Publisher’s Letter

Hello again, friends and neighbors!

F

all has arrived, along with all the beautiful colors we love to look at and a colder chill in the air. The children have been renewing friendships, put on hold during the summer break, as well as making new friends at school. Football games on Friday nights have become the place to be for many of us, while our Saturday afternoons might be spent cheering on the Badgers or Pointers. Sundays have us dressed in our teams favorite colors and spending the day cheering them on. Before the cold freeze sets in this year, be sure to take a walk through the woods and enjoy the colors and beauty that nature provides us. This issue of Point & Plover Lifestyle will allow us all to step back and enjoy the fall season while preparing for the winter to come. You will enjoy a story about the recent popularity of micro breweries, just in time for the Octoberfest celebrations. We help you prepare for the soon to arrive young visitors at our front door this Halloween. We share with you a new way a downtown business offers us at burning off some of those holiday calories. We also prepare you to hibernate in your home this winter, by sharing with you the plans of a locally owner interior design business. We hope you enjoy these stories and the many more we have in store for you on the pages to follow. Our Lifestyle Calendar will offer you new and exciting ways to enjoy the fall season, and includes a few options to prepare for the winter to come. This magazine is possible because of the support of its many sponsors. Be sure to remember them, and show how much you appreciate their support of your local publication, by supporting them and their valued community businesses. Last but not least, if you know of a local resident or business that we should all know about, or if you have an event or activity you want to share with everyone in the Stevens Point and Plover communities, please tell us so we can share it with everyone. Thank you for being our neighbor and friend.

Around Town CRAFTICOPIA BRINGS COMMUNITY TOGETHER Redeemer Lutheran Church is throwing open its doors to the public with Crafticopia, its second-annual “craft show and more,” to be held 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at the church. The Redeemer Lutheran Church event offers crafts, pesto, Indian food, live music, and more. Crafticopia has more than 40 vendors selling handcrafted goods, but that’s just the start. The event spotlights RLC’s homemade pesto, crafted mostly from basil grown at the church and mixed in the church’s own kitchen. In addition, there’s a silent auction, pumpkins and other harvest-time produce, kids’ activities, live music, and more. “When we started this last year we had the idea that this would be a true community celebration,” says the Rev. Annie Edison-Albright, RLC’s pastor. “So while Crafticopia is definitely a craft show, it uses the craft show to showcase our partners, involve the community, and let the community know how much we appreciate their involvement.” One thing about RLC the community certainly appreciates is the church’s pesto. The Church sold more than 100 jars of the condiment in less than four hours last year, and has made even more this year in anticipation of a pesto rush. For more information on Crafticopia, contact the church at 715.341.3233 or email Crafticopia@rlcpoint.org.

Moose Lodge was the host site where a Kids’ Casting Contest, tournament results and fundraiser were held. Vallin says a record number of kids participated in the casting contest. “The community support for the tournament, raffle and Kids’ Casting Contest is amazing,” said Rollie Vallin, tournament organizer, who started the event as a tribute to his late brother-in-law, Dan Sandstrom. “To be able to honor Dan through a fishing tournament and then to help the community by raising money for United Way’s Learn for Life program is what he would have wanted.” All monies raised through the raffle were given to Learn for Life, which is a unique collaboration between United Way and 14 elementary schools in Portage County. The goal of Learn for Life is to increase reading achievement in our community so that children in Portage County are proficient in reading by the time they finish third grade. The program is still looking for additional tutors who can commit to one hour per week during the school day to help students with their reading proficiency. “With the continued expansion of the program, we need volunteers who want to make a difference in the lives of children in our community by volunteering only an hour a week,” she says.

