The Spirit of the Season: Traditions, Joy, and Community

As we prepare to step into 2025, I find it hard to believe how quickly this year has flown by! The holiday season is upon us, and with it comes the familiar warmth and joy that fills the air. During this time, many of us seek to recreate the magic we felt as children, cherishing the traditions that made those memories so special. I love embracing the season’s spirit by sharing joyful experiences with my children—like baking our favorite Christmas cookies and marveling at the enchanting lights adorning our neighborhood homes.

This month, we’re excited to highlight the magic of the season and showcase the wonderful contributions of local businesses that bring holiday cheer to our community. From delightful food and festive entertainment to opportunities for giving back, there’s so much to celebrate together. While the holidays are filled with joy for many, they can also be difficult for those facing loss or loneliness. Let’s spread kindness and compassion by reaching out to support those who may need extra care this season.

My wish for you this holiday season is to feel love and peace, and let’s continue to extend grace and empathy to one another. Wishing you a wonderful holiday season filled with cherished moments and the priceless gift of time spent with family and friends!

Making Spirits

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”

As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.

Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.

One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.

Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.

These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just

about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”

We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.

To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.

The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.com

Behind THE CURTAIN

THE WONDER OF PHS THEATER AND THE COMMUNITY THAT BRINGS IT TO LIFE

ARTICLE BY AMBER DOBYNS PHOTOGRAPHY BY FIREHEART PHOTOGRAPHY

When the curtain rises, the real world fades away as the spotlight shines on the Porter High School (PHS) theater students, taking the stage to captivate audiences one scene at a time. But this moment is not just for the actors. For every member of the PHS theater department, this is the time when months of hard work behind the scenes, creating sets, and practicing lines come together, transforming the previously bare stage into a community’s magical production.

Behind every great school production, students collaborate to bring their shared visions to life through combined talents,

passions, and teamwork. Bringing characters to life one role at a time is Dominic Kelley, the PHS Fine Arts Department Theater Teacher. Mr. Kelley aims to provide a space where students can be themselves, feel safe, and overcome their fears, while inspiring them to never give up. With his coaching and guidance, students find unity in their all-hands-on-deck mentality, seeking support from faculty, parental volunteers, local businesses, and sponsors to build set designs, assemble costumes, rehearse musical numbers, and prepare for the final call of “lights, camera, action!”

PHS Senior Esteban Fernando Saucedo channeled his inner Andrew Garfield throughout his audition, incorporating the star’s dynamic characteristics and

reactions into the unspoken language of theater. Esteban and his classmates learn the value of time management early on as they juggle schoolwork and rehearsals, driven by their love for the theater program. Theater also teaches resilience, collaboration, and how to handle pressure with grace—skills that apply not only to the stage but to every area of their lives.

For every dramatic entrance on stage, there is an equally unforgettable exit. The plays are transformed from school productions into something even bigger—a community celebration. Get involved, support, and attend the next PHS production! Visit the PHS Facebook page to stay up to date with the 2025 Theater Department performances.

Sgt. David Miller’s Lifelong Service Through Law Enforcement and the Sharing is Caring Food Drive

Committed to Community

ARTICLE BY AMBER DOBYNS

No mask, no cape, just a badge that shines bright when coming to the rescue. Sgt. David Miller bears the title of hero in such a humble way. He’s dedicated his life to serving the New Caney/Porter community, both in his 30-year law enforcement career and through his work with the  Sharing is Caring food drive.

Growing up in a simpler time, Sgt. Miller remembers a tight-knit community where neighbors helped one another, and local businesses thrived. He believes that the community is an extension of family, and a small act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intentions. Sgt. Miller’s commitment to service is rooted in his desire to make a positive impact.

Throughout his tenure, Sgt. Miller has been invited into homes where poverty is glaringly obvious… The first indication is always empty pantries. Wearing heavy on his heart, Sgt. Miller began a search for ways to use his position to help those in need and found Mission Northeast. They’ve partnered together multiple times in the past, and this year they celebrate 8 years of consistent support with the Sharing is Caring food drive. Through gathering donations and partnerships with various first responder agencies, alumni, and organizations, volunteers from all walks of life come together as agents of change.

Donations begin each October to prepare for the holiday season, a time when families are together, and children are out of school. The annual  Sharing is Caring drive helps ensure that Mission Northeast can provide meals throughout the day. This year they collected a heartfelt $23,022.04 and over three truckloads of Food and Supplies.

This holiday season, as you plan family gatherings, consider volunteering or donating. Every act of kindness, no matter how big or small, can make a profound impact on hundreds within our community. Sgt. David Miller is just one example of that!

