Love is in the Air!

February is the month of love, and this issue of City Lifestyle is dedicated to celebrating the heart of our community: our local businesses. From charming boutiques and cozy cafes to family-owned restaurants and artisanal shops, these local gems bring character, warmth, and vibrancy to our town. They’re more than just places to shop or dine—they are the backbone of our community, run by neighbors, friends, and families who pour their hearts into what they do.

Shopping local is a simple yet powerful way to show love and appreciation for our community. When we choose to support local businesses, we help create jobs, strengthen the local economy, and foster a sense of connection that makes our town truly special. Each dollar spent at a local business stays within our community, fueling growth and ensuring that our neighborhoods thrive.

In this issue, we’re shining a spotlight on some incredible businesses and entrepreneurs who embody the spirit of local love. You’ll discover hidden treasures, meet inspiring individuals, and find plenty of reasons to shop, dine, and explore right here at home. Whether you’re looking for the perfect Valentine’s Day gift, planning a date night, or simply want to treat yourself, we’ve got you covered with ideas and inspiration.

This February, let’s all commit to showing a little extra love—to our local businesses, our neighbors, and ourselves. A kind word, a new customer, or even a recommendation to a friend can make a world of difference. Together, we can continue to cultivate a community that supports and uplifts one another.

Thank you for being part of our City Lifestyle family. We’re honored to share these stories with you and hope this issue inspires you to celebrate the beauty and strength of our local community.

With love and gratitude,

Are you on the association board for your subdivision? Do you have someone you would like to nominate for Student, Non-Profit or First Responder of the Month? Contact us for information on how you can be included in upcoming articles and share your events and ideas. We would love to partner with you to host our events in your neighborhood! Just give us a shout. We want to meet you.

A LOVE STORY ROOTED IN TEXAS MUSIC

LOCAL LOVE LOVING IN HARMONY

Mayor Trace Johannesen and his wife, Amy, first met in June 2006 at a Max Stalling concert at Love and War in Plano. Their shared love for live Texas music sparked an instant connection and laid the foundation for a lasting friendship. Over the next seven years, the two frequently crossed paths at local music venues, but it wasn’t until 2013 that they officially began dating. From that point on, it was clear to both of them that they were meant to be together.

Today, the couple has built a beautiful life on the north side of Rockwall, Texas, where they are raising their family of five children, whose ages range from elementary school through early adulthood. Amy pours her entrepreneurial energy into managing her EOS practice, while Trace leverages his skills as a business strategy consultant to help companies achieve their full potential.

Beyond their professional achievements, Trace and Amy are deeply committed to their community. They actively serve on local boards, organize annual fundraisers, and contribute to the vibrant culture of Rockwall. Even with their busy schedules, the couple remains passionate about Texas music and Real Texas Wine, both of which serve as meaningful reminders of their journey together.

Whenever Max Stalling performs nearby, Trace and Amy make it a point to attend, celebrating the music that first brought them together. Their love for Texas music has remained a constant thread in their lives, symbolizing their shared history and how far they’ve come as a couple.

Through all of life’s hustle and bustle, Trace and Amy continue to prioritize their passions, their family, and their commitment to each other, embodying the harmony of love, music, and community.

“Whenever

Max Stalling performs nearby, Trace and Amy make it a point to attend, celebrating the music that first brought them together.”

“Open communication remains the cornerstone of their success, in both business and love.”

Local LoveA True Sign of Love

From Bay Area Beginnings to Thriving Entrepreneurs

Some love stories span decades, weaving together moments of connection, separation, and growth. For one couple, Steven and Mark, their journey began in the Bay Area in September 2003. As two Taurus personalities, they share an undeniable bond while maintaining distinct individualism. Over the past 21 years, they’ve navigated life’s twists and turns, including a decade of living together and 6.5 years apart due to corporate careers and family obligations.

The pandemic brought them back under the same roof, this time in Rockwall, where they’ve not only reunited but also built their lives and businesses. As they prepare to celebrate nine years of marriage in June 2025, their entrepreneurial spirit thrives. Together, they operate TORO Hospitality, a venture combining expertise in travel and real estate under brands like The Traveling TORO and James Mark Hamilton, eXp Realty. Drawing from their luxury backgrounds and shared passion for fostering

connections, they’ve crafted a business that mirrors their dynamic relationship.

