In our exploration of love, Patti Stanger, The Millionaire Matchmaker, and The Golden Bachelorette inspire us to see love as an adventure. Their stories prove it’s never too late for new beginnings or meaningful connections.

For food enthusiasts, ON St. Elmo in Bethesda brings a fresh perspective to dining with its innovative dishes and vibrant atmosphere. This culinary hotspot offers a sensory journey that reflects the evolving local food scene.

The innocence of love shines through in Valentines by Kids, where children craft heartfelt messages and artwork. These sweet expressions remind us of the simple joy found in acts of kindness.

Education takes the spotlight as we delve into the legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Their impact resonates through generations, fostering opportunity and cultural pride.

Personal growth is a recurring theme, with Coach Lala’s Mastery of the Mind Mentality offering tools to build resilience and mental clarity. His insights encourage us to navigate life’s challenges with confidence and purpose.

Lastly, 50 After 50 inspires readers to live boldly, showing that dreams and adventures have no age limit. It’s a powerful reminder that the best chapters of life may still lie ahead.

This month’s stories celebrate the love, ambition, and community spirit that define Potomac. Together, let’s embrace opportunities to connect, grow, and thrive in the place we’re proud to call home.

2025— The Laws Are Changing

As we enter 2025, and we experience a change in the White House, there is a need to remain focused on changes in the law as it impacts your existing estate planning.

Currently, the Federal Estate Tax Exemption expires on December 31, 2025, but the incoming administration has expressed its intention to extend the current exemption levels. Any change on the expiration of the exemption requires an act of Congress. The annual gift tax exemption increased on January 1, 2025, to $19,000 per recipient. The applicable Federal Estate Tax Exemption for 2025 is $13,990,000.

2025 marks the 40th Anniversary of our firm. We are proud to continue to grow with our practice dedicated to assisting our clients with their estate planning and estate and trust administration.

Coach Lala teaches Student Athletes Life Skills

The Mastery of

the Mind Mentality

When it comes to athletics, young people are taught to leave it all on the field, but Coach Joe LaPietra wants the opposite. He sees kids showing so much grit in sports, and he wants them to show up in other parts of their lives with the same determination, confidence, and spirit.

In his incredibly successful Mastery of the Mind (MOTM) courses, Coach “LaLa” doesn’t teach motivation. He teaches skills and lets the motivation come from within. He says, “These kids already have the seeds in their athletics, so we translate that into the rest of life.” The MOTM program focuses on developing human and emotional intelligence by teaching real-life tools and skills.

So, what are these skills? MOTM is an amalgamation of a lifetime of learning for Coach LaLa. Beginning as a quarterback and captain of the football team at Franklin & Marshall College, he continued with a successful career in financial services, where his management style boiled down to “don’t build a business, build a system and let the system build the business.” When he retired, he realized he had more to do, and he developed MOTM to share his experience and know-how with students.

MOTM is a series of modules covering everything from public speaking to personal finance and more. He includes lessons in manners, coping mechanisms, and setting boundaries. His philosophy is simple: LaLaLearn, Adapt, Lead, Achieve.

The program has been offered in 14 schools to over 1,500 students. MOTM encourages students to “get real,” allowing their shared vulnerability to be a starting place for growth. From the very first module, the students share and learn from one another, realizing that they are not alone in their challenges. The lessons of the program reverberate in success on the playing field. Coach LaLa says he sees “Teams bond and students grow.” MOTM has the full support of the athletic coaches who see the transformative impact, building students into stronger athletes and better people.

The program's true success is measured in the engagement, attendance, and bonding exhibited by the kids. “Those are the best testimonials,” says Coach LaLa. MOTM is a 501(c)(3) organization. Coach LaLa lives in Potomac and is actively seeking new schools to participate in the program in the DC area and beyond. More information can be found at www.motmusa.org

50 After 50: Reframing Your Next Chapter

INSPIRING IDEAS FOR LIVING

YOUR BEST LIFE AFTER AGE 50

For most of us, reaching age 50 is a milestone to be celebrated and enjoyed with family and friends. We’ve built careers, gotten married, raised families, accomplished many of the things we set out to do. But it can also be a time of reflection and introspection, of asking ourselves what’s next over the next 50 years, or whatever time we have left in this life.

