Happy Holidays!

The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflect that best.

This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our city has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We’ve compiled a gift guide on page 38 to make your shopping easier and that also supports our local businesses. We also wanted to share what our area has to offer this holiday season for entertainment and ways to give back, check that out on page 54.

We have the second annual tradition for Roswell. A piece of Germany is here once again: the Christkindl Market at Bulloch Hall. Please go visit, enjoy, and take in all the holiday season has to offer you, your family and friends. Spread the joy and love this season.

While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one.  In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or who are alone.

My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other extending grace, empathy and love.

Happy Holidays!

Magic of

SIDEWAYS IS BACK!

h o l i d a y s

ARTICLE BY ROSWELL CITY LIFESTYLE STAFF

SIDEWAYS’ quirky take on an Alice-in-Wonderland turned Nutcracker story. Combining our professional-trained dancers with local children ages 7-17, the show tells a holiday story through ballroom, jazz and contemporary dance that is fun for the whole family!

You’ll follow Mrs. Claus down the Rabbit Hole, defeat the mean Grinch, and return home to your loving family (& only slightly evil sisters).  With this heart-warming story, you can forget your worries & relive your days as a child – when the only thing that mattered was looking at the beautiful twinkling lights, singing your favorite songs, & baking cookies with your family.  It’s the Magic of the Holidays & this year it’s coming to ROSWELL!

We transform the ballroom at Computer Museum Of America in Roswell into our own festive wonderland, with over 90 feet of stage, professional lighting, beautiful sets, and hundreds of costumes.  It's our annual tradition and this year marks the 17th year of the show.

Keeping Holidays Bright

Kelly and Peter Meer, of Meer Electric, have been pouring themselves into Roswell for over 40 years by serving customers for all their residential and commercial electrical needs. While growing their successful business, Peter also enjoyed serving as Captain at Station One at the Roswell Fire Department. Likewise, Kelly spent many years teaching children the rules of the road at Roswell's Safety Town. Staying active in the community is important to the family and they loved taking part in all that Roswell has to offer during the holiday season. Together, Kelly and Peter raised their daughters to appreciate this joyful time of year and the opportunities to celebrate.

"THE

ROSWELL CHRISTMAS TOUR

OF HOMES HAS ALWAYS BEEN A FUN EVENT FOR US."

HOW DO YOU LIKE TO SPEND TIME TOGETHER AS A FAMILY DURING THE HOLIDAYS?

"The Meer Family likes to go to the Christmas Eve services. When we lived in Roswell, we went to church at Roswell First Baptist for their Christmas Eve service. Then, we would celebrate with family and friends with a delicious Christmas Eve dinner."

ARE THERE ANY SPECIAL ROSWELL EVENTS YOUR FAMILY ENJOYS THIS FESTIVE TIME OF YEAR?

"The Roswell Christmas Tour of Homes has always been a fun event for us.  When our daughters were growing up in Roswell, we always visited Santa Dan at the North Point Mall as well as Santa at one of the fire stations in Roswell."

WAS THERE A TIME WHEN YOUR FAMILY TOOK A MEMORABLE HOLIDAY TRIP TO A FUN-FILLED HOLIDAY LOCALE?

"In 2007, our family took a trip to Disney World in Orlando, Florida. We had a great time visiting the parks that were decorated for Christmas. When our daughters were growing up we would also visit the Christmas lights at Lake Lanier Islands."

ARE THERE ANY HOLIDAY EVENTS OR TRADITIONS THAT MEER ELECTRIC SHARES WITH THE COMMUNITY THIS TIME OF YEAR?

Meer Electric has been a part of the Roswell and Alpharetta Christmas tree lighting for the last 30 years. We provide power to these areas to allow for the Christmas tree and other decorations in the area to be lit during the month of December. We also make the snow at the tree lighting event in Alpharetta."

ROSWELL WOMAN'S CLUB IMPACTING OUR COMMUNITY THROUGH GIVING CONTRIBUTIONS AND FUN EVENTS

Roswell Woman's Club continues to shine in its nonprofit service as an all volunteer organization whose common interest is to raise money locally and this year was no exception. RWC raised in excess of $186,000 in 2024 for educational scholarships, grants, human services, cultural arts, historical preservations and urban improvement in all of North Fulton. Our dedicated membership accomplishes this through hands-on involvement, volunteerism in the community and monetary contributions through fundraising. The vision is to cultivate friendships, foster personal growth and enrich the lives of others.

The history of the club is quite impressive. In 1948 a group of thirty women organized the Roswell Women's Club. It was incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 1979 and currently averages 200 members who volunteer thousands of their own time and hours annually.

The three annual large fundraisers the Roswell Women's Club promote are the Spring Home and Garden Tour, Sip and Stroll at Boo Y'all, and the Boo Y'all scarecrows event. 450 tickets were sold this year with friends perusing the shops and restaurants and voting on their favorites of the 85 Scarecrows sprinkled along our charming Canton Street. We look forward to distributing funds raised to our worthy community members at our Annual Grant and Scholarship Awards night in May.

