So many factors play into relocating and no two moves are alike. Having the honor of working for others during this time, along with my own personal experiences, gives me the unique ability to look for concerns and address them before they cause a problem. Let's Go Dancing

JUST SHAKE IT OFF WITH SOME COUNTRY LINE DANCING.

ARTICLE BY FLORENCE DANIELS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KAEDEN PETERSON
Gregg Patterson, CEO of Desert Sun Entertainment

On a Monday evening at the Big Tin Cotton Gin, a hum of music drifts out into the parking lot. Upon entering, the warm light from the chandeliers is a welcome contrast to the dark cold outside. People are already dancing, many in sync, as though they've done this all their lives. The mood is light and there is a mix of ages on the dance floor, couples twirl alongside  single dancers with the same joy and laughter.

The idea for hosting a night of dancing in Queen Creek came to Gregg Patterson, CEO of Desert Sun Entertainment, last December. Their first event was held on June 17th and Gregg feared few people would come. In the end he needn't have worried when 430 people came and showed there was in fact high demand for dancing in town.  Gregg is a high school math teacher by day, and a DJ and dancer by night. 'Dancing saved my life.' he says. During a difficult time

in his life, a friend of his invited him out for a beer and also introduced him to dancing. He says he's been dancing ever since. The benefits include fitness, boosting confidence and mental health, community and connection. And while there are romantic sparks that can fly on the dance floor, the overall theme is family, with dancers as young as nine.

'You get to be who you are and just enjoy the music you love,' says Gregg. Here you are welcome whether you are a beginner or advanced, though dance lessons are also available at the event. This is a pressure free zone to just let loose, make new friends, and above all have some toe-tapping fun. Who knows, you may find some heart and healing on the dance floor too.

FROM the Heart

Ranch En Coeur brings farm to table straight to your heart.

ARTICLE BY FLORENCE DANIELS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JENNY KAUFMAN

Carla O’Neill is the owner of Ranch En Coeur, a homestead that started as an animal rescue.

Carla’s love for animals drives much of what she does on her 4 acre property that houses about 100 livestock, some fruit trees, and picturesque views of the surrounding San Tan Mountains. She and her family have lived and worked the land for ten years, and in that time she went from being a vegetarian to appreciating the wisdom of regenerative farming.

‘My body was failing me.’ she says of her former plant-based diet. She then began researching the health benefits of eating meat and began a new diet as well as a new perspective. Carla found that her sleep, energy, and digestion all improved. Despite eating meat, Carla’s love of animals and respect for life is no less fervent, if anything she says it was enhanced. Carla’s mission is to connect people with their food and where it comes from.

Her main program is called ‘Know It’, in which people actually adopt the animal they will eventually harvest. They help care for it, spend time with the animal, and understand what it actually takes to raise livestock and appreciate the effort, time, and investment. Plus, every part of the harvested animal has a purpose, nothing is wasted. This is a far cry from picking up a packet of cellophane wrapped meat from the grocery store, and that is the point.

Carla’s cows have names like Dolly, Dixie, and Delilah. She makes the extra effort to walk among them, connect, and yes, develop a relationship with the animals. It is why her ranch is called ‘En Coeur’, french for ‘from the heart’. The animals are not crammed in together, instead they are kept healthy and happy before they

are dispatched humanely. Carla says she prays on it whenever she recognizes an animal’s time has come. ‘We are stewards of Creation.’ she says.

As a result the animals she cares for live in a natural environment, with room to roam, their food is diverse and of the best quality, ensuring a life of dignity and care. Therefore, the meat of the animal that ends up feeding you is of superior quality and taste. Whereas the ground beef that you buy from the store can actually have up to 50 different animals from other parts of the world, which also brings up the issue of sourcing as well. The supply chain issues of recent years means that food security and sovereignty can only truly be had through your local farmer.

Ranch En Coeur’s farm box includes their meat, eggs, tallow, and lard as well as sourdough bread and veggies from local bakers and nearby farms. Carla also hosts farm to table gatherings twice per month, with a special event in February just for Valentine’s day in which you can enjoy a five course meal prepared on site by a chef from the Culinary Institute of America trained in fine french dining. This romantic dinner includes a tour of the farm before sitting down to a beautifully prepared meal surrounded by natural desert.

In the end, anything done with love is sure to produce the best results. Carla’s passion for the animals that sustain her is ultimately healthy for both body and heart.