In December 2019, their partnership took on a new dimension with the adoption of Torito, a spirited mini Australian Shepherd. Torito, described as both independent and spoiled, quickly became the heart of their small family, bringing joy and balance to their busy lives.

Rockwall has proven to be more than just a place to live—it’s become their sanctuary. The thriving community offers them a backdrop for personal and professional growth, aligning perfectly with their vision for the future. While working together has its challenges, they view those moments as opportunities to strengthen their bond. Open communication remains the cornerstone of their success, in both business and love.

As they continue their journey side by side, this couple embodies dedication, and a commitment to building a life filled with love, adventure, and shared dreams. Rockwall isn’t just where they live; it’s where they thrive.

By taking the time to work through individual challenges, HBTX ensures that each customer receives thoughtful and personalized support. This flexibility is a hallmark of the bank’s customer-focused approach.

Stacey explains, “When other banks might say no, HomeBank takes pride in finding ways to say yes, helping local entrepreneurs turn dreams into realities with flexible small business loans and creative solutions.”

THERMOSTAT TUG-OF-WAR

Nothing Says ‘I Love You’ Like a Good Night’s Sleep

As the seasons change, so does the ongoing battle over the perfect sleeping temperature—a conflict that many couples are all too familiar with. For some, one person’s idea of a cozy retreat feels like the other’s personal sauna, leaving both parties frustrated and sleepless. Negotiating the thermostat can often feel as challenging as deciding what’s for dinner, with

“We’ve built strong relationships with our clients by focusing on solving problems rather than pushing unnecessary upgrades. Honesty has always been our first priority.”

the stakes being even higher when the quality of your sleep is on the line. How do you find the perfect balance when comfort zones seem to be at odds?

This is where No Sweat Experts, a family-owned air conditioning company, comes in. Specializing in providing tailored climate solutions, No Sweat Experts understands that keeping homes—and relationships—comfortably balanced requires a little more than just adjusting the thermostat. With services like smart thermostats and zoned heating and cooling systems, they’ve perfected the art of personalized climate control, allowing everyone in the household to sleep soundly at their ideal temperature.

Roy and Danielle Cook, the husband-and-wife team behind No Sweat Experts, have built their business by understanding that comfort goes beyond just temperature—it’s about trust, connection, and a mutual understanding of what makes a home

feel like home. Married for over five years, they’ve navigated their own challenges when it comes to balancing climate preferences in their household. Through this personal experience, they’ve come to recognize the importance of solutions that not only address the technical aspects but also nurture the relationships that depend on them.

“Nothing says ‘I love you’ like a good night’s sleep,” Roy says with a smile, though there’s truth beneath the humor. The Cooks’ mission is to provide honest, effective, and practical solutions that allow couples to peacefully coexist in their homes without sacrificing comfort.

“Trust is the cornerstone of our business,” Roy explains. “We’ve built our company by focusing on solving problems first and foremost, not by pushing unnecessary upgrades. Honesty is our top priority.” This commitment to transparency and integrity has

contributed to No Sweat Experts’ rapid growth, with the business experiencing a 20-30% annual increase, driven almost entirely by word-of-mouth referrals. Customers rave about the team’s reliability and dedication, earning them high marks and a stellar reputation in the industry.

Danielle, who transitioned from a teaching career to help run the business, is essential to its success. She handles the business’s networking, marketing, and day-to-day operations, bringing the organizational skills of a seasoned educator to the table. Roy jokes, “She’s the owner, and I’m the janitor. She keeps the wheels on this bus turning.”

While the Cooks excel at providing the best climate control for their customers, Roy also shares some expert tips to ensure that HVAC systems run efficiently year-round:

• Replace your “Number 1” filters annually and “Number 4” filters twice a year.

• Wash outdoor units twice a year to maintain efficiency.

• If your air conditioner runs non-stop in summer, don’t wait—schedule a check-up.

• For repair quotes over $300, always seek a second opinion.

As No Sweat Experts continues to grow, their mission remains steadfast: to offer honest, customized solutions that meet the unique needs of each home and relationship. With their help, couples don’t have to compromise on temperature—they can sleep soundly and keep their relationships intact, one thermostat adjustment at a time.