There are lots of ways to contribute and give back and be a part of this and help. You can become a participating merchant if you are a business owner. You can donate, volunteer, become a sponsor or a company match partner.

The communities of Holbrook Life give residents an opportunity to make great friends, experience world-class, culinary delights and engage in fun-filled activities that enrich lives and create memories. With four locations in the metro-Atlanta area, including Acworth, Decatur, Woodstock and Sugar Hill this connected community seeks to welcome, inspire and entertain its residents, creating a well-lived and satisfying life.  Imagine tables brimming with the likes of smoked salmon crostinis, cranberry-orange scones and dark chocolate Madeleines. The air is filled with sweet scents and you fade away in nostalgia as you listen to Nat King Cole’s voice belt out another holiday tune. This is the scene of the 2nd Annual Christmas High Tea at Holbrook Communities and is quickly becoming one of Metro Atlanta’s most coveted events.

CONTINUED >

Tosha Holbrook, Chief Marketing Officer at Holbrook Life, became inspired by visiting various high teas with her daughter.  Ms. Holbrook remarks, “I have the best memories with my daughter going to different High Teas in and around the greater Atlanta area.

Ms. Holbrook wanted to ensure this event would be a great way for residents to celebrate the festivities of the season. “What a great event to host in our communities where many generations can dine together. In 2023, we launched our Christmas High Teas at our Acworth, Decatur and Woodstock locations. This initially was open to residents and family members, and Holbrook Club members,” says Ms. Holbrook.

To prepare for such an event, Ms. Holbrook and the community’s chefs visited the St. Regis to experience how an elegant high tea might be presented. “We all had a great discussion on what we liked and what we would do differently, says Ms. Holbrook.

With an offering of both savory and sweet bites along with five organic loose-leaf teas, the chef’s team has thought of everything. Ms. Holbrook reveals,  “Each person receives their own teapot with as much tea as he/she would like.”

To summarize it all up, these are great events to host in Holbrook Life communities where many generations can dine together with elegance and style.

FROM FAMILY TRADITION TO INTERIOR DESIGN PASSION

Getting to know local Roswell designer, Angie Thompson and what influences her

Angie L. Thompson’s journey into interior design began well before she realized it. Her father and mother had full time middle jobs. However, they had dreams as well. They were entrepreneurs. During the 80s, Angie observed her mom as a freelance salesperson for Home Interiors, Inc., a business dedicated to home décor modeled similar to Tupperware and Mary Kay. This side career was filled with shopping and decorating.

“As the youngest child, I tagged along as her assistant," Angie said. “I created boards and displays, helped with orders, inventory and shipping during my middle school and part of my high school years.”

Angie's fun and festive holiday design

Despite her early interest, interior design wasn’t an immediate career path for Angie. She went to college for “proper career major”… math. She earned an Applied Mathematics degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. To support herself through school, Angie worked at Sherwin Williams, where she learned color theory first hand. She found herself drawn to wall coverings and window treatments. “It was one of the few places you could get free design advice in a small college town back then,” she recalled.

After graduation, Angie moved to Atlanta to continue her education and pursue her dream of becoming an interior designer. That was the weekend after the 1996 Olympics. While studying Interior Design at American Intercontinental University and Brenau University, She continued working at Sherwin Williams’ Buckhead location. This role opened doors in the interior design community and introduced her to Atlanta’s vibrant design world.

During her years of study, Angie met Brannigan Thompson at UNC Chapel Hill and they later married. With a new career and budding family, Angie worked at the Lenox Mall and later at a well known and respected high end design firm, Pineapple House Interior Design. Over a number of years, Angie honed her craft while working on award winning projects. In 2003, Angie Thompson won 2 ASID awards. During subsequent years of work, travel and designing on her own, Angie revisited an old dream: a boutique in a brick- in- mortar. A real mom and pop shop where other designers and homeowners could shop from "her unique eye" in buying.

Angie’s approach to design is deeply influenced by her love of fashion. “Interior design and fashion go hand in hand,” she shared. “They are rooted from the base and similar in nature, but express themselves differently. An expertise in one field will surely manifest a natural knack in the other field.”

For Angie, every interior design project is a fresh start, a new opportunity to create something entirely unique. “It’s a blank slate,” she explained. “Even with having similar elements, the creative process and outcome are different because the client or project is different. No two interiors will ever be alike. That’s the magic and the fun!”

When it comes to inspiration, Angie finds it close to home and in iconic publications. Angie also grew up captivated by design experts and Saturday morning shows like “Style with Else Klensch” and “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous”. She would spend hours cutting out images from magazines CONTINUED >

Colorful celebrations add flare

like Vogue, Veranda, and Elle, pasting them on the back of her bedroom door. “That was my mood board before it even had a name!” she laughed.

