ho doesn’t love their pet? Pets comfort, entertain and validate us. Cats, dogs, birds, hens, fish and gerbils have important places in homes all over Perimeter North and we love and adore them. Dogs now have their own parks, with high-end boutiques dedicated to their every need and canine desire. As well they should! So, why not provide your pup with an outdoor adventure this month? We asked our friends at Mountain High Outfitters to suggest some cool hikes for you and your dog, not too far from home. Check out their ideas on page 22. And, if you need to leave your dog in good hands during the day while you work, read up on pet daycare guidelines on page 18. In this, our first Pets and Kids issue (an editorial theme suggested by one of our readers), we are thrilled to bring you first-hand stories from our writer, Valerie Reed, who has 5-month old twins rocking next to her desk. Read her tales and tips on pages 12 and 20. Enjoy the cooler weather with the pets and children in your life!

urviving parenthood also means surviving the millions of items that are out there to buy for your children. As parents we are always looking for the next greatest product to solve an issue or bring happiness to our children, and every company will try to get you to believe you need everything they make. After talking with countless new parents and trying each product out with my own newborns, these are the items that seem to top our list for the newborn and infant stage of life.

BrightStarts Playtime to Bedtime Rocking Sleeper

This seat is perfect for newborns thanks to its extra deep cradle that helps them feel secure and safe. Kidsii.com Boon Grass Countertop Drying Rack

With bottles and pacifiers that need constant washing, it’s nice to have something on your countertop that is visually appealing to hold it all. The flexible grass allows for items of all shapes and sizes to fit easily, as the water drains into the tray below, completely contained. No more unsightly drying racks taking up your countertop. BoonInc.com Swaddle Me Velcro Blankets

less and stay asleep longer. The Velcro closure helps the blanket stay in place as baby moves while sleeping. No more sneaking an arm out to wake them during the night! SummerInfant.com Marpac Dohm Sound Conditioner

This is the sound machine for the serious sleeper. With the flip of one switch it creates the soothing sound of rushing air, also known as “white noise,” which has been proven to effectively block noises at a broad range of frequencies. A uniform blanket of smooth sound masks disruptive noises. No timers to shut off and wake baby up, or no series of noises to choose from, just the perfectly toned white noise to help get your baby to sleep and keep them there. Marpac.com Baby Bjorn

Baby-wearing is a great way to bond with your baby, and sometimes the only way to keep your baby happy while having a free hand to do anything else. While there are many brands of baby carriers out there, Baby Bjorn is a classic and trusted name in the industry. With products to fit every style and need, not to mention color and fabric preference, they have a carrier to fit every parent and baby. All of their baby carriers are safe and ergonomic for your baby and can all be used from birth. BabyBjorn.com While you could consume your time and energy with research and trying out products, take a breath and relax, use what works for you and spend your time enjoying your little one. Before you know it they’ll be on to the next age group of toys and goods and you can start all over!

lena Dollinger, a Davis Academy sixth grader, steps out to sing “Let’s Go to the Movies” in Annie Jr. at the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta (MJCCA). Elena is confident and self-assured; this is her third stage production at the MJCCA. “I remember the first time I was on this stage. I had heard about the upcoming JCC show, Fiddler On The Roof, from a girl in my class. It sounded like fun, so I auditioned,” she says. Elena landed the role of the youngest daughter in Fiddler. That’s where it all started. Her love of theatre, acting and performing has only grown from there. MJCCA Director of Arts & Culture Brian Kimmel explains how their program works. “The MJCCA’s Arts & Culture department offers music and theatre classes for children, teens, and adults. Youth performance classes, theatre workshops, and a variety of after-school theatre classes are offered year-round,” says Kimmel. “Students meet regularly to develop and improve their theatrical and musical skills, and gain experience, while learning self-confidence through the world of live performance.” Elena’s mother, Kim Dollinger, sings the programs praises. “My daughter loves the MJCCA the14

