Editor's Letter
Hello, Dunwoody and Sandy Springs!
november 2014 publisher
I
f I had a buck for every time I moved since I met my husband, I’d be rich. Well, just 1 home short of a twenty, anyways. We met in Marblehead, MA (1 home); moved to St. Thomas, USVI (4); to Southampton, England (3); to Hong King (1); back to Marblehead, MA (2); to Ann Arbor, MI () then to Atlanta. Yes, 4. Make that 5 - we move Friday). We’re not vagabonds. But, we’re not afraid of boxes, cleaning out closets, Craigslist sales or address change forms. We like trying different lifestyles and for now, we love being renters. Yes, tenants!
We’ve owned homes on two continents and are thrilled to call someone else when the roof or refrigerator leaks. Not holding our breath as the real estate market dips and climbs gives us more energy for things like watching the sun set and...packing.

What all this mobility has meant for us is priceless. We have friends dotting the globe - and Atlanta neighborhoods. We don’t get bogged down with out-of-style winter coats or chip bowls shaped like football stadiums. We greet the fellows at the Goodwill like long lost friends and regularly purge. It feels so good. Our kids are not pack rats. They enjoy making their rooms their own. Often. They know a house is not a home until we say it is. In this HOME issue, we explore homes with special views and homes with careful interior design. What makes your home so sweet? Look around the table this Thanksgiving and you’ll have your answer. Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy the home you are in this warm holiday season.

Around Town CAC GETS GRANT The Atlanta Community Food Bank has awarded CAC a grant for improvements to the CAC Food Pantry! The grant was made possible through the Food Bank and a matching donation from the Shumard Foundation. The one-time capacity building grant will go toward a small refrigerated truck, additional refrigerators, electrical upgrades and additional shelving. The addition of a truck will allow CAC to pick up large food drives and large quantities of donated fresh foods in one trip. Currently CAC and group donors either borrow or rent trucks, or make multiple trips in personal vehicles. The upgrades and additional equipment will allow the food pantry to increase the total number of pounds of food distributed by 10 percent per year for the next five years! CAC currently distributes an average of 11,000 lbs. of groceries and 24,000 pounds of fresh and prepared foods per month or a total of 35,000 pounds. The pantry currently receives an all-time high of more than 1,400 visits a month, giving food to more 500-900 local families a month.

BeltLine enthusiasts can purchase one of his 1,000 hand-cut, stamped rail slices for $99 at BuildtheBeltLine.org. The proceeds from every purchase will help build the Beltline through funding Atlanta BeltLine programs and projects until the project is complete in 2030. Buckhead residents also benefit from Peachtree Hills’ position at the northern section of the BeltLine.

Dunwoody Chamber Welcomes New President Article Carol Niemi
T
he Dunwoody Chamber of Commerce is pleased to welcome a new president and CEO, Stephanie Snodgrass. As the public face of the Chamber, as well as the top staff member, she will play a key role in both the day-to-day activities of the staff and fulfilling the Board of Director’s vision. The search for the new president took several months. During that time, the search committee, led by Board ViceChair Brent Morris, looked at resumes of many highly qualified candidates and interviewed the eight most qualified. “We were looking for someone who was familiar with chamber standards, best practices and benchmarks and had experience working for a board,” says Morris. “In addition, we were looking for marketing experience and charisma.” For the past seven years, Snodgrass has served as president of the Walker County Chamber of Commerce and Regional Visitors Information Center. When appointed, she was the youngest chamber president in Georgia. She has also served as a member of the boards of the Georgia Northwestern Technical College Adult Education Advisory Committee and Walker County Business Education Alliances Together. She is a graduate of the Georgia Academy for Economic Development’s Leadership Academy, Walker County Sheriff’s Citizens Academy and Adult Leadership Walker County. In addition, she recently completed her first year of Institute of Organization Management. In other words, she was already doing the job. “I was wearing a lot of hats,” says Snodgrass. “She’s a perfect fit for the job,” says

