Hello FebruaryWE love you!

I don’t know about you, but this time of year I am always torn. I find myself torn between resisting the commercialization of another greeting card holiday and indulging in all the sweet excuses to enjoy the season.

To do a Valentine’s Day date out or enjoy a cozy night at home? To buy a card or just say a kind word?  I usually land somewhere a little in between. We’ll each arrive at different answers based on our preferences and personalities, but what we hold in common is an opportunity to make sure those around us know we love them. And regardless of how you choose to celebrate, we hope the pages of this month’s magazine will help you do just that as we celebrate and highlight what’s to love in and around our local community from food, drinks style, and innovations in business in Roswell.

With the excitement of February, we hope you’ll be inspired to take a moment to come together with the people in your life. The ones in your home and on your street.

“Love local” means your local businesses, those in your community - but it also means loving what is near. Those under your own roof included. So grab a coffee at Cafe Amico or Crazy Love and head home for a game night around the fire with the family. Or snag a bottle of wine from Deep Roots Tasting and Wine Market and some yummy chocolate delights from Cao Chocolates and indulge on a movie night in.

We’ve always believed what we can do together is so much more than what we can do apart. And we continue to see that demonstrated through the many stories told in these pages month after month. Please continue to support our local businesses that help to bring this publication to life each month.

Thanks for letting us be a part of the life you’re building, whatever that may look like.

Our hope is that we inspire you to love it just a bit more than you did before.

Happy February!

Roswell Finalizes Purchase of New Public Safety Headquarters

City of Roswell secured the site for both Roswell’s Police and Fire Department who have been steadily outgrowing their current administration office spaces.

“Public safety is vital in Roswell, especially as our city grows. In 2022, voters supported bond referendum to include this. Since then, we have been working to identify the ideal location for centrally located headquarters, and we’re excited to deliver on that promise by closing on this site,” said Mayor Kurt Wilson.

THE MAKING OF HERSHEY'S

This Valentine's Day, loved ones across the country will receive boxes of smooth, silky confections donning names like Cadbury, Godiva, Ghiradelli, Ferrero, Lindt and the like. But only one can take credit for America's chocolate obsession, paving the way for dozens more to earn their rightful place on grocery store shelves in centuries to come. That name is Hershey.

But chocolatier Milton Hershey is responsible for more than the rise of delicious milk chocolate. His chocolate-making machinery introduced new technology that made mass-producing food easier, the live-and-work community that housed his factory and empire became what is now the town of Hershey, Pennsylvania, and from that town, he and his wife Catherine fostered the humble beginnings of the Milton Hershey School, a living legacy even greater than chocolate.

The Milton Hershey School aimed to help children with disadvantaged backgrounds get ahead in life. Its lessons were designed to instill the qualities that made Milton such a great businessman and entrepreneur into students. Traits like imagination, perception, future-oriented thinking, and being daring and having commitment are emphasized in the school's curriculum.

In 1918, Milton Hershey humbly and silently gifted his entire fortune, 500,000 shares valued at $60 million, in a trust to benefit the school. It wasn't until five years later that the public learned of this wildly generous act.

“Well, I have no children — that is, no heirs,” he was famously quoted in 1923. “So I decided to make the orphan boys of the United States my heirs.”

The City of Roswell, Roswell Cultural Arts and Roswell Roots Committee, proudly present an impressive array of 24 events celebrating Black experience in art, education, history, cultural, and performance. Now in its 24th year, Roswell Roots 2025 is January 30th through February 23rd.

This month long festival brings our diverse community together and is poised to provide an exceptional experience for attendees of all ages. Honoring Black History Month is very important to Roswell and is a powerful celebration of resilience, achievement and the profound contributions made to history.

“This is my 2nd year of being part of the Roswell Roots committee, I've never worked in this aspect with the art community before, but I was encouraged to try something new and be a part of something great. I will have to say, this has been a great experience for me. The committee has some very committed members and very talented artists as well. I like this year; we are doing more to engage the children by adding more shows for their education and their entertainment. The Roswell Roots Committee helps me feel like I have a place in the community and sharing my culture matters. I like art exhibits, especially the visual arts that really showcase the beautiful mind of the artist and their canvas. I also like music and movies, so I'm looking forward to the movie screening of Mo’ Better Blues and the discussion to follow, as well and American Idol winner and platinum artist Ruben Studdard live on stage at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center. I'm looking forward to being at every event - Thelma Gabb

“In view of the current times, Black Americans need to be included in the conversation of what makes this country great. Division creates diversion and our focus should be on continuing to bring awareness to the America that should be inclusive. All of us have contributed something positive to the greatness of this country. The Roswell Roots Festival is a celebration of the consciousness, curiosity, creativity and the contributions of our community. I believe the festival is successful in presenting what makes this country great.” – Sharon Crumley

LIVE, LOVE MORE WITH ONE LESS CHORE AT TUMBLE & DRY.

