Happy holidays, readers!
Can you feel it? That magical holiday buzz is totally in the air! You know those moments when a certain smell, sound, or twinkle of lights instantly transports you back to childhood? That's the kind of seasonal magic I'm talking about – and I'm here for every single moment of it.
Every year, our holiday traditions unfold like a familiar, beloved story – each moment both comfort ingly predictable and magically new. I love pulling out those handmade ornaments – the ones my boys Charlie and Henry created back in preschool that are slightly lopsided and absolutely perfect. We've got our ritual of classic Christmas movie marathons (where I may or may not fall asleep on the couch), and our cherished Christmas Eve candlelight service that never fails to fill my heart right up.
The annual tree lighting in Smyrna is one of those magical community moments my family looks forward to every single year. Picture the Market Village filled with the sweet sounds of local school and church choirs, kids buzzing with excitement, and Santa arriving behind the Campbell High School Marching Band to light up our Christmas tree. It's that perfect evening where Smyrna comes together, celebrating the start of the holiday season with so much heart and joy.
In this issue, we're thrilled to spotlight many of the ways Smyrna Vinings comes alive this season. We're sharing everything from gift-giving tips from local experts to heartwarming stories about the incredible work being done by organizations within our community. And of course, we've rounded up some fun holiday entertainment and ways to give back. The season is indeed one of beauty and joy for many, but it can also be a tough time for those who have recently experienced loss or are facing challenges. Let's make it a point to reach out, offering a bit of company or a helping hand to those around us.
May your holiday season be filled with love, peace, and countless moments of joy. In a world that can sometimes feel a bit rough around the edges, let's keep the spirit of kindness and care alive in everything we do.
Sending you all the warmth, wonder, and holiday hugs,

Reformation Brewery helps bring water and other essential supplies to Hurricane Helene victims.
ARTICLE BY HANNAH YAHNE PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY REFORMATION BREWERY
Many know Reformation Brewery as the local gathering spot nestled along the Chattahoochee River on Riverview Road in Smyrna. However, residents in Flat Rock, N.C., and South Georgia now recognize the brewery as a beacon of hope and a source of clean water in the wake of Hurricane Helene’s devastation.
Co-founder and CEO of Reformation Brewery, Spencer Nix, began canning water to help those impacted by the hurricane in Western Carolina. Two friends of Spencer’s, Kevin and Kim Griggs, reached out on behalf of their friend, who was struggling to find clean drinking water after the storm. In less than 12 hours, Reformation Brewery canned a pallet of water and had it on its way to her community. As donations to Reformation Brewery increased, so did the support they could provide. Spencer expanded their outreach to Augusta and Valdosta in South Georgia, delivering water, food, and other essential supplies to communities in need.
Spencer is no stranger to disaster relief; he previously ran a nonprofit organization dedicated to managing disaster response logistics both locally and internationally. His commitment to helping others shines through Reformation Brewery’s community efforts.
CONTINUED >
“I truly feel a sacred trust with this community and Reformation,” Spencer wrote on an update page for the storm relief efforts. “I am privileged and committed to doing all we can to steward that trust as we export your love and kindness to others in the throes of real human despair.”
Reformation Brewery’s efforts reflect a powerful spirit of giving that goes beyond brewing. By transforming its production line to serve those in crisis, the brewery embodies the belief that community care is not just a local affair but a responsibility to reach beyond borders. As the holiday season draws near, Reformation Brewery’s story reminds us that acts of kindness—whether through water, food, or friendship—carry the power to change lives and inspire others to join in the work of giving.