atre programs so much,” she says. “They have become one of her true passions. And she has developed so much over the years. From roles in children’s shows like Maisy and Seussical Jr., to singing more adult songs in the MJCCA;s Drama Camp Broadway Revue of Thoroughly Modern Millie – these programs have taught Elena how to perform with actors of any age, and in any show. It has made her adaptable, which we feel is a true life skill.” And Elena is not the only MJCCA performing arts success story. Noa Young, an Epstein School fourth grader, started attending the MJCCA’s summer drama camp two years ago. She loved it and couldn’t wait for the summer camp performances. “While attending camp, Noa learned that she could act and perform yearround,” Michelle Young, Noa’s mother explains. “Now she takes classes at the MJCCA twice a week, and takes such pride in the lead roles that she has earned in Annie and You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown. Meeting twice a week during the school year can be a challenge for our busy schedule, but we can clearly see that this is a program that has allowed Noa to gain self-confidence, grow, be happy, and

be a part of a like-minded group of kids. We are hooked!” Noa agrees. “I love doing plays here. The teachers are great, and it is fun getting to know the other kids in the cast,” says Noa. “I was a little scared at first to be on the stage, but now I love being in the spotlight. During class, I learned about reading and memorizing a script, ‘blocking,’ dancing, and lots of other cool stuff. One of my favorite things is when we do voice exercises and say ‘My mommy made me mash my m ’n m’s, oh my!’” Kimmel says the program enriches the lives of students. “Through the MJCCA arts education program, students like Elena and Noa begin a journey toward a lifelong love of performance,” says Kimmel. “As part of our program they are able to hone their skills with Atlanta area theater professionals, and work with their peers in a collaborative environment while ultimately working toward a common goal. Our students gain a sense of self confidence that is priceless.” For more information about the MJCCA’s performing arts programs, call 678.812.4000 or visit AtlantaJCC.org.

Pet Day Care Is It For You and Your Pet?

Article Kelli Harvey, Angels Among Us Pet Rescue

W

hile our pets would be perfectly content spending every moment of the day and night with us, and the thought of lounging around all day in our PJ’s with them does sound appealing, the reality is the bills don’t pay themselves. For most pet owners this means that we will inevitably be separated from our furry family members for longer than we would both prefer! If you find yourself far from Fido for extended periods, consider the following Q&A as a starting guide on how to make the separation more comfortable for you both: How many hours is the maximum a dog should be left alone inside an apartment or home?

The amount of time a dog should be left alone depends on several factors such as age, amount of training and activity level. Puppies require a greater level attention and should not be left alone for more than a few hours at a time; whereas older, trained dogs can be left for longer periods of time. Consider hiring a trusted dog walker or enrolling your pup in doggy daycare and be sure your pet has access to plenty of fresh water and food while you’re away. How important is socialization for a dog?

Anyone who has loved a dog as a member of their family and has 18

PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | October 2014

experienced the unconditional admiration and desire to please from their beloved pet, knows just how socially-dependent dogs can be. They thrive on attention from humans and often become constant companions no matter where our days and weekends may take us. Socialization in puppies allows them to become comfortable in human society and typically results in a more relaxed, safer and generally happier adult dog. While it is preferred for dogs to be socialized earlier in life, adult dogs who might not have had an opportunity to experience a variety of situations as puppies can benefit from socialization, too. The most important item to remember about socializing any dog is to be sure you understand and have thoroughly researched your pet’s behavior. An understanding of your pet’s body language will ensure you are able to recognize and properly respond to their non-verbal cues. What should you look for in a pet day care?

