ello Sacramento Lifestyle friends! Our April issue is here and we have so much for you to read about!

Spring has sprung and gardens everywhere will soon be in bloom, including those in our local school gardens. Did you know that school gardens offer students not just an opportunity to learn how plants grow, but also gain skills in teamwork, hardwork, gratitude and leadership? We take a look at all that school gardens have to offer in this month's feature article.

Speaking of leadership, we are proud to introduce you to Christian Beecher — a remarkable young man who helped save six neighbors from a home fire. Christian is truly a Hometown Hero and we are sure you will be as moved by his story as we were! Also in this issue we take a closer look at Board-certified orthodontic specialists Giannetti and Booms, who have been in the "smile" business in Sacramento for 17 years. And we're happy to introduce you to a brand new Sacramento company Food Jets — don't forget to download their app! Sacramento Lifestyle produces monthly, inspirational, community-based stories. Our content is for the residents of our community, focusing on family and students, local business philanthropy and community events. Our goal is to connect local, reputable businesses within each community with our readers. It goes without saying that we couldn’t do any of it without the businesses that put their trust in partnering with us, so please when you visit one of our advertisers or call for that free estimate, let them know you read about them in Sacramento Lifestyle. We are truly honored that you choose to spend a little time with us each month and we’ll continue to do exactly what we’ve been doing. I would like to thank everyone for all the support and kind words since we launched our first issue in October 2015. It’s been an exciting ride since we launched and we’re glad to add you to the subscription list or the advertising list if you so desire. Just reach out to the editor or myself and we’ll be happy to add you to the publication.

magine it's 6pm, your family is starving, there's nothing in the fridge and you don't have time to go out to a restaurant. Wouldn't it be amazing if you could have a fresh and hot restaurant meal delivered to your home in 10 minutes? With FoodJets, your wish is now reality! Launched in November 2015, FoodJets offers curbside delivery of restaurant meals from local area restaurants for weekday lunch and dinner seven nights a week that arrives in about 10 minutes. According to CEO Darren McAdams, all the meals are under $10, and their daily menu also includes appetizers, desserts and beverages. So how does FoodJets work? McAdams says each day they tell the local and independent restaurants they work with how many of each meal they need. The restaurants pre-package the meals in special containers FoodJets gives them that are not only reusable and recyclable, but also dishwasher and microwave safe. The restaurants drop off the pre-packaged meals to FoodJets' 13,000 square-foot warehouse staging area, which are then placed into hot bags or coolers. FoodJets' drivers soon arrive and load up their vehicles with the hot bags and coolers. "All the cars are modified to accept electrical — we took the seats out and added electrical for the hot bags," McAdams explains. "And in the back we put a bench where the cold packs can go." Once loaded up, the drivers leave for one of the four area zones that FoodJets services — Midtown/Downtown, East Sacramento, Arden or Natomas.

14

Sacramento Lifestyle | April 2016

Then from 11am to 1:30pm Monday through Friday or 5pm to 8:30pm seven nights a week, customers can order their meal through FoodJets' app. Depending on how close a driver is, delivery can sometimes be very quick. "We've done tons of deliveries now and we've had many under a minute or two minutes because the customer pushed the button (on the app) and the driver happened to be driving just outside," McAdams says. After placing an order, customers can track their driver or just wait for the automated "curb" call or text they'll receive when their driver is two minutes out. Customers then meet the driver at the curb where they're handed their meal. In addition to purchasing meals for themselves, customers can opt to Donate-A-Meal to Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services. "For just $4 you get to buy someone a meal, and so every day we have dozens of people doing that — they can make a difference with the push of a button," McAdams adds. Additionally, at the end of each day FoodJets donates their extra meals to the food bank. Looking towards the future of FoodJets, McAdams says they listen to what their customers ask for and so far are planning to add online ordering as an option and also expand their delivery area to other Sacramento area communities. For more information and to download their app, visit FoodJets.com.

lark Kent flies. Peter Parker scales buildings. And Bruce Wayne has the utility belt and drives one sweet car. Fourteen-year-old Christian Beecher may not have radioactive powers or top-secret, high-tech gadgets, but on February 1st he became a super hero to his neighbors all the same. The Sacramento Charter High School honor student was relaxing on his front porch in Oak Park when he and his aunt, Ebboni Johnson, spotted flames and smelled gas coming from a neighbor's home. Beecher and his aunt sprung into action. They knocked on the neighbor's door and found the Alay family panicked inside. The Alay's special needs daughter, who has trouble walking, was especially scared. Beecher helped hurry the girl and her family out of the burning house. Flames were spreading quickly, and Beecher worried for the elderly lady

“Christian exhibits integrity, discipline and grit on a daily basis; that is most likely how he was able to act so quickly and help those in need.” nextdoor. He often helps her on trash day because he knows she can't get around so easily. After hopping a gated fence, Beecher found the woman alone inside and unaware of the looming danger. He escorted her outside and brought the rescued neighbors — six in all — into his grandparents' home to keep warm while firefighters extinguished the blaze. Beecher's quick thinking and selfless actions have everyone from Mayor Kevin Johnson to the Sacramento City Fire Departent praising the young man's heroic deed. "What he did involved danger. He made a calculated risk and we applaud his actions," said Sacramento City Fire spokesman Chris Harvey. At Sac High, students and teachers regard the slim 6-foot freshman as something of a real-life action hero, said Janine Knill, Beecher's advisory teacher. And yet, Knill added, those heroic actions weren't too surpsing given Beecher has the “makings of a leader.”

