he first wealth is health," Ralph Waldo Emerson.

PUBLICATION DIRECTOR

My dad, who's in his early 80's said, his 60's went by fast, and the 70's even faster. That tells me, time is of the essence. 2017 is here, and with the New Year comes a time for healthy resolutions. And why not? With health comes happiness, because when we feel good, we're happy.

This issue is all about health and happiness. Go out and get some fresh air, swim in the ocean, walk on the beach trail, make healthy choices at meal time. And always remember, the decisions we make have an accumulative effect, one good choice after another, as they add up, we reap the benefits. However, the new year shouldn't be all about physical health as it so often is. Instead, take this starting point as an opportunity to improve our emotional health, to maintain or improve the relationships in our live's and the chance to enrich our life by getting involved in things that are important to us. When we change inside, the world around us changes. A great start is by being kind and forgiving to everything and everyone, including ourselves, at all times, without exception. Here at Lifestyle Publications, we're all about community. And, in 2017, we encourage you to be all about it, too!

Mind - Body

Wellness ARTICLE ALEXA ERICKSON

W

e’ve long known the importance of exercise for our physical wellbeing, but in recent years, much emphasis has been put on the way in which it affects mental wellbeing, too. In our incredibly fast-paced world, people have been advised to take a step back from the go-go-go and focus inward. Research shows that your mood, outlook and stress levels significantly affect your overall health, including heart health. Engaging in stress-reducing exercises and mind-body exercises can help tone you up and keep you tuned in from the inside out to keep diseases at bay, while also boosting the mood, improving focus, improving fitness and increasing overall life satisfaction. These mind-body activities will satisfy many types of personalities while promoting a healthy lifestyle.

YOGA The ancient practice of yoga originated in India with attention paid to what to do and not do, how to relate with ourselves and others, how to sit, breathe, withdraw, focus, concentrate, meditate, and of course, enlighten. In the Western world today, it’s created a huge draw for its ability to improve flexibility, promote better sleep quality, boost self-confidence and promote mindfulness. With research exposing how stress and anxiety can make you physically sick, it’s pertinent to not just be aware of how to ease the mind but put it into action. Yoga styles range from a passive yin, which involves variations of seated and supine poses typically held for 3 to 5 minutes, accessing deeper layers of fascia, to power yoga, a fitness-based vinyasa practice that builds internal heat, increases stamina, strength and flexibility, the practice allows people to focus on the important connection of the mind and body. In an overview of 26 systematic reviews, published in Evidence Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, British researchers found that regular yoga practice resulted in a reduction of depression pain and anxiety in adults with various acute and chronic health conditions, including back pain, fibromyalgia, and psychiatric disorders. 20

San Clemente Lifestyle | January 2017

BARRE METHOD The barre trend has certainly heated up in the last decade or so, originating as a ballet barre training class with rehabilitative therapy in 1959 by Lotte Berke. But the exercise has gone from a workout geared toward nimble dancer-types to something fitness fiends everywhere are flocking to. There’s no tap shoes, leotards or fancy footwork incorporated, just a focus on fundamental moves. Classes typically incorporate a mat-based warm-up of planks and pushups, a series of arm exercises, time spent at the bar focusing on the thighs and glutes, and then core-focused moves back on the mat. A barre class not only tones and tightens, but the smaller movements promote awareness to the body, improving muscular activation for underused muscles by way of strengthening the mind-body connection.

SOULCYCLE When we think of workout classes, a stress-free environment doesn’t always come to mind, with people filtering in in a frenzy as loud music plays. But SoulCycle isn’t just another busy cycling class. Though there’s plenty of energy, from the music to the pedaling, the lights remain dimmed, there’s candlelight. Riders come to clear their heads while also pushing their physical bodies to the max and instructors use positive affirmations to soothe and inspire the soul while directing students to dig deeper, close their eyes, be present and set intentions. Riders are often SoulCycle devotees who thrive in a spiritual fitness environment.

DEEP BREATHING When it comes to mind-body practices, deep, slow and intentional breathing is one of the best things you can do for reducing stress and anxiety, thereby lessening the likelihood of other ailments and diseases. It’s also the basis of all of these mind-body exercises. Simply sitting and taking five big deep breaths, with focus on the deep inhale and exhale, the body releases stress and ultimately calms the mind down. Research even shows that breathing exercises can have immediate effects by altering the pH of the blood, or changing blood pressure.