Check online for ratings and ask around to see which locations your friends and neighbors recommend. It is important to visit the facility (bring your pup along as well). Allowing your dog to sniff out the surroundings and meet the staff helps to familiarize the area while giving you an opportunity to see where your dog is staying, and what the conditions are like. Check with the

kennel on any guidelines they may have for what you can bring for your pet. Pack familiar toys and other items for your pup to play with, be sure to include something that smells like you to provide comfort. Confirm that your pet is up to date on all vaccines and pack any necessary medications. Don’t forget to pack your dog’s food and personal food dishes to add familiarity. Leave some of your dog’s favorite treats with the kennel staff. To avoid

creating unnecessary anxiousness and future separation anxiety with your pet, try to keep a calm and happy demeanor when dropping them off and picking up. Be sure to ask about your pet’s stay when picking them up. Knowing what type of behavior your pet displayed or if any special handling was required is important should you move or use the services of another day care in the future. Marea White at Fido Fido

This just in from pet-lovers at Fido Fido! What counts? 1. Employee Training and Experience. Caring for groups of dogs, especially off-leash takes specific skills and know-how, such as understanding pack behavior and dog psychology to prevent injuries and to ensure the dogs have a safe and fun time. Additionally, are the employees career pet professionals vs. seasonal or temporary? The quality of care can be noticeably different between a dog lover who has made caring for pets his career vs. someone who is holding a temporary, part-time job. 2. Understand the Daycare Schedule. When you take your dog to daycare, you generally have one of three main objectives: To provide your energetic dog with physical and mental stimulation through group play, to provide your older dog with companionship and care while you are away or to get your destructive or overly yappy dog out of the house while you are away. All daycares have different amounts of time the dogs are in their rooms vs. involved in monitored play or interaction with staff members. You want to choose a daycare that will provide your dog the amount of playtime, attention and rest best suited for him.

3. Customer Service. This is such an overly used concept that it has lost its punch as a result. However, it cannot be stressed enough that in a service business such as pet care, the responsiveness of the staff and its leadership to its clients when things are going right, as well as when things have gone wrong is extremely important. What’s New? Fall is a great time to hike with your dog. Ask your vet about The Pets RXercise Program. It is an innovative partnership between The Georgia Veterinary Medical Association and the Georgia State Parks that allows vets to write an “exercise” prescription that serves as a free pass (for the family and pet) into one of Georgia’s 62 State Parks, a $5 value! This fall, Fido Fido will be sponsoring several group hikes that involve clients and their dogs as well as offering this service to clients whose dogs are in our care. very newborn baby is beautiful and perfect, and like many new parents, I wanted to capture that perfection I saw in my newborn twin boys. I didn’t want just any photographer, I wanted someone who would also see the wonder I saw in my children and would take their time to capture that on film, memories that I could hold forever. Like a lot of moms-to-be, I spent much of my free time researching everything from the safest car seats to the best chemical-free bath soaps, but I also spent hours researching local newborn photographers. I looked at gallery after gallery comparing styles and samples. I probably saw a photo of every baby born in Atlanta in the past five years. When I came upon Saldivia-Jones Photography Boutique and I knew I had found that something special I was looking for. I contacted the studio to get information on pricing and packages and found their process is much more than your standard photo package. Saldivia-Jones Photography Boutique is a labor of love founded by Lena Saldivia and Stephen Jones (pictured right). 20

PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | October 2014

With a passion for photography and people, they’ve created a process that is more than just “show up, pose, click and done.” Their process consists of a consultation, the photography session, a preview session and the portrait installation. When I arrived I was greeted by Lena and Stephen, two of the warmest and friendliest people I’ve ever met. I was immediately at home and our conversation just started to flow. I told them about the twin boys I was expecting and my hopes for their newborn photos. They showed me samples of styles, poses, props and encouraged me to present ideas of my own. By the time we finished we had a plan. I left that day not only excited about the plans we had made, but also at ease that one more thing had been checked off my to-do list. Six days after my twins were born, I took them to the Saldivia-Jones studio for our session. Being a first-time parent and having two very new babies, I was nervous about them being handled and maneuvered, but as soon as Lena took hold of my boys all my concerns vanished. She held my boys in such a gentle and loving

way, as if they were her own. She worked her magic, gently holding them in each position until they relaxed. Then Stephen quickly and quietly went to work, taking each shot before the babies lost their perfect positioning. Somehow making sure the angles, lighting, etc. were all perfect with just seconds to work with. The whole session was done in such a calm and gentle manner that my newborn babies never even seemed to notice what was going on around them.

