The Best Gifts
Wow, are you kidding me? Are we really about to kick off the holidays and put another year in the books? This month, I want to touch on a topic that many of us care deeply about and that is our local non-profit landscape. I’ve debated writing about this for a while, not because I don’t care about the organizations but because I am, by nature, a private person. Someone who prefers to give and operate anonymously but now, I’m going to show my hand. In March, I was at a fundraiser for Step2 and met their CEO, Mari Hutchinson. Mari told a great story about the work they were doing, the women they were helping, and the amazing outcomes they were achieving. As the conversation progressed, I could tell the moment had come to pull out my checkbook but the more we spoke, the more it dawned on me that as a local media owner, I could do much more for them by simply writing a check and that by amplifying their brand and their cause, we could potentially turn one check into many. She loved the idea. We provided Mari and Step2 a blank canvas, full-page ad in our May issue and have continued that every month since, working with new non-profits of all scope and focus to help them build awareness and spread their messages. Yes, it’s expensive for us but in my mind, if we have a stated mission of being a community-first publication, then we need to put our money where our mouth is. Plus, it feels really good.
So why did I, as the private person that I claim to be, decide to share this now? Because December is our giving issue and I want to do my part in continuing to help these amazing organizations build awareness and hopefully become recipients of the overwhelming amount of generosity that our community is known for delivering.
Thank you all for an amazing year. Happy holidays!

the night before Christmas
nd all throughout Reno, Not a creature was stirring, not even in the casino.
The home was staged with stylish care, In hopes that a buyer would soon be there.
The family rested well, all snug in their beds, As thoughts of full-price offers danced in their heads.
‘But what of this market?’ their minds swirled, All that could go wrong had their toes curled.
The very next morning they made a smart call, “We need the David Morris Group, they never drop the ball.”
Now with the right team to guide them along, Their faith in a great outcome was really quite strong.
With a caring word and unparalleled expertise, Their transaction was smooth, not a single crease.
When all was said and done, it was smiles all around, Cheers, celebrations, and true connections abound.

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”
As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.
Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.
One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.
Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.
These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just
about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”
We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.
To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.
The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.com

A HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS
Building a family isn't one-size fits all
ARTICLE BY NORA HESTON TARTE

Kent and Alyssa Van Horn always knew that they wanted to adopt, and they wanted to start the process before they pursued having biological children.
Despite careful and determined planning, the Van Horns quickly learned that life doesn’t always unfold as you expected and so their plans for adoption shifted to becoming foster parents.
“We have the desire and the capacity to care for a child and it seemed like there was a need in the foster care system,” Kent says.
With the help of several agencies and support from within The Washoe County Human Services Agency (HSA), the Van Horns fostered their first child, an infant, for six months beginning in February 2022. Despite falling in love, the couple ultimately fought to get the little girl reunited with her biological family.
“Adoption is always inclusive of loss,” Alyssa laments. “I think there’s always… grief along the joy.”
The second foster situation the Van Horns entered into had a lot of similarities to the first. Elijah was nearly a year old when he was placed with the couple (who live in Incline Village) in May of 2022. The goal was again reunification with his biological family as parental rights were still in place and Elijah—who they call Eli—wasn’t technically available for adoption.
While living with the Van Horns, however, that changed, and the couple did officially adopt Elijah. It’s easy to say, they had fallen in love again.
Alyssa and Kent say the courtroom was filled with people on Eli’s official adoption day. There were friends, family members, members from Eli’s biological family, and several social workers. “It was truly a celebration,” Kent says.
At the same time, sadness was present in the room, too. Members of Eli’s family were there to both celebrate his new family and grieve the changing of their own. Alyssa recalls Eli’s biological aunt and grandmother—two of the family members still involved in Eli’s life through monthly visits—crying in the courtroom, tears she believes were indicative of both sadness and joy. “This was a loss to their family also,” she says. “We made it as good as we could and it is not perfect.”
After welcoming Eli, Alyssa gave birth to a biological son in December of 2022 and a third son in June of 2024. Eli, the parents agree, is a wonderful big brother.
“Eli is super fun,” Alyssa says. “He’s really curious, he’s a whirlwind of activity. He loves to explore. He’s becoming a great skier and learning to swim and he’s really kind and empathetic with

