Welcome! S

SEPTEMBER 2016

eptember is here, and with it brings the end of the summer season, and for me....saying goodbye to my favorite time of year. Growing up 45 minutes south of Saratoga, my summers consisted of renting boats on the lake, frequenting SPAC for concerts, and of course, packing up our cars to make it up to the Race Track early enough to snag a good picnic table. These fond memories of summer have carried with me through the years. I spent a good portion of my early 20s traveling the world, living abroad and cruising around the Caribbean. It wasn't until years later that I decided I wanted to move back to New York, year round. Not only because that's where most of my family and friends resided, but because I couldn't imagine planting my roots in any other town than Saratoga. As I celebrate my 10th year as a true "Saratogian" this September, I appreciate more and more of what this horse town has to offer. It's quite an amazing feeling to be part of such a tight-knit community. A community that welcomes and supports new and local businesses daily, yet still pays tribute to the ones that started it all. As the Editor for Saratoga Lifstyle, I can only hope that our readers share the same love as we do, and are excited for what we have in store. Cheers! Publisher's Letter I

t is amazing to me how many truly fantastic people I have met on this journey of building this first issue of Saratoga Lifestyle. Those of you that know me appreciate how much I enjoy meeting people, all types of people, with all types of personalities and varying interests and energy levels. I wish I could stop everyone I pass on my journey and ask each of you "where are you from and what is it that you do best?" I would like to ask you... "what makes you most happy" and of course, if given enough time, the most critical question always being "Are you a dog or a cat person?" You can learn a lot about a person by what type of pet they have. It just might be the best part of my job, meeting uniquely fascinating individuals from all walks of life. I have met amazing, strong confident women, that are driving all aspects of their life, their business and their destiny. I have met men so deeply committed to bringing about the many things that make our community so charming, unique and dynamic. I have met a variety of artist's that have made Saratoga their home, because Saratoga is known for embracing their unique talents and it is here where they can hone and shape their craft; and it is here is where they will thrive. Surrounded by residents and tourists alike, saying "yes, we see you, give us your best". I am blessed to have so many of you welcome me into your lives as a friend. After pondering on what might be the best part of my job... I can say with one-hundred percent certainty that meeting new people and making new friends... that is definitely the very best part of my job! I think I might be the only person in Saratoga that says "It's Friday already... the week went by too fast!" So if you see me, but you're too busy to stop and chat... just yell out to me "dog or cat".

15 CHURCH A NEW TWIST ON HISTORIC FLAIR

Saratoga Lifestyle | September 2016

W

hen we’re young, we’re often told by our peers that patience is a virtue. It seems cliched, maybe even downright dumb. But if you talked with Thomas Burke and his son Thomas Burke III, or their partner, Paul McCullough, they’d have something completely different to say about that. “I leaned against that old building, with not one bit of knowledge about construction, but I knew I was going to do something with that building. I use to run through that building with my best friend and I remember thinking back then that I knew one day I was going to own it” Burke III explains. This ‘building’ is what is now known as 15 Church, a premiere restaurant destination in the heart of downtown Saratoga Springs. It once belonged to the father of one of Thomas Burke III best childhood friend. This familiarity, and subsequent appreciation for architecture, led Burke III to eventually bid on the building, once he heard it was for sale.

We talked about the concept of 15 Church, and then the three of us took the leap together.” As a veteran of the restaurant industry, Paul McCullough knows a thing or two about what makes one successful. Thomas and his wife Regina, along with Paul McCullough and his wife, Susan, have helped turn what was once a dilapidated building into a thriving destination. With one of New York’s best chefs on hand,Chef Brady, and the premiere drink and wine selection, created by

the Wine Director, Jonathan, it doesn’t take too long to see why they’ve done so well for themselves. And as much as they like success, failure does have its merits. “We love to read our positive reviews, but we tend to focus on the bad ones. Perfection is impossible, but every day is another chance to ask ourselves how we can be the best we can be”. While this perfection is nothing new for an owner to pursue, it’s the passion and dedication towards making his establishment feel like home not only for his customers, but also for each member of his staff. “[15 Church] is meant to be a place of familiarity. Everyone from the hot shot from the city, to the guy around the corner, are treated equally. Our reservations never change and we always make sure everyone is comfortable when they dine here”. With dishes like Swordfish, Chilean Sea Bass and Grilled Octopus, it’s easy to see what he’s talking about in terms of quality. And with options for vegetarians and those who are gluten free..... well there’s something for everyone on the menu. And while its interior has the look and feel of an elegant 5 star restaurant straight out of New York City, Paul continually echoes a sentiment that seems sincere. “We want to be known as an approachable location” McCullough “We want to be known as an approachable location” says. “Something I’ve always held dear to me is the notion of nevMcCullough I’ve always held dear er separating ourselvessays. from our“Something guests. I’ve even driven customer's home. Whatever they need”. to me is the notion of never separating ourselves from our guests. I’ve even driven customer’s home. Whatever they need”.

