A Humble Request to Simply Say Hello
Let’s admit it, February can be a tough month. Winter feels like it’s blanketed us forever. The days are still short and cold and the return to more temperate, brighter days still seems like a dim light somewhere way too far off in the distance.
As I was starting to write this letter, staring out the window at the falling snow, longing for the days when I could take the dog out in shorts and a t-shirt, it struck me that February was the perfect timing for our Love Local edition and the perfect time to for me to talk for a minute about the wonderful businesses and the people behind them that help us bring this magazine to you every month.
Let’s face it, Reno isn’t known for conspicuous consumption. Very few luxury goods retailers have a presence here and the local economy, is in large part, driven by small, family owned businesses. Running a successful small business can be a rollercoaster ride and if you and I think that February is peak winter doldrums, imagine what the post-holiday vortex must feel like to them. While it’s a given that most businesses experience seasonality, the off-season can be a long and lonely experience.
So here is my humble ask. The businesses on our pages are incredibly supportive of what we do at City Lifestyle. They all share our vision for delivering highly relevant, compelling, beautifully packaged content to our readers every month. The folks that own these businesses are our neighbors and a huge part of what makes our community special so whether you’re in the market for new goods or services, why not take an extra moment or two to explore a little bit? Stop in, call, look around, find out what they’re all about, say hello, and maybe discover something new and great. I promise they’ll appreciate it, and perhaps it will brighten the back half of winter a little more for you as well.

Rise to the Top
When Dennyse Sewell sat in upper division classes at the University of Nevada in the early 2000s, musicals and the performing arts in general were about the furthest thing from her mind. Afterall, the McQueen High product was a conservation biology major, learning about how to protect the earth's biodiversity and ecosystems from extinction.
While stage-worthy performances and environmental responsibility may not be found in the same textbooks, they are two large areas of interests for Sewell. When the northern Nevada native graduated from UNR in 2004, she began looking for jobs and the conservation biology opportunities were not flooding her options list. What did become a real option was an opening at Reno’s Pioneer Center for an administrative assistant.
DENNYSE SEWELL MADE HER WAY FROM PIONEER CENTER ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT TO THE ORGANIZATION'S CEO
ARTICLE BY DAN ECKLES | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MELODY RICKETTS, MELODY JANE PHOTO
“When I was a student at UNR, I had all kinds of jobs. Ticket seller at the Pioneer Center was one of the many gigs I was fortunate to have,” Sewell says. “After graduation, I did a little conservation research and that was not the right path for me. I had like a quarter-life crisis. There was an opening in the office at the Pioneer Center; and because I had been on staff, I had a champion advocate.
“The executive director was told to ‘give me a shot. If it doesn’t work out, no harm, no foul… I did all the front office administrative work. Despite having no obvious work experience in my background. It turned into my life’s passion.”
Administrative assistant was just the first stop on Sewell’s climb on the Pioneer Center’s professional ladder. In less than a year, she was promoted to events manager. A year later, Sewell hopped into the role of director of events for development and youth programs.
Next came stops as managing director and executive director. It’s been 20 years since she took that administrative assistant job, and now, she’s reached the top. For the past 15 months, Sewell has overseen all operations at the Pioneer Center as its CEO.
“This is not where I imagined I’d find myself,” Sewell quips. “This has been the only office I’ve gone to every day for my entire career. The roles and responsibilities have evolved so much. It also means I’ve never gone to another job interview. That’s wild to reflect on.”
The Pioneer Center and its performing arts world has kept Sewell on her toes for two decades. Since she didn’t come from a background in the arts, she had a steep learning curve. That didn’t stop Sewell from soaking in every bit of knowledge she could along the way.

