Investing in What Matters
As we step into April, a month of renewal and growth, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the power of investment—not just in the financial sense, but in all the ways we can enrich our lives, our community, and our future. True investment isn’t only about stocks and savings; it’s about where we choose to place our time, energy, and resources to create a life of meaning and lasting value.
One of the greatest investments we can make is in our community. The strength of a city is built on the dedication of its people—those who uplift local businesses, engage in community initiatives, and support the arts. Every ticket purchased for a local performance, every visit to an independent gallery, and every effort to preserve cultural traditions contributes to a more vibrant and connected society. The arts, in particular, breathe life into our surroundings, telling stories that inspire and unite us. By supporting artists and creators, we invest in the cultural richness that makes our city a place of passion and expression.
But beyond our community, we must also remember to invest in ourselves. Personal growth is a lifelong journey, and the choices we make today—whether in education, health, or personal well-being—shape the future we build for ourselves. Perhaps it’s time to take that class you’ve been considering, start a new fitness routine, or carve out space for creative pursuits that bring you joy. When we prioritize self-improvement, we gain confidence, resilience, and a renewed sense of purpose.
Of course, a well-rounded investment strategy also includes securing our financial and legal future. Thoughtful planning—whether through smart financial decisions, property investments, or legal safeguards—ensures stability and peace of mind for the road ahead. Taking the time to plan today allows us to build a future where we have the freedom and security to pursue our dreams while protecting the legacy we leave behind.
April is a reminder that what we invest in today will shape the world we live in tomorrow. Whether it’s through the connections we foster, the creativity we support, the knowledge we seek, or the financial security we build, every step we take toward meaningful investment makes a difference. Let’s make this a month of purposeful action— investing in what truly matters and creating a future we can all be proud of.

As the cost of living continues to inflate, local nonprofit Top Achievers Foundation equips the next generation with the skills to achieve financial independence. Located in Collin County, the six-session Youth Financial Literacy class aims to ensure middle and high school students understand what it takes to live their dream lifestyle.
"Financial literacy is the foundation of a stable future," says Lawrence Mann, Top Achievers CEO. "We want young people to understand the importance of making informed financial decisions early on."
The free workshop, offered in partnership with area financial institutions, covers budgeting, saving, and credit management through interactive lessons and lectures from industry experts.
Floyd Jahner, former CFO and COO of the Dallas Mavericks, has shared his expertise as a guest lecturer since the class began in 2020. "We want to get kids to start thinking about finances," says Jahner. "We want to get them started early, so they're not an adult thinking, 'Oh no, how am I going to make this work?'"
Top Achievers got its start in 1996 when Mann's five-year-old son underwent heart surgery. Mann says he made a deal with God: "Save my son, and I will dedicate my life to empowering the next generation."
While financial literacy is one of the foundation’s offerings, the nonprofit aims to ensure students gain well-rounded skills to thrive in adulthood. Other core pillars of the nonprofit's mission include mentorship, sports training, STEAM education, and collegiate scholarships.
The two-hour Youth Financial Literacy class is offered on Saturdays twice a month.
For those looking to volunteer, find programming for their child, or make a financial donation, visit topachieversplano.org. You can also attend the organization’s annual fundraiser May 22 at First United Bank, 3930 Dallas Pkwy.
Programs Offered by Top Achievers
• Financial Literacy - Twice monthly workshops aimed at teaching those in grades 6-12 the skills needed to be financially stable as an adult.
• STEAM - Quarterly camps focusing on subjects such as CRISPR, crystallography, rocket combustion, and more.
• Basketball – Annual competitive league aimed at instilling motivation, grit, commitment, and a growth mindset in today’s youth. Separate leagues offered for middle school/high school and genders.

• E-sports – Year-round programming that uses e-sports as the catalyst to instill motivation, grit, commitment, and growth mindset to today’s youth.