For Maryland native Maria Leonard Olsen, the question of how to celebrate her 50th birthday evolved into an enlightening book called “50 After 50: Reframing the Next Chapter of Your Life,” which became a catalyst for change for her that she hopes will spark inspiration in others as well.

At age 50, Olsen became an empty nester, re-entered the workforce after being a stay-at-home mom, got divorced, got sober, and finally decided to start living a life that was authentic to her.

“I set off at age 50 to find myself after willingly giving so much of myself to my family,” says Olsen when asked about the inspiration for the book, which actually began as a list of new things she wanted to try to help determine who she really was and what cultivated joy for her.

“In trying 50 new things, I learned more about myself than perhaps I’d learned in the first 50 years. By sharing my experience, I want to shine a spotlight on what women can do and learn in this important chapter of our lives. While some of the things I did in my 50th year are things that probably no one else would want to do, the point of the book is if you don’t like something about your life you have the power to change it,” she stresses.

Olsen’s experiences are highlighted in each chapter of the book, including travel and adventure, learning and teaching, social activities, physical challenges and well-being, spiritual endeavors, thrill-seeking adventures,

and lifestyle changes. From hiking in the Himalayas to volunteering at local schools in Nepal, working at a bookstore in Washington, D.C., daring to date again, learning how to drive a motorcycle, and discovering how to slow down through yoga, meditation, retreats and other spiritual endeavors, she explains how she was able to learn more about herself and who she hopes to become.

“This journey has changed me profoundly,” says Olsen. “Overall, it was an exercise in cultivating gratitude for all that I had as opposed to all that I had lost. I found the silver linings in my life and realized that no one is responsible for my happiness but me. I’ve changed so many things about my life and in doing so discovered contentedness and serenity, which for me is what happiness truly is at this stage in my life.”

When asked which of these experiences were most meaningful to her, Olsen reflects more on the lifestyle and spiritual changes that she’s made as a result of her travels and the encounters she’s had along the way.

“Every single one of the things that I did taught me something about who I am and who I want to be,” says Olsen, who visited 68 countries on her journeys. “But you don’t have to travel halfway around the world to have meaningful experiences. Take to time explore the next town over or act like a tourist in your hometown. We’re very lucky to be in the suburbs of D.C., because there’s such a wealth of opportunities here in our own backyard.”

Olsen admits that learning how to ride a motorcycle and then getting one of her own was a bit of a shock for her children. “I wanted to try something daring, and this definitely was outside of my comfort zone,” she writes in the book, adding that she found it meditative, and the experience has opened her eyes wider with each new adventure.

“At a certain point in our lives we need to stop living for other people and start living for ourselves.”

Since Dr. Katie Malehorn opened her veterinary practice, the primary purpose has been to offer better medicine, top-notch surgery, and premier customer service. That exemplary “gold standard of medical care” continues with every new hire, every human client, and every beloved pet.

One aspect of veterinary medicine that is noteworthy to consider is that an estimated 95 percent of Americans recently surveyed considered pets to be like family members, a tremendous increase compared to 20+ years ago.

As a result, Dr. Katie said this has greatly altered the overall industry’s approach to veterinary medicine. “People’s pets have become cherished family members. This has changed how we spend time with our pet parents, and the comprehensive care that we provide.”

COMMUNITY-ORIENTED VETERINARY PARK POTOMAC WELCOMES TWO NEW VETS INTO THE PRACTICE

The Veterinary Park Potomac team

Dr. Monica Calderon and  Dr. Kara Dougherty, who have joined Veterinary Park Potomac, have been welcomed by the community with open arms. At a time of continuous corporate buyouts, this is one of very few privately owned practices, which allows these medical professionals to offer the highest level of care; a definite attraction for the two new veterinarians.

“Dr. Monica and Dr. Kara are amazingly talented women whose skills complement one another” explained Dr. Katie. “The level of expertise they provide to the team aligns with the core values of the practice.”

