Investing in Your Future, Your Community, and the World Around You

As we enter the spring season, it’s a time for renewal— whether it’s sprucing up our homes, planning for the future, or enjoying the vibrant experiences Maryland has to offer. Spring break is the perfect opportunity to invest time in exploring local destinations, from the Porsche Studio in Bethesda, where car enthusiasts can dream of luxury, to Competizione & Sports Cars in Gaithersburg, where performance and passion meet in high-end automo biles. These destinations remind us that investing isn’t just about assets; it’s about enjoying the fruits of our hard work.

But investment goes beyond the tangible, and that’s where estate planning comes into play. Estate planning is an essential tool for safeguarding your financial future and ensuring that your assets are distributed according to your wishes. Just as you carefully choose which cars to purchase or which community to support, planning ahead allows you to protect those you care about for generations to come. It’s an investment that ensures stability, peace of mind, and a lasting legacy.

In tandem with planning for the future, it’s important to consider the world we leave behind. As we think about assets and property, we must also think about sustainability and the long-term health of our planet. Recycling, reducing waste, and supporting eco-conscious businesses are small but impactful investments that benefit both our local communities and the environment.

As we celebrate holidays like Passover and Easter, surrounded by family and friends, it’s a good reminder to invest in what truly matters—community, values, and relationships. Enjoying springtime in Maryland, whether it’s hiking, exploring local attractions, or spending time with loved ones, is another way we enrich our lives and our community.

This spring, let’s commit to thoughtful investments that help us grow as individuals and as members of a broader world. Whether it’s protecting your assets through estate planning, supporting local businesses, or simply being mindful of your surroundings, every action counts.

Passover

Local Restaurants that can Help You Celebrate the Holiday

Passover traditions hold deep significance in Jewish culture, as they commemorate the Exodus of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. The rituals, such as the Seder meal and the reading of the Haggadah, serve as a way to retell the story of freedom and deliverance. These traditions connect generations, passing down history, faith, and values.

Call Your Mother Deli 1

Call Your Mother Deli puts a modern twist on classic Jewish deli fare, and their Passover menu is no exception. Their Matzo Ball Soup, with a comforting, aromatic broth and fluffy matzo balls, is a must-try. This staple of Passover cuisine gets a contemporary upgrade with a slightly herbed, perfectly seasoned broth that enhances the traditional dish. Whether before or during the Seder, it’s a delicious option to savor during the holiday.

The

Kosher

Pastry Oven Inc

The Kosher Pastry Oven Inc is a family-owned kosher bakery that has long been a beloved part of the Jewish community. During Passover, their handmade pastries shine, especially their Passover Mandelbrot, a traditional Jewish almond biscuit with a perfect balance of crunchy and sweet. Its delicate texture and rich flavor make it an ideal treat after a Seder or with a cup of tea. Pastry Oven Inc captures the essence of Jewish tradition, offering the perfect bite of tradition with each pastry.

Mandelbrot

The symbolic foods on the Seder plate—like matzah, bitter herbs, and charoset—remind participants of the hardships endured and the joy of liberation. Through these practices, Passover serves as a powerful reminder of resilience, hope, and the importance of family and community.

As Passover approaches, those in Potomac, Bethesda, Chevy Chase and beyond can find several exceptional restaurants offering a variety of delicious dishes to celebrate the holiday. These local spots feature both traditional and creative options to enhance your Passover experience.

The Kosher Pastry Oven Inc, a family-owned kosher bakery, is a cherished local institution known for its commitment to quality. Their dedication to tradition and community makes them a reliable choice for holiday catering and takeout. PORSCHE STUDIO OPENS IN CHEVY CHASE

A Unique Automotive Experience Welcomes Owners and Fans of the Iconic Brand

With its contemporary interior design, walls covered in vintage racing photos, and a clubby, laid-back atmosphere, the recently opened Porsche Studio on Wisconsin Avenue in Friendship Heights is more an homage to the iconic automotive brand than a traditional showroom.

Affiliated with the full-service Porsche Bethesda dealership in nearby Pike & Rose, this unique conceptual space, located among the upscale shops and restaurants in The Collection at Chevy Chase, provides Porsche owners, enthusiasts, and the merely curious with a rare opportunity to engage with the brand in a warm and inviting environment that is in many ways a departure from the traditional dealership experience.

Opened to the public in September the owners envision a space where visitors feel welcome to stop in, admire the cars, shop for Porsche-branded gear and apparel, and generally immerse themselves in the brand. “It’s a place where

people can come and have a coffee and read a book or do some work,” says Nick Gittings, one of two “Porsche Pros” who oversee day-to-day operations. “It’s a very inviting space.”

