T
his month we celebrate weddings. From the first “hello” to the moment you say “I do,” love is a journey. And since weddings are the beginning of that life-long journey of figuring out how to love and serve one another, I also wanted this issue to celebrate marriage as well.
For all of our brides to be, Writer Kathleen Blair shows how to pull off the wedding of your dreams with the latest trends for 2014. From invitations to photography and everything in between, our wedding feature unveils some exciting and unexpected new ideas to make your wedding unique. Can you imagine getting married on top of Camelback Mountain? Well, at the Sanctuary Resort you can. Sanctuary is known for delicious food and outstanding service, but what I found exceptionally breathtaking are the incredible views from the resort and the experience they can provide each couple. Keep reading to see for yourself. A new restaurant in town will be opening early this month and I am excited to tell you about Steak 44. It is located on 44th Street and Camelback and will leave you wanting more. The Mastro family has done it again. Their success with Dominick’s Steakhouse and Ocean Club has extended to this fresh approach on American steakhouse dining. I hope you will love it as much as I did.

dd Steak 44 to the community of culinary excellence gracing the Phoenix area. This must-visit new American steakhouse opened late March on 44th Street and Camelback, in the space formerly occupied by Cork N’ Cleaver, a popular neighborhood steak spot lost in 2010 to a fire. The Mastro family are the masterminds behind Ocean Club and Dominick’s Steakhouse. Mastro’s specializes in luxury destination dining; their locations feature lavish décor and classic upscale American dishes at a special occasion price point. Steak 44 takes its predecessor’s steakhouse niche in new direction, adapting a more comfortable, contemporary atmosphere while retaining the Mastro’s distinctive flair for luxury and fine dining. Though you will not find poolside seating at Steak 44, they have certainly created an upscale urban oasis. Guests will enter through an impressive 3,000-bottle wine vault. The newly remodeled building features a sunken bar area and several vibrant dining rooms, each with an unique ambiance. The dining rooms allow guests to observe the highly experienced staff hard at work behind the glass in the expo kitchen. Executive Chef Marc Lupino of Dominick’s Steakhouse and Steak 44 Head Chef Geoff Baumberger have created a menu with a fresh take on the classic American steakhouse. Guests choose from some of the best in prime steaks and chops in various portion sizes from Petite Filet Mignon, Delmonico, N.Y. Strip, Bone-in Filet Mignon, and Bone-in N.Y. Strip. Alongside a large assortment of side dishes and appetizers like Denver lamb ribs, braised pork belly, fresh oysters, roasted “duck” potatoes, steakhouse stuffing and potatoes with Schreiner’s sausage. Atlantic seafood selections like delicate soft shell crab, Shetland Island salmon and a raw bar featuring an extensive shellfish selection are also available. Guests can cap off their meal with a variety of familiar desserts like grilled banana split, hot fudge sundae, bag of warm donuts, apple pie, New York cheese cake with fresh strawberries, mom’s ice cream cake, coffee cake with cinnamon crumbles, and a local Sonoran Brewing Company root beer floats, all at a more comfortable price than Steak 44’s sister restaurants without sacrificing quality. With their new American cuisine, fashionable ambiance and sure-to-be-impeccable service, Steak 44 will be worth visiting a place that may just become your next Steak 44 weekend haunt. 5101 N. 44th Street, Phoenix

The Ceremony
Two charming locations are available for an outdoor wedding ceremony and each has stunning views and beautiful sunsets. The Paradise View patio and the Wedding Lawn make beautiful locations for the exchanging of vows. The lush lower lawn area is referred to as the “love garden,” and rightfully so for the number of ceremonies performed there over the years. And sunset weddings can be timed to capture the spectacular Arizona sunset sky. “There are actually two Sanctuarys: the Sanctuary by day has the amazing views and is filled with colorful, bright atmosphere. The Sanctuary by night with its low lighting creates a soft, romantic atmosphere with the glittering lights in the distance,” shares Alison Bontrager, public relations and marketing coordinator. I
t’s spring and a time many brides’ dreams come true…marrying a wonderful man and having a beautiful wedding. They’ve spent countless hours looking at bridal magazines, visiting bridal websites and making countless trips to get the right wedding gown, cake, flowers, caterer, music, invitations. Unique ideas can put a personal spin on the traditional things on a bride’s list. We’ve collected some concepts for brides-to-be to consider and help make her day extra special. Invitations
