The Stories We Want to Tell
As I’ve previously mentioned in this space, I have a great aversion to sounding redundant and while I wrote about the meaning of home for last year’s “Home” issue, I just couldn’t find it in myself to do it again. Interestingly, my desire to find another angle made me think about our content, how we approach storytelling, and how we’re constantly trying to find interesting topics and dive a little deeper into what makes Reno special.
To be fair, content is one of the few pieces of publishing this magazine that I have delegated. Our managing editor, Nora Tarte, runs the editorial side of the show and as an experienced writer, editor, content director, and journalism professor, she has the chops to deliver a great magazine every month. But she and I both know that complacency is the mother of all evils so we spend a lot of time going over topics and angles.
I’m obviously not objective but I think we do a pretty good job at hitting the mark. And every once in a while, I feel completely validated.
About a month ago, I saw an unknown number come in on my business line. As someone who makes a lot of outbound calls to folks I don’t know, I always try to answer.
It only took a few seconds for me to realize that this call wasn’t what I expected. It wasn’t spam! In fact, it was one of our readers who had taken the time to find my number and called to thank me. She said she and her friends appreciated getting the magazine every month and that she had been particularly inspired by our cover story. Now mind you, I get lots of great feedback from our reader community, but until then, no one had ever taken the time to reach out to me like that.
In all honesty, THAT might have been the most fulfilling moment I’ve had in the 16 months since we launched.
I hope you’ve enjoyed our recent editions as much as I have. While Nora and I both agree that we’ll never be a platform for investigative journalism, and that we’ll always deliver some lighter content, we want to continue to push deeper into our subjects and for you to feel like your time with us was time well spent. And to the reader that called, thank you!
Thanks for reading!

BUILDING A COMMUNITY
GLENHAVEN EXPERTLY COMBINES NATURE’S SERENITY AND URBAN CONVENIENCES IN THE HEART OF SOUTH RENO
ARTICLE BY ANGELA RUDOLPH PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAUL DYER
If you take a drive just off South Virginia Street in South Reno, nestled into the countryside where city meets nature, you’ll find a new development starting to take shape, Glenhaven. Twenty-four large homesites will create an intimate community of unique custom-built homes, many of which run right along Thomas Creek.
“Glenhaven was inspired by a vision to create a neighborhood that blends modern living with the rural character of South Reno,” explains Leslie Davidson, director of sales and marketing at Compass Real Estate and part of the visionary development team that is bringing Glenhaven to life.
The area around Glenhaven was once home to large, family-owned ranches. Over time, many were subdivided into multi-acre homesites. “The result is a very low-density area where the natural beauty of the land has largely been preserved,” she says. “The goal with Glenhaven was to remain consistent with this feel by offering a small number of large homesites.”
Glenhaven in South Reno offers amazing access to the outdoors. It’s about a 20 minute drive up to Mt. Rose and about 26 minutes to the shores of Lake Tahoe and Incline Village. Still, it offers proximity to the vibrant commercial corridor in Reno with nearby shops, restaurants, and

other businesses. “We wanted to create a community that embraces that ‘town and country’ feel; a setting that gives residents the opportunity to enjoy their own private sanctuary, in a location that is very accessible to conveniences, services, and recreation,” Leslie says.
Glenhaven’s development concept combines local builders and architects committed to creating distinctive properties for each buyer. “It was important to partner with a group of highly experienced and well-established local builders to ensure that purchasers are in good hands when it comes to constructing their home,” says Leslie.
Purchasers can either put their own team and designs together, or they can choose from buy and build packages. Each of the packages results in close collaboration between builder, architect, and developer, to produce a custom home design for a specific homesite at Glenhaven, offered together with the land. These designs can either be executed as-is, or they can be tailored to further meet the purchaser’s needs and are convenient choices for those who don’t want to have to design something entirely from scratch.
“The land is very conducive to a variety of architectural styles, including modern
designs with features that enable the indoor-outdoor lifestyle people in Reno are looking for,” Leslie says.
Leslie works alongside the principal developers, her father, Roger Davidson, and her husband, Adam Giordano, of Thomas Creek Development. The entire team’s passion for Reno and creating lasting communities in the area runs deep as they work to fill needs in our community. “The opportunity to shape a slice of a very special place, and the desire to do so in a way that feels in character with this long-established community, is what I find most rewarding about being part of this project,” says Leslie.

