Bucket List E
ver make a bucket list and wonder how many things you'll actually check off in your lifetime? Back in January, I put “complete triathlon” at the top of my bucket list, and well, last month I finally got to cross it off. It was the best feeling, and learned some amazing lessons in the process!

YOU WILL ALWAYS BE A BEGINNER AT SOMETHING.
C.S. Ramos, Julie Maleski, Karen Totino
At age 36, I’ve participated in road races for nearly 6 years now. I can pinpoint roughly how comfortable I’m going to be at different distances and courses. But it's humbling to toe the line of a race when you know next to nothing about what to expect. And rather than stressing about how many seconds it took to tie my shoes and buckle my helmet, my goal was to finish in one piece. THE BEGINNERS NEED THE PROS.
Maybe it was the fact that my bike wasn’t exactly built for road racing, but I seemed to be climbing hills at roughly half the speed of some of the other cyclists. The amazing part was that everyone called out words of encouragement as they passed by, telling me "great job." The fact that they were willing to expend precious breath and energy to cheer me along me was encouraging. These triathletes leaving me in their dust knew where I was coming from; they had all had a first race too.

Despite training daily, there were moments during the race that I couldn’t have practiced anywhere but during the race. I felt like I was as ready as I was ever going to be, yet simultaneously hopeless in the dark. However, there wasn't any other way I could have learned to do it. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN “HAVING” TO WORK OUT AND “GETTING” TO WORK OUT.
I never dread exercise that I have a say in. When I’m not training for a race, I make the most of my freedom to mix up my workouts — or occasionally decide that sleeping another hour is more important than a trip to the gym. I appreciate the motivation of working towards an end goal, but I realized exercise, for me personally, is more sustainable when I can pick and choose what I feel like doing, rather than fearing that I will fail.

I consider myself very lucky to have a handful of supremely motivating athletic pals in my life. Whether ahead of me, beside me or just behind me, they have all pushed me to run harder, and spin faster in countless races and workouts. I couldn't have done this triathlon without their support. FLIGHT done NIGHT right D
id you know that there is a winery right in the heart of Downtown Saratoga
Springs? Well Saratoga Adventures did, and we set out to see what all the hype was about....and drink wine of course. Situated at the intersection of South Broadway & Lincoln, The Thirsty Owl is the perfect place to sit back, relax, and enjoy some nationally acclaimed wines with friends. They also have some delicious Spanish-Mediterranean & American fare, like seafood paella, crab mac & cheese, and of course some beautiful cheese boards to pair with your wine. PS- We LOVED the cheese board! The winery itself is based on the west side of Cayuga Lake. With over 150 acres of land on their family owned vineyard, Thirsty Owl offers over twenty different wines,
12

WINE TIME WITH SARATOGA ADVENTURES
such as Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. One of the great things that Thirsty Owl offers is a $5 wine tasting (yes, you heard me right- $5 wine tasting), which allows you try your pick of any of their five wines you want. We thought this would be an excellent way of sampling what they had to offer, and figured we would have a little bit of fun with it too. Covering our eyes, to really focus in on our sense of smell and taste of each wine, turned out to be both captivating, educational and HIGHLY amusing. For those of you that are not wine drinkers (I know, weird right? But there are a few of you out there), we recommend trying their White Sangria. It was the perfect blend of citrus and sweet, and extremely refreshing to boot. And those of you who prefer beer over wine, well Thirsty Owl always has a few varieties on tap. We tried the Tangerine IPA... which tasted fruity, but not too sweet, and it was absolutely delicious. Inside their beautifully renovated building (previously Kimberly's Guest House), there is plenty of room for sitting and socializing in the bar area, or you can enjoy a table, inside or out, on the covered porch or in the garden. We highly suggest trying out Thirsty Owl! Whether you're grabbing a bite to eat, tasting some wines or stocking up with a few bottles to take home, it's definitely worth a trip.

