First Ever Multigenerational Fishing Derby in Roswell

Saturday, Oct 19th, Roswell Recreation & Parks collaborated with Roswell Rotary to host a Multigenerational Fishing Derby. This first year event encouraged teams comprised of a youth, a parent-aged person and a grandparent-aged person to work together to build a bamboo fishing rod and then use in the pond at the back of the Roswell Area Park on Woodstock Road. It was a beautiful morning for about a hundred folks from all over Roswell to come together to learn how to tie knots, hold a fishing pole and lau gh. While they were fishing, the youth received tickets for certain activities like putting the worm on the hook, taking the fish/turtle off the hook, releasing the fish/turtle off the hook, etc. The goal was to earn 8-10 tickets. So, when the team was finished fishing, they went to the Tackle Shop where they shopped to fill their new Tacklebox by trading in the tickets. The Tackle Shop, staffed by members of the Roswell High School Interact Club, had fishing line, bobbers, weights, hooks, a flashlight, tweezers and an acti vity area for the youth to personalize their box with stickers and markers.

The bamboo used was harvested by thinning out the bamboo garden at historic Mimosa Hall and Bulloch Hall. WinWin! Originally, Craig Fuller, a Park Supervisor with Roswell Recreation & Parks, approached Roswell Rotary hoping to create some collaborative family events by using some under-utilized City of Roswell assets like the lake at Roswell Area Park. “The Fishing Derby really served as a ‘proof of concept’. We needed to make sure that our community would sign-up and show up. Proudly they did!” Roswell Rotary member, Becky Nelson, really pulled the committee and mission together. “Our number one question of the day was ‘When is the next one?’ We had intact families fishing together and we had strangers unite to make a team. It was truly collaborative. I’d like to think that this is the first of many highlighting underused Roswell area like the urban woods, the disk golf course, et c.”

City of Hope

You don't have to travel to Atlanta to receive some of the best cancer care in the country.

Dr. Kristin Higgins

Dr. Kristin Higgins, a renowned radiation oncologist with a specialization in lung cancer, assumed the role of Chief Clinical Officer at City of Hope Atlanta in January 2024. Her appointment marks an exciting chapter for City of Hope’s Atlanta campus as it continues its mission to provide world-class, patient-centered cancer care in Georgia.

Dr. Higgins brings a wealth of expertise to her new role. After an impressive 13-year tenure at Emory University, where she served as Vice Chair for Clinical Research in Radiation Oncology, she is poised to guide City of Hope Atlanta to new heights. Known for her innovative approach to treating lung cancer, Dr. Higgins has a reputation for putting patients first—a value that aligns seamlessly with City of Hope’s mission.

City of Hope, founded over a century ago in Los Angeles, is a globally recognized leader in cancer treatment and research. Its legacy includes pioneering advances that have changed the face of medicine, such as the development of synthetic insulin and breakthrough cancer therapies. Ranked #5 by U.S. News & World Report for cancer care, City of Hope expanded its reach in 2022 with the acquisition of Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) locations in Phoenix, Chicago, and Atlanta. This acquisition created a cohesive, nationwide network focused exclusively on comprehensive cancer care.

What sets City of Hope apart from other institutions is its holistic and patient-centered approach to cancer treatment. “Everything a cancer patient needs is under one roof,” says Dr. Higgins. “From expedited appointments to personalized care, our entire team is aligned around the mission to turn hope into reality.” This integrated model ensures that patients receive not just cutting-edge medical treatments but also the emotional, psychological, and practical support they need during their journey.

“Everything a cancer patient needs is under one roof,” says Dr. Higgins. “From expedited appointments to personalized care, our entire team is aligned around the mission to turn hope into reality.”

City of Hope Atlanta is also deeply committed to engaging with the local community, offering educational events and free screenings to raise awareness and support early detection efforts. Two upcoming events underscore this commitment: a Cervical Cancer Screening Event on January 14 and a Breast Cancer Screening Event on March 12. These events are part of City of Hope’s broader strategy to make top-tier cancer care accessible and proactive for everyone in the community.

Dr. Higgins, a passionate advocate for patient care, highlights the deeply rewarding nature of her work. “Having a patient with stage 3 lung cancer that is curable but not necessarily a slam-dunk—taking those patients through radiation, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy, going through follow-up with them, and being able to tell them they are cured—is probably one of the most rewarding experiences,” she shares. Her dedication exemplifies City of Hope’s commitment to offering not just treatment but also genuine hope and healing.

