The Magic of Holiday Giving

The Moton Legacy Enhances Christmas with Heatfelt Philanthropy
Every year, Tatiana Moton dedicates her December birthday to spearheading a heartwarming initiative that brings joy to hundreds of children and families in need. She believes that passing along an abundance of love, joy, hope, and goodwill is the true meaning of the holiday season.
Tatiana and her husband Jerrod are the founders of The Moton Family Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Potomac, MD. The foundation is committed to serving children and families in need through charitable giving initiatives and social advocacy. They receive gifts through The Moton's Annual Holiday Toy Drive.
By working with local shelters, hospitals, social services, and community organizations, the foundation is able to identify families most in need to ensure that they're not forgotten, but remembered with gift donations to help make their holidays merry and bright. Their goal is to empower and inspire better outcomes for future generations.
“At the heart of our family’s foundation is an unwavering commitment to serving our community, building a brighter future for all children and families to thrive, and illuminating a path forward to uplift humanity,” said Tatiana.
What started as a small, local effort has become a beloved community tradition. During the pandemic in 2020, the Motons recognized the urgent need for resources in a time of unprecedented uncertainty. They launched their foundation as a way to answer the call to provide critical support, compassion, and hope to communities across the Washington, D.C. metropolitan region who were most impacted by the pandemic.
In December 2023, they donated toys to San Mar Family and Community Services, a local foster care treatment program. “The Moton Family Foundation put on a firstclass event and provided more than 300 gifts to support the kids and families we serve, and to give them a better and brighter holiday season,” said San Mar CEO Keith Fanjoy. “We were honored to be included as beneficiaries of their annual holiday toy drive and share in their generosity and kindness for others in need.”

“In every act of love and generosity, we plant seeds of hope, nurture the dreams of children and families, become stewards for miracles, and help make the world a better, brighter place for all.”
- Tatiana Moton
This December marks foundation’s 4th Annual Holiday Toy Drive. The Foundation is proud to partner with Porsche of Bethesda to bring holiday gifts, hope, and cheer to this year’s beneficiary.
“We take great pride in closing out the year by giving back to children and families who are the most in need,” said Jerrod. “When we use our resources to uplift others, we create a ripple of hope that extends far beyond ourselves, building a legacy that can change the world."
This dedicated entrepreneurs are adept at juggling work and home. Tatiana is the founder and CEO of Capital Collective, a top integrated marketing and public relations agency that represents professional athletes, celebrities, brands, corporations, and non-profit organizations. Jerrod is the CEO of Goldman Edwards, a federal consulting IT contract company focused on technology for government agencies.
“Giving to our community makes the season so bright,” Tatiana said. “In every act of love and generosity, we plant seeds of hope, nurture the dreams of children and families, become stewards for miracles, and help make the world a better, brighter place for all."
“We feel blessed that our family is in a position to do this,” Jerrod added. “We stand on the great shoulders of people who are pillars in our lives and have paved the way, and it is our responsibility to lift up the next generation and pay it forward.”
The couple's charitable giving is based on the core values they want to instill in their two children; Jonah, 9, and, Trinity, 5, who they anticipate will carry the torch of service to their community.
As the holiday season approaches, hundreds of children will experience the joy of receiving holiday gifts. And for the Moton family, the joy of giving is the greatest gift of all.

