Editor's Letter

Happy December, Friends! This is the season of giving. To me, the beauty of giving is actually receiving. That is, receiving the feeling of a full heart from acting unselfishly. Now, don’t get me wrong. It doesn’t happen as often as it should these days. Somehow, our family’s regularly scheduled Saturday morning shift at the Intown Collaborative Food Bank has been swallowed up by other demands. And, my busier than usual pre-holiday schedule makes me cranky, which means I am less apt to recognize when someone needs help. Or a hug. Or a friendly smile. Or a thoughtful surprise. It’s not that hard, now that I’m writing it. That’s it. I’m finishing this letter, then reaching out to at least five friends who may need some love, my church community service planner and the people at Genesis Shelter to plan a December of giving. (And, no wrapping required!). I hope you enjoy this issue. I think you’ll agree the portraits in our feature, The Gift of Giving, are gorgeous. Photographer Scott Areman moved to Atlanta last year from Seattle and really captured the personalities of the generous Buckhaven volunteers in our story. Welcome to our team, Scott. We had fun shooting at the charming Chastain Arts Center and Gallery, where students were busy making art. Check out their class schedule and visit their gift shop to pick up some truly one-of-a-kind gifts for the special people in your life. Best wishes from our publisher, Jim Newman, and our entire team at Lifestyle Publications, for a holiday season full of warmth, love and giving.

Seven Hens’ recipes are inspired from seven different countries from around the world. Schnitzel is an age-old cooking technique originating from Europe. It means pounding a boneless piece of meat, essentially tenderizing it, breading it, and then frying it until it becomes tender on the inside and crunchy on the outside. Seven Hens in Sandy Springs is located in the Abernathy Square Shopping Center at 6615 Roswell Road, Sandy Springs. 404.228.5381

Pirates of Lanier Local Businesses Join to Give Generously Article Valerie Reed | Photography Provided

F

or the sixth year in a row the Lanier Poker Run was held at Lake Lanier this summer, benefitting some of our favorite nonprofits in our community. Despite rainy weather, 301 boaters and landlubbers participated on and around the lake. Paul Teutul Sr. of Orange County Choppers was there to help support Lanier Partners of Georgia, welcoming participants and sponsors. The weekend fun continued with a treasure hunt, pirate costume contest, pirate-themed car award, DJ, dancing competition and fireworks display. An auction was sponsored by Four Season Auction Gallery, where every-

one had the opportunity to bid on hundreds of unique items in support of the event charity. The excitement of watching (and hearing) some of the greatest performance boats in America created an infectious excitement that continued throughout the weekend of generosity. The worthy beneficiaries of the annual event included Camp Sunshine, a summer camp for children with cancer; Boys and Girls Clubs of Hall County; Camp Twin Lakes; Sunshine on a Ranney Day, creating dream room makeovers for kids with long term disabilities or illnesses and The Edmondson-Telford Center for Children which provides hope to victims of sexual abuse. During a follow up party recently in Buckhead, “Celebrate Success” honored volunteers, sponsors and donors who made the Poker Run a success. The Poker Run would not have been possible without these sponsors and volunteers that worked tirelessly to make it a success. Locally owned company, Reliable Heating & Air supported the weekend event. Dan Jape, owner of Reliable Heating & Air is on the board of Lanier Partners of North Georgia and he called on his more than 300 employees to volunteer their time and resources to the event. Thanks to the efforts of everyone involved with this local event, supported by local businesses and residents, the Poker Run raised more than $400,000, doubling the number of benefitting nonprofits, establishing them as the “Top Charitable Fundraising Poker Run in America!” It’s great to live in a city where supporting local businesses means good service and convenience, especially when these companies give back to the communities they serve. May the spirit of giving continue through the year!

Brookhaven Congregation Or VeShalom Celebrates Community Article Patrice Worthy | Photography Courtesy of Or VeShalom

W

hat began 39 year ago as a get together for congregants of Or VeShalom has evolved into a full blown community celebration of Sephardic Jewish culture. The annual Hanukkah Bazaar at OVS is now a festival including vendors, a kids room, a kids art room, a bouncy house, games, prizes and more. Sheryl Rechtman, volunteer vendor coordinator, says the Hanukkah Bazaar draws about 1,000 people to the one-day event that takes place on December 7 from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. at OVS, located on 1681 North Druid Hills Rd. in Brookhaven. “We have the bazaar about a week or two before the holiday so people have time to shop,” Rechtman says. “We try to find a variety of products that are unique and different. We look for products anyone can enjoy.” The Hanukkah Bazaar includes more 14

PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | December 2014

than 35 vendors selling artwork, jewelry, clothing, cookware, pashmina scarves and other products. Beth Arogeti, vice president of OVS Sisterhood, says the Hanukkah Bazaar allows the synagogue to show off the Sephardic culture. “It’s a community wide event. It’s not like Greek Fest with music and dancing. Ours is more of a food festival,” Beth Arogeti says. “Food is a huge part of the Sephardic culture and any major event in Jewish culture. The members of the OVS Sisterhood prepare for the annual festival all year. Every Tuesday a group of women gather in the OVS kitchen to make pastries and bourekas, a small pastry filled with either meat, potatoes, spinach, or eggplant. The pastries are sold at the bazaar, but because of the popularity of the bourekas, the sisterhood sells them

throughout the year. Other items on the menu include Greek salad; spaghetti with homemade vegetarian marinara sauce; quajado, a casserole made with macaroni and spinach; pinyonates, a confection with toasted pecans and honey; biscochos, braided cookies with cinnamon, travados, sweet turnovers filled with ground almonds and pecans, sugar, cinnamon and honey; mustachudos, a round cookie made with honey and huts; baklava dipped in honey; marouchinos, macaroons made with almonds, sugar, vanilla & almond extract and egg whites. This year the sisterhood is also adding quinoa salad and other gluten free foods to accommodate alternative diets. Amy Arogeti, President of the OVS Sisterhood says they use the same recipes from 50 years ago and that is what makes the food special. “It takes time; you just can’t throw this stuff together.” Amy Arogeti says. “When I got married I was welcomed by the ladies. They offered me something they learned from their mothers, who learned from their mothers and it was a huge part of my husband’s life.” The founding members of OVS came to the United States from Turkey and The Isle of Rhodes in Greece. All were shoe cobblers by trade and came together in 1914 to provide Sephardic Jews, or Jews of Spanish and Portuguese descent who were exiled in Turkey, Brazil, Arabia, Greece and other parts of the Ottoman Empire, a place to worship in Atlanta. Now, the congregation boasts Jews from Brazil, France, Iran, Uzbekistan, Cuba and Mexico. Amy Arogeti says the tapestry of cultures and languages is what has sustained OVS for a century. “Ours is a cultural synagogue, the people are what has helped our synagogue stay alive,” Amy Arogeti says. “One of the things that’s special about our synagogue is that it’s a house of worship and a kehillah, or a community. We are trying to keep the same thing alive that had at Rhodes.” Entry cost to the Hanukkah Bazaar at Or VeShalom is $3 per person.

Giving

the Gift of Time

T

his is the season for giving - gifts for loved ones, thoughtful neighbors, caring school teachers. For these generous volunteers of Perimeter North, giving is second nature. The gifts they give are their long hours, creative collaborations and inspiration. They work tirelessly on raising funds and awareness for causes near and dear to their hearts. There are so many thoughtful leaders behind the scenes of our community’s deserving organizations, and we are honored to introduce you to a few in this December Giving issue. Article Helen Grebe Photography Scott Areman on location at The Chastain Arts Center and Gallery

Martha Randolph Historian, the Members Guild of the Atlanta History Center Years with the Organization: Martha is a charter member, serving since the beginning, 25 years total. Primary Role: As historian, Martha takes pictures at each event, assembling them into large scrapbooks creating a veritable history of memories for the Members Guild. Why I Volunteer: At the heart of all things, I’m a people person! I enjoy being involved and making a difference. A Memorable Moment Volunteering: I’m so excited about the upcoming complete renovation of our 33acre campus! The Cyclorama is about to move to our campus. The “Veteran’s Park” will be added on the corner along with a bistro opening on the front of the History Center with patio seating. This whole opening up of the campus to the public means the best is yet to come and I’m proud to be a part of it all! Additional Hobbies/Interests: Singing in the Chancel Choir at Peachtree Presbyterian Church since 1961 and singing at Carnegie Hall in this role. Holiday Wish this Season: Music has always been a part of our family and our holiday traditions. This year it will play an even bigger part in our holidays since my grandson Austin, who works with Big Machine, the producer of all of Taylor Swift’s albums, will get married December 6 to another music aficionado, Katherine Douglas (the daughter of song writer Tom Douglas who is in the Country Music Hall of Fame). This year my holiday wish will be the blessing of this special marriage and joy for years to come!

