Sharing and Connecting

As the year draws to a close and the holiday season is upon us, I find myself reflecting on the journey this year has been. At the end of last year, my coach and I decided that my word for 2024 would be "share." It seemed simple at the time. Little did I know how profoundly that word would impact my life and work. I could never have imagined the opportunities, challenges, and growth that would follow.

This year has been one of transformation. I completed my PhD, relaunched my memoir, recorded a docuseries, wrote a second book, and started a new podcast that uplifts, inspires, and empowers people to step out of their fear and comfort zones and into their power and greatness. Through sharing my journey and the journeys of others, I’ve seen firsthand how powerful storytelling can be in helping us to connect, grow, and heal.

This magazine has been no exception to that. Taking Red Rock City Lifestyle to new heights has been a fulfilling and exciting challenge. I've had the privilege of working with incredible local businesses, community leaders, and nonprofit organizations to create a platform that reflects the very best of what our community has to offer. Each edition has been a labor of love, and I’m so grateful for the trust you, our readers, have placed in us to bring meaningful stories and experiences to life.

On a personal level, this year has also marked the start of a new chapter for me as I celebrated my 50th birthday. I’ve embraced the changes, both personally and professionally, with an open heart, and it has been a year filled with gratitude, learning, and new beginnings.

As I look back on this year, my heart is full of appreciation for the people who have made it all possible. To my family, my friends, my business partners, and this incredible community—thank you. And to you, our readers, who continue to engage with and support this magazine, I am especially grateful. Your trust and belief in what we do inspires me every day to keep connecting, creating, and sharing.

The holiday season is a time for reflection, giving, and celebrating the joys that life brings. My hope is that this year has been everything you wished for and more.

From the bottom of my heart to yours—wishing you a holiday season filled with love, joy, and the warmth of those you cherish.

12 Days OF KINDNESS

THE POWER OF SMALL ACTS

In a world more disconnected than ever, kindness changes everything.

In the Jewish tradition - it is known as Tzedakah. From an early age, my parents taught me that contribution is key. It's not about grand gestures, but about showing up for others in small, consistent ways. I've brought this philosophy to my own kids; the world can be changed for the better—one act at a time. When we contribute, we not only help others but also discover the best parts of ourselves.

“In a world more disconnected than ever, kindness changes everything... It's not about grand gestures, but about showing up for others in small, consistent ways... The world can be changed for the better— one act at a time.”

I am a take action person. What value I give now is in giving others actionable steps to shift mindset and make a difference. We are all so busy, it is easy to get overwhelmed.

Here's something we can all try right now: I challenge you to 12 Days of Kindness.

Once you start committing to this process, your practice of kindness becomes a natural part of your day.

1. Give a Sincere Compliment

Compliments can brighten someone’s day. You never know how your words might inspire them to pass that kindness on to others.

2. Leave a Positive Review for a Small Business

Small businesses are the heart of our communities. A positive review takes just minutes, but can make a big difference in boosting their visibility and helping them thrive.

3. Donate Books to a Library or School

Books open doors to new worlds and ideas. Donating them gives others the chance to learn and grow while helping you declutter.

4. Buy Groceries for a Neighbor or the Elderly

Offering to buy groceries or help with a task is a simple way to make someone’s life easier, especially for those who may need extra support.

5. Send a Thank You Note to a Local Service Worker

Our service workers keep everything running smoothly. A handwritten note is a powerful reminder that their hard work is appreciated.

6. Donate Unneeded Items

Look around your home for clothes, books, or household items you no longer use. Donating them gives them new life and helps others in need.

7. Jackpotting a Waiter or Waitress

Give your server a 100 percent tip with a kind note. This gesture of generosity can completely brighten their day.

8. Leave Encouraging Notes in Random Places

Leave notes on a bathroom mirror, a park bench, or inside a book to spread joy.

9. Donate Toys or Food to an Animal Shelter

Help shelters care for animals in need. Whether it’s toys or food, every little bit makes a difference in their well-being.