While the heart of charitable giving lies in supporting causes we care about, there are smart ways to maximize the impact of your generosity. By understanding a few key strategies, you can make your donations work harder for both your chosen charities and your tax returns.
One savvy approach is timing your contributions strategically. Rather than making small donations throughout the year, consider “bundling” your charitable gifts into a single year. This technique can help push you over the standard deduction threshold, potentially leading to larger tax savings over time.
For those with investments, donating appreciated stock offers a win-win opportunity. Not only can you deduct the full market value of the shares, but you’ll also avoid paying capital gains tax on the appreciation. Better yet, the charity can sell the stock tax-free, maximizing the value of your gift.
A Donor Advised Fund (DAF) provides another flexible option for strategic giving. Think of it as a charitable savings account – you can contribute a larger sum now for the immediate tax deduction, then distribute the funds to various charities over time.
Make every dollar count this season by aligning your generosity with taxsavvy strategies that maximize impact for you and the causes you love.
This approach is particularly beneficial during high-income years when tax deductions are most valuable.
For retirees taking Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs), Qualified Charitable Distributions offer a unique advantage. By directing funds straight from your retirement account to charity, you can satisfy your RMD requirements while reducing taxable income – a double benefit that standard charitable giving doesn’t provide.
Remember, while these strategies can enhance the financial impact of your giving, the most rewarding aspect remains supporting the causes close to your heart. Consider consulting with a CPA or financial advisor to determine which approach aligns best with your charitable goals and overall financial picture.

Our community’s giving spirit was on full display, as friends and neighbors gathered to make a meaningful impact for Support Smyrna.
The recent Southern Nights Gala, co-hosted by Smyrna Vinings Lifestyle and Support Smyrna, brought together our community for a beautiful evening at the historic Reed House. This event was more than just a gathering; it was a celebration of the collective heart and generosity of Smyrna, raising vital funds to continue the extraordinary work of Support Smyrna. From start to finish, the gala was a testament to the power of community.
As guests arrived, they were warmly welcomed by members of the Smyrna Youth Council, setting the tone for an inclusive, community-centered night. The talented Scott Thompson provided the perfect musical backdrop and added a special ambiance to the evening. Outside, the Sip! truck provided refreshing beverages, inviting guests to mingle and relax on the charming porch and inside the beautifully decorated venue.
A feast of flavors awaited guests, with appetizers and desserts from local favorites including Good Kitchen, Atkins Park, and Hokido Japanese Restaurant. Muss & Turner offered a delightful crostini bar, while an elaborate charcuterie spread was a standout feature. Each bite showcased the diverse culinary talent of our community, adding to the night’s celebratory spirit.

The evening’s excitement only grew as guests explored the silent auction, which featured an impressive collection of items that reflected our community’s creative spirit and generous nature -- from stunning artwork and fine jewelry by local artists to dining experiences, travel opportunities, and more. Bidders could choose from gift baskets, self-care items, and unique finds for the home, sparking friendly competition and adding a playful energy to the gala.
The evening’s speakers, introduced by Smyrna Vinings Lifestyle editor Stacey Scott, brought into focus the profound impact of community service. Burke Scott, the magazine’s publisher, expressed his deep appreciation for everyone present, particularly the sponsors who made the night possible. His words resonated with all, emphasizing the value of community support and the pride that comes with belonging to Smyrna.
Mayor Derek Norton then took guests on a moving journey through Support Smyrna’s origins during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when the organization began by providing food assistance to vulnerable neighbors. Since then, it has evolved into a crucial resource, supporting children, families, seniors, and veterans in need. The mayor highlighted the crucial
roles played by community partners such as Quality Diversified Services (QDS), KBH Industrial, The Atlanta Fibroid Center, and the L and C Wood Family Foundation, whose contributions have transformed countless lives in our community. Special recognition was given to the dedicated board members who brought the gala to life, including Stacey Scott, Colleen Tull, Michelle Osborne, Daniel Parker, and Board Chair Laura Norton.
As the evening drew to a close, guests departed with Jonquil City cookies from Twin Kookies and their prized auction items, but the true sweetness of the evening lay in knowing that their participation would directly benefit their neighbors in need. The Southern Nights Gala stood as a shining testament to Smyrna’s community spirit, reminding us that when we come together, we create something far more valuable than a single evening of celebration – we build a stronger, more caring community for all.
Through Support Smyrna’s continued efforts and the generous backing of community members and sponsors, our citizens can rest assured that in times of need, they have neighbors ready to extend a helping hand. As we move forward into the holiday season, the gala serves as a beautiful reminder that the spirit of giving thrives year-round in our extraordinary community.

