COLONIAL OPTICIANS CELEBRATES 60 YEARS OF BEING TRUSTED WITH YOUR MOST PRECIOUS GIFT – YOUR EYE SIGHT
While advances in technology have helped Colonial Opticians evolve, one aspect of the business has remained unchanged for six decades: its commitment to high-quality products and exemplary customer service.
Now celebrating its 60th anniversary, this beloved family-owned business continues to stand out as a local staple; even as big companies have taken over most smaller businesses. This enduring success is a testament to the company’s unique approach.
Colonial Opticians began when Lou and Sylvia Williams opened their first store in Bethesda, MD. Over the years, it has remained a trusted name in eye care. Today, as devoted clients and the
“THE
"Our team is dedicated to preserving the legacy of quality that my father started 60 years ago," Debby adds. "We’ve grown, but our core values remain unchanged."
Karen Williams, Debby’s sister-in-law, explains that it all starts with a passion for helping people. “Local doctors often send us their most challenging cases, and it’s incredibly rewarding to take on these difficult prescriptions and find the right frames and lenses for our patients. We don’t limit ourselves to any one manufacturer; we simply want to make sure every patient gets the best possible solution.”
The family-owned business also provides on-site appointments for eye exams at all four
community celebrate this milestone, the business continues to offer top-quality service and eyewear.
The company became known for offering customers well-fitting, attractive frames and stateof-the-art lenses — innovations unparalleled in the Washington, D.C. area, they now have four locations — Potomac, Bethesda, Rockville, and Kentlands. The family business is in its third generation, owned and operated by Lou and Sylvia's children—Gary, Jason, and Debby—along with daughter-in-law Karen, and grandsons Chase and Cortland.
"Even though we’ve grown to four locations, our philosophy hasn’t changed," says Debby Williams Allnutt, daughter of Lou and Sylvia. "We still provide excellent customer service, superior quality products, and a high level of expertise."
Throughout the decades, the staff at each location has consistently provided the best professional care and used the finest materials to fill every prescription. Their credo is simple: we will never compromise on quality or customer care, never offering bargains at the expense of a customer’s vision.
locations. They also donate their eye exam lane to low vision specialists working towards blindness prevention and improving vision care for the community, so those in need can receive treatment.
For many patients, Colonial Opticians solves common eyewear issues, like frames that don’t fit properly and cause discomfort or dissatisfaction. Unlike other optical shops that may simply direct customers to pick something from a display, the Colonial Opticians team takes the time to carefully select the right frames and lenses for each individual.
“When customers leave our stores with glasses that truly fit and look great, they’re thankful, happy, and eager to refer us to their family and friends,” Karen says. “We specialize in solving problems for people who need hardto-fit eyewear.”
For complex cases, including head injuries, doctors also turn to Colonial Opticians for special tints and prisms tailored to each patient’s needs.
New customers, especially those with narrow or no nose bridges, have struggled for years with poorly fitting glasses. Colonial Opticians will find eyewear that fits and functions comfortably.

“We take pride in offering a wide range of options for every customer,” Karen says. "From children's frames, low/high bridges, to petite sizes, we provide 25-30 different choices, ensuring that each person finds what they need."
When it comes to purchasing glasses, Karen and her team don’t wait for customers to ask questions, they take the initiative to understand their needs. “We ask questions to get a full picture of what our customers’ needs are,” Karen adds. “There are so many variables with lenses like progressives, and we want to make sure the eyeglasses supersede their expectations.”
Karen’s advice for maintaining a thriving business is simple: “Always be open to new ideas and keep evolving. That means staying up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies, and thinking outside the box.”
Through the years, some doubters have questioned how a small, family-owned business could survive in a world dominated by big-box stores, online shopping, and chain optical shops. Colonial Opticians has not only survived for 60 years – it's thriving!
“Some customers try other options, but they often come back to us because they realize the difference in quality and service,” Debby says. “We have highly educated customers who appreciate the personal care and exceptional quality we provide.”

NIGEL REID HELPS CANCER PATIENTS
EMBRACE HOLISTIC APPROACHES
ARTICLE BY DEBRA WALLACE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
When Nigel Reid first explored the importance of health and nutrition, he discovered a whole new way of thinking about wellness that went beyond traditional care from doctors and hospitals.
