Editor's Letter

I

’m a mom of two precious kids that are 2 and 3 years old (at this point you are thinking “Wow, she has her hands full.” Why, yes, I do and I wouldn't change it for the world.) They consistently bring home macaroni necklaces they made at preschool or paint me a "pretty pretty picture" they insist I tape onto the refrigerator for weeks on end. To me, those macaroni necklaces and messy pictures are more valuable than the expensive artwork taking up space on my walls. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, right?

Art can be found in almost all aspects of life, so conjure up those creative skills we’ve locked away since grade school, and go on a journey with me in finding art in the most unlikely places. This month we are featuring a few forms of art, one being African sculptures from the ZUVAgallery and the other are paintings with the most detailed artwork I've ever seen from Priscilla Nelson in the Nelson Art Gallery. Her paintings are so detailed they look like photos. We also enjoyed discovering the photographers at work at DC Ranch on a Saturday morning. Grab some breakfast at the Breakfast Joint and walk around with coffee in hand. It’s so fun to just slow down and see a number of photographers in their element photographing beautiful families, some seniors portraits, pets, kids and of course weddings. The art found in Scottsdale has taken me by surprise in the last couple of years. I find it is always evolving and changing. I enjoy the different facets of the landscape, finding beauty in the details of the mountains, the openness of the countryside and even those dang cacti. We also have the most unique restaurants that have the ability to make you feel like you’re in the east coast for lunch and California for dinner. For the fun of St. Patrick’s Day, we found a unique and hidden Irish restaurant that will take you right into your festivities. The Temple Sports Grill is tucked away on the Northwest corner of Thompson Peak & Bell. Opened in 2008, this Irish Pub was named after the Temple Bar district in Dublin, Ireland. Read more about it on page 24.

Around Town PV NUROSURGEON INNOVATION HELPS MEMORY Dr. Randall Porter, a resident of Paradise Valley, knew his patients were listening to the information he was providing them, but feared that they may not be comprehending all of it at the time. Studies have shown his fears to be warranted, as they have shown that the average person recalls less than half of the information shared during a doctor’s visit. Illness, anxiety, stress, and compromising medications can all effect recall, and missed information can have disastrous effects So Porter began to develop a system which utilizes a small video camera in the examination room to record discussions, imaging, and demonstrations which could act as a resource for patients to refer back to later on. The patient receives an e-mail with a link to a secure webpage containing the videos that can be viewed from any device with internet capability. The patient can then review the session and if desired, share with family members through the provided link. The Medical Memory by ClarIT-MD™ is currently available in select physicians’ offices in Phoenix including Barrow Neurological Institute and Arizona Orthopedic Associates, and should be in hundreds of more participating physician’s offices by year’s end. For more information on The Medical Memory visit TheMedicalMemory.com.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Tom and Mary Kay Obert have been importing art from Africa since 1996. Until 2013 they maintained a thriving gallery presence at El Pedregal

near the Boulders Hotel in North Scottsdale. After a brief flirtation with retirement, (“Wasn’t for us,” they say) the Oberts opened the all-new, ultra-contemporary Zuva Gallery at the La Mirada Shopping Center located at the NE corner of Pinnacle Peak Road and Pima. The new space is conveniently located near their North Scottsdale home and features a fabulous selection of exquisite original stone sculpture, teak and ebony carvings as well as Belgian canvas giclées. More than 50 pieces of art are always on display. Visitors will also find a small wine bar and lounge area that add to the overall shopping experience.

uva means sunshine in the Shona language of Zimbabwe. Our gallery is one of the rare galleries in the country to focus exclusively on the fine art of Africa. We travel to Africa frequently to search out the best artist with the best work. We personally procure each piece and arrange the packing and shipping to our nearby warehouse. Over the past several years Zuva has placed the stunningly beautiful art of Africa in prestigious corporate and private collections as well as great homes throughout the valley of the sun and the USA. Sculpting in stone is sometimes referred to as “art by subtraction.” Unlike bronze, each piece is an original and requires great skill to sculpt. The artist cannot make a mistake. To paraphrase Michelangelo, “The spirit is in the stone. It is up to the artist to release it.” For more than 70 years the sculptors of Zimbabwe have been releasing the spirits. We are proud to work with and represent the talented artists of Africa. Funds generated through the sale of the art have enriched 12

