THINKING OF INVESTING IN REAL ESTATE? THE WEST OAK TEAM REVEALS WHY YOUR HOME IS MORE THAN JUST A PLACE TO LIVE
Happy April!
Although this winter was mild—a trend we've seen in recent years—we’re definitely catching spring fever. As the saying goes, “April showers bring May flowers.” Maybe we even need to invest in a little extra rain to bring out the beauty of May!
This month, we’re focusing on investing—in every aspect of our lives. By "investing," we mean devoting time, energy, effort, or finances to achieve worthwhile results, whether that’s supporting our local community, enriching our relationships, securing our financial future, or boosting our health.
As parents to four daughters, we believe in investing in the future. After all, who else will take care of us when we’re older? On page 20, learn how Far Hills County Day School is investing in tomorrow’s leaders.
Your home is your biggest asset. On page 30, we feature Marie Young and the West Oak Team, who explain why your home is not just a place to live but a longterm investment. Make the most out of it!
Health is another key investment. On page 36, we interview Aviv Wagner, Assistant Fitness Director of JFit at the JCC. For Wagner, “it’s not just about the workout—it’s about making people feel comfortable and motivated, no matter where they are on their fitness journey.”
And then there’s investing in your finances. In a world where family dynamics are always evolving, protecting your assets during life's transitions is crucial. Turn to page 40 for insights from Eric Solotoff of Fox Rothschild LLP.
We’re also excited to share this month’s City List, where you voted for your favorite local businesses in categories like financial advisor, bank, law firm, co-working space, and auto dealership. Turn to page 14 to see which local gems earned Readers’ Choice status, and don’t forget to follow us on Instagram—@bridgewater_somerset_hills—for the latest updates. Every month, we roll out new categories!
Thank you for being part of the community. Together, let’s continue to invest in the moments that matter most.
Warmest regards,

Celebrate the arrival of spring with a refreshing Spring Blossom Fizz! This cocktail blends floral gin, elderflower liqueur, and citrus for a light, bubbly drink that’s perfect for April’s warmer days. Cheers!
Ingredients:
• 1.5 oz Gin (a floral gin like Hendrick’s works great) • 0.75 oz Elderflower liqueur (St-Germain is a popular choice)
• 0.5 oz Fresh lemon juice
• 0.25 oz Simple syrup (optional, depending on sweetness preference)
• Sparkling water or club soda
• A few dashes of bitters (orange bitters works well)
• Edible flowers or lemon wheel for garnish (optional
Optional Variation: For a slightly different twist, you can add a splash of grapefruit juice instead of the simple syrup for a citrusy bitterness.
Directions:
1. Shake the base: In a cocktail shaker, combine the gin, elderflower liqueur, lemon juice, and simple syrup (if using). Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds.
2. Strain: Strain the mixture into a tall glass filled with ice.
3. Top with bubbles: Slowly pour in sparkling water or club soda to your liking—about 2-3 oz, depending on how fizzy you want it.
4. Add bitters: Add a couple of dashes of orange bitters on top for a bit of complexity.
5. Garnish: Garnish with an edible flower (like a pansy or a small violet) or an orange/lemon wheel to bring a pop of color.

FLORAL AND REFRESHING COCKTAIL TO WELCOME SPRING
Investing in the next generation of learners is one of the most important initiatives communities can focus on. Somerset Hills CityLifestyle spoke with Georgia Zaiser, Head of School at Far Hills Country Day School, about how to nurture children's growth, inspire lifelong learning, and shape future leaders.
AS A PROFESSIONAL EDUCATOR, HOW DO YOU BELIEVE CHILDREN LEARN BEST?
Children learn best through experience. That’s why we prioritize STEAM—science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics— beginning at an early age. STEAM fosters hands-on, experiential learning that extends beyond traditional classroom boundaries. By actively engaging in real-world applications, students develop confidence in navigating an increasingly digital world. This approach deepens comprehension, encourages collaboration in small groups, and helps students see the tangible value of their efforts.
We raised $1.2 million to support a STEAM curriculum across all grade levels and create the Learning Commons, a state-of-the-art technology space for all students, faculty, and staff.
Beyond the classroom, our 54-acre campus provides countless opportunities for hands-on learning. In today’s digital age, where instant gratification is the norm, incorporating tactile experiences is more important than ever. For example, our seventh-grade science students don’t just read about organisms and biomes— they collect water samples from our campus pond and analyze them under a microscope. In social studies, instead of simply studying a map, students build one from clay, reinforcing geography in a tangible way.
