Food FOR THOUGHT

Julia Child once famously said, “People who love food are the best people.” By that measure, I am an absolute gem. I grew up in the rural South, where working in the family garden was part of my daily chores. We were literally “farm to table” decades before it became trendy to eat only organic and post curated photos of every meal online. I’m from the Clean Your Plate generation, and my parents were not about to cater to our individual inclinations. While I don’t see how eating everything placed before me was ever really going to help any of those starving children in Africa I always heard about, I can say it instilled in me a willingness to try new foods and a broader palate than I’d probably have developed on my own.

I moved away from my small hometown as a young adult and landed in the big city of Atlanta. I can still recall my girlfriends and me teetering through the streets of downtown in impossibly high heels, headed to salsa dance, and passing all the elegant people streaming out of the fancy five-star restaurants we were entirely too broke to afford. “Someday,” we would muse. “Someday.” Instead, we would dance ourselves silly and then sit barefoot on the patio of Café Intermezzo in Midtown because they stayed open until 2 a.m. and served a slice of chocolate cake the size of our heads that we could all share.

Over time, as I got to know the city, I learned that those elegant eateries downtown weren’t the only amazing places for food. I discovered the long stretch of highway just outside the city’s perimeter that is literally miles of outstanding small restaurants boasting food from nearly every corner of the globe, thanks to the many immigrants that populate the area. I had the best taco of my life there from a place that was once an old gas station before it was converted into a tiny luncheonette. The date I was on that day turned out to be the love of my life and is now my husband.

Just this week, I made a reservation at one of those fancy five-star joints downtown. I’ll be dining with those same girlfriends from the young and poor salsa-dancing years. We are celebrating one of us turning fifty.

One thing I have learned in all these years is that what really makes a meal a GOOD one is less about the location or even the ingredients and way more about the people at the table. Whether it’s a taco in an old gas station, sharing a stool with your soulmate, or chocolate cake in a concrete courtyard, sitting hip to hip with your dearest friends, what makes those meals and moments delicious are the ones you’re sharing them with. Be it the kitchen table in your childhood home or the buttery leather booth you had to make reservations for months in advance, may we learn to savor every flavor.

VIKING ALCHEMIST MEADERY IS BREWING ANCIENT MAGIC IN MODERN SMYRNA.

Ancient Elixir, Modern Twist

ARTICLE BY STACEY SCOTT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BECCA MCCOY, CYDNEY WALLACE, PROVIDED
“We learned to fight, make glass, and work with leather and metal using authentic tools and methods.”

As autumn’s crisp air settles over Smyrna, there’s no better time to explore the warm, inviting world of mead at The Viking Alchemist Meadery. This family-owned gem, Georgia’s largest meadery, has been captivating local palates with its modern twist on an ancient beverage.

Mead, often called honey wine, has a rich history dating back thousands of years. The Viking Alchemist’s journey began with a fascination for medieval history and a chance encounter at a Society for Creative Anachronism event. “We learned to fight, make glass, and work with leather and metal using authentic tools and methods,” shares one of the founders. This immersive experience led to their first taste of mead, igniting a passion that would soon become their livelihood.

What started as a hobby quickly blossomed into a thriving business. “When a stranger offered to pay for a steady supply of our homemade mead, we realized we had a product worth marketing,” they recall. Today, The Viking Alchemist brings this storied drink to the heart of Smyrna, using only natural ingredients—from honey to spices and fruits—in every bottle.

Their flagship mead, Bliss, has been crowned Best Mead in Georgia five times. Inspired by a frangipane tart, Bliss offers an intoxicating aroma of Amoretto and a silky, slightly sweet flavor that lives up to its name. “The name was inspired by the look on the faces of our early tasters,” they explain, highlighting the mead’s irresistible charm.

With 48 taps in their Smyrna taproom, The Viking Alchemist is constantly innovating, blending oldworld charm with fresh, exciting flavors. From traditional meads to their own ciders and upcoming craft beers, there’s something for every palate.

Non-drinkers needn’t feel left out either, with a line of craft sodas on the horizon.

Introducing mead to the local community has been an adventure. “We still run into situations where people assume we’re saying ‘meatery’ instead of ‘meadery,’” they laugh. “They want to know where we keep the meat!” But once people taste the mead, they’re invariably intrigued and delighted by this “new” ancient beverage.

Beyond the beverages, The Viking Alchemist has become a vibrant community hub. Their taproom hosts an eclectic mix of events, from crochet sessions to puppy yoga. The space is perfect for hanging out with friends, enjoying board games on Sundays, or participating in unique experiences like puppy adoptions.

