Happy Summer, Sandy Springs and Dunwoody!

J

ust when I think this job couldn’t get any better, someone* comes up with the great idea to do a July feature about the unique and fab summer cocktails being shaken and stirred around town. Lucky for me, the wonderfully talented photographer, Dennis Malcolm Byron, was willing to come along for our afternoon of “research,” and help sip and shoot the gorgeous cocktails we chose to introduce to you. Our friends at UBER set us up with cars so we didn’t have to worry about anything except where to find the best lighting. I recommend you, too, get the UBER app and enjoy a safe and carefree summer around town. Check out some of my favorite chill tunes and share yours on our Facebook page. We love to hear from you!

The largest expansion in the park’s 47-year history, Hurricane Harbor boasts four new water attractions, including the world’s first hybrid zero-gravity slide, spans seven acres and is free with admission to Six Flags Over Georgia. Sherman’s War On Our Families Intimate Exhibit “The Civil War in Sandy Springs” Explores Lesser-Known Facts Article Helen Grebe | Photography Cindy Mayer

I

n the turbulent summer of 1864, the Union Army—comprised of more than 100,000 soldiers--occupied the small farming community of Sandy Springs (population 1,000). Those weeks changed the lives of every family that lived through them. Until now, little has been known about the intimate daily portrait of the families (women, children and elders) who lived through those turbulent times. Enter Sandy Springs Heritage Muse-

um’s exhibit, “The Civil War in Sandy Springs” which is offered through April 1, 2015. The exhibit, based on never-before published diaries and newly discovered letters, details the first- hand accounts and struggles of 1,000 local, poor farming families whose food and scarce provisions were used to feed and provide for 100,000 Union Soldiers. The carnage and chilling details can be previewed for the first time in the exhibit which also includes family heirlooms and heritage sandy springs museum artifacts, treasured for 150 years, includ6075 Sandy Springs Circle ing sewing kits, tobacco pipes, collapsible HeritageSandySprings.org cups and actual guns and cannon shells 404.851.9111 that terrorized the small community during the long summer of Union occuCivil War Speaker Series pation. Discovering the untold story of 7-8:30 p.m., free the Civil War through detailed accounts July 24 from the women and families who lived Steve Davis: through them is a history buff’s dream. What the Yankees Did to Us Adding to the treasure trove is the fact August 14 that admission is free on Wednesdays and John Inscoe: Saturdays, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. or by apGeorgia’s Unknown Civil War History pointment for small groups.

Touring the intimate exhibit packs a mighty punch. “People want to know the history in their backyard,” notes Kimberly Brigance, director of Historic Resources & Programs. “This is the story of the individuals who stayed behind in the Civil War. It’s the account of women and young children who were nutritionally and defensively vulnerable.” Excerpts from a collection of letters written by Nellie Jett, wife of Richard Burch Jett (Confederate Army) provide glimpses of the burden placed upon those in the South along with an intimate look at Sherman’s brilliant psychological warfare in action, launched to break down soldiers’ families. Jett wrote these alarming lines to her husband while listening to the battle of Resaca as the sound of 100,000 Union Army march directly toward her small homestead: “I know if the main army falls back here, we will perish. I don’t know what to do. I ain’t gonna run. I ain’t got the money to take us off, so we will have to stand the test.” Union references also add to the terror: “Not many minutes after coming into camp, every fence and moveable thing in sight is pulled down to make the fires. God pity this south land when we are done with it.” --Union pvt. Cooke The verbage can be disturbing, referencing accounts of Southern women having to go in to individual Union camps “to make arrangements” for food for their “sallow-eyed children,” writes one Union soldier. It puts a new perspective on the term

sleeping with the enemy, which is a daily act of survival for Confederate Soldiers’ wives. Jett writes in one of her last letters to her husband: “I have never known hard times before. I’m going to sell the mule. I can’t feed him. I would sell him for corn. I want you to come home if you can. If you come home, I will tell you a heap I can’t write.” What can she tell him? What can he tell her, both harboring private horrors, yet horrors they must rise above to rebuild the South for the little of their brethren that are left.

