hether you are a stay-at-home mom or the owner of a multimillion-dollar company, creativity and inspiration begins at home. I love nothing more than redecorating a room in my home. Right now I’m working on a new reading area in my toddlers’ rooms. From Pinterest to endlessly strolling through the aisles of Target and everything inbetween, I draw creative inspiration from anywhere and everything. Creativity doesn’t always come naturally to me, but that isn’t the case for wedding dress designer extraordinaire Donna Berry. Donna goes beyond the runway and creates custom wedding gowns from her at-home studio. Donna got her start when she decided to follow her dreams and gave up law school to begin an apprenticeship at Mon Atelier, a small fashion salon on the west side of Los Angeles. She eventually landed her dream job with at Monique Lhuillier. But I will hold myself back and keep the rest a surprise. Besides, writer Jennifer Adamson tells it best anyway! Let’s venture into the homes and life of Charles Pavillion, world-renowned interior designer who got his start at the age of 12 when a close friend of the family recognized Charles had an innate design sense. Just reading his story will give you inspiration for your own homes, lives and work. Through good design, great proportion and how to have flare, Charles shares all the people and places he draws inspiration from and I even managed to get some interior designing advice especially for our readers, YOU! I had so much fun with this month’s issue! I love going on a journey into the lives of each person I interview to see how they got their start and the hard work and determination they have given to make their success a reality.

lthough Bluewater Grill is a chain with locations dotting the California coast, this family-owned and operated business stands on its own. General Manager Jeff Martineau has been in the building for 16 years, working there when it was formerly the Fish Market, owned and operated by the current owner’s father-in-law. But what sets Bluewater apart from other seafood restaurants in the Valley? “Quality and price point,” Martineau says. “We offer the best seafood we can at the fairest price possible.” Beyond the incredible value, Martineau also points out that the restaurant offers a variety of seafood options, from a full sushi menu and raw oyster bar to a retail market stocked with fish, oysters, lobsters, and homemade New England and Manhattan Clam Chowder. Beginning in November, customers will be able to purchase fresh, whole Dungeness crabs as well. All varieties of seafood are trucked in six days a week from Santa Monica Seafood in L.A., as well as flown in from Pacific Seafood in the Pacific Northwest. And the business only sources sustainable seafood, something that is very important to them. 12

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | September 2014

“We want to be in business for a long time,” Martineau jokes. “But seriously, we feel like we have an obligation to make the most responsible choices we can when it comes to purchasing seafood. For instance, you won’t find Chilean seabass on the menu. Do we like Chilean seabass? Yes, but it’s not responsible. And we haven’t sold orange roughy here for over 10 years.” My dining experience started off with one of Bluewater’s most popular sushi rolls, the Senorita Roll, featuring tempura shrimp, krab mix and avocado topped with ahi sashimi, sriracha and eel sauce. The sashimi was extremely fresh and the heat from the sriracha mixed with the sweetness of the eel sauce and the crunch from the tempura blended together to create the perfect salty, sweet, spicy bite. Next, I indulged in two ponzu-style Grassy Bar oysters from Northern California prepared with a ponzu/sriracha sauce and topped with fish roe. The oysters were brinier than their often more popular Bluepoint counterparts, which I found to be a delicious surprise. Moving on to the main course, I was delighted when a beautiful plate of Grilled

Australian Barramundi sitting on a bed of coconut jasmine rice, topped with a mixture of baby arugula and crab and drizzled with a house-made honey sherry vinaigrette was set down in front of me. Aside from the pristine plating, the fish itself was white, succulent and perfectly cooked, and I couldn’t get enough of the sweet and tart sauce.

The Seared Eastern Sea Scallops were also cooked to perfection – not too chewy, not too soft – served with roasted shallots, spinach, and oyster mushrooms in a sherry beurre blanc sauce. This is one of Martineau’s favorite dishes, and I can certainly taste why. These two dishes blew me away, but the final course stole the show. There’s nothing like a cup of homemade New England Clam Chowder and a proper Lobster Roll to win the heart of this former Cambridge, Mass., resident. The perfect blend of cream and broth with tender clams and potatoes, the chowda was to die for. Follow that up with a specially-made New England-style bri-

