Celebrating Spring: A Season of Renewal and Joy

As winter gives way to warmer days, spring brings a vibrant sense of renewal and celebration. Across the world and in our communities, this season is marked by festivities, travel, and the pursuit of new beginnings.

The National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C., is a quintessential spring experience. The blooming cherry blossoms, a gift from Japan in 1912, create a breathtaking display of pink and white blooms. Visitors can enjoy parades, cultural performances, and the sheer beauty of nature’s artistry, reminding us of the fleeting beauty of life.

Spring also ushers in Holi, the joyous Hindu festival of colors. This celebration of love and renewal involves tossing vibrant powders, dancing, and feasting with family and friends. Holi is a reminder to embrace happiness and let go of past grievances—a tradition that resonates universally.

For many, Spring Break offers an opportunity to relax and recharge. Whether you’re planning a beach getaway, hiking through national parks, or exploring local attractions, this time is perfect for creating lasting memories.

Nowruz, the Persian New Year, is another celebration of spring’s arrival. Rooted in ancient Zoroastrian traditions, it symbolizes rebirth and renewal. Families gather to set a “Haft-Sin” table, filled with symbolic items representing prosperity, health, and joy. It’s a beautiful moment to reflect on the year behind and embrace the opportunities ahead.

For homeowners, spring is an inspiring time to transform dreams into reality. Whether it’s a kitchen remodel, creating an outdoor oasis, or adding functional spaces, this is the season to make your house truly feel like home. That’s where Avatar Design Build shines. With a commitment to innovative, custom designs and craftsmanship, Avatar Design Build brings homeowners’ visions to life, making the process seamless and rewarding.

This spring, embrace the celebrations, beauty, and opportunities the season offers. From festivals to personal projects, let the spirit of renewal guide you.

Warm wishes,

March 2025

PATRICK’S ELEGANT LIVING

No longer Tysons best kept secret

“It all goes back to the customer—he or she is like family and we will always make the customer our first priority,” declares Troy Englert, who with Patrick Dempsey co-owns Patrick’s Elegant Living in Tysons Corner. Englert isn’t just

“When we buy a line, we offer the entire line to our customers. We go deep. Lladró is an example”

“all talk” because their store’s new location with its enormous, multi-storied building makes it easy to locate, situated at 1800 International Drive in McLean, and it offers that rarest of commodities –its own outdoor parking!

Finding the right location for Patrick’s has been a process for Englert and Dempsey. They started in 2007 as Patrick’s Fine Linens and Home Decor, a 2,500-square-foot store and then expanded to a 9,500 square-foot store in Old Town Alexandria. After water damage to the store forced them to relocate, they opened stores at The Wharf in DC, a small store in Chevy Chase (which closed), and another in Tysons Galleria. The Galleria store was located on the third floor of the building and Patrick’s was sometimes viewed as Washington’s “best kept secret” since

many customers didn’t know where to find it. When the opportunity arose in 2023 to move the store to the stand alone building that once housed Crate and Barrel, Englert and Dempsey were eager to make the change. The buildout took about a year, and its spacious 45,000-square-foot interior is large enough to accommodate everything they offer, including vanities for bathrooms and a full kitchen installation upstairs which they can use as they help customers with home interior design.

Once inside the store two adorable Bedlinton terriers, Miss Shannon and Pineapple Jack, rush to greet visitors. New shoppers may feel as though they have stepped inside a virtual Architectural Digest with its unique but full offerings of upscale home furnishings, lighting, indoor and outdoor

furniture, tableware, linens, jewelry, and more!

The interior is a feast for the eyes with its sparkling chandeliers and stunning displays of art.

Patrick’s owners believe strongly in purchasing distinctive, one-of-a-kind pieces during their frequent buying forays abroad to France, Germany, Italy, South Korea, or in the U.S. to New York, Georgia, and North Carolina. Their travels mean customers can buy Dea or Sferra linens from Italy and luxury tableware from Hering Berlin. They make a special effort to sell local artists such as jewelry from designer Michael Aram and contemporary art from Oenone Hammersley and Alex Name. The multi-talented Englert has even designed several pieces of furniture and lighting himself.