"Christian exhibits integrity, discipline and grit on a daily basis; that is most likely how he was able to act so quickly and help those in need," Knill said. The polite teen perks up at being called a leader. "I am a leader! I don't just follow the crowd." To that point, he lists focusing on his academics and spending time with his family as his interests. "My favorite subject is math, not because it's easy. I like figuring out problems." In addition to his regular coursework, Beecher attends College Track Sacramento with hopes of earning a spot at UCLA after high school. He wants to be an architect. He also recently began putting his fence-hopping skills to an athletic purpose: jumping hurdles on the track and field team for the Sac High Dragons. Proud “Nana” Toni Johnson knows her grandson can tackle any hurdles that come his way. “He's such a good kid. He has all the tools to succeed." Cape and alter ego not required.

W

hether it’s digging in the soil to plant fruits and vegetables or journaling about the changes they see in the garden, students throughout Sacramento are busy experiencing science firsthand, while at the same time growing in ways a classroom activity or textbook may not accomplish alone. School gardens are naturally a place where students can experience the outdoors while being taught a wide array of academic disciplines, including science, math and nutrition. And teachers are discovering that the garden is often an ideal platform for social emotional learning (SEL), which focuses on strengthening students’ abilities to understand, manage and express the social and emotional aspects of their lives.

18

Sacramento Lifestyle | April 2016

In turn, teachers in the Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD) and in the San Juan Unified School District (SJUSD) are finding that the results of the garden programs are countless.

Learning for Life

LEARNING FOR LIFE

For the past decade, Shannon Hardwicke, a garden educator, has been working at six schools in SCUSD to bring the garden programs to life. She has been an employee of Soil Born Farms for the past five years and her role includes developing a garden curriculum plan and fundraising methods, and training teachers, administration and volunteers. While every campus has its own culture and every garden operates a little differently, she has seen common results when it comes

to the skills the children are gaining, and explains that the garden allows for “curiosity, compassion, choice, teamwork, endurance, handwork, patience, leadership and gratitude” — all key SEL terms. “I find that it is a palate that can be used for almost any focus and the kids are so engaged when they are in the garden that it brings that learning to life,” Hardwicke adds. One of the most significant skills that she has seen emerging from the garden curriculum is the skill of observation. Students are encouraged to sit in the garden for a few minutes, noticing colors, smells, insects, sounds, feelings and shapes. These observations lead to poetry, diagrams, art and detailed responses in the students’ journals.

Hardwicke has found that everything about caring for a garden is mindful, a keyword in regards to SEL. Being conscious — or aware of something — comes into play when students pay attention to the health and success of their gardens. They are amazed to see the new birds, butterflies and bees that are also present in the garden. The students are mindful of the ecosystem they helped create, and in turn, this leads to being mindful of their specific jobs in the garden. “Everyone realizes they actually have a role and responsibility, and they can contribute in some way,” says Hardwicke. “When they start to realize that and sense that, it’s really empowering.”

A Natural Outlet A NATURAL OUTLET

Brian Crawford, a preparation teacher working at O.W. Erlewine Elementary School in the same district, views the garden program as a natural outlet to let kids be kids and sees the same SEL skills being strengthened among the students. He has worked in the school garden for the past seven years. Situated very close to the American River, the students at this school have access to an extensive half-acre, 50-year-old nature area next to the campus’ 4,000-square-foot garden. Normal circle time for these kids means sitting on huge stumps under an umbrella of beautiful trees. Crawford believes that “we are somewhat programmed to have a relationship with soil, dirt and nature” and he teaches the students that life just wants to be, hoping that they will file away a respect for nature. He sees the excitement in his students when they taste the edible cherries on the Prunus ilicifolia bush, an evergreen shrub along the nature trail, or eat two or three pea pods from the garden at once. They are eager to get their hands in the dirt and discover insects, and thrilled at the chance to use gardening tools. Teamwork and endurance were the driving force behind a major project that Crawford completed with the kids — spreading 17 yards of decomposed granite in the nature area. “Every kid wants to be useful,” says Crawford. “I look at this as if they are

to go visit the caterpillar because like in Crawford’s class, insects are the hot topic. “I think there is a deeper understanding that goes beyond just what you tell them,” says Harr, who encourages students to try the green onions and has to keep a close eye on the popular mint plant. “It’s something that can’t be replaced with a lecture and activity.” While students are busy developing educational, emotional and physical skills in the garden, they are innately seeing, hearing and experiencing the natural wonders of the environment. They are gaining a sense of how important it is to take care of the earth, both on their campus and beyond.