While Canadians and Europeans have long been more accepting of complementary or alternative medicine as part of their healthcare routine, about half of the American population believes in the efficacy of homeopathic, holistic, or alternative treatments, some of which were first introduced in the U.S. in 1825.
The overall acceptance rate of alternative medicine is rising because more medical professionals are embracing it, and more patients are questioning what else is out there and asking for alternatives when it comes to our physical and mental health.
Nutritional therapist Nigel Reid is eager to answer many of these questions to help treat patients with cancer, diabetes, traumatic brain injury, ALS, AIDS, autism, and other serious immune diseases and complement their traditional treatment with nutritional supplements.
Reid has studied Nutritional Endocrinology and Nutritional Therapy and works with chiropractors in the Baltimore area to help their patients find support beyond traditional medicine after they receive a challenging diagnosis. His main focus is cell and gut health.
Reid enjoys sharing his success stories. He recently had an elderly cancer patient who came to him for an immune therapy protocol, the only natural treatment in the Physicians’ Desk Reference (PDR) on the drug side.
The patient was undergoing treatment for Acute Myeloid Leukemia and was told by her oncologist that she didn't have long to live. Reid immediately began supporting the microenvironment and raised important lymphocytes by starting her on an autoimmune protocol. The treatment protocol worked in conjunction with chemotherapy and her other traditional oncology medications.
“Within days the woman’s strength returned, she no longer needed a wheelchair during hospital visits,
which were twice a week, and those visits were eventually reduced to twice a month,” Reid explained.
“I asked her what her goal was and she told me she wanted to be there for the birth of her first granddaughter,” Reid recalled.
“She was receiving twice weekly check-ups and immediately she had improved energy, even at this end stage of her condition. She lived for six months after the prognosis, long enough to meet the baby, and had six months of beloved family holidays, including Thanksgiving and Christmas.”
TALK ABOUT COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINE AROUND THE WORLD AND WHAT YOU BELIEVE THIS MEANS TO OUR OVERALL HEALTH AND WELLNESS.
Nigel Reid: The global perception of natural and complementary medicine is mixed. There are regulatory and thirdparty certifying bodies in North America and Europe.
It’s also fair to say that many Allopathic practitioners see the increasing interest in alternative modalities as a threat. Yet, many others see it as an opportunity to become better providers in that they are pursuing Functional Medical/Nutritional certifications, which is the future of personalized nutrition. In our Baltimore practice, we are already there. In addition to nutrition education, we offer weight loss, physical, and Chiropractic therapies. By early 2025 we will be expanding to offer infrared and cryogenic therapy.
HOW DOES WHEY PROTEIN CONCENTRATE RELATE TO FIGHTING AND KILLING CANCER?
To understand the role of a whey protein concentrate with bonded cysteine (WPC) and its role in the cancer discussion, we must first examine the role of the tripeptide glutathione (GSH) and its role in immune health. The "glutathione antioxidant system" is foremost among endogenous protective systems because
“She was receiving twice weekly check-ups and immediately she had improved energy, even at this end stage of her condition. She lived for six months after the prognosis.”
“I’m passionate about personalized health ... Very few people know that there are natural clinical protocols to help them experience optimal health.”
GSH participates directly in the destruction of reactive oxygen compounds through the GSH peroxidase and maintains in reduced active form, vitamins C and E, which also exert an antioxidant effect.
WPC has been shown to represent an effective and safe cysteine donor for GSH replenishment during GSH depletion in immune deficiency states. Cysteine is the crucial limiting amino acid for intracellular GSH synthesis. Animal experiments, and later in human trials, showed that the WPC also exhibited anti-carcinogenesis and anticancer activity. They do this via their effect on increasing GSH concentration in relevant tissues. It is considered that oxygen radical generation is frequently a critical step in carcinogenesis, hence the effect of GSH on free radicals as well as carcinogen detoxification.
For these reasons, cellular GSH plays a central role in the body’s defense against infection, free radicals and carcinogens. It is not surprising that the liver, which is the major organ involved in the detoxification and elimination of toxic materials, has the greatest concentration of GSH, followed by the eyes.
