for my son, I’ll be the first in line when it's time for him to learn to shop…I mean, manage his finances.

rowing up, we belonged to a family swim club a few miles down a country road from our suburban Michigan home. To get there, I’d have to wait for my dad to get home from work (he swam slow and methodical laps during adult swim) or do more than my required list of chores to earn my mom’s attention for a mid-day swim. Or, I could ride my baby blue Schwinn the mile and a half down the dirt road, wrapping a beach towel around my face like a shemagh for protection against the dry dust kicked up by passing cars. I dreamed of having our own back yard pool. I probably even suggested the addition. I most likely begged. Mark Spiezio of Atlas Pools can help. All you have to say is "I want an inground pool" and let Atlas Pools handle the rest. Mark says pool construction goes like this: “First, we'll come to your property for an on-site assessment. This includes looking at the property plat for setbacks, utility easements and flood plains that would hinder construction of your inground pool.” Next, the team will show you our personally customized design recommendations within your price range. Once you choose the plan that suits you best, Atlas Pools will obtain all the necessary

building permits (unless there is a variance issue) and get to work. Installing a pool begins with groundwork: trees and debris must be removed. Sometime a retaining wall is needed. “We can do all of this for you,” notes Mark. “There is no need to contract elsewhere.” All pools are required by county laws to be in a fenced area, however. You may have to get with your subdivision or community regulators to see what size and height is allowable for your fence, if you don’t already have one. Then comes the magic: grading the land and installing the inground pool system of your dreams. “The final results are exciting and dramatic. You'll love your new pool!” promises Mark, who has worked hard for 35 years for continuous customer satisfaction. One example of a satisfied customer is John Howell, whose Alpharetta home now boasts a beautiful pool by Atlas. He says, "Atlas provided support before, during and especially AFTER the construction of our new pool. It was a pleasure to know customer service was their number one priority.” Close your eyes, grab a towel and enjoy dipping into the pools on these pages. Happy summer!

ithin 20 minutes of the Perimeter, the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area is a recreational paradise with hiking, biking and running trails for any outdoor lover. With more than 50 miles of trails, how do you decide where to go? Print a trail map from the National Park Service website (NPS.org) and hit the trail. Share your happy trails on our Facebook page!

FOR MOUNTAIN BIKING: SOPE CREEK TRAIL

The Sope Creek Trails are the closest mountain biking trails to the city and once you climb up into the woods, you’ve escaped into a dense tree canopy that hides fun and flowing singletrack. These trails cater to beginner and intermediate mountain bikers and make a figure-eight loop totaling about seven miles. The trails feature a few switchbacks and rollers that are easy to navigate, but require a solid level of fitness as the trails traverse the sloping valley forest to the Chattahoochee River. Sope Creek features an upper and lower loop; for heart-pumping climbs, start at the Paper Mill trailhead and ride counter-clockwise on the upper loop. You’ll catch views of the ravine and Sope Creek’s rapids along the ridgeline. For rolling hills, tackle the lower loop, where Sope Creek Trails connect to Cochran Shoals and its flat three mile gravel loop that parallels the Chattahoochee River. As a part of the Chattahoochee National Recreation Area, there is a $3 parking fee. 3760 Paper Mill Road SE, Marietta FOR HIKING: GOLD BRANCH TRAIL

The highlight of hiking on Gold Branch Trail is that the trail meanders along Bull Sluice Lake, a reservoir of the Chattahoochee River. The trail begins with a gradual descent into the river’s valley before the path rises and falls in a roller coaster fashion alongside the lake. Sun glistens off its surface, and in warm months you’ll see an abundance of wildlife such as turtles sunbathing on logs to herons standing amongst the cattails. Bring your dog on this hike; the lake’s coves are shallow enough for them to frolic in the water. Gold Branch Trail is a little more than

20

PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | July 2016

a 3.5 mile loop, and its trail markings make it easy to navigate. Be sure to make a detour off the main trail to visit the abandoned car, which is just after trail marker GB 11. Rotted out and rusted with bullet holes in the frame, the haunting sight suggests a troubling event happened here. Gold Branch’s name should be derived from the golden color that seems to radiate from the trees, for it is a solace teeming with natural beauty. As a part of the Chattahoochee National Recreation Area, there is a $3 parking fee. 5690 Lower Roswell Road, Marietta FOR TRAIL RUNNING: COCHRAN SHOALS TRAIL

