Editor's Letter

Hello, Dunwoody and Sandy Springs!

I

don’t know about you, but my school field trips were lame. I mean, who really cares how long it takes to manually churn butter or how the pioneers made their winter coats? The days of boring old field trips are gone. As students head back to classrooms this month, they will undoubtedly be thinking about when they will be escaping those four walls on their first field trip.

Kids in schools around Perimeter are lucky to have teachers and parents who support learning outside the brick and mortar. We are pleased to report on some fabulous field trips in our feature story on page 20. With the number of excellent colleges and universities right here in Atlanta, why not consider furthering your education with a continuing ed class or two. Focus on photography, sharpen your pencils with a writing course or branch out and explore a new field. Get a kick in the pants with our story on page 18. Our talented writer, Rhiannon Bankes, keeps sharp, thanks to her two teen-aged daughters. She waxes poetic in her Parting Thoughts essay. Enjoy it!

The club was instrumental in founding Stage Door Players, the Dunwoody Library, the Dunwoody Nature Center, the July Fourth Parade and a host of other amenities and community events. The grand opening event marked Delta’s 85th anniversary of passenger service, dating back to its first passenger flight from Dallas to Jackson, Miss., on June 17, 1929. The museum contains displays and exhibits filled with hundreds of artifacts, many of which have never been on public display. They chronicle more than eight decades of Delta history and the growth and development of commercial aviation. The museum houses a permanent collection of five historic aircraft, including a Travel Air 6B Sedan similar to the one that operated Delta’s first passenger flight in 1929, and The Spirit of Delta, a Boeing 767 purchased for the company by employees in 1982. Also on display is a DC-3, Ship 41, that flew for Delta and was restored by Delta employees and volunteers. The Delta Flight Museum is located at 1060 Delta Boulevard, Building B, Department 914, Atlanta, GA 30354. DeltaMuseum.org

Save and Dine CARDelish, a new promotional tool for the restaurant industry, has begun marketing its loyalty dining card to consumers in the metro Atlanta area. The card allows savings of up 30 percent when dining out without coupons or coupon apps. Restaurant owners participating in the program are expected to see higher check averages, more repeat diners and higher overall revenues. More than 100 local restaurants have already enrolled in the program. Restaurants agree to offer a sliding scale of discounts to diners based on actual spending. “Our CARDelish is a unique approach to bringing together restaurants and people looking for new dining experiences,” says Pino Venetico, CFO of CARDelish. “Unlike coupon-based promotional programs we give diners a true incentive to spend more and return often.” Consumers pay a small annual membership fee to obtain a CARDelish card, providing access to an expanding list of participating restaurants in all price and cuisine categories. The member may dine at any of the CARDelish restaurants as often as they like, with the card itself taking the place of bothersome coupons. CarDelish.com

What the College Admissions Numbers Really Mean Apply Early and Test Early Article David Stoll

A

nother school year brings the perennial concern that it is harder than ever to gain admission to a selective college. Stanford, for example, admitted just 5.07% of its 42,167 applicants this year, the lowest in the University’s history. However, as in prior years, this trend should be viewed in a larger perspective—one that suggests that applying early remains an important part of the admission process. Moreover, students in the high school Class of 2017 should plan ahead when it comes to standardized testing. The Stanford story is instructive. Under its Early Action (EA) program, 748 students—nearly 11% of early applicants and more than one-third of all acceptances—were offered early admission. Thus, the acceptance rate for Regular Decision barely topped 3%. Similarly, Yale admitted 15.57% of its EA applicants, compared with 6.26% of all applicants; Princeton 18.53% EA, compared with 7.28% overall; and Harvard 21.14% EA, compared with 5.9% overall. Outside of the Ivy League, The University of Chicago admitted 12.12% of its EA applicants, compared with 8.4% of all applicants. The Early Decision (ED) story is even more interesting. Applying Early Decision involves a binding promise to attend the school if accepted. The University of Pennsylvania offered admission to 25.5% of its ED applicants, who fill more than half the class, as opposed to 9.9% overall. Duke, too, accepted over 25% of its ED applicants, nearly half the entering class, as opposed to 10.7% of all applicants. Northwestern accepted a whopping 32.31% of ED applicants, while its overall accept rate dropped to a low of 12.9%. What do these numbers mean? Applying Early Decision is wise for a competitive student who has a clear first choice and for whom financial aid is not an issue. For such a student, the odds of 14 PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | August 2014