THAI CHI A moving meditation, Thai Chi is based on the ancient Chinese philosophy of Taoism, which stresses the natural balance in all things and the need for living in spiritual and physical accord with the patterns of nature. The practice consists of exercises equally balanced between yin and yang to promote this essential balance. Through mental concentration, practitioners move slowly and deliberately to focus the mind, challenge the body and improve the flow of “chi,” or life energy. The practice also has incredibly beneficial outcomes, like the ability to improve heart function, decrease blood pressure and reduce stress. A 2010 systematic review in the journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine even found that Tai Chi was effective in reducing stress, anxiety, depression and mood disturbance, while also boosting self-esteem.

QOYA Rochelle Schiek, who founded this mind-body exercise that combines yoga, dance and sensual movement, calls Qoya ”a shift in consciousness through movement.” Classes incorporate traditional benefits of fitness, like strength, flexibility, balance, endurance and agility training with a unique empowering approach. Together, the various techniques nourish the soul while working the body. Qoya, which is a tribal word for “queen,” is designed for women to embrace their inner goddesses, induce self-love, build strength, and expand the ability to release what no longer serves you.

PILATES Joseph Hubertus Pilates had asthma and other ailments as a child, and turned to exercise and athletics to battle these ailments, making sure to continuously study various exercise regimens to find what best optimized his health. His fascination with the classical Greek ideal of a man balanced in body, mind, and spirit ultimately caused him to develop his own exercise system based on this concept, which is what we now refer to as Pilates. This form of exercise, which incorporates mat-based moves, has been shown to increase flexibility, build core strength, improve posture and alleviate lower-back pain. Similar to yoga, Pilates links movement to breath, which enhances your mind-body connection, allowing for a reduction in stress while also strengthening the physical body. Pilates requires full attention on your body, which in turn causes you to clear your mind of any distractions whether you are on the mat or the Reformer.

ong ago, a stillroom was an essential part of rural homes. Here, herbs, jars, recipe books, tinctures, teas and preserving agents were stored for people to

create cosmetics, home brews, preserves and natural remedies from scratch. Today, we are tied up with life’s long list of priorities and have very little room or time for even making dinner, never mind making natural remedies! But there’s something incredibly powerful about doing so and that is having full control over knowing what you are putting on and in your body. Making your own natural remedies is a great alternative to overspending on storebought options that are often times filled with controversial ingredients. Plus, you may be surprised at just how easy it is to whip up a remedy for everything from a headache to a hair treatment.

For sore muscles, joint pain and arthritis: Try an Epsom salt soak, which contains magnesium sulfate —a naturally occurring mineral that has been used to get relief from pain for years. 1. Take a bath with Epsom salt by running a tub full of warm water. 2. Add 2 cups of Epsom salt. 3. Soak for at least 15 minutes. 24

Remedies For the hair: Rosemary has long been considered an effective herb for treating the hair. 1. Make a rosemary hair rinse by mixing 2 tablespoons of dried rosemary leaves with one quart of water. 2. Bring to a boil, cover and turn off the heat. 3. Once 30 minutes have passed, strain and use as a hair rinse by pouring over clean, wet hair. There’s no need to wash out. For the teeth: Try oil pulling! It’s an age-old practice that works to reduce cavities, bleeding gums and bad breath by cleaning the mouth of harmful bacteria. 1. Put 1 tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth. 2. Swish it around for about 20 minutes. 3. Spit it out. 4. Rinse your mouth out with warm water. 5. Brush your teeth.