Tumble & Dry

Many modern luxuries, from grocery delivery to rideshare, started as necessities that someone, somewhere, dared to innovate. Laundry service, however, was long overdue for a spin—until Tumble & Dry turned the tide.

Andrew Lucas first dreamed of owning a laundromat as a source of passive income to spend more time with his wife, Frances, and their son, Drew, who is on the autism spectrum, and to create an inclusive workplace where Drew could work alongside them in the future.

Fifteen years later, a devastating twist of fate pushed Andrew to make that dream a reality.

In 2021, the Lucases purchased their first laundromat in Roswell. While navigating the economic uncertainty of the pandemic as small business owners, they faced an even greater challenge as a family: Andrew’s ongoing battle with COVID, marked by multi-organ damage, chronic health issues, and persistent exhaustion.

As they leaned on each other more than ever, Andrew and Frances realized the true value of what they could offer customers: more time with loved ones—the very reason they started a family business in the first place. This clarity inspired them to rebrand, renovate, and expand to a second location in Acworth.

Tumble & Dry, born from the founders' sheer grit and determination to spend more time with each other, now helps families across Roswell, East Cobb, and Woodstock do the same.

“As a family first and business second, we understand raising children and managing a household through thick and thin takes a village,” said Lucas. “We’re here to be part of that support system.”

At Tumble & Dry, laundry isn’t a chore—it’s a joyful, often hands-free experience. With convenient drop-off and delivery options, quick turnarounds, and an easyto-use mobile app, customers save time and gain the freedom to enjoy richer, more fulfilling lives.

At the bottom of every "bottomless" laundry pile are endless possibilities—more breakfasts in bed, more

pillow fights, more dinner table conversations, and more forced-family-fun nights.

“You can’t put a price on time,” said Lucas. “Our mission has always been to give people theirs back, so they can focus on what, and more importantly who, matters most.”

Impactful yet unobtrusive, Tumble & Dry functions like an extension of the home—seamlessly fitting into the lives of busy customers who appreciate a few extra hours each week.

“We set out to reimagine what a laundromat could be,” said Lucas, “to not just meet a need, but to elevate the experience entirely.”

Walking through the doors is like stepping into a retreat. Impeccably clean and thoughtfully designed, the Tumble & Dry atmosphere feels worlds apart from the gritty fluorescence of laundromats frozen in time and untouched by care.

Tumble & Dry goes to great lengths to ensure customers feel cared for—whether doing their own laundry in-store, dropping off their T&D bag, or scheduling a delivery with their phone in hand and a child on their hip.

The Lucases extend that same level of care to their team, fostering an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and supported. As the business grows, they plan to expand their hiring program to include their son, Drew, and more adults with disabilities.

“When we ask how you’re doing, we truly care about the answer,” said Lucas. “We greet our regulars by name and know more than just their favorite detergent or dryer setting—we know their families, their jobs, their stories. Laundry may bring us together, but it’s the relationships that matter.”

CELEBRATE LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP

Share a unique chocolate and wine experience with your Valentine this month from Deep Roots!

Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and what better way to celebrate love and friendship than with a decadent pairing of delicious wines and exquisite chocolates?  Chocolate and wine pairing can be tricky. But when done correctly, you can create a delightful sensory experience! Here are some general rules to keep in mind:

• Match Intensity: Lighter chocolates pair well with lighter wines (e.g., milk chocolate with sparkling wine or a light Sauvignon Blanc).   Darker chocolates pair better with fuller-bodied wines (e.g., Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Port).

• Sweetness: Sweet wines often complement sweeter chocolates. Dry wines can work well with bittersweet or dark chocolate. Flavor Profiles: Match complementary flavors. For example, fruity chocolates pair well with fruity wines, while nutty chocolates can be enhanced by wines with nutty undertones.   Consider contrasting flavors. The acidity in some wines can cut through the richness of the chocolate

• Experimentation is key! The best way to find the perfect pairing is to try different combinations and see what you enjoy most. And remember, these are just general guidelines. There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to wine and chocolate pairings. Have fun experimenting and discovering your own favorite combinations!

