Love Local: Celebrate Community & Connection

This February

I don’t know about you, but this time of year always leaves me torn. On one hand, I find myself resisting the commercialization of yet another greeting card holiday; on the other, I can’t help but indulge in all the sweet excuses to embrace the season.

Should I plan a Valentine’s Day date out or enjoy a cozy night at home? Buy a card or simply speak a kind word? I usually land somewhere in between. I still remember my first Valentine’s Day with my husband: we ordered a heart-shaped pizza and watched About Time. Each of us will arrive at different answers based on our preferences and personalities, but what we share is the opportunity to make sure those around us know we love them. However you choose to celebrate, we hope the pages of this month’s magazine will inspire you to do just that as we highlight and celebrate all there is to love about our local community.

As we balance between the chill of February and the promise of spring, take a moment to come together with the people in your life—the ones in your home, on your street, in your neighborhood, and throughout your community.

“Love Local” doesn’t just mean supporting local businesses (though we hope you’ll do that too!). It also means cherishing what is near—especially those under your own roof. Grab some Pop’d Hearts from HomeGrown and gather around the fire for a family game night. Or pick up a bottle of wine from Tipsy Pig Wine & Spirits and some cheese from The Fresh Market for a cozy movie night in.

We’ve always believed that what we can accomplish together is far greater than what we can achieve alone. Month after month, we’re reminded of that through the many stories shared in these pages. Thank you for letting us be part of the life you’re building, whatever that may look like. Our hope is to inspire you to love it just a little more than you did before.

Happy February!

A Balloon-Filled TRIBUTE

Danielle Seay, the creative genius behind ViVi Bears Balloons, has turned her pain into a passion project—a story of resilience, strength, and inspiration. Through her balloon art, Danielle celebrates life’s moments, both big and small, with a creative vision that reflects her journey of healing and hope. On January 1st, she spread some extra joy in her community by organizing a special birthday celebration for a young boy named Jack, who shares a birthday on February 2, 2020, with Danielle’s miscarried baby, Taylor. It was a meaningful gesture that perfectly embodies the spirit of ViVi Bears Balloons: celebrating life’s moments, both big and small.

Founded in 2020, ViVi Bears Balloons blossomed when Danielle could no longer ignore the pull of her creative passion. Though her original path led her to dental school, she always found herself drawn to parties, party dresses, and Pinterest boards filled with DIY ideas. In February 2019, she crafted a balloon garland for her son’s 6th birthday—one that now makes her smile, recalling how “amateur” it looked at the time. But that simple creation sparked something within her, and soon she was making garlands for friends and their kids.

ViVi Bears Balloons Celebrates a Special Birthday with Heart

The turning point came on August 2, 2019, when Danielle experienced the heartbreaking loss of her baby, Taylor, at 13 weeks and six days. “His death showed me that life is too short to not pursue your dreams,” she reflects. Amid this devastating grief, seven months later, Danielle became pregnant with what she calls her “rainbow baby,” a symbol of hope and a promise from God that she had not been forgotten. It was then that the call to start her own business became undeniable, and she took a bold leap—launching ViVi Bears while pregnant during a pandemic, on the one-year anniversary of Taylor’s passing.

The name “ViVi Bears” holds deep personal meaning. It’s a combination of her children’s nicknames—Brody Bear and Vivi Cat—and a tribute to her baby Taylor, represented by the stuffed bear that symbolized her loss. The four balloons in the company logo represent her four children, a beautiful reminder of both the joy and heartache that have shaped her journey.

Danielle felt the need to honor his memory this year as her baby would’ve turned five. She posted on a local Facebook page, hoping to find a child who shared the same birthday, and that’s when she found Jack. Danielle and a group of local businesses came together to create a birthday party that would light up Jack’s special day—while also honoring her own heavenly baby.

Through this heartfelt gesture, Danielle is turning her loss into something beautiful, showcasing her unwavering ability to celebrate life’s moments, find light in the darkness, and create joy for others even in the face of pain.

A HEARTFELT MISSION IN NORTHWEST ARKANSAS

FOR THE LOVE

In the heart of Northwest Arkansas, there’s a nonprofit organization that’s making a big difference—For the Love. What started in 2020 as a simple act of kindness during the early days of the pandemic has since blossomed into a lifeline for hundreds of families.

“COMMUNITY

What makes this nonprofit so special is the way it brings people together. Every week, the food truck serves up meals to local residents, creating an atmosphere that’s more than just about filling stomachs—it’s about connecting people. For the Love intentionally creates a welcoming

IS THE HEART OF FOR THE LOVE— WHERE MEALS BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER.”