One of the major benefits to a person having an immune challenge is in the elevation of intracellular GSH which allows for monoclonal expansion of regulatory T-cells, CD4/CD8. Another very important benefit is feedback inhibition in cancer cells. There are published papers on human control studies demonstrating this. As of this writing, there are more than 23 placebo control studies and published papers on areas ie: cancers, pre-habilitation, HIV/Aids, Cystic Fibrosis, atheletic performance. There are also patent pending applications for Neurodegenerative challenges such as, ALS, Parkinsons, Traumatic Brain Injury, and Alzheimers, just to name a few. Interested parties can also access the animal publications papers around cortical impact. Another methodof-use patent attributed to the WPC is in Autism.
Although the WPC is natural and subject to DSHEA provisions, I always share the method-of-use patent on cancer with my clients as it possesses language around “treatment” or otherwise management of the conditions mentioned therein. This publication provides information around dosing, also. I personally encourage my clients to work with their treating staff in addressing their cancer diagnosis.”
We are seeing increases in Vitamin D, Zinc-rich foods and supplements, and of course Vitamin C. Another major trend that we are seeing more and more is in glutathione therapy. This is where my team and I are doing the most work in that we use the only glutathione therapy protocol that has a presence in the Physicians’ Desk Reference, and 79 medical method-of-use patents with clinical applications for cancers, HIV/AIDS, autism, etc.
DISCUSS THE IMPORTANCE OF UNDERSTANDING OUR GUT HEALTH OVERALL, AND HOW YOUR SUPPLEMENTS CAN HELP WITH THIS.
The gut contains trillions of microorganisms that make up the gut microbiome. These microorganisms include both beneficial and harmful varieties. Because it's said that 70 percent of the body’s immunity is attributed to the gut, maintaining a healthy balance can be critical.
One should also look at the oral microbiome as it is “upstream” from the gut and is responsible for gut and metabolic support. An example of this is in nitric oxide production. Nitric oxide is a signaling molecule for insulin, as well as an important vascular dilator (medicines that dilate or widen the blood vessels). Without the presence of the appropriate oral bacteria, the body will not be able to convert nitraterich foods to nitric oxide.
WHY ARE YOU SO PASSIONATE ABOUT COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINE?
More specifically, I’m passionate about personalized health as it relates to the unique wellness packages we have put together. Very few people know that there are natural clinical protocols to help them experience optimal health. The potential of being the one to share this education is of particular interest. It almost feels like a divinely-inspired mandate.

LEADING EXPERTS IN THE FIELDS OF FUNCTIONAL AND AESTHETIC MEDICINE OFFER ADVICE ON HOW TO STAY HEALTHY AND AGE GRACEFULLY
We’ve all heard about the dreaded hot flashes, hair loss, and depleted bone density among a plethora of other things as we get older, but thanks to advances in functional and aesthetic medicine, getting older can be a time of celebration and rejuvenation.
We recently spoke with four local experts who offered encouraging advice and proven techniques on how to take control of your physical, mental, and sexual wellness to keep you active, attractive, healthy and happy well into your so-called sunset years.
“This new phase of life should be celebrated rather than feared.”
— Dr. Sam DuFlo
“This new phase of life should be celebrated rather than feared,” says Dr. Sam DuFlo, PT, DPT, PRPC, founder, owner and chief medical officer of Indigo Physiotherapy in Potomac. “It’s a chapter of change that should be approached with a mindset of embracing new possibilities.”
DuFlo, a holistic physical therapist, specializes in pelvic floor physical therapy (PFPT) to promote both women’s and men’s pelvic health.
“Pelvic floor PT can help women manage the various symptoms and changes associated with perimenopause and menopause, as well as addressing the problems men may have with incontinence or ED,” says DuFlo. “PFPT can include exercises or stretches to improve bone health, maintain muscle strength, promote blood flow, improve functionality, prevent pain, and promote sexual wellness.”
He works with patients to put together a plan of care that considers their lifestyle, goals, activity level, and plans for the future. “We see a lot of people at 50+ starting to get really active playing pickleball, tennis, golf, running marathons, or traveling. We teach you how to be your strongest, best self giving a variety of exercises patients can do at home that promotes longevity and carries them forward as they age.”
“It’s also important to talk about what’s common versus what’s normal,” says DuFlo. “It may be common for women to have issues with leaking when they cough or sneeze, but that’s not normal. We can address that issue so people don’t have to feel worry or shame. There’s no reason women should have to wear panty liners forever.”