A Touch of Class
ARTICLE BY DEBRA WALLACE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY NINA RICHARDS
“Taking a few bold risks is where great design happens because it creates focal points, and 80 percent of our senses are experienced through vision.” -Isabel Jackson
Isabel “Isy” Jackson’s creativity has been enhanced by her rich family history, which appears to be a bit out of a scene from Downton Abbey, the popular British drama series.
With several formidable family mentors who have inspired her over the years, Jackson’s path as an experienced third-generation designer is a major part of her family legacy.
Her company, Cheltenham Interiors, is a boutique studio serving clients throughout the D.C. metro area and beyond. Jackson is also noteworthy for winning Best Interior Designer in the 2024 Best of Potomac Readers’ Choice Awards.
Jackson’s maternal grandmother Marjorie Delany, or "Nana," worked with the time-honored Wedgewood China company, and the future designer first captured her creative side when she lived with Nana from ages three to seven.
“My Nana and I spent hours working on our dollhouses, scrapbooking, drawing, and taking photographs. My mom flipped 21 homes and cottages in the Cotswolds,” Jackson said. “I learned a great deal from watching her designing magic.”
The impressive education and exposure ignited her passion for interior design and intricate decorating.
“I understand firsthand how a renovation can strain relationships; my parents underwent a major remodel when I was young and it took a toll on their marriage,” she said. “This experience has taught me the importance of creating a harmonious environment throughout the process.”
Her paternal uncle, Brigadier John Wright, founded the Tidworth Polo Club, and her pilot father, Robert Wright, had his dreams literally take flight when he used all of his assets to start his own airline, Connectair, which he eventually sold to Air Europe and later to British Airways – all helping to cement her entrepreneurial spirit.
Jackson’s multicultural exposure combined with her prior residencies in Italy and Dubai have helped inspire her diverse aesthetics. They contribute to her ability to craft breathtaking personalized one-of-a-kind living spaces that evoke both joy and unique narratives.
She is also passionate about blending traditional and modern design styles, including traditional with midcentury, art deco, bohemian, coastal, and minimalist modern.
Christmas is Jackson’s favorite holiday to spend with her husband, three young sons, (ages 4, 6, and, 9), and extended family, and as such she loves all of the holiday decorating rituals that come along with it.
“For the Christmas holiday, I love to make a lovely entryway with a welcoming table with skirts and a custom cut glass top, a fireplace mantle or stairway with garland, and a dining room table setting with Wedgewood or another quality fine china. My Nana would be singing with pleasure to see this come to life.”
To get even more inspiration for her design projects, she visits Leesburg’s Old Luckett’s Store, which has vintage country farmhouse rooms, with an explosion of indoor and outdoor Christmas decor. This time of year, she also visits The Mid-Atlantic Antiques Festival in Poolesville, MD.
Jackson enjoys both big and small projects, from helping clients decorate their beach homes and rentals with fabrics, wall coverings, upholstery, and draperies, to a large project at a Beaux-Arts Mansion or a gorgeous Italian villa.
Her best advice for small and large-scale projects is the same. “Taking a few bold risks is where great design happens because it creates focal points, and 80 percent of our senses are experienced through vision,” she explained. “It is also important to prioritize communication about sentimental pieces and family heirlooms.”
Jackson’s dream job combines her passion for design with her use of modern aesthetics.
“This means featuring Italian contemporary furniture and modern art, or embracing traditional British style with antiques and beautiful fabrics, trims, rugs, and wall coverings and adding modern art to create a glorious juxtaposition,” she explained.
“I love creating spaces that reflect my clients’ personalities." Jackson said, “while ensuring a positive and enjoyable renovation experience.”
For additional information, please visit Cheltenham-Interiors.com or call (202) 999-9910.
I love creating spaces that reflect my clients’ personalities.

OYOUSFAMILY CHA NUKAHTRADITION
My paternal grandmother, Ida Wallace, who kept kosher and attended an Orthodox synagogue said if she could not be Jewish for one day of the year it would be Christmas.
Grandma Ida loved the Jewish holidays and traditions and would never have converted to another religion, but she had a child-like spirit when it came to the lights, decorations, and splendor of Christmas.
When I was growing up in suburban Chicago, my parents had many non-Jewish friends, so the entire family, including Grandma, would head to the ornately decorated Candy Cane Lane, Santa Claus Lane, and Christmas Tree Lane for joyous parties. We enjoyed the lavish buffet. We always skipped the ham, and my dad would joke that he preferred the corned beef. Grandma was delighted with the decorations and thoughtful gifts that our hosts provided each guest.
It may have been 20 degrees outside, (after all, it was Chicago in the dead of winter), but it was warm and cozy inside, with the children sipping hot cocoa with mounds of marshmallows and the adults enjoying hot cider, probably with a little splash of liquor.