“One of the things about the nonprofit world, everyone wears a lot of hats,” the 43-year-old says. “Typically, non-profits are under-resourced and understaffed, no matter what kind. I’ve always had a passion. When you are surrounded by others and guided by a mission you all care about, the work you do every day encourages everyone to bring their best. Being surrounded by people who give 110 percent every day really encourages me. This career path has meant the learning has never stopped. There’s always an opportunity to try new things. I’ve never had a boring day in 20 years. I love that I’m able to thrive and grow in an industry where everyone is always growing.”
So, when you’ve climbed from the bottom to the top of your organization’s career ladder, what keeps you hungry to keep growing and trying to improve your organization?
Sewell says that’s easy to answer, emphasizing she’s far from tapped out on ambition. Sewell believes the Pioneer Center has always been an organization of innovation and she wants to make sure it continues to be known for that.
“In my experience, leaders have not put themselves before the importance of the mission. Leadership has not been an ego or proprietary thing. That’s something I’ve wanted to model,” Sewell stresses. “This is not about me.
It’s about the Pioneer Center, and really, it’s a bit bigger than that. It’s about the community.
“For me as CEO, the mission is to deepen or broaden the Pioneer’s impact and as long as I have the skills, ability and confidence of the board, I’m going to continue doing that. I feel like I’m brand new in this role and because the Pioneer is constantly evolving and doing new things, we should ask ‘what does the community want from a performing arts center?’”
The Center’s staff has a long list of what it believes can help the programming always be interesting, engaging, and challenging. Sewell’s leadership style promotes an environment where she and staff members collaborate to always ask what more can be done.
“I really want us to envision what the Pioneer Center can mean for the next 50 years,” Sewell says. “It’s been a staple in this community for 57 years. It was a wild, bold design at the time it was built and now everything has changed around the building. I want us to be equally bold—to ask what this block can mean for the next 50 years and what that can mean to others around the downtown area. Arts and culture can revitalize any urban core. We must use that momentum to push programming to other places in the community. Push it out to offer bold, collaborative programming all around the region.”

THIS WINTER, HIT THE SLOPES CLOSE TO HOME
ARTICLE BY GINNY PRIOR
Rosy cheeks and rich hot chocolate; skiing and sledding and skating and more. These are some of our favorite things in winter. Families in Reno are so close to the action, there’s every reason to book a ski-cation at a resort near you. Here are some of our favorite winter destinations for fun in the snow and the best après-skiing, too.
HYATT LAKE TAHOE RESORT, SPA AND CASINOINCLINE VILLAGE, NV
Just 35 miles from Reno and perfectly positioned for skiing at Mt. Rose and Diamond Peak, this lakeside retreat gives you good value for your room rate with lots of indoor and outdoor activities.
ON THE SNOW
For skiing, there’s a free Diamond Peak shuttle to take you the short distance to this family-friendly resort. You’ll feel the neighborhood vibe almost immediately at Diamond Peak, with its cozy lodges where guests can meet up for lunch and an end-of-the-day beverage. Almost every bowl, glade, and trail funnels down to the base lodge, so even the kids can’t get lost. The stunning vistas and challenging terrain don’t disappoint, either. There are over 600 acres and 1,840 vertical feet of runs at this community-owned ski resort.
Another family-focused resort, a short drive up the Mount Rose Highway, is a familiar site for folks from Reno. Much like Diamond Peak, Mount Rose feels like a nod to more gracious times, with stand-out customer service, from the rental staff to the lift operators. Black diamond shredders will appreciate the terrain parks and more challenging terrain in The Chutes, with plenty of groomers for skiers and boarders who just want to chill. Deals at Mount Rose include two-for-one lift tickets on Tuesdays.
APRÈS ACTIVITIES
After a day of rushing adrenaline, families can splash and soak in the Hyatt Lake Tahoe Resort, Spa and Casino’s outdoor pool and jetted whirlpools, with a backdrop of snowcapped mountains and lighted pines. Three chef-driven restaurants are on-site, including the lauded Lone Eagle Grille, with its stone fireplace and large windows looking out on Lake Tahoe.
Daily activities include snowshoe treks, arts and crafts, and hikes through the forest to Chickadee Ridge where birds flutter from the pines to eat from your hands, your hair, or wherever you sprinkle birdseed (but don’t offer them human food).
The award-winning Stillwater Spa at the Hyatt is known for its innovation, and the newest wellness offering is its “Touchless Trio” package, which incorporates hot and cold therapy. Guests start with an exhilarating visit to the freezing cold Cryo Chamber, which boosts the immune system in a variety of ways. Then, a warm, dreamy rest between two biomats that generate infrared heat, negative ions, and vibro-acoustic sound and aromatherapy. The final touchless treatment is a 30-minute float in an oyster-like orb called Pearl, that generates even more wellbeing and relaxation.
“It’s a full body wellness immersion experience,” says the Hyatt’s Spa and Wellness director Julie Orblych. Plus, she says the touchless treatments are priced so that “people can enjoy them more often, making wellness part of a lifestyle – not just a luxury treatment.”
EVERLINE RESORT & SPA – OLYMPIC VALLEY, CA.
Another of Hyatt’s outstanding offerings, this ski-in/ski-out resort at the base of Palisades Tahoe boasts a “mountain meets modern” vibe in the scenic Olympic Valley. Only 44 miles from Reno, this 405-room luxury resort has something for everyone.
ON THE SNOW
The largest ski resort in California and often touted as the best in the West, Palisades Tahoe has 6,000 acres of terrain, thanks to the 2023 opening of the Base to