What stands out about Dr. Kara, is “her approach to medicine, which includes a steady hand, outstanding instincts, and strong listening skills,” which are especially helpful with cardiac and internal medicine cases.

“Listening is especially important in the practice of medicine,” added Dr. Katie. “A lot of practitioners like to hear themselves talk, but one who listens and takes in everything from the humans and comes up with a plan is a gift.”

Complementing all of her other talents, “Dr. Monica has such passion for veterinary medicine that it is difficult to be in the same room with her and not be excited,” Dr. Katie said.

“With each difficult case and diagnosis, it is easy to feel defeated, but she is deeply committed to helping people and their pets. Our clients have picked up on it and the positive response to her care has been contagious.”

A Warm Welcome to Dr. Monica Calderon

Dr. Monica Calderon, who joined the vet practice in August 2024, graduated the year before from the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, after a rotating internship at the Friendship Hospital for Animals. “I have a passion for behavior medicine and reducing stress for our pets.”

She fell in love with sea turtles and aquatic medicine as a sophomore in college, but her goals changed and she became enthralled with small animal medicine. “I am happy with the path that came from it,” she says.

“I want to make sure we are always doing right by our patients. I am a big talker and educator when I am in the room. I always want to make sure the client knows what’s going on with their pet.”

Introducing Dr. Kara Dougherty

A New York native, Dr. Kara Dougherty graduated from the University of Miami Veterinary School in May 2023, but she knew her career aspirations from childhood. Her mother’s love for nursing also added to her passion.

“From age five I knew I wanted to become a vet. I grew up horseback riding and I was on the equestrian team at college in Cornell,” Dr. Kara said. She first considered Marine Science, but after a rotating internship during her first-year residency, including intensive training with the best specialists in their fields, she decided on her path. “I enjoy general practice, because of the follow-up, and forming relationships with the patients.”

She joined Veterinary Park Potomac in October 2024 and isn’t looking back. “It is obvious how much the staff members care about each client and their pets. Dr. Katie has been such a wonderful mentor to me, and I love hearing Dr. Monica’s ideas,” Dr. Kara said. “Every day I come to work excited to learn and to grow my client base and know-how.”

The Importance of Dental Care for Our Pets

One aspect of animal care, that all of these veterinarians are concerned about is oral health for pets, especially with February being National Pet Dental Health Month as designated by the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Dr. Katie tries to communicate to her human clients that a pet’s oral health is related to longevity and quality of life. Periodontal problems often lead to loss of bone, and animal patients in those later years have pain and discomfort, falls, and fractures.

“In our industry and this practice, it is all about how we can make the changes now to the family’s approach at home,” she said, “and with routine cleanings we do it so we don’t have those sad cases in the later years.”

Loving Your Work with Humans and Their Pets

Overall, Dr. Katie says what the practice’s new veterinarians all share with her is a deep passion for their work. “There is no way to show up in this industry without loving what you do,” she said. “We are absolutely honored that our clients choose us to care for their pets.”

A NEW RESTAURANT, BAR, AND PERFORMANCE VENUE IN THE WOODMONT TRIANGLE OF BETHESDA

ON St. Elmo

ARTICLE BY DAVID ROBERT LAMBERT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY HAWKEYE JOHNSON
“Every detail is designed to transport guests to a place that feels both timeless and new.”

ON St. Elmo is a vibrant fusion of a restaurant, lounge, and entertainment with immersive experiences. Key features include a central bar, private event spaces, and live performances.

It is located in Bethesda's Woodmont Triangle, and hosts live DJs, comedy, music, and live acrobatics. ON St. Elmo has extended hours from 3 PM to 3 AM on Fridays and Saturdays.

This vibrant space showcases American coastal, Mediterranean-inspired cuisine in an atmosphere brimming with creativity and flair. The owners are Michael Romeo and Sarah Rehman, a husband-andwife team. The competent head team also includes Executive Chef George Hackey; Bernie Braun, a jack of many trades, does sound, lighting, and tech; and Operations Director Hassan Nahim.