MY STROLL THROUGH BLUE BIRD LANE BOUTIQUE AND GIFTING TREE AND THE SECRET GARDEN
The holiday season is upon us, and Smyrna’s local boutiques are ready to make this a memorable one! With decorations lighting up every street and the spirit of giving in the air, it’s the perfect time to find unique gifts for everyone on your list. Located right in the heart of Smyrna, two delightful small businesses—Blue Bird Lane Boutique and Gifting Tree and the Secret Garden —are essential stops for holiday shopping.
Blue Bird Lane Boutique and Gifting Tree and the Secret Garden share a convenient spot off Concord Road, making it easy to browse an extensive selection of jewelry, handbags, clothing, and more. These sister shops have created a welcoming little haven of unique finds, perfect for anyone looking to add something personal to their gift-giving.
Walking into Gifting Tree, I was welcomed by a wave of warm, comforting scents. The ocean-inspired fragrance of Inis bath products reminded me of a breezy day on the coast—just the thing for anyone who could use a little escape. I also couldn’t resist the Noble Fir candle by Voluspa, with notes of cedarwood and fir needles that capture the essence of the holiday season. It struck me as the perfect gift for a friend who loves that Christmas coziness.
Next, I wandered over to the jewelry displays, which are always a highlight. Both shops carry handcrafted pieces from women-owned brands, adding a special touch to each item. David Aubrey’s colorful designs make a bold statement, while Able’s textured rings and minimalist hoops bring an understated charm that fits seamlessly into daily life. Knowing these pieces are crafted with intention makes them even more meaningful.
At Blue Bird Lane Boutique, I found the coziest sweater vest — a soft, relaxed piece I can imagine throwing over long sleeves all winter long. Right beside it was the Martina Silk Top, with layers that seem to flow so effortlessly. It’s the kind of piece that feels as good as it looks, adding a touch of elegance for a festive evening out.
And, of course, I couldn’t leave without checking out the purses. HOBO bags are popular for a reason: they’re beautifully made, versatile, and seem to work with just about every outfit. I picked one up, considering it for someone on my list (or possibly myself).
If you’re looking to make this holiday season feel a little more magical, I’d recommend stopping by Gifting Tree and the Secret Garden and Blue Bird Lane Boutique. There’s something deeply satisfying about supporting local spots and finding gifts that truly reflect the spirit of giving. From quirky surprises to luxurious staples, these stores have a way of making every holiday feel brighter.

HOW ONE ORGANIZATION IS ILLUMINATING PATHS TO INDEPENDENCE
In the spirit of the giving season, there’s a remarkable organization in our community that gives something invaluable: independence. Vision Rehabilitation Services of Georgia (VRS) transforms lives by empowering individuals with visual impairments to navigate their world with confidence and autonomy.
“Our mission is to empower individuals of all ages living with low vision or blindness, teaching them tools and techniques for independent, confident living.”
The organization’s story begins with a personal journey. In 1983, Sarah Sentell Scott found herself facing an unexpected challenge when she lost her vision at age 42. Discovering a stark lack of support services in Cobb County, she decided to become the change she needed to see. What started as a local initiative has blossomed into a vital resource serving the entire metro area and beyond.
“Our mission is to empower individuals of all ages living with low vision or blindness,” explains Jen Williams, Executive Director of VRS. “We teach them the tools and techniques necessary to function independently in personal, social, and professional environments.”
The impact of VRS’s work ripples through countless lives, challenging preconceptions about what’s possible for people with visual impairments. Jen shares a particularly touching success story of an out-of-state client who discovered newfound potential through their program. After just two weeks of training, this individual not only returned to their customer service position but thrived there for four years before advancing to a role as a sales lead generator.
In this season of giving, VRS reminds us that sometimes the greatest gift we can offer is the tools for self-reliance.
What makes VRS unique is their comprehensive approach to independence. The organization offers low vision exams paired with specialized devices, personalized coaching for daily living skills, and cutting-edge assistive technology training. Beyond the practical aspects, VRS recognizes the emotional journey of vision loss, providing private adjustment counseling and fostering supportive peer communities where experiences and triumphs are shared.
Community support plays a crucial role in making these services accessible. “Many of our essential devices and rehabilitation services aren’t covered by healthcare insurance,” Jen notes. Through donations, volunteering, and partnerships with local businesses, the community helps ensure that no one is left behind due to financial constraints.
As VRS looks toward the future, their vision extends beyond individual services to creating a comprehensive support network. They aim to expand partnerships with local businesses and organizations, developing opportunities that encompass not just employment but also social and recreational activities.
In this season of giving, VRS reminds us that sometimes the greatest gift we can offer is the tools for self-reliance. Through their work, they’re not just providing services – they’re illuminating paths to independence, one individual at a time, helping people with visual impairments discover that their potential knows no bounds.