Morris. “She understands how important it is to provide value to our members and knows how to do it.” “She’s exactly what we need to continue moving our Chamber forward,” says Board Chair Paula Owens. “And our members will find her warm, friendly and very enthusiastic.” Another qualification that made Snodgrass a winner with Dunwoody is her collaborative work with neighboring chambers and local governments, much the way the Dunwoody Chamber and Sandy Springs/ Perimeter Chamber collaborate both with each other and their city governments. Snodgrass is responsible for a program called “One Walker,” which brings together cities, governments and government authorities in a collaborative manner. “Through One Walker, I worked with four spread-out cities, one county government, two development authorities, two school systems and the executive board of the Chamber,” she says. “It started with little things, like sharing snow equipment. Now they know one another, and we worked together to pass SPLOST.” In addition to pulling together various Walker County entities, Snodgrass was able to reach across state lines to recruit Chamber members from both Tennessee and Alabama. Likewise, before even starting her Dunwoody Chamber job, she has already spoken with the leaders at
both the Sandy Springs/Perimeter Chamber and the Convention and Visitors Bureau of Dunwoody. “It’s all about collaboration to achieve a shared vision,” says Snodgrass. “People don’t see city lines.” After years of living in a small town in northwest Georgia and traveling on weekends to metro Atlanta to visit friends and enjoy the nightlife and concerts, Snodgrass is looking forward to her new life in Dunwoody. “It has a small-town vibe, but it’s urban,” she says. “People take a lot of pride in their community.” Wow. She sounds like one of us already. Welcome to Dunwoody, Stephanie. Carol Niemi is an award-winning creative director who works with growing companies to define and build their brand. Staying Sassy in Savannah Article and Photography Ruksana Hussain

f you thought the scene in Savannah was all about the river walk in the oldest city in Georgia, you are in for a pleasant surprise. Gone are the days when this was simply a summer beach getaway, with the added bonus of open container laws. A recent revival has seen brand new businesses setting up shop, more restaurants and attractions than ever before, in a city that celebrates its history as much as its future. Livening up the local skyline is San Francisco-based Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants’ latest offering - The Brice. The boutique Rooms at The Brice

hotel is the only Kimpton property in Georgia as the brand expands in the Southeast. The savvy and sassy traveler in you will adore the contemporary, sleek design of this jewel set in the heart of Savannah’s historic district. The building is an adaptive reuse of one of the city’s timeless structures, the Coca-Cola bottling plant originally built in the 1860s. Its eclectic character features larger-than-life horse imagery paying tribute to the livery previously located on the hotel site as well. The 145-room hotel offers guests amenities like yoga mats, free bike rentals and a diverse choice of ready to eat and refrigerated snacks in-room. Tucked in the center of the hotel is the Secret Garden, a private sanctuary, with bar service, of course. For pet-lovers, The Brice welcomes buddies of all breeds, weights and sizes for no additional fees or deposits and on the first Tuesday every month, honors them with a Canines and Cocktails event.
Complimentary coffee and tea for a good four hours each morning is a sure to get you going for the day. The lobby feels like an inviting library with rows of books and newspapers and lends itself well to a daily social hour when guests get a chance to mix and mingle over a glass--or two--of wine in the evening. Appetizers and drinks-to-go are offered up too. Fridays are Bow Tie Fridays, thanks to General Manager Mitch Linder and his slight obsession with this southern statement piece. The Brice is also home to Pacci Kitchen + Bar, a chef-driven Kimpton restaurant and craft cocktail bar. A menu created by locally celebrated Chef Roberto Leoci features sophisticated and soulful Italian cuisine. Try the Fritto Misto with asparagus, flounder and shrimp or the Hunter Ravioli starring beef soaked six hours in red wine. The Coca Cola glazed short ribs pay homage to

Orchestrated by Sherrill Milnes and Maria Zouves, each season serves over 100 artists, 7000 audience members and 45 events. Oh, and if all of this galavanting around gets too tiring then remember to get some ice cream at Savannah mainstay Leopold’s and head to the Milan Day Spa for some TLC in a calm oasis that also doubles as an art gallery, in the midst of the activity that is Broughton Street. iving here in Sandy Springs and Dunwoody, we are blessed with views of lush green (and gold), skylines of glistening growth and yards full of toys and memories. Whether your kitchen window allows you a glimpse of the north Georgia mountains or your very own soccer pitch, this is the stuff of daydreams. Gazing off to the distance, or your own providence, from the warmth of our own home gives us both power and security, reassuring us that home is indeed sweet. Meet the Dodsons, who have been in their Dunwoody Club Forest home (c. 1978) two years. They called in Claire Bell of Chic Abode Interiors to help bring the traditional home to life, keeping the family’s active lifestyle in mind while creating a warm and fresh appeal. The home’s interior was already trimmed with beautiful moulding so Claire and owner Jennifer Dodson decided to feed off these bones, creating a Country French feel with accessories and muted tones. A collection of mercury glass, large clear glass vases and clean accessorizing invite a play of light throughout the young family’s kitchen. A bank of windows in the dining nook provide a view of the expansive back lawn, graded and tended with love by Patrick Dodson, who added a soccer net at one end of the near-pitch size field for their two athletic daughters. The furnished ground-level patio (adjoining the walk-out finished basement) looks out to a hammock, fire pit, trampoline and tire swing set among a grove of mature trees. The screened-in porch off the living room also offers vistas to the lawn and is furnished with sports viewing in mind. The family watched the World Cup games here. The family loves the neighborhood and have renovated their home to take advantage of the views, making the view all about their active lifestyle. November 2014 | PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com