THE CORE TEAM

Michael, a Montgomery County native, started in the entertainment business at age 16. He has since started various businesses in DC and Montgomery County. Michael's career spans over three decades. ON St. Elmo is Michael’s 13th venture, and this new one is bringing the late-night club scene to Bethesda! Sarah, too, is no stranger to running a business. She owns Flying Buddha Studio in Gaithersburg, which elevates the concept of movement and wellness to incredible new heights. She said, “I've been a teacher for 15 years for yoga and aerial dance.” Look for the Midnight Circus and Valentine's Day-themed events!

Chef George is a Montgomery County native who has developed a deep love for flavors that combine Southern roots with the vibrant cuisines of New Orleans, Latin America, and the Mediterranean. Chef George said, “Food is my love language to the world.”

With extensive hospitality experience, this awesome core team is creating a welcoming, interactive environment. Chef George said, “We're very accommodating.” They’re offering something nobody

else offers, staying open until three o'clock and a long happy hour. Michael said. “Some people want to come have dinner. Some people want to come to happy hour. There's something for everyone.” Michael went on to say, “The only boss we have is our customers.”

EXCELLENT FACILITIES

As you walk down the stairs to the maître d' table, the performance stage is on your left. Just beyond the stage is a semi-private dining area that seats 24-30 guests. Note that there are two trapeze hooks in the two-story ceiling, one above the stage and one over the dining tables.

A moderate-sized area in front of the stage can be used for dancing.

Turn to your right, and you will see an impressive central bar with 43 bar stools. Michael said, “Look at these bar stools; they are four inches lower than in most bars. So when women sit here, it's more comfortable.” Sarah said, “Our bartenders are super talented.”

If there’s a performance going on, you don’t have to “park” yourself in front of the stage. In the middle of the bar area, there are large screen monitors. Michael said, “Now you can just sit anywhere, like a supper club, and watch the show like you go to a stadium.”

Some of the more popular cocktails are the Summer Fling, a gin-based drink with a dash of Tabasco, the Spicy Mike, and the Black Widow.

The Potomac Lifestyle Cocktail reimagines the traditional Manhattan with an infusion of burnt rosemary, barkey, smokey, sweet orange note of dry vermouth. This bold twist adds the depth of an unforgettable flavor. Potomac Lifestyle is available at ON St. Elmo. https://citylifestyle.com/articles/ introducing-the-potomac-lifestyle-cocktail

Far to the left of the bar is a long, padded wall bench with tables and chairs on the aisle. Nearer to the bar are high-top tables and chairs.

On the right of the bar are a few tables and a separate Side Room. This function room can be used for private parties as well as event space for comedy acts, circus cabaret, magic shows, etcetera. Depending on the configuration and event, the Side Room accommodates around 120 guests.

DIVERSE MENU

There is a wide range of options: appetizers, salads, skewers, flatbreads, and main dishes, which include seafood, steak, lamb, chicken, and vegan selections.

Signature dishes include:

• Chilean Sea Bass

• Lobster Bisque Pasta

As their website says, “ON St. Elmo is not just a restaurant, bar, or lounge—it's an experience. From its stunning visuals and vibrant sounds to its exceptional food and drinks, every detail is designed to transport guests to a place that feels both timeless and new.”

Michael said, “The most important thing is seeing people have a good time.”

We match singles and have mixers in and around D.C. It tends to be tougher than some other areas because it is a very political, buttoned-up group and they’re kind of stressed out, so they come to us for the mixers. We usually bring the New Yorkers down to infiltrate the area. But rest assured there are plenty of eligible men in D.C.

BASED ON YOUR EXPERIENCE, WHAT IS THE EASIEST PLACE IN THE U.S. TO FIND A LOVE MATCH? AND THE HARDEST PLACES AND WHY?

The easiest place is South Florida which has more men due to people moving there during COVID-19. It has become a singles “mecca.” The second place is Austin and the third is Nashville. The hardest places are New York City and Los Angeles. The competition is fierce and there are more women than men since COVID-19. Although I do believe the Midwest men are the best because they can be the most chivalrous.