Sally Joyce Community Outreach Chair, The Auxillary Board of Directors for Northside Hospital Years with the Organization: Sally’s 18 years with the organization have allowed her to serve on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee along with serving as past president of the Auxillary Board. Primary Role: As community outreach chair, Sally finds herself taking on many roles that vary from an active puppeteer performing in classrooms to distributing care bags for new parents of babies in the NICU (part of their Network of Hope Program) to co-chairing the Camp Hope Program which treats cancer patients to a weekend of relaxing outdoors and participating in various camp activities. Why I Volunteer: We all want to feel useful and feel good about what we are doing in our lives. Volunteering gives me an outlet to serve the community, help others, feel useful and contribute to society in a positive way. To watch ten-year-old students realize that the decisions they make about how they treat the environment can make a difference and that they have power to make changes, is great fun to see. To know that I have helped a new mom who might be worried about bringing a new baby home, or to comfort a mom and dad in the NICU as they are looking at their one pound baby, or to hold a hand of a cancer patient a Camp Hope who just needed someone to talk to, those feelings go beyond words. A Memorable Moment Volunteering: In 1996 I started volunteering at Northside Hospital one day a week, two shifts. I also became involved with The Nature Conservancy of Georgia in 1996. There I put together a program for schools K through 12 about eco-systems. With the help of one of my brothers, who was a biologist, we also put together a program where we travelled all over the state of Georgia talking to 6,000 kids. The Nature Conservancy was wonderful to work with. Because of that work, in 2000 I was nominated and won the J.C. Penney Golden Rule award as Volunteer of the Year in Education. Hobbies/Interests: Spending time with family is Sally’s main interest. She is blessed with a husband of 43 years, three amazing daughters and four beautiful granddaughters. Holiday Wish this Season: In true charitable spirit, Sally’s holiday wish is peace to all and good health!

Many thanks to the staff at Chastain Arts Center and Gallery, an educational facility that offers classes, workshops, and exhibits in a variety of creative mediums. Patrick A. Unagashick, Head Clown, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Distinguished Clowns Corp. Years with the Organization: 8

years in this specific role

Primary Role: As head clown, Patrick is in charge of lead-

ing the annual fund-raising and smile-rising effort of close to 50 members of the Distinguished Clown Corp. Why he Volunteers: “I volunteer for many reasons. I believe we are called to give back to others. I focus on charities that involve children because I have three of my own, and I want them to learn the importance of serving others.” A Memorable Moment Volunteering: My favorite moments as a clown are seeing the look of joy on the faces of not just the kids we visit in the hospital and along the parade route, but also on the faces of the other clowns. It is great to see the other clowns having such fun while giving to others. Hobbies/Interests: Patrick’s spare time is spent in a trifecta of importance that includes family, work and church. Holiday Wish this Season: Patrick’s wish is that the Distinguished Clowns reach their 2014 goal of raising $125,000 for Children’s Healthcare this year! Courtesy Photo

n the spirit of the holidays, we invited some of our neighborhood chefs in Sandy Springs and Dunwoody to participate in our feature story for the last issue of the year. We offered up a holiday soup challenge that local chefs met with great enthusiasm – just look at the fabulous pictures and the judges’ comments. We also asked our chefs to share the nonprofit closest to their hearts, and encourage all our readers to include charitable giving (a donation of time or resources) to your holiday list this year. Some chefs also chimed in with a playlist of the tunes that keep them humming while they chop and stir. Our readers, advertisers and staff made up our crew of able

Around the table were Malika Bowling (author of Food Lovers’ Guide to Atlanta, founder of Atlanta Restaurant Blog, president of the Association of Food Bloggers); Kaile Rackley from Princeton Review; Donna Weber of Second Self Beer Company; Jackie Merkel of Parkside Parlor Blow Out and Bishoku Sushi; Phil Minnes of American Family Insurance; Maureen Goldman of Catherine’s Table; and Karyn Slovin Slovin, of Lifestyle Publications.. The newly renovated Westin Atlanta Perimeter North provided the perfect setting while beer pairings provided by Second Self and Sweetwater complemented the seasonal soups with aplomb.