As the leaves turn and thoughts drift to cozy evenings, why not gather some friends and explore the magical world of mead? The Viking Alchemist’s knowledgeable staff will guide you through a tasting flight, helping you discover your perfect autumn sip. Don’t miss their Mead and Mischief Halloween costume party in October – a perfect opportunity to embrace the season’s festive spirit.

Visit The Viking Alchemist at their Smyrna taproom or look for their products in over 300 stores throughout Georgia, including Total Wine and Whole Foods. Raise a glass to fall and discover why mead, once the drink of ancient kings and newlyweds, is making a delicious comeback in our community!

PLANT-BASED PARADISE BLOOMS IN VININGS

PHOTOGRAPHY BY

In the heart of Vinings, a culinary gem is taking root and flourishing. Plantbaed Café, the brainchild of local entrepreneur Anne Onyeneho, is redefining plant-based dining in Atlanta’s suburbs.

Born from a surge in demand for Anne’s cookbooks and meal prep services during the pandemic, Plantbaed evolved into a full-fledged restaurant to meet the growing appetite for healthier, plant-based options. “I wanted to create a space where people could enjoy a full dining experience centered around plant-based cuisine,” Anne explains.

The menu at Plantbaed is a testament to Anne’s creativity and her journey as a former meat-eater. Innovative dishes like walnut meat tacos and oyster mushroom ‘fried chicken’ sandwiches offer satisfying alternatives that appeal to both vegans and non-vegans alike. “We focus on replicating familiar flavors and textures using whole food, plant-based ingredients,” she says.

Since opening its doors within the popular Vinings Jubilee shopping area, Plantbaed Café has quickly become a community favorite. Anne’s deep connection to Vinings and Smyrna shines through in every aspect of the restaurant, from its warm atmosphere to its commitment to using local ingredients.

Looking ahead, Anne envisions Plantbaed as more than just a restaurant. “We want to be a beloved community hub,” she shares. With plans for seasonal menus, expanded catering services, and a partnership with Boxi Caters for convenient delivery, Plantbaed is set to grow deep roots in the community.

For those seeking a delicious, nourishing meal that’s good for both body and planet, Plantbaed Café in Vinings is a must-visit destination.

Hot Boiled Peanuts

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Local author and teacher Kelly YoungSilverman is taking young readers on a delicious journey through the Peach State with her new children’s book,  Hot Boiled Peanuts: A Georgia Food Tour. This charming tale follows a child and her grandparents on a road trip across Georgia, sampling local delicacies and exploring historical landmarks from Savannah to the Blue Ridge Mountains.

LOCAL AUTHOR’S NEW CHILDREN’S BOOK SERVES UP A TASTY TOUR OF GEORGIA’S CULINARY DELIGHTS.

“AS A TEACHER, I KNEW IF I WROTE THIS BOOK, IT NEEDED TO BE BOTH FUN AND ENGAGING FOR FAMILIES WHILE ALSO BEING EDUCATIONAL ENOUGH TO BE SHARED IN SCHOOLS.”

Kelly’s inspiration came from a conversation with a fellow author who asked if she had ever written a book about Georgia. This sparked an idea that combined her passion for education with her love for Georgia’s rich culinary traditions. “As a teacher, I knew if I wrote this book, it needed to be both fun and engaging for families while also being educational enough to be shared in schools,” she explains.

The book resonates with readers both in and outside of Georgia, celebrating familiar foods and landmarks while introducing new experiences. “So many families have approached me to say, ‘I’ve been there,’ or ‘I remember summers where we’d buy hot boiled peanuts from roadside stands,’” Kelly shares. The universal themes of family, travel, and trying new things make it relatable to readers everywhere, including her own family, who always inspire her to write.

While Kelly hopes to encourage young readers to explore different cultures and cuisines, her primary goal as a writer, teacher, and mom is to inspire a love of reading. “I want to inspire them to read a book, relate to it, and then feel motivated to tell their own stories,” she says. Kelly believes Southern cuisine tells a story of community, history, and love, and she wants children to feel connected to that tradition.

With Hot Boiled Peanuts now available at local shops like The Bookworm and Barnes & Noble, Kelly is already working on her next projects, including her fourth book due this fall. You can follow her journey on her website and social media, where she shares updates on upcoming events. For now, she invites readers to join her on this tasty tour of Georgia, one bite at a time.

Recipe for Change

From Turkey Dinners to Turning Lives Around: How One Organization is Cooking Up Hope for Families in Cobb County.

Alexia Mason stocks shelves in the Choice Food Pantry

In the heart of Cobb County, an organization has been quietly transforming lives for over six decades. The Center for Family Resources (The CFR) stands as a testament to the power of community and the impact of compassionate action. Founded in 1960, The CFR has evolved from a coalition of six emergency assistance organizations into a comprehensive support system for families facing homelessness and poverty.