Mining The Golden Bachelorette

Advice on Dating and Love from Rockville’s Joan Vassos - Fortune Favors the Bold!

Golden Bachelorette Joan Vassos says that since her reality TV show ended, her normal routine turned into a whirlwind of romance, family, and first-time opportunities that she is savoring with great relish.

The 62-year-old Rockville native and former private school administrator performed in Disney’s Aladdin on Broadway and has been shopping with her fiancé Chock Chapple for a place to share in New York City while navigating the holidays in Potomac with their respective families.

Joan and Chock became engaged during the November 13th season finale, and she says that they are planning to get

Joan Vassos and Chock Chapple on The Golden Bachelorette

married, but are taking the arrangements slowly. For now, they are "living in the moment" and spending time as a blended family; mostly in Rockville.

When Chapple visited her during the holidays, she enjoyed taking him to the Brooklyn Deli, in Rockville, which has a sandwich called “The Vassos.” They also went to Rockville’s Mykonos Restaurant, went shopping at Tyson’s Corner, and had an excursion to the Lone Oak Farm Brewing Company in Olney.

In the future, she plans to take him to Annapolis, Ocean City, and Glenstone; several more of her favorite local places.

Looking back, Vassos said she was initially worried about how she would look on season one of The Golden Bachelor, her first step into reality TV.

“I realized that it was completely dignified, and I got to meet these amazing women, who were diving into life, and their bravery made me feel brave,” she explained. Then with The Golden Bachelorette, she went on 24 “first dates,” and shared laughter and tears with the prospective men before selecting Chapple.

“Going forward,” she recalled, “I thought about the risk versus the reward and that was the strongest message playing in my head, that if I risked this, and something great happened, the reward was worth it.”

If Chapple, being a bit of a daredevil who has gone diving with sharks, was to offer dating advice to the men out there, Vassos says he would tell them “To take a chance on finding love!”

The lovebirds have been matching some of the women from Golden Bachelor with some of the men on Golden Bachelorette, and telling them it is worth the effort. “It’s worth going out to meet people, have fun, and share stories about your lives. He and I did it and it worked, so why not give it a try?”

Vassos adds that when she meets fans of the series in the grocery store and around her community, they are buoyed by her journey.

“If I hadn’t gone on the show,” she said, “I don’t think I would have given up, because even though it requires a lot of effort, the reward in the end is worth it. Fortune favors the bold!"

Let us celebrate the power of knowledge and those who embrace it, not only to improve their own life, but the lives of others.

With Black History Month upon us and our Local Love issue underway, we felt it essential to highlight some glowing examples of black excellence within Maryland and Washington, D.C. and to mention some of the great leaders that have risen within their careers as alumni from these exceptional institutions.

HBCU stands for Historically Black Colleges and Universities. These institutions were established primarily to provide higher education opportunities to African Americans at a time when they were largely denied access to predominantly white colleges and universities due to racial segregation and discrimination. The first HBCU, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, was founded in 1837. The first HBCU founded in Maryland, in 1865, is Bowie State University. The first HBCU in Washington, D.C. is The University of the District of Columbia and was founded in 1851, the second oldest in the country.

Another fine example of those positively impacted by the HBCUs, were Jewish refugees. The following is a history chronicled in the Museum exhibition, Beyond Swastika and Jim Crow: Jewish Refugee Scholars at Black Colleges.

“Rejected from faculty positions at predominantly white institutions like Princeton and Harvard, Herz faced an uncertain path forward.

Fortunately, another door opened. Many Jewish refugees, like Herz, found opportunities at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the U.S., including Howard University in Washington, D.C., and Hampton Institute in Virginia. For the HBCUs, hiring these scholars brought fresh perspectives and international ideas to their students. For the refugees, it offered not only a career but also a sense of belonging when other institutions had turned them away.”

HBCUs continue to play a vital role in reducing racial disparities, addressing social inequities, and producing graduates who make lasting contributions to society. All races and creeds are welcome as they continue to serve in the name of higher education for all.

Notable Alumni include:

• Bowie State: Gwendolyn T. Britt.

• Coppin State: Verda Welcome.