More than Just a Tax Accountant
ARTICLE BY VALERIE MERRICK
PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADELINE
MERRICK: MERRICK MULTIMEDIA
With tax codes getting more complicated, it’s easy for everyone to feel overwhelmed. Thankfully, the team at Altland & Harris Financial Group combines the knowledge, experience, kindness, and guidance that individuals and small business owners need to navigate complicated tax laws. Henry Harris III, owner and CEO of Altland & Harris, took time to answer some questions about how individuals and business owners can shift their thinking to help their financial future.
HOW THE ALTLAND & HARRIS FINANCIAL GROUP HELPS YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS
“WE'RE FOCUSED ON BEING MORE OF A CONSULTATIVE FINANCIAL PARTNER THAN JUST A TRANSACTIONAL PLACE THAT CAN PREPARE YOUR TAX RETURN FOR YOU.”
HOW DO YOU HELP BUSINESS OWNERS WITH THEIR TAX EFFICIENCY?
First of all, we look at what's on your mind. What's going on with you this year, and what are you thinking about for next year? We work to find out what the business owners’ overall goals are—before they just tell me they want to pay as little as possible on taxes for the year. Perhaps they are planning on building their business. Are they going to need funding? If so, then minimizing their taxable income may not be what they want to do right now.
At the end of the day, we're focused on being more of a consultative financial partner than just a transactional place that can prepare your tax return for you. I don't want to find out after you've done something, so most of our clients have been "groomed" to come to us before they make major decisions. For example, if they want to pass the business on to the next generation, we like to know beforehand.
One of the goals that we have at our firm is to get to know your particular business. We take field trips to client sites to see the client in their element. It helps us know what we're accounting for, ask more intelligent questions, and have insight into their actual business. CONTINUED >

WHAT IS COMMITTED BENEVOLENT INTEREST (CBI) AND WHY DOES IT MATTER?
CBI is a philosophy that speaks to preferring to help others by what we do. The very nature of what we do is to help other people and look out for them by assessing and aiding others in achieving their dreams and desires—whether it be investment planning or tax planning.
People have a lot of needs, and what we do isn't necessarily restricted to just tax returns. At first, I didn't realize how much people relied on us for different things at different times. For example, when a loved one gets ill and goes to a nursing home, we sometimes get calls to help. When someone passes, a surviving family member may need additional hand-holding. When these events happen, people need somebody that they can trust to help them navigate the process. And a lot of times, we offer to be that “somebody.”
HOW CAN THE SBDC HELP SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS DURING TAX TIME?
The SBDC provides an array of classes and resources designed to get new businesses off to a good start. We started with SBDC, the Small Business Development Center, a number of years ago in order to offer a small business tax workshop. Most people go into business because they have a passion for a particular thing, whether it be photography, cooking, or something else. The last thing on their mind is accounting and taxes. So, we offer the class to say, “Here are some major things that you need to be aware of.”
Small business owners may start out thinking, “You know what? I'm going to try and do this myself.” Go ahead and deal with it is what I say! You'll get smarter about some things, and at some point, you will get to a place where you say, “Okay, things are taking off, and I don't need to be spending my time doing this.” And when that time comes, we'll still be here.

Investing in a New Business
The Opportunity Is NOW!
ARTICLE BY RUDY FREDERICO | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY
OF RUDY FREDERICO
As of February 2025, consumer confidence in the United States reached a notable high, presenting a fertile environment for entrepreneurs to launch new ventures. This surge in optimism indicates that consumers are more willing to spend, thereby increasing the potential for business success. However, starting a new business inherently carries risks. One strategic approach to mitigate these risks is investing in a franchise, which offers several advantages over building a business from scratch.
LEVERAGING HIGH CONSUMER CONFIDENCE
Elevated consumer confidence suggests that individuals feel secure in their financial situations and are more inclined to make purchases. For entrepreneurs, this means a larger, more receptive market for new products or services. Capitalizing on this sentiment can lead to accelerated business growth and profitability. However, the challenge lies in capturing consumer attention and trust, which can be particularly daunting for unknown brands.

