eptember offers the sweet release of slightly cooler temperatures and here in the South our thoughts quickly turn to football. Whether tailgating before the game, cheering our teams on through all kinds of weather (and hopefully into championships) or discussing each play well after the final play, we love football season! If you are a Bulldogs fan, you sing along to “Glory, Glory” and chant “Gooooooo Dawgs.” If this is you or someone you know, then you will definitely want to get your hands on a new keepsake playbook that will help you relive the most unforgettable, extraordinary and gut-wrenching moments in the University of Georgia’s football history. College football historian and Bulldogs expert Patrick Garbin has compiled the most memorable moments in Georgia Bulldogs football in The Georgia Bulldogs Playbook: Inside the Huddle for the Greatest Plays in Bulldogs History (Triumph Books, 10
PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | September 2015
September 1, 2015.) Unlike other chronicles of the team, this book focuses on the greatest plays along with detailed player formations for each play. The Georgia Bulldogs Playbook: Inside the Huddle for the Greatest Plays in Bulldogs History provides a detailed breakdown of the most memorable moments in Georgia football with context, back story, relevant circumstances and comments from those directly involved. Highlights of the book include: • A look at November 13, 1982, when Georgia won their third consecutive SEC title after Jeff Sanchez and Ronnie Harris broke up Auburn’s fourth-down pass attempt in the end zone • Player profiles of the Kelly brothers, Bill Herron, Lindsay Scott and many more • January 1, 1981: Misplayed kickoff in Sugar Bowl win over Notre Dame Never-before-seen photographs reanimate memories, including the “onside
kick” against Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl in 1981, David Pollack’s strip of the football against South Carolina in 2002, Belue-to-Scott for 93 yards to defeat rival Florida, Fran Tarkenton’s fourth down touchdown pass in 1959, and “excessive celebration” in 2007. This 272 page, one-of-a-kind playbook is the best compilation of the team’s most groundbreaking plays throughout the years and is a great resource for fans who want to reflect on the Bulldogs’ unique history. A true “must have” for any Dawgs fan! Author Patrick Garbin is regarded as an authority and historian of college football and is a freelance sports writer. His articles have been featured in numerous local newspapers and magazines. He serves as the UGA football Beat Writer for DawgTime.com, is the author of nine books, including About Them Dawgs! and “Then Vince Said to Herschel . . .” Garbin is a UGA graduate and lives in Snellville, Georgia.

Gregory’s
Yellow Jackets
Poised for Strong Season
ARTICLE SUE G. COLLINS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
M
eet Brian Gregory of Buckhead, head coach of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket basketball team, entering his 14th season. Gregory's first season saw Tech score victories over a pair of NCAA Tournament teams in VCU and NC State, both away from home, and defeat Georgia in Athens for the program's first victory there in 35 years. The Yellow Jackets demonstrated significant improvement in year two with a winning record (16-15), three road victories in the Atlantic Coast Conference, and two wins over teams ranked among the top 30 in the RPI - Saint Mary's and ACC Champion Miami. Tech also scored a victory over rival Georgia for the second straight year, something that hasn't been done since the early 1990s, and the win at Miami was Tech's first win on the road over a top-10 team since 2004. SGC What does the upcoming season look like for Tech? BG Everyone in our program is very excited about the upcoming season. Our first recruiting class players are now seniors and will provide the experience and leadership needed to take the next step in our rebuilding process. We also have some new players that will make an immediate, positive impact. SGC How much of your half time pep talks are on the fly and how do you write them? BG How you address your team at halftime is usually determined by situation and score. You want to be clear and concise on what your 12
PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | September 2015
team is doing well, where they need to improve and explain any game plan adjustments. I always evaluate if we are playing with great energy, effort and discipline. As a coach, you really only have five minutes to both instruct and inspire, deciding on your key points is very important. SGC What advice do you have for parents who want their kids to play sports? BG I truly believe that sports can act as a tremendous learning experience in the overall educational process of our sons and daughters. If our main mission in youth sports is to build great young men and women, I don’t believe you will compromise the objective of athletic excellence in the process. I always give these two pieces of advice to parents regarding their children and sports. I know this is getting more difficult to do, but the more sports your kids play, the better athlete they will become. If they play multiple sports growing up, they will have a greater growth potential once they pick a specific sport to concentrate on. Second, as much as we love our children and want to be there for them in tough times, letting them learn how to fight through adversity and grow from disappointment is a valuable lesson all athletics can teach. Resiliency is a key character concept in helping young athletes reach their full potential. SGC Back to the Yellow Jackets – Do you have an allegiance from past grads and players who have succeeded, like Chris Bosh and Kenny Anderson?
BG When we came to Georgia Tech four years ago, one of our
main objectives was to reconnect with our former players. They all have special memories of their times here on “The Flats.” Getting them involved and supportive again has had a tremendous impact on our program. We have had Chris Bosh back for a home game and Kenny Anderson is 2-0 watching us play at Miami. It’s such a positive to know that at many practices and all the games, our former players will be in attendance giving back to their program. SGC How do you help players balance their rigorous academic demands with aggressive training and season schedules? BG To be successful at this level, at an institution like Georgia Tech, you must be a true Student-Athlete. Efficiency and time management skills are so important in balancing the level of excellence we want our guys to achieve in the classroom and on the court. I want our players to understand and embrace the fact that the athletic gifts they have been blessed with have created an opportunity to earn a degree that will positively impact the rest of their lives. SGC Tell us about your family and what do you like most about living in Buckhead? BG My wife, Yvette, and my two daughters, Isabella and Elyse, are a true blessing. Being a coach’s wife is not easy. There is no doubt that Yvette’s strength and faith act as the rock of our family. I am just amazed on a daily basis at the growth of my daughters. They are both very special in their own unique way. The move to Buckhead has been fantastic. Obviously there is so much to do with great restaurants, shopping and entertainment. However, like so many other things in life, it has been about the relationships we have developed with new friends and neighbors that have made our new home a great home.