While it’s hard to really be out in the elements everyday, our ability to be comfortable at home, and enjoy the simple pleasure of stargazing, while being next to a roaring fire, is paramount. But where does one start to make this dream a reality, you ask? It’s true, people are so busy today that the simple task of looking up a good landscape developer/ manager is more akin to writing your college thesis paper all over again, than doing a general task. Thankfully, that’s where Peak Organic comes in to save the day. Peak Environmental Concepts has been in business since 1997, specializing in outdoor living spaces, landscape development, and management. If you couldn’t tell already by their name, they’ve tried to adhere their business practices towards being more environmentally friendly, and have accomplished it with flying colors.
“OUR GREEN ROOF OPTIONS NOT ONLY HAVE A CARBON CAPTURE FEATURE IN THEM THAT MANAGES STORM WATER AND LIMITS RUN OFF, BUT ALSO HELPS INSULATES ROOFS, MAKING IT 40% MORE EFFICIENT,” TERRY HUBBARD, PRESIDENT OF PEAK Terry Hubbard has been in the business for more than ORGANIC, SAYS. 20+ years, so he knows a thing or two. When not overseeing Peaks business operations, he also writes for, and maintains, a blog called OutdoorLivingPro.com (which I highly recommend you read after you read this article). It speaks to Hubbard's strength as a knowledgeable contractor and savvy designer; giving insider tips to help improve one's outdoors spaces at home. But while Peak works both in the residential and commercial field, Hubbard does admit their residential business is their mainstay. 16
Saratoga Lifestyle | October 2016
“FIRE PITS AND FIRE PLACES ARE OUR TWO MOST POPULAR REQUESTS,” HUBBARD EXPLAINS. “EVERYONE WANTS SOMETHING THAT LOOKS GREAT BUT IS LOW MAINTENANCE. WE HELP BY NOT ONLY MAKING SURE OUR PLANS ARE SETTLED BEFORE WE START, BUT BY ALSO SAVING THEM $5-10K WITH CONTRACTOR COORDINATION, AND OF COURSE BEING MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY EFFICIENT.”
Hubbard prides himself and his business on three main principles: Safety, Workmanship and Efficiency. While this might seem standard for a business to try to live up to, Hubbard's tone and words seem genuine. And when you put his experience in landscaping and outdoor space construction into account, it’s easy to see that he says what he means. And it definitely shows in their business plan. Speaking just in terms of design, Hubbard focuses on 4 main points to look at, when considering one's plans to liven up their outdoor space: Hardscapes (which reference any hard spaces outdoors), ambiance, softscapes (natural components of ones new outdoor spaces) and furnishings. While all at once it may seem like a little intimidating, he and the rest of the Peak Concepts team are willing to take it to task. The scope of work that Peak does in it's field is impressive. And when they're not helping design or install state of the art outdoor living spaces, they also offer: lawn and shrub care, pest and disease care for plant life, custom stonework (which Hubbard admits to being one of his favorite tasks), hydroseeding.... you name it. If there’s something going on outside your home and you think it needs help, improvement, or a little bit of professional insight, Peak is the business for you!! October 2016 | Saratoga Lifestyle

MISCONCEPTION #1: It’s Just Physical Abuse: Perhaps the
largest impediment to people recognizing relationship and sexual abuse is the notion that it is ALWAYS physical. While some abusive relationships involve physical abuse, very often the abuse is not physical. In reality, types of abuse include: (but are not limited to) threats, intimidation, emotional and psychological abuse, financial control, interfering with employment, limiting access to family or friends, coerced sexual activity, or exposure to STDs. MISCONCEPTION #2: I’m not Eligible: For many people ‘domes-
tic violence’ has come to mean ‘battered wives.’ To other people, domestic violence happens somewhere else, to someone else. In reality, domestic violence happens regardless of socioeco-