10. Share Your Knowledge

Offer to help someone by sharing a skill or knowledge. Whether mentoring at work or teaching a new hobby, you can make a lasting impact.

11.

Be Kind to Yourself

You can’t pour from an empty cup. Give yourself grace and remember that being kind to yourself allows you to be kinder to others.

12. Encourage a Stranger

Sometimes, a simple “You’re doing great” can make a huge difference in someone’s day.

The

Ripple

Effect of Kindness

You never know the long-term impact of your kindness. The hug you give, the compliment you share, or the time you spend could change someone’s trajectory. One small act can create quite a ripple. You will see these small acts make a difference. When you change, the world around you changes too. Start with 12 days and watch as kindness transforms your life and the lives of others. The world needs your kindness.

Holiday Happenings

Festive fun throughout the Las Vegas Valley

The weather outside might not be frightful, but that doesn’t mean the holiday season isn’t in full swing throughout Southern Nevada.

The Las Vegas Valley has truly been giving The Big Apple a run for its money in recent years as the merriest place to be outside of the North Pole during the holiday season. It doesn’t matter if you’re in Summerlin, Henderson, or South Vegas, or visiting the Strip, holiday cheer can be found around every corner thanks to several seasonal events and attractions that are sure to get even the biggest grinch in the holiday spirit.

Looking for holiday lights? Southern Nevada has plenty of them, including 80,000 square feet of breathtaking light sculptures at Enchant Christmas and more than 1 million lights at World of Illumination. Still need to check off some names on your holiday gift-giving list? Holiday shoppers can support local artisans at several seasonal events in town, including LV Craft Shows’ Nutcracker Night Market, which features a variety of vendors selling unique gifts and delicious treats. Since it’s always better to give than receive, revelers can even celebrate the holiday season while supporting a worthwhile cause at The Magical Forest at Opportunity Village, as proceeds from the annual fundraiser have benefitted those with disabilities in the valley since 1992.

“A Very Vegas Christmas” It doesn’t matter if you're in Summerlin, Henderson, or South Vegas, or visiting the Strip, holiday cheer can be found around every corner thanks to several seasonal events and attractions.

Enjoy beloved holiday tunes like “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” and “Christmas Time is Here” when the Las Vegas Philharmonic presents “A Very Vegas Christmas” at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts on December 7. The holiday concert will include performances from a variety of talented guest singers as well as a heartwarming cameo by 12 legendary Las Vegas showgirls.

The Nutcracker featuring the Artists of Nevada Ballet Theatre

Tivoli Village “The Nutcracker” Enchant Christmas

Celebrate the holiday season at Tivoli Village this December with complimentary horse-drawn carriage rides throughout the retail center Thursday through Saturday, December 5 through 21. For those visiting on December 5, 12, and 19, guests can also do some holiday shopping at LV Craft Shows’ Nutcracker Night Market. The free event features unique gifts for sale, plus live entertainment, and dazzling lights.

A cherished holiday tradition in Las Vegas since 1981, Nevada Ballet Theatre’s production of “The Nutcracker” dances into The Smith Center on select dates December 14 through 27. Audiences can join Clara and her prince as they travel to a land of toy soldiers, mischievous rodents, and visitors from faraway lands while listening to a full orchestra perform the score during select performances.

Enchant Christmas will continue to illuminate the Las Vegas Ballpark through December 29. Guests can step inside the original story “Reindeer Games” to search for bell-shaped light sculptures hidden throughout the World’s Largest Christmas Light Maze, shop for unique wares from local artisans, go ice skating, visit with Santa, and more during the event, which has been a Summerlin favorite since 2021.

www.enchantchristmas.com

Through December 29, families venture to the M Resort in Henderson to experience the world’s largest animated drivethru audio-visual experience: World of Illumination. The theme for this year’s milelong course is “Candy Rush,” featuring hundreds of light displays synched to holiday music—including a gingerbread village and sweets as far as the eye can see.