16

Saratoga Lifestyle | September 2016

This may seem a little over the top to some, but one visit to 15 Church and you’ll immediately get the sense that everyone involved with the business aren’t just trying to please their customers..... they genuinely like it. Paul feels like the genuine article, an owner with such a deep sense of pride and appreciation for those who dine and work for him, that he’s willing to go that extra mile to ensure their comfort. “I won’t compromise on quality, and I’m embarrassed if something doesn’t go right” he assures me. It’s easy to get caught up in his words, simply because they don’t seem disingenuous. He mentions his desire to be part of the community and uses that desire to be more involved with it. And it’s easy to see that. They desire to see their dreams come true, and it stems from Paul and Thomas’ deep friendship, and mutual respect.

deally situated between exits 10 and 11 off the Northway, sits Maple Forest, a 16 home cul-de-sac subdivision with sidewalks and street lights tucked away in a park-like setting. The builder, Darren Herbinger of Herbinger Homes, isn’t new to the construction industry, though this is his first multi home project. Home Building wasn’t a field he decided one day to pursue, but was an outgrowth of working with his father, who owned a roofing business. At the age of 23, Darren branched out on his own to learn all the other facets of home building. For the next three years he worked closely to every construction job in the industry, while developing a close network of subcontractors that he still uses to this day. An important facet in building is framing, and he learned that skill by running his own framing crews. For the next several years he framed over 200 homes for some of the biggest builders in the area. He has brought the same quality workmanship he uses in his remodeling business for the past 20 years into the new home construction business, along with his network of trusted subcontractors. 18

Saratoga Lifestyle | September 2016

Being a native of the Capital District is something that is very important to Darren. He is proud of his hometown and the relationships he has established. The first home built in Maple Forest was built for his childhood friends in-laws, Bob and Cindy Louis. Darren grew up with their son-in-law, Greg, and when the Louis’s were looking for a home that would situate them perfectly between their children and grandchildren, Greg recommended they contact Darren. Greg knew of Darren’s project, Maple Forest, and of Darren’s work throughout the Capital District, a decision Bob and Cindy are proud of. Their home is a ranch style home with 3 bedrooms and 2 full baths. With aging in mind, both Bob and Cindy had wanted a single story home with open space, and were pleased that Darren and his architect, Jeremy Fernet of A Solid Build, were able to design a layout that fit their needs. Believing strongly in Maple Forest and its dedication to a solid built community, Darren has submitted his model home, the Hartwell into CONTINUED >

the Saratoga Showcase of Homes. He is confident that through the Showcase, the community will be given the opportunity to see the importance that his neighborhood will bring to Saratoga County. With its easy access to parks, pools and shopping, Maple Forest is the perfect subdivision for both growing families and maturing families. With the help of his team and his interior designer, Julie Maleski-Putzel, he is certain the house will highlight all the facets of building that he has dedicated himself to for the past 23 years. Mrs. Putzel is thrilled for this opportunity to work alongside Darren, though this isn’t her first major project. A graduate of Cazenovia College, she received her BFA in Interior Design. After college, she moved to Boston to pursue an internship with High End Residential Design, where she continued on full-time after the internship ended. From there, she worked for Belvedere USA, a company that provides interior design services for salons and spas. Her work can be seen in major salons and cosmetology departments throughout New England. After 15 years designing for other firms, Julie branched out and started her own private practice, JMP Designs. She moved to Saratoga County in 2014 with her husband and two children. The Showcase Home will feature work done by subcontractors that Darren has built a long trusting relationship with. From the beautifully landscaped exterior, done by Craig Monroe of Craig’s Mowing & Landscaping, to the intricate tile work that can be seen in the bathrooms and kitchen, done by Mike Buzzo of Absolute Tile. Darren will be sure to bring a home to the Showcase that the community will not want to miss. With a strong team of carefully chosen professionals by his side, Darren Herbinger will undoubtedly continue to establish Herbinger Homes, as a long lasting name in the home building community. 20

rin Coe is an inspiring example of someone who has poured her passion and expertise into her career. When you speak to Coe about art, the Glens Falls Region, and its community, her devotion is contagious. Coe had previously served as the Hyde’s Chief Curator for fifteen years before departing in 2014, and as many recollect was behind the acclaimed Modern Nature: Georgia O’Keeffe and Lake George exhibit. The BBC recently interviewed Coe for an upcoming

