More than Money

At least one or two mornings a week when I walk by the bathroom I can hear my husband listening, as he shaves, to YouTube videos of Warren Buffett.

Widely considered the greatest investor of all time, Buffett bought his first stock at age 11, purchased 400 acres of Nebraska farmland at 14, and is now worth well over $100 billion dollars—even after giving away tens of billions to charity. The rest of us mortals, to put it mildly, lack his acumen.

So what comes to mind when you think of "investing"? It's probably money, stocks, and retirement accounts. Yet to invest, by definition, includes the following, according to Merriam-Webster:

• To commit (money) in order to earn a financial return

• To make use of for future benefits or advantages

• To involve or engage especially emotionally. For our second annual April investment issue, we're covering all three and more, taking care to focus on your finances, your health, and your home.

For your finances, Portland Trust Company CEO Amelia Dow is back to share why trusts might be a good idea and how to set one up. Stephen Tucker of Tucker and Tucker in Scarborough is helping you invest in your home as well as your emotional well-being and safety with some of the best audio, visual, and security upgrades available on the market today. And finally, Dr. Brent Reiche of Active Chiropractic in Saco shares an innovative and life-changing new therapy that could be one of the most important steps you take toward investing in your health.

I'll never be Warren Buffett, but I've always lived by the maxim that if I spend money on something that makes me healthier, happier, or better, it's not an expense—it's an investment. It's about those future benefits after all. We hope this issue helps you take a deeper look at what might be worthy of your investment this spring, no matter how you define it.

The Ultimate Home Tech Guide

Stephen Tucker shares the best smart home, security, and entertainment upgrades for a modern, connected lifestyle

For over 35 years, Tucker & Tucker Audio Video by Design has been a frontrunner in integrated home technologies that elevate comfort, security, and entertainment, offering bespoke solutions that cater to the modern homeowner's needs. From state-of-the-art audio/video systems to comprehensive smart home automation, their services are designed to enrich your living experience.

In addition to custom set-ups, Tucker & Tucker places an emphasis on access and support. After all, what’s the point of a high-tech system if you can’t even use it? “When it comes down to it, as much as we love putting high-end audio and movies in our clients’ lives, we are a service company. In 2019, we added 24/7/365 support to our customers. They can reach a live tech via phone, text or email day or night, and we have an emergency on-call tech until 10:00 PM on weekends and holidays,” says Stephen Tucker, the company’s founder.

Read on to learn more about integrated home systems and the benefits of investing in a smart home.

AUDIO/VIDEO SYSTEMS

A high-quality audio and video setup can redefine how you experience entertainment at home. Whether you're a music enthusiast desiring crystal-clear sound throughout your house or a television buff seeking an immersive viewing experience, modern customized solutions ensure that technology enhances your lifestyle without disrupting your home's aesthetics. “Harvard Health has noted that ‘music boosts our mood and wellbeing, and music therapy may help during treatments for certain health conditions,’” says Tucker. “I know for certain that it helped me get through

the isolation of COVID when many of us—both young and old—started listening to vinyl records again.”

HOME THEATER

Imagine having a personal cinema where you can watch the latest blockbusters or binge-watch your favorite series in unparalleled comfort. With the advent of advanced technologies, home theaters have become more accessible and customizable, allowing for a personalized entertainment hub that caters to your unique tastes. Choose from a variety of options including screen size, sound system, room acoustics, and lighting to create your perfect home theater experience.

HOME SECURITY

In today's world, ensuring the safety of your home and loved ones is paramount, and cutting-edge home security systems provide peace of mind. These smart security solutions include wireless, low-profile systems equipped with instant alerts and high-definition surveillance, allowing you to monitor your property in real-time from anywhere. Integration with smart home technology means you can control locks, cameras, and alarms through a single interface, enhancing both security and convenience. “I love having cameras and video doorbells that allow me to see when my family members get home or if I have a delivery,” says Tucker. “There have been numerous times when our clients have used their cameras to catch unwanted guests. In one instance, we installed a trigger to notify homeowners if their grandkids wandered into the pool area. Overall, these systems provide a sense of safety.”