acceptance are higher, because the student is showing an interest, the school will accept a higher percentage of applicants, and there will be fewer slots available for those applying regular decision. On the other hand, someone uncertain about attending a school should not apply Early Decision as a means of gaming the system; attending a best-fit school is well worth the wait. Applying Early Action is also wise, and financial aid need not be a consideration yet. While chances of admission are not quite as high at an Early Action school as at an equivalently selective Early Decision school, the odds for a competitive student are still better than they would be in the spring. Do note that some Early Action schools, including Harvard, Princeton, and Yale, will not permit early applicants to apply early to other private schools. Thus, it may be better to apply to other schools early to allow for more possible options. What does this mean with respect to the Redesigned SAT? The new test is expected to launch in spring 2016. For those who find the ACT to be a better fit, the SAT changes are not particularly relevant as every school will accept either ACT or SAT. The best way to find out whether a student is more suited to ACT or SAT is to take a full-length practice of each. For those in the Class of 2017 who may rely on SAT scores, it may make sense to take the current SAT in 2015 and the new SAT in 2016 and rely on the better performance. Thus, 2015-16 juniors should begin their (current) SAT prep early and take the test in fall 2015. They can then update their prep in the spring and try the new SAT. he learning never ends, right? So, why not take your brain to the next level at one of the excellent colleges or universities right here near home. Atlanta is home to some excellent schools that offer continuing education opportunities so you can dabble, experiment and start your journey toward a degree. According to Davia Lassiter, Kennesaw State University marketing manager, Kennesaw has one of the largest continuing education programs in the country with some of the best certified instructors in the area giving students hands-on and online training. Students at Kennesaw are taught from experience. Adults find this to be imperative when learning. “I have heard great things about Kennesaw’s Culinary arts program, “ says Aaron Lee, Maryland resident. “I want to go to an institution where you actually receive hands on experience.” Being able to attend class is often a monumental concern for adults. Kennesaw offers a great solution to adults who are unable to travel to class everyday with more than 300 online courses and some 50 certificate classes. Thinking Outside the Classroom Field Trips Take Students Farther

Article Sue G. Collins | Photography Provided

Lessons are outdoors at Springmont's Poplar Springs Landschool

K

ids love school field trips. Once permission slips have been signed and bag lunches packed, kids get to spend a day outside the four walls of boring old school and explore and learn something about their world (near or far). Take a trip now, through the eyes of the students who are lucky enough to attend one of our community’s fabulous schools. Day trips at Springmont, a progressive pre-kindergarten to eighth grade school in Sandy Springs include outings to the Tellus Museum, Cobb Energy Center, High Museum of Art and Auburn Avenue. At Lovett, students visit the High Museum, CNN Center, and the Chattahoochee Nature Center. Kids from the Atlanta Speech School love the trip to Turner Field/The Varsity. What’ll ya have? Davis Academy students have many opportunities for out of school experiences. Pre-school students are introduced to important places in our community (veterinarian, bakery, library, etc.) and first graders visit The Breman and Cohen Homes where they develop relationships with the elder residents. Older elementary-aged students explore local history at the Atlanta History Center, spend a day at the Wahsega 4-H Center learning about ecology and the life of early Georgia settlers or take a day trip to Birmingham, Alabama where they supplement their studies on civil rights with visits to historic sites in Birmingham such as the 16th Street Baptist Church. At many schools, day trips have evolved into overnight excursions, with teachers, staff and occasionally parents chaperoning and leading activities. For older kids at Springmont, outdoor lessons are planned at the school’s Poplar Springs Landschool in Summerville, Ga. On 20 PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | August 2014

overnight adventures, students participate in team-building and group development activities, while also learning about the natural history of plant and animal life in the region. The facility is situated in the foothills of the Appalachian Trail, where students are immersed in experiential learning opportunities. A naturalist provides lessons in edible plants and finding a water source and safe habitat while exploring nature. Students make their own rope from bark, learn to start a fire from flint in the fire pit and grind ochre for painting with Springmont’s art teacher. Teachers say these excursions offer students connections to the natural world and to themselves. These outings also offer time for critical analysis, decision making and opportunities for intellectual, creative, social and physical engagement beyond the classroom. The kids in the Upper School at Lovett head out annually to JOE