oche bun split, buttered and overflowing with succulent claw and knuckle meat tossed in a light mayo, onion and salt and pepper dressing, and you can’t believe you’re not at the Cape. Martineau says the Lobster Roll has been a popular addition to the lunch menu, which also includes an assortment of sandwiches, fresh fish tacos, and the fan favorite and seafood restaurant staple, Fish and Chips. “We try to be as authentic as possible with food that is simply but classically prepared,” Martineau shares, “The food speaks for itself, and that’s what seafood lovers appreciate.” The restaurant’s newest recruit, Executive Chef Jamie Gallimore (formerly of Destination Royal Palms and the Hermosa Inn) has been testing new dishes for months. A few of his contributions so far have included a gluten-free menu, more vegetarian items, and his own homemade focaccia bread that has inspired new Chicken Focaccia Sandwich and Shrimp Flatbread menu items. For the kiddos, Bluewater offers healthy menu options like grilled items with carrots and grapes for sides. It truly is a casual dining experience for the whole family. The building also houses several banquet rooms, including an upstairs event area with its own bar and restrooms, perfect for weddings, conferences and holiday parties. No time for dinner? Belly up to the bar for happy hour Monday-Friday from 3:30-6:30 p.m. or Saturday and Sunday from noon-5 p.m. Bluewater Grill Small plates of Calamari Fritte, Black1720 E. A Three-Generation Family Restaurant Article Becca Mulder | Photography Provided

n June of 1981 the dream of owning a restaurant became a reality. Randy’s Restaurant is just the beginning of what makes this hands on, hard working family so unique. Owners Lester and Marie Bammesberger have owned diners in Florida, Arizona and Ohio. Needless to say that diners are no longer a hobby but now a way of life for this now three-generation family. Shortly after getting married, daughter Andrea Cole and her husband, Randy, were given the opportunity to move to Arizona from Boulder, Colo., to help run and support the family business. They both jumped on the opportunity to learn the restaurant business while raising a family in AZ. “Randy and I spent so much time at the restaurant that had we both not been involved we would have never seen each other,” says Andrea. “Many of our customers became and still are our very close friends. My parents became a huge source of suc-

cess for us, not just in teaching us the business but also in helping take care of our daughter so that we could work.” In 1963 Lester and Marie built and opened Lester’s Diner on Grand Avenue in Phoenix. It’s now called Mel’s Diner and

“We realized very quickly that owning a restaurant was a way of life not just a job.” – Andrea Cole was used in the television show “Alice,” as well as the movie. Through the years and ups and downs of owning diners in Arizona and across the country, this unique family continues to keep first things first by honoring the importance of family.

“Our daughter, Angie, literally grew up in the restaurant,” Andrea explains. “She worked there from the time she could work, on up through high school and college. She now serves the role of co-manage with her husband.” When Angie was a toddler the restaurant business was all she knew. If Grandma and Grandpa could watch her, Angie would be content in her play pen with lots of toys in whatever section of the restaurant her mom, Andrea, was working in. Andrea explains that she felt so blessed to have wonderful customers that would come in a play with Angie while they ate as if she was their own granddaughter. As Angie grew up she would recruit her college friend, Garret, to come and work at the restaurant with her. Soon became Angie’s husband and part of the family business. He has taken on a strong managing role and will

continue to take on more responsibility as Andrea and Randy work less. “We feel so blessed to be able to work together with Angie and Garrett the same way Randy and I worked with my mom and Dad to learn and grow,” says Andrea. “We all live in Paradise Valley and we share a home with my mom and live just down the street from the kids, so we June 14–September 15, 2014 are often found sitting around the table discussing restaurant issues.” Lester but his $ passed away in 1999 PER UNIT* heart and zeal forFOLLOWING Randy’s Restaurant ON ANY OF THE PRODUCTS WITH THEis POWERRISE MOTORIZED SYSTEM: still going strong. hat do you do when fashion designer Monique Lhuillier asks you to rework the hem on a bridal gown at the last minute? You fill a bathtub with tea and dye it the way she’s requested – even if it is two o’clock in the morning. With less than 24 hours before the dress hits the runway at New York Fashion Week, every second counts. Donna Berry’s ingenuity saved the show six years ago when she worked for one of the biggest names in bridal. Today, she’s saving the day for wives-to-be as they place their dreams for the perfect wedding dress in her hands. Donna runs a custom bridal and evening gown atelier from her home in Paradise Valley. “I’ve always been interested in fashion,” she says. “When I was younger, I was very interested in art and color and was always putting together color combinations, thinking about what would go together.” (Right down to redressing the characters in her favorite childhood cartoon, Beverly Hills Teens.) “They had really great clothes, but I remember thinking their outfits would look better if they did this and this.” Donna’s first real attempt at tailoring was in high school. She sewed her own clothes and once shortened a jacket to wear to a formal dance. “All my girlfriends were really impressed, and that’s when I started feeling like I could probably do this,” she says. ‘LITERALLY MY DREAM JOB’