• UMES: Clarence Clemons

• Morgan State: Kweisi Mfume.

• UDC: John Thompson, Aldon Lynn Nielsen.

• Howard: Kamala Harris, Elijah Cummings.

Potomac Community Village

Neighbors

helping neighbors remain engaged in their community

At the height of the Covid pandemic in 2021, Arthur and Sandy Becker of Potomac missed being active in their community and local synagogue. As retired professionals – Arthur practiced medicine as an OB/GYN and Sandy worked at Westat – they decided it was time to “broaden their horizons.” After a friend mentioned the great programs provided by Potomac Community Village, Sandy decided to try it out for a year. The rest, as they say, is history. Both became very involved in the Village’s many activities and now Arthur is serving on PCV’s Board of Directors. Potomac Community Village is part of the “Village movement” that began in Boston in 2002. Its aim is to help seniors age in place and reduce social isolation. More than twenty years later more than 300 Villages have sprung up across the country and more are in development – currently 80 exist in the DMV, 28 in Montgomery County.

Eddie Rivas, the board’s Vice President and Villages Liaison, worked as a gerontologist for over 30 years and held positions at state and area offices on aging and national aging organizations, including AARP. He notes that one of the things the Villages started is filling in those gaps where local public agencies

lack enough money to provide the services needed to assist the missing “middle community” of individuals.

Every Village has a service side and a social side. The service side includes volunteers offering assistance to each other with rides to medical appointments or events, tech support, light errands or shopping, providing friendly phone calls and visits as needed, or resources through a networking email.

Most Villages grow and develop based on the interests of the group’s members. Lynette Ciervo is the organization’s dynamic Director of Engagement. What she discovered when she first started working for the group is that people in Potomac were often more interested in the social side a Village could offer them: they loved the idea of coming together, eating together, and simply getting together.

It takes a village, joining forces to care for the community at large.

Ciervo responds to the different interests that members bring up. “Because this group has really passionate climate activists and scientists who worry about the environment, we started a Green group.” A climate workshop is being organized to take place in Potomac.

For the Beckers, joining PCV realized their desire to expand their horizons. They reflect that the people they meet are interesting in a lot of ways – their careers, travels, and life experiences. They enjoy the interesting discussions they have with them and learn about the different areas of expertise members have: “I was thrilled to be able to learn about such subjects as aerospace,” Dr. Becker stated.

A list of monthly events is available on the group’s online events calendar: https://pcv.helpfulvillage.com/events. A glance at its December and January events included their monthly arts programming, a program on illumination stations, the PCV Book Group Meeting, a holiday party for members, volunteers, and guests, a members’ lunch at the Hong Kong Pearl Restaurant, an event on gardening, and a PCV Speaker Series event. “We did 160 programs last year and often get together several times a week,” Ciervo notes. The Solo-Agers Group is a new program gaining in popularity as members meet new friends to attend events with or to just get together to meet other single seniors.

Joan Kahn, a retired professor of sociology at the University of Maryland who currently serves as the president of PCV’s board, describes its role succinctly: “We are the glue that brings people together.”

Valentines By Kids

Spreading love, one valentine at a time

Patrick Kaufmann, a junior at the Washington International School and Potomac resident, is brightening lives through his nonprofit, Valentines By Kids. More than 40,000 children across the DC/MD/VA area participate in the program, which Patrick runs from his home.

The concept is simple: Patrick encourages schools to have students create vibrant Valentine’s Day cards. These heartfelt creations are delivered to other children, patients in hospitals, residents in long-term care facilities, and homebound clients of DC-based Food and Friends. What began in 7th grade with 300 children has now expanded to over 175 schools, supported by its new 501(c)(3) status.

The initiative spreads warmth and joy to communities across the nation. Patrick and the children are helping make the world a brighter, more compassionate place. Their pride in crafting each card is surpassed only by the happiness it brings to recipients, perfectly reflecting the motto: “Made by hand – felt by hearts.”

Top Left: Patrick Kaufmann spreading joy
Top Right: A beautiful valentine for a lucky recipient.
Bottom Right : Love in every form uplifts those who need it most.