( Junior Outdoor Expedition), a five-day, four-night backpacking trip in North Carolina’s Pisgah National Forest. JOE seeks to create a shared experience for the junior class--one that challenges each student physically and intellectually, fosters leadership, and promotes environmental awareness. The JOE program was created in 1994 under the guidance of former Lovett Headmaster Jim Hendrix. The JOE trip generally departs on a Sunday for North Carolina. Upon arrival at Pisgah, the junior class is organized into groups of 10-12 students, with two adults assigned to each group. The first task of each group is to distribute their gear and food among themselves. For the next five days the groups hike through the Pisgah Forest, sharing responsibilities of leading, cooking, pumping water and cleaning. Other students at Lovett aren’t left out. The sixth graders explore Chattanooga, the seventh graders go to Washington, D.C., and eighth graders jet off to New York City in April. Sixth grade students at Atlanta Speech School look forward to a trip to Savannah each spring. The trip is the culmination of their study of American history and brings alive the early period of American history. What they will see on the field trip is woven into the curriculum throughout the year and the vocabulary they learn. They go to Tybee Island, explore forts and learn about the Davis students in Israel

once-in-a-lifetime adventures such as ostrich riding, bungee jumping and wildlife safaris. An equally adventurous group of 16 Pace Academy Middle School students traveled on Pace’s inaugural trip to Iceland in June with three Middle School teachers, ready to expand their understanding of environmental science in one of the most active volcanic regions on earth. The group made the most of its 10 days in Iceland, creating a stop-action film about the evolution of the Blue Whale and snorkeling between the North American and Eurasian continental plates. Each of these study tours is a part of Pace Academy’s global education program, which utilizes an interdisciplinary approach to connect academic concepts to first-hand intercultural experiences. Other global education destinations this year include Cambodia, where students built homes with Habitat for Humanity, Tanzania, where a courageous group climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro over spring break and Budapest, where the Pace Academy Model Government team received the Outstanding Delegation Award. These curriculum-based trips facilitate unique cross-cultural experiences for students while fulfilling Pace’s mission to create prepared, confident citizens of the world. “The trip to South Africa opened my eyes to an entirely different world. I leaned into discomfort on that trip and learned a lot about myself. I got to see people who have a lot less than I do but who work extremely hard, which has inspired me to work even harder in my daily life,” says senior Carolina Abdullah. At the end of May, the Class of 2014 at Holy Spirit Preparatory School traveled to Rome, Italy, for the annual senior class trip. Led by faculty, including Mike Verlander, the chair of theology at HSP, the trip is a kind of capstone on the stucontinued >

city plan. They each do a project in Microsoft Collage to commemorate their overnight field trip. This summer, 13 Pace Academy Upper School students participated in Pace’s fourth global education trip to South Africa, led by Pace faculty members Kevin and Jenni Coale and Trish Anderson, a South Africa native. In their two weeks abroad, the students immersed themselves in South African history with visits to the District Six Museum in Cape Town and Nelson Mandela’s prison cell on Robben Island. The students also enjoyed August 2014 | PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com 21

dents’ classical education and religious formation, where they extensively tour the sites they studied throughout their time at the preschool-12th grade school. This is the chief among several notable field trips throughout the school year, including a trip through Spain by the foreign languages department and an excursion to Greece with the chair of the classics department. In addition to academic tours, the students of Holy Spirit Prep often take summers to serve others in mission trips, including trips to the remotest parts of Kentucky to

help underserved families with home repair and construction needs, and a trip to Jamaica’s Mustard Seed Communities, where students deliver needed supplies and support to facilities serving people with disabilities and other needs. Beginning in fifth grade, Davis Academy students also take overnight class trip to Savannah, Charleston, S.C. and Washington, D.C. The grand finale of the Davis Academy journey is the two-week class trip to Israel. During their time away, students have a jam-packed itinerary that Pace students show their love for a chaperone includes visiting historic sites, exploring the natural beauty of the region and climbing Masada, and learn about their Jewish heritage. Students also have unique opportunities to meet Israeli peers in special communities and interact with local people. They learn about ancient and modern life in Israel, and they are encouraged to ask many questions and explore their own spirituality. Being away from their families this long can also be transformative, and typically the students become very close to each other during this time and very connected to their teachers. This remarkable trip is often said to be a transformative experience.

E

arlier this summer, our magazine had the tough assignment of participating in Southern Automotive Media Association’s fourth annual Topless in Miami convertible competition held at Bay Biscayne’s Ritz-Carlton Hotel on June 12. With 15 of the world’s finest automobile companies participating in one of five different categories, journalists and automobile specialists were able to see, drive and ultimately judge what their favorite cars were. We were randomly selected to evaluate automobiles in two categories— Performance/Roadster and Super Luxury/

24 PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | August 2014

Exotic Convertibles—and the remaining three were Luxury, FullSize and Small Convertible. Automakers included Audi, Bentley, Chevrolet, BMW, Ford, Mazda, Fiat, Infiniti, Jaguar, Jeep, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Porsche and Volkswagen. While every model we judged was a joy to drive, there could only be one chosen from each category through a numbers system. Once the ballots were tallied, all winners were announced during a gala later that Thursday evening. We congratulate all the winners and look forward to going topless in Miami again in the future.