The formal invitations with tissue and multiple envelopes are no longer the norm. With the scrapbooking craze still big, invitations have taken on a new, more personalized look that is custom-made to the couple’s theme and interests. It’s a great time to be creative from the “Save the Date” cards to the actual invitation and R.S.V.P cards. Have fun with color, ribbon, lace, rhinestones and print images to create that special, personal invitation. Photography
Carla and Michael Beedy of Carmichael Studios are a husband and wife team who blend video clips with still photos to bring their photos to life. A beautiful photo of a couple’s first kiss is then put with a video of them dancing. Also something to consider is the first look session where the groom sees his bride for the first time before the ceremony. During this private time that the couple is together, the photographer is quietly behind the scene taking photos and the priceless expressions and moments are captured on film. This is also a perfect time before the ceremony to take many photos including the family before the guests arrive. “We also recommend the bride has a hair and makeup rehearsal to make sure she loves the look and that it will last the entire day,” states Carla. “We give each couple a Wedding Photography Checklist with timeframes so nothing is overlooked and everyone knows what times to show up”. Another idea is to have a surprise video of the bride or groom sharing why they fell in love with the other and to share some things their guests may not know about them. Wedding Cake
Shimmer and glitz on a simple cake has made its debut. Burlap and lace are also making a comeback on the cake scene as well as the frosting look of crepe paper gathered into a flower.
“I’m finding that brides come into my bakery with photos in hand of cakes they’ve seen and love that were on Pinterest,” explains Eva Zasimovich, owner of Sweet’s Unlimited. “The majority of the brides like simple cakes with a little bling.” An initial monogram on the cake is another personalized touch to consider that is the same color as the frosting. Also, many brides still like a small tiered cake and have stacked cupcakes or a petite cake topped with a real flower as centerpieces at each table.
Vows
Many couples still choose to stay with the traditional wedding vows where others want to be more creative and recite vows they have written or a poem they both like that reflects their love for each other. Food
Family style servings brought to the table have become an option to the buffet and formal meals. A table then shares a variety of entrees and vegetables. Another idea growing in popularity is serving a late night snack of chocolate covered pretzels, popcorn in multiple flavors, ice cream cups or pizza. Even the latest craze of food trucks has entered the wedding scene. “Consider having a food truck cater your rehearsal dinner or a bachelorette party. The chef can prepare a special meal for the evening and having a food truck adds to the festivities,” states Lori Baker, owner of Food Truck Caravan.
Flowers
The table centerpieces this year are unstructured, as are bridal bouquets. Jeweltone- colored flowers are being featured. And, terrarium centerpieces are being shown with only a few blooms and lots of greenery under glass in all shapes and sizes. Clustering these as a centerpiece makes a beautiful tablescape. A touch of citrus garland is popular for decorating the bridal table or the cake table. The large bridal boutique has been replaced with a smaller version of different complimentary colors which separate it from those of the bridesmaids. Even petite nosegays are being shown in bridal magazines.
Reception
Romance is back and Big Bands are making the scene along with crystal chandeliers and beautiful china to decorate the table. You can Google to find ideas for a playlist to listen to before handing your personalized selections to a DJ or band. Dancing has grown more and more popular and couples, parents and bridal parties are making surprise debuts on the dance floor. For ideas, you can go to YouTube.com and search wedding dances.
This year, romance has made a larger presence in weddings with the lace, ribbon, sequins and chandeliers. If your budget won’t allow it on a grand scale, then add touches of it to your venue. And, to change things up, have a combination of different seating arrangements for a softer look. Combine round tables in the center with rectangle tables around the perimeter or make another shape with smaller tables staggered. A bridal table can be a small table for two with your bridal party sitting with their family and friends at the other tables. And soft floral patterns are making an appearance in linens.