Not too far down the road, the science teacher at Pasadena Avenue Elementary School (in SJUSD), Julie Harr, is engineering hand pollinators with her second and third graders. A former biology teacher, Harr has found that the pollinator project gives the kids a chance to collaborate and continually test materials and improve what they engineer. Each grade level has its own planter box, giving the students a sense of ownership, and everyone helps to make sure the garden’s needs are met. Harr has found that many instances that occur in the garden create opportunities for conversations, and if a student discovers a caterpillar, everyone has

e know from the musical Annie that “you’re never fully dressed without a smile.” Offering personalized orthodontic care for children, teens and adults, Kelly Giannetti, D.M.D. and Thais Booms, D.D.S. have been in the “smile” business in the Sacramento region for 17 years. Their goal is to make sure the customer has a great experience. Giannetti and Booms, Board certified orthodontic specialists, believe in building good relationships with their patients and their families, and they stress how important a smile can be for a person’s well-being. A recent survey conducted by the American Dental Association reveals that people with straight teeth are perceived as successful,

healthy and happy. Booms says that “our teeth are constantly on show, so it’s important for us to be happy and confident with them. A great smile is universally attractive.” Giannetti says that “the age of seven is the magic age” to first consult with an orthodontist. Giannetti and Booms not only offer free consultation, but no referral from a dentist is necessary. They follow up every six months and monitor the child’s growth, both physically and socially, to determine the best timing for braces, with a goal to complete treatment before the child starts high school. Giannetti and Booms strive to design a treatment that works not only for the patient, but for the family as well. For adults who didn’t have the opportunity to get their teeth straightened earlier in life, Giannetti says “it’s never too late.” Both doctors recommend Invisalign, a great option for adults that don’t want traditional braces. Invisalign uses a custom-made series of clear plastic aligners to gradually and gently shift teeth into place. There are no metal brackets or wires to tighten. CONTINUED >

Using innovative technology in their operation, 3D scans take the place of traditional molds. Giannetti and Booms have their own in-house lab to make appliances, which saves time and money, while maintaining control over quality. Happy, satisfied customers are the end goal. The philosophy and business approach is to build lasting relationships with their clients and their self-described theme is “beautiful smiles — lasting relationships.” The business’ website shares many success stories from their clients and Yelp is full of rave reviews from past patients. But the best testimony comes directly from one of their patients, Deb Kubin. She went through treatment with Invisalign and says “I love my smile again.” She recommends

Giannetti and Booms for adults and children alike. Kubin says “they obviously take great pride in their work and have a lot of fun while doing it.” April Melarkey, another satisfied patient and mother of patients, says it was the best investment her family has ever made. Melarkey says straight teeth “boost the kid’s confidence and it’s important to have a good smile.” Giannetti and Booms have two locations: 2650 21st Street, Suite 8, Sacramento, CA 95818 and 2101 Stone Blvd., Suite 130, West Sacramento, CA 95691. Or visit their website at SacOrtho.com to request an appointment. 75th Anniversary Edition 3.6L V6 gasoline engine 18mpg city, 25mpg highway, 21mpg combined Listed MSRP: $46,560 April Lease Deal: $499 per month plus tax for 36 months, $2,995 due at signing. ince 1941, Jeep has been making vehicles geared towards getting things done. With a constant eye towards ruggedness and capability beyond what most cars could be reasonably asked to accomplish, Jeep has always excelled at making vehicles that can do much more than you will ever demand from them. The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 75th Anniversary Edition, even from your first glance at its burly exterior, reassures you that it won't fall short of expectations. Bronze front grille and wheels replace the chrome found on the standard vehicle, giving the five-seater an even more serious and businesslike demeanor. Our test car was finished in Granite Crystal Metallic paint, which has a vibrant metallic flake that added to the car's tough presence. And Trail-Rated and commemorative badging advertise the car's proven capabilities and history. The 4x4 we drove was powered by a 3.6L V6 gasoline engine, though a 3.0L V6 EcoDiesel and — for those who insist on having the ultimate in power — a 5.7L HEMI V8 are also available. All are mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission, which can be left to choose gears by itself or you can use the steering wheel-mounted paddles. Fuel economy for our car was rated at 18mpg city/25mpg highway, 21mpg combined. Range should be over 250 miles per tank of gas. Acceleration was very responsive — it picks up speed quickly, and drives like a car that is much smaller than it is. The ride is firm but 26