Article Andrea Janise | Photography Brooke Henze
B
rooke Henze put her entrepreneur skills to the test in December of 2013 when she launched Swell Forever, a brand concept that focuses on creating custom heirloom gifts with a personalized twist. Her story leading up to the now successful venture is truly one of inspiration. Henze grew up in Sandy Springs from the age of two years old. After heading off to college and later receiving an M.B.A from Duke University (where she took all of the entrepreneur classes she could find), the motivated graduate came back to the city to settle down and start a family. Taking her mother’s advice, Henze and her husband invested in a 1949 Sandy Springs bungalow in need of renovation. They took on this challenge while Henze was pregnant with her daughter Isla. It was also during this time when Henze took stock in her own dreams and theorized the idea for Swell Forever. “Throughout this time I threw myself into research, trying to figure out where to source materials and vendors, find different ways to print on fabric and have messages stitched in blankets,” Henze reflects. “I put a lot of thought into my brand. Once I pulled all of the pieces together for the business, I launched while in my third trimester of pregnancy. I thought, I’d better get my act together now, because when I have a child, it will be that much harder to do!” Taking guidance from close family members, Henze began to build the Swell Forever brand into what it is today. “My cousin has a company called Swell Caroline–a jewelry business based out of Buckhead,” she says. “She started her company first, and has been a great mentor and inspiration to me. Now, we share resources back and forth.” 20
PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | November 2014
At first, the Swell Forever product lines were still being conceptualized, but Henze was confident in what she envisioned her brand would be. “I wanted to find a way where someone can write something intimate and it be a part of the gift that they are giving, I wanted to make everything in the U.S., and I also wanted to create a way to raise awareness for something social; for me, foster care has always been a passion. For every gift sold, a certain portion of proceeds go towards helping families adopt children in need.” Swell Forever currently has a line of custom designed adult throws, baby blankets and the Forever Dress collection. The luxurious fabric used is specially selected, made in America, and hand stitched in Atlanta. Each gift that Swell Forever produces is meant to help people share their emotions and allows for custom messaging on the tag of the item. “I encourage people to create their own message,” Henze proudly states. “Many people will use Bible verses or something as simple as ‘I will always love you,’ although messages can be up to 150 characters on each tag.” Since each gift is handmade to order, she set the price points to ensure that every gift has a donation to the Swell Forever Adoption Fund, to guarantee that you are making an impact with each gift. After successfully launching her brand, Henze knows that she could not have done it without her strong support system and is grateful for the early experiences she gained in business school. She offers this advice to those taking the entrepreneurial leap: “Get over any fears that someone can do it better than you. Instead of thinking about it, just do it. You learn so quickly when you want to learn.”

Meet Interior Designer Jennifer McKune of Fifth Avenue Solutions Interview Sue G. Collins | Photography Courtesy of Fifth Avenue Solutions
SC: What are today’s trendiest colors and accent pieces? JM: Color is making a comeback! Black, navy and gray supplement white for neutrals and vibrant tones of colors – particularly purple, turquoise and tangerine provide contrast and interest. Careful use of pastels provides additional depth. Rustic wood and animal motifs have been popular for a while, but I’m seeing more metal pieces and geometric motifs make an appearance SC: Where do you find your inspiration? JM: Fashion and home trends domestically and internationally inspire me to create unique spaces that speak to the client. I frequently use Houzz and House & Home Magazine for insight and new ideas. SC: Where locally do you like to shop for your own home? JM: World Market and Home Goods are great for those everyday uses and accents. I also use AmericasMart downtown and boutiques such as The Mercantile in Brookhaven and Nadeau in Peachtree Hills. 22
PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | November 2014
SC: What are three things homeowners should consider when choosing an interior designer? JM: Personality, goals and timeline are three elements that can greatly impact the relationship with your designer. Make sure you can talk freely and agree on a shared vision for the space. Also be sure to discuss expectations of time so that busy schedules or long ordering delays don’t throw a wrench in the project down the line. SC: The holidays are coming. We need some tips! JM: 1. Don’t be afraid to go glam or charmingly simple. Holidays are all about transformation so feel free to create a new type of space that you wouldn’t normally live in. 2. Invest in pieces that overlap seasons – fall leaves and pumpkins can carry you from September to November, while red berries last through February.
3. Vary décor height for a collected, three dimensional feel. Building your holiday look with garlands, figurines and art creates an effect that draws you into the season.