The Atlanta campus is more than just a treatment center; it’s a hub of innovation and compassionate care. With a multidisciplinary team of experts working collaboratively under one roof, patients at City of Hope Atlanta have access to the latest advancements in oncology, clinical trials, and supportive therapies. This approach ensures that each patient receives a personalized treatment plan tailored to their unique needs and circumstances.

In Atlanta, the impact of City of Hope’s expansion is already being felt. The integration of CTCA’s infrastructure with City of Hope’s cutting-edge research and patient-centered philosophy has created a robust cancer care network that’s uniquely positioned to serve patients in the Southeast. For local residents facing a cancer diagnosis, this means access to some of the most advanced treatments available anywhere in the world, delivered by a team that genuinely cares about their well-being.

Dr. Higgins and her team are not just transforming cancer care—they are transforming lives. Their dedication to each patient’s journey, from diagnosis to survivorship, ensures that no one faces cancer alone. “At City of Hope, it’s about more than medicine,” Dr. Higgins says. “It’s about human connection and the belief that together, we can overcome even the most challenging diagnoses.”

WHAT MAKES YOUR Community Special?

Highlighting one of Roswell's greatest treasures

ARTICLE BY BILL HOBAN, CENTURY21 CONNECT REALTY

As a realtor, I have to keep in mind what makes a community so special that people would want to live there.  I live in Roswell, Georgia where there are a lot of things that make it truly special:  the town history, Canton Street with shops, galleries and restaurants; strong schools and award-winning parks; the Chattahoochee River and so much more!  One place I think makes Roswell particularly unique is the Chattahoochee Nature Center (CNC) on Willeo Road.  A private, non-profit 501(c) (3) organization founded in the mid-1970’s, their mission is “to connect people with nature.” And they have done just that for decades.  My wife grew up in Buckhead, but visited the CNC on elementary school field trips.  From educational opportunities and camps to guided canoe trips, hikes, festivals and more, CNC caters to kids and adults alike.  It’s also a beautiful place to hold an event with numerous venues throughout the property.

As a nonprofit, CNC relies on volunteers and community support.  Each year, the CNC hosts a fundraiser called the EcoChallenge.  This is an Amazing Race type event facilitated by PlayWorks Group, a team building firm, also based in Roswell, GA.  The event kicks off with a canoe race and then moves corporate teams throughout the CNC grounds and even onto the river through a series of challenges, clues and photo opportunities.  This event is a great way to let folks who may not be familiar with the Chattahoochee Nature Center see how beautiful the property is while raising funds to help support it.  The Eco-Challenge also inspires corporations (and the individual participants) to volunteer their time and connect even more with nature.  It’s a win-win!

I know that the Chattahoochee Nature Center and PlayWorks Group would be thrilled to put on a similar event for your organization if you were looking for something fun and different to build your team.

All this to say, I always mention the Chattahoochee Nature Center when working with clients.  It’s a great conversation starter and usually brings back fond memories for folks who grew up in the Atlanta area.  For clients moving to the area, they are undoubtedly impressed by this unique Roswell landmark.

Before and Afters

Alex Sutton Switches Gears

Tennis is an ultra-popular sport in the South. In fact, when driving around Roswell on any given weekend, you can see hundreds of players excited to commence their weekly neighborhood battles.

Alex Sutton was thrilled to discover this after his move to Atlanta in 2017, where he was a Senior Director for a large automotive retail and service provider. He was amazed by just how many fans there were for this 150-yearold sport.

In 2020 when the pandemic hit, causing everyone to stay home, Mr. Sutton decided it was time to let his passion fill a need for the community and Sutton Total Tennis was born.

FULFILLING DESIRES

BY FOLLOWING PASSIONS

"THE KIDS’ CLASSES LED TO ADULT LESSONS, THEN RACQUET RESTRINGING... AFTER GETTING CONNECTED WITH RACQUET BRANDS I HAD A FULL PRO SHOP IN MY BASEMENT."

WHERE DID YOUR INTEREST IN TENNIS COME FROM?

Tennis has always been a part of my life. I really don't remember starting. It was just something my family always did. Both of my parents played, as did my grandfather into his nineties.  I grew up playing on the public courts in New York in the 1980's, then high school tennis in New Jersey and finally college tennis in Philadelphia.

