Hello Neighbors

I

admit it. I love movie stars. When I worked for a yacht charter agent in St. Thomas, John Travolta, Kirstie Alley and their entourage sailed out on one of our crewed yachts. All week, I pulled private and confidential letters and correspondence off the fax machine for the actor (that was years before email and smart phones), sealing them in envelopes and placing them clandestinely in the captain’s mailbox. It was my duty. When Mr. Travolta sauntered down the dock toward the office, I bolted to the front desk and nonchalantly greeted him, asking how I could help (I knew darn well he wanted those faxes, but I wanted to prolong the “conversation” as long as possible). He was friendly and equally as nonchalant, in his baseball tee and sweat pants (looking adorable). And, when I later spotted Mikhail Baryshnikov waiting near my gate at the Miami airport, I breathed deeply, smiled and casually said hello. He shook my hand and my day was made. What is it about celebs that make our hearts skip a beat? It’s talent, beauty and the big screen and big stage. There are stars all over Atlanta these days! Enjoy the stories in this issue about the movie industry and talented neighbors making art and music. Get out and spend the afternoon at a nearby gallery or museum. We’re so lucky to have so many, so close.

MAD HATTERS PARTY The dining room of Mount Vernon Towers, the senior independent living community in the heart of Sandy Springs, resembled the Red Queen’s garden from Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Members of the National Charity League’s Dunwoody chapter hosted the Second Annual Mad Hatter Tea Party for the ‘Nifty Nineties’ – a vibrant group of 90+ year-old residents who live at Mount Vernon Towers. Mount Vernon Towers dedicates this year’s Tea Party to the memory of Maureen Jensen, a beloved resident who first coined the name, “Nifty Ninety,” and who worked tirelessly to promote their long-lived wisdom, wit and treasured memories. An RN by education and florist by avocation, Maureen handcrafted innumerable mementos and delivered the surprises, filled with candies, for every holiday occasion throughout the year. Her loving heart and helping hands spread much sunshine and laughter among ‘her’ Nifty Nineties at Mount Vernon Towers. National Charity League, Inc. is a mother-daughter organization dedicated to fostering the mother-daughter relationship through community service, leadership development and cultural experiences. The Serious Business of Play Jane Turner and The Children’s Museum of Atlanta Article Shannon King | Photography Jeff Roffman

T

hey say, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy,” and Jane Turner couldn’t agree more. As executive director of The Children’s Museum of Atlanta, Turner understands playtime is serious business. “Many may think it’s all fun and games,” she says, “but research shows a direct link between imaginative, creative play and the healthy development of our youth.” Although her career was not originally arts-focused, Turner has always held a deep interest in its impact on the community. After moving to Atlanta with her family in 1992, Turner was introduced to the rich, vibrant arts scene of the city through Georgia Shakespeare. “I saw firsthand how essential the arts are to the vitality and culture of our community,” says Turner, a Sandy Springs resident. “More importantly, I saw how transformative they can be for an individual.” Turner’s involvement at Georgia Shakespeare was a natural progression to her work at The Children’s Museum. She understood the importance of the 275 Centennial Olympic Park Dr arts as a source of education and ChildrensMuseumAtlanta.org inspiration, and she believed in404.659.KIDS troducing this learning would Facebook: ImagineItCMA be most effective at an early age. The Museum was still relatively new in Atlanta when Turner started, but it was (and still is) unlike anything being offered in the city. She remembers feeling moved by its pioneering environment, its role as a “town square” for families and its dedication to making learning exciting. “Raising children rests on the shoulders of parents, but it also resides with the community as a whole. Our future teachers, doctors, artists, corporate and political leaders are all children. I wanted to play a part in developing the most informed and creative talent as possible, and The Museum is the perfect outlet for that,” says Turner. The premise for The Children’s Museum is the Power of Play, but how exactly does playtime translate to serious learning? Turner explains through active play, children develop executive cognitive function, which enables them to better exert self-control and discipline – skills that are essential for healthy childhood (and adult) development. It allows children to form their own rules, communicate with others, use their imaginations and engage in new activities. There have also been numerous studies that reveal children who are

encouraged to play will do better in school and create more innovative solutions to problems. The Museum supports the power of play by sparking imagination and discovery through educational exhibitions, daily programming and permanent learning zones. Children can explore many subjects, including nutrition, science, math, literature and more, in an interactive environment. The Museum also collaborates with various organizations, experts, educators, parents and community leaders to add depth to its programs, helping to extend its mission beyond Museum walls. Despite its power, many of us stop playing. “Play shouldn’t be considered a luxury – it’s a necessity for both children and adults,” says Turner. “Whether it’s at The Museum with your children or at home by yourself, indulge in active play and you’ll see just how productive it can be.”