For more information or to schedule a service, visit nosweatexperts.com. After all, when it comes to a good night’s sleep, everyone deserves their happily ever after.

LOCAL ARTIST of the Month

LOCAL TEENAGER CORINNE MARIE MEYRAT

WINS BIG IN INTERNATIONAL TALENT CONTEST

In July 2024, 17-year-old Corinne Marie Meyrat won eight categories at the international iPOPi (International Presentation of Performers) Entertainment Industry Awards Night Gala. She placed first in singing, second runner-up in TV commercials, first runner-up in Head Shots, first runner-up in Self Tape, third runner-up in Actress of the Year, second runner-up in TV Beauty, first runner-up in Teen Fashion, and second runner-up in Teen Model of the Year. She also received a scholarship to the prestigious New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts. After receiving the awards, Corinne received 31 calls from talent agents. Next summer, she will go to New York, live in a dorm, and spend a month at the conservatory, where she will take part in an intensive acting program.

“I trust myself,” she says. “I have a vision, and I believe in the process.”

“My first memory of being on stage is when I was six years old,” Corinne says. “I’ve loved being on stage ever since.”

While many of Corinne’s friends prepare to head off to various colleges, Corinne dreams of becoming a professional entertainer. This is not just a daydream. Behind that dream is a lot of determination and hard work. There’s also considerable financial expense involved. One of the expenses includes a professional portfolio, with her photos taken by Shea Ann Photography in McKinney. Other expenses include fees for signing with agents. Currently, Corinne’s agents include Clutts in Dallas, MSGSMT (MGMT) in California, MMG Modeling in New York, and WHO in California.

A beautiful singing voice, natural beauty, excellent acting ability, and charisma do not guarantee success. But Corinne has another advantage: self-confidence.

“I trust myself,” she says. “I have a vision, and I believe in the process.”

Corinne also writes music and enjoys collaborating with her mother’s cousin in Austin, who writes and produces music.

Corinne sometimes finds herself living two lives. Recently, after spending two days in a recording studio, she rushed to school to attend her algebra class.

Independent by nature, Corinne works at a restaurant making pizza. Much of her time is spent fundraising. After playing the character Anna in Frozen for the Children’s Advocacy Center in a local parade, Roger Williamson Foundation Repair made a generous donation. She also reaches out to the community by attending meetings, where she sings and acts to raise additional funds to offset expenses.

One of the best things Corinne feels she has going for her is her loving family. Having been raised in a happy home—complete with two dogs, including an adorable King Charles Spaniel—has led to her keen sense of self-confidence and self-assurance.

This talented and beautiful young woman has everything going for her. It is obvious she is destined to be a major star.

ARTISAN MASONRY AND GRANITE
Bobby believes everyone has a gift.
“I love diving, and I love helping people.”

Inspired by his stepfather, Bobby Gladu earned his diver certification and started scuba diving at the age of 13. Over the years, he has traveled extensively, diving in remote and exotic parts of the world, including Thailand, Costa Rica, Honduras, and Florida. He has also experienced shark diving in the Florida Keys.

Bobby says it was his stepfather who also influenced him in choosing a career in the granite and masonry business. At the age of 20, he started his own company. Today, Bobby is the president of Artisan Masonry and Granite, which has been instrumental in constructing many local commercial buildings.

Bobby believes everyone has a gift. “I love diving, and I love helping people,” he says. “I try to live by the motto ‘Love thy neighbor.’ My goal is to give back to the community.”

Because of this, Bobby is currently serving as a Blue Tie Guy with the Children’s Advocacy Center and joined CERT (Community Emergency Response Team). He then created a nonprofit called North Texas Public Safety Divers with a 10-member dive team dedicated to water rescue and recovery. Members of the team come from all walks of life. Each member must be a PADI-certified rescue diver, pass a fitness test, and undergo regular checkups. All volunteers, the divers are fully trained and equipped.

“We are called to rescue people in lakes, ponds, and creeks,” Bobby says. “Our divers are prepared to work night or day, in cold and inclement weather. During each rescue, there is an on-site standby diver, fully suited up and prepared to act if one of us gets in trouble.”

When recovering a body, Bobby’s first concern is for the family, who sometimes waits anxiously on the shore. “Our goal is to give them closure,” he says. “Unfortunately, we are not always able to locate the body.”