Attire
Organization
Brides are adding a bit of color to their wedding gown. Many incorporate a touch of blue to complete the tradition from the poem “Something old, something new, something borrowed something blue and a silver sixpence in her shoe.” Before the late 19th century, blue was a popular color for wedding gowns, as evidenced in proverbs like, “Marry in blue, lover be true.” Also popular this year is hints of pink and peach in pale blushes and nudes. “A more formal look is making the scene in men’s attire”, states Danielle Goettl, wedding planner for Outstanding Occasions. “The casual dress attire of suspenders and cotton bowties are being replaced with a more sophisticated look.”
To stay organized, you can order a wedding tote with pockets and compartments for all the samples and notes you have for your big day. Monogramming with the bride and groom’s first name and wedding date is a fun addition. For more information visit Exclusively Weddings on line.
Music
After all the preparation, the day does finally come. Remember, the most important thing is it’s the bride and groom’s special day. Whatever they choose is perfect because it makes them happy. And, the fairy tale wedding the bride has always dreamed of has come true. April 2014 | Paradise Valley Lifestyle 19

Our 6-year-old Daughter’s Wedding Article Casey Gibbons
“D
addy, I want to marry you!” This has to be one of the sweetest statements that come from a young girl’s heart to her dad. Little did we know when one of our daughters said it, she meant it and had a plan to back it up. Kelly Grace was the tender age of six when she shared her desire to marry her daddy, Scotty. Her plans included a full wedding ceremony with a reception. We thought she was the cutest thing so we agreed to move forward not knowing what would unfold. What I didn’t realize was that after the ceremony (complete with a setting sun, scriptures, a ring and a daddy’s kiss), Kelly Grace truly believed she was now married! We knew this shortly after when I found every single one of her clothes in a pile in my closet. She had moved into my room. Furthermore, as she brushed her teeth in our bathroom she exclaimed, “This is going to be great all living in here together!” I began to wonder what all she was expecting. My thinking was interrupted by her sweet voice as she climbed up on my side of the bed. “So where are you going to sleep now, Mama?” Before I could let out an “Okay, this has been fun, but…” her Daddy 20 Paradise Valley Lifestyle | April 2014
said, “Oh sweet, Kelly Grace, you just come on in here with us and tell me your favorite part of our wedding today...” I remained silent but seriously wondered where he was going with this. Much to my delight, Scotty listened to her and reminisced about the wedding. Then he gently explained why the ceremony wasn’t a real wedding but was symbolic of what would perhaps happen for her one day as he prayed the man would love her as much as he did. He also went on to explain what genuine love looks like after the wedding is over and how to live it out through the challenges of life. As parents, we have the priceless opportunity to be with our children and teens in the tender moments of guiding their minds and hearts in the area of relationships. Those times may come after a pretend or a real wedding, after a movie or a song plays, or a crush from school is expressed. No matter when it comes up, I encourage you to be an active and productive voice in directing your children in their understanding of true love and a healthy marriage. All of this begins at an early age as we lead in the developing years of our children so that when the time ar-
rives they have a mature perspective and can make wise choices. Some ideas on how to take advantage of these teachable moments: • Share your life stories with them. Explain things you or others have learned or experienced so they can avoid or attain what you have lived. It may be as simple as explaining, “Looking back at having a boyfriend in early high school, I realized I missed out on some fun things with my friends as well as some freedom because I was too caught up in a relationship that seemed more important but actually ended in heartbreak that wasn’t worth what I had lost.” Or it can be as deep as “Right now we are facing a challenge in our marriage and it is difficult but we are doing all we can to get the help we need and resolve this because this family is worth fighting for.” Just being open and real with your child through life stories teaches volumes about how to make decisions and respond in the future.
