Editor’s Letter

Third time’s a charm. I

hope this note finds you well and enjoying the final months of summer as it slowly comes to a close here in these beautiful river cities we call home. We’ve put together another great issue that you will love and are continuously working to improve the magazine with each and every issue that is published, or as the Chinese and Japanese would say, “Kaizen!”

I’m thrilled to welcome you to the third issue of Point & Plover Lifestyle. You’ll notice we’ve added some different sections since or first issue. We’ll be interchanging departments from time-totime to keep the content interesting, fun and exciting for readers. We’ve included the “Parent’s Corner” department in this issue for the very first time. If there is a specific section that you’d love to see in every issue, please let us know! So, what’s on the horizon for upcoming issues? We’d like to include a “History 101” section that will highlight the rich history of our local communities, which is something we are working diligently on. If you have an interesting story to share, from a historical perspective, please do get in touch.

Around Town WIST, OKRAYS’ PLOVER FARMS PARTNER ON ‘PH’ARMING GRAPES University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point researchers are working with a Portage County farm on an economic development project that could expand the farm to a “pharm.” Knowing Dick Okray was forward-thinking and interested in growing crops other than potatoes, Paul Fowler, executive director of Wisconsin Institute for Sustainable Technology at UW-Stevens Point, approached him about the possibility of growing cold-tolerant grapes in central Wisconsin. The interest was not in making jelly or wine, but in extracting an antioxidant used in health supplements. Resveratrol is a natural ingredient increasingly used in hand and face creams, as a food additive and to combat diseases associated with aging, such as arthritis. Most resveratrol comes from China, and quality is variable, Fowler says. “With homegrown products, we have good quality assurance and control.” “In this instance we’re doing farming with a “ph” instead of an “f,” Okray says. Using natural products with health benefits is known as the nutraceutical industry. The initial planting occurred in June 2014. They’ll soon be growing eight varieties on about two acres along Highway 54 south of Stevens Point as part of Plover Farms, LLC.

COMMUNITY COLLECTS $10,000 IN DIAPERS AND DONATIONS FOR UNITED WAY EFFORT As part of its third annual No Child’s Wet Behind Community Diaper Drive, United Way of Portage County collected more than $10,000 in diaper and monetary donations to help fill a need in the community. Individuals, businesses, churches, and service clubs participated in the diaper drive throughout the month-long effort, says Laura Pfeil, United Way of Portage County Community Initiatives Associate. The $10,637.06 donation total includes a $2,000 matching grant from the Women’s Fund of Portage County, a $2,000 grant from Faith Lutheran Church in Rosholt, and through larger drives at Sentry Insurance, AIG Travel Guard, and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Plover. Although the diaper drive is over, monetary donations can still be dropped off at or sent to United Way of Portage County, c/o No Child's Wet Behind Community Diaper Drive, 1100 Centerpoint Dr., #302, Stevens Point, WI 54481. COLLEGE BASS FISHING TOURNAMENT JULY 9-11 A CATCH FOR UW-STEVENS POINT, REGION Eighty-five collegiate bass fishing teams from across the country converged on Lake DuBay July 9-11 for the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship. The competition is based on the combined weight of the best five fish caught by a two-person team during two days, says Connor Graham, president of the Big Dawgs Fishing Club at UW-Stevens Point. An average bass weighs one to three pounds, with some topping four or five pounds. 12

Point & Plover Lifestyle | August 2015

The Big Dawgs Fishing Club has been lined up volunteers for weigh-ins, transportation of ESPNU network and Bassmaster photographers, lined up boat owners to follow them on Lake DuBay and assist with the vendor displays, Graham says. “These are the best young anglers in world,” he says. Vendors that attended displayed fishing lures, bait, tackle and motors. Among sponsors participating were Carhartt, Toyota, Yamaha, Skeeter and Mercury Marine. Fifty teams stayed in residence halls on campus, said Holly Bleser, summer conference coordinator at UW-Stevens Point. Teams will took off at 6 a.m. from the Tiki Beach Bar and Grill in Mosinee. Bassmaster.com covered the event with live reports from the lake, live-streamed weigh-ins, photos and stories. For more information on the event, visit StevensPointArea.com.