Wellspring services are available to ANYONE experiencing relationship abuse… wealthy, economically challenged, successful or just starting out, men, women, LGBT partners, teenagers in dating relationships, elders experiencing abuse by their partner or a family member, or anyone else. MISCONCEPTION #3: I’m not in a Crisis, so I Don’t Need Help:
Economic & Financial
Many people in abusive relationships hesitate to get help because they compare what they are experiencing to 'stereotypes' or 'worst-case scenarios'. However, someone doesn’t need to be in 'crisis'. They don’t have to be planning to leave to receive services from Wellspring. We are available to share information about the dynamics of domestic violence and sexual assault, and the options available to address someone’s specific needs.

that you personally don’t need to have experienced the abuse to access our services. All of our services are available to anyone who is concerned because someone in their life has been abused. If you’re concerned about a loved one who may be experiencing abuse, we can help you understand the dynamics of abuse, what services are available, and how to safety plan if needed. We can help you work through your feelings so you are able to support your friend or family member as accordingly.

MISCONCEPTION #5: Wellspring Can Only Respond After
Abuse Begins: At Wellspring, we know that working to be a visible, accessible organization is the key to our vision of a community, free of relationship and sexual abuse. For the past decade, we have been working to provide a wide range of prevention and education programs, at no cost to schools and community organizations in our county, with the goal of creating social change and stopping crises before they happen.

WELLSPRING (CON TI N U ED)
Our goal with all of these programs is to fundamentally change the way people and society think about these issues, and how they affect our loved ones—to help create real social change, where people know they don’t have to live in fear, and more importantly, our society will no longer accept or tolerate domestic violence or sexual assault.
More recently, Wellspring has invested in other innovative programs such as a partnership with the Saratoga Springs Police, and co-located positions at Saratoga County colleges and high schools. We invested in creating new videos and infographics to help people learn about, and share, easy to understand messages about our important work. Our goal with all of these programs is to fundamentally change the way people and society think about these issues, and how they affect our loved ones—to help create real social change, where people know they don’t have to live in fear, and more importantly, our society will no longer accept or tolerate domestic violence or sexual assault. Wellspring cares very deeply about our community. We know that it takes just one person to make a difference in the lives of victims of domestic violence or sexual assault.

Fall Decorating Ideas Designs That Will Last You All Season ARTICLE JULIE MALESKI
22
Saratoga Lifestyle | October 2016
I I
love, love, love fall. Who doesn’t? The humidity of summer is gone, but it’s still warm; the kids go back to school, and we can break out and wear layering pieces without sweating and smelling like a barn animal. AND with that comes Fall Decorating!!! I get so excited to decorate the house for fall. I love the colors, the smells, everything. I am so excited to decorate for all the different events once September hits, however it can be stressful. By stressful, I mean for Halloween, I want to decorate fancy and classy, and spooky, and traditional, with pumpkins all at the same time. How do you decide what to use, when you are eclectic and love it all? That, my friends, is what this article is all about! So let’s start with the basics. It’s the end of August and all the stores have Halloween costumes, fall decor and are marketing for apple pies. Have you dug out and cleaned your crock pot yet? Naturally, fall decorating is the SECOND thing on my mind, right after I finish the back to school shopping. So to get the most out of your fall decor right through Thanksgiving and into the Christmas (yep, I said it) season, here is my recipe for perfect seasonal decorating. No matter what project I am working on, we need a plan and a great foundation. Decorating is no different. I am going to give you a step by step system to make sure your decorating lasts all season with tweaks along the way. Feel free to adjust as you see fit. After all, it is YOUR home. For your foundation, let’s identify the basic elements; color, texture, and shape. These three items will make sure your décor is well rounded and malleable to the changing themes for the remainder of the year. First up is color, and it sounds like an obvious one, but it can spiral away from you quickly. Those holding multiple mini jars of paint, I’m talking to you. The basic colors for fall are warm in nature; mossy or olive greens, rich caramel and rust, marigold and mustard yellows. To set the tone for your fall décor until December, identify which color you are drawn to the most. Browns-you like weathered wood, tree bark, and mosses. Gold-you like straw, hay bales, and corn stalks. Reds-you like maple leaves, plaid, and red barns. Any of these three colors can go with your personal style (modern, rustic, contemporary) right now we are identifying a foundation to build your style around. Yes, it is ok if you like and want to decorate with all of those colors. Now let’s talk about textures. Texture is often the overlooked element standing between good and great. Any interior I design I certainly play on opposing textures to develop the layers of a room.
No matter what project I am working on, from working with a
client on their new construction home, to helping them pick their paint colors for a remodel, we need a plan and a great foundation. Decorating is no different. I am going to give you a step by step system to make sure your decorating lasts all season, with tweaks along the way. Feel free to adjust as you see fit. After all, it is YOUR home.

