Reflecting on Community and Traditions During the Holiday Season

Dear Readers,

As the holiday season unfolds, we’re reminded that each family’s traditions are unique and deeply special, yet there are many that also weave us together, creating a shared sense of community. They’re the markers of time, the practices that pull us together, and the stories we tell year after year. In the Rochester area, we are fortunate to witness these traditions come to life, each December offering a renewed sense of connection and belonging. This time of year, our neighborhoods shine a little brighter. Events like Lagniappe illuminate not just our downtown streets but the spirit of our community, with families gathering under the glow of festive lights and friends reconnecting in the chill of winter evenings. The Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, symbolizes a return to light, a reminder that new beginnings are always around the corner, even in the depths of winter. This is the season for looking ahead, for cultivating hope, and for celebrating the simple moments that make life meaningful. Since launching in May, Rochester City Lifestyle has grown with the community’s warm welcome and engagement. As we approach 2025, we’re filled with gratitude for this shared journey. Each month, we bring stories to life that reflect the unique, vibrant energy of our area, and it’s a privilege to be part of your lives in this way.  I also want to acknowledge that none of this would be possible without the support of our amazing local businesses and advertising partners. These partners have not only helped make Rochester City Lifestyle a reality, but they also play a vital role in keeping our community thriving. As you enjoy this holiday season, I encourage you to support them by shopping local, visiting their spaces, and spreading the word. Together, we can continue to uplift and strengthen our community. So, as we move through this season, let’s remember that the heart of our community lies in our shared traditions, our mutual support, and our commitment to each other. Thank you for being part of this journey with us. Here’s to a joyful holiday season and a bright new year filled with possibility.

With gratitude,

December 2024

Lottie Mae

Finding beauty in the smallest things, and the importance of gathering.

I happened to stumble upon Lottie Mae this summer when our team was out doing research for another editorial.  As we walked past the window of the cutest little shop tucked off of Auburn road, we knew we had to go in.  Not only did we find the perfect place to shop for treasures, but we also had the pleasure of meeting Jennifer Gallegos, a woman who welcomed us into her space with open arms, and made us feel like we were stepping into her home.

Jennifer started Lottie Mae in 2018 after 20 years of working in the pharmacy field.  Lottie Mae started out as a small, artisan candle company that grew into a lifestyle retail shop in Rochester Hills, Michigan.  While they no longer pour candles in their workshop, they still curate little, everyday luxuries in the shop, and have become a destination for curated decor & gifts.

Lottie Mae treasures.

Over the past few months we've had the pleasure of getting to know Jennifer more, and we have been touched by her kindness, her generous spirit, her deep ties to her community and her dedication to creating a space where everyone feels welcomed and cared for.  When we got to thinking about the season of gathering, Jennifer was the first person to come to mind.

Creating memories for our loved ones is the main reason we choose to gather around dinner tables and living rooms with one another.  There is no rule book for "how" a table should be set, or "what" is needed to create beautiful memories, but if you're like Jennifer, you show your love and your care for your people by taking the extra step to make things beautiful for them.

We asked Jennifer if she would be willing to lend us some of her favorite things for a table setting we were looking to create and she didn't hesitate for a moment.  We spent the afternoon in the gorgeous courtyard of the Chapman House, designing our dream dinner table with all of our finds from Lottie Mae.  Needless to say, we could hardly stand that the table was set only for photos, and not for a dinner of our own.

This December, wherever you live, however you celebrate and whoever you choose to spend your time with - take a second to find gratitude in the gathering, whatever that looks like for you.

Remember...the little things, really are the big things.

Lottie Mae pays homage to Jennifer's grandmother, Noreen Lottie and her mother, Cynthia Mae who were both highly creative women with an entrepreneurial spirit, both of whom she misses dearly.

Lottie Mae is located at 1524 E. Auburn Road, Suite 10, Rochester Hills, Michigan, 48307.