WALLEYE TOURNAMENT RAISES $16,850 FOR UNITED WAY Organizers of the Dan Sandstrom Walleye Tournament raised $16,850 for United Way of Portage County’s Learn for Life at their event Saturday, Aug. 1, on the Wisconsin River in Stevens Point. The tournament attracted 64 teams competing for $4,870 in prize money. Placing first in the tournament were Robin Engum and Matt Korpel who took home $1,000 for the win. The largest walleye was weighed in by Ed and Doug Kruzitski who took home $195 for it. Monetary prizes were also awarded to the other top 19 finishers in the tournament. The mystery fish (bluegill) category this year was won by Dwaine Engebretson and Brian Wierzba who won two $100 fishing rods for the accomplishment.

REGISTRATION OPEN FOR MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY Registration for people who may need help raking this fall or for volunteers who wish to help them is now open. Opportunities for raking assistance and volunteering are available through the United Way Volunteer Center’s annual Make A Difference Day Rake-A-Thon on Saturday, Oct. 24. One thousand volunteers helped rake nearly 170 yards throughout Portage County during last year’s event. People can find out if they qualify to have their yard raked by calling 2-1-1, an information referral service available through United Way of Portage County. People can also call on behalf of friends, neighbors or relatives they think might qualify for the service. Visit VolunteersRock.org for details. 12

Short Drive to a Little Paradise MARKET ON SIXTH

any of us like to enjoy a relaxing afternoon or evening with friends and family while sampling a fine bottle of wine and enjoying some local cheeses. It certainly is a superb way to welcome in the weekend. To some this might even sound like a small slice of paradise. Well if you would like to take part in this time of relaxing and enjoyment, it can happen for you and it is only a short 30-minute drive away. Market on Sixth, in Marshfield, opened its door in 2009 as a sister business to Traditions on Chestnut. Traditions on Chestnut was a cooking school and a kitchen retail business established in the early 2000s. The patrons at that time made repeated requests to the owners for a more expansive choice of culinary delights so a new building was erected and the Market on Sixth opened to provide Artisan cheeses, oils, vinegars and specialty wines from around the world. Market on Sixth's wine collection includes both old and new world wines from Europe to the West Coast, South America, and Australia, as well. More than 300 labels represent vineyards producing wines from the familiar to the obscure grape varieties. Chuck and Jill McCauley, long time residents of Marshfield, are owners of these businesses. The staff is composed of seven dedicated individuals, that capture the cultural delights of food, table, beverage and family/friendship gatherings. Traditions on Chestnut is now undergoing a metamorphosis to an event center. Opening this October and both shops

will continue to offer spectacular gifts, gustatory delights and gathering points for the surrounding communities, including Stevens Point and Plover. Some events include "Afternoon Delight," a wine and cheese gathering the last Friday afternoon of the month. In summer, weather permitting, the event is hosted on the beautiful Market on Sixth patio. Open wine tastings are held the 3rd Saturday afternoon in the Market on Sixth Tasting Room where two to three wines are hand-selected for sampling during that time. Occasional special events are also held such as the Tailgating on the Patio, Girls Nite Out, Brown Bag Lunch on the Patio, French Linen Trunk Show and a special Friends and Family Night. If you are looking to make a road trip to a unique and special market in the central Wisconsin area then be sure to visit Market on Sixth in Marshfield. It is that small piece of paradise, that we can all use, from time to time. t is getting to be that time of year, when the scary and funny looking creatures approach our front door with the greeting of "Trick or Treat." In most cases, the response from us is a sugar loaded treat dropped into their bucket or bag. But can we offer them a treat they will enjoy and be healthy at the same time? Not only is it possible, but if presented properly, it will be appreciated by not just the parents of our visitors this Halloween, but by the costumed creatures as well. During the Halloween time of year our children's sugar intake is many times higher than recommended, but how does this affect us and our children's health? The American Heart Association currently recommends that healthy adult males and females eat no more than 25-37 grams of sugar each day. For children, the recommended amount is between 10-16 grams. Recent studies show that people are consuming more than 60 pounds of sugar each year, with an average intake of 76.7 grams per day! Around Halloween the sugar intake by our children will be even higher than this 76.7 grams per day. Trick-or-treaters usually receive different types of candies or snacks in their goody bags. Having too much sugar in one's diet can lead to many bad health problems. It often can cause a rise in bad behavior causing stress on parents. Over-consumption of sugar can cause serious problems, such as obesity, diabetes, headaches, stomach pains, and poor nutrition overall. So, what are the healthy alternatives to those sugar loaded treats? Talk with your children about Halloween candy and set rules before they embark on consuming their goodies that they received from the neighbors. Halloween is a perfect time to introduce some healthy, alternative sweet treats that they can try instead of candies. Some of these are examples like roasted pumpkin seeds, homemade granola bars, dark chocolate, popcorn balls and I have even heard of a local home providing a ready to bake potato in a foil wrapped secure package. Treats