Feature Exhibit: Sonic Sensation Now through June 1 Listen up! The newest exhibit at The Children’s Museum of Atlanta invites families to sound off on a multi-sensory adventure. This new, highly engaging exhibit offers a fun and informative opportunity for children to understand the anatomy, measurement and science of sound. The exhibit features a variety of interactive, hands-on activities for children to see, feel and hear sound. Visitors can experiment with pitch, test their listening skills, make a movie soundtrack and much more. As children engage with multiple learning stations throughout the exhibit, they will discover key listening skills through the science of sound and hearing.

Know Your Options

What are the most common non-invasive procedures that you treat at your office?

Non-invasive Alternatives to Surgery By Andrea Janise | Photo courtesy of Total HealthCare Medical Centers

E

ver had an injury? Whether sports, car or accident related, injuries are treated by most doctors with a combination of prescription drugs and surgery. But the truth is, this isn’t your only option. The physicians at Total HealthCare Medical Centers specialize in non-invasive options to surgery and have had a lot of success doing it. And the best part, all of these non-invasive procedures are covered by your insurance. We had the chance to sit down with Dr. Millin of Total HealthCare Medical Centers with offices in both Sandy Springs and Norcross to find out more about the alternative therapy. Frankly, were amazed by what they are able to do. How does non-invasive technology work?

When patients go to the doctor they receive x-rays, prescriptions for pain meds, and then a corticosteroid injection, which you might not consider invasive procedures. However, all the above listed treatments are setting the patient up for surgery, be it knee replacements or spinal fusions, and you can’t get more invasive than surgery. Our approach is different; we want to eliminate the chances of having surgery from the very beginning and not prepare the patient for it. We use effective biological medicines—no artificial chemicals—made of amino acids, minerals and botanicals that are intended to provide relief of arthritic symptoms and promote the regeneration of healthy connective tissue function. Are there new innovations in non-invasive procedures, especially in more common issues with knee pain, back pain and joint pain?

These non-invasive procedures have been around for years, though more widely used in Europe. We have successfully helped thousands of patients over the past nine years to recover from debilitating knee, back, neck and joint pains.

If you are asking what we treat with our procedures then it would be headaches, neck pain, TMJ issues, back pain, hip pain, joint pain; connective tissue disorders like tendonitis; nerve pain like sciatica; auto and work related injuries such as whiplash, carpal tunnel syndrome and sprain injuries; sports injuries; muscle spasms and disc injuries. What myths are out there about the non-invasive surgery?

Because a lot of these treatments and services are not utilized by medical professionals as often as steroid injections, this doesn’t mean they are less effective. In fact the opposite is true; in most cases, they are more successful, fixing the root of the problem, not just treating the symptoms. Many think it is impossible to restore function in a seriously degenerated disc or joint. That’s not true, it is possible to restore and regenerate tissue, muscle, joints and slow the progression of degeneration. The only option for osteoarthritis in your knees is a knee replacement; we have been very successful with eliminating knee replacement surgery for many of our patients, even patients with significant damage. How long do different treatments typically take?

Patient visits last about 45 minutes to an hour. We provide treatment for five to ten weeks depending on the seriousness of the condition, reason for the pain, and the patients overall health. We usually treat our patients multiple times a week since we are jumpstarting the body’s own healing mechanism. It’s like going to the gym—it’s a re-education and training processes, and each visit builds on the next. As our providers make small changes, small changes lead to life changes that not only stop the pain, but eliminate the chances of them reoccurring. The body will adapt to poor posture, either as a result of an accident of daily life, which can cause long term damage to the body. So undoing a lifetime of poor habits or damage can be challenging and it takes time; change is rarely something we acclimate to overnight. We are not a quick fix but we TotalHealthMed.com are a fix, we are not a Band-Aid to the rea780.416.9995 son the pain exists or the symptoms.

in Dunwoody and Sandy Springs

Atlanta has become the television and movie capital of the South. Article Rhiannon Bankes

A

s one of the top production locations in the country, Georgia’s film and television industry is booming. According to the state’s tourism board, more than 700 feature films, TV movies, TV series, single episodes and pilots have been produced here since 1972. In 2012 alone, $3.1 billion in production revenue was generated and more than 25,000 Georgia residents are now directly employed in film and television production with 11,000 employed full time. Generally, a medium budget feature film employs 150-175 people, while a larger production hires 200-250 people. The industry continues to grow with 30 film and television suppliers expanding or relocating to Georgia in the last six years. Location diversity partnered with tax incentives are drawing production companies to our state. Georgia’s four well-defined seasons, two deep-water ports, railroads, beaches, mountains, forests, and rivers provide virtually any location and generally permit-free shooting. In most cases, permits are not required for filming on private property (beyond the owner’s permission) unless public prop18 PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | March 2014