Hours: Wednesday, Thursday, + Friday 11-6pm | Saturday 10-5pm | Closed: Sunday, Monday, + Tuesday.  Be sure to follow @lottiemaeco on social media, as Jennifer is always hosting something special like book clubs, workshops and curated collaborations with other local small businesses.

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”

As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.

Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.

One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.

Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.

These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just

about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”

We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.

To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.

The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.com

The Spa MD

A SPACE DEDICATED TO GIVING PEOPLE THE GIFT OF FEELING THEIR BEST FOR OVER 20 YEARS.

Dedicated to providing the finest quality aesthetic medical care treatments available, the professional, friendly, expert team founded by board-certified plastic surgeon Joseph E. Mark, MD., has consistently dedicated itself to patients’ comfort, safety, and desired aesthetic results. The Spa MD offers a range of services including CoolSculpting, CoolTone, injectable fillers, botox, chemical peels, facials, lasers, and more. We had the opportunity to sit down with facility director since 2002, Tina Polleiner, to learn about what makes this space, and this team so special. With med-spas popping up on every corner, it's become even more important to The Spa MD team to continue to offer services at the highest level.  They pride themselves on being leaders in their industry, staying focused on continuing their education and never compromising service.  Contrary to what you may see at other med-spas, they are proud to say that they are never the first practice to offer a service first, based on the motto instilled in them by Dr. Mark; "we only offer thoroughly researched products, treatments and devices that offer real results."  They exercise this belief in every area of their expertise because they know that ultimately, the decisions they make will have direct impact in their patients' lives.  The philosophy of The Spa MD has always been wholeheartedly believing that their patients are at the heart of everything they do.  Their goal is always to ensure patients feel cherished and valued every time they visit.  What means the most to them, is that their patients trust in their integrity and expertise, and that they are always being guided in the right direction for the best possible aesthetic outcome.

In an industry that can be viewed as luxury, The Spa MD team knows that what they do for people can be life changing.  We asked some of their team members why they love what they do, and they had no shortage of examples of how they've seen patients lives impacted directly.  "Seeing the positive impact my work has on my patients is what inspires me to continue to grow and learn in my industry. I believe my work goes much further than the superficial level.  Self care is a luxury we all deserve that affects us inside and out. Seeing the confidence I can give my patients is the best reward. I had a young woman who had severe scarring on her face that left her unable to wear makeup. After multiple sessions with a Skin Resurfacing laser and Microneedling, she had her full confidence back. Hearing of the compliments she was receiving throughout our skincare journey made this a special one for both of us", said Samantha Follebout, Skin Care and Laser Specialist.

Throughout our conversation with Tina at The Spa MD, it was clear how important their patients are to them - many of them becoming like family after providing services to them for decades of their life.   "What we do here can be a real gift for people.  It can change the way they walk through their life, and how lucky are we to get to be a part of that! That's not something we take lightly."

Pouring into people is a common thread that weaves itself into every decision that is made at The Spa MD.  For the past 15 years, the team has been partnering with Grace Centers of Hope in Pontiac, a non-profit, Christian organization committed to positively changing the lives of the unwanted, addicted, and homeless.  They offer many services, including emergency

“I believe these treatments go beyond aesthetics; they can foster a deeper sense of self-acceptance and empowerment.” - Jennett McLane

shelter, food, clothing, and medical care, as well as addiction recovery programs and job training. With the support of donors, Grace Centers of Hope can continue to provide these essential services to those in need. Each December, The Spa MD collects donations, gifts, and much needed items such as cleaning supplies, and toiletries.  They welcome everyone to drop off donations to their location, regardless of patient status.

If you're looking for a space to call home for your med-spa needs, we're pretty sure we found the perfect place.

BRIGHT LIGHT SHOW

BRIGHT LIGHTS, SMILING FACES AND A LITTLE SOMETHING EXTRA TO START THE HOLIDAY SEASON

More than 1 million sparkling lights in every shade of the rainbow illuminate the streets from Thanksgiving week through early January during The Big, Bright Light Show in downtown Rochester, Michigan.