Recently, the Deep Roots team had a mouthwatering experience, exploring the unique flavors of three different chocolate creations from Cao Chocolates. Founded by visionary chocolatier Ricardo Trillos, Cao Chocolates is a celebration of pure indulgence. Using only the finest cacao beans, Ricardo crafts exquisite chocolates with a focus on quality and flavor.  It was a “tough job” finding the perfect wine pairings for each Cao Chocolate, but what an exciting challenge! We carefully considered traditional pairings, but also embraced unexpected discoveries. The results are truly harmonious – each wine complements the chocolate's unique flavors, creating a delightful and unforgettable experience. And as you can see, we selected some pairings that did not follow the rules!

• Pink splashed dark chocolate salted caramel & Love Oregon Rosé: The crisp acidity of this Rosé beautifully cut through the sweetness of the caramel and balanced the saltiness of the chocolate, while the delicate floral notes of the rosé complemented the subtle fruitiness of the pink salt.

• Milk chocolate with coconut cream rum filling & Flowers

Chardonnay: The creamy texture of the chocolate and the subtle coconut notes found a perfect match in the buttery richness of the Chardonnay. The wine's crisp acidity provided a refreshing counterpoint to the sweetness of the filling.

• Milk chocolate and dark chocolate ganache infused with coffee liqueur & Love You Bunches Carbonic Sangiovese:  The vibrant fruit flavors and lively acidity of the Sangiovese complemented the bittersweet notes of the dark chocolate and the coffee liqueur. The carbonic maceration added a playful effervescence that enlivened the palate.

Still unsure about sharing a wine & chocolate tasting experience with your Valentine? Don’t worry, you can ditch the guesswork and let the Deep Roots team do the work! We’re here to help make you a Valentine's Day hero!

LOVE THEM WITH A PLANT

PERFECT PLANTS FOR PRESENTS AND GIFT GIVING

Plants make the best gifts! They are long-lasting, healthful, thoughtful presents for housewarmings, dinner parties, and birthdays.

No one has plant allergies (you can’t say that about foods). No one has given up plants because they are trying to cut calories (you can’t say that about chocolates). Plants are just beautiful and joyous. Read here about four plants that can make great gifts for those you love.

FOR A HOUSE-WARMING GIFT

FOR YOUR BUSY FRIEND

Mini succulents in colorful containers make excellent gifts. They don’t require wrapping at all. Just show up with one and you will make a big impression. Succulents can live longer on neglect. Forget to water and they take it in stride. Make sure your recipient knows they require full sunlight.

Dracaena is a group of plants that sport a diverse leafy look. Corn plants are super easy to grow, great for a new homeowner or first-time plant parent. Lucky bamboo is also a member of the dracaena family. This unique plant adds bold notes to indoor decor with its intricately arranged stems. It is slow-growing and easy to care for in low, medium light. Or try ‘Anita’ dracaena. This variety has narrower leaves. It grows as a small tree and is beautiful on tabletops.

FOR A THANK-YOU GIFT

FOR NEW PARENTS

Peace lilies offers green glossy leaves topped with beautiful white flowers. This popular houseplant fits in every style of interior decor. Big plants look great on the floor; smaller versions are ideal for tabletops or stands. New parents have their hands full with a baby, so make your gift self-sufficient as possible. Get a peace lily in a Wick & Grow® pot and it's self-watering!

Also called snake plant, sansevieria is a lovely way to deliver your thanks in plant form. This easy-care plant offers stiff spiky leaves that are green and white, or green and yellow. Leaves can be short or several feet tall depending on the variety. Snake plants accent any type of home decor. They are also ideal for pet owners, with their stiff leaves and are not munch worthy at all.

THE NIGHTMARE TURNS DREAM:

CODY RHODES ON WRESTLING, ROSWELL & BUILDING CHAMPIONS OF TOMORROW

ARTICLE BY TRAN BU | PHOTOGRAPHY BY GINA HOFFMAN OF VISION PR

Cody Rhodes, known to fans worldwide as “The American Nightmare,” is living his dream—or perhaps rewriting it. Born and raised in East Cobb, the Undisputed WWE Champion has carved his own path in professional wrestling while honoring the legacy of his father, the legendary WWE Hall of Famer “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes. Cody’s journey from wrestling royalty to WWE Champion is a story of grit, determination, and reinvention.

A LEGACY BUILT IN THE RING

Cody made his WWE debut in 2007 and quickly established himself as a star, capturing multiple WWE Tag Team and Intercontinental Championships. In 2016, he craved more than what WWE had to offer at the time. “I no longer felt challenged,” he admitted. “I needed to bet on myself and see what else was out there.”