FALL DECORATING IDEAS (CON TI N U ED)
And it ALWAYS gets noticed. Here is where your personal style comes into the spotlight. Basic textures include rough, smooth, and soft. Rough textures are items like tree bark, hay bales, and corn stalks. Smooth textures include pumpkins, apples, and galvanized buckets or other planters. Soft textures are the luxuries of the fall, wool blankets, and cotton on the stems, mums, and pillows. The third and final element is shape. Shape can be any combination of the above mentioned items. It is literally the SHAPE we are concerned about here. Think outside the box with me for a minute. Don’t just identify parochial shapes; think also about delineation and scale. Corn stalks, yes they are rectangle, but they have a lot of vertical lines to them. Mums or cabbage are great examples. They are round, but they have varying layers of waves and circles. Think in opposites and balance those elements. Ok, let’s put it all together at this point. Remember, I am just giving examples of traditional fall décor. If you are a “march to your own beat” type of person….by all means decorate with metallic purple pumpkins. I want you to imagine how you personally decorate for each holiday throughout the fall. What do you use year after year? What is your favorite decoration? Ok, hold on to those thoughts and input them here. Start with your basic fall element, hay bale, corn stalks, or mums. Congratulations friend, you have a foundation! Now we will look at building on that and using the outline about (Color, Texture, and Shape) to balance what you have. What we are trying to achieve is HOW to create a basic backdrop for you to add and remove items throughout the fall and into winter, without disturbing your foundation. It makes fall décor a snap once you get the hang of it. Here is a specific example. I love mums and hay bales. So I have my gold (hay bale) and my red (mums) as colors for my foundation. Now, it’s September, so I will use dried sunflowers, decorative pillows and candles in lanterns as my accent pieces. Then it’s October, so I keep my mums and hay bales, but I take out the other items and add pumpkins, black crows, or other Halloween specific items. So I am consistently using the color, texture, and shape system. Now, we get into Thanksgiving. Perhaps my mums didn’t quite make it or I need to get new ones. That’s ok; I still have my hay bales. The focus will shift from Halloween items, into fall leaves, plaid blankets, and cornucopias. The point is start with a strong foundation of items that easily rotate to the particular holiday and/or season and you can be changing your décor in no time at all. Another tip and this is specifically for those who do not have a lot of space….I didn’t forget about you. What if you have a particularly small entrance and it doesn’t allow room for the above ideas? You can still use these ideas INSIDE! Also, search online for fall wedding centerpieces. Centerpieces have to deliver a powerful impact in very small real estate. So a lot of the ideas and displays that are used for them can work amazingly well in your home. They are relatively inexpensive, easy to complete, and easy to change. As I mentioned earlier, this is just a basic rule of thumb for going from one season into the next. How creative you go is up to you. Keep a neutral foundation, use color, texture, and shape to balance your display, and the end result will be sure to receive compliments. 24