Every Child Matters FREE ARTS OF ARIZONA OFFERS AVENUES FOR ARTISTIC EXPRESSION FOR ALL

o you enjoy painting or drawing? Do you have a love for music, dance or theater? Dabble with poetry? Thrive on helping others? If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, Free Arts of Arizona might be the place for you. Free Arts is a non-profit organization whose mission is healing abused and homeless children through artistic expression. Its vision is to be the premier resource for the healing effects of the arts in children through programming, advocacy, resource development and education.

ART WITH INTENTION

In 1993, Free Arts of Arizona was inspired by the programs of Malibu, California-based Free Arts, which incorporates concepts from art therapy, along with youth development strategies, to employ “art with intention.” Volunteers are trained to use specific communication tools to build effective relationships with the young people, while working to alter the young peoples’ self-per14

ceptions to enable them to create a positive vision of themselves, as well as their futures. More than 500 trained volunteers serve 7,000 Arizona children each year! According to the American Art Therapy Association, the arts are crucial to the healing process of vulnerable children and help in many ways, such as: • Building self-esteem • Expressing imagination, creativity and emotions through a positive outlet • Developing constructive coping skills • Giving voice to feelings in a safe way • Renewing trust in adults • Allowing children to make their own choices, experience success and understand there is no wrong way to create art HEALING ARTS IN ACTION - A CASE STUDY

A young man named Jared had trouble communicating since he arrived at the group home. He just wasn’t able to put his thoughts and feelings into words and struggled to communicate with his case worker, house manager and the judge. One day, his Free Arts’ weekly mentor led his group in a project that required the youth to draw their fears. Although hesitant at first, Jared began to create a comic strip depicting all of the fear he felt about the safety of his family in Mexico, as well as his future. The comic strip helped Jared express his feelings. After that, he began drawing pictures and posting them around the

group home to let the staff and his housemates know how he was feeling. He also drew pictures for his case worker and for the judge. Through art, Jared found his voice. HOW TO GET INVOLVED

There are many ways to get involved. Free Arts offers a Weekly Mentor Program, Professional Art Series, Free Arts Days and its Camp Series. You may also help support special events, host art supply drives and assist with office projects. Free Arts’ Community Liaison Cherie Scott volunteers as an ambassador for the organization “so that I can share with others about our mission and how they can get involved.” A recent ambassador event included a silent auction at Niemen Marcus in Scottsdale, Arizona. And matter where you live in the Valley, you can pick and choose opportunities available throughout Phoenix and the surrounding area, including Chandler, Mesa, Tempe, Scottsdale, Glendale and Paradise Valley. And right now, there’s a shortage of male mentors. Don’t have an artistic bone in your body? Good news! There is no wrong way to “do art.” The Free Arts staff offers comprehensive training, along with creative resources, to support and assist volunteers. Lesley, a volunteer with the organization, has mentored vulnerable children for more than eight years. When she first got involved with Free Arts, she was “worried about the projects and the supplies and if I would know how to make good projects with the kids… everything you need is right there [at the Free Arts’ office]… and there’s always someone nearby to help... and figuring out what project to do by using the mentor manual.”

Artist's Palette WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO AZ?

After many years primarily living on the East coast and in Costa Rica, the “kids” (now all adults) brought me west! With three of them settling “out West”, my art focus shifted west as well. For my location, Scottsdale had it all: a strong art community, a desert landscape that enthralls artists as light and weather conditions change the view hourly, and a wonderful living environment. DESCRIBE YOUR ART.

I have painted for 40 plus years, and, like many artists, I have explored many mediums and subject matter. My passion and primary medium is oil on canvas. I focus on figurative works in a contemporary-realistic style. My commissioned work includes landscapes and specific large-scale pieces.