THE HYDE MUSEUM (CON TI N U ED)

“WHEN THEY ASKED ME TO STEP INTO THIS LEADERSHIP ROLE, IT WAS AN OPPORTUNITY TO LEAD THIS ORGANIZATION WITH A STRONG VISION, AND AFTER WORKING HERE FOR FIFTEEN YEARS I HAD ALREADY DEVELOPED A VISION THAT I COULD ACT ON. THE DECISION TO RETURN WAS A DECISION TO ACT AND I FELT I COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND MAKE AN IMPACT AND CHANGE THE MUSEUM FOR THE BETTER.” Coe’s beliefs are summed up perfectly in her acronym ACT which stands for accessibility, community and technology. During her fifteen-year tenure she had already raised the Hyde’s profile. When she returned it was to continue to build on her previous success, and to focus on ensuring the museum becomes more accessible, more engaged with the community, and all while recognizing the importance of technology in our lives. She believes this balance of technology and art is not to inundate but to enhance the visitor experience. To continue this relationship of art and technology, E-museum will be launched in the fall of 2016, enabling visitors to use their phones or other devices to access the Hyde’s collections’ database. This will be possible through the museum’s website. Coe and her staff are casting as wide a net as possible, providing a variety of entry points for learning, and whether it’s done the old-fashioned way or by employing our ever-changing technology—the goal is all about the visitor experience. “This means building relationships and affiliations with people and organizations that have impact. Rather than say, ‘Come see this great exhibition,’ museums need to provide an experience and become essential,” Coe said. After completing her first full year as the Hyde’s Director, Coe has accumulated incredible accomplishments. Coe has been working to restructure the staff, and has pulled together an impressive and cohesive team. Additionally, and in keeping with her mission of making the museum more accessible, she enacted a new program, Pay As You Wish, for December. The idea is to lift the admission fee so that each visitor can decide what he or she feels the experience is worth. Donations are decided at the end of the visit. The goal is to make the Hyde a community hub by reaching out to people of all ages, kids, families, those who suffer with Alzheimer’s and of course schools. “We are seeing the results; it’s tangible,” Coe admitted proudly. The biggest thrill for Coe so far was Werner Feibes’ donation-- 160 works and a million dollar gift to build a gallery dedicated to modern art. Coe has enjoyed a relationship with Feibes for more than a decade, so expressing to him the impact his collection would have on the Hyde and the community was an easy task. “It’s my job to cultivate relationships. This gift is transformational; adding another dimension to our exhibition and educational offerings while greatly 24

Saratoga Lifestyle | September 2016

enhancing our collection,” Coe said. There is no denying that this generous gift will make the Hyde one of the leading repositories of modern art in the region, and this, in effect, will add new opportunities that the museum’s staff could not have conceived of--even in the recent past. The collection includes work from some of the best known and most respected artists of the twentieth century. The community can be involved with the Hyde’s transformation in so many ways. Visiting the museum and enjoying the shopping, dining and historic and cultural sites in Glens Falls is an obvious pleasure. And becoming a Hyde member has a variety of perks from being the first to know, participating in behind-the-scene tours, or being part of the travel program to other museums—the Whitney, MOMA, the Frick, and even Sotheby’s. Coe would like to dispel the myth of the Hyde being known as “the hidden gem.” She expressed her view of the museum with quiet passion. “We are a jewel and I want the Hyde to shine. We are not hiding.” In keeping with this philosophy, Victoria Palermo’s installation, Camp Iris, surely grabs the attention of anyone passing by on Warren Street. Coe said, “This outdoor sculpture draws people in and engages the public.” Camp Iris has become a place of social interaction at the Hyde while altering the viewers’ perception of their surrounding environment. There are always new events, and new exhibitions that may come as a surprise to the community. More than 6000 school students each year enjoy a Hyde experience. Coe wants to change the museum’s perception, and get the message out—“There’s a lot going on and many reasons to come back and see The Hyde.”