CWSO ANNOUNCES STAFF CHANGE The Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra announces the appointment of Nicole Huntington as administrative assistant. Nicole’s experience as a volunteer in her community, as well as her role of co-owner and operations director of the former ‘That Computer Guy, LLC’ is of great value to the CWSO where she will be responsible for office administration and financial coordination. She holds an Associate Degree from Rochester [MN] Community College and is a graduate of the Mayo School of Health Related Sciences. As the mother of two children who are active in their school music programs, Nicole states, “My new role with the symphony has made me realize the value of a strong music education program in the schools.” The CWSO’s mission is “to enrich, engage, and educate through the power and performance of live music.” The CWSO is affiliated with the College of Fine Arts & Communication at UW-Stevens Point and is located in the Stevens Point Parks and Recreation’s Scarabocchio Art Museum.

Star Student

Gabrielle Diekelman: A Young Girl’s Passion ARTICLE ANDREW BREITENSTEIN

T

he interests and passions of a young student help them define themselves as an individual. For eighth grader Gabrielle Diekelman of Ben Franklin Jr. High School, the interest and passion is art. “Art makes you think, be creative and allows you to use a different part of your mind,” Gabrielle explains. Starting at a young age, Gabrielle drew pictures during her free time whenever she had the chance. She would start a small competition with her brothers to push herself to draw better than they could. “Art gives me a different way of expressing myself.” One of Gabrielle’s other interests is her love for playing the piano. She was able to combine her interests of piano and art to construct a project that helped capture those passions. A favorite piece of hers that she entitled “Keys to Happiness” was done with oil pastels. The work was a 2D project that Gabrielle created for school. Her task was to use a pop-out color. In the painting she replaced the white keys and switched the color to blue and green to create the popout effect. “I like the look of it. Both piano and art makes me happy,” she says. Gabrielle was able take her inspirations and interests to produce a piece of art that was later entered into an art show. Gabrielle is inspired by her family and teachers who helped guide her to where she is today. “These inspirations helped me get new ideas,” she says. A student that enjoys school for the reasons of learning new things, Gabrielle enjoys being with friends and the ability to work with staff on her endeavors. In the recent school year, Gabrielle received The Scarabocchio Award that is given to one eighth grader at Ben Franklin Jr. High for outstanding art work. “I was very excited that I was able to earn the award," she says. "It helped me understand that I am getting better.” Gabrielle enjoys many forms of art and currently likes working with oil pastels. She also works with clay, paint and has recently been introduced to jewelry during which she was able to work with copper. Since the recent introduction to the art of jewelry, Gabrielle has decided that she would like to further her education when she gets to high school. She plans to do more with 3D pieces such as ceramics and jewelry. Gabrielle not only works on art throughout the school year but throughout the summer as well. Every couple of weeks she starts on a new project. “While working on art I get lost in time because I enjoy doing it, not because I have to,” she says.

Artist’s Palette

A Collective of Artists, Gallery Q ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY KRIS RUED-CLARK

A

n artists' cooperative, Q Gallery is located in a historic building and has been a welcome addition to downtown Stevens Point, exhibiting and selling the artwork of local and regional artists. The artist-members collectively show and sell their work, with approximately 25 to 30 artists at any given time. “It's a relaxing and inspiring place to visit and browse as well as a quality source of one of a kind, locally made artworks available to purchase for yourself, your home, or for gift-giving,” notes Mary Lee Reineking, who has been a member for three years. A member since the gallery opened in 2009, Kristie Cecil joined because she had just retired and wanted to devote her time and energy to her work and having a place to display it. “I also was interested in being with other artists and learning from them,” she says. Besides staffing the Gallery, the members also do a complete rehanging of the exhibit space every two months or so to give the individual members an opportunity to have their work featured in a show as well as to assure a fresh look for the entire gallery. The featured exhibit from July 7 through September 4 is "Haunts" with drawings by Alexander Landerman. This will be followed in September and October with a printmaking invitational show featuring the work of Justine Pawelski and other printmakers who have been invited to join her. For each featured exhibit there is an artist's reception that is open to the public. More recently, Q artists have begun to offer art classes/work16