Guests are encouraged to make themselves at home. There’s a barista serving premium coffee, and comfortable seating fills the space. A curated selection of coffee-table books invites visitors to sink into one of the comfy chairs, sip their latte, and peruse.

And, of course, there are cars! While not a typical showroom—no more than three cars are on display at any given time—guests can still admire vehicles up close, sit inside, and imagine themselves cruising down the Autobahn (or Georgetown Pike).

On the day we visited, a sleek 2025 base model 911 Carerra in Cartagena yellow metallic was positioned near

“Porsche 718 Spyder RS becomes the pinnacle of the mid-engined family. Thirty years after the presentation of the Boxster concept car, Porsche is launching the most powerful version yet of the popular mid-engined roadster: the new Porsche 718 Spyder RS (718 Spyder RS: Fuel consumption* combined (WLTP) 12,7 l/100 km, CO₂ emissions* combined (WLTP) 288 g/km, CO₂ class G ).”

the window, luring passersby to stop and take a closer look. Nearby, an all-electric 2025 Taycan in a more subdued hue fought for attention.

At the rear of the Studio, a custom-built Spyder RS convertible—recently delivered from Stuttgart and on loan by its owner—is on display. “People come in with their kids and they love looking at the cars together,” says Gittings as he welcomes a young father pushing a stroller. “It’s just a very inviting space.”

Conveniently located mid-way between downtown DC and the main dealership in North Bethesda, the Porsche Studio is an attractive option where customers can meet with a brand ambassador (aka, salesperson), arrange for a test-drive, and finalize paperwork. Those customizing their dream car can explore paint samples and interior finishes before placing a final order. Buyers can take delivery of their car either at the dealership or, among family and friends, at the Studio.

The vision is that Porsche Studio Chevy Chase will regularly host community events, private parties, and business gatherings. The 3,800-square-foot space can accommodate up to 100 guests—more in warmer months when oversized doors can be swung open allowing the festivities to spill out onto the street.

Gittings and his colleague, Damaris Alvarez, have been experimenting with events like pilates and yoga classes, and there are plans for whiskey tastings and other collaborations with local businesses. A rotating exhibition showcases the works of local artists. “We are throwing things at the wall and seeing what sticks,” says Porsche Brand Ambassador Dexter Jay. “We are always looking for feedback from our friends, asking ‘what did you like? How could we make it better?’”

With excitement mounting around the grand opening in March, and the possibilities for how to fully utilize the space gradually coming into focus, Gittings and Alvarez exude a visible sense of pride. “This is very much a community space,” says Gittings. “Just having a good place where people feel comfortable coming in and approaching the brand and learning more about, it’s all we could really ask for.”

Lesley A. Moss, ESTATE PLANNER

1. TRUSTS

Lesley Moss has been practicing estate law for twenty years at Oram & Moss in Rockville and was voted Potomac Lifestyle’s “Best Estate Planner” for two years in a row. “As an estate attorney,” she notes, “my job is to help my clients structure, whether through trusts, wills, prenups, gifting or documents that will allow their children to thrive and offer protection and the efficient transfer of assets from a tax and/or administrative standpoint.”

Estate planning can include:

According to Moss, “When we talk about doing estate planning we are always talking about where do you want these assets to go? For most families that is done by making sure we protect the immediate family, the family unit.” She adds, “One of the ways we offer protection is by creating trusts so that the children are inheriting inside a trust and the trust itself will protect an heir from a divorce or creditors.” She explains that “The trust ensures that the child has access to his or her inheritance for the rest of their life but when they pass away it will go to their grandchildren.”

Why estate planning is so important for you and your family

2. PRENUPTIAL AND POSTNUPTIAL AGREEMENTS

Moss acknowledges that encouraging one’s children to consider a prenuptial or postnuptial agreement can be a sensitive issue, but it’s another way to safeguard their inheritance. It can pertain to a couplegetting married where one partner’s parents have assisted in the acquisition of the primary residence and the child decides to include their spouse’s name on the primary residence. For the child already married, a postnuptial agreement can be executed to provide clear legal protection for inherited assets. “Working with our clients we have to decide what is going to happen to those assets if a client has a spouse pass away or in the event of a divorce.” Although trusts offer a lot of protection, there is still the right of a surviving spouse to claim against the estate. Every state has a different spousal election so the prenup is important to assure that the wealth he or she built with their first spouse goes to their kids. And whether forming a prenup or a postnup, both sides need to have their own attorneys. A prenup can also apply to a family business, differentiation between what is my equity in the family business versus what are my earnings. Business success planning is a whole other aspect when one or two siblings are in the family business and others who are not, but everyone in the family owns the business.