Cold and Flu Fighters Elderberry Cough Syrup: This homemade recipe is made with 1 cup fresh or 1/2 cup dried organic elderberries, 3 cups water, 1 cup raw local honey, 1 organic cinnamon stick, 3 organic whole cloves and organic ginger. 1. Place berries, water, and spices in a saucepan. 2. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes or until a syrupy thickness. 3. Smash the berries to release remaining juice and strain the mixture. Allow liquid to cool. 4. Stir in raw honey once it has cooled. Turmeric Cold and Flu Tonic: Try this cold and flu fighting tonic using ¼ cup fresh ginger root, ¼ cup fresh turmeric root, 1 orange, peeled, 1 lemon, peeled, and water, honey and ghee/coconut oil as needed. 1. Place all ingredients through your juicer. 2. Mix 1oz of concentrated mix with 1 cup of hot water. Stir in raw honey, ghee or coconut oil. 3. Sip and repeat every 2 hours. Saltwater Gargle: A saltwater gargle works to loosen things up during a nasty cold. Just use 1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon salt and one cup of pure water. 1. Mix. 2. Stir. 3. Put a little of the gargle in your mouth, tilt your head back and extend your tongue to allow the gargle to wash away the mucus. Hop-Infused Body Oil: Hops Essential Oil is best known as a sedative with tranquilizing effects. 1. Choose one or more base oil(s) like cold-pressed vegetable oils, nut oils and seed oils to dilute the essential oil. 2. Mix 60 drops of essential oil into the 100 ml of base oil. 3. Apply generously to the skin. Cold-Busting Ginger Chicken Noodle Soup: The aroma alone is enough to make you feel better! 1. Make the stock from scratch by combining 1 (4-pound) chicken, 3 medium carrots, peeled and sliced, 2 medium yellow onions, quartered, 2 stalks celery, sliced, 1 head garlic, smashed, 1 (2-inch) piece fresh ginger, sliced, 10 sprigs thyme and 12 cups water in a large stockpot and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until chicken is fully cooked and meat is falling off the bone, about 1 hour. 2. Remove chicken from the pot and set aside to cool; strain the stock, discarding the vegetables. When chicken is cool enough to handle, remove skin and shred the chicken into 1/2-inch-wide pieces. Discard skin and bones and reserve meat. 3. Return the stock to the stockpot and add 2 medium carrots, small dice, 2 stalks celery, small dice, 1 small yellow onion, small dice; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until vegetables are tender, about 7 minutes. Return shredded chicken to the soup. 4. Bring a pot of salted water to a boil over high heat. Add 1 pound dry egg noodles and simmer until almost completely cooked, about 4 minutes; drain noodles. 5. Add cooked noodles to the soup and season with salt and freshly ground pepper. 26

5 H eal t h y Fo o d s to Hel p You ReNew This Year! ARTICLE ALEXA ERICKSON

The great Hippocrates once said: “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food,” and it’s a statement we should live by.

The typical American diet is ridden with acid-forming foods such as refined grains, processed sugars, artificial sweeteners, processed meats and dairy. These foods are deadly, with research linking them to long-term health risks like liver and kidney damage, obesity, diabetes and cancer. Food is an incredibly vital part of our lives, but in our modern day society, we no longer have the luxury of eating without thinking. We must know what’s in our foods, and how they affect us, to ensure we are not damaging our health. However, this is often much easier said than done. So where does one start? Eating from the ground up is one of the best ways to begin. That is, steering clear of the man-made world as much as possible by choosing whole foods, which are unprocessed and unrefined, or processed and refined as little as possible, over anything else. Another important thing to acknowledge is keeping the body in balance by maintaining a healthy pH value. The pH value refers to the measure of how acidic or alkaline something is, and ranges from 0 to 14, with 0-7 being acidic, 7 being neutral and 7 to 14 being alkaline. Different foods fall in different places on this scale, however, with meat, poultry, fish, dairy, eggs, grains and alcohol all considered to be acidic, while natural fats, starches and sugars are neutral, and fruits, nuts, legumes and vegetables are alkaline. 28

We must eat both acidic and alkaline-forming foods to achieve balance since the stomach is naturally highly acidic to break down food and the human blood is naturally slightly alkaline. Acid-forming foods and alkaline-forming foods refer to how the body breaks down the foods we eat, regardless of their organic acidic or alkaline state. Foods inorganic matter, like calcium, magnesium and potassium, decides how the body responds. When too many acid-forming foods are consumed, the nutrients the body needs to achieve its slightly alkaline state are canceled out, resulting in the body reaching out to the bones and tissues for help. This ultimately throws off the detoxification process, resulting in a backup of harmful toxins that make our bodies susceptible to disease. The following five foods are alkaline-forming and rich in powerful antioxidants — substances that are an important part of the diet as they can reduce the chances of cancer, lower high blood pressure, improve wrinkles, help your heart stay healthy and so much more. 1. COCONUT OIL