THE FRANCHISE ADVANTAGE
Franchising offers a pathway to business ownership that leverages the strength of an established brand and a proven business model. This approach provides several key benefits:
1. Established Brand Recognition: Investing in a franchise means aligning with a brand that consumers already know and trust. This immediate recognition can significantly reduce the time and resources required to build a customer base, as the brand's reputation has been previously established.
2. Proven Business Model: Franchises come with tested operational procedures and strategies that have been refined over time. This reduces the trial and error typically associated with startups, allowing franchisees to focus on execution and growth.
3. Comprehensive Support Systems: Franchisors often provide extensive training and ongoing support in areas such as marketing, operations, and employee training. This support can be invaluable, especially for individuals new to entrepreneurship, as it offers guidance and resources to navigate challenges effectively.
4. Lower Risk Profile: The combination of brand recognition, a proven business model, and franchisor support contributes to a lower failure rate for franchises compared to independent startups. This structure provides a safety net, making it a more secure investment for aspiring business owners.
MITIGATING RISKS THROUGH FRANCHISING
While franchising offers numerous advantages, it's essential for prospective franchisees to conduct thorough due diligence. Investigating the franchisor's track record, speaking with existing franchisees, and understanding the terms of the franchise agreement are critical steps to ensure alignment with personal goals and to assess the viability of the investment. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) emphasizes the importance of proper preparation to reduce the risk of potential issues down the line.
“Franchising offers a pathway to business ownership that leverages the strength of an established brand and a proven business model. This approach provides several key benefits. ”
Moreover, it's crucial to recognize that not all franchisors operate with the same level of integrity. Some may prioritize rapid expansion over the well-being of their franchisees, leading to potential conflicts and financial strain. Therefore, selecting a franchisor that demonstrates responsible growth practices and a commitment to franchisee success is paramount.
The only remaining question is "Where do I get help finding the right franchise for me?" This one is easy. Talk to people who own their own business, people who own a franchise, an accountant or CPA about how to structure it, and an experienced franchise consultant to help accelerate the process and coach you to a good decision. Remember, a dream without action is just a wish.

Investing In Our Future
LIVING SUSTAINABLY: A JOURNEY OF PROGRESS AND PERSISTENCE
ARTICLE BY MOLLIE HANCOCK | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF SARAH FUN
The road to living a more sustainable lifestyle starts with a first step. But sometimes, it feels like a two-step dance: one step forward and two steps back. The key is to keep dancing. Sustainability isn't about perfection; it's about progress, intention, and resilience.
When my family and I started Elephant Trunk Moving Supplies in 2015, the idea was simple: to provide a greener alternative to cardboard boxes for local moves. I believe in reducing waste and making choices that positively impact our environment. Every small action contributes to a larger
impact. Renting reusable plastic moving boxes instead of buying disposable cardboard ones reduces waste, saves trees, and offers a more convenient packing solution for local movers. From the products I offer to my personal habits, I strive to make mindful decisions that support a healthier planet for future generations. But starting this company taught me that sustainability is not always straightforward. It's a journey filled with learning curves and constant adjustments. Here are a few lessons I've learned along the way about living sustainably, both in business and at home:
Sustainability can feel overwhelming if you try to tackle it all at once. Instead, focus on small, manageable changes. At home, this might mean using reusable grocery bags, toilet paper made from bamboo, or fixing things when they break instead of buying something new. In our house, we also like to swap out single-use plastic for more durable alternatives, especially for things we use frequently. In business, it could mean reevaluating your supply chain or finding ways to minimize energy usage. Small, consistent efforts build momentum.
Start Small and Stay Consistent Embrace Imperfection
No one gets it right 100% of the time, and there will be setbacks. Maybe you forget your reusable cup at home or accidentally purchase something with more packaging than you'd like. Maybe you have been putting items in the recycling and recently learned your city doesn’t accept it. It can feel frustrating, but the important thing is to not let perfectionism stop you from trying. Every step forward matters, even if it's followed by a step back. Do your best, and you’ll continue to develop green habits. Even one action can make a difference. Keep going!
Educate Yourself and Others
Knowledge is power. Understanding the impact of your choices and educating those around you can create a ripple effect, especially if you’re able to set a positive (and nonjudgmental!) example. For instance, when customers rent moving boxes from Elephant Trunk Moving Supplies, they're often surprised to learn how many cardboard boxes we have kept out of the landfill. Since we started in 2015, we’ve been able to replace nearly 250,000 with our reusable options. Sharing facts like these can inspire others to make changes in their own lives.
Celebrate Progress
It's easy to focus on what's not perfect, but don't forget to celebrate the wins. Every time you make a more sustainable choice, you're contributing to a healthier planet. Small victories add up over time. Take pride in the steps you're taking, no matter how small they may seem. Living sustainably is a commitment to continual improvement, not just for ourselves but for future generations.
So, if you find yourself stumbling on your journey to sustainability, remember: it's okay. Take a deep breath, refocus, and take another step forward. When you're feeling stuck, just keep dancing. After all, the rhythm of progress is what makes the journey worthwhile.
Want more places to try out sustainable products? Check out these local businesses.