Traditional skills like memorization, studying, and note-taking remain essential, but when paired with experiential learning,
concepts come to life in ways that feel natural and engaging—sometimes without students even realizing how much they’re learning.
Individualized attention is essential. At Far Hills, our intentionally small class sizes allow teachers to form meaningful connections with each student, fostering a deep understanding of their unique strengths, challenges, and emotional needs. While academic excellence is at the core of our mission, we take a holistic approach—nurturing intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Through character education, leadership opportunities, and a supportive community, we empower students to develop self-awareness, resilience, and empathy—critical skills that will serve them well beyond the classroom.

HOW CAN PARENTS INVEST IN THEIR CHILDREN’S DEVELOPMENT?
For younger children, I encourage parents to minimize screen time and prioritize outdoor and unstructured play. Free play fosters creativity, problem-solving, and adaptability—skills that can be stifled when every moment is scheduled. Overloading children with structured activities can hinder their
“WHILE CHILDREN MAY RECEIVE AN EXCEPTIONAL EDUCATION, IT BECOMES IRRELEVANT IF THEY LACK INSPIRATION, CURIOSITY, AND RESILIENCE . REAL LEARNING EXTENDS BEYOND KNOWLEDGE ACQUISITION; IT REQUIRES THE ABILITY TO ADAPT, EXPLORE, AND PERSEVERE IN THE FACE OF ADVERSITY.” - GEORGIA ZAISER
ability to navigate unscripted situations, build resilience, and develop critical thinking
In my eighth-grade wellness class, I remind students that human beings are imperfect. When parents expect perfection, they risk creating anxiety rather than confidence. Instead, they can focus on our school’s five pillars—kindness, responsibility, honesty, leadership, and respect—as guiding principles. Getting involved in the school community through volunteering, joining committees, or attending events also strengthens a child’s sense of belonging.
I love seeing parents on campus—that’s what makes a school a true family. It’s one of the reasons I was drawn to Far Hills Country Day School, not only as an educator but as a parent. Both of my sons attended from age 3 through eighth grade, so I experienced firsthand the impact of this community for 14 years.
INVESTING IN CHILDREN ALSO MEANS INVESTING IN TEACHERS. WHAT CAN SCHOOLS DO TO HELP TEACHERS GROW?
Supporting teachers' growth directly enhances student success. At Far Hills, we are committed to continuous learning, which is why we have an endowed fund dedicated to professional development. This investment allows our educators to pursue graduate degrees, obtain specialized certifications,
and engage in ongoing training that keeps them at the forefront of best practices in education. By empowering our teachers with the latest research, methodologies, and innovative strategies, we ensure they can provide the highest level of instruction and mentorship to our students.
Investing in children must also require an understanding of their challenges and teaching them how to navigate them.
Absolutely. When I surveyed my eighthgrade class, students shared that they feel immense pressure—to get into a top high school, excel in sports, achieve perfect grades, and meet unrealistic expectations. Social media amplifies these pressures with
curated perfection, which can take a toll on their mental and emotional well-being. Our role as educators is to help children develop resilience, coping skills, and a realistic perspective on success. A strong academic foundation is important, but without curiosity, adaptability, and the ability to overcome setbacks, knowledge alone isn’t enough. Too often, the focus on grades overshadows essential soft skills—like leadership, teamwork, and conflict resolution— yet these are the very qualities that often lead to long-term success.

Finding the perfect home can feel like a daunting task, especially in a competitive market. But few have as much experience as the West Oak Team, sales associates with Coldwell Banker in downtown Basking Ridge. For this issue on investment, I sat down with Marie Young and her team. With over $60 million in sales last year, the team has helped clients navigate the complexities of buying and selling homes in a market where 47% of U.S. real estate agents sold zero homes. In a recent interview, they shared valuable advice for anyone looking to invest in real estate, including the home you live in right now.
Young emphasizes the importance of viewing your current home not just as a place to live but as a long-term investment. “When people look back at their first home, they often realize that it wasn’t just a home—it was the stepping stone to the next level,” she says. “Even if it felt like the ‘forever home’ at the time, it usually helped build the equity that allowed for future opportunities. This shift in perspective can make a big difference for both buyers and sellers, especially given the surge in property values over the past few years. People who bought homes in 2022 or 2023 have realized a considerable increase in equity,” she adds.
While we seldom think of the homes we live in as investment properties, over time, they may turn into just that.