INTRODUCING

Priscilla Nelson Johnson WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

PRISCILLA NELSON JOHNSON

Nelson Art Gallery 16622 North 91st Street, Suite 104 Scottsdale, AZ 85260 480.636.1233

My inspiration is people and what they wear. As I observe and interact with those around me, I am intrigued by how people move and the statement they make by what they wear. I love the movement of cloth and the moods that clothing can convey. When I moved here, I became obsessed by water. Something I once took for granted is so striking in its absence. Water has become prevalent in my paintings. The way water channels light creates its own chaotic movement. My poor models are now thrown into the water. WHERE DID YOU STUDY ART?

I am self taught. I did have amazingly talented and passionate art teachers in secondary school. Since the age of 8, art was love at first sight. I had my first “sold out” show at age 15. Needless to say, I never looked back. WHERE CAN PEOPLE VIEW YOUR ART?

After years of working through galleries from my studio in Atlanta, I was in a position that I could open my own gallery combined with a working studio. Galleries are wonderful and I am an avid supporter. But, in my 16

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | March 2015

case, the distance for most, particularly from Atlanta, made the logistics of shipping art and the hours of travel to attend openings and events, a chore. But, more important, my real passion is the interaction of artist with art enthusiasts and collectors. As I look back at my career, I am somewhat surprised to realize the amount of work I have done on a commission basis through direct interaction with collectors and the interior designer/decorator trade. TELL US ABOUT YOUR STUDIO?

I have a “destination art gallery” and working studio off the 101 near The Ice Den and West World. I am at my gallery and studio most days but work primarily on an appointment basis. I also hold several open house events per year, often including an “artist of the month” guest. I consider myself lucky that I can pursue my passion as an artist but not keep “retail hours.” My last event was in early February where I introduced my latest water themed, figurative paintings. My next event will be in the fall. Be on the lookout for details in Lifestyle Publications magazines. ANYTHING ELSE TO ADD?

I think art can enhance everyday life. I have donated over 10 murals to children causes, from hospitals to government agencies that deal with children. My last mural was for CHOA (Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta). I also donate my time to hold art “therapy” sessions for people/groups that can benefit from the calming effects of creating art.

The Art of Luxury Traveling ARTICLE MOLLY WILLIAMS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

I

n my rootless days before our daughter was born, travel was a constant for me. My parents instilled in my brothers and me a love of seeing new places and leaving the familiar behind for short bursts, with the comfort of knowing my home was always waiting for me. As a young adult I was my mother’s frequent travel companion for wine adventures in Europe and beachy outings to Mexico. When I married, my husband and I were inveterate travelers. We thought nothing of taking off at a moment’s notice for a weekend in a coastal town or grabbing a last minute deal on an all-inclusive anywhere. When Natalie arrived fifteen years ago, there was no thought to changing that exis-

tence. After all, she had come to live with us, not the other way around, we reasoned. Adaptation to our wanderlust would be part of her upbringing. In those first few years, as she grew up into our lives, tying us as securely to her routine as a vine winding up the post holds it down to the earth, we slowed our pace. But we soon discovered a great travel truth - a child is eminently portable, and therefore an excellent travel accessory. Granted, they come with a lot of stuff, but in the days before excess baggage fees that was a minor concern. Soon Natalie was as good at airport security and pulling her own travel weight as any jet-setter.

We decided travel could and should be a family affair; a multi-generational adventure that has something for everyone and which allows each to contribute their own preferences and life perspectives.