Marylou Whitney and John Hendrickson attended as they have for many years. Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin was the evening’s honoree, and many friends and fans turned out to cheer him on. George R. Hearst III, Chairperson of the Center’s Foundation Board, described McLaughlin as an all around “good guy” who has had tremendous success with horses in the United States, Canada, Japan and Dubai. McLaughlin was presented with James Fiorentino’s original artwork of Invasor, Horse of the Year and Top Ranked Thoroughbred Racehorse in 2006 and winner of the 2006 Whitney Handicap. Billy Fuccillo of Fuccillo Automotive Group made a surprise donation of $50,000 to the Center on behalf of his business and his 2,000 employees in New York State. Guests danced to the music of The Electric City Horns, and savored food from Siro’s kitchen. 26

love design, and I love getting to wander around showrooms. Seriously, who else could get excited about faucets the way an

Interior Designer gets excited about faucets? That’s a rhetorical question by the way. But also, in that same category that is a snooze to most homeowners, is the front door. I am obsessed about a front door, and getting it perfect. In my opinion, there is not a single more important exterior feature to a home then the front door. I mean sure, there are many necessary and important items to a house. But the front door is the crowning jewel, and it sets the tone for the entire home. Executed well, a front door completes a home’s curb appeal, makes the home welcoming, and is the first thing a buyer will see when they glance at your home- versus the other 300+ on the market. So make it good! Here are some key components to an amazing front door: WHAT IS THE STYLE OF YOUR HOME?

Not only is it to state the obvious style, Tudor, Colonial, Federal, but also look at the windows, trim and siding. For example, if your home is majestic stone Victorian, you probably would not paint your door a whimsical Robin’s egg blue. Robin’s egg blue would be a stunning color for a cottage home, or cape cod style home with shingle siding. You want to choose a color that coordinates with your exterior finishes and material. I love to use at least three colors in EVERYTHING! Same is true for the exterior, this especially for Victorian style homes. If your home has shutters, you may limited your color choices. Look to the materials in your home, siding, roofing, stone. What does your neighborhood look like? How about your landscaping? Do you have flowers or shrubs? Stand on the other side of the street from your home and take a look at the colors you see. If you are still stuck, get yourself a color wheel from any craft store. It’s a great tool to show color relationships. COLOR SPECIFICS

Do NOT, I repeat do NOT listen to nay sayers about painting your home a trendy color. If you love Barbie Pink and your home is grey…. then you paint your door Barbie Pink sister! It’s paint for crying out loud! It can always be changed, and its not a major financial investment for a small can of paint. A few tips on picking your color: My advice is to stick to contrast, go with light or deep tones, and avoid mid tones. Mid tones in color on a front door can look muddy and washed out. You don't want your door to have a sun faded look. It’s also a good idea to contrast with the overall color of the home. A light grey home would look great with a deep toned door, and vice versa. Keep in mind, anyone who rings your door bell or knocks, will be standing at your entry way for an average of 20-60 seconds before you answer. That's a long enough for them to either get excited about your sunny yellow door and the décor that waits behind, or for them to hike up their pants because they don’t want your chipping faded brown paint to snag their pants. So Keep it fresh, keep it welcoming!!! September 2016 | Saratoga Lifestyle

DRESSING FOR THE SEASON

W

hile we love the sun shining on our faces, we have to say goodbye to days in the water, and say hello to nights spent by the campfire. It's hard enough adjusting our bodies and our sleep schedules to fit Mother Nature’s time clock, but what about our closets? This year, we are welcoming back the rustic and earthy tones of the past with open arms. Stores love to advertise the colors of autumn; yellows, reds, browns and dark greens all show up in the windows at the end of August, seemingly overnight. They are just as excited as you should be to start breaking out the warm socks. But, we worry about spending a fortune on the newfangled trends of the upcoming year. Instead of getting a whole new wardrobe, start layering! It’s been the perfect solution since, well..... ever. Pair the blue tank top you wore to the polo match in July with the cozy chocolate brown sweater you've had forever. Voila, you have welcomed fall into your life without a harsh dent in your wallet. Now, while autumn's arrival can mean boxing away the summer clothes you have so thoroughly loved, no one could give up the f lowy and comfortable dresses accumulated from, say, Saratoga Sundress! By simply adding a chunky sweater and knee high boots, one instantly transforms your look from "boho-chic" to" boho-chic-who-doesn’t-wantto-be-cold". This season, Saratoga’s finest accessory has been shown to be none other than the clutch. Grabbing such a compact purse is time saving, and adds a sense of completeness to your outfit ....rather than the chaos that a larger pocketbook can portray. Don’t get me wrong; bigger handbags are the perfect staple accessory for many a successful woman. But this season, however, the designers eyes seem to be leaning in favor of a small and simpler look. So forget about trading your tiny summer accessory in for a heavy winter bag, and spend more time getting noticed through your everyday ensembles and outerwear. 30