According to Englert, “When we buy a line, we offer the entire line to our customers. We go deep. Lladró is an example – customers love the small figurines but we also offer the big art pieces and lighting. We like to have special pieces their artists think are special. These artists have passion and we have passion to share their works.”

Basically Patrick’s is a lifestyle store – a great place to buy unique gifts, whether it be for the hostess, or for a birthday or anniversary celebration. Their store items range from large pieces such as dining tables, sofas and bedroom furniture to the smaller items shoppers need such as bathrobes, pajamas, and perfumes—one of the largest inventory of perfumes in the metro DC area. “Now that we’re larger we’re no longer a mom and pop store, even though we are still like a mom and pop store,” Englert laughs.

A large part of Patrick’s business is its design services – both for the home and office. “We want you to be happy with your final product.” It can range from furnishing small living areas in apartments to filling up an entire home or penthouse. As always, its owners view it’s their job to work with their customers to make them entirely satisfied.

“We want you to be happy with your final product.” It can range from furnishing small living areas in apartments to filling up an entire home or penthouse.

Englert’s many personal and professional interests sprang from his youth. Growing up in the small town of Celestine in Indiana, his drive and willingness to work hard started at a young age. He studied business management at the University of Southern Indiana with a golf scholarship. Improbably he ended up playing on the university’s golf team, again on a scholarship. After discovering a love of flying, he graduated from Embry Aeronautical University in Colorado. For many years he flew well-known business and political leaders around the country in chartered planes. He is the co-founder of Crystal Air Charters (CAC), eventually serving as its president.

Another enthusiasm: Englert owns and helped design two restaurants: Hummingbird in Alexandria and Kaliwa on the Wharf in DC. And let’s not forget plans to open a pet store in the near future. It’s safe to say that Patrick’s is no longer Tyson’s “best kept secret” – its continued emphasis on customer satisfaction with their service and unique offerings not only keeps buyers returning but entices new ones to stop in as well.

Moving MoCo

The dynamic duo behind Mic’s Moving and Roaming Darling

In Montgomery County’s vibrant small business community, two entrepreneurs stand out for their dedication and innovative spirit—Mic and Meg Wendt. Mic leads Mic’s Moving, a company renowned for its customer-first approach, ensuring seamless local and long-distance moves for clients. Meg owns Roaming Darling, a professional organizing company specializing in concierge moves and senior rightsizing services, helping clients simplify their lives and relocations. Serving Montgomery County and the Greater Washington D.C. Metro area, Roaming Darling collaborates directly with Mic’s Moving to offer comprehensive moving solutions.

You might recognize these companies from seeing them on TV or featured in local news outlets. Mic’s Moving has been featured on NBC Nightly News and Roaming Darling was featured in Washingtonian for their work as a “move manager.” Roaming Darling is a member of the National Association of Senior & Specialty Move Managers, a trade group that provides training and certification. Roaming Darling was originally started in 2019 as a vintage clothing boutique, and over the past 5 years has evolved into a multi-service organizing company. Mic’s Moving has been operating in the DMV for the past 12 years.

Their teams assist with the entire scope of moving and right-sizing, from decluttering, donating, packing, storage, moving, unpacking, and organizing. If you’re looking into moving whether for a larger home or looking to right-size in the future, Mic and Meg have some tips to help you get started.  #1 Always Declutter First

Our clients who are happiest after a move, always put in a lot of effort to “right-size” their contents. Getting rid of expired pantry items, clothes that no longer fit, and items that no longer serve you is something that we assist our clients with.