Base Gondola that connects to the adjacent Alpine Resort. Palisades Tahoe is known for its annual snowfall averaging 400 inches or more thanks to its elevation and geographical location. It’s also the only ski resort in North America with three enclosed lifts that take you to its highest elevations.
APRÈS ACTIVITIES
Everline Resort & Spa is the epitome of a year-round resort, thanks to its championship golf course and renowned fly-fishing, along with its heated swimming pools, water slide, and hiking and biking trails. In winter, skaters glide across the ice on the resort’s own rink and enjoy activities like winter stargazing and cross-country skiing. Everline has its own sports shop for ski and snowboard rentals, and offers discounted lift tickets to Palisades Tahoe for guests.
RITZ-CARLTON, LAKE TAHOE – TRUCKEE,
CA.
Newly-renovated with amped-up après offerings, the Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe is the only luxury ski-in/ski-out hotel on the Northstar Mountain. It’s distinction as a AAA Five Diamond destination resort means guests can expect a memorable, full-service experience in a picturesque mountain location.
ON THE SNOW
Northstar is known as a family resort with its long, lazy groomers and forested trails. In fact, Logger’s Loop clocks in at 14 miles from top to bottom. With 20 lifts and just over 3100 acres, Northstar gets about 300 inches of snow a year and is often recognized as one of the most beautiful self-contained resorts in North America. This Vail Resorts property has panoramic views of Lake Tahoe and the Martis Valley and is the only place where you can ski on an extinct volcano, Mt. Pluto.
APRÈS ACTIVITIES
The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe has all the amenities you’d expect from a slope-side, luxury property. Just 39 miles from Reno, this celebrated mountain retreat even has heated cabanas “chalets” – new this winter – for a magical alpine experience. Each Clicquot winter cabana chalet comes with a private firepit, seating for eight (complete with furs), and the option to order champagne and caviar.
Other renovations include a new bar and dining space called the Living Room Lodge, meant to be the premier gathering place. Resort guests will be drawn to seductive views of the surrounding peaks, the silhouettes of towering pines, and a menu that celebrates locally sourced ingredients. With the signature Ritz Kids activities, a top-ofthe-line fitness center, a 17,000 square foot spa and world-class restaurants, guests have everything at their fingertips.

