On pages of glossy magazines and social media websites, the work of Houston interior designer Cindy Aplanalp Ruzicka dazzles.
ARTICLE BY DIANE COWEN
Well-appointed bars, charming pantries, beautiful kitchens and luxurious bathrooms are the stock in trade of Cindy and her team at Chairma Design Group. In recent years, her life and her work have turned toward better health.
Cindy’s work has been honored by Houston’s Best, Prism and ASID. This month, she is being honored as the Houston Design District’s newest Leader In Design.
A West Texas native, Cindy moved to Houston more than 30 years ago. She was busy raising children when she found herself in her 40s and in need of a job. She’d lived in homes, fixed them up and sold them and was good at it.
Having lived in several homes, she understood how every room in a home should live, and she knew she would be good at interior design. Her philosophy is that every home should have function, beauty, ease and purpose, but above all, they should have balance.
About two and a half years ago, Cindy met the love of her life – Dion Ruzicka –and they married 21 days after their second date. After four months of marriage, Dion became ill and was diagnosed with lymphatic leukemia. Instead of an arduous regimen of traditional medicine, they opted for a natural method of breathing exercises and cold plunge treatments. Today, leukemia shows up only slightly in his lab work.
That experience led them to open Loyly, a cold-plunge and sauna lounge where people of all ages take the plunge for better health. “This lifestyle is so good for you,” Cindy said, noting that she gave up alcohol and sugar and has lost 40 pounds.
For more than 85 years, it’s been our privilege to assist the most prominent members of Houston society in establishing their legacies to become part of our city’s extraordinary heritage. Only at Geo. H. Lewis & Sons can you create a remarkable final tribute that exemplifies your place in Houston’s history, guaranteed.

There is something to be said about carb loading to start the day, enjoying a yeasty snack before a meal, or appreciating the perfect amount of layers in an extra large croissant. Fresh ingredients, including top-notch butter, hand-milled grain, and the use of centuries-old recipes, are the reasons many will happily stand in line to pay top dollar for bakery bread. While some might scoff at the idea of spending $10 on a loaf of sourdough, there is CONTINUED >

no comparison to the bread that is pre-sliced and wrapped in plastic on a grocery store shelf. In Houston, pastry fans have their pick of where to snag freshly baked loaves and innovative pastries and exactly which restaurants or coffee shops are wholesale customers.
“There is just something magical about bread that is made that day,” says Urban Harvest shopper Jessica Norman. “Not only does it add something to the meal, but you can really taste the ingredients that went into it. Freshly baked bread and pastries are a staple in our house, especially on the weekends.”
Houston chef Omar Pereney just announced a new location of his popular croissant spot, Love Croissants, and in a recent interview, he commented about the Bayou City’s love for baked goods. “People are very appreciative of having that freshly baked product, so that’s why we decided, let’s try to do a full-blown retail store in the Heights,” he said. We’ve rounded up some of the best bread in Houston, but don’t take our word for it. Find a bakery, coffee shop, or restaurant nearby and try out their bread service because chances are you won’t be disappointed.
Established in 2019 by French-trained baker Otto Sanchez, Magnol has earned a reputation as one of Houston’s top bakeries. Its croissants, baguettes, and pastries are featured at local restaurants like Rosie Cannonball, Ostia, and Le Jardinier. Those looking for a weekend treat should arrive early to snag popular pastries, including eclairs, cookies, and tarts. magnolfrenchbaking.com
The popular croissant shop from Omar Pereney started as an experiment in his test kitchen in 2022. After selling out at Urban Harvest every weekend, Pereney decided to source to local coffee shops before opening a brick-and-mortar store in Midtown. His second location will open this summer in the Heights, serving large croissants in signature flavors like chocolate, almond, and ham and cheese, along with breakfast sandwiches and savory pies. lovecroissants.com