Think through the values set before your kids in the music and shows that are apart of their lives. If what they are listening to and viewing is full of relational drama, multiple crushes and breakups, and being overly physical with someone not in a marriage then those standards are being set in their minds. On the other hand, when we see or hear things in the media that are valuable in a relationship such as a couple remaining faithful when it wasn’t easy or being respectful in how they speak of each other, we can highlight that and draw attention to
• Be wise in media choices.
the standard exemplified. Talk, examine, and ask questions about what is placed in front of your child and decide together if it is the value you want them to live out later. • Show respect and honor first. How we treat our children sets a tone for their lives on how they expect to be treated. If we listen to them intentionally, encourage them in their interests, touch them with appropriate parental touch, confront with love, respect their space and items, speak with tones that honor their personhood etc. then they value themselves enough to not let others treat them any differently. Conversely, if we do not value them then anyone who comes along and does show them something they may not have received from us could be someone they decide is best for them when in fact there are other concerns being masked. When a child knows what respect and honor are from first-hand experience growing up in your home then they won’t have to look for it in other places that may not be best for them. They will also know how to express respect and honor to their spouse when the times comes to lead their own home.
So, when you hear those sweet words, “I want to marry you,” remember the teachable moment it offers. We can either cry because they won’t be 6 years old forever, or we can make every effort to pour into them the knowledge they need to be prepared for a relationship one day…or perhaps we both do!

Enjoy the Sleep of a Lifetime on a Vi-Spring bed Article Kory Kilmer
N
ow that spring-cleaning is in full swing, people across the Valley are also taking the opportunity to organize and update the look of their homes. Residents of the Paradise Valley area are never ones to follow a trend, however, but rather they pride themselves on setting them. This then begs the question: what trail is being blazed this spring? “Many people are moving toward contemporary or modern décor,” explains Travis of European Home, a home furnishings store that has been serving the metro area since 1996. “People are still enjoying mixing the old with the new. For example, contemporary art over a striking antique piece, or a transitional or contemporary home using an antique in a room for a conversation piece.”
22 Paradise Valley Lifestyle | April 2014
Of all the rooms receiving this season’s attention, many people are choosing to breathe new life into their bedrooms. And considering more than a third of one’s lifetime is spent sleeping, there is no better place to start than with a new bed. More than ever before, people are aware of the value of a good night’s sleep, and a premium is being placed on the quality of what they are sleeping on. A good mattress can help ease everyday discomforts, helping owners to wake each and every morning rested, refreshed, and ready to attack the day. Enter the Vi-Spring Mattress. “The Vi-Spring beds are so much fun for us to offer to our customers,” says Travis. “We enjoy having a product that can so significantly
improve someone’s quality of life, and we get great testimonials from our customers about how the aches and pains go away after sleeping on their Vi-Spring.” So what sets a Vi-Spring bed apart from the rest? Since their beginnings in London in 1901, Vi-Spring has been a pioneer in the sleep industry. They were the first with the idea of constructing their mattresses of individually pocketed steel springs, and have always been adamant about making their fillings of nothing but high-quality and all-natural materials, which can include British wool, long-stranded horsetail, organic cotton, cashmere, silk, and alpaca among others. The fillings, individual springs, and venting work together to keep the bed fresh and clean on the inside, while the natural materials assist in regulating temperature and wicking away moisture to keep a sleeper from getting too hot and sweaty. The levels of craftsmanship and quality materials combine to help make Vi-Spring a true “lifetime” bed. Handcrafted in their Plymouth factory, studies have shown mattresses as old as 74 years have been found to still be clean inside, as well as still supportive and comfortable. With over a century of customer satisfaction, a Vi-Spring bed might just be the perfect focal point to build around for any bedroom update. And believing that a luxurious night’s sleep should be experienced by everyone, European Home can help find just the right model for anyone, and proudly offer the entire line of Vi-Spring Beds to their clients.
European Home is open Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and is located at 8180 East Frank Lloyd Wright in Scottsdale. For those interested in more information on Vi-Spring Luxury Beds or any other of their unique home furnishings can visit their online showroom at EuropeanHomeUSA.com.