f you’ve ever moved to a new city or set out to experience new things or learn a new skill, you probably understand how difficult it can be to meet people who share your interests. Luckily, Meetup provides dozens, if not hundreds, of opportunities to meet new friends, lovers, and team mates, nearby. Meetup is an in-person social network of like-minded people. Say you enjoy motorcycles, but don’t have any friends who ride. Visit Meetup, and you’ll find a group who takes rides every Saturday leaving from Brookhaven. Like to knit? You’re guaranteed to find a knitting group near Peachtree Hills. From arts and crafts to music, sports to animal lovers, there is a Meetup for everyone. One of the most popular Meetups are the outdoor and sports Meetups. One of the most popular Buckhead Meetups is Running for Brews, a Meetup that combines jogging and craft beer. Participants meet at The Elbow Room, a pub/pizzeria on Pharr Road, each Monday at 7 p.m. After a 5k run through the gorgeous streets and neighborhoods of Buckhead, they end the evening with craft beer, good conversation, and some delicious pizza. This particular

Meetup has grown organically to include numerous other Atlanta locations as well as a Facebook, Twitter (@Runningforbrews), and Instagram (@RFBBuckhead) page. “They make me look forward to Mondays,” says member Chris Lammi. “Runners of all abilities attend and I’ve found great inspiration watching many reach their running goals.” Whether you run or play kickball, volleyball, pickleball, or underwater hockey, there is an outdoor Meetup for you. If you enjoy hiking, jogging, geocaching, or swimming, you’ll find some like-minded folks. There are groups for men, women, African-Americans, seniors, children and with Buckhead and Brookhaven’s wide population variety and Atlanta’s pleasant weather, you should have no problem finding a Meetup that suits you and your interests. And if, by some reason, you can’t find an existing group, start your own in five minutes and for a small fee. And, whether you’re a retired pro soccer player or a soccer mom, most groups welcome all skill levels. There are so many resources in Buckhead and Brookhaven, from the parks, walking trails, and recreation areas, and residents

want to take advantage of that. Meetup, in general, is successful because it lets people use the internet to meet new friends and then get off the internet and live their lives. And with the team-focused sports Meetups available, nervous first-timers needn’t feel intimidated, because it’s a group dynamic. Another popular group is Buckhead Tennis, a multi-level group that combines a love for tennis with a love for staying in shape. Weekly matches are held, as well as a bi-monthly competitive event, open to any member who wants to track their progress and feel that healthy competitive spirit. This group has a yearly membership charge, and also requires participants to bring their own tennis balls; there are also numerous activities and outings, non-tennis related, planned after each weekly Meetup. The benefits and positive aspects of Meetup’s go well beyond the expected. Not only has the organization fueled economic growth for both individuals and communities, but also inspired members and organizers to start their own businesses, non-profits, and other organizations that improve the BuckHaven economic landscape.
“I’ve met many of my long-term friends from different Meetups that I’ve attended,” says Justin Sanderfer, who has both attended and hosted Meetups. “I can’t say I would have the same circle of friends if I’d never become involved.” Meetup was founded in the days just after September 11, 2001. CEO Scott Heiferman realized that he and his neighbors were talking, socializing, and generally meeting up with one another more than they ever had before; what if he could make something positive and lasting result from that tragedy? In summer of 2002, Heiferman, along with a small team, launched Meetup. There are currently more than 200,000 Meetups, 22 million members in 181 countries worldwide.
Visit Meetup.com and after a short list of questions and a confirmation email you are free to search for whatever Meetup you want, either by type or location. Download the Meetup app to stay connected on the go.