ideas and cool experiences that promise to refresh and rejuvenate you, and don't forget to inquire about a local's discount; many offer a little payment relief to those with a familiar zip code.
WAVETABLE AT THE REFUGE SPA
Massage has many benefits, including reducing muscle tension and stiffness, improving circulation and skin tone, and helping with digestive disorders and pain relief. And if you want all of those perks without being touched, Refuge’s touchless massage system puts the experience in your hands, making massage therapy a solitary experience.
Called “The Wellness Wave” this state-of-the-art table looks not unlike a tanning bed but without the claustrophobic closing lid. And instead of human touch, the wavetable uses hydrojets to pulse and
vibrate aching muscles. It feels a bit like laying on a waterbed that’s been enhanced with massage chair features, all without getting wet. Don’t forget to set the mood with LED light routines, music of your choice, and an enticing aroma.
After your Wavetable experience, we suggest ordering a cocktail from the full bar and taking a soak in the rooftop hot tub surrounded by bright and colorful artwork.
VICHY TABLE AT DOLCE VITA WELLNESS SPA
The Vichy table combines aqua therapy with a heated waterbed platform, color therapy, an aromatherapy steam bath, and a water-enhanced vibro-massage. Unlike the table above, the Vichy experiences are led by a qualified massage therapist with live water jets. There are a couple of related experiences to choose from including one that focuses on

Visits to Dolce Vita include full day spa access with the booking of every treatment so don’t forget to step foot into the sauna or lay back and read a book in one of several plush settings.
KNESKO GEMCLINICAL FACIAL AT SPA ATLANTIS
Spa Atlantis’ long list of accolades includes several “Best Reno Spa” nods and a Forbes Four-Star Spa award for nine straight years in a row—the only Reno spa to receive this designation.
Spa Atlantis is also the only location in Northern Nevada to offer the Knesko Skin collagen masks, and the 90-minute experience not only fights visible signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles, dryness, puffiness, and uneven skin tone, it will also make you feel younger by rebalancing your chakra energies. Every treatment includes the second skin mask as well as LED light therapy and a Gua Sha face massage for lymphatic drainage. It's a bit of a choose your own adventure experience, with options including a Nanogold Repair & Green Jade Rollers for lifting and firming skin. This selection reduces inflammation and balances the third eye chakra. Or, choose the Diamond Radiance & White Jade Rollers package, best for brightening, hydrating, and energizing the skin, while also balancing the crown chakra.
After your otherworldly facial, enjoy the spa’s other amenities, including an indoor pool and hot tub with full service lunch menu and several relaxation rooms with varying themes and benefits.

NANDA REDDY WEAVES A TALE OF IDENTITY, BELONGING, AND FAMILY SECRETS
A STORY TO TELL
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANGELA RUDOLPH
The curated lives we present to others rarely show the full picture, especially for those who’ve worked to separate their past from their present, forging new, unique identities.
Nanda Reddy’s family is extensive. Her father, one of seventeen siblings,
Nanda, her husband, and their two sons now live in Reno. She has a master’s degree in education and worked as a fourth-grade teacher. She’s written two books; her second is her debut novel, A Girl Within A Girl Within A Girl, set to release on March 4 (and is already avail-

and her mother, one of nine, gave Nanda a sprawling family of over fifty first cousins. While some families lose touch, Nanda’s family remains close, even with its large size. She’s a talented writer who immigrated from Guyana to Florida with her family when she was just nine years old. Guyana, located on South America’s northern coast, identifies with Caribbean culture and boasts a tropical climate and rich history. Nanda’s great-great-grandparents were from India and they migrated as indentured servants to Guyana when both countries were British-owned.
able for preorder). The book is an epic family saga, following the main character, Maya, an Indo-Guyanese woman, on a journey as she grapples with revealing her hidden past to her husband.
“The book is about reinvention,” Nanda explains. “While it’s not set in Reno, it is a frame story where the main character has to face the secrets she kept from her family and the past versions of herself. Reno is a place where people can reinvent themselves. Many transplants grow roots and come into themselves here, like I did, and that element is woven into the story.”