Family Chanukah with Friends and Family
ARTICLE BY DEBRA WALLACE
WriterandContributor
Debra WallaceandSon
Being the youngest of three daughters, I was spoiled. I received eight presents, a big one for the first night and seven for the rest of the nights of Chanukah. This is a tradition I continued with my son, Adam, who is now 18 years old.
Adam agrees with Grandma about the beauty of Christmas, but he has also embraced his love for Chanukah traditions of family togetherness, and all of the presents.
I don’t remember many of the presents, but I do recall my loving mother, Marilyn, taking a big bowl of potatoes and onions and turning them into mouth-watering latkes – served with sour cream and applesauce.
We relished the holiday foods. I have fond local memories of heading to Attman's Deli, first in Baltimore, and later in Park Potomac for their delicious latkes, corned beef to pile high on their crusty rye bread, and numerous side dishes.
Every Chanukah, my late husband, Harry Forman, would light up like a child seeing the wrapped presents. He started menorah and dreidel collections, and when I light the candles each year, I rotate his many menorahs –some simple and some made of fragile crystal.
I always light two menorahs on each night of his favorite holiday, including the one he made with his own hands at summer camp. It is extremely special to my son and me. The dreidels are all different and beautiful. When I look at them, I see my husband’s eyes growing wide with holiday excitement.
Today, I continue my mother’s tradition, as I have since Adam was a young child. I host a Chanukah open house for our friends and serve my homemade latkes, (made with a food processor instead of a hand-grater), turkey, brisket, fried doughnuts, and half a dozen tasty side dishes. It's something we look forward to every year.
Chanukah, like many Jewish holidays, is about family, prayer, and traditions. So, whether or not you celebrate Chanukah, Christmas, or any other holiday during the winter nights, don’t forget to spice it up with family traditions, beloved dishes or desserts from your mom or grandma’s favorite recipes, and bask in the glow of family and friends. For me, that’s what makes Chanukah special, and what the holidays will always be about!

What’s behind the meteoric rise in popularity of a tile-based game that has recently taken so many busy Americans by storm? It’s mahjong, a game originally created in China more than 200 years ago. It quickly became very popular when it was introduced in America in the 1920s. Today, it has been rediscovered by many women of all ages throughout the country. Mahjong is a four-player game of luck and skill that calls for concentration and competition, building community along
the way. Its colorful tiles display Chinese icons visible in suits, named bam, crak, dot, jokers, dragons, and flowers. There are several versions of play around the world, all slightly different. The goal of the American version is to match 14 tiles with one of the patterns on an official National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) Hands and Rules card which is reissued every year. Molly Hugo of Potomac started playing mahjong four years ago when a friend invited her to take lessons. It didn’t take
Mahjong Mania Is Sweeping the Country
long for Molly to become, in her words, “hooked.” She echoes many young women who see playing mahjong as a lovely way to make intergenerational connections, enjoy conversation and snacks and keep one’s brain busy. She decided to advance her passion and become an instructor affiliated with Oh My Mahjong and registered her own LLC, MoCoMahjong - mocomahjong@gmail.com. Now Molly is busy teaching mahjong three or four nights a week.
If you are interested in learning more, email Molly at mocomahjong@gmail.com
Facts About Mahjong:
• Mahjong, mah-jong, majong or mahjongg? All these spellings are correct, depending on how you translate it from Chinese
• The word mahjong means sparrow in Chinese. The clacking of mahjong tiles during shuffling resembles bird chattering.
• Playing mahjong is a great way to socialize and make new friends.
• Experts say that playing mahjong on a regular basis can help develop cognitive skills and even help fight Alzheimer’s.
• Mahjong can be played online as well as in person. One example of an online game is “I Love Mahj”, https://ilovemahj.com.