hile hundreds of thousands enjoy visiting the College Football Hall of Fame, its President and CEO John W. Stephenson Jr. goes to his own sports venue when he wants to relax and get his sports fix. “I go to Dick’s Sporting Goods,” he says. “There’s always something fun to get there.” Fun is important to Stephenson. He describes the Hall of Fame as a special place. “ It's such an over-the-top, unique experience," he says. "It’s unlike anything you have seen before. It’s not your traditional busts, artifacts and plaques hall of fame. It’s a celebration of college football and it’s designed to be engaging and fun.” Located downtown near the Omni MARTA station, the Hall of Fame opened a year ago to rave reviews and Stephenson understands the reason. “It’s a celebration of college football and it’s designed to be engaging and fun. Even if you are not a college football fan, I guarantee you will be entertained for a good two hours while you’re in the building because of all the cool things you can see and do and kids love it, too.

You will just have to trust me and go check it out yourself.” Stephenson, who earned both his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Georgia, grew up in the Sandy Springs area and calls himself a big UGA fan but not a fanatic. “I don’t really follow off-season stuff like recruiting,” he says. “But I love to watch or attend games on fall Saturdays. One of the cool things about this job is getting to meet and getting to know many in the college football world outside of UGA — even Georgia Tech!” Speaking of Georgia Tech, Stephenson says he loves a “house divided,” such as a Georgia Tech/UGA or University of South Carolina/ Clemson union. “Honestly, I think the “house divided” couples enjoy a common appreciation for college football generally and get to share that with each other as part of their lives … except maybe that one Saturday a year!” Stephenson now lives between Brookhaven and Chastain. “It’s easy to get anywhere and we love the public parks with playgrounds, which
are great for your kids.” Stephenson says that his family, which consists of wife, Megan, and children May and Jack, is often at PDK airport where the kids can play on the playground and watch planes take off and land. "Then we head over to get a good burger at Downwind.” Stephenson and his family are active in their church and the children’s school and they always support various local nonprofits that have an impact on the city and state. “I play golf when I can and we enjoy the Northside Youth Organization at Chastain Park. I grew up paying baseball, football and basketball out there so now that our kids are starting to get involved with NYO, it’s fun to watch.” Even though his schedule is jam packed, he has his favorite places around town including going to Houston’s for a nice meal with his wife, to Taqueria del Sol or Taxco for family night out and Sugar Shack for a quiet cup of coffee. Stephenson certainly didn’t have his eyes set on leading the Hall of Fame. He was a partner at Troutman Sanders with a number of clients in the hospitality, sports and entertainment industry. He was retained by project organizers in 2009 to asset with efforts to move the Hall to Atlanta. “I loved my co-workers and clients, but when I got the call, it was a great opportunity for a new challenge and to grow professionally. In addition to that, what a great honor to be a part of bringing a fantastic new asset to our city and state.” He truly is excited about the College Football Hall of Fame. “” he says. “It’s a nonprofit establishment built to be an asset for our city and state.” He believes the hall is another point of distinction that separates Atlanta from other cities. “Sometimes we Atlantans are behind the curve at experiencing and appreciating all that our city has to offer,” he says. “My kids like to run around the 45-yard-long indoor football field as well as two of our inter-actives: virtual face painting and the 52-foot-long touchscreen media wall. “I’d like for folks to make the trip downtown, experience the Hall and then be advocates for it. I really would like to see our metro Atlanta residents get excited about what we’ve built downtown and to be proud of it.”