Bobby says the water in Lake Ray Hubbard is deceiving. “It’s pitch black,” he says. “I’ve dived when the sun was shining brightly overhead, but 20 feet down, I could not see an inch in front of my face.”

“Lake Ray Hubbard can be extremely dangerous for swimmers and boaters alike,” he adds. “Because the lake is man-made, there are a lot of tree stubs, many of them beneath the surface. Offshore, one of the unseen dangers is getting tangled in fishing lines. This is why each diver carries both upper and lower body knives.”

Bobby cannot stress enough the importance of life vests. One of his biggest concerns is seeing people taking risks when they are not wearing them.

“One example is the two people who were water-skiing in Dallas recently,” Bobby adds. “Neither one could swim, and they were not wearing life vests. They drowned. On the other hand, not too long ago, a man in a boat ran into a tree stub. He suffered a back injury, and although the two children with him were thrown 10 feet into the air, they all survived because they were wearing life vests.”

Bobby is currently working with the city to install three convenient, easily accessible life jacket stations around Lake Ray Hubbard. Each stand will list water safety regulations and contain life jackets for both adults and children, which can be accessed by a code sent to a cellphone. Cook Children’s Hospital has agreed to donate the jackets. The group North Texas Public Safety Divers along with Leadership Rockwall 2025, “the wildest class ever”are working to help raise the necessary funds.

According to Bobby, the future looks promising with the prospect of obtaining underwater drones and sonar, which can detect shadows.

Meanwhile, Bobby continues to use his gift, which in turn is proving to be a valuable resource for people who love being on the water.

Good Human of the Month

Meet Jerry Cook

Local Rockwall realtor and resident Jerry Cook has found a unique way to connect his community with the rich history of Texas. Inspired by a nearly 100-yearold photograph taken during Texas’ Centennial celebration in 1936, Cook collaborated with Rockwall photographer Patti Faulhaber to recreate the scene in downtown Rockwall. The original image, featuring a gentleman in his 70s with a distinctive Centennial hat, bore an uncanny resemblance to Cook. Their research, which included examining the automobiles in the background and the significance of the hat’s white band, led to a creative project highlighting Rockwall’s historic charm. Dressed in period clothing from the 1930s, Cook has taken to the streets of downtown Rockwall, greeting locals and offering a living glimpse into the town’s past.

During the holidays, Cook’s historical portrayals delighted children and parents alike, giving them a taste of life in the 1830s. Looking ahead to April 2025, Cook plans to further explore and emulate the formal wear Texans donned to celebrate independence.

Jerry Cook’s passion for history and community spirit makes him a true Good Human, reminding us all of the importance of preserving and celebrating our shared heritage.

Building the Perfect Bouquet

Valentine’s Day can be celebrated in many ways. Some people choose to go out for dinner and a movie, others hire a private chef for a romantic meal at home, some buy chocolates and find a fun activity in town, and some couples go out of town for an exciting getaway! One Valentine’s Day staple is giving a bouquet of flowers to someone special. Flowers are the gift that say I love you and can be given to your spouse, children, and mom. As a child, my father always got me roses on Valentine’s Day until I met my husband and he took over the tradition. A bouquet of flowers can say many things as each flower has a different meaning. If you’re wanting to say something special to the ones you love this Valentine’s Day, take a look at our list of three popular flowers, what they mean, and what flowers to pair them with.

Roses

LOVE & ROMANCE

Roses are by far the most popular flower to give on Valentine’s Day. They are beautiful by themselves or you can add Baby’s Breath to enhance the bouquet. These two make a romantic bouquet and are the perfect flowers to give to someone special.

Lilies

PURITY & FERTILITY

Lilies come in a variety of colors and are eye-catching! For a softer looking bouquet, pair your lilies with carnations. These two combined are fun and heartwarming and are a great gift for anyone.

Tulips

PERFECT FOR DEEP LOVE

A bouquet of tulips will brighten any space! Adding some Ranunculus, also known as buttercup, will compliment the tulips wonderfully. These flowers have a refreshing look that will decorate any home beautifully in a crystal vase.

Portraits

There is always a reason to take new updated portraits. Whether its graduation photos, updated headshots for your resume, or even couples portraits or engagement photos, we can do it all!