Scarbrough Group A Family Serving Families Article Ben Hammett Walkuski Photography Provided

I

n the world of financial advisement, trust is everything. Trusting the people who manage and invest your money is the foundation for a long and successful business relationship, and The Scarbrough Group knows a thing or two about relationships. This family business began more than 30 years ago when newly minted University of Georgia graduate and Air Force veteran Mike Scarbrough borrowed $10 for gas money and $150 for a new suit for a job interview in Atlanta. Out of this humblest of beginnings has grown a legacy of Family Serving Families. Now patriarch Mike Scarbrough, a Certified Financial Planner™, oversees a team of three at The Scarbrough Group at Morgan Stanley, on Glenridge Drive, near the intersection of 285 and Route 400. Mike’s team includes daughter Jennifer Marsh, a Certified Financial Planner™, whose focus within the business is helping women take control of their financial lives; son Travis Scarbrough, a financial advisor with experience as an investment banking analyst; and Amy DeWit, a senior registered associate with more than 10 years of experience in the financial services industry. Together, The Scarbrough Group provides to its client families the comfort of knowing that their multi-generational wealth management plans are being run by a family business focused on the long-term. The firm’s broad financial product and service offerings make it very convenient for a family to entrust The Scarbrough Group with their wealth management needs.

26 PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | August 2014

“When most people think about the financial services industry or wealth management in particular,” says Travis, “they think about investments. While investments are an important component of what we do, our clients also benefit from the work we do in risk management, tax mitigation, estate planning and wealth transfer, liability review and issuances, as well as insurance.” The Group’s team members are proud and active members of their communities. Mike Scarbrough and wife of 29 years, Denise, are residents of Brookhaven and enjoy reaping the many benefits of in-town living: close proximity to work and play and being near to Buckhead Church, where they are active members, serving as mentors to young married and engaged couples. Denise and Mike enjoy dining out at Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse, Hovan Mediterranean Gourmet, Jo’s Grille, and Olive Bistro. Mike is also an active member of the North Atlanta Rotary. Jennifer Marsh and her husband, Rob, live in Ashford Park with their son, Jones, and Springer Spaniel, Zoe. One of their favorite activities is going out to dinner, and they can be spotted at area hotspots such as Canoe, La Grotta and The Optimist. Members of Peachtree Presbyterian Church and the Ashford Park Civic Association, Jennifer and Rob also enjoy attending local festivals and events throughout the year, and love that Brookhaven plays host to some of the best ones in the city. Amy DeWit, formerly of Hollencrest Capital Management in Newport Beach, Calif., joined The Scarbrough Group in 2009. Amy and her husband Rich have two young children, Grace and Jack. Amy is an accomplished photographer who enjoys taking pictures of her friends and family; she also enjoys running and working out. Travis and his wife Kaitlin, also members of Buckhead Church, have two daughters, Bailey and Addison. Self-described Buford Highway food fanatics, Kaitlin and Travis also enjoy entertaining family and friends in their home, particularly for fish fries and crawfish boils. When he’s not working or with his family, Travis enjoys golfing, hunting, fishing and cycling. “Our family and friends are deeply rooted in this city,” Travis says. “As a kid, I imagined a life outside of this city, exploring something different and new, but there is still so much to explore here and the city continues to change, it’s very exciting.” In a crowded field that is full of firms offering many of the same things to clients, what sets The Scarbrough Group apart, they say, is its client service ethic, aligned interests and spirit of cooperation. “Our business starts and ends with our clients,” Travis explains, “and our clients’ success determines our success. This is the way Dad has been able to build a successful business.” Secondly, there are no competing interests within the team at The Scarbrough Group. “We each are very close and understand the tremendous value in working with each other,” says Travis. “We measure success from a team standpoint and run the business in that fashion.” And finally, cooperation. “Having multiple people working on each specific client situation adds a level of diligence and creativity,” Travis explains. “When we sit down and talk about planning and investments, our job is to challenge each other to always come up with the best solution.”