Coaching From The Heart Wild for the 2015 DHS Wildcats Coach Nash and his family
ARTICLE VALERIE SHEPHERD | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
O
verheard at the Mill Glen pool in Dunwoody last month: “They’re on their way up.” As I squint through my sunscreen smeared sunglasses to see what the excitement is, I see a group of dads, air passing footballs. Each is loudly weighing in on how the Dunwoody Wildcat’s football team finally has the key components in place to not only have another building season, but a winning season. Seems everyone is predicting DHS’s scoreboard will be filled with “W’s”. What is it about the Friday night ritual of DHS football that causes little boys to have stars in their eyes and shoulder pads strung tightly starting at 5 years old with parents, neighbors, and the entire community decked out in DHS Blue and White? According to the head of DHS’s boosters, The Gridiron Club head, Mark Pastrone, “If you are going to ask for support from the community, the players need to support the community also, and these kids have done that.” And I’m here to report as a Dunwoody resident myself, these kids have indeed. They gave my son more candy and high fives during the soggy July fourth parade than he scored all of Halloween, and this 2015 team has shown up to support more community events then even the most involved gold star citizen. Who is leading these kids into a positive season while also teaching them about community? That would be the incredibly warm and dedicated Coach Mike Nash, DHS’s football coach.
24
PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | September 2015
Coach Nash talks as if he still is that 5 year old aforementioned boy with bright eyes, not only for the sport itself, but for this community and upcoming season and the boys on this team and the kids parents and his family, and… (you get the drift, this is a really positive likable guy.). I asked him how he landed at Dunwoody High School and in football in general, and he replies humbly “Thanks to the kindness of past coaches and past teammates who didn’t have to help me, but did. They knew I loved the game and saw that coaching was just in me.” Playing high school football himself, Coach Nash received a scholarship and spot at Marshall College. But he proudly states, that after one season it was clear to him, playing was making him miserable. Seems while coaching definitely is his thing, playing was not. So he packed up to head home to help with the family printing business and re-group. That re-grouping led to his old football coach creating an opportunity for him, which led to another one along side the guys who had coached him in high school. Nash earned his degree and taught special education and met his wife, Tracy, while working at Shiloh High School. They had two daughters, Jordan (now 16) Gracie (12), and he started his own successful construction business which he sold for $1 just so he could move home quickly and take care of his ailing father-in-law. This curving, non-traditional career path was carved as he always put family,
friends, and community first, setting an example of generosity for his young players. So what is the secret to the DHS Football team this year? Coach Nash and his assistant coaches feel it’s the players: “They want to be great, and it’s up to us to show them how.” This young team is deep and overflowing with “coachable” talented kids. Coach Nash and everyone in this DHS family has a goal to make the playoffs, and they are working very hard to do just that. Yes, clearly accountability is his thing. When further prodded on why this year’s team is so special, and this season in particular, he replies with a huge smile on his face, “It’s because we have fun every day.” Several of the coaches are younger, and as true mentors to players, know the key to getting the team to trust their changes is by being trustworthy themselves. Game record aside, Coach Nash, and his staff have scored a season’s worth of “W’s” by sharing their skills and positive attitudes and setting an example of generosity and community spirit. Why I Taught My Mom To Play Baseball “Love is the most important thing in the world, but baseball is pretty good, too.”- Yogi Berra WORDS WITT GREBE
M
y name is Witt Grebe and I love baseball. I started playing baseball when I was 4 years old. Back then, my mom used to stand on the sidelines and cheer. I was so happy when my mom cheered that I wanted to play longer because I had joy in my body and I felt like I was awesome. It’s good to love something. When I was 5, I played longer. I practiced and learned how to throw the proper way. My mom LOVED watching me play and I loved that, too. When I was 6 (turning 7), I won the season championship. My team was the A’s. My mom encouraged me to be tough on the field and also to be strong. She knew I could handle the championship. Baseball felt right to me. I turned 8 and continued playing ball. This year was tougher. Kids were getting older and better. My team had a rough year. We only won 2-3 games. Our whole team played good but we still weren’t the best team out there. That didn’t matter to my mom and me, though. What mattered to me was if I played my best and we had fun. My mom still loved watching me play, like moms do, and I still loved the game of baseball. The season was over, but I couldn’t forget baseball. Every day that summer, I practiced, no matter the temperature outside. I said to myself, if I’m going to practice baseball at home and 34

continue to play good, I need a person to play with me that never gives up. I picked my mom because she always encourages me and keeps things fun. I was excited to teach my mom baseball because I am the youngest in my family and this gave me a chance to be in charge for once! My mom had never played baseball before. Her dad wasn’t around a lot when she was young. He was a fighter pilot at war and she grew up on a military base with books and her sisters. She was very fast but she never got a chance to show it to anyone. I really wanted her to know what it feels like to play baseball. This is why I decided to teach my mom my favorite game. First, I taught her how to throw, because I needed a pitcher to pitch to me. She’s still working on it. I used my birthday money to buy a batting tee and rebounder. I shared the rebounder with my mom so she could learn how to field balls. She has gotten better and better. Practicing really works! Our next lesson is to learn how to hit. By the time I’m done coaching her, she is going to be great. My, oh my, me and my mom love baseball! (Witt Grebe is 8-years old. He and his mother live in Buckhead. Witt plays baseball with NYO at Chastain Park. He will be in second grade at Morris Brandon Elementary this year.)