“The Big, Bright Light Show was created to draw attention to downtown Rochester as a holiday shopping destination. Over the years, the show has helped

us attract new businesses, as well as support existing businesses so they can continue to call downtown home,” says Kristi Trevarrow, Executive Director of the Rochester Downtown Development Authority (DDA). “Additionally, the Show has become a source of pride for our community. Residents and visitors continue to come to Rochester to see the Show and make memories.”

Entering its 19th season, The Big, Bright Light Show is a holiday staple in Rochester. Renowned in Michigan and beyond, over 1 million visitors each year come to admire the dazzling light display that covers storefronts up and down Main Street.

“The Big, Bright Light Show has become part of the fabric of Rochester life, celebrating family, community and tradition in our town,” says Stuart Bikson, Mayor of the City of Rochester. “Downtown Rochester has become a destination for the holidays, and we are proud of our downtown.”

The Big, Bright Light Show kicks off each year with Lagniappe—a family-friendly celebration that marks the unofficial start of the holiday season in downtown Rochester. This year the festivities begin on November 25 at 6:00 pm with support from the Mayor and Channel 7. The event includes live musical performances, Meadow Brook Carolers

and fireworks. The lights officially shine starting at 7:00 pm.

“When we hit the switch on The Big, Bright Light Show at Lagniappe and “It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year” by Andy Williams starts to play, it’s almost like downtown is transformed into one of those towns you see in a Hallmark movie,” says Kristi. “The joy from the crowd, the smiles on faces, and the start of memories being made – there’s nothing quite like it.”

Local merchants stay open late for Lagniappe, offering customers “a little something extra” to show their appreciation for supporting them throughout the year.

“Lagniappe is a night for the community to enjoy the company of their loved ones and friends by celebrating the joy of the holiday season,” says Cecilia Viviano, Marketing & Product Development Manager at Viviano Flower Shop. Cecilia says they start decorating their store for the holidays and stocking the shelves with gifts, including fresh floral arrangements, in early November.

During Lagniappe, Viviano usually provides hot beverages for visitors to enjoy and warm up from the cold night. “I have fond memories of happy families coming into our store to warm up from the cold and appreciating the beauty and peace

found in our floral arrangements,” Cecilia says. Viviano has the honor of welcoming the crowd to Lagniappe this year.

Hosted by the DDA and presented by Fox Automotive, Lagniappe is a can’t-miss holiday event, and one Rochester residents keep coming back to year after year.

“I have two daughters, ages 2 and 4, and we look forward to making the light show part of our family holiday tradition,” says Rochester resident Erin Vedolich. “The Lagniappe celebration kicks off such a magical time in Rochester. Getting a little something extra from the merchants of downtown Rochester is so special and last year we loved the fireworks!”

Santa Claus also makes a special appearance at Lagniappe each year, and kids have the opportunity to share their wish lists with him from 7:15 to 9:00 pm. “My favorite part of Lagniappe is when Mrs. Claus and I make our way through the crowd to the Main Stage. It is so wonderful to see the children of all ages that have come downtown to see us year after year,” says Santa Claus. “We look forward to leading the crowd in our favorite Christmas carols before we light the town. Rochester is truly magical.”

“It is very cool that the city of Rochester puts so much effort into creating unique experiences for families around the holidays (and year-round). It is really a wonderful community, and I know our children will grow up with special memories of the light show,” says Erin.

There is something magical about 1 million plus glimmering lights taking over Main Street in downtown Rochester. This already quintessential town becomes

even more enchanted during The Big, Bright Light Show. “It is really fun to see people from all over coming into Rochester to see the lights,” says Erin. “You can feel the warm hospitality from the local businesses and community. Walking down Main Street with the carolers feels like you are in a Hallmark movie. It's a special experience and becomes something to look forward to each year.”