A Path to Friendships and Commitment What Leadership Sandy Springs Means artIcle anne boatWrIght | PhotograPhy ProvIDeD

W

hat happens when 32 strangers of diverse civic, cultural and professional backgrounds come together? If it is under the auspices of Leadership Sandy Springs (LSS), they experience deeper community connections, stronger leadership skills and new friendships and business relationships likely to last a lifetime. Through Leadership Sandy Springs, these emerging leaders are now engaged and inspired to help shape a thriving Sandy Springs. During their nine-month program, the class focused on leadership development and program days centered on vital community issues such as city government, social services, environment, public safety and economic development. Additionally, a Community Connections program delivered hands-on opportunities for class members to plan and implement city-wide projects to enrich Sandy Springs, including Volunteer for a Better Sandy Springs, Movies by Moonlight, and Youth Leadership Sandy Springs. Three class members shared their stories of what they learned about leadership in the 21st century and how it helped them. Jason Lina, certified financial planner for Resource Plan14 PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | July 2014

ning Group, entered the LSS program with a desire to help improve his community. “My passion is making things better – processes, tools, procedures, or ways of looking at a problem,” he shares. Taking it to the next level, Lina hoped to utilize those skills not only in the business world but expand that passion to non-profits or civic life. Sherwin Lewis-Nelson, of GV Financial Advisors, went into the class experience with few preconceived ideas and expectations. “I was a complete novice to leadership classes,” she recalls. “A colleague raved about the program, so I entered it with the expectation that I would learn about the community in which I work and meet some neat people with whom I could have mutual business interests. From the opening retreat, I gained much more.” To build the foundation of the team from the ground up, LSS begins the course with an overnight retreat in north Georgia. Class member Chip Houston, head of Middle School for Mount Vernon Presbyterian School, recalls an eye-opening experience at that kick-off event. Participants were asked to write about a particular, very elementary object and found that each response was unique yet complementary.

“This exercise was one of the most powerful takeaways for me from our retreat,” he explains. “It helped me to not only become more aware of the differences among us, but that those differences are all strengths. And, that any exceptional team needs to be comprised of a diversity of these strengths, all complementing one another, adding value, and filling in gaps. An exceptional leader will know how to maximize and multiply their collective inf luence.” All three concluded they learned more about the city in which they live and work, and forged a bond with one another. Lewis-Nelson valued the experience for many reasons. “I gained tremendous insight into my own leadership style,” she says. “I learned to better engage in teams with new people – not just the bubble of my firm of 16 years. As a result, I feel a part of the Sandy Springs community and formed some lifelong friends.” Lina says the experience provided a wide range of benefits. “I expected Leadership Sandy Springs to be a donation of my time, service, and thinking,” he says. “The program really gave to me far more than I gave to it. My experience has been richly rewarding -packed full of education, memories, and good friendships and a strong network of present and future community leaders that I now call good friends.” Houston felt the program expanded his thinking about leadership and community. “Our community is growing, changing, and we are ever dependent on each of the other parts,” he says. “Our monthly themed days (of LSS class) offered the opportunity to be among the leaders and stakeholders in Sandy Springs. Leadership Sandy Springs was about three things for me: knowledge, relationships and action. It has opened my eyes.”

Road Trip

Saint Simons Island:

Living it up at the King and Prince Article and Photography Ruksana Hussain

I

n just a few hours drive from Atlanta you will land on the island of Saint Simons – one of many that form the Golden Isles along the Georgian coast. Along a semi-secluded stretch of the shoreline is nestled the King and Prince Beach and Golf Resort – Saint Simons’ crowning glory and a member of the Historical Hotels of America, one of only six properties in the state. The island offers an enticing mix of natural beauty, rich history, quaint charm and fair weather all year round but the resort holds its own appeal, offering a 24/7 view of and private access to the beach, crowned by a sea-side pool. Early morning walks on the beach are no more