Sacramento Lifestyle | April 2016

surprisingly comfortable. A full complement of airbags and accident avoidance systems are standard. There are many features that owners will be able to use daily, such as the air suspension system which make ingress and egress from the high-riding vehicle easier, as well as automatic rideheight adjustment to provide better aerodynamics on freeways. It works quickly and the on-board systems can manage it without driver interaction. Speaking of on-board systems, the car has a great array of electronic gadgetry to keep you engaged, impressed and ready for any task you have on hand. Driver assistance systems that include rock, sand, snow and mud settings, sharp-angle assistance — both uphill and downhill — make the more daunting off-road adventures much more manageable and stress-free. For city-living owners, parallel parking assistance, self-opening and closing tailgate, and remote keyless entry will be everyday blessings. With all of its pedigree and capabilities, you'd think that the interior might have been once place that Jeep didn't go the distance, but you'd be mistaken. The interior of the Grand Cherokee Limited is an absolute haven. Supple, supportive leather seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel make you feel right at home. Contrast stitching on the seats, armrests and other interior surfaces are a luxurious touch that I didn't expect, but thoroughly

enjoyed. Center console buttons were all very clearly marked, and the temperature controls were a breeze to use. The built-in navigation/infotainment system was easy to see, even in direct sunlight. Up to nine Bluetooth devices can be connected to the infotainment system. For audiophiles, a 19-speaker HarmonKardon system is available, and there is an option to add dual DVDplayers behind the front seats for your rear-seat passengers. Equally impressive was the LCD screen which comprises the central part of the driver's gauge cluster. That screen can show a whole slew of statistics, from individual tire pressures to fuel economy to trip information. Controls for that area are conveniently located on the steering wheel, on the opposite side of the wheel from the cruise control buttons. Rear-seat passengers will be pleased to find USB connections, temperature control vents, and even a full 115V connector, perfect for connecting a laptop. Like those in the front row, heated rear seats will keep all passengers in great comfort as you travel. Behind the second row is very ample storage and the rear seats fold forward to create an even larger, level storage area which includes tie-downs and raised rails to prevent carpet damage when moving larger objects around. Overall, the 75h Anniversary Edition Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited is a pleasure to drive, will easily handle what all but the most extreme drivers will ask of it, and will keep you safe and comfortable all the while. Its versatility, proven drivetrain, fuel economy and luxury make it a top-notch option for those looking for a great all-around vehicle with proper off-road chops.

Give Back Time to

WORDS CORRIE PELC | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

A

s a freelance writer and editor of this local Sacramento magazine, unfortunately I don't have a lot of free time. And when I do find myself with a few extra minutes in the day, they're normally spent cleaning the house, food shopping, or getting in some exercise to help keep myself healthy so I can keep up with my life's hectic pace. Many of you have the same story I do where one crazy day just blends into the next and there never seems to be enough hours in the day to get everything done. A few months ago when 2015 started to come to a close, I took a moment to really look at my busy life and realized I was no longer making time for something I've always loved to do — volunteering. I've been a volunteer all my life. It all started when I volunteered as a "candy striper" at a local hospital when I was a young teenager and continued into junior and high school as I gave up time hanging with friends to tutor younger students. As an adult, my volunteer work has spanned from socializing kitties at Happy Tails and the Sacramento SPCA to helping elementary school students improve their reading skills through Reading Partners.

34

Sacramento Lifestyle | April 2016

I've offered pro bono marketing and public relations work to the fundraising arm of the Sacramento County Animal Shelter, and I was on the board of The Volunteer Center of Sacramento for many years. For me, volunteering makes me whole. It allows me to fulfill a deep-down need I have to help others. I love being able to use my skills in ways that benefit not just myself, but so many others. Volunteering is such a stress reliever for me — being able to focus on just one fuzzy kitty or one reading student has a calming effect. And volunteering has helped me learn so much, both about myself and the world around me. If you've ever considered volunteering, now is the perfect time to start as National Volunteer Week is this month, April 10-16. And there are tons of ways to give back in Sacramento, from large national nonprofits to local community organizations. Ask your child's teacher how you can help at their school or contact an organization that speaks to you and see what help they need.

To get you started, here are some resources for finding volunteering opportunities here in Sacramento: City of Sacramento Volunteer Program — Find volunteer opportunities online and sign up for their volunteer email for upcoming needs. 916.808.8317 or CityOfSacramento.org VolunteerMatch — Search their online database by location, cause areas and more, or have opportunities based on your interest areas emailed to you. VolunteerMatch.org Hands On Superior California — Search their database for volunteer opportunities in your local area, as well as special event needs. HandsOnSuperiorCal.org And remember, you don’t have to have tons of extra time to volunteer. Even if you only have one hour a month to spare, every bit counts! Get out there and make a difference!