3. TAX PLANNING

Moss states that she is very much a tax-focused law firm. She holds that trusts offer protection not only in the event of remarriage but also from taxation. “With a trust you get the benefit of the estate tax planning at both the federal and Maryland level while ensuring that you are ultimately protecting your children to inherit these assets someday. In addition, the trust can have creditor protection as well.”

4. GIFTING

Some people use gifts to their children as part of a larger estate planning strategy to protect assets, but they must be mindful that if they leave assets to children when they are not mature enough to use them wisely, it can be a mistake. An estate planner can help parents discern where their children are in their current life stage. Something to also consider, especially for high-net-worth families, is the idea of gifting now to grandfather in their exemption, as estate tax laws are constantly changing. Moss admits that her job is not always easy and she sometimes finds herself playing the part of mediating family issues and personalities. Ultimately, she says that “What I do allows me to become part of a client’s family, and to me that is the most rewarding aspect of what this area of the practice of law is.”

HELP SAVE THE Chesapeake Watershed

OVER 60 MCPS STUDENT VOLUNTEERS ARE SPREADING THE WORD TO REDUCE, REUSE, AND RECYCLE PLASTIC

Outreach event at Rockville Science Day
Club leaders host a plastic recycling outreach event at North Potomac Community Center

CAPA-MC Growing & Giving Club (G&G) is a youth-led initiative associated with the  Chinese American Parent Association of Montgomery County (CAPA-MC). This club  was formed by middle and high school students in Maryland's Montgomery County  Public School System (MCPS.) These students are passionate about healthy living and  environmental protection.

PLASTIC POLLUTION IS A BIG PROBLEM!

According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the  average United States citizen generates around 487 pounds of plastic waste each year.  Since plastic bags and films are not typically included in Maryland’s recycling system they contribute significantly to this problem.

Nowadays, microplastics are everywhere: in the ocean, in local watersheds, in sea  creatures, and even in the human body. Many students are concerned about this issue  and seeking positive change.

BE A ZERO HERO PROJECT

When in 10th grade, Kenneth Shue initiated this project in January 2023. Many G&G club members have joined the Zero Hero plastic recycling team. The team  aims to reduce plastic film waste and keep it out of the Chesapeake watershed. The project has three  main components:

1.  Educating the community about plastic pollution and appropriate recycling

2.   Taking action to collect plastic film

3.   Advocating for systemic change

Kenneth has led the team to design many promotional materials for educational purposes. The materials show the public what types of plastic bags and films can be recycled, that include grocery bags, bread bags, plastic wrapping around paper towels and toilet paper, dry cleaning bags, plastic shipping envelopes, bubble wrap, and  air pillows used in packaging, etc. So far, students have hosted over 50 outreach events and reached over 7,000 people in  the community. They have distributed the student-designed promotional materials and family recycling kits to the public at the events, and given workshops on how to recycle plastic films.

WHERE TO DROP OFF PLASTIC FILM

It's important to note that these items typically can't go in curbside recycling bins.  Instead, they should be taken to specific collection points. The Zero Hero team has identified the following drop-off locations for plastic film recycling: Giant, Food Lion, Kohl's, Safeway™, Harris Teeter, and Goodwill.

In addition to these commercial locations, the club has set up over 20 plastic film recycling bins in the MCPS central office building, CCACC community centers, some senior centers, local Manna food banks, and Chinese language schools. Each recycling location has one or two student recycling ambassadors to manage the bins.

A recent piece of good news is that the Montgomery Recycling Center (16105 Frederick  Road, Derwood, MD 20855) has started accepting recyclable plastic bags and films. The public can now drop off their recycled plastic there.

Since January 2023, the team and many student volunteershave collected over 2,000 pounds of plastic bags and films. The plastic is donated to NexTrex, a manufacturer

of wood-alternative composite decking and  outdoor living products. NexTrex has recycling locations all over the country; a full list can be found on its website at https://nextrex.com/ view/findadropoff. In recognition of the Be a Zero Hero team’s efforts, the club received two benches made of recycled plastic  from NexTrex.