With a variety of health benefits, this alkaline-forming food is rich in iron, vitamin C and calcium. It’s also been linked to weight loss, better brain function and skin health. It’s recommended to use raw, virgin coconut oil as a supplement, as research has found that the highest amounts of antioxidants in coconut oil are found in virgin coconut oils. 2. AVOCADO

Avocado is a powerful alkaline and nutrient-dense superfood that’s loaded with a variety of nutrients that have incredible anti-inflammatory, heart health, cardiovascular health, anti-cancer, and blood sugar benefits. Avocado works to increase antioxidant absorption from other foods, and are also high in antioxidants themselves, including Lutein and Zeaxanthin, which are incredibly important for eye health. 3. SUN-DRIED OLIVES

Along with being alkaline-forming, sun-dried olives are known for their ability to increase heart health while also reducing the risk of osteoporosis, chronic inflammation and other related conditions. They’re also rich in the antioxidant vitamin E, which has anti-inflammatory polyphenols and flavonoids that aid in the restoration of body tissues, prevent infection, and decrease the risk of numerous diseases and disorders. 4. ASPARAGUS

Asparagus is among the strongest alkaline-forming foods and is often recommended as a food to eat if you are acidic. It’s also chock-full of antioxidants and nutrients, and is particularly rich in fiber, folate, vitamins A, C, E and K, and even chromium, which is a trace mineral that boosts the ability of insulin to drive glucose from the bloodstream into the cells. 5. BERRIES

Berries are highly alkaline, and also chemically react to acidic foods of pH 5.0 and boost them near the alkaline levels. They’re also high in antioxidants, benefit brain health, regulate blood pressure and brighten skin tone. Try adding goji berries, acai berries, strawberries, blackberries and cherries into your diet. Acai berries, for instance, are linked to slowing the process of aging and preventing diseases related to cellular oxidative damage.

ARTICLE EILEEN SPATZ

L

aguna Niguel has just acquired a much-needed new service for its community—an urgent care facility that specializes in assisting South County residents with mental health needs. For far too long individuals in need of emergency assistance for a psychiatric condition have had nowhere to turn. Those who have attempted to get help at a local emergency room have experienced frustration and despair, as most ERs are not equipped or staffed to address urgent mental health needs such as panic attacks, depression, phobias, substance use disorders, or bipolar disorder. Instead of receiving timely help, one may sit in the ER waiting room for hours, often while in a full-blown emotional crisis, feeling embarrassed and humiliated. When finally seen by a doctor, there is no guarantee that he or she is sufficiently trained to intervene in a mental health emergency. Access Mind Institute launched out of a real-world need that spurred emergency room physician, William Dodge, M.D., to take action. In his experience as an ER doctor, he saw a profound need for behavioral health services. Dr. Dodge witnessed firsthand the impact of a 20% increase from 2006-2011 of ER visits by adults with mental health disorders. Seeing this critical need for after-hours psychiatric services motivated him to create a walk-in facility specifically tailored to serve those with mental health needs. Partnering with Richard Granese, M.D., a highly respected South County psychiatrist, Access Mind Institute was founded. When a mental health episode presents itself, it can quickly become a crisis event. Now there is somewhere to go to get immediate assistance, potentially preventing the incident from escalating. This important new walk-in service is an amazing resource for South County communities, where a psychiatrist is readily available to immediately offer the support needed. How refreshing it is to know that help and support can be accessed after hours—help that is dedicated specifically for those experiencing an emotional crisis. Whether someone needs a brief intervention or a complete psychiatric evaluation, all incoming patients will receive immediate support from a mental health professional who can offer to counsel and prescribe medication if needed. In addition to crisis intervention, Access Mind Institute provides ongoing behavioral health counseling services. The compassionate mental health professionals at Access Mind Institute can see you between 6-10 p.m. Thursday thru Monday (closed Tuesday and Wednesday), and no appointment is necessary. Located at 30101 Town Center Drive, Suite 113, Laguna Niguel. Reach them at 949.228.2724.