SMART HOME AUTOMATION

The concept of a smart home has transitioned from a luxury to a cornerstone of modern living. Through a simple app on your smartphone or tablet, you can control lighting, climate, entertainment systems, and more. This integration not only adds

“Our clients have used their cameras to catch unwanted guests, and we even installed a trigger to notify homeowners if their grandkids wandered into the pool area.”

convenience but also enhances energy efficiency, potentially reducing utility bills.

OUTDOORS

Your outdoor spaces are extensions of your home and deserve the same attention to detail. With weather-resistant audio and video installations, ambient lighting, and robust Wi-Fi coverage, you can host gatherings or enjoy solitary relaxation with ease. Outdoor entertainment systems have evolved to offer the same quality and reliability as indoor setups, ensuring that your exterior spaces are just as inviting and functional. “Outdoors is one of my favorite places to listen to music,” says Tucker. “When we started installing speakers outside in the early 90s, they all rusted in the harsh coastal Maine weather. Nearly three decades later, we’re installing high performance outdoor audio and lighting from Coastal Source made of solid brass. The sound rivals the best indoor systems and makes family gatherings that much better.”

NETWORK IT SERVICES

A reliable and fast network is the backbone of any modern home, especially here in Maine. Tucker & Tucker provides state-of-the-art high-speed network designs that support multiple devices operating simultaneously. Whether it's smartphones, streaming services, workstations, or smart home devices, their network solutions ensure seamless connectivity. As homes become more interconnected, the demand for robust network infrastructure has increased, making it a critical component of home investment.

SHADES AND LIGHTING

Sick of the sunlight hitting your eyes first thing in the morning? Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood and functionality of your home, and new smart shades and lighting solutions can be controlled via a single keypad or remote and integrated as part of a larger home automation system. This allows for effortless control over the ambiance of your spaces, enhancing both comfort and energy efficiency.

WELLNESS

Incorporating technology that promotes health and wellness is a growing trend in home investment. Tucker & Tucker provides solutions that enhance indoor air quality, regulate circadian lighting, and create environments conducive to relaxation and well-being. As homeowners become more health-conscious, integrating wellness-focused technologies has become a priority, making homes not just smarter but also healthier. “One of the latest technologies is called human-centric lighting, which offers lighting conditions in harmony with the biological clock,” says Tucker. “Natural light in the morning informs our bodies that the day has begun, while cooler white light stimulates the body and lets it know that we need to concentrate and be alert. Warm white light in the evening can help us relax and rewind.”

Investing in your home with high-quality technology not only elevates your living experience but also adds value to your property. Tucker & Tucker’s commitment to quality, personalized design, and cutting-edge technology ensures that your home meets the demands of modern life while reflecting your unique style and preferences.

TRUST TH E PROCESS

Historians think trusts date all the way back to the 12th century. At the time, English landowners who were heading off to war would transfer ownership of their land to another person. In other words, they would “trust” someone else to manage all the responsibilities of land ownership and hold all rights to the property until the original owner’s return.

While today’s trusts have certainly evolved, the basic concept of entrusting someone else with property when an owner is unable to manage their own affairs is still the same. Trust property can include, but is not limited to, wealth, real estate, and even sentimental items like jewelry, photographs, and collectibles.

The establishment of a trust allows the grantor, or the person who creates the trust, to very specifically control how their property will be managed and distributed after death or in other scenarios. In many cases, a will, which directs the distributions of assets at the time of someone’s passing, is a sufficient component of an estate plan. However, trusts do provide additional benefits that may be helpful for some.

Portland Trust Company CEO Amelia Dow explains what a trust is and whether it can be beneficial for you

FLEXIBILITY

In addition to determining the beneficiaries of a trust, the grantor has the ability to control how and when assets are ultimately distributed and under what circumstances distributions will be made. For example, some trusts allow distributions when a beneficiary attains a certain age or meets a specific need such as education or medical care.

PROTECTION OF ASSETS

Once a trust is established and funded, the trust owns the assets rather than the grantor. Because the assets are no longer included in the grantor’s personal estate, they are typically protected from creditors and lawsuits.

AVOID PROBATE

Probate courts administer the transfer of estate assets at death, and wills are public records and can be disputed in the court. Because a trust owns the assets, they are not included in the grantor’s estate and therefore are not subject to the probate court. Avoiding probate ensures privacy and allows trust assets to be distributed efficiently and promptly after death.