CONFECTION

Elevate your holiday hot chocolate with a charcuterie experience

As winter settles in and the air chills, there’s nothing more comforting than a steaming cup of hot chocolate. While a simple cup of hot cocoa can warm the soul, why not take it up a notch and indulge in a hot cocoa charcuterie board? Picture a delightful spread of various hot chocolate flavors, mix-ins, and toppings, inviting you to create a personalized, delicious mug of joy. Let’s explore the wonders of old-fashioned hot cocoa and all the accompaniments you can use to create your very own hot cocoa charcuterie board.

THE DELIGHTS OF OLD-FASHIONED HOT COCOA

Old-fashioned hot cocoa transports us to simpler times and brings with it a sense of nostalgia. The slow, traditional process of making hot chocolate from scratch – with real chocolate, milk and a touch of sweetness – provides a distinctly memorable experience for the holidays.

OLD-FASHIONED HOT COCOA

Ingredients

• ¼ cup 60% cacao chocolate morsels

• ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa

• 1/3 cup white granulated sugar

• 2 cups milk

• 2 cups half and half

• 1 pinch salt

• ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Directions

Heat all ingredients (except vanilla extract) in a 2-quart saucepan over medium-low heat until almost boiling. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.

CREATING THE PERFECT HOT COCOA

CHARCUTERIE BOARD

Gone are the days of selecting only between marshmallows and whipped cream as toppings. With a hot cocoa charcuterie board, you can delve into a world of flavors, textures and spices that will make each sip an adventure, and serve as a sweet centerpiece to your holiday gatherings.

Begin by selecting a variety of flavors and mix-ins, such as mini marshmallows, salted caramels, white chocolate morsels and peppermints. Pair your hot cocoa with delectable treats like cookies, gum drops, crème-filled wafer rolls or chocolate-covered espresso beans. Consider adding biscotti, chocolate-dipped spoons or chocolate-coated pretzels as well as whipped toppings and an assortment of sprinkles.

VARIATIONS TO SAVOR

Indulge in some exciting recipes that are sure to elevate your hot chocolate into fun and festive beverages during the holidays and throughout the colder months.

MINTY FRESH WONDER

Embrace the festive season with a mint-infused hot cocoa. Fancify your beverage with a peppermint stick or make your

own crushed candy cane dust for a touch of holiday cheer. This minty delight is a crowd-pleaser and a perfect indulgence for cozy winter evenings.

SPICY AZTEC ELIXIR

Channel your inner adventurer with an Aztec-inspired hot cocoa. Infuse your drink with a touch of chili powder and a dash of cinnamon. Garnish with a cinnamon stick for a festive presentation. This fiery blend will ignite your senses and warm you from the inside out.

GROWN-UP GRASSHOPPER

Transform your drink into a rich adult-only grasshopper hot cocoa by adding 2 oz. of crème de menthe or a shot of peppermint schnapps. Adorn with a crushed candy cane rim for a playful offering.

DECADENT SALTED CARAMEL INDULGENCE

Elevate your hot cocoa experience with a drizzle of homemade salted caramel. The combination of slightly bitter cocoa and sweet, buttery caramel is a match made in heaven. Sprinkle an extra pinch of sea salt for that irresistible contrast.

Our Favorite Christmas Traditions

Moments of Magic, Joy, and Gratitude

As the holiday season approaches, the Porter City Lifestyle team is excited to share our favorite things about Christmas. From the enchantment of festive lights and children’s excitement to the spiritual practice of prayer through Christmas cards, to heartwarming family gatherings, we share our personal ways we embrace the spirit of the holidays. It’s a reflection on the little moments that make this time of year special for us.

ARTICLE BY PORTER CITY LIFESTYLE TEAM

RACHEL BURK

It’s the twinkle of the Christmas lights every evening on the drive home, the yard ornaments that invite a jolly feeling in passing, and the excitement as the cooler weather sets in that Santa is on his way. The Christmas lists, the decorating, the prayers, and the celebrations of Jesus make the season magical. Milk and cookies set out to indulge the merry man, while stockings peacefully wait to be filled. It’s the morning pitter-patter of tiny feet and soft giggles as the sound of paper tearing fills the house. It’s the moments of enchantment and joy that make the season so special.

JAMIE ALLGOOD

The most precious part of Christmas is the gift we receive from God, but a tradition I hold dear is the exchanging of Christmas cards. Although many families have moved away from sending cards, I treasure it dearly. I keep a cute box filled with the cards we receive as the centerpiece on our dining table throughout the year. At each meal, we randomly select a card, and that family becomes the focus of our prayers. So often, those prayers arrive when they're needed most, creating a Christmas miracle that lasts all year.

STACY LEACH

The holidays are such a special time in our home, filled with so many little moments that I love. From our tradition with the smell of freshly baked cookies to the twinkling lights, everything feels a bit more magical. The kids' excitement is contagious as they count down the days until Santa arrives. The laughter of family gathered together, sharing stories, and just being together—it’s my favorite part. There's something about this time of year that brings out extra kindness in people, and I’m so grateful to be surrounded by it.