Elevate your holiday hot chocolate with a charcuterie experience
As winter settles in and the air chills, there’s nothing more comforting than a steaming cup of hot chocolate. While a simple cup of hot cocoa can warm the soul, why not take it up a notch and indulge in a hot cocoa charcuterie board? Picture a delightful spread of various hot chocolate flavors, mix-ins, and toppings, inviting you to create a personalized, delicious mug of joy. Let’s explore the wonders of old-fashioned hot cocoa and all the accompaniments
you can use to create your very own hot cocoa charcuterie board.
Old-fashioned hot cocoa transports us to simpler times and brings with it a sense of nostalgia. The slow, traditional process of making hot chocolate from scratch –with real chocolate, milk and a touch of sweetness – provides a distinctly memorable experience for the holidays.

OLD-FASHIONED HOT COCOA
Ingredients
• ¼ cup 60% cacao chocolate morsels
• ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa
• 1/3 cup white granulated sugar
• 2 cups milk
• 2 cups half and half
• 1 pinch salt
• ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Directions
Heat all ingredients (except vanilla extract) in a 2-quart saucepan over medium-low heat until almost boiling. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
CREATING THE PERFECT HOT COCOA
CHARCUTERIE BOARD
Gone are the days of selecting only between marshmallows and whipped cream as toppings. With a hot cocoa charcuterie board, you can delve into a world of flavors, textures and spices that will make each sip an adventure, and serve as a sweet centerpiece to your holiday gatherings.
Begin by selecting a variety of flavors and mix-ins, such as mini marshmallows, salted caramels, white chocolate morsels and peppermints. Pair your hot cocoa with delectable treats like cookies, gum drops, crème-filled wafer rolls or chocolate-covered espresso beans. Consider adding biscotti, chocolate-dipped spoons or chocolate-coated pretzels as well as whipped toppings and an assortment of sprinkles.
VARIATIONS TO SAVOR
Indulge in some exciting recipes that are sure to elevate your hot chocolate into fun and festive beverages during the holidays and throughout the colder months.
MINTY FRESH WONDER
Embrace the festive season with a mint-infused hot cocoa. Fancify your beverage with a peppermint stick or make your
own crushed candy cane dust for a touch of holiday cheer. This minty delight is a crowd-pleaser and a perfect indulgence for cozy winter evenings.
SPICY AZTEC ELIXIR
Channel your inner adventurer with an Aztec-inspired hot cocoa. Infuse your drink with a touch of chili powder and a dash of cinnamon. Garnish with a cinnamon stick for a festive presentation. This fiery blend will ignite your senses and warm you from the inside out.
GROWN-UP GRASSHOPPER
Transform your drink into a rich adult-only grasshopper hot cocoa by adding 2 oz. of crème de menthe or a shot of peppermint schnapps. Adorn with a crushed candy cane rim for a playful offering.
DECADENT SALTED CARAMEL INDULGENCE
Elevate your hot cocoa experience with a drizzle of homemade salted caramel. The combination of slightly bitter cocoa and sweet, buttery caramel is a match made in heaven. Sprinkle an extra pinch of sea salt for that irresistible contrast.
JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”
As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.
Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.
One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.
Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.
These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just
about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”
We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.
To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.
The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.org