WHAT GAVE YOU THE INSPIRATION TO OPEN A BUSINESS LIKE SUTTON TOTAL TENNIS?

In 2020, I decided to put on some classes for the children in my subdivision. The kid’s classes led to adult lessons, which led to ALTA team practices, then racquet restringing. Later, I got connected with some racquet brands, and before I knew it, I had a full on pro shop in my house. Then in 2024, with the loving support of my family, I decided to merge my passion for tennis with my professional retail and service background and take my basement operation full scale by opening my shop here in Roswell.

DO YOU HOLD ANY TENNIS

CERTIFICATIONS?

Yes, I hold a teaching instructor certification with USPTA and a Master Racquet Technician certification with USRSA.

WHAT DOES SUTTON TOTAL TENNIS OFFER?

We offer racquet restringing and regripping services. We have apparel and shoe brands including K-Swiss, Lacoste and Adidas. We carry racquets from Prince, Head, Tecnifibre, Dunlop as well as other innovative brands like Solinco and Diadem. For Pickleball fans we carry paddles for players of all levels. When not at the shop I'm usually on court giving lessons to players of all ages in subdivisions all around Roswell.

Alex’s attention to detail, love of the game and impressive knowledge of the sport shines through when you walk into Sutton Total Tennis. It is apparent that he can provide individualized assistance to each player that walks in the shop.

REVITALIZE YOUR ROUTINE:

TWO FITNESS PROGRAMS TO ENERGIZE YOUR BODY AND MINDSET

If you're looking to shake up your fitness routine, Heidi Morris’s Boot Camp in the Park and DeAri Loggins’ The Little Yogis Studio offer two fun and unique ways to get moving, stay healthy, and connect with others. These programs focus on both physical health and mindfulness, providing fresh and engaging experiences for everyone.

Founded in 2007, Boot Camp in the Park offers women a chance to work out outdoors in a supportive, community-building environment. Heidi Morris started the program after noticing a lack of outdoor fitness options. “I wanted to create a fun, challenging way for women to get fit,” she shared.

All workout sessions are outdoors unless the temperature drops below 30 degrees.

Held at various parks, each one-hour sessions with exercises like walking with hand weights and circuit training. With small classes and flexible scheduling, it suits all fitness levels. Heidi’s goal is to inspire a love of exercise, seen in women who’ve stayed for over a decade. Fitness field trips add variety.

The Little Yogis Studio, located in Roswell, offers more than just yoga. DeAri Loggins’ program combines movement, creativity, and mindfulness for both children and adults. With offerings in yoga, dance, musical theater, podcasting, and more, the LY Studio fosters an environment where self-expression & discovery thrive.

“We hope families leave our studio with more than skills—they leave with memories, a sense of community, and a deeper connection to themselves and one another,” said Loggins. “For children, it’s a foundation of confidence, creativity, and tools for emotional intelligence. For adults, it’s a reminder to honor play, rest, and the journey of self-growth.”

Whether you’re seeking outdoor fitness or creative exploration, these two programs provide the perfect foundation for a fresh start.

NEW HEALTH GOALS for a New Year

MAKING WOMEN'S MATURING HEALTH HER NUMBER ONE PRIORITY

Dr. Melissa Parker

Passions are what make us tick, give us a reason to get up in the morning and propel us through life with purpose and intention. Life can be so much sweeter if we are excited about practicing, perfecting and improving a skill or service that we love and enjoy. For Melissa Parker, MD, FACOG, this passion was developed when her fifth grade teacher gave her a book that would form the trajectory of her young life. That day a future Ob/Gyn was born.

Since then, Dr. Parker has been feverishly calculating how to attain her goals. Her success was realized when she graduated from Emory University's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. After joining Roswell

Ob/Gyn in 1999, she became a valuable team member caring for women in all phases of life and has been doing so for the past 25 years.

By any calculation one would say, Dr. Parker has had a successful and happy existence, contributing to the community with her talents and care. Yet, tragedy struck when her son William suffered a traumatic brain injury while playing in an eighth grade football game. “As a physician, waiting for the ambulance, I knew while he lay there unconscious, I may very well lose my son before we even get to a hospital,” remembers Dr. Parker.