CLASSIC CAESAR SALAD GETS A FLAVORFUL UPGRADE WITH SPANISH INGREDIENTS AND AN UNCONVENTIONAL PRESENTATION.
Caesar salad is on almost every lunch or dinner menu at restaurants worldwide. Eaten in its traditional form or as a wedge, with chicken on top or in a wrap, its flavors have made it a go-to since it was invented by Italian immigrant Caesar Cardini in Tijuana, Mexico, in 1924.
Rex Hospitality's chef Nico Baizan relies on depth of flavor and an untraditional serving method to take his Caesar Cups from good to delicious at Maven at Sawyer Yards. mavenhouston.com
When chef Nico Baizan envisioned his take on traditional Caesar salad, he knew he wanted it to be a dish eaten like a taco. "I love eating with my hands – I feel like it's the most comfortable way of eating." Baizan uses baby gem lettuce instead of traditional Romaine because of its crunch, texture, and earthy taste.
Inside each baby gem lettuce is a relish made with a combination of piquillo and piparra peppers, cured brown (anchoa), and white anchovies (boquerones). Piquillos are small roasted red bell peppers typical of northern Spanish cuisine, while piparras are unripe peppers found in the Basque region. According to Baizan, the peppers, combined with the boquerones (cured in vinegar) and the anchoa (cured in oil and salt), give the dish another layer of complex flavors.
"The menu at Maven at Sawyer Yards leans into Spanish influences, which is why we opted to use Manchego cheese," said the chef. "We use Manchego, which has been aged for 18 months because it is creamier and offers a more tart flavor profile than typical parmesan."

Buffalo Bayou Park’s 10-year milestone highlights its investments in conservation, recreation, and community connectivity.
Buffalo Bayou has been a defining feature of Houston for nearly two centuries. Stretching 52 miles from the Texas prairie to the Gulf of Mexico, Buffalo Bayou has played a central role in shaping the city from a quiet port in 1836 to one of the largest cities in the nation.
Over the years, it has served as a major route for trade, a gathering place for the community, and a space for relaxation and recreation. Since 1986, the Buffalo Bayou Partnership (BBP) has been invested in preserving and improving the waterway for the entire community. Today, in a public/private partnership with the City of Houston, BBP manages a 10-mile stretch of the bayou, spanning from Shepherd Drive through downtown and out to the Port of Houston Turning Basin.
To mark its 10-year milestone, BBP has launched the "Year in 10s" campaign. This initiative celebrates the park's anniversary and highlights BBP's impact across the entire 10-mile stretch of Buffalo Bayou.
Buffalo Bayou Park has been a part of Houston's landscape since October 2015, covering 160 acres and becoming one of the city's most popular green spaces.
More than just a park, it features public art, extensive trails, and the Cistern—an underground reservoir transformed into a space for art exhibits by world-renowned artists.
Many well-known sites are part of the park, including Eleanor Tinsley Park, The Water Works, Johnny Steele Dog Park, and the Waugh Bat Bridge. Other landmarks, such as the Houston Police Officers' Memorial, Tapley Tributary, Wortham Foundation Grove, and Lost Lake, are also part of the expansive green space. Over the years, the park has evolved into more than a scenic retreat within the city – it serves as a central gathering place where people come together to explore, connect, and experience Houston's outdoor spaces in new ways.
Keeping Buffalo Bayou clean is a big part of BBP’s mission. In 2023 alone, they removed 2,000 cubic yards of trash and debris—the equivalent of 167 commercial dump truck loads—preventing it from reaching Galveston Bay.
Beyond the park, BBP has been working on improving connectivity and expanding public spaces along Buffalo Bayou East. This section, running from US-59 to the Port of Houston Turning Basin, is the focus of the Buffalo Bayou East 10-Year Plan.
Spanning from 2022 to 2032, the Buffalo Bayou East 10-Year Plan aims to create new parks, cultural hubs, and vibrant, connected neighborhoods. BBP has made significant progress thanks to gifts from the Kinder Foundation and public support from Harris County and the City of Houston. In just three years, they've opened a new neighborhood park and an affordable housing community, with ongoing engagement efforts in the Greater East End and Fifth Ward to shape what comes next.
Looking ahead, BBP remains committed to strengthening connections between people and nature, keeping the bayou clean, and making Houston a greener, more welcoming place. Whether through the Year in 10s celebration or the Buffalo Bayou East projects, the goal remains to create spaces where the city can come together and thrive. buffalobayou.org