for the kids do not always have to be the kind they eat as well. Treats the kids will enjoy can also include glow sticks, arts and crafts, stickers, coloring books, plastic spiders and other play items. Think about when your child gets their "Happy Meal," they go after the prize first. Helping show children that there are other fun alternatives to candy, will help pave the road to healthy lifestyle changes. I thought I was conscious of my eating habits prior to having my son, but as soon as I became a parent, I found myself truly wanting to lead by example. We've made eating healthy fun in our house. My son's favorite treat is having a smoothie, consisting of only fruits and vegetables. If the smoothie is green, we call them Green Mustache Smoothies! That was a trick I learned from a colleague. Sometimes getting our children to eat the right types of foods isn't always easy...making healthy eating fun and leading by example are a great place to start for your children's sake. We many times misunderstand the true meaning of health. Health is a state of optimal physical mental and social well-being and not nearly the absence of disease and infirmities. Health is a commitment, it comes from within and within only. Health is when your body is functioning at one hundred percent. Health is about how your body functions and not how you feel. We as society find ourselves taking care of our health once we feel symptoms, but we need to invest in our health prior to any symptoms occurring. It's about investing in one's health today and not when sickness shows it's scary face. So with Halloween just around the corner take a few moments to think about a treat that will have the "trick-or-treaters" health in mind and have them leaving your door front not only with less sugar in their bag but also telling the other creatures that night, "You have to visit this house, look at the cool treat they are handing out!"

THE YOGA SPACE

1236 3rd Street Downtown Stevens Point 715.254.5823 YogaSpaceStevensPoint.com

ARTICLE DAN WEILER | PHOTOGRAPHY KELLY BALLARD

S

ome of us might not know the difference between Yogi Bear and yoga. I must admit that I was one of those people. After spending some time with Kelly and Bob Ballard of The Yoga Space in downtown Stevens Point, I have become aware of how beneficial yoga can be to everyone. "Awareness" is a valuable word in the yoga language as this spiritual and ascetic discipline allows for better awareness through breath control, simple meditation, and the adoption of specific bodily postures. Yoga is widely practiced for health and relaxation. Kelly and Bob opened The Yoga Space in June of 2014 with the mission of bringing people together through yoga by providing a comfortable space for people to connect with themselves and their community through breath and movement. Kelly earned her RYT 200 Yoga Alliance certification in March of 2014, from the Empowered Yoga in Appleton Wisconsin. "I believe yoga is for everyone, and I am in love with yoga because of the way I feel afterwards," Kelly shares. Yoga offers many benefits with some of them being improved physical fitness, better balance and core strength, as well as increased flexibility to name just a few. It also helps to benefit the body both mentally and emotionally. Yoga has been known to help with health concerns like high blood pressure, prenatal care, multiple sclerosis and osteoarthritis, as well as a preventative toward future injuries. The Yoga Space offers three separate classes for all levels of the yoga discipline. The Basics class is recommended for the beginner and allows one to become familiar with the poses and to explore how they feel to your body prior to entering into one of the faster paced classes. Kelly suggests taking 3 - 5 of the Basic classes when