After surgery, weeks in the ICU and thousands of prayers that came from friends, colleagues and strangers, William began to get better, eventually making a full recovery and will be graduating from Auburn in December. Dr. Parker attributes his recovery to the boxes of prayers he received, the telephone calls of encouragement and the hundreds of acts of kindness the family encountered during this trying time. “I came across a name I knew..one of my long term patients and she wrote next to her name, ‘Dr. Parker you were always there for me…now I’m here for You,” Dr. Parker reminisces.

This is a testament to the effect Dr. Parker has on all around her and this sentiment stretches to her practice where she has enjoyed years of friendships, cultivated with patients that have grown with her. As she has grown, so has her mission to continue helping these women beyond child bearing years. This need prompted Dr. Parker to research, attend anti-aging medical conferences and procure additional education with a certification in Anti-Aging through Empire Medical’s

William, Melissa and Olivia Parker

Functional Medicine program. Now, she is ready to start a new adventure in helping women realize their health and wellness goals through education, collaboration and action. Consequently, Dr. Parker has been able to transition from Ob/Gyn doctor to entrepreneur with the opening of Big Sky Anti-Aging, located at the Avalon.

However, this was only the beginning of the changes that Dr. Parker would make, because the big sky of Montana was calling. Yearning to fill her cup by spending time in nature, visiting with family and enjoying the amenities of Bozeman, while simultaneously operating her practice was a dream that Dr. Parker had and she was determined to make it happen. “I still remember on one of my trips landing in Bozeman in my late twenties, gazing at the mountains, the rivers, and the valley of Bozeman proper, that I had a realization that I would own a home myself one day in Montana so that I could enjoy all the serenity and activities on a more frequent basis. How quickly time passes as I am at present seven weeks into building a home with my husband Michael, three miles from my parents, in Bozeman”, says Dr. Parker.

The challenge was now to integrate this unique arrangement with her new practice. So, with determination and ingenuity, Dr. Parker crafted a schedule that would allow her to practice remotely in Montana and in person in Georgia. Dr. Parker learned from her son what true grit, determination and the will to accomplish anything can do. She took that winning spirit and became a pioneer in the growing field of anti-aging while also enjoying everything she loves about both Montana and Georgia.

Big Sky Anti Aging is the culmination of professional experience, the passion for her chosen craft and the resolve to change women’s lives. “Being an ObGyn, I daily hear the complaints and symptoms that occur as we enter our mid thirties and later. There is nothing more rewarding than to have a patient say ‘Thank you for listening’ and ‘Thank you for not making me feel like I was crazy’.  We women need someone to listen and to provide guidance in this changing time of our lives,” says Dr. Parker.

Dr. Parker also believes that Integrative Medicine is important in this stage of life. “This includes broader lab evaluations and possibly even gut health assessments. With this information, we doctors can, hopefully, put together a Longevity Plan to treat the underlying causes of symptoms and create a ‘Life Plan’ to maintain vitality,” remarks Dr. Parker.

Dr. Parker believes that the era of women feeling alone as they mature is coming to an end as physicians realize that the later stages of life can be beautiful and enjoyable. Big Sky Anti-Aging aims to help women become, “the CEO of their own mind, body and soul.”

Through numerous assessment options, therapies can be discussed and prescribed based on each woman’s unique need, creating the ability to live their best life.

“Today, through social media, podcasts and medical influencers, patients are taking it upon themselves to listen and come with questions about their hormones and their health and I love it. I have been doing this research for myself over the past years and I’m finally at a place to be able share what I have learned.”

GIA PERGOLINI

At just 20 years old, Gia Pergolini has already made a splash on the international stage, securing her place in Paralympic history as a two-time gold medalist. The Roswell native who’s now studying at Florida International University represented the U.S. at the 2020 and 2024 Summer Paralympic Games.

“Words can't describe how honored and grateful I am to compete for the greatest country in the world,” explained Gia. “It was so surreal and a moment I will never forget.”

Gia took her first dip into the pool at 4 years old and started swimming competitively at age 5. “Swimming was my passion," she said, though growing up, she also dabbled in other sports like lacrosse, soccer, tennis, and gymnastics. However, at the age of 9, her life took a significant turn when she was diagnosed with Stargardt's Disease, a genetic eye condition that causes the gradual loss of central vision. This rare diagnosis brought clarity to her focus on swimming. Her first international breakthrough came at the 2017 World Para Swimming Championships, where she earned her first silver medal in the 100-meter backstroke at the age of 13. She won silver again in 2019. By the time the 2020 Paralympics rolled around, Gia was ready to make a bigger splash. At just 17 years old, she broke the world record in the 100-meter backstroke during the qualifying heats, then shattered her own record in the finals, winning her first Paralympic gold medal. Gia continued to ride the high tide of success into the 2024 Summer Paralympics, bringing home another gold in the 100-meter backstroke and a silver in the 50-meter freestyle.