That leap of faith led Cody to the independent wrestling scene. He won NWA World's Heavyweight Championship. He also became a founding member and an EVP at All Elite Wrestling (AEW). His work outside WWE not only elevated his career, but reshaped the industry. Still, home was calling.

Cody’s 2022 return to WWE at WrestleMania 38 was nothing short of electric. Since then, he’s headlined WrestleMania three

times and achieved his lifelong dream—winning the Undisputed WWE Championship. “When I was eight years old, I saw a photo of my father holding the championship belt over his head, only to find he never officially won it. It became my goal to win,” Cody reflected. “Handing that title to my mother in the ring at WrestleMania 40—nothing can beat that moment.”

BUILDING CHAMPIONS AT THE NIGHTMARE FACTORY

When Cody isn’t making history inside the ring, he’s helping others build their own legacies. In 2020, he co-founded The Nightmare Factory, a state-of-the-art wrestling training facility in the Atlanta area. “I understand the challenges of breaking into sports entertainment” Cody explained. “I wanted to provide opportunities, mentorship, and a structured path for the next generation of wrestlers to thrive.”

The school combines in-ring technique, promo skills, character development and the psychological aspects of wrestling to create well-rounded performers. Recently, The Nightmare Factory became part of WWE’s ID Program, focused on identifying and cultivating future stars. Cody’s advice to aspiring wrestlers: CONTINUED

Family fun at Disney
Brandi and Cody celebrate in the ring upon victory

“There’s no rush. Take your time to learn and hone in on your craft. Find a great wrestling school. Always have your ears, eyes and mind open.”

ROOTED IN ROSWELL

Though his career has taken him around the globe, Cody’s heart remains in the Peach State. “I’m a Georgia boy,” he said proudly.

“I went to Lassiter High School in Marietta, and this will always be home.” Cody and his wife, Brandi, chose to settle in Roswell, surrounded by his mom, sister, brother-in-law, niece and nephew. He also picked the city for its thriving community.

“I love Canton Street,” he shared. “It’s full of great restaurants and businesses. Brandi’s yoga and pilates studio, Naked Mind Yoga + Pilates, is right at the end of the street.”

Brandi’s studio is an inclusive space that caters to people in all stages of their fitness journeys. “I’m so proud of her. She's a hands-on instructor and has assembled a team of top-notch teachers offering Naked Mind's clients a variety of class options,” added Cody. “ The studio also has childcare to make it easier for busy parents to prioritize their wellness.”

THE POWER OF PARTNERSHIP

Whether in the ring or at home, Cody values teamwork. “The Nightmare Family isn’t just a wrestling faction—it’s real life,” he explained. “At WWE, I see myself as the quarterback, and I’ve built a loyal team around me.”

That same sense of partnership extends to his marriage. “Brandi has always stood beside me—or behind me when I needed a push,” he said. Their support for one another fuels their success, both professionally and personally.

For date nights, the couple enjoys local favorites like Table & Main and Monkey 68, followed by a round at Top Golf.

CHASING DREAMS AND INSPIRING OTHERS

Cody Rhodes’ story is a testament to resilience, passion, and the pursuit of greatness. From honoring his father’s legacy to blazing his own trail, he’s proven that dreams—even American Nightmares—can come true.

And as he continues to inspire fans worldwide, Cody remains committed to giving back, mentoring future stars, and celebrating life’s victories—both in and out of the ring.

A person can be eating the right foods and exercising regularly, but if they are hormonally unbalanced, most likely they will not achieve their desired results.

How we feel is affected by hormonal imbalances, issues with our gut & digestion, liver function problems, our cortisol levels and insulin resistance, all effect how we feel and function. These are culprits of old age.

The solution is to be hormonally balanced taking out of the equation “for your age”.

We want you to have hormonal levels of a healthy young adult. If we get you feeling younger, you will start moving younger. When you start moving younger you will start looking younger. That coupled with guidance on nutrition and exercise will lead to a longer happier healthier life.

Loving Life as Marietta's own COUNTRY MUSIC STAR

ARTICLE BY SIDNEY KATE LEWIS Stream Ava Connell’s fiery new single “It’ll Buff” for your next jam session

When she finally managed to take a break between shows and recording, I had the pleasure of chatting with Ava Connell, the 19-year-old from Marietta who is taking the country music industry by storm.