Our clients who are happiest after a move, “right-size” their belongings. We assist with decluttering expired pantry items, unused clothes, and unneeded possessions. Start small with 10-minute sessions and ask if you’ve used an item in the past year. Donate, sell on FB Marketplace, or use Buy Nothing groups. We can also host estate sales to simplify the process.

#2 Identify Which Items Hold Value

People often think that their dining room furniture and china cabinets will be worth what they paid, but often these items have depreciated over time. The one thing that sells well is MCM furniture and niche art and jewelry. Our team can ensure clients have all the information and options necessary to achieve the best results when selling their treasures.

#3 Let the Experts

Handle Moving

Book your moving company at least a month ahead for a smooth experience. Professional organizers and movers save time and stress by packing efficiently, often in one session. They can also handle donations. Need staging? Mic’s Moving offers nearby storage in North Bethesda, letting you showcase your home while keeping your belongings safe.

#4 Don’t Wait on Unpacking

Clutter can increase stress and anxiety, as the brain thrives on order to ease mental load. Unpacked boxes make it hard to feel calm in your new home. Roaming Darling’s team specializes in unpacking and organizing, helping you settle in smoothly and enjoy your space from day one.

“Avatar

Design Build” Takes Great Pride in Creating Award-Winning Homes

ARTICLE BY DEBRA WALLACE
PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY POWELL

From the first moment that  Partap Verma discusses pursuing a custom-building project with local homeowners it is all about the intricate attention to detail.

A multi-award-winning builder and designer, his passion started with sketching floor plans in his composition book in grammar school.

Throughout his distinguished legal and diplomatic career, his dream of designing and building houses stayed strong, culminating with the construction of his dream project in Forest Glen in 2021, which despite fierce competition, earned him a gold medal for Best Custom House in the 5,000-8,000 square-foot- range from the Maryland Building Industry Association.

His company has also earned Reader’s Choice Awards from Potomac Lifestyle Magazine in 2024. Avatar literally means an incarnation or manifestation of a person or idea in Sanskrit, so Verma, believed it was “the perfect name for a rebirth or redevelopment of a site. Whether it is about tearing down an older home and rebuilding a new home or rejuvenating a piece of land that has been barren and building a new home there.”

This success was the catalyst to him becoming a builder and partner in Avatar Design Build with Mike Bousman, a 25-year veteran in the home building world while maintaining his roles as an extremely involved Montgomery County community leader,

husband, and doting father of three young children, (five-yearold boy-girl twins and nine-year-old son).

As a father, Verma is eager to impart his uncompromised work ethic. “Exceptional things happen when you are willing to put in the time, the work ethic, and the attention to detail.”

“What I love the most is bringing a vision to life, and doing it for an individual or a family who truly calls it home,” Verma said. “There is a tremendous amount of trust in getting them to the finish line with a budget and timeline. Being able to execute this is so gratifying and fulfilling!”

His career has included high-level work as an attorney in national security and privacy law for 20 years, working as a U.S. Diplomat to India and Turkey, and as a certified mediator resolving more than 100 cases, both locally and nationally, Verma is eager to use all of his diverse skills to the benefit of his custom home clients.

“This is not only about the work product; this is probably the biggest transaction of someone’s life and they want to put their trust into someone they know will get the job done and fill in any gaps of support that are needed.”

Verma has an exclusive relationship with award-winning architects Chris and Andrew Lapp of Claude C. Lapp Architects, LLC. “Partap Verma continually pushes the boundaries. Partap fights for every square foot to maximize a client's investment, while maintaining high

“EXCEPTIONAL THINGS HAPPEN WHEN YOU ARE WILLING TO PUT IN THE TIME, THE WORK

ETHIC, AND THE ATTENTION TO DETAIL.”

standards and quality control throughout his builds,” the architects explained. “The beautiful end product reflects that. We always know that our clients are in good hands when working with Avatar.”

Verma and his company recently broke ground on a 25,000-square-foot mansion in Potomac, with a two-story walk-in closet, 12-foot ceilings in the basement, a lovely guest house, and an infinity pool.