COLBY FREY SHARES THE FREY RANCH PHILOSOPHY
Colby Frey is not a man who sits still.
"I'm the guy who can't sit at a desk. When I do interviews like this, I often drive my truck around the ranch," Frey says. As he speaks, he is confident and casual in his passion for farming, family, and whiskey-making.
distilleries that source grains from large-scale producers, Frey Ranch continues the family crops and grows its own barley, wheat, corn, and rye— totaling between 600 and 800 acres annually—ensuring complete control over the quality and sustainability of
"GROWING UP ON THE FARM, IT'S A BIG PART OF ME."
Frey Ranch Distillery, located in the heart of farming territory of Northern Nevada: Fallon, is a true ground-toglass operation. Every grain that goes into their whiskey is grown on their own farm, often traveling less than a mile from field to fermentation. And this isn’t just a marketing point; it's a philosophy, one that has been passed down through generations.
STEWARDS OF THE LAND
"Growing up on the farm, it's a big part of me," Frey says of his family having grown barley, wheat, corn, and rye for several generations. His family actually procured the first deeded property of Genoa in 1854. "We are temporary stewards of the land and I believe we should pass it along in good or better condition than where we found it."
Even after moving the family’s farming land from Genoa to Lakeridge in Reno and finally to Churchill County where they are currently, that deep respect for the earth influences every step of the process. Unlike many
the raw ingredients. The other acres of their farm are used to grow alfalfa, which is exported on a global level.
Each grain is slow grown, and nitrogen fertilizer, often used to enhance and speed up the growing process, is left off their crops. Even the byproducts of the distillation process are put to good use: solids feeding the dairy cattle on the neighboring farm as well as the liquids from the still going back into the soil, helping balance its natural alkaline pH. This dedication to doing it slowly, with longevity (for both business and for the land) has guided Frey Ranch from its inception.
"We didn’t want to sacrifice quality—we want to do it the right way," Frey says. That commitment led them to build their own malting system, a rarity even among craft distillers. Rather than sourcing pre-malted barley, the team at Frey Ranch developed an in-house system to control every aspect of the process. The result? A whiskey that is shaped by the soil, climate, and careful craftsmanship that define Frey Ranch.

HOME MEANS NEVADA
The climate in Northern Nevada is anything but forgiving, yet Frey embraces the challenge. With over 170 years of farming knowledge in their lineage, the Frey family has mastered irrigation, soil management, and crop rotation to ensure a consistent and high-quality yield. This deep agricultural expertise has allowed them to experiment with unique grains, producing small-batch whiskeys that push the boundaries of traditional spirits. Their oat whiskey, wheat whiskey, and other innovative offerings provide flavors rarely found on the market. This also gets them noticed in the whiskey community. They have won many awards, but one Frey is distinctly proud of? Top 10 in Whiskey Advocates Fall Building Guide, shortly after their initial launch. It puts Nevada on the map, one often marked by states known for whiskey making like Kentucky or Tennessee.
While Frey Ranch remains deeply rooted in its local community, its reach has expanded far beyond the Nevada state line. Today, Frey whiskeys are distributed in 12 states, with online availability in 32. Still, they maintain a hands-on, smallbatch approach that sets them apart in
"WE WANT TO DO IT THE RIGHT WAY."
the industry. Those looking for a taste straight from the source can visit the tasting room, open on Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m.
At its core, Frey Ranch is about more than just whiskey—it’s about legacy, sustainability, and an unrelenting passion for the craft. "As a farmer, you have to be pretty optimistic," Frey says with a chuckle. And that optimism, paired with generations of knowledge and an unwavering commitment to quality, is what makes every bottle of Frey Ranch whiskey a true testament to the land it comes from.
Colby’s love for farming extends to his family as well. He and his wife, Ashley have an 8-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl who love being out on the ranch. Frey takes pride in building their confidence to create something from scratch—just as he has with their family business.

ADULT SCIENCE
THE DISCOVERY OFFERS EVENTS FOR 21+
ARTICLE BY NORA HESTON TARTE
The Discovery is most commonly associated with families, and often specifically small children. The science and technology center’s interactive exhibits may appear to cater to a younger crowd, but that doesn’t mean the space isn’t enjoyable for adults, too. “All our exhibitions, temporary and permanent, are designed
to appeal to learners of all ages, including adults,” says Patrick Turner, the museum’s Chief Advancement Officer. That includes the rotating exhibits, the building lab, the 3D printer, and even the giant jungle gym at the center of it all.
The Discovery offers programming that not only includes adults but is made specifically for them. Social Science, for example, is an adult’s only science series occurring on select evenings. They include adult libations and small bites while patrons enjoy the museum. Each one is themed and the various activities all feed into the central idea. For example, the Spells and Incantations event in February was inspired by the wizarding world and asked adults to create custom wands, formulate their own magical potions, and participate in Harry Potterthemed activities while dining on butterbeer flavored gelato. Every event features science demonstrations, hands-on labs, expert presentations, and music.
Science Distilled is another adults-only event series offered about once each month (although dates vary). The next part of the informal lecture series aimed at making cutting-edge science approachable to all will take place on April 19. The. Theme? Drive-in for Science. Those who sign up will watch the film A Year In Space about a NASA experiment featuring identical twin astronauts Mark and Scott Kelly. The event takes place off campus at the West Wind El Rancho Drive-In Theater.
“All our exhibitions... are designed to appeal to learners of all ages, including adults."
In May the Science Distilled event is back at the museum. A theme has yet to be announced, but the program will take place 7-9 p.m. on May 29. To learn more, keep an eye on the website, https://nvdm.org/exhibitions-and-events