Trend Setter

This year, we are welcoming back the rustic and earthy tones of the past with open arms. Lately, the runways have been showing off camel coats like nobody’s business. The problem that may arise is that you will not want to take it off when you have left the chilly, outside air. But you can't go wrong with such statement pieces that will catch every person’s eye. Everyone will take notice when you are staying toasty and looking amazing. The key to fighting the habit of wearing the same outfits you did last year, can be found by simply mixing and matching pieces that you wouldn't think to put together. Live boldly!

The change of season is the opportunity for that ever-changing, yet still forever classic fashion world, to show off what it's got.

If you are feeling particularly daring this fall, pairing complementary colors together is a sure fire way to make a statement. Matching colors, even those unsuspectingly perfect pairs- such as deep purples and warm sunny yellows. With the right accessories and a certain flare, can break yourself out of the stifling browns and blacks that the colder months bring out. Of course, browns and blacks will forever remain the staples of the fall and winter months, but why not throw in some color every now and then? Or maybe all the time? The change of season is the opportunity for that ever-changing (yet still forever), classic fashion world, to show off what it's got. And you get to be the lovely recipient.

hhh September. Can it be that we’re already prepar-

ing to say good-bye to another wonderful summer? Is it really that time of the year where we begin to prepare for cooler temperature’s and a kaleidoscope of color amongst the flora and fauna? Well, maybe I’m jumping the gun a little bit, but as an avid gardener it's this

to keep my garden going for as long as possible, I need to shift my focus on those perennial’s that will keep it’s color and texture fresh up until the first frost meets beautiful faces. WRITTEN BY SIDNEY MARTIN

3. Chrysanthemums

The go-to plant for any fall garden, chrysanthemums come in an amazing variety of colors and textures making for a welcome splash in the garden when most summer bloomers have begun to fade.

4. Helenium Sneezeweed

Don’t let the name “Sneezeweed” scare you away from this stunning bloomer. The name came from the Native Americans use of the plant to make snuff. Helenium is making a resurgence in gardens. They look like small russet-toned coneflowers, in rich reds, yellows and oranges. Many helenium can grow quite tall and need to be staked or pinched.

5. Helianthus Perennial Sunflower

Helianthus isn’t as showy as the annual sunflower, but it is a good-natured, happy plant, branching and flopping on its neighbors. The brilliant gold, fluffy, daisy-like flowers make an instant focal point and will attract a variety of butterflies and birds. Helianthus tend to be sterile, so they don’t self-seed.

6. Heliopsis False Sunflower

Sunflowers get even more confusing with Heliopsis, the False Sunflower. It’s false because it is a different species than the annual and perennial sunflowers, but it looks very similar to perennial sunflower, Heliathus. Heliopsis tends to begin blooming earlier in the season than Helianthus and stays in bloom for 8 or more weeks. September 2016 | Saratoga Lifestyle

7. Sedum

One of my favorite plants for a fall garden, sedum comes as close to perfection as any plant can. It looks good all year, requires minimal attention and attracts few problems. It’s only draw back in that it isn’t deer resistant.

8. Solidago Goldenrod

Goldenrod is finally getting the respect it deserves, especially with varieties such as “Fireworks” and “Golden Fleece”. Unlike the native Solidago, that spread everywhere and flop as they reach their mature height, these newer varieties are sturdy and chock full of fall blooms.

9. Pansies

So there you have it, my friends. With these plants enjoying the cooler weather and the change of the seasons, they will lend themselves to helping you say goodbye to summer and hello to autumn. Happy gardening and always remember that the earth laughs with flowers!