fter only 8 years working in Real Estate, Jennifer Johnson’s resume is quite impressive. She is the recipient of Saratoga Today’s “Best of Saratoga Region” award for Real Estate, consecutively from 2013-2015, and was the 2015 top producer out of 250 agents at Keller Williams Capital District. When she began in Real Estate at the end of 2008, her family and friends were surprised, given the shaky conditions of the real estate market, along with the volatile mortgage industry at the time. She too had her doubts, but after being home for the past 8 years raising her two young sons, Jenn felt the desire to contribute financially to her growing family. She knew statistically the odds were stacked against her, and as she learned in her real estate training class at Manfred Learning Center, out of 30 students there, only 1 would succeed in real estate as a full time career. But this was a challenge she was eager to accept. A challenge that would include integrating herself back into the working world after being away from it for the past 8 years. One of her main concerns from the start was how she was going to be able to juggle work and home, so that her family would not have to sacrifice. Initially, she had plans to work on her career while her boys were at school, then neatly pack that away, greet them off the bus and devote the rest of the evening to them. She quickly learned that the demands of her growing business could overlap, and eventually take over her family life if she let it. This delicate balance between work and home is still something she struggles with today. However, she has found peace in the understanding that, to be a working professional, as well as a mom, and all the roles she plays as a woman, it is impossible to do each 100% to everyone’s expectation, all of the
time. Instead, she focuses on doing her best. And like all moms (professional, stay at home or both) she tries not to worry about how she is falling short. Instead she has stayed dedicated to the daily juggle of her career and home, to provide opportunities for her family, both short and long term, that couldn’t be offered otherwise. Her hard work has offered her family a comfortable living, and the opportunity for vacations, private schooling for her children, and a lake house where her family can enjoy time together. The years of her hard work and constant self-evaluation on how she could improve, have paid off. She now sees herself as the woman she always wanted to be. Successfully relating and communicating with people during the most stressful times of their lives has become one of her best skills in Real Estate. Before choosing to stay home with her children, Jenn worked in the software and wireless industry. Although she did not have any prior experience building her own business, she did have plenty of experience in home buying. Before her oldest son had turned 5 years old, she and her husband had relocated 4 times between military and corporate re-locations. She believes these experiences gave her a better understanding of the Real Estate industry. Real Estate transactions are typically due to some difficult life transitions. Tumultuous life experiences, compounded with a large financial decision, leads people to seek professional help. From being newly married or needing a larger home for the addition of a baby, to downsizing after a divorce or loss of a loved one. Whatever the issue, an overloaded person needs an experienced and compassionate realtor they can trust, and look to for guidance. Jenn gently walks each client through these challenges, while guiding them smoothly through the process of buying or selling a home. Jenn is still a bit amazed by all her achievements, but it is something she has earned through hard work and dedication, and by helping each client through their unique situations. She feels the most rewarding part of her job are the connections she has made, and the opportunity to assist clients, as they begin a new chapter in their lives. She is very proud of the business she has built and what she has been able to do, not just for her family, but for the countless other families she has worked with. October 2016 | Saratoga Lifestyle

’m guessing that many of you are not familiar with the term “biophilic design”. So first things first, the term "biophilia" literally means "love of life or living systems." The term, biophilia, coined in 1984 by Edward O. Wilson, is the idea that humans evolved as creatures deeply enmeshed with the intricacies of nature, and that we still have this affinity with nature ingrained in our genotype. So, biophilia itself is the innate human affinity for nature, and Biophilic design is creating a living and working environment that allows you retain that connection with nature. Scientific and academic communities have discovered numerous human and community benefits achieved by connections to nature within our interior environments. Research shows that it can improve productivity, lower stress levels, enhance learning comprehension, and increase recovery rates from illness. The book “Biophilic Design”