shops. Two upcoming workshops this fall include John Hartman on the topic of photography and Kristie Cecil on color mixing in plein air with oils. “I started offering plein air workshops, painting outdoors, last fall,” says Kristie. “I have taught two workshops with another scheduled for September 16, 17 and 18, 2015. I started with two-day workshops and moved to three days so that we could accomplish more in our time together. I have been very pleased with the response to my workshops.” Twice Q has held Verse and Visions, a collaborative effort between Q artists and poets statewide in which artwork was created with selected poems as inspiration. Last year and this, Art Bloom @ the Q has been a collaboration between Q artists and Master Gardeners during the annual Garden Parade in which floral arrangements were created, inspired by a piece of art, and displayed during the weekend of the Garden Parade. “Q has many loyal customers, but it would be wonderful if a broader segment of the community considered buying handcrafted artwork to decorate, to gift, and to simply treasure,” adds Mary Lee.

You have to experience the difference to believe it.

emember that vacation trip you took to the Bahamas last year? Wouldn’t it have been nice to bring a bit of the island beauty back home with you? You’re in luck! Alchemy Concrete, Inc. of Nelsonville, owned and operated by Judah Haas, can transform your backyard into a blissful paradise. “We are passionate about the creative process. It is so satisfying to create beautiful spaces that families and individuals can make memories in,” says Haas, who graduated from Stevens Point Area High School (SPASH) and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP). He has been in the concrete business for nearly 15 years. The business name is based on an alchemy stone that one of his first customers game when he finished her project. “As we were trying to figure out our name for our new venture I was sitting at my computer on the State website reviewing names that were available and I noticed the stone sitting there. It was meant to be," he explains. " Alchemy is truly an amazing process." Alchemy officially launched in 2004 with three partners but is now owned exclusively by Haas. The business has a subsidiary entitled Judah Studios which sells local artisan products such as paintings, furniture, pottery and workshops in various crafts. “The power and process of change: turning common materials into something beautiful. Sand, water, aggregate, and cement when mixed together creates this beautiful patio or walkway," says Haas. "It gives a strong foundation to your building or gives you a piece of furniture for your living room. It is so common but so unique. So simple, but so elegant. It can stand out or blend in; functional art. We are striving to be alchemists creating products and environments that can propel positive change and create beauty in people’s lives." He employs 10 people full time and 10 people seasonally. Alchemy is a distinctive business. “We truly are passionate about what we do," Haas says. "We want to create a space for our clients that is unique and personalize. We are on the cutting edge of what we do.”

The business offers a variety of services. According the company website their offerings include custom countertops, stamped and textured concrete, stained concrete, pervious concrete, patios, walkways, polished floors, and decorative elements like planters and water features.

"We are striving to be alchemists by creating products and environments that can propel positive change and create beauty in people’s lives." Alchemy is a member of the Golden Sands Home Builders Association, Wisconsin Builders Association, and the National Association of Home Builders, to name a few. In 2012, they won the Artistry in Decorative Concrete award at the international World of Concrete event. 18