Depending on the size of the home, it takes anywhere from 10 to 36 months to build a custom home. “We don’t rush the

process because the more you take time to be in touch with what works for you, and refining designs, the better the outcome,” he explained.

“It can take six months or more to finetune the floor plans, elevations, and color schemes. Also, we try to treat that second process of building more organic. After the framing and drywall, you get a much better sense of what works and what doesn’t.” The company is building homes in Montgomery, Howard, Prince George’s, Baltimore, and Anne Arundel counties.

Verma and his family live in the “dream project home” in Forest Glen, a source of pride for the community. It also serves as a model home for future projects so people can see the attention to detail and high-quality workmanship involved.

“Since the house is near my children’s school there is a tremendous source of pride for them and their friends. I am known as the builder in the neighborhood —and with us breaking ground on two new custom homes this year— my children proudly point and say, “This is the house our Papa is building!’ ”

Purchasing a home is one of the most significant decisions you’ll make in your lifetime. Realtor Nurit Coombe offers valuable advice for buyers and sellers.

TEAM NURIT HELPS HOMEOWNERS FULFILL DREAMS

For homeowners looking to buy or sell in the Potomac Region, working with a Realtor who can walk you through all the ins and outs of the market, highlight the pros and cons of various neighborhoods, and help educate you about what to expect throughout the process is extremely important.

We recently spoke with Nurit Coombe, owner and managing partner of The Agency DC in Bethesda, recent winner of the Best Realtor for Potomac Lifestyle, on market trends, advice for buyers and sellers, and the unique benefits of working with a boutique brokerage that offers a variety of services to homeowners.

For homeowners looking to make a move this year, Coombe notes that housing in the region is still a good investment. While interest rates will likely remain high and inventory remains low, she encourages clients to look for the best house for them rather than the best deal.

“We talk to potential clients about their needs, wants, lifestyle, what neighborhoods they see themselves living in, and their budget to help determine the best decision for their family,” says Coombe.

“Our biggest concern right now is the attainable housing proposal in Montgomery County, which aims to allow duplexes, triplexes, and quadplexes in single-family home neighborhoods. While the proposal seeks to address the housing shortage and provide more options for middle-income residents, it may not achieve its goal of affordability due to high lot and construction costs. Additionally, this plan could disrupt the character of our beautiful neighborhoods by mixing different types of housing within the same street, and concerns remain about insufficient infrastructure, overcrowded schools, traffic congestion, and the potential reduction of property values,” she stresses.

Nurit

When it comes to finding the right house, Coombe encourages clients to focus on the long term.

“We always say, you marry the house and you date the mortgage. The house is the place where you’re going to live for a long time. You can always refinance and make changes to the mortgage later.”

Coombe encourages buyers to be patient and not get frustrated. “If it takes a little longer to find the house that’s right for you, that’s okay. If you work with an agent who takes the time to understand what you’re looking for and is able to educate you on the different communities and neighborhoods you’re considering, you’ll find what you’re looking for.”

As for sellers, she says, don't put your life on hold waiting for interest rates to fall. “If you plan to sell within the next two years, it's never too early to start talking to a Realtor who can help you plan and prepare everything you need to get in order. Many of our clients begin decluttering and organizing two years in advance. It's never too early to call us for guidance.”

Coombe focuses on her team approach to help clients find the perfect home for them. “As a boutique brokerage, we offer full concierge service and a positive home buying experience to each of our clients. We work as a team to capitalize on each other’s strengths, expertise and resources. We do everything in-house, including professional videos, photography, social media and marketing, and all of our agents work full-time and have decades of experience.”

In addition, says Coombe, “We have established relationships with contractors, lenders, title companies, attorneys, estate sale representatives and other professionals in the community who can assist with the services our clients require. We aim to help homeowners maximize their sale price and minimize the hassle,” she stresses.