Mom Style Lab Article Becca Mulder | Photography Risa Kostis
M
om Style Lab is an exciting new approach to personal style advice. Launched just a few short months ago, this creative story began with 5-year old Christian and her mom Angela Keller. When they saw the opportunity arise to give fashion advice to some well deserving moms, they took it and started MomStyleLab.com. “Mom Style Lab was created by a mom who loves fashion for moms who love fashion or simply aspire to look their best,” says Angela. “The site appeals to moms with different styles and concerns by presenting a high-low dressing approach and an open sensibility about what works and what doesn’t.” The site also features inspirational ‘Mom Muses’ with great style, from moms such as celebrity jewelry designer Kendra Scott to local Arizona moms who they admire for all they do. Mom Style Lab is a blogzine (not a boutique), however they do recommend and link to clothing and accessories that people can purchase on other shopping sites. When you enter the MomStyleLab.com you will see a variety of fashion categorizes by area of style interests. From Everyday, At Work and Date Night. Topics range from how to dress 10 pounds slimmer and fun dress options for date night with your significant other, to how to dress for casual Fridays at work and afterschool play dates.
• Crop Tops - There are so many ways to wear this look, from showing a sliver of skin to layering it over a longer top. • Mini to Midi Skirts - Skirts for spring range from the super-short miniskirt to ones that hit mid-calf. Although, the most flattering length for most women is still right above the knee. • Cropped Pants - Cropped denim and wide-leg cropped pants are both key styles this season. If you are petite, be careful – you’ll want to stick with a more fitted leg and wear heels as this look will make you appear shorter than you are. • Pastels - Keep this trend from looking too sweet by pairing it with edgier styles like a moto jacket, metal chain jewelry or exotic-skin booties. • White & Black - This color pairing is a favorite of pretty much everyone and oh-so-wearable. For more information about personal fashion advice visit MomStyleLab.com
Follow these spring fashion advice and you can’t go wrong.
• Sheer - From sheer sleeves, shoulders and cutouts to skirts that are sheer on the bottom half, filmy fabrications are a great way to show, but not totally expose, your skin. • Florals - Whether you prefer a hint of floral in an accessory or an all-over print, there are a wide variety of colors and prints to choose from this season. 24 Paradise Valley Lifestyle | April 2014

Your Sleep Schedule and Hormone Balance Is the rhythm of your life helping or hurting your health goals?
Article Jenna Damron
E
xercise and diet are often solely credited as the main vessels through which an individual reaches their goals in the gym. Of all clients we see on a daily basis, 99 percent have two basic goals: fat loss and muscle gain. While diet and exercise are largely important in obtaining these goals, there is one often-overlooked factor that may be hindering you from reaching your goals: sleep. Sleep is the body’s natural reset button. It allows us to regroup, recharge and recover from the physical, social, and psychological pressure we put on it daily. Sleeping affects the levels of many different hormones that can affect weight loss or muscle gain. Leptin and ghrelin are two hormones that can have a huge impact on your weight loss. Leptin acts as a long-term regulator of the body’s energy supply. This hormone suppresses hunger, and therefore induces weight loss. Ghrelin is produced in the lining of the stomach and the pancreas and on the other hand is a very fast acting hormone that plays a role in hunger and meal initiation. Ghrelin levels are highest right before a meal, and lowest right after a meal. A reduced sleep duration does not allow the body to reset these hormones and
26 Paradise Valley Lifestyle | April 2014
regulate them to normal, balanced levels, and therefore may lead to more ghrelin secretion, more eating and hunger, lower leptin levels and satiation, and therefore more weight gain. Another important hormone that is significantly affected by sleep is somatotropin, or human growth hormone. The importance of this hormone is dual-faceted. Growth hormone is produced and secreted by the pituitary gland. It is responsible for cell growth, reproduction and regeneration. During restful sleep, the pituitary gland secretes more somatotropin than it does during your wakeful hours. This means two things for your body. Adequate sleep and somatotropin levels help to repair muscles, which break down during exercise. This is important for those who want to gain muscle mass, but it is also important for those who want to lose weight. Muscle cells burns on average 5x more calories per hour than fat cells do. More muscle mass means more calories burned at rest, and a higher metabolism. Additionally, somatotropin directly affects your metabolism. A higher base metabolic rate