Despite not having first taken the stage at Eddie’s Attic in Atlanta until she was fourteen, it was nine years prior when her dreams first formed, and she knew what she wanted to be when she grew up. Having grown up watching Victorious and similar shows, videos still reside on her mom’s camcorder of a five-yearold Ava dressed to the nines and singing her heart out. It was then and there that her ambition was realized. While she’s still singing her heart out, she now steps on stage after stage, playing over 100 shows a year at venues across the South, including the Coca-Cola Roxy and Whiskey Jam, performing her own songs.

Drawing inspiration from many, including queen Avril Lavigne (whose song “I’m With You” is her go-to serenade for her shower head), Ava specializes in writing lyrics with a type of beauty, grace, and wisdom only a teenager can possess. That’s why she chose country music. “One of my friends told me, ‘The definition of country music is telling a story,’” Ava said. “I got into music because I love to write, and country music is a more freeform way of writing.”

“That’s my thing—writing lyrics,” Ava added. While her exact writing process differs every time, she is what they call a true artist in that she draws inspiration from everything. “Sometimes it’ll be a title first, or I’ll be listening to a song and have an idea.” She even draws inspiration from random things her ex-boyfriend says, such as the title of her debut song “One for the Road,” or a line during a rant from her friend, which inspired the title of her newest song, “It’ll Buff.”

Although, her writing process changes when collaborating with others, such as Aaron McBee. Walking into the session and immediately asking what they were going to write about, Aaron humbled her quickly, saying to let the music flow. Which is exactly what it did. “I started saying ‘I don’t feel well’ because my allergies were bad, and we wrote a whole song about how I don’t feel well, and it actually turned out really good.” Collaborations with McBee are only the beginning, though. With aspirations to work with talents like Zach Bryan, Jessie Murph, and Post Malone, it’s only a matter of time before her name is listed as a co-writer for many hits.

An Apple Music girl—though we won’t hold it against her—Ava’s everyday playlist is called “Super Country,” composed of nearly every country song she’s ever liked. With that said, her new song will definitely be added to my own Spotify playlist.

Following the release of her debut single, “One for the Road,” Ava’s newest single, “It’ll Buff,” isn’t just meant for your country playlist; it’s the song you play at full volume with windows down and wind in your hair. It’s the song you belt out at the top of your lungs as you dwell in the kind of frustration only men can cause. It’s the song to which every scorned and heartbroken young woman can relate.

Ava, the kind of girl who only wears gold jewelry, was shocked to find a silver diamond earring in the backseat of her then-boyfriend's car. While we’re all stunned by the audacity of men at times, we are also, silently, grateful for this particular heartbreak of Ava’s, as it led to the iconic line, “I wouldn’t be the first blonde to put a fist through his dash.” (Apparently, his previous ex had beaten his car—not the smartest guy.) “I really just want it to be that song where girls are like, ‘Screw this guy,’” Ava said. “It’s one of those songs that puts it into perspective that this sucks, but it’ll get better.”

For her release party that was on November 2nd, since it coincided with the Georgia vs. Florida football game, in Athens, Ava and her team wore UGA jerseys bearing “Cherry Creek.

Ava will be releasing her next single "Ashtray" on February 21st and will perform her release show that night in Austin TX at 'Under The Rocks'. She recently performed at Madlife (Patio with band) on January 4th in Woodstock, and has other tour dates. Ava is currently finishing up the writing of her  debut EP (expected 6 songs) and was recorded in Stephenville TX the week of Jan 20th, with some very exciting names involved in the project. Her new single "It'll Buff" was featured on IHeart Radio's Backyard Country on The Bull two weeks in a row. Local listeners can support Ava by calling in to the station to request her music. Looking forward to summer, she will be releasing her single "Get You Back" (co-written by Lainey Wilson) and the song will be released on the same day Ava is opening for Lainey Wilson live in concert at Hoofbeat country fest in Wisconsin (Fri, June 27th).

Ava Connell, a rising 19-year-old country singer from Marietta, shares her journey from performing at 14 to playing over 100 shows annually. Inspired by heartbreak and everyday life, her songs, including her newest single "It'll Buff," resonate with young women. Ava credits her success to a strong support system.

Local Roswell school receives high recognition

Mayor Wilson congratulates a student
“Mayor Kurt Wilson declared Thursday, November 14, 2024, as Atlanta Academy Day, recognizing the school.”

Atlanta Academy is proud to announce its recognition as a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School, an esteemed honor awarded by the U.S. Department of Education to schools demonstrating exceptional academic performance or significant progress in closing achievement gaps. In celebration of this achievement, Mayor Kurt Wilson declared Thursday, November 14, 2024, as Atlanta Academy Day, recognizing the school’s commitment to academic excellence, innovative practices and its vital role in shaping the future of its students and community.