Young’s first home needed updates, but the price was right, the floor plan was great, and the neighborhood ideal. A one-year adjustable mortgage was 11%, compared to 16% for a fixed-rate mortgage. With each passing year, prices went up, and rates came down. “We enjoyed living there, and when it was time to leave the state, prices had almost doubled, and fixed rates were 10%. With that appreciation, we were able to purchase a fantastic home. Once again, our second home purchase withstood the test of time, and here we are!”
One of Karen Gray’s clients experienced something similar. Eager to join the Basking Ridge community and with severely limited single-family home supply, they purchased a townhome in need of a little love. They invested in beautiful updates, were able to experience life in the area, and when the dream home finally came along, they had already built the equity and stability to purchase it. Already owning the townhome locally gave them the peace of mind to continue their search for a single-family home at their own pace.
“It’s not just about finding a house—it’s about making sure that house will work for you both today and in the future.”
- Marie Young
Many of their seller clients were previously buyers, while others chose West Oak Team members specifically to sell their homes. Young shared that when a life change unexpectedly caused a sale, even clients who had purchased their home thinking they would never move were pleased to discover how the value of their investment had grown. Enjoying appreciation in equity while staying in step with the market gave such sellers a strong sense of financial security.
For those seeking a place to settle, the Somerset Hills is one of the best-kept secrets in New Jersey. “It’s green, beautiful, and has a wonderful sense of community,” Young says, explaining that the local environment and quality of life are key draws for families. “The schools are excellent, and people here really rally together. During the pandemic, the whole town chipped in to support local businesses, first responders, hospitals, and veterans. It’s that kind of town.”
The team also highlights the area’s proximity to major cities and amenities, including beaches, ski slopes, and the growing number of restaurants and local attractions. “This area has become a prime focus for people moving from cities like New York and Jersey City who want a more relaxed lifestyle with access to the best of both worlds.”
Hope Salamone and Neha Jain recommend maintaining the home’s value during ownership. “It’s not just about the market. It’s about upkeep,” they say. “Small issues, like peeling paint or aged appliances, can snowball into costly repairs down the line. Good maintenance shows and gives buyers a sense that the home has been well taken care of.”
“Even if you plan to live in the home forever, you’ll want to treat it like an investment. And if you eventually need to downsize or upsize, you’ll be in a much better position,” Karen Richman notes.
The team receives many accolades from their clients for the personalized service and the extras they offer to help homes look their best—complimentary staging, furniture placement by insured professionals, setting up fire and town requirement items, and attending to all the little things that, in the aggregate, can be monumental.
With their deep knowledge of Basking Ridge and the local real estate market, the team is passionate about helping people find homes that align with both their lifestyle and investment goals. Whether you’re buying your first home, investing in property, or just looking for the right place to settle, their advice is invaluable for navigating today’s dynamic market.
As Young puts it, “It’s not just about finding a house—it’s about making sure that house will work for you both today and in the future.”
Whether your plans are longer or shorter term, call the team now - they can help you get started.

When you think of a gym, you probably picture rows of treadmills, weights clanking, and people pushing themselves to the limit. But at the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum Jewish Community Center (JCC) in Bridgewater, fitness is about so much more than that. It’s about community, connection, and creating a space where everyone feels like they belong. Oh, and did we mention they just won Best Gym in Bridgewater this January? Yep, you heard that right—JFit is officially the top choice for fitness in town, and there’s one team member in particular who’s helping make it happen.
Meet Aviv Wagner, Assistant Fitness Director of JFit at the JCC, who’s been living and breathing Bridgewater for the past 17 years. He’s not just a fitness pro—he’s a local with a big heart, and his love for the community shines through in everything he does.
“I’ve always felt a deep connection to Bridgewater,” Wagner says with a smile. “The warmth of the people, the way everyone looks out for each other—it’s what made me want to put down roots here.”
Wagner’s journey with the JCC started back in 2007 when he joined as a member. Fast-forward a year, and he was stepping into the role of personal trainer and fitness instructor. “When I joined, I immediately felt a sense of belonging,” he recalls. “The JCC’s inclusive, welcoming atmosphere was like a perfect fit for me, and the strong Jewish community made me feel right at home.”
It wasn’t long before Wagner's passion for fitness, his dedication to his members, and his natural leadership qualities earned him a promotion to Assistant Fitness Director. “It was such an honor to take on that role,” Wagner says. “It’s been an incredible ride, and I’m lucky to be part of such a supportive team.”