Chef Tyler of The Westin Perimeter North Atlanta Preferred Brew: Second Self’s Red Hop Rye The Westin Atlanta Perimeter North is situated on a private lake, less than two miles from the mall and just 30 minutes from downtown. Their new restaurant, Savor Bar & Kitchen, is contemporary and sophisticated inspired by the flavors and personality of

the South. Guests can dine on farm-to-table dishes with influences from the Bayou, Gulf Coast and Low Country. What the Tasters Said: Gravy-ish, rustic and rich, the crispy onions and tender beef offered great texture while the base was by itself quite flavorful. Pretty presentation. Artist's Palette

Introducing Sharon Weiss Interview Sue G. Collins What brought you to our community? When we were living in Michigan, we came down to visit my brotherin-law who had relocated here. We knew immediately that we wanted to relocate here ourselves, because the Atlanta area has so much to offer in terms of economic opportunity, weather, cultural activities and affordable housing. We initiated a plan to move and settled first in an apartment and then had our house built in Sandy Springs. Describe your art: I have several areas of concentration: Food portraits – vivid representations of fruits and vegetables Landscapes – particularly those with dramatic skies or fall foliage Florals – close-ups of flowers, including some from my garden What inspires you? When I see an exceptional landscape, I am inspired to capture the essence of that scene so that others can appreciate its colors and lighting. The same applies when capturing the colors and textures of everyday items such as food. My friends and family would say my obsession with nutrition and healthy food inspires me to create the food portraits so that others will be motivated to eat healthy. Where did you study art? I have a Bachelor of Arts degree (with honors) in pictorial arts and a teaching credential from UCLA. 24

PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | December 2014

Where can people view your art? One painting is currently on view at the Spruill Gallery’s Juried Student and Faculty Show. At last year’s Spruill Gallery’s Juried Student and Faculty Show, my “Pomegranate Pair” painting won first place in the faculty category. When is your next show? I will be participating in the Good Cup, Bad Cup Show at the Spruill Education Center. Tell us about your family here in Atlanta. I have lived in Sandy Springs with my husband since 1985. We have a brother and sister-in-law and nephew in the area.

The Giving Kitchen Powered by Passion Article Meghan Loft | Photography Provided

M

ichele L. Stumpe of Buckhead is an established lawyer, philanthropic champion and a major resource to Atlanta’s thriving restaurant and hospitality industry. As an attorney with Taylor English Duma LLP, Stumpe leads the firm’s Restaurant, Food and Alcohol/Beverage Licensing practice, helping hundreds of restaurants get their start and thrive in the city’s competitive market. Stumpe’s passion and commitment to the industry are reflected not only in her legal work, but also in her ability to give back to those in need. For more than 15 years, Stumpe has volunteered as a camp counselor at Camp Twin Lakes, and this year, has been selected for inclusion into the Atlanta Chapter of Les Dames d’Escoffier. In 2002, she started the cheerleading program at the Northside Youth Organization and for five years, served as a community coach for the varsity pole vaulting and cheerleading team at Riverwood International Charter School. When client and friend, Chef Ryan Hidinger of Muss & Turner’s, was diagnosed with Stage 4 gallbladder cancer in 2012, Stumpe partnered with Local Three/Muss & Turner’s owners Chris Hall, Todd Mussman and Ryan Turner along with Kimball House owner, Michael Gallagher to form the nonprofit, The Giving Kitchen (TGK). TGK helped raise more than $300,000 to help with Hidinger’s medical costs, and today, it continues to provide crisis funds to members of Atlanta’s restaurant community facing unanticipated hardship. TGK will open its sustainable source for funding, Staplehouse Restaurant, early next year. Stumpe serves on the Staplehouse

Board. All of the restaurant’s profits will benefit TGK and its efforts to fund grants to help pay excessive medical and other expenses for members of the industry. In addition to her work with TGK, Stumpe turned another passion into an opportunity to help others. In 2011, she and her husband founded Children of Conservation, a nonprofit dedicated to the conservation and protection of endangered species in third-world countries through education, habitat preservation and wildlife sanctuary support. Children of Conservation provides educational funding for more than 100 children in five African countries, as well as other significant funding to African sanctuaries. Through her professional and personal relationships with Atlanta’s chefs and restaurant owners, Stumpe has created a network of philanthropic supporters and believers who support her work with Children of Conservation and The Giving Kitchen. The popular culinary event, Eats & Beats, and Atlanta’s greatest dining card, the Dinner & A Cause Card, both Stumpe’s creations, fund both Children of Conservation and TGK. This holiday season, Stumpe encourages others to give back. Be on the lookout for a line on your restaurant bill that allows you to add an extra few dollars in The Giving Kitchen’s Multiply Joy campaign. TheGivingKitchen.org ChildrenOfConservation.org