Nestled in the heart of Reno at Mayberry Landing, Madein Collective is redefining the local dining scene with its eclectic offerings and cozy atmosphere. This intimate eatery, though modest in size, boasts a full menu that caters to every palate, including the adventurous souls willing to

sample a garlic martini—a concoction that felt far fetched for me.
Spoiler alert, I tried it. And its subtle green hue and bold, garlicky essence provided a surprisingly delightful twist to my evening out.
“Madein Food & Drink Collective was born from a desire to unite some of Reno’s most beloved artisanal food purveyors under one roof, creating a vibrant culinary hub,” says Rachel Macintyre, co-founder and partner. Other owners include Shawn and Marcia Giordano, Will Truce, Jake Conway, and Amy Gerbus.
LOCAL ROOTS, GLOBAL FLAVORS
With Madein moved in, no one goes hungry. Madein is available for a lite breakfast and full lunch and dinner. Stop by on your way to work for a classic ham and cheese croissant or berry puff pastry to go alongside your espresso. Or maybe take a long work lunch with an Italian soda and toasted focaccia flatbread. The
most popular option, meet up with friends or loved ones for an indulgent dinner, complete with an array of pasta and whipped sheep’s milk ricotta.
"Complementing the food is our localized bar and cocktail program, curated by Black Rabbit, which proudly features beers, ciders, and spirits sourced from within 50 miles. And for coffee lovers, a collaboration with Forged Coffee Roasting. This dedication to quality and community ensures every bite and sip reflects the heart of Reno.”
PULL UP A CHAIR - WE’RE ALL FRIENDS HERE
The ambiance at Madein Collective is both inviting and electric. The modern look and feel combine with an open kitchen and friendly staff to make you feel right at home. That is, if your home includes stellar food and thoughtful drinks delivered right to your table. You could spend several easy hours with friends or family, chatting and mowing through a few courses and cocktails.
"What sets Madein apart is its deep commitment to local sourcing, partnering with Reno’s finest farmers, purveyors, breweries, and distilleries such as Beloved Breads, Prema Farms, Mountain Mushroom, DFI, Tandem Chocolates, Izzy B’s Bakery, Dorinda’s, Frey Ranch, 10 Torr, Theory, and many more,” says Macintyre. “This dedication to supporting the community is matched by our intimate, minimalist, and modern dining concept. Madein is designed to feel like the perfect stop between work and home, blending an elevated yet casual atmosphere with fine dining and expertly crafted cocktails for a truly unique experience.”
The space, though cozy, is thoughtfully designed to encourage camaraderie among patrons. It's the kind of place where you're likely to strike up a conversation with fellow diners or recognize a familiar face from your favorite local hangout.
ITALIAN INSPIRATION MEETS NORTHERN NEVADA FLAIR
Chef Shawn Giordano brought his vision of a fresh Italian concept to life through his innovative food program, adding his modern twist to classic flavors. The culinary offerings are as diverse as they are delectable. The menu features a range of dishes, including something for a classic eater, or perhaps someone willing to branch out and try the octopus sandwich for lunch. A standout specialty is the jumbo ravioli (seriously - you’re served a single, massive ravioli), which can be savored with a traditional Bolognese sauce or enjoyed in a meatless version for those preferring a vegetarian option.
“Madein Food & Drink Collective was born from a desire to unite some of Reno’s most beloved artisanal food purveyors under one roof, creating a vibrant culinary hub."
During my visit, I indulged in a few of their specials—dishes that rotate regularly based on seasonal ingredients and the chef's creative inspirations. Each plate was a testament to the restaurant's commitment to freshness and flavor. The chopped salad, in particular, was a delight; divinely dressed, I found myself tempted to lick the plate clean.
“At Madein, the food takes center stage, setting us apart with Chef Shawn Giordano’s innovative approach to Italian cuisine,” says Macintyre. “Every dish is fresh, delicious, and mindfully
created, blending tradition with a modern twist to showcase the finest local ingredients.”
Madein Collective is more than just a restaurant; it's a neighborhood gem that effortlessly adapts to various occasions. Whether you're a local seeking a comforting spot to unwind after a long workday or someone looking to traverse town for celebratory libations and special gatherings, this establishment fits the bill. Its effortless blend of innovative cuisine, convivial atmosphere, and dedicated staff makes it a must-visit destination in Reno's ever-evolving dining landscape.