or as long has he can remember Russ Ehlinger has dreamed of owning his own business. Over the years, as he and his wife, April, looked at properties, she always said, “No.” Then, their realtor called with a “perfect spot.” As Russ recalls, “It was a dump.” Yet April took one look and said, “This is it.” They purchased the building in Plover on December 30, 2013, and spent the next year and a half gutting and rebuilding, opening the doors on June 1, 2015. The result is an airy, light-filled space with a vaulted ceiling, comfortable seating, and patio seating outdoors. The business focus is the three Cs of coffee, community and connection. “I want to help people with their personal missions in life, whether financial, health, fitness, real estate, investment or other areas,” says Russ. He links professionals with interested listeners through Coffee Chats, held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7-8 p.m. “It’s free to come, and you can kick back in a non-threatening environment and connect. It’s relaxed and inspirational,” explains Russ. He confesses that the Coffee Chats have been poorly attended, but he hopes that as word gets out about his mission to educate and inspire others, they will come. Having worked as a sales consultant for Cintas Uniforms for 10 years, Russ understands the value of customer service. “I truly believe we have the best quality products and the best service.” The customer loyalty program rewards customers with a $5 credit for every $50 spent. “I don’t think any other ice cream place or coffee shop has a drive thru window like we do.” The property was formerly a bank. In addition to coffees, coffee drinks and teas, there are sweet treats and ice cream, in scoops or waffle cones, from Madison’s Chocolate Shoppe Madison. Twelve flavors include such unusual offerings as Door County cherry, Superman, and iced latte-dal, plus two non-dairy options: raspberry nebula soy and carrot mango Italian ice. Director of Coffee (Manager) Ben Hall helped create a menu, create drink recipes, and trained the staff of eight employees. Business is steadily growing. “We have regular clients who come in every day and make us their destination. That gives me a lot of hope for the future,” says Ben. “We’ve got regular coffee people in the mornings and others who come in for ice cream quite often.” Ben most enjoys the fun nature of the work. "I’ve had extensive background in coffee," he says. "We assembled a really good set of employees. They were not experienced, but they came in with great attitudes. I enjoy being able to give somebody something awesome, and they tell me that’s the MISSION COFFEE HOUSE best drink they ever had. I love making 2860 Post Road, Plover people’s day with good drinks.” Monday – Friday For Russ, the best part is helping 6 a.m. – 9 p.m. others fulfill their own personal misSaturday 8 a.m. – 9 p.m. sions in life. t’s easy to feel inspired the minute you walk into Clay Corner Studio in downtown Stevens Point. With bright colors, ceramics, canvas and paints at every turn, the toughest decision is what do first. "You don’t need a reservation to get creative at the art studio," says Manager Milo Pranke. “Just walk in and paint something. It’s a great way to start the day. We have a friendly atmosphere and a lot to choose from. There are always new things so it can be a new experience even if you have been here several times before.” The most popular items at the studio are the ceramics to paint, including small figurines, mugs, bowls, plates, large platters and cookie jars. Beginners can look like experts by using special techniques and glazes that add different patterns and finishes. If you need help with a design or drawing, Clay Corner Studio staff can print one from the Internet and help you transfer it to a ceramic piece or canvas. Once the ceramic pieces are painted, the items can be picked up six days later after being coated and fired in a kiln to become food and dishwasher safe. The rotation of pieces keeps the kilns running every day. Guests may also create various glass bowls, vases and platters that are ready to take home after a week. These items go through the slumping process, in which glass is placed into a specific mold and fired. If guests are just visiting from out of town for the day, several projects can be completed in a short amount of time.

Painted canvases and wine glasses, glass jewelry and night light kits can be competed in one day. There is even art for the youngest of visitors. Parents may bring in their newborns for a free footprint tile that they can design and decorate themselves with the help of a staff member. Clay Corner Studio does offer reserved spots for regular classes, private parties, ladies night activities and pottery wheel workshops. Groups of four or more can book the back room for special events and gatherings for scouts, youth groups and other organizations. A canvas painting night is held every Thursday night. McKenzie Noeldner of Marshfield recently attended one for the first time. “This is a lot easier than I thought it would be,” she says. McKenzie created a colorful skyline painting during her class. “It’s very relaxing. Art was my childhood passion, so it’s fun to get back into it.” Special classes are being offered all summer long, weekdays from 1-3 p.m. Each day offers a different project and price. The week of August 9-14 will be dedicated to creating items featuring the minions of “Despicable Me” fame, from mugs to a chip and dip set. August 24-28 will feature different glass creations. Mark and Martina Strehlow opened the first Clay Corner Studio in Wausau in 2007 and expanded into Stevens Point in 2011. Originally from the Fox Valley, the couple settled in Wausau in 2000. While neither have degrees in art, they have attended numerous classes and conventions on art and business topics. Mark teaches pottery wheel classes. “One of the things I most enjoy is the happiness that painting pottery and creating art brings to people and how excited they are when they see their finished pieces,” says Martina. “Many people refer to it as their cheap therapy session.” 1. Mandi and Cole Chariton of Wisconsin Rapids brought their daughter, Xenia, in to get a free footprint tile with the help of Manager Milo Pranke. 2. A sampling of canvas paintings cover a wall at Clay Corner Studio. 3. A sampling of ceramic pieces to paint 4. Milo Pranke stands behind the counter at the colorful Clay Corner Studio.