16

Point & Plover Lifestyle | October 2015

you first start. This class is perfect for those looking for a relaxing, slow-paced yoga class. The All-Levels class transitions more quickly into a one breath/one movement flow and may include more challenging poses. The Heated classes are similar to the All-Levels, however the room is heated to 90 degrees to provide for a calorie burning workout like none other. "If you are planning on taking a Heated class, be sure to consume plenty of water before, during and after the class," Kelly suggests. Additionally, The Yoga Space offers a class for the specialized yoga discipline of Yin Yoga." This class allows for a more meditative style which focuses on increasing circulation and improving flexibility. The practice is floor-based and appropriate for beginner to advanced students. "A great fit for those of us you have a tough time getting from the sitting or lying position to a standing position," explains Kelly. All classes at The Yoga Space are drop-in. You can attend any class at any time. Classes can be signed up for and purchased in advance or at the studio five minutes prior to the class beginning. The first class is free. All supplies like mats, blocks and towels are provided. The only requirements for you to bring to the class are a bottled water and a desire to try a different exercise and fitness program. Many doctors recommend yoga as a way to stay fit not only physically but mentally and emotionally as well. So the next time you get up from that recliner and make an "old person" groan or want to lose a couple of pounds you just gained from eating the bag of chips and watching the Packer game, make a trip to downtown Stevens Point and visit The Yoga Space. Be sure to say "namaste" after the class to show your respect and gratitude.

After a few comments of "I think it would look better over there" or "Can you move it a foot more to the left." you quickly discover the image you saw in the store is not the same vision that is currently in your living room. The sofa and couch are too big for the room, the furniture's fabric color does not match the color of the walls and the wood trim on the end tables is not even close to the current wood trim in the room. The room group that looked so good in the store, now looks like a room that had the furniture and accessories purchased at local garage sales. The excitement you had in the furniture store is history, and you are left wondering, "What do I do now?" There is a better way to transform your house into the home of your dreams. Rene Jerzak and Donna Klismith are interior designer at the locally-owned Small Space Big Style design firm. Rene and Donna take great pride in making sure they know your taste and style, keeping it foremost in mind as they work with you through the process to achieve your desired results. Whatever your style--modern contemporary, eclectic, or elegant traditional--Small Space Big Style will help make your living space look stylish, and uniquely yours. If your are building a new home, you know all too well the headaches and bumps that come with building. You are dealing with questions from the builder that you must get right the first time as this will be your dream home for decades to come. Many of the questions being asked you do not even understand to say the least see how they will effect you in the future. Rene and Donna will work with you and your builder from the blueprint stage, to the exterior finishes to the final color and interior design of each room. Lee Magyera, a recent client of Small Space Big Style, had this to say about working with Rene and Donna: "They are easy to work with and they work with your style, even helping you figure out what your style is." Small Space Big Style has teamed up with many of the area's top builders to make sure your new home has a flow and feel that works. They will help guide you through the building processes involving flooring, tile, trim, paint, cabinets, countertops, lighting and all the other building details. Setting up the original layout and then helping you select the correct furniture and accessories that fill the new space. The smallest detail is taken into consideration, from placement of outlets to future planning for furniture and electronics. After asking Lee Magyera about how she felt about the final results she could only reply, "The final results blew me away, the results were awesome." But can Small Space Big Style help those of us that are not building a new home but instead looking to reimagine a tired old room or maybe remodeling a current home? No problem there either. Small Space Big Style has helped many clients from those looking for a new living room set to complete home renovations. When clients see a piece of artwork they love, Small Space Big Style can design a whole space tastefully incorporating that one piece. They help set up the bigger picture throughout the entire process. Rene likes to say, "If you give us the puzzle pieces, we will help you complete the puzzle and from time to time we will even help you find a missing puzzle piece or two." Winter lurks just around the corner, and it will soon be time for us to hibernate in our homes for the long season ahead. Winter will pass by much faster if we are enjoying the living spaces of our homes. Prepare now so that when January comes and you see that snow coming down, you can just say to yourself, "No problem, I am in the home of my dreams." October 2015 | Point & Plover Lifestyle