This marks Atlanta Academy’s second time receiving this award, having previously been recognized in 2017 under the Exemplary High Performing School category, which includes schools among the highest performers in their state.

U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona recognized 356 schools nationwide for their excellence this year. “The National Blue Ribbon Schools Award is a testament to the exceptional achievements of students and educators at each of these schools", he said. The 2024 National Blue Ribbon Schools are raising the bar for our nation's students, serving as models for effective teaching and intentional collaboration in their communities. As we celebrate achievements, let's look to these schools for inspiration as we champion education as the foundation of a brighter future for every child." These schools are led by visionary leaders, showcase effective teaching practices prioritizing robust professional development for their staff.

"At Atlanta Academy, our mission is to nurture not only academic excellence but also the social and emotional well-being of every student," said Principal Angela Naples. "Being named a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School reflects our commitment to building a community founded on kindness, inclusion and respect. When students feel safe, accepted and valued, they are empowered to excel academically and grow as confident, compassionate individuals. This honor celebrates the collective dedication of our students, staff and families to creating an environment where every child can thrive and succeed". Atlanta Academy will proudly display the award flag, serving as an inspiration to educators nationwide.

National Blue Ribbon Schools are led by leaders who articulate a clear vision of instructional excellence and uphold high standards. They showcase effective teaching methods and offer robust professional development for their staff.

The Department recognizes all schools based on student performance data, including assessment results, student subgroup performance and graduation rates. Schools are recognized in both or either of two performance categories:

• Exemplary High Performing Schools: These schools are among the top performers in their state as measured by assessments or national tests.

• Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools: These schools excel in narrowing achievement gaps between different student groups and the overall student body.

Each nominated school submits a comprehensive application. The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes public and private elementary, middle, and high schools based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. Every year since the Program was established in 1982, the U. S. Department of Education has sought out and highlighted schools that are demonstrating that all students can achieve to high levels. A National Blue Ribbon School flag gracing a school’s entryway or a flagpole is a widely recognized symbol of exemplary teaching and learning.

Atlanta Academy, located in Roswell, Ga., is a non-denominational private school serving children in preschool through grade 8. Founded in 2000, the school is dedicated to providing a well-rounded education that nurtures academic excellence, creativity, and social and emotional intelligence. With an enrollment of 395 students and over 75 dedicated faculty and staff, Atlanta Academy fosters a dynamic, collaborative, and nurturing learning environment, preparing students to thrive as confident, thoughtful, and engaged global citizens.

ASHLEY CURLING'S Audible Artistry

Soprano Opera singer, Ashley Curling has perfected her operatic sound through education, experience and practice, becoming a professional opera singer.

DID YOU ALWAYS KNOW YOU WANTED TO BE A PROFESSIONAL OPERA SINGER?

I have always loved music, and loved to sing. I sang in many choirs as a child and I could nearly always be heard, no matter how many singers were in the choir or how softly I was singing.

DID YOU GET A CERTAIN INSPIRATION FROM A PERFORMER THAT YOU ADMIRED?

If I had to choose one, it would be American soprano Renee Fleming.

HOW DID YOU LEARN TO PERFECT YOUR CRAFT?

I studied at Indiana University where I was taught by esteemed Romanian soprano and teacher Virginia Zeani. Her passion for continuing the legacy of bel canto singing is something I hope to pass to students of my own someday.

HOW DID YOUR EXPERIENCE CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR ABILITY TO SERVE WITH THE ROSWELL ARTS FUND BOARD?

Opera is a culmination of many different art forms, so I understand how different types of art can work together to create unique, significant and memorable experiences.

WHAT SUCCESSES HAVE YOU SEEN WHILE SERVING?

The one that touched me the most was the Pop-In Performance series. In 2020, there was a time when assisted living and memory care residents were unable to receive visits from friends and family, due to the pandemic. RAF designed the pop-in series to bring artists in to perform outdoor concerts for these communities, so that residents could enjoy high quality performances from the safety of their windows or outdoor common spaces. It is always a privilege to witness art bringing communities together.