other children.” Kent chimes in. “He loves to perform. He’s a very funny kid and knows he’s funny and loves to make people laugh… he is just so cute and likeable; everybody’s day is improved by interacting with Eli.”
Holiday traditions are a big perk of having a family with young kids. For the Van Horns, those traditions include cutting down Christmas trees in the forest every December and eating pancakes in matching pajamas on Christmas Day. Eli has a mini hatchet he carries with him—safely and supervised—on their tree-chopping excursions.
“We are not perfect parents,” Kent says. “We have real bad days with each of our kids…. It’s not that we have this figured out and we are perfect, it’s that we believe we have the desire to raise a family in this way and we’re figuring it out as we go.”
“It’s hard to start,” Alyssa says honestly of the process. Her best advice is to just keep saying yes. Say yes to the initial meeting, say yes to the application… just keep saying yes until you are compelled to say no. Getting information
doesn’t handcuff you to any decision. There are many scenarios and you can wait for the one that makes the most sense for your family.
While the Van Horns currently have three children under the age of four, they haven’t ruled out adding more adoptive, foster, or biological children to their brood. “We don’t have the sense that our family is complete,” Alyssa says. “But we’re open to that as well.”
If you’re interested in building your family with adoption or foster in mind, those within (or near) Washoe County can begin by contacting HSA (which includes senior, adult, and children's services). Have a Heart is the specific branch within the children’s division that handles recruitment and training of potential foster and adoptive applicants.
If you are approved, Have a Heart holds your hand throughout the process and even offers a mentor program for potential adoptive and foster parents.
“A common misconception by which potential applicants rule themselves out is ‘in order to foster or adopt you must be a married couple living in a house’ which is inaccurate,” says Mitch Matthews, family manager with the Washoe County Children’s Division and someone who worked with the Van Horns on Elijah’s placement. “We have many diverse families… we do not discriminate. The diversity of our foster community is unique and beautiful as are the children for whom we care.”

COLIN & MARY BETH SMITH ARE BUILDING AN EMPIRE, AND A VILLAGE
OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS
Colin and Mary Beth Smith, By Chris Holloman
Who knew an empire smelled like freshly baked bread?
The reality is, the Smith Family food and restaurant empire is built upon decades of, not only hard work in the catering and restaurant spaces, but also through a corporate career and
NOT ALL BUSINESS… REALLY GOOD FOOD, TOO
While MaryBeth’s head is in the books, her husband Colin, along with the other chefs in the kitchens they run, are all about the food. Smith & River, one of their newest ventures, offers space for

business mindset. “While they love food - I really look at it as a business, not just a restaurant and that has made all the difference,” says MaryBeth Smith, who owns the Roundabout empire with her husband, Chef Colin Smith. She even mentions pulling on her vibrant corporate career to keep the businesses going year-after-year. While she holds the title of Chief Commercial Officer at NeoLight, LLC, she also helps spearhead the many businesses under their umbrella… Franco Bread, Roundabout Catering & Party Rentals, Roundabout Cafe inside Nevada Museum of Art, Roundabout inside Reno Ice, Smith & River, and Tannenbaum Events Center—to name a few. And how does she juggle it all? It’s natural, she says… certainly not always easy, but innate nonetheless. “I’ve always been extremely organized and my dad had us balancing things to the penny growing up,” Smith says.
fine American cuisine, right along the Truckee River. Here you can try a crisp Boston Pear Salad, Orchiette Pasta slathered in pork belly and butternut squash, or even the infamous MaryBeth Pizza with tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, basil, teardrop tomatoes, and Italian sausage. “My favorite dish we make right now has to be the Cacio e Pepe—it’s simple yet incredibly flavorful,” mentions Beth McBride, finance and general manager of Roundabout Catering Group and Franco Bread and daughter of MaryBeth and Colin Smith. “Especially with our new table-side service at Smith and River. Watching it come together right in front of you adds an extra element of excitement to an already delicious dish. It's a perfect blend of taste and experience!”

but also their talents to create a family of food-centric businesses in the Reno area. And while a deep-rooted business mindset is what has allowed the family to expand over the years (Roundabout Bistro first opened in 2007 and the name and brand has certainly evolved), MaryBeth says perseverance and hiring the right people has allowed them to thrive.
“In working with family, there’s a shared commitment to success that feels deeper because we’re all personally invested in each other’s well-being,” McBride says. Throughout the pandemic, because they had diversified their businesses so vastly, and were able to partner with Renown Health to provide frontline workers meals, they did not have to lay anyone off from their various teams. MaryBeth says she’s grateful, because there are several members of their direct family who work for their business, but also talented people who have been with them for long enough to call them family. Take Ricky Torres, for example. He has been with the Smith’s for over 17 years, and even more impressive considering he was 18 when he started as a dishwasher and is now dawning a chef’s hat. “You can’t have one without the other - talent and experience,” says Smith on this industry. “We have great people mixed in with family members and really we hold everyone to the same standard.”