A Rare Gem in Reno’s desirable Montreux neighborhood
ARTICLE BY NORA HESTON TARTE PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROB SIMPSON PHOTOGRAPHY
Luxury is promised in South Reno’s Montreux neighborhood. Opened in June of 1997, the 726acre community boasting 540 homesites was designed to resemble Old World architectural styles reminiscent of the great country manors of Scotland, England, Ireland, and France. A true gem tucked against Reno’s Sierra Nevada mountains, terrain ranges from high desert to rolling meadows to deep forest with elevations between 5,476 and 5,952 feet, making it not just perfect for golf lovers but also for those who simply love to live surrounded by natural beauty.
If you've ever considered a home in Reno's gated Montreux neighborhood, a current listing in the area, represented by Heather Neal and Brooke Sullivan of Sullivan-Neal Luxury Real Estate with Dickson Realty, may be your sign. The house sits on the 18-hole Jack Nicklaus signature course’s 12th fairway. Considered part of the area’s “signature loop,” it is just one in a lineup of custom homes located 20 minutes from the Reno-Tahoe International Airport and 30 minutes to Lake Tahoe.
The 6,342 square foot home at 5550 Lausanne Drive features stunning 25-foot ceilings. It includes five bedrooms (two of which are primary suites), four-and-a-half bathrooms, a den, and other bonus rooms on .62 acres. Built in 2002, the home is brimming with upgrades from a Wolf induction stove top and grill and industrial draft hood laid in Viatera quartz countertops in the kitchen to wide-plank white oak hardwood floors and designer light fixtures throughout.
Enjoying the scenery from this two-story home is easy. Brand new exterior windows outfitted with automated Hunter
Douglas window coverings open to the picturesque outdoor views of not just the well-maintained course, but the surrounding mountains, creeks, and forest, as well. The lot not only includes creature comforts such as solar lighting and a programmable irrigation system but is landscaped with mature lush pine and aspen trees.
The three-car garage includes extra space for a golf cart, an EV charger, built-in storage, and a pet wash station.
Outside of your personal oasis, the rest of the community is flush with amenities. Between the par-72, private golf course, four

full-sized practice holes, Golden Bear Tees, target greens, putting, and chipping areas, golf lovers will be in paradise.
Members can also enjoy a remodeled 34,000 square foot Old World Clubhouse, grill and lounge, two separate private dining rooms, locker rooms, a newly remodeled 5,000-square-foot fitness center with swimming pool, tennis courts, children’s playground, and a dog park.

How Do You Get Ready For Spring?
The sun stays out later, the flowers are bursting in bloom, and the bees are buzzing as they defrost from our chilling winter. Nature has its own way of preparing for the season of Spring and we wanted to ask some of our favorite locals how they get ready.

“Spring is a season of renewal, and for me, it’s a time to refresh and celebrate... Living in a small house with limited storage, this ritual of 'switching out winter for spring' is incredibly fulfilling. I made a promise to thrift as much as possible and it’s been a rewarding experience. By upcycling, I’m doing my part to keep clothes out of landfills while discovering unique pieces to update our wardrobes. My husband loves this part because it gives him more space in the garage!"

“Getting ready for spring means embracing the Sierra Mountains and making the most of the stunning alpine landscape, whether it's hitting the slopes for some spring snowboarding with my family at one of our nearby resorts or unwinding with a seasonal craft brew at some of my favorite local downtown breweries, Spring in Nevada offers a great range of possibilities.”

Shelby Rockers
"I naturally shift my focus to outdoor activities. Whether it’s a peaceful walk in nature or a hike to admire the vibrant colors of spring, being outside helps me feel refreshed and energized. Spring also brings bike rides and trips to the farmers’ market, where I enjoy fresh, in-season produce that’s both nutritious and delicious. Prioritizing outdoor movement and wholesome foods this time of year helps me feel my best—physically and mentally. So, take advantage of the season, get outside, and let spring inspire a healthier lifestyle!”
