CARVING Your Way THROUGH Life

Las Vegas is all about taking chances and so is Sharon Gainsburg. Originally from Philadelphia, she moved from the east coast to Southern Nevada in 2006. Sharon was skeptical about whether she could make a living here, but she's done “that” and a lot more in two decades ... she's made a LIFE. Her daughter was living here and encouraged her to relocate, and that was her inspiration for moving to Las Vegas.

Sharon's courageous spirit is contagious, especially when it comes to her students. She's a stone sculptor who has been teaching classes for more than 40 years. She started with clay and graduated to stone and says stone carving is a skill anybody can master.

"My ideal student is someone willing to take chances," says Sharon. “No art background is needed. We work with the direct carving method. When you work with clay you can always put it back, but with stone you have to change the plan. Stone carving is like life, suddenly there's a detour. I've learned you have to be creative to find a better solution.”

CONTINUED >

How a local stone sculptor teaches students confidence and creativity one chisel at a time

She offers a free trial class, which means that potential students have nothing to lose. "Over the years I have found people everywhere have the same anxieties,” says Sharon. “They are afraid to look foolish. If you believe you can't do something and never try, you'll be right. Take chances, go forward; life can be short, in actuality we only have today."

Her students come from all walks of life, with the oldest being 81. Some take the stone carving classes and others take her three-month workshop called, "The Artist's Way," based on a book by Julia Cameron. This course is designed to help individuals discover and reclaim their creative selves. To participate, students read one chapter a week, journal every day, complete an artist date every week, and show up for meetings. The course covers topics such as self-criticism, perfectionism, abundance, faith, compassion, and building a sense of connection.

"Students read and underline what speaks to them,” says Sharon. “I ask them to make a commitment to do something once a week they have never done before. I give 100 different ideas."

Though her personal gallery is in Las Vegas, Sharon exhibits widely throughout the United States. Her work is found in numerous private collections, as well as corporate offices such as Nabisco, NJ Power & Light, USA Today, and more.

"My sculptures are a mirror for my internal explorations of my spiritual connections,” says Sharon. “Carving is the language I have been given with which I communicate from my heart the mystery and magic of life's journey."

CREATIVE IDEAS FOR UNFORGETTABLE KIDS' VALENTINE'S DAY PARTIES AT SCHOOL OR HOME

Sweet Celebrations ARTS & CRAFTS

Whether you're helping with your child's Valentine's Day party at school or planning one at home, there are so many fun, creative ways to keep kids busy and make their party a blast. Try some of these ideas that kids are sure to love.

CRAFTS

Heart suncatcher. Lay a sheet of wax paper in front of each child. Then have the kids cut red, pink, and white tissue paper into squares or other shapes. Next, lay a tissue square on the wax paper and brush it with liquid starch. Continue by overlapping the pieces of tissue to create an 8" x 8" collage. When the collage is dry, carefully peel the tissue away from the wax paper. Cut the collage into a big heart. Then put a single hole punch in the heart, and thread a piece of yarn or ribbon through it to hang it.

Heart structures. Provide each child with a supply of gummy hearts and toothpicks, and let their creativity take over. They can build a house, sphere, rocket, airplane, or whatever their imagination desires. Finger paint Valentine. Fold a piece of paper in half and cut out a large heart. Next, place the paper with the big heart-shaped hole on top of another piece of paper. Dip a thumb or finger into the paint and make a finger impression within the heartshaped area. Alternate colors and fingers until the whole area is full of colorful fingerprints. When done, remove the top sheet, and you'll have a colorful heart image underneath.

Valentine candle holder. Give each child a glass jar. Have them start by cutting red, white, and pink tissue paper into small hearts or other shapes. Using a mixture of one part flour to two parts water and a paintbrush, paste the tissue shapes onto the jar overlapping each other until the jar is completely covered.

ARTS & CRAFTS

ACTIVITIES

GAMES

Musical hearts. This game is played like musical chairs. Cut out enough hearts for the number of players. On each heart, write an action such as “rub your belly,” “dance,” and “pretend you're an elephant.” When the music stops, everyone must act out the heart they landed on.

Pin the heart on the Tin Man. Draw the Tin Man on a large sheet of poster board, then cut it out. Have each kid cut out a heart from construction paper. Then blindfold and spin each child around and have them try to place the heart on the Tin Man's chest.

Candy heart bingo. Buy a Valentine's Day bingo game available through many online retailers. Then use candy hearts for the markers. Valentine's Day word find. Have each kid write 'Valentine's Day Cupid' on a sheet of paper. Then have them write down as many words as they can make from it. Offer prizes for the most words, longest word, and the most rhyming words.

What would Valentine's Day be without a special Valentine's story or two? Read aloud to younger kids. If they're readers, have each kid take a turn reading a page.

PRODUCING CREATIVE Breakthroughs

How Freed Artists supports local creatives with collaboration and mindfulness

Freed Artists Co-Founders Brandy Leviner and David Mayorga experiment in-studio
Freed Artists co-founders Michelle St.Angelo and David Mayorga collaborate with local dancer Madison Pitcher on a project

One brisk day in early 2020, four independent creatives walked through a warehouse in downtown Las Vegas, envisioning a co-working space designed for performers, photographers, writers, makers, and working artists of all kinds. After months of planning and fundraising, a global pandemic stopped the dream in its tracks.