erty is impacted. As for tax incentives, in 2002, a point of purchase sales and use tax exemption was introduced. In 2005, Governor Sonny Perdue signed into law the Georgia Entertainment Industry Investment Act including incentives to equipment expenses, inventory and infrastructure. So, qualified new investments of $50,000 or more in manufacturing or telecommunication earn a tax credit of between 1 and 5 percent of the investment with a state tax credit of up to 30 percent for qualified productions. These tax incentives grow the state economy by encouraging private partners to build sound stages, post-production facilities and additional infrastructure to support large-scale productions, which provide jobs for Georgians. These incentives help businesses like Atlanta’s Tyler Perry Studios, Turner Studios and Rainforest Films, The Atlanta Film Festival, and the Hunger Games trilogy. Hollywood has now come to Atlanta’s Golden Corridor: Sandy Springs and Dunwoody. Clint Eastwood, Amy Adams and Justin Timberlake filmed Trouble with the Curve on Dunwoody High School’s

Groove: A Community Recording Studio

or amateur singers, songwriters and musicians, the dream of recording music in a professional studio usually remains just that: a dream. If your shower is the closest you’ve come to a recording studio, and your hairbrush is the only microphone you’ve ever known, your luck may be about to change. A local musician wants to give every budding star, young and old, the opportunity to have an authentic, recording studio experience right here in Atlanta. Lifelong musician, professional guitarist and career guitar instructor Eric Stallings has music in his blood. A Georgia native, Stallings grew up in a very musical household thanks to his mother, a classically trained pianist. His earliest musical influences were the legendary composers Bach and Beethoven, and he was playing notes on a grand piano at the age of five. As Stallings grew up, his passion for music grew right along with him: Upon hearing his first Beatles song at the age of 10, he picked up the guitar and never put it down. Since then, he has enjoyed every note he has played—good or bad (he says). It was the sound of the Beatles playing over the speakers at a bowling alley one Friday night that inspired Stallings. “I couldn’t believe the power behind this new sound, and I loved the way it made me feel,” he says. “I have been chasing that sound my entire life, and decided that was my destiny—to create that sound.” After a childhood as an Air Force brat, including relocations to New York, Missouri, California and Canada, Stallings returned to Atlanta and earned a marketing degree from Georgia State University. Equipped with the confidence and compassion that he developed as a result of his nomadic childhood, Stallings enjoyed a successful career as a business owner for many years. Once he was in a place where he could assess his professional life, Stallings decided to return to his one true passion: the guitar. By applying the education and experience he gained from a career in business, Stallings had soon built another successful venture: an elite guitar studio in which he taught more than 250 students. Never one to rest on his laurels, Stallings then created a 20 PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | March 2014

state-of-the-art recording studio business as another way of sharing his passion with the world. The Groove Studio exists to facilitate the process of the music experience that each client wants. “We want to make the artist’s dream of pursuing their musical ambitions come true, while creating a comfortable and positive environment,” Stallings says. It is a cozy place that fosters creativity. Unlike the vast majority of recording studios, what sets The Groove Studio apart is its desire and ability to create a unique sense of community and collaboration among musicians. Recent success stories include a Christmas CD he produced for one client who gave the album to friends and family in her wedding gift bags. “I had a lot of fun and it was practical and impactful,” Stallings recalls. Another memorable recording experience was a keepsake audio he produced for one client in honor of his father’s 70th birthday. This particular family happened to be very musical, and each member of the clan recorded a different song for their beloved patriarch. “Everyone had a part in making this special gift. I was able to capture the voice of the newest baby in the family crying, the two year-old singing “Twinkle, Twinkle,” the pre-teens playing fiddle, and the adults singing in harmony. It was really cool and special to be a part of this family’s tribute to their loved one,” Stallings says.

ou may know the LiviRae Lingerie boutique from the Lifetime television series Double Divas where every customer has a story and they have the solution all the way up to 50N. Owners Molly Hopkins and Cynthia Decker met doing alterations and opened their own shop in 2006, moving to their current location in 2010. LiviRae Lingerie was selected among boutiques from all across the U.S. for the series. Filming took place on location at the shop and allowed an inside view into LiviRae's unique approach – blending empathy, tell-it-like-it-is truthfulness and Southern quirk. Season 1 of Double Divas premiered in January 2013, and it gained such a strong following that it returned for Season 2 in August of the same year. Due to high demand for the show, Double Divas is now airing in international markets including Europe and South America. This exposure has allowed LiviRae's owners Molly and Cynthia to educate millions of viewers about the importance of bra fit. Being on TV has helped LiviRae to reach beyond its home base in Georgia to increase breast health awareness and uplift women all over the world. LiviRae is excited to launch its new website with global e-commerce capabilities so that Double Divas fans can find their fit and purchase comfortable bras as seen on the show. Now they, along with their staff of 25, provide education about proper bra fit as well as high-quality products that cater to women of every body type. LiviRae Lingerie specializes in bra fittings, but they also create custom lingerie, as well as carry plus-size, augmentation, and mastectomy bras. LiviRae Lingerie strives to provides a lingerie experience that helps women feel confident and comfortable. According to the Double Divas only 15% of women are wearing the correct size bra! They say "Don't be scared of the alphabet," and exclaim that you wouldn't try to wear a size 7 shoe if you were a size 9, so don't try to squeeze into an ill-fitting bra! The women educate clients on healthy and proper fit methods for optimum bust health and once a client's correct size is determined, Decker, 22 PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | March 2014