Hot flashes, night sweats, weight gain, fatigue, brain fog, and joint stiffness may be a fact of life for women entering perimenopause or menopause, but there’s no reason to suffer in silence with these symptoms.
Jennifer Gularson, PA-C, IFMCP, a functional medicine practitioner at the Osteopathic Center for Healing in Rockville, specializes in hormone replacement therapy for women and men.
“Right around age 50, women’s ovaries stop producing the hormones that keep them feeling young and vibrant, causing a variety of uncomfortable symptoms,” says Gularson.
Gularson specializes in bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), which utilizes medications derived from natural plant sources that act like the hormones your body produces naturally. These hormones, available as injections, creams, gels, pellets, or oral medications, can significantly help alleviate perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms.
“Unlike the hormones used back in the early 2000s that were thought to have negative effects such as cancer or heart disease, BHRT is chemically identical to the hormones your ovaries make, making it a safer option for hormone replacement therapy,” says Gularson.
“As a woman, once you enter menopause, you’re in it for the rest of your life,” she stresses. “The effects of not producing any more estrogen continue and can be far reaching, in terms of bone loss, high cholesterol, and greater risk of heart disease and dementia, among other issues.”
As men age, they’re susceptible to physical and sexual wellness issues as a result of hormonal imbalances and medical conditions.
“The most common complaints we hear from men are feeling tired, lack of energy and not having the drive they used to,” says Peter Petropoulos, MD, founder and medical director at Potomac Medical Aesthetics. “In addition to hormonal and medical concerns, weight is often a major factor in men’s physical and sexual wellness. Once we’re able to address the weight issue, we can often alleviate some other problems relating to fatigue, sleep, inability to concentrate, or other concerns. Medications can also have a secondary side effect, causing mental fatigue or other specific physical dysfunction,” he notes. Erectile dysfunction (ED) can have a significant impact on men’s physical and mental health. Medical conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure can hinder blood flow, while hormonal imbalances and neurological disorders may disrupt nerve signals essential for functionality. Psychological issues such as stress, anxiety, depression or relationship issues can create a cycle of anxiety exacerbating the problem. Lifestyle factors like obesity, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can play a significant role as well.
When it comes to treatment options for ED, Petropoulos focuses on medications, Shockwave therapy - using sound waves to repair blood vessels, and platelet-rich plasma therapy to promote healing and increase sensitivity.
Platelet-rich plasma therapy, or PRP, is a non-surgical treatment that’s increasingly being used in aesthetic and cosmetic procedures to treat a variety of conditions, including skin rejuvenation, hair loss, and ED. During the process a small amount of blood is drawn and separated into plasma and platelets using a centrifuge. The concentrated platelets are then injected into a specific area of the body and release growth factors and other proteins stimulating tissue repair and regeneration.
PRP is particularly effective for skincare treatment and hair rejuvenation, says Neil Rosenman, MD, an aesthetic and family medicine specialist at Regenerative Aesthetics & Cosmetic Medicine, a division of ROSM in North Bethesda.
“PRP facials address a variety of skin concerns, making them popular for improving fine lines and wrinkles; hyperpigmentation, age spots, and brown spots; enlarged pores and blackheads; acne and acne scars; stretch marks; dull complexion; uneven skin tone and texture; melasma; and sun damage. Treatment can rejuvenate the skin, leaving it with a natural, youthful, and flawless appearance,” says Rosenman.
“For hair regeneration, as we age, blood flow to the scalp decreases, causing hair follicles to shrink, leading to hair thinning and hair loss. PRP therapy involves injecting PRP into the scalp to stimulate dormant hair follicles, helping them to reactivate. A microneedling device is also used to further push PRP into the tissue plane where hair follicles reside. This process creates tiny injuries in the scalp tissue, triggering the body’s natural healing response, releasing growth factors and increasing blood flow to the area. As a result, the revitalized blood supply can restore shrunken hair follicles to their normal size, helping to regrow new hair, thicken existing hair, and encourage growth in areas where hair has previously fallen out,” he explains.
“These procedures provide a natural way to slow the aging process,” says Rosenman, “and keep you looking great at your current age.”