ver stop to notice the explosion of "craft" breweries in our community over the last few years? Even the inexperienced beer drinker may have noticed that the world of beer has changed over the last decade. More and more people are turning their backs on large manufacturers and focusing on beer produced in microbreweries. Before we look into the possible reasons for the increasing popularity of microbreweries, we need to define what the term means exactly. Technically speaking, a microbrewery is a brewery that produces less than six million barrels of beer annually. Another term for this kind of operation, and certainly a fancier one, is “craft brewery.” In addition to the precisely defined amount of beer produced per year, a brewery can be classified as “micro” only if it is independent. In this case, independency means that less than 1/4th of it is owned or operated by another brewery that can not be classified as “micro.” The number of microbreweries is on the constant rise, especially in North America and Europe. The trend began late in the 1970s in Great Britian where “cask beer” suddenly became popular and where the tax laws were very favorable for such operations. From there, the trend travelled overseas and over the course of following decades completely conquered USA and Canada. Today, there isn’t a large city in those countries without at least one microbrewery, and in some cities their number is not even proportional to the number of residents. One of the reasons why microbreweries are so popular these days may lie in the fact that the average beer drinker has matured and has higher expectations. The usual watered-down, bland and dull macro beers don’t seem to satisfy their taste and they simply move on in search of tastier options. Another possibility could be that the selection is just so much larger with microbreweries. These breweries constantly come up with different beers, seasonal brews

and are always competing with each other in flavor and technology innovations. "Finding inspiration for flavors is easy, we try to brew something very interesting that will make people say 'wow,'" says Marc Buttera, of O'so brewery in Plover. "When you actually see that happen, it is very inspiring. We really like sour and funky beers so that is somewhat of the direction our brewery is taking." Another factor, that should not be overlooked, is a sense of “hipness” that microbreweries share. For some people, drinking a cheap, industrial made beer for masses is something they wouldn’t be caught dead doing. Going for an obscure, hip-named brand from a local microbrewery gives them a sense of exclusivity that they long for in their life. In other words, because it's cool. Of course, let’s not forget that sense of independence that many people feel, especially when it comes to big business. If given the choice between a locally brewed beer that supports the community and includes the natural resources of the area, and a standard macro beer, the choice is obvious. "This business is a tough one and the folks that are thriving in this industry are going up against corporate giants everyday to fight for coveted tap and store shelf space...it's not easy," Buttera shares. Generally, microbreweries sell their beer to local pubs and bars in the city they call home or they have their own bars and beer gardens located within or near the brewery. This, of course, means regular customers, people who love going out to same places and who are loyal to them for ages. The same goes for the loyalty for a brewery, no matter what kind of beer they produce. It's safe to assume that locals would probably rather go for a locally made beer from a microbrewery than for the kind that is available across the nation. October 2015 | Point & Plover Lifestyle

A Reason to Shop, Share and Socialize WOMEN'S FUND A.R.T.S NIGHT ARTICLE RACHAEL THOMAS | PHOTOGRAPHY JOAN NORTH