by Stephen Kellert, Judith Heerwagen and Martin Mador expands on many of these studies. Biolphilic deisgn can be achieved in the most basic of ways through an excess of natural light, fresh air, and an abundance of plants. (Yale Environment 360, December 2009) Space saving and dramatic, moss wall art incorporates the growing trends of vertical gardening and “biophilic design”. Until recently, moss has been surprisingly absent from the design equation. Starting in Europe and the west, coast moss wall art has been gaining popularity in the design industry due to its simple, forever green and maintenance free features, as compared to living green walls that use sub tropical plants. Another benefit is its more affordable price point.
The range in texture, color and dimension of moss makes it a unique medium for wall art. Moss art pieces are fabricated from preserved mosses that are sustainably procured, lichens, natural woods and organic features that are mounted on reclaimed plywood. Each one is a unique piece of art and can be created in many sizes and shapes to suite the location. Green Conscience is excited to be the first retailer in the area to offer the beautiful customizable moss art pieces. “They are a unique, beautiful and affordable way to bring a connection to nature into your house.” says Totino , owner of Green Conscience Home. People interested in seeing what they look like in person can stop by the showroom at 33 Church St. Saratoga Springs.

*Home Equity Line of Credit, no closing costs, provided a minimum advance of $10,000 is taken at closing. Advances may be taken either by using standard Home Equity Line checks provided by the Bank or by signing a separate Installment Loan Agreement(s) with its own home equity loan rate(s) and term(s). Minimum advance by the installment loan method is $5,000 with a maximum of four outstanding loans at any time. As principal is repaid on the installment loan(s) advance(s), the available credit on the line increases by an equal amount. 2.99% APR for the first 2 years of the home equity agreement will be charged on new lines with advance(s) taken by writing a Home Equity Line check. This 2.99% interest offer does not apply if the loan purpose is to refinance an existing Saratoga National mortgage or home equity balance. At conclusion of the 2 year introductory fixed rate period, APR will be calculated based on the highest Prime Rate published in the Wall Street Journal. WSJ Prime Rate is presently 3.50% as of 12/17/15. For combo lines of $25,000 or more the annual percentage for advances taken by check will be prime +.25%, for lines less than $25,000, the annual percentage rate is prime +.75%. Rates on check advances are subject to quarterly adjustment throughout the term of loan and will not exceed a maximum of 14.95% APR. There is no minimum rate. This offer applies to consumer lines of $250,000 or less. Minimum payment of $100 on check advances may apply. Payments may be made through a Saratoga National checking or savings account. For a typical installment loan advance of $25,000 over 10 years, your monthly payment would be approximately $253.12, assuming an automatic payment from a Saratoga National checking or savings account and an APR of 4.00%. If the home equity agreement is cancelled for any reason within 2 years from closing date, the amount of closing costs and mortgage tax the Bank pays at closing (approximately $705 for a typical $25,000 line), will be added to payoff amount owed. Maximum approved line is 80% of appraised value of house minus existing first mortgage balance, if any. If the Bank determines Title Insurance is necessary, cost will be borne by customer. Customer required to maintain property insurance. All or part of Home Equity Interest may be tax deductible. Please consult with your tax advisor concerning your personal tax situation. All Annual Percentage Rates shown are accurate as of 12/22/15 and are subject to change anytime at Bank’s discretion. Subject to credit qualified. SHOES THAT SPEAK YOUR MOOD
omen and shoes go way back. Over the years, shoes have
been chosen for many different reasons; to show class and
style, for comfort, and depending on the terrain and season, for necessity….. And to this day, it still hasn’t changed. People still pick their shoes for all the same reasons, and it's not solely based on what Beyonce or the Kardashians are wearing. You are your own person. The shoes we choose to wear in the morning, that we typically wear for the rest of the day, are symbolic of how we feel. And sometimes it’s not even dependent on the season or fashion trend. Whether you’re feeling tired, or feeling confident, the shoe you choose will most likely reflect it. Here are 8 shoes that speak your mood AND are in trend for Fall 2016:

STEP TWO: ADD YOUR DRAINAGE LAYERS.
Once the container is ready, fill the bottom with rocks or pebbles. This is to create a false drainage layer so water can settle and not flood the plant. The depth of the rocks totally depends on the size of your container, but aim for 1/2″ to 2″. STEP THREE: ADD THE ACTIVATED CHARCOAL.
The charcoal looks exactly like what you would expect it to, and it’s messy. Sometimes it comes as small granules and other times it comes as shards—either works. The kind that is used in aquariums.