BONDED IN Business

THE QC COUPLE BUILDING A LOCAL BUSINESS NETWORK.

In the heart of Queen Creek, a group of local professionals get together every other Wednesday. These meetups are meant for relationship building and learning from each other. Queen Creek Professionals was started by Zach and Adriana Thomas in January of 2023.

“Starting Queen Creek Professionals has been a transformative journey for both of us. It’s helped us identify and lean into our unique strengths while learning to value each other’s expertise. This journey has taught us the importance of knowing when to seek help, when to trust one another’s judgment, and when to collaborate to find the best solutions,” they said.

Zach owns several businesses, and he initially thought this would be a straightforward venture. He quickly realized that working with small businesses to network and build meaningful connections requires a deeper understanding of power partnerships, motivation, and mutual support. Adriana has been instrumental in teaching him patience and reminding him to trust the process. Her perspective has encouraged him to

“This journey has taught us the importance of knowing when to seek help, when to trust one another’s judgment, and when to collaborate to find the best solutions,”

stay grounded and resilient, which has benefitted both their work dynamic and their personal bond.

“Together, this journey has not only strengthened our skills and professional growth but also deepened our mutual respect and understanding. It’s been about giving each other grace, supporting one another, and celebrating every milestone, big or small,” Zach stated.

One of the biggest hurdles they’ve faced since starting Queen Creek Professionals is that it has required far more effort and structure than they initially anticipated. In the beginning, they took a relaxed approach to managing the group, hoping it would evolve organically. As the group grew, it became clear to them that they needed to establish clear guidelines and boundaries to maintain order and consistency. This shift came through a lot of trial and error, which wasn’t always easy, but it taught Zach and Adriana the importance of setting expectations early on.

Another challenge has been navigating the dynamics within the group, especially when differences of opinion arise. As much as they value open communication, mediating and maintaining peace among members has been a delicate balancing act. It’s taught them the importance of fostering a respectful, inclusive environment. It didn’t take them long to realize that managing QCP effectively was more than a two-person job. The scale of the work required—whether it’s organizing events or simply keeping the group running smoothly— was beyond what Zach and Adriana could handle alone. Thankfully, they had several individuals step up and form a ‘Leadership Team’ to share the responsibilities. Their willingness to support the group has been a game-changer and has allowed QCP to grow into what it is today.

They both agree that their biggest win since starting Queen Creek Professionals has been the ability to not only work well together but also maintain a strong and supportive partnership in parenting. It’s a unique blessing to work side by side with your spouse, and they genuinely enjoy the time they spend building something meaningful together.

Another positive has been the opportunity to create lifelong friendships within their community. It’s amazing to connect with like-minded individuals who share similar goals and values, and to build relationships rooted in mutual support. The friendships they’ve developed through QCP go beyond business—they’ve become a vital part of Zach and Adriana’s lives, creating a true sense of community and belonging.

“This journey has brought us closer as a couple and introduced us to a network of people who inspire and uplift us every day. It’s not just about achieving professional success; it’s about cherishing the journey, the connections we’ve made, and the time we share, both at work and at home.”

THE ROMANCE OF DEVON

The west coast of England has an undeniable charm.

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY FLORENCE DANIELS

When traveling abroad, capital cities tend to draw the most visitors. London has Big Ben and Buckingham Palace, but it also has crowds and the bustle and traffic of a big city. To get a sense of English culture outside of London, the county of Devon has the history, the coastline, and some of the best scones with clotted cream for tea.

Plymouth is a port city that is perhaps most famous with Americans for being the location from which the pilgrims boarded the Mayflower for the New World. The city has many charming cobblestone streets and historic markers to retrace their steps.

From there you can visit Mount Edgcumbe House and Gardens in nearby Cornwall. A place of lush grounds filled with flowers and the historic home of the Edgcumbe family for 600 years. Another town worth a visit is Dartmouth which is filled with Tudor architecture, plenty of restaurants and a variety of shops overlooking the estuary of the River Dart.

The coastline of Devon is not to be missed, with many sandy beaches and don’t forget the vanilla ice cream with a chocolate flake called a ‘99’. Salcombe is an idyllic resort town perfect for a stroll through its center.  You have your choice of restaurants with a view of the water as you enjoy your fish and chips.