T

here might be no truer statement ever said than, "Behind every good man, is a great woman." A local women's organization has elevated this statement even higher and helped create a new statement, "Behind every good woman, is a group of great women." Founded in 1997, the Women’s Fund of Portage County is a charitable fund within the Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin and is a collaborative partner with the Saint Michael’s Foundation and the Stevens Point Area YMCA Foundation. The organization is led by a group of volunteers that donate their time and efforts to make a major impact, right here in our community. Their contribution to local causes and organizations started with a total of $1,200 in the year 2000 and has now grown to almost $53,000 for 2015, and still counting. Their mission is to empower women philanthropists by creating opportunities to fund programs that will develop the full potential of local women and children. Their future vision is for the Women's Fund of Portage County to be sufficiently capitalized to make a difference in the lives of women and children in Portage County. The goals of the Women’s Fund of Portage County, are as follows: granting funds and offering assistance to nonprofit organizations that foster opportunities for the economic, educational, physical, emotional, social, artistic and/or personal growth of Portage County women and children of all ages, cultures, nationalities, races and abilities and increasing community awareness of the significant needs of women and children. Recent accomplishments in 2015 for the Women’s Fund include allocating $52,800 to 16 projects (including their two partners). Some of these projects include Operation Bootstrap, CAP Services, Project Fresh Clothes, Cribs for Kids and Family Crisis Center, just to name a few. Of the $52,800 amount 42 percent came from interest from their endowment and 58 percent came from their fund raising events. More than $349,000 has been awarded to 62 agencies since 1997. Sexual assault victims, school children with food or clothing needs, moms in need—all have been embraced by the Women’s Fund. In 2012-13, the Spark the Legacy Endowment Campaign increased the endowment to $600,000+ with the generous support of 74 people who pledged $1,500 or more and hundreds who gave at different amounts. Over the years, the Women’s Fund has benefitted from more than 500 generous donors; more than $20,000 comes from the endowment yearly for grants.

Point & Plover Lifestyle | October 2015

The main fund raising events for the Women's Fund of Portage County include the upcoming A.R.T.S Night on October 28th. The event is subtitled as "A Reason To Shop-Share-Socialize." The event raises $25,000+ with the sale of local artists’ works, a raffle, silent auction, and sponsorships. Over 300 people are expected to attend and enjoy this event in late October. The other main event is the Spring Luncheon which occurred on May 8th earlier this year at SentryWorld. Almost 200 supporters celebrated with our grant recipients and honored the “Spark” recipient who has impacted our community and our organization the most. The Women's Fund of Portage County continues to grow each year but they can only do so with the local community support. Show your support to the Women's Fund of Portage County so that they can continue to support the many worth while projects. A.R.T.S NIGHT

To Be Thankful For INTERFAITH FOOD PANTRY OF PORTAGE COUNTY ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY DAN WEILER

M

ost of us sit down to the dinner table each night and give thanks for the food that is provided to us, even though sometimes we take it for granted. Imagine spending the day not knowing if any food will be available for your family that evening. It is a scary fact of life for some families in Portage county. Thanks to the efforts of the Interfaith Food Pantry of Portage County, these families have the opportunity to enjoy a meal, and give thanks as well. The Interfaith Food Pantry of Portage County started to offer assistance to local families in need in 1999 while based out of the Springs Methodist Church basement, in Plover. At the time they provided assistance to 10-12 families each month. Today the local pantry is located at 2820 Post Road in Plover and assists with providing supplemental food supplies to over 160 families and over 600 individuals during each pantry food delivery day. The food is provided at the Plover location between 6 and 8 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month and is available to Portage county residents. The only requirement for the assistance in a proof of Portage county residency. The unemployed, under employed, elderly and all others in need of assistance are welcome. The Interfaith Food Pantry of Portage County is a non-profit organization and is dependent on the support of the local community in all aspects of its operations. Donations of food, funds and volunteer work hours are always in demand and greatly appreciated. On average, the donation pantry Tuesday will see 25-30 volunteers assisting with the food distribution, while a separate dozen or so volunteers will help with the set up of the pantry before the 6 p.m. opening. While many of the volunteers are local residents, some local businesses like WalMart, Kwik Trip and McCain Foods provide valuable assistance with food donations. Tahn Groose, a pantry volunteer, says, "Our largest provider of food products is the Feeding America Organization based out of