“It's always an unreal feeling touching the wall and knowing you did it,” Gia admitted. "Realizing everything I worked and trained hard for, all the sacrifices I made in the past was worth it.”

Despite her success, Gia stays grounded. “Sometimes when I show people my medals, it still feels surreal,” she said. “Seeing their amazement reminds me just how far I’ve come. My friends and family often say, ‘Only a tiny percentage of the world makes it to the Olympics or Paralympics.’ I’m blessed and honored.”

The road to gold, however, wasn’t always smooth. Gia credits her team—including swim coach Ian Murray from Dynamo Swim Club and personal trainer Larry Keaton, who’s been with her since the start—for keeping her focused and afloat during tough times. “They have challenged me mentally and physically, helping me become a better athlete,” Gia explained. “Most important, my family—especially my mom Alice who has guided and supported me, even at my lowest moments. I love her more than life itself. My brothers Matt and David are always there to pump me up and try to guide me from their experiences. Without my father Bill, I wouldn't be the tough, never quit headstrong person that I am today.”

Though she’s taking a brief break to finish college, Gia plans to train for the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games. Her message to others is one of resilience and authenticity: “Be yourself. People have doubted or criticized me, but I had to learn that their opinions don’t define me. As long as you stay true to who you are and keep a positive mindset, you’re unstoppable.”

Driven by a sense of purpose and supported by those who believe in her, Gia Pergolini is not only breaking records in the pool but also redefining what it means to be a champion.

Gia has been awarded the Sarah Woolf Spirit Award by the Center for the Visually Impaired in Atlanta. “CVI helped me tremendously when I was first diagnosed with Stargardt’s Disease. I’m incredibly grateful,” she said, looking forward to attending the 2025 Night Visions Gala: Visions of Hope in March.

A person can be eating the right foods and exercising regularly, but if they are hormonally unbalanced, most likely they will not achieve their desired results.

How we feel is affected by hormonal imbalances, issues with our gut & digestion, liver function problems, our cortisol levels and insulin resistance, all effect how we feel and function. These are culprits of old age.

The solution is to be hormonally balanced taking out of the equation “for your age”.

We want you to have hormonal levels of a healthy young adult. If we get you feeling younger, you will start moving younger. When you start moving younger you will start looking younger. That coupled with guidance on nutrition and exercise will lead to a longer happier healthier life.

TAIL OF HEALING:

THE IMPACT OF HAPPY TAILS PET THERAPY

PHOTOGRAPHY BY HAPPY TAILS PET THERAPY

When words and medicine fall short, a wagging tail or a gentle purr can work wonders. For over 30 years, Happy Tails Pet Therapy has been bringing moments of joy, comfort, and healing to those who need it most.

Founded in 1991 by a local veterinarian, Happy Tails began with her visits to a nursing home, where she saw the positive impact her

dog had on residents. What started as a simple act of kindness grew as friends joined her, eventually becoming a full-fledged pet therapy organization. Today, Happy Tails has 240 dedicated members who visit over 200 facilities, including hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, mental health facilities, businesses, and schools.

“We offer three types of pet therapy services,” shared Leah Hall, Executive Board Secretary. “Animal-Assisted Activity is our most common. These visits with trained therapy animals bring comfort to people facing mental or physical challenges. AnimalAssisted Therapy pairs pets with healthcare professionals to help patients achieve therapy goals like improving mobility. And our READing Paws program supports children in schools and libraries, creating a judgment-free environment for young readers.”

The impact is profound. Therapy pets enhance cognitive skills, motor functions, and memory, but perhaps their greatest gift is emotional. “I’ll never forget a visit to Emory Rehabilitation Hospital with my previous Happy Tails dog, Wembley,” Hall recalled. “The patient was sitting in a chair and Wembley walked right up to her and laid her head in the woman's lap. She started to cry and said, ‘You don’t know how much I needed this today.’ But I think Wembley did know. I believe the animals can sense when someone needs them and their ability to respond to those emotions is always incredible to see.”