One Roswell Arts Fund member brings color and life through her operatic voice

"I have

had the privilege of bearing witness to the different ways that art can touch the human spirit and its unique capacity to move and heal the soul. I think that is what makes art special...it brings communities together by serving as a unifier. " -Ashley Curling

MARKETPLACE DENTISTRY CHAMPIONS

Innovative Practices

Bringing technology, compassion and expertise to your family's dental care

Maintaining your captivating smile requires the help of a knowledgeable and talented dentist that can guide you through the best way to keep that beautiful grin healthy. At Market Place Dentistry, Dr. Jordan BlankenshipSniker has developed a unique dental practice that welcomes everyone and seamlessly blends technology with holistic principles to bring your family the best possible care.   Dr. Blankenship-Sniker aims to be a dentist to all. Whether your family member needs special accommodations or a unique communication style, Dr. Blankenship-Sniker has created a safe space for all, no matter what their needs are. “This is something that was always going to happen in the practice I built. My brother is a non-verbal, Autistic adult who I've watched try to navigate life in a world that wasn't really designed for him, but that doesn't mean he is the one who needs to change. Thus, I made it a priority of mine to be accepting of those who do not fit the mold such as patients with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, dementia and patients that have medically complex challenges. We provide a sensory-friendly environment, including weighted blankets, dimmed lights, less high-pitched handpieces and calming music, along with a highly trained staff”, says Dr. Blankenship-Sniker.

Market Place Dentistry is also the home of some of the most innovative and cutting-edge technologies available to the dental field. Featuring products such as SimplyPerio, which is crucial in diagnosing bacteria and viruses in the mouth that may be the culprit of many problems patients face. Likewise, the use of the Primescan 3D Scanner rids patients of the goopy impressions that can be so unpleasant. Intraoral cameras allow patients to become educated about the biology of their mouth and can help in the decision process of how to receive care.

However, technology isn’t the only way that Dr. BlankenshipSniker aims to provide the best experience. A holistic and functional approach is at the forefront of Market Place Dentistry.  “I began making changes in my practice by using non-forever chemical containing flosses and toothpastes, utilizing a natural-oil mouthwash that promotes healing… and checking the patient's mouth-body connection, such as hormones, nutrition, stress level and other ailments”, remarks Dr. Blankenship-Sniker.

Market PlaceDentistry's innovative atmosphere sets the bar for other practices to follow suit, enabling optimal care for everyone.

HOW TO MAKE

DIY GOLD LEAF JEWELRY DISHES

These cute and colorful dishes work perfectly to organize and display your jewelry, keys, or you name it! And you know what? They’re so easy to make!

supplies you’ll need:

• Wooden bowls, trays, etc.

• Gold leaf (or metallic gold paint)

• Gentle gold leaf brush

• Mod Podge (or gold leaf adhesive)

• Acrylic paint

• Paint brushes

• Painters tape (optional)

steps to do:

• Grab a wooden bowl, some acrylic paint, and a brush.

• Hand paint some paint on one section of the bowl.

• Let the first coat dry and paint another two to three coats of paint until you’re happy with the result.

• Let the paint fully dry.

• I wanted my gold leaf paper to overlap the paint for a layered look, so I took a paint brush and painted some Mod Podge in an overlapping pattern.

• Once the Mod Podge gets tacky, use your hand to apply the gold leaf and accompanying wax sheet.

• Push the gold leaf onto the tacky glue, then remove the top layer of paper.

• Use your fingers to gently push the gold leaf onto the glue a little further.

• Next, use the gold leaf brush to smooth over the whole area and gently wipe away any excess gold leaf. Pay extra attention to the edges.

• Next, smooth the gold leaf section as much as possible, but don’t worry about any imperfections. The organic look of the gold leaf being imperfect gives the piece character.

• Next, work your way to the outer edge.

• Once the gold leaf is perfected, gently brush over the leaf with some Mod Podge to seal it to the bowl.

• Let it completely dry and enjoy!

“They’re a great and affordable gift idea for friends.”

THE SCOTTSDALE LURE OF

The endless skies of blue are interrupted only by cacti rising majestically from the ground, arms reaching skyward, and palm trees, which are often adorned by lights that twinkle when the sun sets. There are vistas of open desert, rising mountains, and even the lush green of the locale’s many golf courses. And, of course, there are the vibrant shopping, dining, art, and event scenes, too.

Scottsdale is a city located in Metro Phoenix in Arizona, which as a whole is nicknamed “The Valley of the Sun” for its more than 330 days of sun each year—one of the reasons the area is a draw for visitors. With few rainy days, it’s easy to plan your daily activities without worry. Yes, though, the summer gets hot. But the rest of the year? Perfection.