2014 Cayman S Two words: Absolutely Solid Article and Photography Dennis Malcolm Byron

P

orsche remains consistent as one of the top-quality brands in the automobile industry. Built in Osnabrück, Germany, this stunning 2014 Cayman S maintains the automaker’s luster thanks to the numerous amenities, sound drive experience, power and striking design which collectively turn heads at every corner. From the exterior, the optional 20-inch Carrera Classic wheels complete with the colored Porsche Crest, Bi0Zenon headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDL) for optimal visibility, and gorgeous “Platinum Silver Metallic”

paint did not disappoint. The interior only heightened the prestige of this automobile with plush, twotoned Agate Grey and Amber Orange leather ($2,815), a SportDesign steering wheel, and body- embracing premium power Sport Seats. The hi-tech interface boasting the optional Infotainment Package ($6,730) fits virtually every techy’s desire (12-speaker, 821watt Burmester Surround Sound System, Internal HD navigation system with voice and 3D, satellite radio); and Sport Chrono Package ($1,850) providing advanced suspension management, various driver modes, and a stopwatch for driving times collectively leave little to desire. The Cayman S is as fast as its sleek looks suggest. Graciously,

this review model was the manual version—something that is often a must for true performance car aficionados. (An automatic trim is also available for a tad more.) The 3.4 liter, six-cylinder aluminum heart thumps with 325 horses of power and reaches 60 miles per hour in 4.7 seconds. To add, the mid-mounted “Boxer” engine’s placement is not only advantageous, but distances the Caymans from most competitors. Located towards the center of the vehicle, maneuverability and control is heightened due to more centered gravity, which in turn distributes the weight of the car more evenly between the two axels (instead of more heaviness traditionally concentrated in the front). Safety enhancements such as the ParkAssist in both the front and rear, eight airbags, and a top-of-the-line Anti-Lock Breaking System (ABS) will boost the confidence to further explore its performance capabilities. Altogether, the Cayman S is solidly engineered, provides decent gas mileage at 23 combined city/highway, and a heart-pounding driving experience that will continue to wow sports car enthusiasts for years to come. Prospective buyers of this automobile are given a plethora of optional packages starting at the base price of $63,800, so there will be little left to the imagination of how exceptional this German gem can be.

Parting Thoughts

Stop Wrapping, Start Remembering Article Rhiannon Bankes

D

ecember is a month of remembrance and celebrations, but too often it is also a month of over-whelming obligations and rampant commercialism. The combination of guilt, stress, lack of sleep, and overspending tend to turn the last month of the year into a whirlwind of overextended schedules. Don’t let negative emotions and unrealistic expectations take over this season. You won’t get a prize if you pack every spare moment with errands, shopping and trying to make everything perfect. If anything you will run yourself down and get a cold or worse. Promise yourself that this year you will focus on your family, friends and yourself. Let go of the picture you have in your mind of the perfect holiday setting. Whether that image is of an immaculately set dinner table, your pets gazing lovingly at your Christmas tree, or your children deli-cately lighting the menorah, it’s rarely going to happen. What will happen is someone will spill wine on your antique tablecloth, your dog will chase your cat up the tree, and your child will try to light all the candles on the menorah the first night, not to mention their sibling’s hair. No one will remember how perfectly pressed your napkins were, but they are going to remember the touch football game everyone played in the back yard after the meal. Crank up the holiday music and make cookies. Snuggle on the couch to watch a movie marathon or football game. Make a new tradition, sometimes the sillier the better: Ice cream sundaes for breakfast or making a snowman with out the snow. Pick a craft to make as a family or organize a scavenger hunt. Write letters to each other and yourself. Stick a short note in your holiday deco-rations box listing this season’s successful and not-so-successful ad-

ventures. When you open the box next year you will remember how frustrated you were that you tried to make homemade cranberry sauce when everyone just wanted the canned kind, but how much everyone loved spending a whole Saturday in their pajamas. Volunteer time to a charity or perform a community service project with your friends. Send care packages to military personnel and visit your local nursing homes. This holiday season vow to spend fewer afternoons fighting the holiday crowds at the mall and more time on fulfilling activities. Make sure to allow yourself plenty of down time. A nice glass of wine or cocoa by the fire, or a hot bubble bath, puts a lot in perspective at the end of a long day. Reflect on all you have achieved in 2014 and decide what your goals are for the new year. Ask yourself what has made you smile the most this year and holiday season. Focus on incorporating those things into your 2015 schedule. Don’t drain yourself this December. Fill yourself with the hope and love of the season…and maybe a few more of those cookies.