But, somehow, the Freed Artists (FreedArtists. com) concept managed to stay alive.

“We need art now more than ever,” says Co-founder Jennevive Barros. “But as artists ourselves, we understand the unique challenges of creating, and we vowed to help.”

A collective of working creatives — from performing and visual artists, to writers and body workers — Freed Artists provides tools and strategies for the unlocking of creative potential. Rooted in mindfulness techniques such as yoga, dance, sound therapy, breath work, coaching and practical skill building, members of FA benefit from the group’s collaborative approach.

“Creativity is collective, but it’s often done by individuals,” explains Barros. “The truth is that you need outside inspiration and accountability to make your idea come to life, even if it’s a solo act like a painting or a novel.”

Co-founders Jennevive Barros, Brandy Leviner, David Mayorga and Michelle St. Angelo have worked together for many years on various projects, each repeatedly helping the other’s visions come to life. Producing workshops, production shows, wellness brands, activations, and even a musical, they became a productive team and began to analyze why. Those lessons were built into the fabric of Freed Artists and are now used to help other creatives break through the typical roadblocks.

Because the creative industry, unlike most corporate entities, runs through a cyclical rather than linear project timeline, artists often feel unproductive, lazy or stuck. Freed Artists' events, discussions and tools are meant to help makers embrace the natural cycles and continue to the next phases of their work.

“Creating is a vulnerable act, prone to breakdowns,” says Barros. “But Freed Artists is here to fix that."

A PERFECT M ARRIAGE SOUP AND BREAD:

Hearty food nourishes the body during cold winter months

PHOTOGRAPHY
What if we chose connection — cooking seasonal meals and allowing ourselves to pause to truly enjoy our food? Maybe cheesy bread could be served without the side of guilt.

As we continue to embrace the cold weather, we may find ourselves craving heavier and grounding foods as we retreat into hibernation. This change in appetite reflects our body’s desire to align with the cycles of nature. Moving into the New Year, it can be common to place more discipline or restrictions on our eating habits. But what if instead of dieting, we nourished ourselves by choosing to support the ebb and flow of our body’s seasons? What if we chose connection — cooking seasonal meals and allowing ourselves to pause to truly enjoy our food? Maybe cheesy bread could be served without the side of guilt. This Italian wedding soup recipe is simple in its approach, but the result is a hearty and brothy dish. Chunky meats and vegetables add texture to the rich, savory broth making it the ideal meal to help you retreat from the cold temperatures. The Hasselback bread loaf is a straightforward, melty wonder and the perfect vessel for sopping up any leftover broth and goodies in your soup bowl. Together, the soup and cheesy bread make for a well-rounded meal to ground you this season, with a little indulgence.

HASSELBACK MOZZARELLA BREAD LOAF

INGREDIENTS

• 1 Italian bread loaf

• 1 cup butter

• 4-5 garlic cloves, minced

• 1 tsp kosher salt

• 2 tsp dried oregano

• 8 oz. bag of shredded mozzarella cheese

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 350 F.

2. Cut foil that is 3 times the length of the bread loaf and lay flat on countertop.

3. Place bread loaf parallel to the length of the foil.

4. With a serrated knife, cut bread in ¾ in. slices, making sure not to cut all the way through.

5. Melt butter in a bowl. Add garlic and seasonings. Stir to incorporate.

6. With a pastry brush, coat the slices of bread with butter mixture. Be generous with your butter! If you have leftover butter, pour the rest over the entire loaf.

7. Grab handfuls of mozzarella cheese and stuff in between each slice.

8. Cover the bread loaf with foil and place in oven. Bake for 20 minutes, uncovering the foil for the last 5 minutes until the top of the bread is golden brown.

ITALIAN WEDDING SOUP RECIPE

4 Servings

INGREDIENTS

• 1 lb. fresh or frozen pre-made meatballs

• ½ cup carrots, diced small

• ½ cup celery, diced small

• 1 cup onions, diced small

• 3 garlic cloves, minced

• 1 bay leaf

• 2 tbsp butter

• 2 tbsp cooking oil

• 48 oz low sodium chicken broth

• ½ cup orzo pasta (or any small, short noodle)

• 1 tbsp kosher salt

• 1 tsp fresh ground black pepper

• 1 tbsp fresh oregano, chopped roughly

• 1 tbsp fresh flat-leaf parsley

DIRECTIONS

1. Whether freshly baked or cooked from frozen, prepare your meatballs and set aside. Meatballs can be prepared ahead of time and kept in the fridge.

2. Bring a medium-sized pot to medium heat. Add oil and butter.

3. Add vegetables to the pot and sweat until onions are translucent (about 5 minutes). Stir occasionally.

4. Add the bay leaf, chicken broth, salt, and pepper to vegetables. Turn heat to medium-high.

5. Bring broth mixture to a rolling boil for five minutes. With tongs, add meatballs to the boiling broth.

6. Add orzo to the broth, stirring continuously to make sure the pasta doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan.

7. Continue to cook the pasta for 6-7 minutes. Taste test to make sure pasta is al dente.

8. Throw the fresh herbs into the soup and add salt and pepper to taste.

9. Serve immediately.