THE 2ND ANNUAL MS WALKATHON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2015 STEVENS POINT

Last year more than 400 walkers participated and the event raised $26,500 for the cause. For more information about the event visit NationalMSSociety.org.

My Personal Experience with MS MS FUNDAISER DIRECTLY IMPACTS REAL PEOPLE ARTICLE AMANDA LUTZ | PHOTOGRAPHY SUBMITTED

M

y multiple sclerosis (MS) started with optic neuritis (blurred vision and color drained due to my body attacking my optic nerve) in June 2012. After many doctor visits, many MRI's and a spinal tap, I was finally diagnosed on October 1, 2012. This is a day you never forget. I was in partial shock and partial relief to finally understand what was going on with my body. As a wife and a mom with a four year old at home this was extremely scary to think about our future as a family. I am very fortunate to have amazing family and friends help me cope. It's a huge life change. The effects from my MS are the vision, optic neuritis, cognitive issues and the worse is fatigue. Sometimes I feel like people think I'm lazy. I worry too much about what people think so I try to prove people wrong and push myself. I have to learn that I need my rest. My husband is my rock. Sometimes I think he has the harder job than having the disease. You need one person to truly depend on. He's the one that gets my frustration and sees and helps me at the low points. This disease has changed his life too. Caregivers need love, too. Another adjustment is trying to deal with the unpredictability of the disease. Believe me, my disease is mild compared to others; however, I have to take it day-by-day due to the fatigue. I can't plan too far in advance because I don’t know when it will take over. When I have a flare-up it takes me out for months sometimes. It's a huge life change. There is a list of negative aspects associated with this but there is a whole lot of good too. It teaches you to slow down. Take one day at a time. Make time for yourself. Push yourself. I have run 5K’s for the first time in my life since I have been diagnosed. I did a 3.5 mile warrior dash mud run going through all types of obstacles and jumping over fire. I have learned to enjoy time with our 6-year-old son, Cameron, every night. I have made my friendships stronger over the years. I continue to work full time at Sentry Insurance and have been there since 2002. 24

Point & Plover Lifestyle | August 2015

This walk is important to me because when I was diagnosed I didn't know much about MS. I was reassured very quickly that the National MS Society-Wisconsin Chapter was here to help educate me and my family. When my family, friends and colleagues joined me in my first walk in April 2013 (6 months after diagnosis) in Wausau, we were amazed. I knew by then I was going to be okay and everything would be alright, but that walk confirmed to my husband and my family that I would be okay. When they saw for themselves that these other families were doing it and were happy, they knew I would be fine. The inspiration of others helped us all cope and heal. It was a reflection that I can do this. The MS walks are also set up to honor the caregivers. Again, my husband is my rock. He is an extremely caring man and he also deserves to be honored for all he does for me and our family on a daily basis. Our walk MS team name is "Too Inspired To Be Tired." Honestly, I found it on the internet but fell in love. I use this as my life motto. Fatigue is one of the most prominent symptoms of MS so some days I have to use this to push through the fatigue. Getting involved in these walks is not only empowering but every little bit of effort gets us all closer to our goal to stop MS from taking anything more from us. I feel that the MS walks are extremely important. MS is one of the top 10 diseases that researchers believe they will have a cure in our lifetime. That's huge! I would like people without MS to really understand fatigue is the biggest symptom of the disease. Sometimes we are categorized as lazy. I want people to understand it takes us five times more energy than the normal person to do simple tasks. The last note I would like to leave you with is sometimes we need someone to simply be there but not to fix anything in particular. Just let us feel we are supported and cared about. That's what walk MS does for us.

Parting Thoughts

Flight Of A Lifetime WORDS MATTHIEU VOLLMER | PHOTOGRAPHY DAN WEILER

O

n June 5, at the Stevens Point Municipal Airport, Brookdale Stevens Point residents experienced the flight of a lifetime through the Ageless Aviation Dreams Foundation (AADF). They flew in a fully restored 1940s Boeing Stearman. The foundation works to recognize veterans living in long-term care communities by providing a memorable experience in flight.