The traditional Swedish smörgåsbord is served with various hot and mainly cold dishes. It's a multi-course buffet meal that features a wide array of dishes. The meal is eaten in distinct phases or courses, each with its own type of food.
Each course is meant to be savored gradually, with diners taking small portions from each round. It's a highly social dining experience. Here are the six classic phases of a smörgåsbord you can leisurely partake in with friends:
1. Herring (Sill) Course: The meal starts with different varieties of herring, often pickled or marinated in sauces like mustard or dill. Hard-boiled eggs, crispbread, and boiled potatoes may accompany this course.
2. Cold Fish Course: After herring, other cold fish dishes are served, such as gravlax (cured salmon), smoked salmon, or eel. These are often paired with sauces like mustard-dill and accompanied by bread.
3. Cold Meats Course: The third course features cold meats like ham, pâté, liverwurst, smoked sausages, and other charcuterie, along with accompaniments like pickles and mustard.
4. Hot Dishes Course: Warm dishes are introduced next, including Swedish meatballs (köttbullar), small sausages, Jansson's Temptation (a potato and anchovy casserole), and other hearty foods. Potatoes and vegetables are served as sides.
5. Cheese Course: The cheese course includes a selection of Swedish cheeses served with crispbread or dark bread. Sometimes fruit, like grapes or figs, may accompany this course.
6. Dessert and Coffee: The Smörgåsbord concludes with dessert, often featuring cakes, cookies, or
sweet pastries, along with coffee or tea. Akvavit (or aquavit) is a distilled spirit principally produced in Scandinavia. One tradition is to sip akvavit between each of the six courses.
SILL (HERRING)
The Swedish word “sill” translates to herring in English. Herring is a small, edible fish found in the North and Baltic Seas. VITA says their wild caught herring from the North Atlantic continues to have the same great taste from when the company was founded in 1898. This and other herring brands are available in most grocery stores.
LINGONBERRIES
Lingonberries are a "superfruit" high in Vitamin C that have a variety of health benefits. They are best grown in Scandinavian countries like Sweden and the upper reaches of North America in Canada.
In English, the lingonberry is known by several other names, such as cowberry, moss cranberry, mountain cranberry, partridgeberry, red whortleberry, alpine cranberry, lingon and lingen.
For Scandinavians, lingonberries go with almost anything. All year long, Swedes eat lingonberries with foods including meatballs, chicken, turkey, and pancakes. Sylt Lingon is available at IKEA (sylt is the Swedish word for jam). Köttbullar and mashed potatoes are often served with lingonberries. They go well with pancakes, too.
As you enter the IKEA College Park location, make an immediate left and go down the long hallway. That will take you to the Scandinavian food section.

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”
As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.
Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.
One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.
Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.
These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just
about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”
We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.
To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.
The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.com

Holiday Entertaining Boards
The holidays are here and entertaining is in full swing. If you are looking for the perfect appetizer to easily feed a crowd these simple and beautiful boards are sure to please.
ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
Tips for creating the perfect board:
• Start with the larger items first and build around those. If you are using jars on the board, place those first.
• Be sure to have enough to fill the space. It is best to overfill so that the board doesn’t look sparse. Stack, stack and stack some more.
• Use a variety of colors and textures when choosing the foods you want to use. Pick cheese with color and patterns, fruits and veggies that come in a variety of textures and colors and a protein that can make a statement.
• Be sure to place similar colors in away from each other to help give symmetry.
Holiday Wreath Charcuterie Board
• Fig Jelly
• Honey
• Variety of Cheeses
• Salami or meat of choice
• Olives (provide a variety)
• Walnuts, Pecans, Pistachios and any favorite nut
• Grapes, berries, persimmon
• Crackers
Place the jars of sauces and olives on the board first. Next place the cheeses on opposing sides. Add meats and fruits next. Layer in crackers, nuts and seeds and fill in any spots with extra nuts. Use fresh rosemary or fresh greenery to add wreath accent in the center of the charcuterie board. Garnish with fresh cranberries.