Fashion designer creates custom gowns from home Article Jennifer Adamson | Photography Provided

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | September 2014

Despite her growing confidence, Donna’s mother encouraged her to pursue a more practical career after finishing her undergraduate studies in English, so she turned to law. During her two years as an attorney, she met her husband, Ryan, who pled his case for why Donna should return to her roots in fashion. She had no objections. While attending the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, Donna did an apprenticeship at Mon Atelier, a small fashion salon on the west side of Los Angeles, where she studied the art of couture. From patternmaking to hand stitching, she learned how to customize designs to meet the needs of individual clients, keeping in mind their measurements and tastes. Little did she know, a design position at one of the foremost houses of bridal couture was about to open up, and she’d now have the skill set to apply. “Working at Monique Lhuillier was literally my dream job, so I was ecstatic when I got it,” says Donna.

Her responsibilities included collaborating with patternmakers and seamstresses, sourcing fabrics and trims, assisting with fittings, and sketching. (Her illustrations have been featured in fashion magazines and bridal boutiques worldwide.) Donna’s favorite memories are of when Monique would send her to the FIDM library. Studying books and collections of other famous designers gave her inspiration for executing Monique’s visions for celebrities and runways. “Monique would come in and say, ‘I’m thinking 1950s with an edge of floral,’ and we’d have to come up with all these sketches,” says Donna. “The biggest challenge would have to be changing the direction of a collection just weeks before Fashion Week.”

Donna’s 10 Rules for Brides 1. Figure out the theme and mood of your wedding first, and let those ideas guide you in planning. For instance, you don’t want to wear a satin ball gown and a tiara if “Woodland Romance” is your vision. Think of the event as a whole, from invitations to floral arrangements. 2. Not all whites are created equal. Make sure the shade of white you pick compliments your skin and hair color. The right white can even brighten your complexion. 3. If you’re planning to slim down before the big day, do it before you choose your gown and especially before your final fitting. Not all dresses you try on will look great at every weight, so the closer you are to your goal weight, the better

rom the energy and sophistication of New York to a strong ref lection of the American historical roots of the Southwest, the homes featured in this article were made to fit the personality and drive of the interior designer himself. Charles Pavarini started in the interior design world at the age of 12 when a good friend of his family recognized his innate design sense. When family and friends started seeking design advice from him at such a young age, as this young man knew there had to be a gift in seeing good design that would set his career in motion. Beginning his pursuit, Charles left Arizona after just one year at A.S.U. to pursue a career in theater. After coming off a tour with the legendary Ann Miller, he enrolled at the New York School of Interior Design and graduated with the Bronze Medal of Achievement. Charles 20

attests his design eye to his paternal grandmother, who exposed him to style and taste from a very young age. “She was extremely creative and had a keen sense for the arts. She taught me how to see good design, great proportion, and how to have flare. She also exposed me to antiques, to museums and to the decorative arts,” says Charles. Charles enjoys his time split between his three homes; he works to make his homes have the feeling of their surroundings. First and foremost his home right here in Paradise Valley is what he refers to as his “Desert Retreat.” His home in Paradise Valley, although contemporized, embodies the warm climate and desert. “Ultimately, I want my personal home in Paradise Valley to be contemporary in feeling yet demonstrate a strong reflection of its Southwest American historical roots,” explains Charles.

In his Pre-War era New York apartment, Charles contrasts Pre-War architecture with contemporary flair. The apartment speaks to the sophistication and energy of New York city where inspiration is everywhere. He explains that he has a few Mid-Century antiques, which help to make it feel current. Charles enjoys summers in his boathouse lake cottage in Connecticut. The cottage is a charming adaptation of a New England lake home with collections of American Pottery, turn-of-the-century paintings, and impressive comfort. Though these homes are totally different in style and location, Charles draws creativity and inspiration from each home through the different seasons of the year. Currently, he is in the Mediterranean Sea finding inspiration from ev-

ery port he visits. He has contemplated writing a book on inspiration as he has extensive material on the subject. Charles future vision for design is to see much more technology integrated into our homes and lives. He believes we will see many more ‘’smart-homes” and interactive spaces no matter what the style or influence. “Technology is here to stay, so we need to embrace it in smart and intelligent ways. The integration should be seamless and affordable. I personally find inspiration in nature and especially in the work of other creative people who have shaped the beauty around us. Inspiration is abundant if we see, listen and feel to the fullest,” says Charles.