The CFR’s history is one of constant evolution, adapting to meet the changing needs of the community. What began as a means to provide emergency assistance has grown into a multifaceted approach to breaking the cycle of poverty. By the late 1970s, The CFR recognized a shift in their primary clientele—single mothers struggling to maintain housing. This realization prompted a focus on housing support, leading The CFR to manage apartment complexes and participate in various federal and state-funded housing programs.

Today, The CFR’s mission has crystallized around reducing childhood homelessness. Their approach is holistic, offering services that span prevention, crisis intervention, housing support, education, and compassionate care management. At the core of their work is a belief in empowerment—helping families find hope by taking an active role in shaping their futures.

One of The CFR’s most impactful initiatives is the Thanks for Giving program, which has been running for over 38 years. This program embodies the organization’s commitment to preserving dignity and family traditions. Instead of relying on food kitchens, families receive food boxes that allow them to prepare their own Thanksgiving meals at home. Over time, the program has expanded to provide additional staples, ensuring families have enough food throughout the week-long school break.

The program’s success is a testament to community involvement. Local schools contribute significantly, with some of the highest-need schools often showing the greatest participation. This spirit of

The organization offers year-round assistance through its Choice Food Pantry, housing support programs, and educational initiatives.

giving has created a ripple effect, with many former recipients returning as volunteers, eager to give back to a program that once supported them.

While Thanks for Giving provides crucial support during the holidays, The CFR’s impact extends far beyond. The organization offers year-round assistance through its Choice Food Pantry, housing support programs, and educational initiatives. These services are designed not just to address immediate needs but to equip families with the tools and resources necessary for long-term stability.

Melanie Kagen, CEO of The CFR shared a poignant story that underscores the organization’s vital role. During a food distribution at an extended-stay motel, they encountered families living in challenging conditions—children without parents, large families packed into single rooms, seniors in wheelchairs, and pregnant women, all struggling to make ends meet. This experience reinforced The CFR’s commitment to reaching those most in need, even when they might not seek help themselves.

The success of The CFR’s mission relies heavily on community support. There are numerous ways for individuals and businesses to get involved:

• Volunteer at the Choice Food Pantry

• Host a food drive

• Provide silent auction items for The CFR’s annual fundraising Gala

• Attend The CFR events

• Become a one-time or recurring donor through the Bridge Builder program

For those moved by The CFR’s mission, even small contributions can make a significant impact. Whether through time, resources, or financial support, every act of kindness helps strengthen the safety net for vulnerable families in Cobb County.

As we approach the holiday season, consider reaching out to The CFR to learn more about how you can help. Together, we can build a stronger, more resilient community where every family has the opportunity to thrive.

Endless Fun at Six Flags

Experience thrills, seasonal events, and delicious treats at Six Flags Over Georgia all year long.

When I think back to my childhood summers, our trips to Six Flags Over Georgia always come to mind. My family and I would buy season passes each year, allowing us to spend countless days at the amusement park. Whether it was a family outing or I brought friends along, Six Flags always provided endless entertainment, and it was a blast every time!

Recently, my childhood friend Bella and I made the quick drive to Six Flags to enjoy a few hours of fun and food. We challenged ourselves to ride as many roller coasters as possible, making sure to include the classics: The Scorcher, Mindbender, and Goliath.

Even though Fright Fest hasn’t officially started, signs of the spooky season were already in place. Skeletons and zombies lurked throughout the park, hinting at the scares to come when Fright Fest begins on September 14 and runs through November 3.

For those who prefer a less frightening experience, the Kids Boo Fest will take place earlier in the day. This event will feature a trick-or-treat trail, a pumpkin patch, and seasonal snacks for everyone to enjoy.

After riding so many roller coasters, we needed a snack break. From pizza to Dippin’ Dots, Six Flags offers concession options to satisfy any craving. And there’s even more to look forward to once Oktoberfest kicks off on September 14, with German-inspired cuisine like spicy chicken schnitzel sandwiches, pierogis, and bratwurst.

Six Flags Over Georgia will remain open through the end of the year on weekends and select weekdays. And don’t worry—the fun doesn’t end after Fright Fest! The 10th annual Holiday in the Park will take over the park starting on November 23.