“My greatest joy is helping my clients make their real estate journey exciting and hassle-free, knowing we are here for them now and forever,” says Coombe. “Our clients become our friends and know they can always call us for anything they need, whether it's finding a contractor, choosing paint colors, or just enjoying our parties and community events for years to come.”

“WE ALWAYS SAY, YOU MARRY THE HOUSE AND YOU DATE THE MORTGAGE. YOUR HOME IS THE PLACE WHERE YOU’LL CREATE MEMORIES FOR YEARS, AND YOU CAN ALWAYS REFINANCE AND CHANGE THE MORTGAGE LATER.”

Nowruz

WITH THE PERSIAN CALLIGRAPHER NAHID BOUSTANI

Barely two months after observing Christmas, Hanukkah, and Ramadan, another venerable celebration is about to begin: Nowruz, an ancient festival over 3,000 years old. Although deeply rooted in Iranian culture, it is recognized by millions across Asia and other parts of the world, including Iraq, Afghanistan, Turkey, and Kazakhstan. The holiday is the highpoint of the Persian year and is secular, celebrated by all faiths. Nowruz occurs on the vernal equinox, when the sun is located exactly above the equator, which is usually between March 19th and 22nd. The celebration itself takes place over 13 days and is full of symbolism which can vary from country to country but always centers on the common themes of rebirth, new beginnings, and the celebration of nature.

“My favorite use of my art is through contributing to creating conversations, social impact projects, and community building.”
The ancient art of Persian calligraphy

Nahid Boustani of McLean celebrates Nowruz with her family and friends by first setting up the Nowruz table, which will stay set for 13 days. The items are symbolic, each one representing health, wealth, and life. Her family members and neighbors enjoy sitting around the table before the exact time of the equinox, using that time to quietly contemplate, read poetry, and be still.

Boustani is a celebrated Persian calligrapher, calligraphy being one of the most revered arts throughout the history of Iran. It is also a contemplative and meditative practice known for its transformative and tranquil effects. Calligraphy for Boustani was “a soul calling,” a return to an ancient art she was introduced to during her childhood in Iran.

After moving to the U.S., and completing a work in calligraphy for an Iranian family in New York, she learned they were “overjoyed with the spirit of the art.” Boustani has also gone on to sell many of her calligraphy pieces in charity auctions. “What I first started as a connection to my roots and a deep expression of my spiritual side, naturally evolved to become something that extended to serve many reasons.”

In 2019 she was invited to participate in Reston Town Center’s prestigious national outdoor art fair and since has been a part of multiple group exhibitions. She reflects that “My favorite use of my art is through contributing to creating conversations, social impact projects, and community building.” She adds, “To stay true to the ancient nature of this art, though my style stays contemporary, I only use the ancient tools of a wooden pen and ink.”

Boustani continues to spread knowledge of the richness of Persian culture and the ancient art of calligraphy. In January she offered an afternoon of conversation and hands-on experiment in calligraphy at the Iranian-American Community Center in Tysons, Virginia. She welcomes commission projects and will soon be opening her online platform to emerging artists and calligraphy lovers.

DON’T WAIT FOR ST. PATRICK’S DAY TO CELEBRATE YOUR IRISH-NESS

The Irish Inn at Glen Echo

“This is the only place in this area where you can hear a regular session with traditional Irish music.”

If you are looking for some delicious food, great music, and true Irish bonhomie, you don’t have to look far: The Irish Inn at Glen Echo, located beside Glen Echo Park and serving folks across the metropolitan area, delivers.

Proprietor Christy (Chris) Hughes was born in Ireland and attended Catering College in Athenry Co, Galway where he learned all aspects of the hospitality business. After arriving in the US in 1974 he discovered the Dubliner Restaurant in D.C., which had just opened, and he worked there for 18 years. Subsequently he left the Dubliner and bought Ireland’s Four Provinces in D.C., acquired another restaurant in Falls Church also called Ireland’s Four Provinces , and kept them for 15 years. Eventually, he and his wife Libby Byrne bought The Irish Inn at Glen Echo in 2003. The Inn has the ambience of a traditional Irish pub with draft beers and spirits, and also includes an indoor restaurant with private dining rooms and white tablecloths, and outdoor seating on a deck overlooking MacArthur Boulevard and Glen Echo.