A few weeks after our session my husband and I went back to the studio for our preview session. Lena and Stephen not only captured each boys physical characteristics, but their interactions and little bits of their personalities that were starting to show through. We gushed over each photo, loving each one more than the last. Within weeks Stephen was at our home installing the beautiful framed artwork that featured our boys. The arrangement on our living room wall was

perfect (below), thanks to the renderings they had completed ahead of time. It’s hard to believe that my babies aren’t that little anymore and while I miss their snuggly newborn perfection I am so thankful that I have these photos that captured that time so well that I can relive it anytime I want. ith beautiful fall colors beckoning and cooler air (finally) welcoming us outdoors, October is a grand month to grab your gear, your kids and your dog and hit the trail. Any trail! By the time you’ve packed the car and finished your smoothie and power bar en route, you can find your feet on a quiet looping wooded trail. Our friends at Mountain High Outfitters have recommended a few hikes for people and pups and created a packing list to keep you comfortable, safe and inspired. 1. East Palisades Trail - The near 4-mile trail follows the Chattachoochee River with a thicket of bamboo towering the trail. It’s an easy hike, just down the river from Ray’s. More information at the Chattachoochee National Recreation Area site. 22

PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | October 2014

2. Jones Bridge - This 5-mile trail provides abundant wildlife, hills, natural obstacles all along beautiful riverside trails. Completely dog friendly (leash required). Hop on at the second parking area off Barnwell Road. As with all these hikes through local parks, leave the beer at home and take lots of water. 3. Panther Creek - Great hot spot outside the city, lush and serene for both two- and four-legged friends. Great waterfall to cool off your furry friend along a 7-mile hike. Plan on around three hours for this trek, plus travel time (worth the planning), along Old Highway 441 to Panther Creek State Park. You’ll enjoy some elevation change, on this more challenging trail. Go for it! Every dog needs good gear. Toys, packs, cool collars, bowls, bungy leashes and life jackets from Mountain High Outfitters.

4. Kennesaw Mountain - Great options for trail and road, especially if dogs have paw pad sensitivity. Great natural obstacles on easy and difficult trails. Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield National Park offers up some 3,000 acres with history galore. 5. Big Creek Greenway - We like this greenway because it stretches 13.5 miles with future extension plans without trail interruptions that you’ll find on the Silver Comet. Very pet friendly from casual walkers, runners to roller bladers and other fitness enthusiasts. Check the thorough website for parking places, trail lengths and trail conditions. There’s no excuse now! Hang Ten

If you’re interested in trying stand-up paddle boarding, Mountain High Outfitters can help with board rentals, advice and excursion suggestions. Try a “SUP” if you want to work on your core and don’t worry about falling into the water. You probably won’t after you get vertical your first time out. It can be meditative and exhilarating, depending on water conditions. We like Stone Mountain Park (great for big loops and nice points of interest) or Chattahoochee River at Azalea Park (great for long stretches to paddle, just dodge the shoals). You’ll want hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and water bottle. If your board has bungee straps you can carry a cooler with water and snacks (I like frozen grapes, KIND bars, almonds and chilled roast sweet potato chunks). Some people use a waterproof case for their phone and pipe their tunes thru a bluetooth speaker that’s mounted to the SUP. A GoPro cam is a terrific idea to capture the day’s adventure. A good SUP time on the water can be anywhere from 1-3 hours. The folks at Mountain High believe in conserving outdoor resources and work hard to support conservation, environmental stewardship and consumer responsibility. Their outreach programs include regular free Boy Scout clinics, Rock Climbing classes, sponsorship and support of hundreds of local events. 2014 Scion FR-S Code Red