18

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | March 2015

We decided travel could and should be a family affair; a multi-generational adventure that has something for everyone and which allows each to contribute their own preferences and life perspectives. Traveling together would have the added benefit of providing closeness that only being away from home together can bring,

But the aforementioned mother was not to be left behind. Add to that the desire to spend as much time as possible with our aging parents and the grown daughter, who had by this time relocated to be nearer family. We also wished to forge strong bonds between Natalie and her grandparents and older sister, ones not dependent upon us and only accompanied by turkey or Christmas carols.

not to mention the ability to appreciate one another away from the stressors and habits of our daily lives at home. Grand-tripping was born. Our first adventure with the grandmothers was a week in Mexico. I made the travel arrangements (so as to suit our more

rigid work schedules;) they paid their own way (which they were thrilled to do with the prospect of having the undivided attention of their children and grandchild for a week.) For weeks prior to the trip our regular Sunday dinners were filled with conversation about day trips, restaurants to try, sunscreens and swimsuits, and best of all, memories of trips taken years ago. My daughter heard stories of a runaway trip to Mexico City before my mother’s wedding, and of a road trip vacation involving a bear, a snake and some roadside picnics when her father was a baby. The prospect of traveling all together brought out a side to our mothers that we had rarely seen and Natalie never; their quest for more adventure was not the slightest bit sated by the advancing years. The trip itself we made as painless as possible; direct flights, meals for the plane which I prepared and carried in a collapsible lunch bag, cars to meet us at the airport, private tours at historic places, early dinner reservations, and comfortable accommodations involving kitchens so we could eat at least a few meals comfortably and more affordably at home. We tried to build in nap time (necessary for all of us, not just the baby!) and were completely amenable to spontaneous modifications of the schedule. We practiced much patience with one another, and found that the relaxation of being on vacation brought out the best behavior in us all. Our first grand-trip was a huge success. We have since traveled together to Mexico seven times, to the eastern and western Mediterranean, spots in North Africa, all over Italy, along the St. Lawrence River from Montreal to Boston, to the Amalfi Coast, the volcano of Vesuvius and its ruined Pompeii, to New York and to the islands of Malta and Sicily. We have been in art galleries in Florence, the armory of the Knights Templar in Malta, and the souk in Tunisia (where the combined shopping influences of both grandmothers and daughter conCONTINUED >

vinced me that splurging on a gorgeous Persian rug was a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity - they were right.) We have attended Mass in cathedrals grand and churches tiny all over the world, including the oldest extant church in North America where Mass is still said in French, and the lovely cathedral of Monaco, where Prince Albert was also a worshipper that day and Princess Grace’s tomb ever bears fresh flowers. One of our most memorable days was a private (well, as private as you can get with 5000 other people) audience in Vatican City with Pope Benedict on my mother-in-law’s 83rd birthday. Truly an experience none of us will ever forget, whether we have perhaps a dozen active years left, or our entire lifetime stretches out before us. We have discovered that cruising is a particularly painless way to travel with multiple generations. Advantages include only unpacking once, familiar food (especially wonderful when dealing with sometimes tricky and always finicky older and younger tummies) and best of all, predictable plumbing. My mother and I once paid admission to a public W.C. in Italy which we discovered to be a row of holes 20

in a concrete floor with heel grooves thoughtfully placed beside. Do not underestimate the soothing power of American bathroom engineering. On a cruise ship my husband dances divinely with both his mother and his daughter, my mother-in-law can entrance the piano bar with her singing, and my daughter learns the exquisite table manners and conversational skill that come from her grandmothers’ combined 170-plus years of ladyhood. I have the privilege of watching her bloom under their adoring attention while they get to pass on cherished family stories and memories. They are relaxed knowing every detail of travel will be handled by someone who knows their breaking points and makes sure their needs are met. We are currently planning a trip to Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. While I don’t expect the “moms” to join us snorkeling, they will no doubt love to tell us stories of previous visits to the islands or of the

long-deceased grandfather my daughter never knew who served near there in WWII. That’s what grand-tripping does for us; we each will have the time to do what makes us happy and relaxed while traveling, while indulging in the ultimate luxury of being with those we love most. My daughter gets to bank these precious days with her grandmothers as security against a future when they may be too frail to join us, or when she is eventually traveling with her own family. There are many legacies I hope we are able to leave her, but this is the best - that of a lifetime of loving going and doing, with those she loves, across all our generations.

rt comes in all shapes and sizes and in amazing colors. Some art comes through nature, as found in our incredible sunsets and mountain ranges. Talented artists are featured at the local galleries. Yes, everywhere you turn, there seems to be pieces of amazing artwork intertwined with daily life. As you drive around town, you no doubt have seen many art pieces in more obvious places. But, there is so much more to be discovered.