Nanda and her husband, a physician, moved to Reno for work. They thought they would stay a couple of years before moving on, but northern Nevada captured their hearts. The mountains provided skiing and hiking opportunities they couldn’t get in Florida, but it was the community, made of welcoming longtime residents and transplants from around the country, that helped them grow permanent roots.
Growing up, Nanda kept her writing a secret. She went for a practical degree and career, but never lost her passion for literature. An avid reader, she strives to emulate her favorite authors with her writing style. With her debut, she hopes to walk her readers through a propulsive story, written with attention to detail and approachable, lyrical prose.
A person who has reinvented herself to some degree, Nanda explores themes of identity in her novel. “How much of your past defines you (your upbringing and cultural framework) versus how much are you allowed to define yourself is a major part of Maya’s journey in the novel,” she says. “And I think a lot of Renoites can relate to that.”

Love-ly Wines
Owners of Mt. Rose Wine Co. share the best wines for the holiday
Valentine’s Day is a wonderful opportunity to express your feelings, and what better way to do that than with the perfect bottle of wine? Whether you’re planning an intimate dinner or a cozy night in, the right wine can enhance the experience and create lasting and loving memories.
Sparkling wines are a quintessential choice for this festive day. Champagne, with its rich history and celebratory nature, stands out as the classic option. However, prosecco and cava offer delightful alternatives that provide similar effervescence at a more accessible price point. The lively bubbles can effortlessly create a joyful atmosphere, making them ideal for toasting to love! We suggest the Francis Orban Extra Brut Champagne.
For those preferring a more intimate setting, a well-chosen red wine can best set the tone. A smooth, rich cabernet sauvignon or a velvety pinot noir can enhance the mood beautifully. These wines pair wonderfully
with hearty dishes like steak or roasted vegetables, making them ideal companions for a candlelit dinner. We suggest Aniello 006, a beautiful pinot noir from Argentina and The Grgich Hills Cabernet Sauvignon for a classic Napa option.
White wine enthusiasts might opt for a refreshing sauvignon blanc or a delicate rosé. These lighter options coupled with seafood, salads, or even chocolate-covered strawberries make them a delightful complement to romantic ambiance. A favorite, La Vignette Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire Valley, will please the heart.
This Valentine’s Day, consider the wine you choose as an integral part of your celebration. With thoughtful selections that resonate with your personal taste, you can create an unforgettable moment filled with warmth, connection, and, of course, exceptional wine.
Doug and Lacie Flannery are the owners of Mt. Rose Wine Co. and are both WSET Level 3 certified.
Handmade Soap
Add a spa-like feel to your home with this refreshing soap recipe that's simple to make at home.
ARTICLE BY ANGI HOCKETT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
ingredients
• 2 lb. goat’s milk melt-and-pour soap
• 1 lemon rind, zested
• 3 tablespoons of dried lavender buds
• 2 tablespoons of honey
• 15 drops of lavender essential oil
• 6 drops of lemon essential oil
• jar or bowl for melting soap base
• Silicone mold
directions
Chop soap into smaller pieces. It will melt faster this way. Place in bowl and microwave (or double boil). Be careful to watch soap and not let it burn. If you are using microwave, heat in 30 second increments, stirring frequently. Once soap is melted add your essential oils first. Once essential oils have been added and mixed thoroughly, add the lavender buds, lemon zest and honey. Have your mold ready to go, on a flat, even surface. You’ll want to move quickly before the soap cools too much. Mix everything thoroughly again, and pour mixture into mold. Let the soap cool for 2-3 hours until bars are completely solid. Wrap or package however you like.

When you work with the David Morris Group you’re supporting the entrepreneurial spirit of Northern Nevada and leveraging over 40 years of experience, history, and quality vendor referrals for all your real estate and life needs. Truly, we probably know someone who can help you with anything.