ARTICLE BY CARLY MAC MANUS PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHIMON AND SARA BIRNBAUM JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER
So, what sets Wagner apart from your average fitness trainer? It’s simple: his philosophy. “Fitness isn’t just about looking good—it’s about feeling good and taking care of both your mind and body,” Wagner explains. “When you treat your body well, your mental and emotional health improves too, and that leads to a positive cycle of wellness.”
Wagner’s secret sauce? A contagious positivity. “I always try to bring good energy into every session,” he says. “It’s not just about the workout—it’s about making people feel comfortable and motivated, no matter where they are in their fitness journey.” And it seems to be working, because JFit isn’t just a gym; it’s a community of people who genuinely enjoy coming together to work toward their goals.
Wagner’s time at JFit has been marked by some major milestones. One of the most exciting was the gym’s recent renovation. With the addition of state-of-the-art fitness facilities, including a brand-new Fitness Center, Cardio Studio, and Functional Training areas, the JCC is now equipped to serve its members like never before. “The renovation was huge for us,” Wagner says. “It allowed us to provide more options and better experiences for our members.”
But perhaps the most memorable moment for Wagner was his promotion to Assistant Fitness Director. “It felt like a big moment in my career,” he shares. “Being promoted was a testament to all the hard work and dedication I’ve put in, and it’s been incredibly rewarding to help lead such a passionate team.”
What makes Wagner’s approach to fitness so special? It’s the connection he has to the Bridgewater community. “Living here has been a huge advantage in understanding the needs of my clients,” Wagner explains. “People know me, they trust me, and I understand the values that make this town so great.” This deep community bond helps Wagner connect with his clients on a personal level, and it’s part of what makes his fitness programs so effective.
Wagner’s relationships with local families, schools, and organizations have also helped grow his clientele. “Whether it’s through word-of-mouth or working with parents of kids I’ve trained, being part of this community has been essential to my success,” he says.
One of the things that makes JFit stand out is its team-oriented environment. Under the leadership of Fitness Director Jessica Kichura, the fitness team is all about collaboration. “We don’t compete with each other—we help each other grow,” Wagner shares. “Jessica’s vision has been instrumental in making JFit such a dynamic place, and it’s my goal to support that vision by offering high-quality, personalized training to every member.”
It’s this supportive, family-like atmosphere that truly sets JFit apart. “We’re all in this together,” Wagner says. “It’s not just about the workout; it’s about the connections we make, the goals we achieve, and the way we support one another along the way.”
Wagner’s dedication to his clients has resulted in some incredible success stories. One that stands out is Perry, a long-time client who’s been training with Wagner for over a decade. “Perry is a true inspiration,” Wagner notes. “He’s been consistent with his workouts, and watching his transformation has been one of the most rewarding parts of my career.” Perry’s success is a testament to
Wagner’s commitment to helping people achieve lasting results, one rep at a time.
Looking to the future, JFit is gearing up for one of its most exciting events of the year: the annual JFit Triathlon. Scheduled for Sunday, April 27, the triathlon is a collaboration between JFit and the JCC Aquatics Department. It’s a day of friendly competition and community spirit, with participants of all fitness levels coming together to challenge themselves. “It’s a great way to get everyone involved,” Wagner shares. “Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or a beginner, this event is about having fun and supporting one another.”
The triathlon is just one example of how JFit is constantly evolving to offer more opportunities for people to get active, get involved, and most importantly—have fun.
JFit’s recent win as Best Gym in Bridgewater is proof that this team is doing something right. But for Wagner and his colleagues, the true reward is seeing their members succeed, both in and out of the gym. “Fitness is about building relationships, supporting each other, and celebrating progress,” Wagner says. “And that’s what we do every day here at JFit.”

In a world where family dynamics are constantly evolving, ensuring that your assets remain protected during life’s most significant transitions is paramount. Eric Solotoff, the chair of the Family Law Department at Fox Rothschild LLP, understands the complexities of family law and the critical importance of asset protection. With nearly 33 years of experience, Solotoff has become a trusted advisor, particularly in high-net-worth and high-conflict cases. Based in New Jersey but with a nationwide practice, Solotoff and his team are known for guiding clients through both contentious and collaborative family law matters.
Solotoff’s journey into family law was somewhat unexpected. Initially, he had planned to enter the world of bankruptcy law, but after a fellowship at law school, he found himself drawn more to family law. “I didn’t think I was going to be a litigator or involved in family law,” he explains. “But I discovered I had a passion for it.” His personal background also likely contributed to this shift in focus. Solotoff’s parents divorced when he was very young, and like many of his clients, he had witnessed firsthand the challenges of family separation.