Recognizing that individual efforts have limits, the zero hero team pursues advocacy to amplify their impact and drive systemic change through policymaking, enabling greater progress against plastic pollution.  In September 2024, three of the team leaders testified before the MCPS Board of Education to propose the implementation of the "Be a Zero Hero" program in all MCPS schools. Additionally, in January 2025, they testified in front of the Montgomery County Council in support of the "Bring Your Own Bag" bill, which aims to ban single-use plastic bags in commercial stores and promote the use of paper bags with a small tax, with proceeds funding environmental protection initiatives.

STUDENTS ARE LEARNING VALUABLE LEADERSHIP SKILLS

Students are engaged! Over 100 volunteers, primarily middle and high school students  from MCPS, have participated in the project. This has provided valuable leadership and  environmental stewardship opportunities for young people.

In Maryland, students must complete 75 SSL hours to graduate. But students are  encouraged to earn more. This can benefit them in various ways, including scholarship opportunities and personal growth.

JOIN IN THE PLASTIC RECYCLING EFFORT

This project demonstrates how youth-led initiatives can make a significant impact on environmental issues in their local community. Any middle or high school student in MCPS is welcome to join the club. The "Be a Zero  Hero" team is expanding the program to bring system-wide recycling to MCPS. The adult mentor of the project and MCPS provides SSL recognition to the volunteer students.

A special thanks goes to the project sponsors, the Chesapeake Bay Trust and the  Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection. Also, to the president of MCPS Board of Education, Ms. Julie Yang, and the MCPS Sustainability and Compliance  Department Recycling Manager, Mr. John Meyer, for their encouragement, strong  support, and guidance.

MAKING AN IMPACT

The club's goal is to "Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle" plastic so as to protect our beautiful  watershed and promote healthier living.

By combining education, action, and advocacy, the "Be a Zero Hero"  project has made a tangible impact on reducing plastic waste and raising environmental  awareness in Montgomery County.

For more information on recycling, or if you're a middle or high school student in schools  within Montgomery County interested in joining their cause, contact the students at  TheZeroHeroTeam@gmail.com

GREENS INVEST IN YOUR

DANDELION GREENS:

Dandelion greens are a nutritious and easy addition to any meal, perfect for salads or cooked dishes. They are rich in vitamins A, C, K, chlorophyll, and fiber, making them a great choice for digestion and overall health. Their light flavor and texture enhance salads and sandwiches.

BROCCOLI:

Broccoli is often hailed as a nutritional powerhouse, packed with a variety of vitamins and minerals that support overall health. Known for being high in vitamins A, C, and K, it also contains important minerals like potassium, iron, and calcium. In addition, it’s a rich source of beta-carotene, flavonoids, and fiber. Whether raw or cooked, broccoli is an excellent choice for immune system support, making it one of the most nutrient-dense vegetables available.

KALE:

Kale is loaded with essential nutrients such as vitamins C, B6, E, K, and manganese. It contains twice as much selenium as spinach and is an excellent source of calcium. Kale’s unique properties help bind to cholesterol and lower oxalate levels, which promotes calcium absorption and makes it suitable for those prone to kidney stones. Additionally, it provides eye health benefits, thanks to lutein, and its disease-fighting properties make it a great addition to salads, smoothies, and more.

Boost your health by adding a generous serving of fresh greens to your daily diet. While both cooked and raw vegetables offer health benefits, consuming them raw often provides the most nutrients. Raw greens are rich in fiber, antioxidants, and essential vitamins, helping to lower inflammation and reduce the risk of disease.

ARTICHOKES:

Artichokes are not only delicious but also packed with fiber, which aids in digestion. They are a great source of plant protein, potassium, and antioxidants like polyphenols. Artichokes also provide essential nutrients, including vitamins C, K, folate, magnesium, and B vitamins.

ASPARAGUS:

Asparagus is versatile and can be enjoyed grilled, sautéed, baked, or even raw. Packed with vitamins C, E, B, K, folate, and copper, it’s a great source of fiber. It also helps lower cholesterol and provides a variety of antioxidants that aid in healing. Asparagus is a perfect side dish that complements both light and robustly flavored meals.

SPINACH:

Spinach is a popular green known for its mild flavor and impressive nutritional profile. Rich in vitamins A, C, K, as well as magnesium, potassium, and iron, spinach is great for overall health. It also provides antioxidants that support eye health and includes calcium for stronger bones. However, because spinach has a higher oxalate content, it should be consumed in moderation by those with a history of kidney stones.

BRUSSELS SPROUTS:

Brussels sprouts are a highly nutritious cruciferous vegetable, known for their vitamin C, K, and folate content, as well as carotenoids and fiber. These vegetables can be shaved, sliced, sautéed, boiled, or grilled, offering a range of flavors from mild to bitter, depending on preparation.