Article Dennis Malcolm Byron | Photography Provided by Scion

W

hile there are numerous 2-door exotic sports cars in magazines that have both teens and adults drooling, the outrageous price tags quickly bring them to reality. Well the new Scion FR-S is a fun, beautifully designed automobile that can scratch that itch for a fraction of the price. Scion—the automaker geared to be the perfect fit for students in the 20-somethings, hipsters and value hunters who still want attractive four-wheeled transportation—does an impressive job with their sleek coupe dressed in “Firestorm” red, with chrome-tipped exhaust and projector-beam halogen headlamps. While the FR-S comes equipped with a 2.0 4-cylinder Boxer DOHC 16-valve engine powered by 200 horses, and 17-inch alloy wheels, it’s the operation by the seemingly endangered 6-speed manual transmission in the auto world that fulfills the need for an aggressive, invigorating racing experience. (There is an automatic version as well.) Rest assured, if the FR-S was fitting that need for speed, extensive safety features provide a necessary balance. This auto boasts a Star Trac Safety System; front, seat and side curtain airbags; a tire pressure monitoring system; and an overall five-star safety rating when combining top scores in frontal, side and rollover crash protection. Inside, passengers are greeted with a major upgrade in sound—a booming 300-watt Pioneer CD/HD radio complete with an auxiliary/USB port, hands-free phone capability, Bluetooth technology, and a 6.1-inch touch screen to manage everything at the fingertip. The leather trimmed steering wheel, black cloth racing-style seats with red-stitched piping, aluminum sport pedals, remote keyless 26

entry, and a one-piece folding rear seat for extra storage space, collectively enhance its sex appeal. Considering its numerous features, the striking exterior, top safety ratings, and decent gas mileage (25 miles combined city and highway), the 2014 Scion FR-S $24,709 price tag makes it a steal. Say goodbye to exotic sports car envy. The Basics: MSRP: $24,700 (plus $515 delivery, processing, and handling); $26,570 for automatic transmission MPG: 22 city/30 highway, 25 combined For more information, visit Scion.com

Things I Know For Sure Words Valerie Reed

F

our months ago my husband and I welcomed twin boys. They are our first children. Or as my husband says “they are our first, second and last.” Everyone always laughs at that response, but for some reason I don’t think he’s kidding. Having survived the first four months of being a mother, make that a mother of twins, I am reminded daily that I have so much to learn, but there are a few things I know for sure. 1. I never knew what tired was before. I’ve survived all-nighters in college, I’ve raced in triathlons, but nothing came close to preparing me for how tired these two little people could make me. I can’t even put in to words how exhausted I was the first month. Each month it seems to get a little better. I’ve been warned that this doesn’t really improve until they go away to college. 2. People really weren’t kidding when they said we’d find spit-up everywhere. My husband and I bought a new house 6 months before our boys were born. We had plans for new furniture, but everyone warned us against it. Now we are glad we listened. We find stains in the oddest places, and have no idea how they got there. I‘ve been warned that this also doesn’t improve until they go away to college. 3. I can get more done in an hour now than I could get done all day before I had kids. It’s amazing how much you can make yourself

do when the babies are asleep and you have no idea if they’ll sleep for 10 minutes or 2 hours. It becomes a challenge to see how much you can do before you lose that “free time.” 4. Diapers are best bought in bulk. Thank goodness for Amazon. There is nothing like hearing the thud of a box at your front door and knowing that a huge box of diapers has arrived. It means you are saved from a late night run to the closest grocery store when you forgot you were almost out. 5. I never knew how a simple smile could make my day. There is nothing like the smile of one of my babies to give even the hardest day have a silver lining. People used to tell me that this would be the case, but you can’t imagine it until you experience it with a baby of your own. The first four months of motherhood have been challenging, exhausting, exciting and the most rewarding months of my life. However, if you see me out and my shoes don’t match or I don’t have on any makeup, please take pity. I may have survived the first four months, but we are still taking it one day at a time. I’ve been warned at this also doesn’t improve until they go away to college.