• HDNBC Resale Store: secondhand shopping is a great way to buy something “new” for you! 2129 W Parker Rd., #300, Plano, TX 75023
Support Local and Sustainable Businesses
Choosing to support businesses that prioritize sustainability can make a big difference. Whether it's a local farmer's market, a company that offers reusable products, or a brand committed to ethical practices, your dollars have the power to drive change. By aligning your spending with your values, you're investing in a more sustainable future.
At Elephant Trunk Moving Supplies, our mission is to make moving a little greener and a lot easier. But beyond the boxes, it's about fostering a mindset of responsibility and progress.

Plano Dispatcher Karin Gatewood Reflects on 25-Year Career Before Retirement
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY TIFFANY DITTO
LOOKING BACK ON YOUR CAREER, WHAT'S BEEN THE MOST REWARDING PART?
"Just knowing you truly are helping someone in their worst moment. Because they're not calling us on their best day; it's their worst days and moments."
IS THERE A CALL THAT STICKS OUT IN YOUR MIND?
"I have had some major calls, but one of them is on the list. Have you heard of Billy Chemirmir, the serial killer that was in Plano? They say he had more than 20 victims. Anyway, I took a call. I had no idea it was anything like that. It was a lady who was found unconscious in a senior community by two of her friends. I handled it just like we do any of our medical calls for an unconscious person until the paramedics arrived. While receiving treatment from paramedics, she came to and explained what happened. Sure enough, she was the only survivor of Billy Chemirmir. Her testimony helped police find him, arrest him, and put him behind bars. Even though I didn't play a real part in that other than to help an unconscious person, I'm super thrilled she survived and helped the police find someone like that."
FAMILY TIME is the Best Investment
These simple, yet intentional ideas can make the best memories.
EAT DINNER TOGETHER AS A FAMILY.
This meaningful time around the table is where connections happen. Let everyone share good moments from the day or something they struggled with. Create a jar of conversation starters, exchange giggles and cook up something delicious.
CREATE SURPRISES
Everyone likes to feel special – and surprised. The littlest things make the biggest impact: A backyard picnic; a sleepover in an indoor fort; an afterschool ice cream treat; a bathroom spa day.
CREATE FAMILY TRADITIONS
Build weekly or monthly traditions – movie nights with popcorn, board game marathons, a gratitude jar, evening bike rides, living room
dance parties, even a family book club to discover old favorites and new reads.
EXPRESS LOVE AND GRATITUDE
In busy seasons, it’s easy to forget to let a loved one feel appreciated and thought of. Tuck a hand-written note in a lunch box or give an unexpected hug; spend time sharing what you’re thankful for about them.
KEEP GENERATIONS LINKED
Consider Sunday meals with grandparents or weekly phone calls if distance separates. Invite them to share their childhood stories and treasured memories. Start a yearly family scrapbook filled with favorite photographs and vacation souvenirs.

Well, it's like a cheeky nod to the idea that sipping on this cocktail might be more fun than paying actual taxes! Described as “the greatest American play ever written,” the Pulitzer and Tony Award winning Our Town depicts the simple daily lives of the families in a small New England town in the early 1900s as their children fall in love, marry, and discover their own paths. This journey is as relevant today as when it first appeared on Broadway.