Make merry memories this holiday season while supporting Southern Nevadans with disabilities at The Magical Forest at Opportunity Village. Running select evenings through December 31, the fundraiser invites guests to stroll through a colorfully lit forest, play carnival games, take photos with Santa and enjoy a variety of other activities, including rides on the Forest Express Passenger Train.

Get into the holiday spirit by drinking some holiday spirits at the fifth annual Miracle on Spring Mountain. The immersive experience transforms The Sand Dollar Lounge on Spring Mountain Road into a Christmas-themed bar through December 31, with seasonal cocktails, nightly entertainment, pizza pop-ups with celebrated local chefs and kitschy décor that would put the Griswolds’ holiday decorations to shame.

Mystic Falls Park

A holiday staple since 1994, Sam’s Town’s Mystic Falls Park winter wonderland display will bring Christmas cheer to guests through January 1, 2025. The free attraction not only features wintry décor, including an 18-foot Christmas tree decorated with thousands of twinkling lights, but also a nine-minute laser light show set to holiday songs that runs hourly from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

www.samstownlv.com

Of course, Las Vegas wouldn’t be the Entertainment Capital of the World without some festive holiday productions, and The Smith Center for the Performing Arts is hosting several holiday shows this December. A few of Las Vegas’ biggest headliners are also getting into the holiday spirit, with special holiday shows like Barry Manilow’s “A Very Barry Christmas” at Westgate Las Vegas December 5 through 7 and 12 through 14, and Terry Fator’s “A Very Terry Christmas” running December 1 through 3, 5 through 7, 11 through 16 and 19 through 24 inside The STRAT.

With so many festive events and attractions to choose from, what the Las Vegas Valley lacks in snow it definitely makes up for in holiday cheer.

TRANSFORM YOUR HOLIDAY GATHERINGS WITH MOBILE PAINTING PARTIES

ARTICLE BY KATIE BOER
PHOTOGRAPHY BY DEENA PELTON

Who doesn’t love a holiday party?

The twinkling lights, Santa sightings, and quality time with friends and family can’t be beat! But admit it: some seasonal celebrations—especially work-related ones—can get a bit cringy. They’re not bad; they just all tend to be the same.

This season, they don’t have to be.

Deena Pelton, owner and self-titled “entertainer” of Brushing It Up, is all about painting a new picture for your holiday festivities. Her mobile painting parties are gaining popularity for a

reason: they create a relaxed atmosphere that encourages socializing without the awkward small talk.

“It’s a good activity to bring people together without putting too much pressure on the socializing aspect,” Deena says. Instead of the usual water-cooler chatter, her parties spark creativity and connection, perfect for family get-togethers or team-building events. “It takes the pressure off of people, especially shy, quiet people because there’s already something there to talk about.”

Which is, the art!

Even better? Deena brings the fun right to you. Forget about heading to a paintand-sip place, she likens to an expensive

bar with an activity. Instead, she supplies everything you need—tables, chairs, canvas, easels, and acrylic paint. Set-up and clean-up? She’s got that covered, too.

With a variety of holiday-themed canvases like snowmen and gingerbread, and non-seasonal favorites like palm trees or Golden Knights designs, there’s something for everyone. Guests can even paint wine glasses, ornaments, or wood signs by special request.

So, this holiday season, why not let your guests unleash their creativity? Brushing It Up can transform your party from drab to fab, creating memories that last long after the holidays or make the perfect gift to enjoy in the new year.

Savor the Season with a Festive Winter Menu

HAWTHORN GRILL’S DELIGHTFUL CULINARY EXPERIENCE

ARTICLE BY PAIGE CANDEE
PHOTOGRAPHY BY THERESE SAM, JW MARRIOTT LAS VEGAS RESORT & SPA

With the holiday season upon us, food enthusiasts have a new reason to celebrate. Hawthorn Grill, the signature restaurant at JW Marriott Las Vegas Resort & Spa, has unveiled an enticing winter menu that promises to captivate diners with its seasonal flavors and festive offerings.