Hopkins, or one of their staff will assist the client with finding three to four bras to begin their new bra wardrobe. They are trying to change the mindset of women when it comes to bra wardrobes. They point out that most women have twenty or more pairs of shoes, but think they only need one or two bras. They recommend three to four bras as a starting point to allow a client to have one to wash, one to wear, one to rest, and one so you do not repeat wearing a bra but every four days. The client can then increase their collection to seven bras within a year (not counting strapless and sports bras.) This rotation cuts down on the wear and tear of bras, and with proper care they should last a couple of years. Decker and Hopkins advise that bras only be washed every three to four wearings using Lasting Care wash, not Woolite (Woolite and other detergents such as Gain and Tide contain bleaching agents that break down the elastic in bras.) Hand washing is recommended but if you machine wash always use a mesh bag on the gentle cycle using Lasting Care soap and hang to dry. LiviRae also mends and repairs their bras. If a wire pops out, they will put it back in for free. If a bra stretches, they will alter it down for free and make it tight again. Try getting that kind of service from a mall bra store! LiviRae also carries Snug camis, Hook Me Up shapewear with various levels of control, Hanky Panky one-size-fits-all, stretchy mesh thongs, and LiviRae Lingerie original Chippey’s Chips. Chippey's Chips are silicone nipple concealers that heat mold to a client's body and require no adhesive. LiviRae Lingerie partners with the Service League of Cherokee, the City of Refuge Women's Shelter, and contributes to I Will Survive wellness kits. Due to a large number of young girls reaching out to them on social media, Decker and Hopkins are interested in starting a program geared toward middle school girls focusing on self confidence. They highly recommend that you visit the boutique for a personalized fitting but if you just absolutely can't, then they have created the "Fit Finder tool" for clients to fit themselves on their newly updated website. So You Wanna be in Pictures? Words Cynthia Fritts Stillwell

here is a flurry of film and television activity happening here in the state of Georgia and especially in Atlanta. We are ranked number three in production behind Los Angeles and New York City. What a joyous time for people who want to get a taste of what’s it like to be in the movies. Consider a career change to become a background artist who provides a rich tapestry for the scenes between the principal players (the actors who are speaking). Without that depth of characters, a scene can become very flat and/or dull. How do you begin the process? Start with an internet search for casting agencies in Atlanta and send a recent photo of yourself (a selfie will work just fine) to those agencies. Include your name, height and weight, your clothing sizes (include shoe size), and your contact information/phone and email address. It is also helpful to include your interests, skills and work experience. Many times, you may be cast because you possess the kind of experience or have a skill that the script calls for in a specific scene. Once you are cast for a specific scene, you will be given a date and general background on the type of scene, the kind of clothing

choices you may need to provide (or if it is a period film that is taking place in another era, you may be asked to come in to fit for a specific outfit for that particular scene). You will be given a location and an approximate time to report (a “call time”). This call time is flexible since many of the next day’s work is dependent on what happens the previous day. Once you get to the set, you will be whisked into the magical world of make believe. Wardrobe, hair and make-up, and props assistants will aide in making that make believe become real. At least for a few hours. You will be working in collaboration with producers, directors, actors, and creative skilled crew members who all have the same goals in mind: create a day of memorable scenes. Tell the story. Make it believable. As you “wrap” (complete) your day of filming, you realize that you have embraced a business that is unique, intense, moment to moment, and fulfilling. Welcome to that life! Cynthia Stillwell Casting is a Georgia-based company with 30 years experience casting principals and background for film, television, commercials and theatre.

MEET Michael I'm a client of Atlanta Dental Spa who had veneers and an implant done at this place. I have nothing but good things to say about Dr. Peter Boulden and Dr. Andrew Currie who transformed a troubled mouth into something I'm very proud of today. It really did change my life and for me... there really isn't a price you can put on that. Before, during and after the reconstruction of my mouth, both doctors would call and text me to make sure I was doing ok. For me, that speaks volumes. I've said it before to their face but I'll say it here again... I can't thank them enough for their time, patience, and willingness to work with me to get the job completed.