Street Lines: The all-new 2014 Rolls-Royce Wraith Rolls-Royce sports its newest family member in grand fashion Article and Photography Dennis Malcolm Byron
A
fter driving the newest edition from one of the world’s most prestigious automakers throughout the environs of Sea Island, Georgia, the all-new 2014 Rolls-Royce Wraith quickly became the weekend’s phenomenon. The Wraith— Rolls-Royce’s closest interpretation of a “sports” car due its flawless fusion of power, nimble suspension, and elegance—consistently dropped the jaws of onlookers who caught one of the first glimpses of this model in the U.S. Imported this year after the craftsmanship from 60 pairs of hands that literally built this model from the ground up at Rolls-Royce’s state-of-the-art factory in Goodwood, England (the only robot used was to apply the body’s paint), the Wraith is based on the larger bodied Ghost coupe, but with only two rear-hinged doors, more responsive handling, and a significant engine boost at 624 horsepower from its twin-turbocharged, V-12, 48-valve engine to name a few alterations. 26
PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | November 2014
One of the main purposes of this new family addition was not only to provide existing customers with something different from the Phantom and Ghost series; the Wraith also demonstrates Rolls-Royce’s recognition of the burgeoning sector of successful entrepreneurs in their late 30s to 40s. Hence, we have their fastest and most technologically advanced car to date. Standout advancements include the Satellite Aided Transmission which automatically adjusts the car’s ride to approaching road conditions via their GPS and navigation system; and the activation of the Spirit of Ecstasy Rotary Controller for menu options with a mere finger swipe. Interior pampering continues with the striking book-matched Canadel wood paneling (so that the grains perfectly connect like a mirror image); lamb’s wool mats; signature plush leather; and a noiseless cabin (unless drivers want to utilized the theater-rivaling 18-speaker sound system). Arguably the most memorable interior spectacle is the
1,340 hand-weaved fiber optic lights in the ceiling owners can pattern to create their personal, everlasting night’s sky. Ultimately, the all-new Wraith is truly a fabulous automobile and will effortlessly maintain Rolls Royce’s esteemed reputation. Georgia Gives Day is an initiative that has been co-created by the nonprofit sector itself. o those of us who can rattle off the phone number of the first home they lived in, (Willow2-1604) the pull of memory can be powerful and bittersweet. It can shape all our future place wishes, and rarely fades with time. Childhood homes are more than our first stop on this earth. They are where we learn our names, and also who we are. That we are more than just ourselves. We are first part of our family, then our neighborhood, then the community, and hopefully eventually a larger world. My first home was a sturdy ranch in a now aging post-war subdivision. Although it seemed huge and completely familiar to me then, when I drive by it slowly now, it looks like all the other tidy tracts of its era, indistinguishable on its block. Since my first house I have lived in two other homes of my parents, a number of dorm rooms and the sorority house in my college town, six different apartments in Kansas City, and two houses of my own. But nothing has the pull of that first home. In the memory box of that house live the thudding of my brothers roughhousing in the hallway, the smell of my mother’s fresh baked bread, and the taste of the strawberries that escaped under the chain length fence of the sweet elderly neighbors to the rear of us. I can hear my dad whistling his way home in the garage, and the dog’s toenails scratching let me in from the backyard. Although I spent less than 10 years in that house, they were important ones, and they linger long in who I am.

PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | November 2014
My husband and I moved into our current house three months before our daughter was born. (By the way, visibly pregnant is a great time to move – no one expects you to do anything remotely strenuous.) Although the current plan is to plant the for sale sign as the U-Haul pulls away for college, by then she will have spent her entire childhood in this house. Before I am ready, she will leave this room she made hers at three days old. Its walls have made the paint progression from baby girl pink through tween green to young lady lavender. Here is the hallway where she took her first steps, the bedroom door she slammed with all her 13-year-old fury, and the kitchen counters she no longer needs a stool to reach when we make Christmas cookies. Outside is the rainy sidewalk where she broke her arm on a treacherous two-wheeler since corralled in the shed. The trees she climbed, the playhouse now overgrown with weeds, the block she took long thoughtful walks around. And here the front porch light, under which she may eventually kiss a boy. Wherever we are, she will always have a home, of course. I know my independent girl will make her own lovely world around her. But I am glad we will have given her what my parents gave me. Wherever she lives, she will take with her the memory of home, to be opened over and over again like a gift that never fails to surprise and cheer. Ribbons of memory will wrap her with us, sometimes triggered by nothing more than a never to be forgotten phone number.