Customers visiting Cinnaholic in the vibrant Downtown Crown Community can count on a warm and welcoming atmosphere as they eye the bakery’s handcrafted gourmet cinnamon rolls, homemade cookie dough, brownies, breads and cookies. Cinnaholic desserts are not only made from scratch and baked fresh but are 100 percent plant-based, dairy and lactose-free, egg-free, and even cholesterol-free. Customers can select from many unique frosting flavors and a variety of fresh and decadent toppings. Mix and match flavors to create a new experience every visit! What started as a niche bakery in Berkley, California has grown into a franchise with 100 outlets in the United States and Canada.
Bill Clinton and Tawan Patrick met while students at the University of
Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) and remained friends through the years. They eventually decided to go into business together and bought the Cinnaholic Gaithersburg store in 2023. They inherited the bakery’s staff from the previous owner and have created an extended family which has been instrumental in creating a family friendly environment for customers.
While Cinnaholic started as a business venture, it has evolved into a platform for opportunity and community outreach. Bill and Tawan are both children of educators who worked in inner city school systems. They are not strangers to the struggles of others and are passionate about education, giving back and paying forward. Not only are they employers but they are mentors and assist their staff and on occasion customers with navigating the challenges of school and life. Many are still in high school and Bill and
Tawan believe in helping them navigate the challenges of finishing school, which they insist on. One of Bill’s proudest moments was tutoring one of their employees in trigonometry resulting in earning a B on a major test.
Tawan, on the other hand, assists with finding resources for the young staff such as quality child care, educational opportunities and career exploration. In addition to supporting the passions of the team, they also promote many of the neighboring businesses.
Bill and Tawan’s involvement in the community is wide-ranging, whether promoting local PTSAs, sponsoring school activities, being a sponsor for a local cotillion and golf tournament, partnering with a Jewish youth fraternity for a fundraiser, volunteering for food banks and church events, or even hosting a meeting of the Gaithersburg Chamber of Commerce. The dynamic duo proves it’s possible to run a busy and successful business while giving back to individuals, schools, and countless other local community organizations.
SUSHI
The first known sushi restaurant in North America opened in Los Angeles in 1966. In the late 1960s, the California roll was introduced. In the 1980s and 1990s, sushi became mainstream in American culture. It continued to grow in popularity and there are now more than 19,600 sushi restaurants in the U.S., representing a 4.8% growth in 2023 alone.
The DMV loves its sushi. Hanaro has been in Bethesda since 2016 and was rebranded Kusshi in early 2024. It was conceptualized with the intention of encapsulating what its managing partners, Wesley Yao and Kevin Lin, believed Japanese food and sushi could be. David Lee (VA/DC) and Jordan Lee (MD/DC) serve as the brand's regional managers.
Wesley and Kevin can be seen throughout the DMV assisting in all facets of daily operations. They also utilize their time strategizing how to optimize current opportunities for growth and long-term outreach to their esteemed guests.
Kusshi's new Rockville Town Center location opened in July of that year. Kusshi Town Center Reston is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2025. Their flagship location is in the North Bethesda's Pike & Rose.
SUSHI FAVORITES
Their signature bite, Kusshi Seared Salmon, exemplifies what makes Japanese food amazing – quality ingredients presented with approachable flavors. The bite starts with a sushi-grade salmon belly, which has a higher fat content, creating a tender vessel sandwiched between sushi rice and their seared sauce. This style, often called Tataki, can be found in other Japanese restaurants. However, Kusshi's secret is in the seared sauce that almost becomes a warm blanket when it’s bruleed onto the fish.
The Firecracker Roll balances the aspects of raw ingredients with cooked ones. This is ideal for guests who have started to venture past introductory sushi rolls like a California, but want to take it slow. Texturally, the roll has elements of crunch, heat, and creaminess.

Other rollsthat have started to gain in popularity include the Lava, Ovi, and Cherry Blossom Wesley’s favorite is the Lava Roll as well as one of their newest additions, the Got Beef? Roll.
Teriyaki Chicken, one of the most recognizable Japanese dishes, is a staple on the menu. Kusshi provides a large portion to ensure that their guests feel like they're getting true value.
Shrimp & Vegetable Tempura is breaded and fried to order. The culinary team tested a variety of shrimp options and decided on the jumbo shrimp because of its taste and value.
Wesley’s favorite kitchen item is the Hamachi Kama—a broiled yellowtail collar that’s traditionally served at Japanese bars called Izakayas. Many often overlook the yellowtail collar because of its proximity to the gills. When cooked, the collar is texturally reminiscent of steak.