“Happy Tails visits pawsitively uplift the hearts and spirits of the skilled nursing and rehab residents,” shared Mirie Manzour, Volunteer Services Manager at Jewish HomeLife Communities. “These interactions add much life to the residents’ days, distract from pain and instill joy in their hearts.”

As a volunteer nonprofit, Happy Tails relies on community support. “We offer monthly orientations for new members and

encourage anyone interested in sharing the human-animal bond to join us,” said Hall. “We need more volunteers to expand our reach and donations to cover training and testing costs.”

“It’s a wish list for these adults that we strive to make come true.”

Being Positioned is a nonprofit creating unforgettable, once in-a-lifetime, travel experiences for individuals affected by life-altering genetic disorders. Recipients pick the destination, suggest excursions, and influence every aspect of their journey. Being Positioned arranges everything for the  excursions, and influences every aspect of their journey as well as pay for the airfare, accommodations, and activities. “It’s a wish list for these adults that we strive to make come true,” explained Founder and Executive Director Christina Menkemeller.

Like many non-profits, there is a personal connection to the founder, that drives their dream to help others with similar circumstances. And this is very much the case with Being Positioned as well.

In February 2016, Christina was finishing her master’s degree in social work, getting married, and moving from Texas to Florida. While walking to class one day, she suddenly lost her hearing in her left ear and began experiencing a severe episode of vertigo. Over the next month, she was repeatedly misdiagnosed, put on a special diet, and suffered through unnecessary procedures. An MRI of her brain revealed that Christina had a rare genetic disorder called Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2), which causes benign brain tumors to develop on the hearing and balance nerve as well as on the spine. Christina learned that her hearing loss in her left ear was permanent, and eventually, she would be completely deaf. Her future looked terrifying. During her first year of marriage, she underwent 9-months of chemotherapy in hopes of shrinking her tumors and

delaying further hearing loss. And after months of treatment, her tumors had stabilized.

To live life to its fullest, her husband, Cardin, and her decided to quit their jobs and set off on a yearlong journey around the world. Not knowing how long until Christina’s health would begin to decline, they knew it was only a matter of time. So, they decided to experience as many sights and sounds as possible while she could still hear.

Before their worldwide travels, Christina launched a blog called Being Positioned where she documented their travels and shared her medical journey. As she connected with people living with NF2 all over the world, she began to realize the power of traveling as a tool for coping with a serious illness. Over time, the idea of Being Positioned - the nonprofit, was born with the hope that her condition and their adventure abroad encourage and inspire others living with a rare genetic disorder.

Christina concluded, “Living with a rare genetic disorder is a constant disruption, but we give recipients a chance to momentarily break away from their daily struggles. Providing positive, memorable journeys to individuals living with rare genetic disorders has a lasting impact on their ability to cope with their physical challenges. We hope to give them a new outlook on living with their disorder and show them that they, too, are Being Positioned.”

THE RACE OF LIFE: RUNNING

Fitness, Motivation, and Renewed Purpose

As the new year begins and many of us focus on resolutions and goals, 60-yearold Antonio McKay is an example of perseverance, self-reflection, and the drive to be great. Based in Alpharetta, this Olympian isn’t just known for his legendary track and field career—he’s inspiring others every day through his motivational social media posts and coaching.

In 1984, at just 19 years old, Antonio McKay, Sr. made history on his birthday by becoming an Indoor World Record Holder. That year, he also earned titles as the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Champion and Olympic Trials Champion. At the Los Angeles Olympics, he won a gold medal in the 4x400m relay and a bronze medal in the 400m, solidifying his place among the world's elite athletes.

His success continued:

• 1985: Indoor USA Track & Field Champion

• 1986: Goodwill Games Gold Medalist

• 1987: Reclaimed the Indoor World Record and became Indoor USA Track & Field Champion

• 1988: Won his second Olympic gold in the 4x400m relay and another Indoor Track & Field Championship

• 1989: Secured a gold medal at the Indoor World Championships

• 1990: Earned another Indoor USA Track & Field Championship title

• 1991: Took home a silver medal at the Indoor World Championships

• 1993: Capped off his career with another Indoor USA Track & Field Championship Despite his achievements, McKay describes his journey with humility: “To come from the environment I come from, it is an unbelievable feeling to achieve great things. It also becomes addicting, to want to be great, and to keep pushing myself and respecting the competition.”