Public Art The Scottsdale Public Art has done a great job of selecting over a 100 pieces of permanent and temporary art that are displayed throughout the city by national and international artists. The permanent art includes two beautiful bus shelters found at Goldwater and Indian School, and Goldwater and Camelback by artist Kevin Berry. The Mustang Wall found in Mustang Library is by Ken Williams. At 90th Street and Shea you’ll find artwork called Desert Monsoon and Desert Moods by Joe Tyler. The works of a few talented artists have been installed at the Scottsdale Waterfront. A few sculptures can be viewed at the Scottsdale Civic Center Park, which includes the Love sculpture by Robert Indiana. Jeff Zischke artwork Impulsion is displayed at West World. At the Granite Reef Senior Center you’ll find Michael Anderson’s Quarter Ring Progression. Along the Frank Crerie Nature Trail, at George “Doc” Cavalliere Park, is more work by Jeff Zischke, Sonoran Seed Pods. And, the list goes on. “One of Scottsdale Public Art’s missions is to support and encourage a strong, vital regional artist community,” states Donna Isaac, Director of Scottsdale Public Art and Vice President Scottsdale Cultural Council. The temporary work by Pittsburgh artist Toby Fraley was created with the premises that there are just too many choices in life. The art piece is called, “The Artwork Forge” and it simplifies the choice of choosing art for one’s home. Fraley created a machine which scans social media and news websites for trending styles yet keeps in mind established works of art. Then an original print is produced for the user. The project is co-commissioned by Scottsdale Public Art and 22

Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts

This wonderful museum is located by Scottsdale Civic Center Park and rotates nine to twelve exhibits per year. The museum offers a diverse program that includes artwork, music, literature, dance and film. Many opportunities are available to learn new things – Japanese flower arranging, science of optics, piñata making and information about food production and distribution. There are four main galleries that have kept the original footprint of the movie theatre that was previously located in the building. A space exhibit greets you when you enter by Arizona artist James, called Knight Rise. It is located in the Museum’s outdoor Nancy and Art Schwalm Sculpture Courtyard. There you can seat on a bench and view the sky through the incredible work of this talented artist who is recognized for his work with light as his medium.

Built in 1975, and known then as the Scottsdale Center of the Arts, it is located at the Scottsdale Civic Center Park. The 853seat Virginia Piper Theatre was renovated in 2009 and is a stateof-the-art theater. It is recognized as one of the premier performing arts halls in the western United States for its intimacy, acoustics and comfort. Another theater, Stage 2, is located in the building and seats 137. The Scottsdale Civic Center Amphitheater has a capacity for 1,800. Over a 1,000 indoor and outdoor performances, educational programs, festivals and other events take place annually. Many recognized artists have performed there – Clint Black, Roberta Flack, Vanessa Williams, Steve Martin, Chris Botti, Bernadette Peters and Patti LuPone to name a few “Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts provides a stage for a wide range of artistic voices and perspectives, creating shared, inspiring experiences for our community that celebrates artistic excellence and cultural awareness. We’re proud to present a season that is as diverse as it is exhilarating, and to partner with so many wonderful artists and organizations,” says Cory Baker, director of the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. To tie into the Scottsdale Center for Performing Arts’ Broadway series, Scottsdale Public Art, along with IN FLUX Initiative, brings a nationally recognized temporary installation program this spring. The exhibit is called Broadway behind the Scenes and can be seen at Gallery@The Library, which is located in the Scottsdale Civic Center Library.

Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day ARTICLE KATHLEEN BLAIR

I

f you are like most people, when you think of the month of March you automatically think of St. Patrick’s Day. It’s a day celebrated in many countries. Here’s a little bit of trivia that explains who St. Patrick was and why we celebrate his day. It began back in the sixth century when a young lad named Patric, was kidnapped by Irish pirates from his home in Great Britain. He was only 16 years old when he was brought to Ireland and forced to work as a slave tending sheep. For six years he would tend the sheep alone on a mountainside. There he prayed for God’s help, even though he wasn’t raised in the faith. In his solitude, Patrick developed a deep faith in God. One day, he heard a voice telling him about a ship that was leaving Ireland for Great Britain. So, Patrick managed to escape from his master and travel to a port where he convinced the captain to take him aboard. Upon arriving back at Great Britain, Patrick continued pursuing his faith and studied to become a bishop. He then had a dream where he received a letter from the people of Ireland begging him to return. He returned to Ireland as a missionary and during his 30 years there, Patrick established 300 churches and was instrumental in converting 135,000 people to Christianity. He was canonized by the Catholic Church into sainthood and became the Patron Saint of Ireland. A celebration of his life is held each year on the anniversary of his death, March 17, 461 A.D. Today, St. Patrick’s Day has become an international festival to celebrate the Irish culture where everyone wears green, watches parades and enjoys Irish food and beverages.

A LOCAL CELEBRATION

Tucked away on the northwest corner of Thompson Peak Parkway and Bell Road you’ll find Temple Bar Sports Grill, a local favorite who also is known for its St. Patty’s Day celebration. The restaurant is named after the Temple Bar district in Dublin, Ireland, where the owners visited and wanted to duplicate the same ambiance of this upscale Irish pub before they opened in 2008. On St. Patrick’s Day, a special Irish Menu is prepared to honor the day with many Irish favorites: Corned Beef and Cabbage; Shepherd Pie and Fish and Chips to name a few. For beverages, you’ll find Irish Guinness and Jameson Irish whiskey. WHERE FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS MEET

Temple Bar Sports Grill is a great place to visit for lunch, dinner, weekend brunch or to watch a game. There are 23 televisions indoors and three located on their oversized patio, which also has a great view of the McDowell Mountains. General Manager Ed Ramos has been with Temple Bar Sports Grill for the last four years. He has been instrumental in bringing new items to the menu. “We want to be the neighborhood go-to place, where families come after a school game or on the weekend for lunch and to watch a sporting event,” shares Ramos. “We’re the local place where you’ll see many of your friends and neighbors.”

soned chicken then wrapped in bacon and grilled. And, the onion rings are jumbo in size and very good.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

From the wide variety of items listed on the menu, it would be hard not to find a few of your favorites listed. To start off, there are 20 appetizers to choose from. I sampled the Smothered Tater Tots, which are covered with cheddar cheese and crispy bacon. They are tasty and the serving has enough to share. You won’t go wrong ordering the delicious Jalapeno Grilled Poppers, which are fresh Jalapenos stuffed with cream cheese and sea-

The soup of the day is Beef Barley on Monday; Chicken Rice on Tuesday, Tomato on Wednesday, Chicken Tortilla on Thursday and Clam Chowder on Friday. There’s a nice selection of salads, which include Caesar, House, Southwest Cobb, Village Chef, Bistro Steak, Asian Chicken, Temple Shrimp, Kale and Taco. A good variety of hot and cold sandwiches plus wraps are listed. I sampled the Rueben, which is fresh, house made and very lean. It is served with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, Thousand Island dressing on grilled marble rye bread. It also came with a serving of Cole Slaw on the side. CONTINUED >

Autism and the Extended Family: A Guide for People Who Love Someone with Autism WRITTEN BY RAUN MELMED AND MARIA WHEELER (MARCH 1, 2015) CO-AUTHOR OF “SUCCEEDING WITH DIFFICULT CHILDREN,” DR. RAUN MELMED, RELEASES AUTISM AND THE EXTENDED FAMILY: A GUIDE FOR PEOPLE WHO LOVE SOMEONE WITH AUTISM THIS MONTH.