16 PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | July 2014

a dream. Better yet, choose one of the oceanfront rooms for your stay and you can hear the sound of the waves all day and night. Built in 1935, the resort operated as a naval training facility and radar station during World War II. Previously a popular dance club, it was restored to its original glamour and remodeled as a luxury resort. Several stained glass windows around the resort speak volumes of the historic events witnessed at this venue. Make sure you see all nine. The King and Prince is also just minutes away from sight-seeing near the village pier’s Lighthouse Museum and Christ Church Frederica. Hit up a night-time ghost tour with Lighthouse Trolleys or a historic Colonial Island trolley tour to learn more about this magical place. Fishing is welcome and encouraged on the island, too. You can opt for Credle’s Adventures dolphin tour or sail out on a shrimping trip aboard the Lady Jane. Staying active is easy. Bikes, kayaks and stand-up paddle boards can be rented from local outfitters. Golf on your mind? Then you’ve come to one of Georgia’s finest at the King and Prince. Luxuriously designed amidst ancient oaks and vast salt marshes, it is one of the hottest golfing destinations in the nation. Of course, a coastal location guarantees fresh coastal cuisine and there are options aplenty to keep your appetite at bay. ECHO is the resort’s newly remodeled oceanfront restaurant. An open kitchen

offers up a fresh, contemporary take on an easy-going vibe that only island-time can offer. Grab a meal under the stars on the patio adjacent to the pool and almost on the ocean itself at peak tide times. With broad, sweeping views of the ocean, ECHO offers a delectable menu be it breakfast, lunch or dinner. Chef James Flack believes in keeping it local and nurturing long relationships with purveyors so be it the quail or the steak, shrimp and grits or desserts, rest assured chef knows where it was sourced and has added his special spin to the preparation and presentation. Personal lunch favorites were the scallops with crispy poached egg and the black grouper sandwich with peach barbecue sauce. Sugar lovers, be sure to have the peach melba crumble and s’mores bomb. If you decide to dine out on the town, Chef Dave Snyder has you covered with his sister restaurants Halyards and Tramici. Hal-

yards offers a higher-end experience with a casual and lounge ambience that adds to the fine-dining mood. Start with the fresh and crunchy Asian influenced tuna tartar or veal/beef minced smooth meatloaf bites. Entrees on the menu include such offerings as fish tacos, beef and cashew stir fry, coconut red curry risotto and more. And everything here is made from scratch. Tramici, on the other hand, plays more to the role of neighborhood hangout, with an indoor and outdoor courtyard-style seating space, and Italian fare that’s flavorful and fragrant, simple and appetizing. It shouldn’t take much more convincing than that for you to drive out on your own Saint Simons adventure or for a relaxing family vacation at the King and Prince. No matter the event, a large conference or an intimate wedding, an annual family reunion or a girlfriend’s getaway, the resort affords scenic views and superior accommodations to make your trip truly memorable.

With experience opening various restaurants in Las Vegas and Atlanta, Michelle Germain brings a vast knowledge of mixology that has already greatly impacted the bar program at 5 Seasons. Germain shares: “I’m excited to be here! The fresh, organic, locally grown ingredients used in the kitchen allow me access to those same ingredients in my cocktails.” Clearly she has jumped in, working with the chefs to whip up infusions such as raspberry-mint-infused gin, chocolate-vanilla-infused whiskey and ginger-cucumber-cilantro-infused vodka among other delicious flavor combinations.

They believe in real food. That is why the menu features grassfed beef, pastured poultry and pork, and local, organic fruits and vegetables along with sustainably sourced seafood brought in from the Gulf. 5 Seasons is a strong member and supporter of the community. This begins with sourcing from local farmers who in turn use our spent grain from brewing to feed their livestock and use in their fields. This continues as they help local corporations, charities and families gather to celebrate a variety of occasions. 5600 Roswell Road, Sandy Springs 5SeasonsBrewing.com 404.255.5911

es, school’s out. Yes, it is summer. Yes, you are invariably going to be at the receiving end of ‘I’m bored’ chiming at you all day. Fear not! Here is a roundup of just the right bunch of fun activities for your restless young ones. For the green-thumbed: Trees Atlanta has an exciting new summer camp for Atlanta high school students! The inaugural Junior TreeKeepers Program offers five days of interactive and handson activities in environmental science. Children will explore 200-year-old forests, learn about GPS orienteering, participate in nature projects, and have fun with scavenger hunts and biking. Field trips to local attractions such as the Atlanta BeltLine Arboretum and Stone Mountain are included. A summertime extension of Trees Atlanta’s popular youth environmental education program, offered for free to more than 20 schools in the metro Atlanta area, Junior TreeKeepers educates children about Atlanta’s urban forests, pollinator insects, community connections and environmental stewardship. If you’re looking to get the kids out of the house and out exploring this summer, register them for Junior TreeKeepers with TreesAtlanta.org