The new menu, curated under the guidance of recently appointed Executive Chef Eric Lhuillier, showcases a delightful array of dishes that perfectly capture the essence of winter dining.

"Our winter menu at Hawthorn Grill is designed to be a journey, a chance for our guests to

experience the full range of flavors the season has to offer," stated Chef Eric Lhuillier. "From the first bite to the last, we aim to evoke the warmth, the comfort, and the magic that makes winter dining so special."

Diners can embark on their culinary journey with tantalizing starters such as the filet mignon tartare, served with butter lettuce and a Dijon mustard vinaigrette, or the delicious roasted bone marrow, perfectly accompanied by sweet and spicy honey shimeji mushrooms and grilled baguette. For seafood lovers, the chilled seafood tower presents an impressive selection of crab claws, jumbo shrimp, oysters, and chilled lobster.

The main course offerings are equally impressive, featuring a range of prime cuts and house dry-aged steaks. Highlights include the 24-ounce prime bone-in rib eye and the rack of lamb with spiced baby carrots and thyme jus. For those seeking an extraordinary dining experience, the big cuts section offers a 48-ounce porterhouse and a 42-ounce tomahawk steak.

Hawthorn Grill hasn't forgotten about nonmeat eaters, offering a portobello steak with arugula salad, sauce vierge, and crispy garlic as a vegan option. Those who prefer a lite seafood fare can indulge in the dover sole, elegantly deboned tableside, or the 14-ounce lobster tail from cold Canadian waters.

To complement the main dishes, diners can choose from a selection of sides, including the creamy, buttery Potato Mousseline and the classic Creamed Spinach. For those looking to elevate their steak experience, additions such as Oscar Style, Bone Marrow Brulee, and Red Chimichurri Sauce are available.

The dining experience at Hawthorn Grill extends beyond the food. The restaurant boasts a richly appointed bar area, perfect for pre-dinner drinks or after-work gatherings. The spacious dining room offers both private dining areas for large family gatherings and intimate booths for romantic dinners. For those who prefer dining al fresco, the expansive outdoor patio, complete with a waterfall and lush foliage, provides a serene setting.

To round off the meal, guests can indulge in specially crafted after-dinner cocktails. A must-try is the Sweet Caroline, which blends Absolut pear with St. Germaine and spiced sugar syrup. Or opt for the S'more Please, featuring RD1 bourbon and vanilla syrup, a perfect sweet ending to the meal.

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”

As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.

Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.

One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.

Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.

These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just

about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”

We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.

To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.

The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.com

DIY Gift Wrapping That Stands Out During The Season

ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON

‘TIS

‘Tis the season to get crafty, clever or characterized! Well-wrapped holiday packages create immediate enthusiasm and somehow seem to make gifts more meaningful. Whether going for shiny, vintage, colorful, rustic, playful or eco-friendly impressions, the following are some Do-ItYourself gift-wrapping ideas to make the wrapping process even more satisfying. Simply applying jute twine to gifts provides a ‘less is more’ vibe.

ADD NATURAL TOUCHES TO CRAFT PAPER:

For gifts with a rustic, organic feel, use seasonal accents, such as sprigs, pine cones and cinnamon sticks, tied up with twine, encircling recycled paper for the wrapping.

FIRST INITIAL DECORATION:

In lieu of a gift tag, attach an oversized paper mâché letter of the recipient’s first initial to the top of the box. The letter then can serve as customized décor, too.

POLKA DOTS:

Wrap gifts in plain craft paper and then cut out big, multicolored polka dots to glue down. It’s hard not to smile at big, bright dots.

CARDBOARD BOX SNOWPERSON:

Wrap three or four boxes in white paper, with different gifts inside, and then stack them. Tape the boxes together, tapering to the top. Glue buttons on the bottom ones, create a snowperson’s face on the top one, with carrot nose cut out of orange paper.

‘tis the SEASON

Attach a real hat, if desired. Tie wider, festive bow around the snowperson’s ‘neck.’

Add a real corncob pipe for a bonus finishing touch, if preferred.