The Cochran Shoals trailhead is one of the prime spots for trail running near the Metro Atlanta area. The gravel threemile loop runs parallel to the Chattahoochee River and then loops away from the river to a stretch alongside forests and meadows. This is great for beginners who want to try out an alternate surface to road running. Once you’ve built up miles, run into the wooded sections where you can explore a confluence of well-marked trails weaving through the forests. These trails are more technical, with roots and rocks, so keep an eye on your feet. A fun section of the woods is the portion along Gunby Creek, where the trail dips and requires you to cross the pebbled creekbeds no wider than 5 feet. Trail runners are allowed on the mountain bike loop, where the trails roll up and down in sweeping curves, but its recommended to run the opposite direction of bike traffic. In July, these trails are wellshaded, and cool drafts of air drift in from the river. As a part of the Chattahoochee National Recreation Area, there is a $3 parking fee. 5450 Interstate N Pkwy, Sandy Springs

or many people, making the bed is a chore. And if we’re being honest, it’s at the bottom of the chore food chain, reserved for the last 5 minutes before flying out the door. For others, making the bed is a reoccurring line item on a New Year’s resolution checklist that quickly catches dust. And, on a sunny summer morning full of promise and pool-time, who cares? However, it seems those walking among us who not only take the time out of their schedules to complete this task, but also enjoy it, benefit from lofty personality accolades including being happier, having a greater sense of self, and even being generally more 22

successful than their unmade bed counterparts. With all of this at stake, can we afford to neglect our beds? I think not! The perfect bed starts with the perfect mattress. Neglecting your mattress is like offering your mother-in-law a mint julep (WIN)… in anything BUT a metal vessel (FAIL). You’ll suffer long for not getting this critical sleep ingredient right the first time. I recommend heading to The Dump or to Natural Mattress in Buckhead. Do yourself the favor of making an investment in a high quality mattress. I salute you and your fantastic choices, BuckHaven reader! Let’s build upon our mattress, shall we? We asked

LINENS:

Invest in the best linens you can comfortably afford – and don’t go at it alone. You need to talk to an expert. I’m not suggesting you bring Andrea your bank statement, but if you give her a budget she can work with you. You will be amazed at the linen art directing that can be achieved with a limited budget. DUVETS:

Have some duvet decorating fun by styling these versatile pieces in different ways to achieve very different looks. Andrea suggests making your bed with the duvet cover pulled styled in one of three ways: all the way to the headboard, folded halfway to expose beautiful sheets with interesting designs, or folding it in thirds at the foot of your bed so it can be pulled up easily at night. Remember, down catches air. So fluff the daylights out of that duvet! PILLOWS:

We all have the license to get a little wild and crazy with decorative pillows. This is one of the best opportunities to introduce pattern, the latest trends and custom, one-of-a-kind elements in the bed-making process. QUILTS:

Andrea Owens, a Gramercy linen expert, and a key member of the team at Gramercy Fine Linens, for her top tips on how the make the perfect warm weather bed without stealing too much time from our summer morning routine. We all know cutting into our coffee time is a sin. It’s simply not done. FUNCTION AND FASHION:

Andrea believes the best bed beds are born from the layering of beautiful, and comfortable, textural elements. Some designed for function, some designed for fashion, but all designed to be the statement piece in the room.

Quilts, both light and heavy, add opulence to the bedding design. In warm climates like Georgia, these can take the place of heavier duvets. However, in the South, goodness knows we tend to err on the side of layers and frill, so many times you will see a quilt stacked on a duvet or draped across the edge of the bed – even when it’s 80 degrees. Bless our collective hearts. REDUCE WRINKLES:

Forget spot ironing - grab the spray bottle! A simple misting and the rogue wrinkles will disappear as the garment dries. Fragranced waters are also great as they add a nice aroma to the bed between washing. If the good Lord didn’t give you the tidy gene, these tips should help you bend nature to your will…at least when it comes to your summer bedroom. July 2016 | PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com