The Big, Bright Light Show runs

from November 25 through January 19 this year—lighting up the sky from 5:00 pm to midnight and transforming Rochester into a can’t-miss holiday destination. Most stores stay open until 9:00 pm Monday through Saturday to accommodate holiday shoppers and everyone coming to see the lights. “We hear from our businesses that 35-40% of their annual sales are during the weeks of The Big, Bright Light Show,” says Kristi.

Whether you are just driving through to admire the lights or spending an evening dining and shopping downtown, The Big, Bright Light Show is a great way to get into the holiday spirit. So put on a festive outfit, grab your friends and family and get ready to be dazzled by the lights, sights and sounds of the season. “The Big, Bright Light Show has become a Rochester tradition, and we plan on keeping this tradition into the future,” says Mayor Bikson.

Rosemary Pomegranate French 75

A delightful twist on a classic cocktail that brings warmth and cheer to every toast

The rosemary pomegranate French 75 is a festive reimagining of the classic cocktail, perfect for holiday celebrations. Named after a WWI artillery gun for its impressive “kick,” this modern twist incorporates sweet, tart, and earthy aromas, elevating the drink’s crisp, elegant bubbles to new heights.  This unique recipe was created by Erik, the Mixologist at Bitter Toms Distillery, a cozy yet vibrant spot for cocktail enthusiasts in Downtown Rochester.  This playful adaptation of a beloved recipe is one of Erik Underwood's favorite creations and a standout highlight on the Bitter Toms menu.

As the holiday season unfolds, there’s nothing quite like making a new seasonal cocktail crafted by a local maker and raising a glass of festive cheer to celebrate our community.

This year let’s indulge in a delightful holiday drink that embodies the spirit of togetherness. As we gather with our friends and family, let’s toast to the bonds we share, the memories we create and the local businesses that bring our community to life.  Here’s to a season filled with warmth, joy and connection.

RECIPE

Rosemary Pomegranate French 75

Created by Erik Underwood, Mixologist at Bitter Toms Distillery

• 1oz Bitter Tom's London Dry Gin

• .25oz Creme de Cassis

• .75oz Organic Pomegranate Juice

• .5oz Fresh lemon Juice

• .5oz Simple Syrup

• Spring Rosemary

• Sparkling Wine (Brut)

DIRECTIONS

Put rosemary and simple syrup in a mixing tin and muddle to release oils.

Add all other ingredients except sparkling wine and shake with ice.

Fine strain into a champagne flute and top with sparkling wine

Garnish with a lemon peel and a spring of fresh rosemary

CONFECTION

Elevate your holiday hot chocolate with a charcuterie experience

As winter settles in and the air chills, there’s nothing more comforting than a steaming cup of hot chocolate. Take it up a notch and indulge in a hot cocoa charcuterie board. Picture a delightful spread of various hot chocolate flavors, mix-ins, and toppings, inviting you to create a personalized, delicious mug of joy.

OLD-FASHIONED HOT COCOA

Ingredients

• ¼ cup 60% cacao chocolate morsels

• ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa

• 1/3 cup white granulated sugar

• 2 cups milk

• 2 cups half and half

• 1 pinch salt

• ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Directions

Heat all ingredients (except vanilla extract) in a 2-quart saucepan over medium-low heat until almost boiling. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.

CREATING THE PERFECT HOT COCOA CHARCUTERIE BOARD

Gone are the days of selecting only between marshmallows and whipped cream as toppings. With a hot cocoa charcuterie board, you can delve into a world of flavors, textures and spices that will make each sip an adventure.

Begin by selecting a variety of flavors and mix-ins, such as mini marshmallows, salted caramels, white chocolate morsels and peppermints. Pair your hot cocoa with delectable treats like cookies, gum drops, crème-filled wafer rolls or chocolate-covered espresso beans. Consider adding biscotti, chocolate-dipped spoons or chocolate-coated pretzels as well as whipped toppings and an assortment of sprinkles.