From Pennington’s Pen:

Winston Churchill, who perfected the art of a clever verbal comeback, once quipped of a political opponent that he was “a modest little man who has a good deal to be modest about.” I must have a lot in common with the man Churchill d escribed. Not long after Ali and I got married a nd moved into our first house, we realized that our dishwasher door wasn’t closing properly. I c o ncluded that the door was somehow warped, a nd we would need a new dishwasher. As a last resort, I called one of our deacons to come by our h ouse and help me fix this unfixable problem. He g ot on the floor and in a matter of seconds, t wisted one side of the adjustable legs of the d i s hwasher to level it out straight.

T his is just one of dozens of stories I could share a s to how modest and little I can be. This is also why the account of how God humbled Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 4 is painful for me to read. The chapter ends with the fitting words that God is able to humble those who walk in pride. It shows how God moves a man from a place of immeasurable hubris into the humble state of mind that the king himself describes with the words, “my reason returned to me” (verse 34).

Pride can be so destructive. No matter how modest and little you might appear to be, it is a logic-defying problem that shows up in all of us.

“God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
- James 4:6

The issue is not if pride exists in our hearts, but where it exists and how it is being expressed. The Bible reveals to us that we are far more prideful than we care to admit or even dare to think about. The solution that God then offers is to replace our pride with God-given humility. That is the gift that God gives to a king in Daniel 4. When we learn of h i s journey from pride-filled insanity to humble s a nity, we learn that the same God who diagnoses o ur pride has also given us our needed remedy.

I ’d love for you to join us at Smyrna First Baptist as we learn how to abandon our pride and reassess our lives in light of God’s holiness and our sinfulness. Pride is our greatest enemy, but humility is our greatest friend!

But it’s not just about the food – their specialty iced coffees are a true treat for the taste buds. Indulge in unique flavors like Carmel King, or the intriguing Berry White. Rev Coffee Roasters: Where Quality Meets Community

For those who take their coffee seriously, Rev Coffee Roasters is a must-visit destination. This local gem has been a staple of the Smyrna-Vinings community for 15 years, earning praise from locals and visitors alike for its exceptional drinks and inviting atmosphere.

What sets Rev apart is their commitment to quality – they roast their own coffee on-site using only the finest beans. But don’t let that fool you into thinking they’re coffee snobs. Owner Nick Bimmerle’s favorite aspect of being part of the community is the way everyone looks out for each other.

“There are plenty of coffee options in the area, yet most of our community chooses to support local businesses,” Nick shares with pride. “It helps keep us on our toes – we’ve got to keep the community happy!”

Rev’s menu goes beyond just coffee, offering a variety of teas, chai lattes, and even frozen hot chocolate for those warmer Georgia days. Hungry patrons can enjoy breakfast sandwiches, fresh biscuits, and an assortment of pastries and quiches.

As the seasons change, so do their specialty beverages. Nick laughs as he tells us, “Right now, our current best seller is either the Creme Brulee or the Gregg Almond, but you know in the next few weeks it’ll be Pumpkin Spice or a Peppermint Mocha.” It’s this playful approach to their menu that keeps customers coming back to see what’s new.

Bolivar Coffee: A Taste of Colombia in Smyrna

Transport yourself to the lush coffee farms of Colombia with a visit to Bolivar Coffee. This unique establishment sources its beans directly from farms in southwest Antioquia, Colombia, bringing authentic flavors to the heart of Smyrna.

Manager Yura Agudelo’s eyes light up as she recommends trying their popular Arequipe Latte, featuring Colombian Dulce de Leche for a truly indulgent experience. “It’s super delicious!” she exclaims. For a full immersion into Colombian culture, Yura suggests ordering the Traditional Colombian Breakfast – a delightful plate of scrambled eggs with Hogao (sofrito), accompanied by Arepa and cheese.

Bolivar Coffee goes beyond just serving great coffee – they’re committed to sustainable practices and giving back to the communities they source from. With every bag of coffee sold, a portion of the proceeds is donated to a school in Colombia. It’s this commitment to their roots that makes Bolivar Coffee truly special.

Yura’s passion is evident as she shares, “We love sharing the experience of living the Colombian culture through our coffee. Whether it’s our delicious food or our warm smiles, everyone is welcome!” As fall approaches, she extends an invitation to the community: “Come celebrate the start of Fall with us. Let us warm your spirit with flavors of Colombia!”

Café Comma: A Gourmet Pause in Your Day

Sometimes, we all need a moment to pause and savor life’s simple pleasures. That’s the philosophy behind Café Comma, a chic coffee shop in nearby Vinings. Adventurous coffee lovers will delight in unique offerings like the “Comma Creme,” “Pistachio Creme Top,” and “Charcoal Coconut Latte.” Not sure what to try? The friendly baristas are always happy to guide you through the menu. Don’t miss out on their mouthwatering Avocado Toast – a generous slice topped with creamy avocado and zesty red pepper slices.