This combination of personal experience and professional expertise has shaped his approach to family law. He’s particularly skilled at navigating complicated situations involving high-net-worth individuals and businesses, as well as difficult custody disputes.
One of the most valuable services Solotoff offers is helping clients protect their assets before they enter into marriage, particularly through prenuptial agreements. While not every couple requires a prenuptial agreement, it’s worth considering for individuals with significant assets, such as family businesses or trusts. A prenuptial agreement can help protect those assets and provide clarity on financial matters.
For individuals entering new marriages, or those with children from previous relationships, a prenuptial agreement can ensure that existing assets are protected and that children from prior marriages are considered. It offers peace of mind, knowing personal wealth is safeguarded.
“Prenuptial agreements are a smart choice for individuals with important assets they want to protect,” says Solotoff. However, for younger couples just beginning their financial journey, he advises against rushing into a prenup as their financial future may still be developing.
Without a prenuptial agreement, it can be more difficult to protect certain assets, such as a premarital business. Any property acquired during marriage is considered marital property, and it’s important to have clear terms from the start.

“Fashion is always changing, and it’s important to stay relevant.”
When it comes to investing in a good pair of eyeglasses, the process goes beyond simply choosing a frame and lenses. For Jerry York, owner of Gerald A. York Optician in Basking Ridge, it's

about ensuring every client leaves satisfied and with glasses that truly fit their needs.
York's journey into the optical industry began when his father, a manager at an optical practice in Morristown, decided to open his own store after a disagreement with the owner. "No pun intended—but my dad didn’t see eye to eye with the owner, so he decided to branch out on his own," York explains. "My mom left her job at Drew University to help him run the office once it became too busy for him to manage alone."
Now, nearly 48 years later, York continues to run the family business with the same philosophy his father instilled in him: treat every customer like family and prioritize their unique needs. "We treat our clients like family," he says. "We understand their different needs as it pertains to eyewear, and everyone is different. We strive to meet all expectations, creating a warm and welcoming environment where everyone feels recognized.”
the eyewear; it's about understanding how people live and how glasses can help them function better," he shares. By asking questions about their daily lives, York can recommend frames and lenses that best suit their personal style and functional needs.
"Are they tough on glasses? Is it more of a fashion statement? The more I understand about them, the better I can guide them in making the right selection," he adds. York's ability to quickly assess what a client needs is honed through years of experience.
One of the common misconceptions about eyewear is that high-quality glasses are always expensive. According to York, his store offers a wide range of options to suit every budget. "If you don’t want to spend a lot, you don’t have to. But when it comes to progressive lenses, the better technology makes them easier to use," York explains.
Progressive lenses, which allow for multiple prescriptions in one lens, have improved dramatically over the years. York compares the differences in progressive lenses to car brands. "You can buy a Honda Civic or a Bentley. Everything in between is an option, and it all depends on what the client needs," he says.
Some customers, he notes, can be sensitive to the design of progressive lenses, which means they may need to spend a little more to achieve clearer vision. "This is another example of where getting to know your client comes into play," York notes.
Eyewear trends, like fashion trends, are always evolving. York’s practice keeps up with the latest styles to ensure clients get the best of both fashion and function. "Fashion is always changing, and it’s important to stay relevant," he says.
In addition to keeping up with fashion, technology plays a huge role in today’s eyewear market. "The biggest changes in technology are anti-reflective coatings and progressive lens design. The best technology five years ago is now considered outdated," York shares. He adds that the advancements in progressive lenses are remarkable. "They’re the clearest and most seamless they’ve ever been. If someone has had trouble with progressive lenses in the past, they probably didn’t have the right lenses for them or they didn't fit properly."
York prides himself on being an expert at finding the right progressive lens fit for his clients’ needs and budgets. "It’s about finding the right balance between style, comfort, and technology," he explains.
“IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT
While many people invest in new glasses, York stresses the importance of routine eye exams as part of comprehensive eye care. “An eye doctor can tell a lot of other things that might be wrong with your body through a routine eye exam,” he says.
York shares a personal story about a friend whose life was saved by a routine eye exam. "My friend had a 90% blockage in an artery, and the symptoms were discovered during an eye exam," he explains. "Routine exams are essential, not only for vision health but also for your overall well-being."
Investing in quality eyewear is more than just about seeing better; it's about ensuring you're comfortable, stylish, and maintaining good eye health. Whether it's for fashion, function, or overall well-being, a trusted optician like Jerry York can help you make informed decisions about your eyewear needs.