MINI TREE GIFT WRAPPING:

Pine needles and small tips of real tree branches make quick and easy mini Christmas trees that can be glued onto Christmas gifts. They will smell nice, too.

BOOK PAGE WRAPPING PAPER:

Repurpose old book pages by cutting out shapes of dreidels, snowflakes, ornaments, candles or reindeer to paste on gifts.

DIY STAMP WRAPPING PAPER:

Wrap gifts in solid colors of paper. Secure ink stamps and an ink pad in a themed color(s), and stamp the paper as much or as little as desired.

UNBOXED:

Apply other types of containers, rather than boxes or bags, for gift wrapping; examples:  canisters, pillow cases, baskets, fabric scraps, maps, glass containers, towels, blankets, scarves, Bento bags (also called triangle bags or origami bags).

CONFECTION

Elevate your holiday hot chocolate with a charcuterie experience

As winter settles in and the air chills, there’s nothing more comforting than a steaming cup of hot chocolate. While a simple cup of hot cocoa can warm the soul, why not take it up a notch and indulge in a hot cocoa charcuterie board? Picture a delightful spread of various hot chocolate flavors, mix-ins, and toppings, inviting you to create a personalized, delicious mug of joy. Let’s explore the wonders of old-fashioned hot cocoa and all the accompaniments

you can use to create your very own hot cocoa charcuterie board.

THE DELIGHTS OF OLD-FASHIONED HOT COCOA

Old-fashioned hot cocoa transports us to simpler times and brings with it a sense of nostalgia. The slow, traditional process of making hot chocolate from scratch –with real chocolate, milk and a touch of sweetness – provides a distinctly memorable experience for the holidays.

OLD-FASHIONED HOT COCOA

Ingredients

• ¼ cup 60% cacao chocolate morsels

• ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa

• 1/3 cup white granulated sugar

• 2 cups milk

• 2 cups half and half

• 1 pinch salt

• ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Directions

Heat all ingredients (except vanilla extract) in a 2-quart saucepan over medium-low heat until almost boiling. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.

CREATING THE PERFECT HOT COCOA

CHARCUTERIE BOARD

Gone are the days of selecting only between marshmallows and whipped cream as toppings. With a hot cocoa charcuterie board, you can delve into a world of flavors, textures and spices that will make each sip an adventure, and serve as a sweet centerpiece to your holiday gatherings.

Begin by selecting a variety of flavors and mix-ins, such as mini marshmallows, salted caramels, white chocolate morsels and peppermints. Pair your hot cocoa with delectable treats like cookies, gum drops, crème-filled wafer rolls or chocolate-covered espresso beans. Consider adding biscotti, chocolate-dipped spoons or chocolate-coated pretzels as well as whipped toppings and an assortment of sprinkles.

VARIATIONS TO SAVOR

Indulge in some exciting recipes that are sure to elevate your hot chocolate into fun and festive beverages during the holidays and throughout the colder months.

MINTY FRESH WONDER

Embrace the festive season with a mint-infused hot cocoa. Fancify your beverage with a peppermint stick or make your

own crushed candy cane dust for a touch of holiday cheer. This minty delight is a crowd-pleaser and a perfect indulgence for cozy winter evenings.

SPICY AZTEC ELIXIR

Channel your inner adventurer with an Aztec-inspired hot cocoa. Infuse your drink with a touch of chili powder and a dash of cinnamon. Garnish with a cinnamon stick for a festive presentation. This fiery blend will ignite your senses and warm you from the inside out.

GROWN-UP GRASSHOPPER

Transform your drink into a rich adult-only grasshopper hot cocoa by adding 2 oz. of crème de menthe or a shot of peppermint schnapps. Adorn with a crushed candy cane rim for a playful offering.

DECADENT SALTED CARAMEL INDULGENCE

Elevate your hot cocoa experience with a drizzle of homemade salted caramel. The combination of slightly bitter cocoa and sweet, buttery caramel is a match made in heaven. Sprinkle an extra pinch of sea salt for that irresistible contrast.