MINIMIZING TAXES

Historically, trusts were used as a vehicle to provide estate, gift, and generation-skipping tax benefits. This is less common today as both Maine and federal tax exemption amounts have risen steadily over the past several years (they currently stand at $7 million and $13.99 million, respectively). It is estimated that only roughly 1% of Americans are subject to estate taxes.

Your estate planning attorney can help you determine if an irrevocable trust might be a good estate planning option for you and your family. A full-service wealth management firm like Portland Trust Company can handle the rest.

therapy leads to lasting results

REVOLUTIONIZING RECOVERY

In a world where we prioritize financial investments, we often overlook the most important one—our health. SoftWave regenerative therapy is emerging as a game-changer in non-invasive treatment, offering promising results for those suffering from neuropathy, chronic pain, and even post-surgical recovery. Dr. Brent Reiche of Active Chiropractic in Saco is leading the charge as the only provider of SoftWave therapy in southern Maine. In this Q&A, he breaks down the therapy, its benefits, and why investing in proactive care pays dividends.

CAN YOU EXPLAIN WHAT SOFTWAVE REGENERATIVE THERAPY IS AND HOW IT WORKS?

Absolutely. SoftWave is a truly non-invasive regenerative therapy that utilizes hypersonic sound waves to stimulate the body’s natural healing response. Unlike other treatments that claim to be non-invasive but require injections, SoftWave does not involve needles or medication. It works by mimicking the body’s pain signals, triggering a healing response that recruits stem cells to damaged tissue, promoting regeneration and pain relief.

WHAT CONDITIONS IS SOFTWAVE MOST EFFECTIVE FOR?

SoftWave therapy is incredibly versatile. It’s used across multiple medical fields, from orthopedics to dermatology to pelvic health. In our practice, we see the greatest success with neuropathy patients. Neuropathy, which often results from chemotherapy or diabetes, causes loss of sensation in the hands and feet.

There’s no known cure, but we’ve had patients regain significant feeling and function after just one session.

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL SESSION LOOK LIKE?

We begin with a standardized neurology test called the Toronto Clinical Scoring System, which measures the patient’s ability to sense sharpness, temperature, vibration, and touch. Then, we use the SoftWave device to scan for damaged tissue. If there’s no damage, the sensation is minimal—just a light tapping. However, if damaged tissue is present, the therapy “lights up” the area, mimicking a pain response that signals the brain to send healing factors. Most patients feel relief after just one session, and we’ve had people cry from joy after regaining feeling in their feet for the first time in years.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

None. Because it’s non-invasive, there’s no downtime or recovery period. The only

CONTINUED >

discomfort comes if the therapy identifies damaged tissue, but that’s a sign that healing is happening.

MANY PEOPLE WAIT UNTIL THEY’RE IN PAIN TO SEEK TREATMENT. WHY IS PROACTIVE CARE IMPORTANT?

Because it’s cheaper and gives you more choices. Whether we’re talking about the stock market or your health, waiting until there’s a crisis means you’ll have to put in

INVESTING EARLY IN YOUR HEALTH—WHETHER

THROUGH

MOVEMENT, HYDRATION, OR

PREVENTATIVE TREATMENTS—DELIVERS LONGTERM DIVIDENDS IN LONGEVITY AND QUALITY OF LIFE.

significantly more time, money, and effort to recover. Investing early in your health— whether through movement, hydration, or preventative treatments—delivers long-term dividends in longevity and quality of life. If you wait too long, your options become limited.

DO PATIENTS COME SPECIFICALLY FOR SOFTWAVE THERAPY, OR DO THEY DISCOVER IT THROUGH OTHER TREATMENTS?

Both. Some patients seek us out because they’ve heard about SoftWave’s benefits, while others are introduced to it as part of a comprehensive wellness plan. It can be used as a standalone treatment or in conjunction with other therapies like spinal decompression, stem cell therapy, and doctor-supervised weight loss.

WHAT ARE SOME COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT SOFTWAVE THERAPY AND CHIROPRACTIC CARE?