Today, his influence extends far beyond the track. Through his business, ONTRACK, he coaches athletes, delivers motivational speeches, and shares his wisdom through candid posts and videos on social media. His messages resonate with people from all walks of life, emphasizing themes of authenticity, resilience, and personal accountability.

In one post, he writes:

“Sometimes you wonder, ‘Why do I do this?’ And then you say, ‘I am unique, I am powerful, I am not them, I am only me!’ When you stop running the race, you’ve given up. But most people never even start the race—they just sit on the outside and give their opinion, which is mostly wrong. Stand for something.”

Even after retiring from professional competition, he remains committed to maintaining a healthy and balanced lifestyle. His routine is simple yet effective—working out six days a week, enjoying his favorite foods, and finding happiness in helping others. For him, health is not just about physical fitness; it’s a practice that includes emotional and mental well-being.

“Be true to yourself, respect what you eat, respect animals, respect nature, and take care of your body. Our body is a lot like the ocean—it is very powerful,” he shares.

As we enter 2025, McKay’s story and words are a powerful call to action. Whether you’re an athlete, a student, a professional, or someone looking for a fresh start, his advice offers a roadmap for success.

This January, as you set your intentions for the year, take a page from this Olympian’s playbook. Run your race, embrace your uniqueness, and make every step count. Because in the end, it’s not just about crossing the finish line—it’s about the legacy you leave behind.

DISCOVER MAGIC

IN LEARNING

Welcome to The Cottage School, where magic unfolds for students with special learning differences

As a K-12 institution catering specifically to unique learning needs, The Cottage School celebrates 40 years of empowering remarkable students. Its mission, which remains, since the school’s inception in 1985, is clear. Building a sense of self for students with special learning needs through academic and experiential programming, preparing individuals to

fulfill their true potential as confident, productive, and independent adults.

This milestone year is special as they open the new elementary campus in Roswell. It is home to over 60 eager learners and still growing.

Dr. Steve Palmer, the visionary leader, has always championed the power of early intervention, and response from community and families has been overwhelmingly positive. Palmer, is a dedicated educator and advocate recognized with numerous honors, including the prestigious Teacher of the Year and Disney's Teacherrific award. In 2019, he was named Greater North Fulton Nonprofit Leader of the Year. Having 30 years of experience serving students with learning differences, he is also a prominent figure on several educational boards, including as Chair/President of the Georgia Independent School Association and a board member of the Atlanta Autism Consortium. His vision is

rooted in collaboration with the community to raise awareness and advance solutions for learners with diverse needs.

Growing up in Florida and understanding the philosophies that made Disney World the happiest place on Earth, Dr. Palmer fostered a similar ethos at TCS. He believes that schools, too, can be joyous environments for learning. His philosophy is simple: “We do not have to be here at TCS; we get to be here.” This shift in perspective cultivates a positive atmosphere for both students and staff.

One of Dr. Palmer's primary goals is for students to "Find Their Voice." He empowers them to advocate for themselves, highlighting that students with learning differences—are simply "smart kids learning differently." The secret lies in teaching them in ways that resonate with their unique ways of thinking.

At The Cottage School, students are encouraged to view their learning differences not as obstacles, but

as advantages or “superpowers.” The staff works diligently to help students recognize and harness their strengths, fostering resilience for the future. They build relationships, inspire confidence, and ignite passion in the students.

Many successful individuals ranging from artists to entrepreneurs have navigated similar challenges and turned their differences into incredible opportunities.

The collaborative spirit among families and the TCS board ensures that every child feels valued and understood. With this board support, TCS is allowed to flourish and continue fulfilling its mission.

Dr. Palmer asserts, “It is not a mindset; it is a heartset.” Students with learning challenges can dream big and achieve anything when placed in the right educational environment. Guests often remark that TCS is truly magical, and this enchantment springs from the unwavering dedication of teachers, staff, families, and board members. The priority is building a supportive community that feels more like a family than just a school.

Families frequently express their gratitude, stating, “TCS didn’t just save our child; it saved our family too.” The commitment to meet each child where they are and teaching them in the most effective way possible is a tailored approach; there’s no one-sizefits-all solution because smart kids learn differently, and therefore, we teach differently.

We leave you with a quote from Walt Disney: “First, think. Second, believe. Third, dream, and Finally, dare.” At The Cottage School they inspire students to dream big and dare to achieve those dreams. Remember, once a TCS Cougar, always a Cougar!