The Irish Inn offers traditional Irish as well as contemporary American cuisine. Its Irish fare includes Shepherd’s Pie, Fish and Chips, and Corned Beef and Cabbage. Brunch is served from 11:00 am to 2:30 pm Saturdays and Sundays, and includes a traditional Irish breakfast, Irish pancakes, and Dublin scrambled eggs. Lunch and dinner dishes expand on the

brunch menu with a soup of the day and delicious fresh fish offerings.

Not to be content with its food offerings, The Irish Inn offers weekly evening entertainment Sunday through Thursday. Sunday from 4:30pm to 7:30pm offers jazz with Brooks Tegler & Friends; Mondays 7:00pm to 10:00pm you can enjoy traditional Irish and American folk music with the Irish Inn Mates, with Mitch Fanning, Jesse Winch, Tina Eck, and Zan McLeod; Tuesdays 7:30pm to 9:00pm is trivia night; Wednesday 6:00pm to 9:00pm enjoy the Inn House Band featuring Steve Little and Mike Scoglio; and Thursday 6:00pm to 9:00pm diners can listen to musician Jeff Herbert, a noted guitarist and vocalist who also plays bagpipes. According to Hughes, Monday evening is their biggest night, with 200 to 300 people in attendance.

Many visitors to The Irish Inn are “regulars” who enjoy the camaraderie they find there. Barbara Talbot of Chevy Chase, who consistently attends on Monday evenings, notes that “This is the only place in this area where you can hear a regular session with traditional Irish music.” And not only does she love hearing the Irish Inn Mates but says that sometimes as many as ten musicians will be playing. Talbot also enjoys joining the other people who come regularly—around 15 to 20. Whenever possible she is there, and looks forward to her regular visits – “It really is a wonderful Monday night outing,” she says.

Pools Removed

your property with pool and tennis court removal

Pools and tennis courts, once seen as ultimate luxuries, can become impractical over time due to costly upkeep, safety concerns, or a desire to repurpose the space. Removing these features can be a transformative decision, offering opportunities to enhance your property’s functionality, appeal, and value.

Pools Removed was started by Andrew Aksar in 2009 in the aftermath of the National recession. He originally began his hardscaping and landscaping business in 1990. Almost 20 years later with the recession, there was a shift in consumer culture. This spurred a change in Aksar’s offerings, and was the beginning of his removal of pools and tennis courts. Now, almost another 20 on, he continues to offer that same service.

The decision to remove a pool or tennis court is often driven by several factors. Maintenance expenses for cleaning, repairs, can make these features less appealing. Neglected pools and courts can also pose safety risks. Additionally, unused or outdated structures take up valuable space that could be repurposed for a new project.

How does it work? The professionals handle the physical work of dismantling the structures. For pools, this involves draining the water, breaking apart the concrete or fiberglass, and removing the debris. After demolition, the site must be restored by backfilling and leveling the area to ensure it is ready for future landscaping or building projects. Your

basic finish is leveling and then grading the area before grass seed or sod can be put down.

For tennis courts, special equipment is used to break apart the asphalt or concrete once the border fencing has been removed. Removal of debris, offsite, is the same as with pools. The cost of removing a pool or court depends on the pool/court materials, the size, and the complete scope of the project. Most projects are completed within one to two weeks, providing a relatively quick turnaround for homeowners.

Ultimately, removing a pool or tennis court can be a practical and rewarding choice. It opens up possibilities for transforming your property into a space that better fits your needs and lifestyle. When you consider what really matters to you when creating your personal oasis that you’re investing in, you want it to be right.