Founded by three friends— Meredith Chapuis, Jennifer Cristofaro and Melinda Williams—For the Love began as a small food initiative. The trio, who had spent countless hours running together and chatting about ways to give back, quickly realized the growing need for support in their neighborhoods. As many food pantries faced temporary closures, they knew they needed to act. Their first effort? Cooking a few lasagnas and delivering them to local families in need through connections at DHS and local schools.

Fast forward a few weeks, and For the Love had evolved into something much bigger. The founders, with no experience in running a food business, took the leap and bought a food truck. This decision was prompted by the need to serve food safely outdoors during the pandemic. It wasn’t long before the food truck became the iconic symbol of For the Love, offering not just meals, but a sense of community.

environment where neighbors from all walks of life can come together, share a meal and build relationships.

As the organization grew, so did its capacity to meet the needs of the community. By hiring a full-time chef, For the Love was able to scale its operation, serving up to 300 meals on a given night in Rogers alone. The team’s commitment to consistency is evident in their weekly meals, even during holidays like Christmas Eve, making certain that those in need always know where to turn.

And it’s not just about the meals. Volunteers are the backbone of For the Love. From corporate groups to church small groups to birthday parties, there are numerous opportunities for people to serve. Everyone is welcome, and the experience of giving back has as much impact on the volunteers as it does on the families they serve.

Partnerships with local businesses have helped For the Love thrive. Companies like Pepsi, Tyson, Hormel,

and McCormick contribute vital food supplies, making it possible to feed hundreds of neighbors each week. The nonprofit also partners with other local organizations to connect families with additional resources, such as housing and job opportunities.

As For the Love continues to grow, the organization is looking forward to expanding even further. Plans are in motion to open a new location in Fayetteville in 2025, continuing their mission to serve the community with compassion and dignity.

The heart of For the Love lies in its simple yet profound message: when we take the time to know our neighbors, it enriches everyone’s lives. Whether it’s sharing a meal at a food truck or volunteering with family and friends, the power of community is at the core of this organization’s work.

In a world that often feels disconnected, For the Love is a reminder that sometimes a small act of kindness can spark something truly special. The food might be free, but the love and connections shared are priceless.

Mary’s Painting started with a dream and door hangers. Now they celebrate 20 years of quality service and community impact.

Painting with Purpose

ARTICLE BY COLE REYNOLDS
PHOTOGRAPHY BY ISABELLA ALDRETE

In 2001, Mary Haynes started her commercial painting company, Mary’s Painting, with five hundred door hangers and a dream. She went around town passing out the door hangers and was able to drum up some business. From there, her dedication to quality work and commitment to fulfilling customers’ desires has set her business apart from others in the industry. “Mary and Robert weren’t big advertisers,” muses General Manager Ginger Chenoweth. “After those initial door hangers, all the business they received was from positive reviews and word-of-mouth.” Now, in the twenty years since its inception, Mary’s Painting has become a staple of the Rogers community, and even though Mary and Robert retired at the beginning of 2024, Ginger and the rest of the team continue on their legacy of quality work and customer service.

Ginger started with Mary’s Painting fifteen years ago and has seen the vision from the beginning. She started out working for Mary and Robert as an estimator for jobs and built her way up to her current position as the Rogers General Manager. In that time, the thing that Ginger feels she has valued most is the relationships she has built with customers. Mary’s Painting’s consistent approach to customer care has helped foster a loyal client base that values the trust and quality Ginger’s team provides. If you do right by your customers, they will do right by you. The team at Mary’s

“Our customers always have our back. Several times we’ve had former customers encourage prospective clients to come look at their houses to see the quality of our work.”

Painting lives by this mantra, and they are always eager and available to take calls from customers. They promise no automated messages or dial-in menus voiced by robots. If you call Mary’s Painting, a member of Mary’s Painting will answer, even in the middle of the night.

The company’s number one goal for every job is to leave the work site cleaner than they found it. Many employees have been with Mary’s Painting for years; they consider each other family. Even most of the subcontractors they work with are former employees, so their expertise and quality of work can be assured. After every job, Ginger likes to personally inspect every inch of the job site to ensure everything is up to the company’s pristine standards. “They call me Eagle Eyes,” says Ginger, “because my eyes are just naturally drawn to small imperfections.”