A

fter publishing numerous articles and traveling the world lecturing on the topics of child development and learning, Melmed noticed a lack of resources for extended family members after an autism diagnosis. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins are all affected by this disorder but are often left feeling helpless or frustrated. Autism and the Extended Family: A Guide For People Who Love Someone With Autism explains the clinical diagnosis and describes some of the difficulties a child with autism may have with communication and social functioning. These behavior challenges may not be understood by family members unfamiliar with autism, or a parent’s management style may not be supported if a family member is in denial regarding an autism diagnosis. Melmed describes different treatments, and provides suggestions for conflict resolution within the family. He points out that by educating the extended family members, those family members can then educate others. While the physical, emotional and financial strain that parents of children with autism face is often known within the family, too often family members are unaware of how they can help. Melmed provides several short case examples of opportunities and ideas of how each family member can assist according to their own personal strengths. Full of information, the book contains an extensive resource sec-

tion and describes how to create an Autism Care Tool Kit, as well as provides suggestions on how to handle rude comments in public, how to handle bullying, and advice for special events and holidays. Autism and the Extended Family: A Guide For People Who Love Someone With Autism emphasizes the importance of building a support group within the family, making this release a necessity for any family member interested in educating themselves about autism and how they can help their loved ones. Melmed, medical director of the Melmed Center and a developmental and behavioral pediatrician, founded Developmental Pediatric Associates now known as the Melmed Center, in 1989. He is a co-founder and the medical director of the Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center and is an adjunct senior researcher at the Translational Genomics Institute in Phoenix. He is a member of the Society for Behavioral Pediatrics and the Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine, the Ambulatory Pediatric Association and he is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is a board certified pediatrician and is also certified as a Diplomate in Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics. Melmed has been instrumental in setting up nationally recognized physician training programs for the early identification of infants and toddlers with developmental and behavioral concerns and has authored a program geared toward the early screening of autism spectrum disorders. He resides in Scottsdale.

Parting Thoughts

Everything Is Art ARTICLE JIM COSGROVE

A

ccording to my ten-year-old daughter, everything is art. Everything. A crumpled up candy wrapper lying among the trash in the kitchen waste basket, a shriveled and spotted banana peel, and a milk carton could all be considered works of art. And, in her mind, everyone is an artist – soccer players, cooks, barbers, plumbers. “Art is everywhere,” she says, looking around the kitchen. “This spoon, the napkins, the microwave. There isn’t one thing that isn’t art. Someone has put time into designing them. Someone made them.” And this is precisely why I love hanging out with my kids, because through their eyes, everything is beautiful and everyone is creative. I have yet to meet a child who doesn’t intuitively get this. They paint, build, pretend, laugh, run, kick, and sing off-key at the tops of their lungs. Nearly everything they do is an expression of creative energy. The same is true for adults, we just categorize it differently. Somewhere between finger painting and a high school diploma we start judging and compartmentalizing what is good and bad – beautiful and ugly – worthy and unworthy. Slowly we learn to shut down our artist and start defining ourselves with less risky (and less interesting) labels like student, employee, worker, or staff member. Seriously, I don’t think anyone strives to go through life as a “human resource.” 34

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | March 2015

The exciting truth is that there’s a giddy child artist lingering in every adult – no matter what we “do” for a living. As my daughter pointed out, the man who fixes our furnace is an artist because he’s really good at it, and he seems to enjoy himself. “You’re an artist if you have a passion for something and you love doing it,” she says. “If you’re not passionate for it, then there is something else that is your art.” Artistry is what allows us to let go, get messy, break the rules, draw outside the lines, and live. Just imagine how boring and drab and devoid of color life would be without the ability to recognize that everything our senses can absorb was designed by nature or by humans to be functional and esthetically pleasing. Connecting with that creativity takes courage. It requires that we put ourselves out there, and, in most cases, it requires failure. Without failure, we can’t succeed. We have to fall on our faces and get back up. Kids get that. They’re oozing with courage, and they’re falling all the time – literally and figuratively. But as we mature and master balance and the skill of walking, we assume that there’s no room for falling. That’s rubbish. Go ahead, fall. Make a fool out of yourself. Dare to rediscover your passion and set your artist free.