Devon’s natural beauty is on full display at Dartmoor National Park, rich in wildlife, history, and varied terrain . Or visit Torquay, another seaside town and home of the famous mystery writer Agatha Christie. The attractions of Devon are countless and include something for the nature lover, the foodie, or the amateur historian. This family friendly county has plenty for the kids to enjoy too. Wherever you go in Devon, you will be sure to fall in love.

THE SCOTTSDALE LURE OF

The endless skies of blue are interrupted only by cacti rising majestically from the ground, arms reaching skyward, and palm trees, which are often adorned by lights that twinkle when the sun sets. There are vistas of open desert, rising mountains, and even the lush green of the locale’s many golf courses. And, of course, there are the vibrant shopping, dining, art, and event scenes, too.

Scottsdale is a city located in Metro Phoenix in Arizona, which as a whole is nicknamed “The Valley of the Sun” for its more than 330 days of sun each year—one of the reasons the area is a draw for visitors. With few rainy days, it’s easy to plan your daily activities without worry. Yes, though, the summer gets hot. But the rest of the year? Perfection.

Scottsdale is a mix of a resort destination, city, and suburbs, with more open desert the further north you venture. To the south is Downtown Scottsdale—also known as Old Town Scottsdale—which is a mix of old Southwestern charm

(including the legendary cowboy saloon, Rusty Spur Saloon); modern eateries from famed chefs; lots of shopping at small boutiques and specialty shops; the Arts District , which is filled with art galleries; and even tasting rooms from Arizona wineries located along the famed Scottsdale Wine Trail

Nearby is Scottsdale Fashion Square , one of the nation’s premier shopping destinations. While you’ll find many usual retailers there, there are also more than 40 luxury brands, including Christian Louboutin, Bottega Veneta, and Louis Vuitton.

Heading north are open-air shopping destinations Scottsdale Quarter and Kierland Commons , which sit across the street from each other. Take the afternoon or evening to stroll through, exploring the shops, restaurants, and activity destinations such as the indoor mini-golf destination Puttshack . What else is there to see and do? Plenty.

FROM RELAXATION TO SHOPPING TO GOLF TO SIGHTSEEING, THIS DESTINATION HAS IT ALL

PLAY

Like golf? There are more than 200 golf courses in the Scottsdale area. Whether you’re a pro or just starting out, there is a course for you. One of the most popular in the area is the TPC Scottsdale as it is the locale of the WM Phoenix Open, the most-attended golf tournament in the world.

For most of the year, Scottsdale boasts warm temperatures, making spending a day splashing in a pool a perfect choice. Many local resorts have pool areas that feature fun extras such as water slides, lazy rivers, and even a cooled sand beach. And even if you’re not an on-site guest, you can often purchase a day pass to be on-site through ResortPass.com.

Of course, there’s also plenty of outdoor recreation in Scottsdale. Pinnacle Peak in North Scottsdale is a popular mountain to hike (as is the iconic Camelback Mountain, which is located in nearby Phoenix), and the Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt is a park and trail system spread over 11 miles. Kids love McCormickStillman Railroad Park , which boasts a small-scale train that circles the park and plenty of play areas.

A destination filled with numerous attractions is A rizona Boardwalk , a center that includes Butterfly Wonderland , OdySea Aquarium , Ripley’s Believe It or Not! , Museum of Illusions , and more.

CULTURE

The beauty of Scottsdale’s Sonoran Desert led famed architect, Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), to build Taliesin West , his winter home and desert laboratory, in a mountainside in East Scottsdale. Today, there are daily tours of the UNESCO World Heritage site, and events are offered often.

However, Wright’s architecture isn’t the only art in the area. Beyond the Arts District in Downtown Scottsdale, there is public art all around the city, from sculptures to murals, so definitely keep your eyes open!

There are also museums such as Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West , a Smithsonian Affiliate, which showcases items from the Greater Western region, and the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art , affectionately known as SMoCA.

On Thursday evenings, there’s a free public ArtWalk in the Arts District, where galleries stay open later. Wander the streets and galleries, often against a backdrop of live music and even artist appearances.

NEARBY

While there’s so much to do, see, and experience in Scottsdale proper, there’s also much to see nearby. Make sure to experience the Musical Instrument Museum (affectionately known as the MIM), which is the world’s only global instrument museum. Desert Botanical Garden features an array of desert plants, and Phoenix Art Museum has an impressive collection of art. And, of course, the Phoenix Zoo is a perfect place for both kids and adults alike.