Now that their business is booming and work is coming in at a steady clip, the team has put more focus on giving back to the community that has supported them for so many years. One program that the team is very proud of is their “Paint It Forward” initiative. Paint It Forward is a program where, once a month, the team completes a project pro bono to serve a local non-profit or client in need. This is just one way in which they feel they can utilize their talents and expertise to serve the Northwest Arkansas communities. In terms of what the future holds, Mary’s Painting plans to maintain their strong presence in the Rogers community, continuing to service their clients in the only way they see fit: by staying true to the foundational principles that Mary and Robert instilled in the company from the beginning.

THE SCOTTSDALE LURE OF

The endless skies of blue are interrupted only by cacti rising majestically from the ground, arms reaching skyward, and palm trees, which are often adorned by lights that twinkle when the sun sets. There are vistas of open desert, rising mountains, and even the lush green of the locale’s many golf courses. And, of course, there are the vibrant shopping, dining, art, and event scenes, too.

Scottsdale is a city located in Metro Phoenix in Arizona, which as a whole is nicknamed “The Valley of the Sun” for its more than 330 days of sun each year—one of the reasons the area is a draw for visitors. With few rainy days, it’s easy to plan your daily activities without worry. Yes, though, the summer gets hot. But the rest of the year? Perfection.

Scottsdale is a mix of a resort destination, city, and suburbs, with more open desert the further north you venture. To the south is Downtown Scottsdale—also known as Old Town Scottsdale—which is a mix of old Southwestern charm

(including the legendary cowboy saloon, Rusty Spur Saloon); modern eateries from famed chefs; lots of shopping at small boutiques and specialty shops; the Arts District , which is filled with art galleries; and even tasting rooms from Arizona wineries located along the famed Scottsdale Wine Trail

Nearby is Scottsdale Fashion Square , one of the nation’s premier shopping destinations. While you’ll find many usual retailers there, there are also more than 40 luxury brands, including Christian Louboutin, Bottega Veneta, and Louis Vuitton.

Heading north are open-air shopping destinations Scottsdale Quarter and Kierland Commons , which sit across the street from each other. Take the afternoon or evening to stroll through, exploring the shops, restaurants, and activity destinations such as the indoor mini-golf destination Puttshack . What else is there to see and do? Plenty.

FROM RELAXATION TO SHOPPING TO GOLF TO SIGHTSEEING, THIS DESTINATION HAS IT ALL

PLAY

Like golf? There are more than 200 golf courses in the Scottsdale area. Whether you’re a pro or just starting out, there is a course for you. One of the most popular in the area is the TPC Scottsdale as it is the locale of the WM Phoenix Open, the most-attended golf tournament in the world.

For most of the year, Scottsdale boasts warm temperatures, making spending a day splashing in a pool a perfect choice. Many local resorts have pool areas that feature fun extras such as water slides, lazy rivers, and even a cooled sand beach. And even if you’re not an on-site guest, you can often purchase a day pass to be on-site through ResortPass.com.

Of course, there’s also plenty of outdoor recreation in Scottsdale. Pinnacle Peak in North Scottsdale is a popular mountain to hike (as is the iconic Camelback Mountain, which is located in nearby Phoenix), and the Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt is a park and trail system spread over 11 miles. Kids love McCormickStillman Railroad Park , which boasts a small-scale train that circles the park and plenty of play areas.

A destination filled with numerous attractions is A rizona Boardwalk , a center that includes Butterfly Wonderland , OdySea Aquarium , Ripley’s Believe It or Not! , Museum of Illusions , and more.

CULTURE

The beauty of Scottsdale’s Sonoran Desert led famed architect, Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), to build Taliesin West , his winter home and desert laboratory, in a mountainside in East Scottsdale. Today, there are daily tours of the UNESCO World Heritage site, and events are offered often.

However, Wright’s architecture isn’t the only art in the area. Beyond the Arts District in Downtown Scottsdale, there is public art all around the city, from sculptures to murals, so definitely keep your eyes open!

There are also museums such as Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West , a Smithsonian Affiliate, which showcases items from the Greater Western region, and the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art , affectionately known as SMoCA.

On Thursday evenings, there’s a free public ArtWalk in the Arts District, where galleries stay open later. Wander the streets and galleries, often against a backdrop of live music and even artist appearances.

NEARBY

While there’s so much to do, see, and experience in Scottsdale proper, there’s also much to see nearby. Make sure to experience the Musical Instrument Museum (affectionately known as the MIM), which is the world’s only global instrument museum. Desert Botanical Garden features an array of desert plants, and Phoenix Art Museum has an impressive collection of art. And, of course, the Phoenix Zoo is a perfect place for both kids and adults alike.