A big misconception about chiropractic care is that once you start, you can never stop. That’s like saying you should only eat well until you feel better—health is a lifelong commitment. As for SoftWave, some people assume it’s a magic wand. While it does produce dramatic results, not everyone experiences instant relief. Sometimes, it takes a few sessions, and for others, maintenance treatments may be needed.

IF SOMEONE WANTS TO INVEST IN THEIR LONG-TERM HEALTH, WHERE SHOULD THEY START?

The basics: drink more water, move your body, and prioritize recovery through sleep. Everyone knows what they should be doing, but many don’t follow through. Health doesn’t come from medication or surgery alone—it comes from consistent, proactive choices. Chiropractic care, SoftWave therapy, and other natural treatments work with the body rather than forcing it into temporary fixes.

CAN YOU SHARE A SUCCESS STORY?

One of my favorite cases was a high school basketball player who had an ACL tear. We treated her both pre- and post-surgery, and after just

one SoftWave session, she had reduced pain and increased range of motion. She was amazed at how much better she felt immediately. SoftWave is great for post-surgical healing because it speeds up recovery and reduces inflammation.

WHAT’S YOUR FINAL MESSAGE FOR PEOPLE CONSIDERING SOFTWAVE THERAPY?

Invest in your health now, and you’ll have more options down the road. If you’re in pain or struggling with a chronic condition, SoftWave might be the breakthrough you’ve been looking for. And if we determine it’s not the right fit, we’ll help you find an alternative that is. Your health is your greatest asset— treat it that way.

NXGEN FITNESS

INVEST IN YOUR GREENS

PHOTOGRAPHY BY

Boost your health by adding a generous serving of fresh greens to your daily diet. While both cooked and raw vegetables offer health benefits, consuming them raw often provides the most nutrients. Raw greens are rich in fiber, antioxidants, and essential vitamins, helping to lower inflammation and reduce the risk of disease.

DANDELION GREENS:

Dandelion greens are a nutritious and easy addition to any meal, perfect for salads or cooked dishes. They are rich in vitamins A, C, K, chlorophyll, and fiber, making them a great choice for digestion and overall health. Their light flavor and texture enhance salads and sandwiches.

BROCCOLI:

Broccoli is often hailed as a nutritional powerhouse, packed with a variety of vitamins and minerals that support overall health. Known for being high in vitamins A, C, and K, it also contains important minerals like potassium, iron, and calcium. In addition, it’s a rich source of beta-carotene, flavonoids, and fiber. Whether raw or cooked, broccoli is an excellent choice for immune system support, making it one of the most nutrient-dense vegetables available.

BRUSSELS SPROUTS:

Brussels sprouts are a highly nutritious cruciferous vegetable, known for their vitamin C, K, and folate content, as well as carotenoids and fiber. These vegetables can be shaved, sliced, sautéed, boiled, or grilled, offering a range of flavors from mild to bitter, depending on preparation.

KALE:

Kale is loaded with essential nutrients such as vitamins C, B6, E, K, and manganese. It contains twice as much selenium as spinach and is an excellent source of calcium. Kale’s unique properties help bind to cholesterol and lower oxalate levels, which promotes calcium absorption and makes it suitable for those prone to kidney stones. Additionally, it provides eye health benefits, thanks to lutein, and its disease-fighting properties make it a great addition to salads, smoothies, and more.

ARTICHOKES:

Artichokes are not only delicious but also packed with fiber, which aids in digestion. They are a great source of plant protein, potassium, and antioxidants like polyphenols. Artichokes also provide essential nutrients, including vitamins C, K, folate, magnesium, and B vitamins.

ASPARAGUS:

Asparagus is versatile and can be enjoyed grilled, sautéed, baked, or even raw. Packed with vitamins C, E, B, K, folate, and copper, it’s a great source of fiber. It also helps lower cholesterol and provides a variety of antioxidants that aid in healing. Asparagus is a perfect side dish that complements both light and robustly flavored meals.

SPINACH:

Spinach is a popular green known for its mild flavor and impressive nutritional profile. Rich in vitamins A, C, K, as well as magnesium, potassium, and iron, spinach is great for overall health. It also provides antioxidants that support eye health and includes calcium for stronger bones. However, because spinach has a higher oxalate content, it should be consumed in moderation by those with a history of kidney stones.