Scottsdale is a mix of a resort destination, city, and suburbs, with more open desert the further north you venture. To the south is Downtown Scottsdale—also known as Old Town Scottsdale—which is a mix of old Southwestern charm

(including the legendary cowboy saloon, Rusty Spur Saloon); modern eateries from famed chefs; lots of shopping at small boutiques and specialty shops; the Arts District , which is filled with art galleries; and even tasting rooms from Arizona wineries located along the famed Scottsdale Wine Trail

Nearby is Scottsdale Fashion Square , one of the nation’s premier shopping destinations. While you’ll find many usual retailers there, there are also more than 40 luxury brands, including Christian Louboutin, Bottega Veneta, and Louis Vuitton.

Heading north are open-air shopping destinations Scottsdale Quarter and Kierland Commons , which sit across the street from each other. Take the afternoon or evening to stroll through, exploring the shops, restaurants, and activity destinations such as the indoor mini-golf destination Puttshack . What else is there to see and do? Plenty.

FROM RELAXATION TO SHOPPING TO GOLF TO SIGHTSEEING, THIS DESTINATION HAS IT ALL

PLAY

Like golf? There are more than 200 golf courses in the Scottsdale area. Whether you’re a pro or just starting out, there is a course for you. One of the most popular in the area is the TPC Scottsdale as it is the locale of the WM Phoenix Open, the most-attended golf tournament in the world.

For most of the year, Scottsdale boasts warm temperatures, making spending a day splashing in a pool a perfect choice. Many local resorts have pool areas that feature fun extras such as water slides, lazy rivers, and even a cooled sand beach. And even if you’re not an on-site guest, you can often purchase a day pass to be on-site through ResortPass.com.

Of course, there’s also plenty of outdoor recreation in Scottsdale. Pinnacle Peak in North Scottsdale is a popular mountain to hike (as is the iconic Camelback Mountain, which is located in nearby Phoenix), and the Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt is a park and trail system spread over 11 miles. Kids love McCormickStillman Railroad Park , which boasts a small-scale train that circles the park and plenty of play areas.

A destination filled with numerous attractions is A rizona Boardwalk , a center that includes Butterfly Wonderland , OdySea Aquarium , Ripley’s Believe It or Not! , Museum of Illusions , and more.

CULTURE

The beauty of Scottsdale’s Sonoran Desert led famed architect, Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), to build Taliesin West , his winter home and desert laboratory, in a mountainside in East Scottsdale. Today, there are daily tours of the UNESCO World Heritage site, and events are offered often.

However, Wright’s architecture isn’t the only art in the area. Beyond the Arts District in Downtown Scottsdale, there is public art all around the city, from sculptures to murals, so definitely keep your eyes open!

There are also museums such as Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West , a Smithsonian Affiliate, which showcases items from the Greater Western region, and the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art , affectionately known as SMoCA.

On Thursday evenings, there’s a free public ArtWalk in the Arts District, where galleries stay open later. Wander the streets and galleries, often against a backdrop of live music and even artist appearances.

NEARBY

While there’s so much to do, see, and experience in Scottsdale proper, there’s also much to see nearby. Make sure to experience the Musical Instrument Museum (affectionately known as the MIM), which is the world’s only global instrument museum. Desert Botanical Garden features an array of desert plants, and Phoenix Art Museum has an impressive collection of art. And, of course, the Phoenix Zoo is a perfect place for both kids and adults alike.

Patriotism Flooded The Room at Roswell Rotary

On October 15, 2024, State Senator John Albers presented his moving story of The Star Spangled Banner to the Roswell Rotary Club and in moments, everyone in the room was changed forever. Tears and pride and patriotism flooded the room and Club member Sandy Buhler, still with tears in her own eyes, said “We just have to share this with everyone! It’s so important!” Immediately Sandy spearheaded a plan to record John’s presentation so that it could be used in schools and in other clubs and with the youth of the Rotary Interact Clubs. With the help of Senator Albers staff and videographer Tran Smith and a team from Roswell Rotary, the video was recorded and is now being shared with so many citizens. Roswell Rotary Club President Nancy Alterman said, “This is one of the beauties of Rotary. We can get an idea and through our network within the community we can make things happen so quickly!” Of course, we would not have this moving patriotic story with out the passion for America of Sen. John Albers. “It is my honor to inspire others and especially our youth with the story behind this song of our country’s strength. I am so proud to be part of this project!”

Everyone who sees this video will understand why we never let the flag touch the ground and will learn forgotten lessons about the history of the battles and “rockets red glare”. Please use the QR code to watch the video for yourself and to share with others. And next time you sing the Star Spangled Banner, may you remember the meaning of the song and the lives of those who protected our flag.

We would like to say thank you to our Roswell Rotarian sponsor and leader of this video project: Sandy Buhler