Omro Wisconsin. They provide us with over 50 percent of our supplemental food products that we distribute to the local families in need." The pantry is also supported by two major food drives each year during the spring. The first being the "Scouting for Food Drive" organized by the local Boy Scout troops and a second food drive organized by our local post office. The pantry will be moving a short distance this fall due to the road construction in Plover. Their current building will be leveled and a new and better functioning facility will be built directly behind the current location. The cost of the new building is going to be covered by the Department of Transportation thru federal funding. The building will be owned by the Village of Plover with a no cost lease offered to the Interfaith Food Pantry of Portage County. The building project is being managed by Keller Inc. and they are currently taking bids for the construction process to follow later this fall. The ground breaking in planned for late September with the grand opening scheduled before the end of 2015. With the move there are additional expenses that the Interfaith Food Pantry of Portage County is looking to raise via a Capital Funds Drive. The end goal in funds to be raised is $100,000. If any local businesses or residents would like to provide a donation, please contact Tahn Groose or Mel Dow at 715.544.0895. The Stevens Point and Plover communities have always been known for their support and assisting those in need. They have also been known for displaying their gratitude toward those individuals and business that go above and beyond the call of service. We should all show our thanks to the volunteers and supporters of the Interfaith Food Pantry of Portage County for without them some local families would not have the opportunity to give thanks for a dinner each night. Parting Thoughts

The Loving Step Forward TODAY'S PODIATRIST WORDS BY DR. WILLIAM QUINN

T

he day ends and many of us say to ourselves, "It is time to rest these dogs of mine." Our feet are the tires of the human body and are our way to reach the events and loved ones we wish to spend time with. Who has not had the occasional sore foot or turned ankle? The discipline of podiatric medicine has evolved significantly in the past one hundred years. Today's practicing podiatrist has almost the exact same education and training as medical doctors and osteopathic doctors. After a four-year college degree with an emphasis on science and premedical subjects, podiatrists have four years of further study in an accredited college of podiatric medicine. There are nine podiatric medical colleges in the United States. Almost all of the 50 states require a two- to three-year post graduate residency training with specific and significant surgical training in foot and ankle procedures. Most podiatrists are surgically based, but all podiatrists render nonsurgical and orthopedic care of the foot. Modern medicine has changed greatly over those hundred years. We are all familiar with large managed health facilities, frustrating insurance regulations and in-and-out of network care. Podiatric medicine is no stranger to this, and podiatrists and their staff are well versed in all the facets of this business of delivering foot care. The trend in podiatric medicine if for new doctors to align themselves with these large medical delivery systems. However, about 50 percent of all podiatrists still work in small private clinics. The "older system" of health care delivery usually allows for a better patient focused experience with less concern about time and more concern about correcting the problem, also reducing pain and stress on the patient. Almost all doctors of podiatric medicine are board certified in advanced surgical procedures and/or areas of specific concern such as Sports Medicine or biomechanical correction of foot pathologies. These certifications require more extensive training and testing to obtain, and resulting in a more qualified podiatrist. Always demand the best and only seek out a board certified podiatrist. Podiatric medical offices can be contacted directly in most instances. Check with your insurance provider for the referral from your primary care physician. All foot and ankle problems from fungal toenails to heel pain, to small traumatic accidents and advanced reconstructive surgery can be diagnosed and treated by podiatrists. The American Podiatric 34

Medical Association and the Wisconsin Podiatric Medical Association are great resources for information about foot problems or to find a qualified podiatrist in a convenient location for you. All podiatrist want to help their patients get healthy and always put their best foot forward. So, the next time those "puppies" are bothering you, be sure to give them the proper care they require. Your local auto club might be able to replace a flat tire, but they can not replace a foot!

Dr. William B. Quinn has been in practice in Central Wisconsin for 33 years. He is board certified in reconstructive foot surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgery. Located at Plaza Podiatry Associates LLC, 140 N. Wilshire Blvd., Stevens Point, 715.341.1266.