means that you burn off the calories you eat at a higher rate, which translates into easier weight loss. The last hormone that is affected by your sleep schedule is cortisol. Cortisol levels begin to rise approximately 2-3 hours after the onset of sleep, and continue to rise into early morning and early waking hours. Cortisol follows a wavelike pattern in conjunction with your sleep pattern. When your sleep cycle gets thrown off, your cortisol secretion cycle gets thrown off as well. For example, nighttime awakening is followed by a temporary inhibition in cortisol secretion. Cortisol is one of the many hormones that help to regulate the levels of glucose in the blood. It acts as the antagonist to insulin. Insulin stimulates muscle and fat tissue cells to absorb glucose out of the blood stream, while cortisol stimulates the body to conserve glucose in the bloodstream for potential use by vital organs like the brain and heart in stressful situations. Weight loss and gain is a very precarious balance between these two hormones. Prolonged levels of cortisol in the blood can lead to weight gain as unused glucose in the blood stream gets stored in fat cells. If the cortisol-insulin balance in your blood becomes irregular due to an irregular sleep cycle, it can make for a difficult time shedding fat and gaining muscle. In conclusion, there are many different factors that could be affecting your ability to reach your fitness goals. While exercise and diet are the main and obvious contributors, it is important to realize the whole picture. Taking good care of your body through diet, exercise, proper hydration, and a solid 8 hours of sleep per night is the best way to keep your body healthy and achieve your goals in the gym.

Parting Thoughts
A Love to Remember Words Hona Amer
E
veryone sits and waits with anticipation. The door opens and everyone stands to get the first look at the bride walking ever so slowly down the aisle. While the people sitting around me try to see the bride, I steal a quick glance toward the altar. There stands a man who is about to commit his life to his bride. The emotions are written on his face--excitement, fear, joy. His eyes peer through the crowd to get a glimpse. Then, he sees her. Down the long aisle, the one he is waiting for comes closer and closer. His smile tells a story of its own, drawing my attention back to his bride, reminding me that this is their moment, a moment worth celebrating. Somewhere between a beautiful love song and the lighting of the unity candle, the bride and groom say their vows. Some parts are unscripted and from the heart, while other words have been repeated for decades. Through these words that hold so much weight and meaning, they commit to love one another “for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health.” In a beautiful instant, they have joined their lives together. They walk back down the aisle jubilantly. That aisle is just the beginning of their path that will keep moving together as they navigate through days, weeks and months ahead. Those months will turn into years, and every year, there will be one day on the calendar that reminds them of this time. In all of our lives, we need markers to remind us of the beautiful moments in our lives. Weddings and anniversaries need to be
34 Paradise Valley Lifestyle | April 2014
celebrated, because in the midst of the years, life happens. For some, the loss of a family member brings life into full view. For others, a sickness may threaten to tear your marriage apart. In those times when life seems dim and cloudy, we need rays of hope that will spill into the darkest seasons. Anniversaries remind us of commitments that were made through smiles and tears. They give us strength to keep going when the vow of “through sickness and health” finds us in the former instead of the latter. Some anniversaries might consist of a sigh, followed by a declaration that “we made it.” Other years will be full of celebrations of new babies, new jobs, new homes and new grandchildren. It would be wonderful to know the value of love as you live life. Yet, many times, the memories are most cherished when we look through the rearview mirror. Young love is beautiful, but there is something special about love that endures through decades. When two people walk hand in hand through life’s tragedies and triumphs, it’s worth celebrating. It’s worth pressing pause and remembering how one person has so drastically changed another’s life.