AN EYE TOWARD THE FUTURE
Part of running a business is knowing what’s next. While much is on the burner— simmering and developing flavor—the Smiths aren’t quite ready to reveal just what’s cooking yet. One thing we know for sure? Family and philanthropy will always be involved. Chef Colin Smith will be the President of the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows beginning in January 2026. While giving back has always been a part of the Smith’s methodology and expansion, they have pivoted slightly from helping people previously incarcerated find work and get sure footing to the region’s children, food security, and providing Franco bread donations. “While I hope the business continues through future generations, I'm content knowing [my boys will] choose what’s right for them,” McBride says. “With my mom having five kids, I’m hopeful that a couple of the grandkids will want to be part of this legacy and help carry it forward.”
A Doggone Good Time
Did your pet make the nice list this year?

The days are cold, the nights are filled with twinkling lights, and your furry friend’s tail is wagging as we feel the magic of the holiday season taking over. From photos with Santa (and a few of his companions) to leaning into the season of giving, there are several ways to celebrate the holidays around town with your pets.
‘TIS THE SEASON OF GIVING
Lights of Love from the Nevada Humane Society offers both a way to donate to the rescue organization and a potential heart-warming gift idea for the animal lover in your life. During December people can recognize a current pet or one who has passed away by purchasing a $10 light that will honor the pet and be displayed within the adoption center. The lights are available for $10 each and a certificate acknowledging the pet is also provided.

organizations. Trees have information about furry friends who will spend the holidays in the loving care of the adoption centers of local rescues. Trees are provided by the Nevada Humane Society and by Pet Station at various locations. You can pick a tag from a tree to support a specific animal’s emotional, medical, or enrichment needs from $10 or more.
GIVING A GIFT OF UNCONDITIONAL LOVE
Rescue organizations have many pets looking for loving homes during the holidays. Making a lifelong decision to add a new furry family member is a big choice, but it can be very rewarding and add an element of unconditional love to your home.
The SPCA of Northern Nevada will be holding a feewaived adoption event on Dec. 14 at Lithia Reno Subaru.
The Nevada Humane Society, with two locations, one in Reno and one in Carson City, encourages people to give pets as gifts as long as it is done responsibly, thoughtfully, and recognized as a lifelong commitment. Their adoption counselors act as excellent matchmakers and can help guide folks through the process.
Other rescue organizations include Res-que, Canine Rehabilitation Center and Cat Sanctuary, Pawsibilities, and more. Each rescue would certainly appreciate your support.
ALL DRESSED UP WITH A FEW PLACES TO GO – HOLIDAY PET PHOTOS
It’s Santa!! (I KNOW HIM!) The SPCA of Northern Nevada’s Thrift Store, located on Moana Lane in Reno, offers pet pictures with Santa, free of charge, on Dec. 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The line usually isn’t long, and the volunteers are always cheery and bright. Be sure to walk around the aisles with your pets to see if you find a treasure or two. The digital photos are

free and any purchases you make support the rescue organization, so you’ll be helping to save lives.
You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch! Santa (& Grinch) Pet Photos with a twist, benefiting Res-que, a local nonprofit rescuing and rehabilitating abandoned and neglected animals, takes place on Dec. 14, from 12 to 4 p.m. at Natural Paws Pet Supply Store on Wedge Parkway in Reno. Your pet can have their photo taken with the green, mean Mr. Grinch or the man himself, Santa. A printed copy of the photo will be given to you on the spot. Plus, you can sip a delicious glass of wine while your pets get pampered and help the Grinch’s heart grow. A unique moment you’ll be sure to cherish for years to come, this event has a suggested donation of $10 per pet photo and $10 per wine tasting. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
Pet Station, with many locations throughout Reno, northern Nevada, northern California and Lake Tahoe, also offers pet photos with Santa (and potentially a few other guest stars like Mrs. Claus). Complimentary

pet treats and digital photos are available. The photo ops bounce between eleven of Pet Station’s locations throughout the month, including five locations in Reno. Check Pet Station’s website and social media to find specific hours of participation.
HONORABLE MENTIONS
A popular holiday tradition, The Nutcracker Ballet by the A.V.A. Ballet Theatre from the Nevada Arts Council, will again be performed at the Pioneer Center in downtown Reno. While pets are not welcome in the venue, you can enjoy a special fourlegged performer. A rescue dog from the SPCA of Northern Nevada will grace the stage during each performance, Dec. 20-22.
Going holiday shopping? Don’t leave your pooch at home. The Outlets at Legends Shopping Mall in Sparks is dog-friendly and most of the stores allow dogs inside so your best friend can be right by your side as you browse for that perfect gift.