Interior Design Advice List your priorities for a project, work to understand your needs and desires, pay great attention to lighting as it can make an Interior successful or totally destroy your intentions for the space. Budgets are always a major concern so my biggest advice is to engage a professional interior designer to help you sort out your concerns and to head you in a direction that will result in a cohesive interior on time and on budget.

An Extraoliveordinary Destination Article Kathleen Blair | Photography Provided

T

he combination of agriculture and tourism has created an Italian word, agriturismo, which basically means creating a way for people to learn how foods are produced and then allowing them a way to enjoy the results. That is exactly what you’ll find when you visit the Queen Creek Olive Mill, in Queen Creek, Ariz.. For the last decade, Owner Perry Rea has been producing the high quality virgin olive oil and you get to enjoy it right there in a variety of different ways. How It All Began

Originally born in Detroit, Michigan and raised in Canada, Rea’s father owned an automotive parts business. Years later, Rea took over the business, moved it to Auburn Hills, Michigan, and grew the business to include 13 locations. After selling the business, Rea and his family visited Arizona in 1997 for a family vacation. They noticed the numerous olive trees and, his wife, Brenda, suggested they move to Arizona and make olive oil. That idea struck something inside of Rea, who has Italian heritage. In 1998 he relocated his family to Arizona. Rea started making olive oil as a hobby. He met Beau MacMillan while they played in the same recreational hockey league. When MacMillan, who’s the executive chef 22

at the Sanctuary resort, heard Rea made olive oil he asked if he could have a bottle to try. One thing led to another, Rea appeared on the Sonoran Living talk show and word spread about this locally produced olive oil and orders started coming in. Rea and his wife originally planted 1,000 olive trees of seven varieties and now have 7,600 trees of 16 varieties on their 100 acres of land. Queen Creek Olive Mill produces the only extra virgin olive oil in the state. Two and a half tons of olives are pressed per hour in an olive press that was imported from Turkey. “My business is an extension of my passion,” states Rea. “We strive to produce the highest quality or products from our farm to your table.” Yes, Rea is living the American dream. He took his passion and grew it into a wonderful, locally owned family business. He and his wife even become credential Certified Extra Virgin Olive Oil Sommeliers, two of 20 in the world by the International Olive Oil Council. Marketplace

Over the years, the little tin shed that Rea built (he had to open the door let in light) has grown and grown. Now, there is a full retail section, a bakery section, a wine

section, a bath and beauty section, an eatery, a coffee bar, a gelato bar and pizza oven. In the marketplace, you will find a wonderful selection of products. It’s fun sampling the different flavors of olive oils and infused vinegars, barbecue sauces, stuffed olives, tapenade spreads and the three signature oils (delicate, balanced and robust). There is also a wine section which includes 20 wines from Arizona wineries. In addition, there are private label sparkling wines in almond, peach and raspberry flavors. Olivespa – Home & Beauty

Brenda started making lotions and lip balm in her home as a family project since they were in the business. She knew how good the extra virgin oil is for the skin especially in the dry Arizona climate. Uscontinued >

Now, there are 25 products which include oils, butters, soft scrubs, lotions, soaps, balms, men’s products and candles. The candle scents are lavender, white wedding, birthday cake, cucumber sage, Turks & Caicos and vanilla bean. Partners in Passion

Rea and his family believe in supporting other locally produced products so you will find them on the shelves in the marketplace. Partners in Passion include Nicholos Meterra Bake House, in Coolidge, who makes the bread; Valley Honey Company, in Gilbert, provides honey; and Ceterria Candy, in Glendale, makes a sea salt dark chocolate bar infused with extra virgin olive oil. Bill and Terri Mohrweis, owners of Superstition Coffee, roast their beans and operate their business right there at Queen Creek Olive Mill. They were the first in Partners in Passion program. And, they roast some flavorful coffee beans.

Let’s Talk Olive Oil

Rea has strict guidelines when making his oil – they must have the three good characteristics and not the bad characteristics. The three good characteristics are fruitiness, bitter and pungent. Olives are a fruit so olive oil should have a bit of fruitiness to it. Olives are bitter, and, therefore, the oil should taste a little bitter. And, olives are pungent with a peppery characteristic that you will feel at the back of your throat when you swallow the oil. The bad characteristics include it having a fusty smell or taste, like sweaty socks; a musty taste that happens when olives are stored in a humid area so mold, yeast and fungi form; a vinegary smell and taste due to the olives fermenting; a metallic taste that happens from prolonged time in metals; and a rancid taste that is the result of oil that has gone bad. Queen Creek Olive Mill Family

There are 125 employees who contribute to the success of the business. Daughter, Sydney, runs the Biltmore location and is the wine buyer. His sons, Angelo and John, help out where needed. Reformed Pilates A Boutique Fitness Studio Article Becca Mulder