1956 Buick Centurion

1959 Cadillac Cyclone For the creatively-inclined: The High Museum’s latest exhibit “Dream Cars: Innovative Design, Visionary Ideas” is for both the design devils and the car crazies. Inventive, historic concept cars are on display including some of the rarest, most imaginative designs by Ferrari, Bugatti, General Motors and Porsche. Bringing together 17 concept cars from across Europe and the U.S. from the early 1930s to the 21st century, the exhibit pairs conceptual drawings, patents and scale models with realized cars, demonstrating how their experimental designs advanced ideas of progress and changed the automobile from an object of function to a symbol of future possibilities. Highlights include the electric bubble car, Scarab, the genesis of the contemporary minivan, and the BMW “GINA Light Visionary Model” featuring an exterior made of fabric, among others. Visit High.org for details.

Where freedom comes with a choice of sides.

For the adventure-mongers: Georgia State Parks offer a plethora of options. Archery ranges abound at Elijah Clark, Panola Mountain, and Victoria Bryant State Parks. While there is a small fee to use most archery ranges, Tallulah Gorge has a range available free of charge and you can bring your own equipment or rent from park offices. You can also saddle up and indulge in some equestrian activities at several Georgia state parks including Cloudland Canyon which has new riding trails. Most parks also provide equestrian campsites, horse stalls and riding rings, and equestrian adventures for every level. Also, have you considered Geocaching? Using just your smart phone and a GPS app, search dozens of state parks and historic site locations to discover hidden containers or caches. In other words, a modern day treasure hunt, and you can join the “GeoCampers” for such events at Red Top Mountain State Park. GAStateParks.org

And if you simply want an indoor space where you can spend hours on end (and it’s not a mall) then consider perfecting your bowling skills all summer long. Keep your wallet and your kids happy with the Stars and Strikes Kids Bowl Free Program. Choose from five Georgia locations. The Sandy Springs location also has the 710 Grille attached if you want to catch a quick bite as well. Children under the age of 15 who have registered for the program receive two free games of bowling, Monday through Saturday, all summer long. All you cover is the shoe rental! The program runs through August 31 and is the perfect blend of fun and physical activity, especially if your children don’t tire easily. Visit StarsAndStrikes.com for details.

Tuscan Affair – Taverna Fiorentina Article Ruksana Hussain | Photography Heidi Geldhauser

Looks like: Cozy dining ambience tucked away in the corner of a strip mall. In the middle of all the action yet calm all around. Cheerful Jasmin, one of the co-owners, welcomes guests to their tables. Outdoor patio space or indoor dim-lit restaurant is equally inviting. Chef Paolo comes by to say hello. Encompassed by small yet comfy bar in one end and a floor to ceiling wine rack on the other. Semi-open kitchen space front and center gives you a hint of your upcoming meal. Sounds like: Happy banter. Both, neighborhood regulars and

newcomers gather here for a drink at the bar, dinner with family and friends, conversations and conviviality. Jasmin is happy to direct your attention to a must-try wine or head you in the right direction along with your food choices. Friendly crew is equally happy to aid your libation or menu choices. You are at ease and at home, all at once. Smells like: Tuscan kitchen flavors galore. Carpaccio di Manzo Cirpriani – thinly slices beef tenderloin. Shrimp and garbanzo soup. Cappellacci di Zucca - Butternut squash ravioli made in-house. Coniglio alla Genovese – Genoa-style slow-roasted rabbit marinated with red wine and herbs, potatoes and sautéed spinach. Veal Osso Buco – tender flavorful slow-braised veal shank served on a bed of fragrant risotto Milanese.