Christmas on the Comstock
A VIRGINIA CITY TRADITION
ARTICLE BY NORA HESTON TARTE
The month of December is filled with cheery holiday fun and jolly events in Virginia City. As part of the month-long Christmas on the Comstock event, visitors will be transported not only back in time to the woodplanked sidewalks of the 1800s gold rush town, but also to a winter wonderland with holiday surprises around every corner.
“Our town changes overnight and becomes brightly decorated for the holidays,” says Todd Tuttle, director of tourism in Virginia City. C Street—the town’s main stretch—pulls out all of the bells and whistles, draped in decorations from corner to corner. “It's heartwarming to drive into town and see it all done up, but the backdrop is what makes it standout. Our buildings and town are historic, so they add the perfect old-time scenery that makes everything else feel more magical,” Tuttle explains.
The goal is always to maintain the integrity of Virginia City’s historic mining town feel, even during the holiday season. “I firmly believe this is the only place in the nation that combines holiday cheer with a historic Comstock mining town for an unforgettable seasonal experience.”
CAN’T MISS EVENTS
Many of Virginia City’s most beloved events are rooted in tradition. For decades, visitors and locals have been coming to the Comstock to watch the Parade
of Lights roll down Main Street (Dec. 7 and 14 at 5 p.m.) featuring brightly lit floats and other vehicles followed by a magical Christmas-themed fireworks show, or to ride the V&T Candy Cane Express, a whimsical 40-minute, round-trip journey that begins and ends at the Virginia City depot.
Another long-time favorite is the annual tree lighting ceremony, held at the corner of C and Union streets in the Bucket of Blood parking lot.
Other events offer a modern experience in a not-somodern setting. This year a drone show will join the merry line-up. “It's exciting that we'll have a firework show on the first Saturday of December and follow it up the next weekend with an entirely different display of lights,” Tuttle teases. “Visitors will be able to look up at the sky and see all sorts of colors and configurations among the stars where there may even be some special surprises.”
And if twinkling lights are your cup of hot cocoa, then consider a ride on the Train O' Lights with your family in tow, similar to the Candy Cane Express experience but with an illuminated twist.
That’s just the beginning of the jovial fun, however. Tuttle calls out The Piper's Opera House Christmas play as one of his favorite events of the season. “There are very few historic opera houses like Piper's where, to this day, you'll be able to sit in the same venue and watch the stage come to life like it did back in its heyday,” he says.

Our town changes overnight and becomes brightly decorated for the holidays.
“I firmly believe this is the only place in the nation that combines holiday cheer with a historic Comstock mining town."
SHOP TILL YOU DROP
“Merchants around town are especially holiday ready, as we tend to see that Virginia City is the place to purchase those truly unique and handmade western wares,” Tuttle says. So, aside from the kitschy shops that feature everything from homemade candy to nostalgic toys, tin signs, and original art, where can you complete your list for both those naughty and nice?
The St. Mary’s Art Center will hold its 10th annual Holiday Faire Dec. 7-8. More than 20 local and regional artists and makers gather to sell their own creations in a holiday market-style space filled with music and decorations. Similarly, the Senior Center Craft Fair (over the same weekend) will have its own collection of handmade and one-of-a-kind gifts.
Perhaps the best place to shop for Christmas collectibles, however, is the Forever Christmas store. Open year-round, Forever Christmas has been selling
a large variety of holiday-themed goodies and decorations for more than 30 years, making it one of the longest running retail spots in Virginia City.
Owners Loren and Sue Pursel originally bought the shop with plans to put something else in its place. Ultimately, they decided to keep the tradition original owners Billy and Murla Drake had created. “We remodeled the existing space several years ago to add about 25% more retail floor space,” Loren says. “This allowed us to put in new lines and a larger selection of merchandise, which has benefited us greatly in attracting shoppers year-round to the store. We are quite popular in winter, spring, summer, and fall as tourists are looking for that special [momento] to remind them of their visit to Virginia City.”
Santa Claus and his elves are both common fixtures in Forever Christmas during the holiday season, so if you pop in during December you just may see some hard at work.
ADULT’S ONLY: Most of the holiday cheer in Virginia City is family friendly, but there are a couple of events that cater to adults. Get boozy—and feel free to dress up—during The Grinch Made Me Do It Saloon Crawl from 1-5 p.m. on Dec. 7 featuring specialty holiday drinks. You can also head to Piper’s Opera House for monthly bingo nights. On Dec. 19, the event will have festive flair.