“Good things come to those who hustle.” – owner, laura morgan

eformed Pilate’s is a boutique fitness studio that focuses on providing its members with a high-intensity work-out on custom reformers. The Reformed workout fuses classic pilates techniques with a high-energy cardio workout to promote overall flexibility, increased muscle tone, core strength and a higher level of endurance. Reformed focuses on two core principles: slow movements and quick transitions. The goal is to lengthen the muscles through slow movements and strengthen them through quick transitions. This approach results in the long and lean physique. Isn’t that what we all crave and love! Reformed Pilates opened in June of last year, and this brother and sister duo team of owners, Peter and Laura Morgan, have made their dreams of owning their own business come true. They are excited to announce that in September they will be opening their second location in Central Phoenix, located on the Northeast corner of 7th Street & Missouri. “The favorite thing about owning my own business is I like knowing that at the end of the day what you put into it is what you will get out of it. At Reformed, we like to say that Good things come to those who hustle,” says Laura. At Reformed Pilates, they offer spin and 30/30 classes (30 minutes of spin combined with 30 minutes of pilates). Existing and new clients Reformed Arcadia will have the opportunity to take 4290 E. Indian School Rd. #111 classes at both locations. Phoenix, AZ 85018

Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons

September 20-28

Phoenix

Arizona Restaurant Week

Oh, what a story. Frankie Valli, who came to fame in 1962 as the lead singer of the Four Seasons, is hotter than ever in the 21st century. Thanks to the volcanic success of the Tony-winning musical Jersey Boys, which chronicles the life and times of Frankie and his legendary group, such classic songs as “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Rag Doll,” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” are all the rage all over again. As the play enters its third sold-out year on Broadway, the real Frankie Valli is packing concert halls coast

Parting Thoughts

Joy in the Harvest Words Hona Amer

T

his year, I had an idea that I was going to grow organic cucumbers. It was one of those ideas that I couldn’t let go. Since they were going to grow in containers, I did research, purchased supplies, and planted the seeds as starter plants. I watched them every day, and when the first sprout of green appeared, there was hope. To my great delight, they grew. When it was time to transplant them, I enlisted the help of my sister in the project, and we gave them more soil, water and sunshine. It seemed like the perfect recipe for success. As I anticipated that they would now grow and flourish and produce big green cucumbers, they did the exact opposite. They slowly turned yellow, shriveled and died. My dream of big, green cucumbers started to shrivel as well. With resolve to try again, more seeds were planted. For a novice, growing vegetables is challenging. They require attention, lots of water, and just the right amount of sunshine. However, growing something is also inspiring. The miracle of many cucumbers coming from one little seed is phenomenal. The seed has to go into the ground, though, for it to turn into a plant. However, like my first attempt, sometimes it doesn’t always work like we anticipate. These principles can be applied to our lives as well. If we want to reap a harvest, we have to start planting. We might need to plant seeds of joy, friendship, love or generosity. We might need to start planting seeds that will help our dreams come to fruition in our lives. It might require us to make a phone call, read a business book, start a blog, or simply talk to our spouse about our dream. These seeds have the possibility of growing something beautiful in our lives. Yet, sometimes we want the results without the effort. We want to enjoy the benefit of fresh produce from a garden without having to water, weed and wait. We want the reality of our dreams and goals coming to fruition without any work, sacrifice or dedication. We would rather forgo the daily discipline of watering the seeds of our dream.

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | September 2014

We might be afraid that we will fail. Instead of planting seeds, it can be tempting to just sit and wait. Maybe you have experienced failure before and don’t know if you should start again. Yet, the reality is that we can’t reap tomorrow what we don’t plant today. So, I had to plant new seeds if there was to be any chance of harvesting a cucumber. After the new seeds were planted, the cucumber plants grew, but there were still no signs of any cucumbers. Then, one day, there was the smallest cucumber that I have ever seen that began to grow. The seeds planted months earlier were going to bring about a harvest. Now, every time I walk through the farmer’s market, I have a new appreciation for their effort. The vegetables look different, because my perspective has changed. It takes work to grow something. Farmers grow acres of produce, while I was just trying to grow some cucumbers. Yet, we both reaped a harvest from that which we planted. It also takes work to grow good things in our lives. We have to plant the seeds if we want to reap a harvest. But, just because it can be a challenge, it doesn’t mean that we should stop planting seeds. There is great satisfaction in harvesting. Don’t underestimate the small size of a seed; may the seeds you plant today bring a bountiful harvest into your life. Just start planting.