26 PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | July 2014

Who: Executive Chef Paolo Tondo and Sommelier Jasmin Scott are

the co-owners of this hidden but highly recommended culinary classic. Regaling Atlantans with Fiorentine flavors for more than seven years. Jasmin grew up in Spain and curates the award-winning wine program that features Tuscan red, Italian regional red and white varieties. Paolo offers classic Florentine fare as well as contemporary dishes. A comfortable yet sophisticated dining experience. USP: Watch out for their wine dinners hosted the last Thursday of every month featuring a four-course meal, starting with an antipasti reception. Other menu highlights include Duck Tortellini with creamy porcini mushroom sauce and Black ink Linguini al Cartaccio – squid ink-infused linguini baked in parchment with calamari and mussels. To top it all - bread pudding, simple and sweet, just the way momma made it.

rowing up in Michigan, on a two acre lawn of flat Kentucky Bluegrass, I learned to drive our Sears Craftsman mower before I could ride a bike. I’m afraid our landscaping routine didn’t include much more than three hours of mowing and dumping bag after bag of cuttings into the adjoining empty field. Had we known about what the kind folks at NG Turf call Grasscycling, I am sure our lawn would have been healthier and more lush than the Jones’ next door! Lucky for you, we are sharing these mowing tips, just in time for your summer of fun. Q: Should I bag my clippings or leave them on the lawn after mowing? Grasscycling is the natural recycling of grass clippings by leaving them on the lawn after mowing. It saves time, effort and, when done properly, is good for the environment and health of the grass. According to one study, the time can be reduced by 35 minutes for each mowing. Grasscycling aids soil fertility because clippings rapidly decompose, returning nitrogen and other valuable nutrients to the soil. Q: Define “Proper Mowing.” Proper mowing is the key to successful grasscycling. All mowers can be “grasscyclers,” and no special equipment is needed. However,

some manufacturers sell mower attachments that chop clippings into finer pieces and can improve a mower’s grasscycling performance. Proper mowing means: • Cutting the grass at the recommended height • Maintaining a sharp mower blade • Mowing when the grass is dry • Mowing often enough to remove no more than one-third of the plant height Q: Do clippings lead to thatch? It has been a commonly held belief that grass clippings were a major cause of thatch, and that removing clippings would slow thatch development. Research has determined that thatch buildup is caused by grass stems, shoots and roots – not clippings. Q: When do I fertilize my lawn this summer? A fertilization program should be based on lawn needs, maintenance practices and desired appearance and the turf variety will determine your specific “fertility schedule.”

Parting Thoughts

A Summer State of Mind WORDS Ben Hammett Walkuski

M

y summers as a child were so wild and free that the realities of adulthood hit me like a belly flop in the shallow end. The only child of divorced parents, each year I would return to my native Ohio from nearby Indiana to spend summers with my father. Because this was the most time he and I had together the entire year, my dad made sure that every moment was fun-filled and memorable. Weekdays I attended a nearby summer day camp, which offered specialized programming based on your areas of interest: sports, art, travel, etc. Evenings and weekends brought with them cook-outs on the deck, outings to the nearby swimming pool and miniature golf course, baseball games, bike rides, hikes in the woods, weekend trips to Lake Erie, and helping tend to the lawn and gardens of my father’s sprawling, three-acre property. Because these three months of the year were essentially spent away from home, my summers truly were a vacation. Basking in the warmth of the summer sun, enjoying long days and cool nights free from responsibilities, spoiled by family who relished this precious time together, I never had it so good. So good, in fact, that I spend each of my summers as an adult either dreaming of an experience like my childhood or attempting to recreate it. After nearly

34 PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | July 2014

three years here in Atlanta, I’ve discovered this is a place where the summer vacation isn’t just a dream, but an achievable reality. Atlanta is a city made for summer. Atlanta’s weather makes most of the year feel like summer, so from April through October I can enjoy the same kind of outdoor fun that was previously limited to only three months. Atlanta’s location puts me in such close proximity to the beach that I can wake up on Saturday morning, decide I want my toes in the sand, and by 1:00 that afternoon I’ve got a cocktail in my hand and an ocean or a gulf in my sights. Atlanta’s natural beauty makes me feel like I’ve got the biggest lawn on the block, which I don’t have to mow. Whether I’m relaxing under a tree at Lullwater Park, swimming in the Piedmont Park pool, or taking a leisurely stroll along the Beltline, Atlanta is blessed with beautiful and abundant greenspace. Whether you are a participant or a spectator, the diversity of Atlanta’s artistic, athletic, cultural, culinary, historical, and recreational activities can keep your mind, body, and spirit engaged on all of summer’s long, warm days and (almost) cool nights. For me, summer is no longer just a three-month vacation—it’s a year-round state of mind. And it can be yours, too.