Artist’s Palette

Kerry Butler Featured Artist at the Blue Heron Nature Preserve Article and Photography Ruksana Hussain

W

hen you visit Buckhead’s own Blue Heron Nature Preserve (BHNP) this month, you’ll find beautiful scenes painted by local artist Kerry Brown adorning the walls of the gallery. The featured artist this quarter, Brown is pleasantly surprised with the attention his work has attracted at the gallery. A mutual friend connected him with the staff at BHNP and next thing he knew – 14 paintings with animal themes were handpicked for a three-month exhibition at the BHNP Art Gallery. These are watercolor, gouache and acrylic paintings, and they are available for sale, both framed and unframed. “I have more than 300 paintings done over the last 4-5 years,” he shares. “Landscapes, animals…I did about 50 watercolors and now I am doing oil canvasses.” A selftaught painter, Brown entertains appointments at home to see his work but does not exhibit anywhere else at the moment. “I have no website, no business…I am only interested in painting!” His other interest, and sometimes his distraction, is gardening 28 PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | August 2014

and bonsais. A part-time staff member of the Richards Variety Store on Peachtree Battle, 64-year-old Kerry was happy with the crowd that turned up at the opening reception at BHNP. While he does not teach any classes, he is hoping to have his work exhibited at a few more venues. Brown’s work is colorful, moody and attempts to represent the splendor of nature. His use of light and shadow is impressive. Born in Brooklyn, Brown has been painting since he was a 6 year old. He worked in New York as a commercial artist in the 70s and 80s but moved to Atlanta just after the Olympics. Now retired and living in the Peachtree Hills neighborhood, he devotes his time to daily painting, observing nature and spending time with family, who all call Georgia home. Brown paints a wide range of subjects – everything from scenery, sunsets and cloud formations to horses, windmills and flowers. Other than courses in etching and lithography, he has no formal training in painting or arts. His pieces start from less

than $100 for a smaller painting to a few hundred dollars for larger ones. He does admit finding reasonably priced art in the city is daunting and he’d like to cater to that audience. Most of the paintings on display at BHNP are very well-priced and are a versatile size that you can prop up on a table or hang up on the wall. The work is displayed at the Blue Heron Nature Preserve’s Art Gallery located on a 25-acre natural wilderness just off busy Roswell Road. The gallery is a non-profit space dedicated to exhibiting work with an environmental thread. The small but exquisite exhibition is hosted in a beautiful architectural space. BHNP shows work on a quarterly basis to provide a lens for people to see the very close connection between art and nature. If you are interested in exhibiting your work or know someone who would be, contact the BHNP curator, Diane Evans at dceart1@aol.com or 404.626.1891. To schedule a private viewing, call the BHNP Office at 404.345.1008.

A Dozen First Days of School Words Rhiannon Bankes

A

ugust marks the end of long, lazy summer days and brings the hustle of a new schedule. Bare feet get new sneakers and the calendar becomes overloaded with obligations. Cookouts at dusk are replaced by practices, pick-ups, short-order cook dinners, and helping with algebra homework. Late nights now make way for early mornings with you barking orders and questions like a stock trader to “hurry up,” “grab your backpack,” and “where are your pants?” We give ourselves permission to slow down in the summer months. We tend to run on a different clock, but then come August we try to snap back to the controlled chaos of daily logistics. These busy days fly by and before you know it, the holidays are here, then spring break, and a whole year has flipped by on the calendar. It’s only when we step back and realize how little time we get with our children do those long, time-bending days of summer have their most appeal. You are only granted around a dozen first days of school with your child, so don’t lose your patience over the spilled cereal or think you’ll go crazy if you have to pack one more picky eater’s lunch box. Before long your child will be running out the door and shouting over their shoulder that they’re getting something to eat with friends at school. Your refrigerator that was once covered in turkey handprints and finger paint masterpieces will have order forms for senior pictures and notes for college application 34 PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | August 2014

deadlines. When you reach the last years of your child’s “back to school” days you will forget the endless waits at the pediatrician’s office for their yearly physicals, every dreadful PTA meeting, and Saturday morning practice in the rain. When you see your daughter in her prom dress you will actually miss picking up her dirty gym socks and when your son and his friend’s get their licenses you will reminisce about feeding them endless frozen pizzas and bags of chips while they played video games. As your autumn begins to pick up speed, apply some of that laid back summer attitude to your busy season. Schedule family time. Older kids may roll their eyes at the idea of movie or game night. They will definitely be annoyed when times are made to be device-free (this means you too,) but these moments of disconnecting from technology are when true family connections are made. Remember how no one missed their cell phone when you were all eating popsicles and doing cannonballs at the lake. Look for the small memories in the big picture. Take the sticky kisses when you can get them and remember every time they turn around to wave goodbye before running into school with their backpack bouncing. Before you know it they will be throwing their cap at graduation and packing up their room to leave for college. You’ll be wishing for just one more day of carpool and bandaging skinned knees. You’ll be wishing for one more August “first day of school.”