For Interior design, her top tip? Hire a professional! As someone who lives and breathes design, Angie understands the challenges of decorating for the season. So she encourages people to trust their instincts. “Go with your gut,” the designer advised. “Have fun with texture, lighting, and color combinations. Add a nod to your traditions and bit of flare with a new annual theme. Research Pinterest, social media or your favorite magazine. Create a mood board and take a picture of it so you always have it with you while you shop. And remember, always measure your space. The quickest way to make a mistake is to purchase something that is out of scale.”

Angie is a 20 year resident of Roswell, GA. Her children Brandon and Brooke both attended schools throughout Roswell. Her husband, Brannigan, is known as a favorite “Party Parent” in Roswell Dance Theater’s “The Nutcracker” and he supports her in the design company. Angie has served on numerous committees for the community, church and school. Throughout that time, her love for interiors and fashion has never faded…it now shines in the unique designs she brings to her clients’ homes and her boutique. Angie’s high end design services at ATLdesigns, LLC are as versatile as her clients’ needs. She offers assistance for projects of various scales, from full construction and renovation to comprehensive decorating services.

With a passion rooted in family tradition and a career built on an appreciation for both art and mathematics, Angie L.Thompson brings a unique touch to Atlanta’s interior design world. As she continues to shape spaces that inspire and welcome, her story reminds us that the best designs are those that reflect who we are—especially during the holiday season.

“Your house is your home,” she emphasized. “You live there— make it your own.”

TO INCLUSIVITY... AND BEYOND!

Brewable Superheroes Fundraiser Brunch

Not all heroes wear capes—some wear aprons. Brewable, a local nonprofit café that employs adults with disabilities, hosted its 4th Annual Superheroes Fundraiser at the Computer Museum of America.

The employees, affectionately called “Brewistas,” served coffee and mingled with guests, embodying the café’s spirit of inclusivity. Live and silent auctions, followed by a paddle raise, encouraged generous participation, helping Brewable raise $87,000 to fuel its mission.

A highlight of the event was an emotional appeal video that demonstrated Brewable’s far-reaching impact and showcased the Brewistas in action. Supporting Brewable does more than keep the doors open and the lights on, according to Board President Nicky Rudd.

“You’re investing in a legacy of inclusivity,” Rudd said. “Our Brewistas take home more than just a paycheck—they take home a purpose. Customers leave with a new mindset, and kids who come for cake pops learn to see beyond differences.”

Brewable will continue its heroic mission to close the disability employment gap—one cup at a time.

THESE GUYS MAKE GIVING A GIFT A LOT MORE FUN

Local Inventors are Gifting Fun

ZipString is an innovative new toy that brings hours of entertainment to kids and adults alike.

‘Tis the season for toy shopping. Every parent wants to find their child that one special gift that produces a sense of fun and wonder, something unique their child hasn’t experienced. That can be challenging today when many kids are just focused on getting the newest video game or smartphone.

Toy inventors Austin Hilliam and Stephen Fazio of Johns Creek may have hit upon something, however, that can bring back “The Smile of Wonderment” some kids are missing.

ZipString is an innovative new toy that brings hours of entertainment to kids and adults alike. At first glance, the toy seems to operate on pure magic, but really it’s all pure science.

In 2021, while working on a robotics competition at Georgia Tech, Fazio was challenged to create a small circuit board that could do anything, as long as it cost under $50. His design was used as a string launcher, a fun physics experiment featured on YouTube. He successfully designed a hand-held string launcher and won the competition, but was unsure what else he could do with it.

When Fazio and Hilliam met later through church, they spent hours discussing how to turn the string launcher into something more. It took the pair only twelve days to create a bare-bones prototype string launcher toy, the original ZipString.

Hilliam and his father advised Fazio not to share the idea with anyone, since they saw the potential for a new product. The excitement was too much, though. “He ended up posting it on the internet,” Hilliam retells with a laugh. “And had twenty million TikTok views in four hours.”

The immediate response from thousands of social media viewers was, “Where can I buy one?”

“So, in the video description I added, ‘Arriving soon on Kickstarter’,” Fazio explains since he didn’t want to disappoint thousands of interested potential customers.

Soon YouTube sensations Dude Perfect asked to take a prototype on a national tour, social media influencers wanted to feature the toy, and best of all, pre-orders were being placed from kids and parents who wanted their own ZipString.

Hilliam recalls, “We wound up building the first 4,000 by hand in my parent’s basement.”

“We are both very hands-on, so we just thought, hey, we can probably do this ourselves,” Fazio explains. And that’s exactly what they did.

After the toy went viral, the two visited Hilliam’s engineering teacher at Johns Creek High School, Dr. Stephen Sweigart, who had been influential in Austin’s early interest in electronics. It was Dr. Sweigart who suggested the pair should apply to Shark Tank where they made an appearance in 2022.

Today, the successful ZipString business is still headquartered in Johns Creek and the company has just shipped out its millionth unit, with more new products and fun on the horizon.

When asked why parents should buy this toy, and what makes it so special, they both agree this is one of the few toys that instantly brings a “Smile of Wonderment” to kids of any age.

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”

As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.

Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.

One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.

Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.

These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just

about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”

We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.

To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.

The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.com
