Dear Readers,
With the holidays on the horizon, I can’t help but reminisce about the enchanting moments of my childhood, especially the delightful scent of homemade cookies wafting through the air, which always takes me back to simpler times. It's interesting how we try to recreate that magic for our families, whether by hanging twinkling lights or watching heart warming holiday movies that evoke a nostalgic tear.
Our family has a special tradition that sets us apart from the typical holiday rush. Each Christmas Eve, we make our way to Blue Sheep Bake Shop in Somerville for a scoop of ice cream—yes, ice cream, regardless of the winter chill! This sweet ritual began when my daughters insisted on a treat before the big day, and I couldn’t resist indulging them. It’s become a beloved part of our holiday celebrations.
Now, I must share a little secret: I’m not a fan of decorating the Christmas tree. There, I said it! It often feels like a never-ending struggle with tangled lights and ornaments that seem to have minds of their own. Who really wants to debate the placement of that glittery reindeer ornament from the 1980s? By the time we're done, I can't tell if our tree is a festive display or an abstract art piece. If I had my way, I’d just throw a bow on it and call it a day!
This month, we’re thrilled to spotlight the season's magic right here in the Somerset Hills. Be sure to check out our gift guide on page 32, featuring local gems to simplify your holiday shopping while supporting our dedicated small businesses. Plus, our Events listing on page 54 is filled with activities that promise joy for the entire family.
While this season can be beautiful, it can also be tough for many—especially for those missing a loved one. Let’s remember to open our hearts to those in need, embracing the true spirit of the holidays with grace, empathy, and kindness.
Wishing you all love, laughter, and a touch of holiday magic!
Warmest wishes,

Nice kicks!
This is exactly the reaction that Jerome Stukes relishes. While some artists paint on canvas, Stukes transforms sneakers and athletic shoes into wearable art. And in doing so, he brings a

spring into the steps of schoolchildren, athletes and celebrities alike.
Stukes, who has a degree in visual communications and is a long-time sneaker fan, happened upon his chosen artform in 2010 when he discovered leather paint while looking to jazz up a pair of retro sneakers. When the sneakers started to crack and crease through wearing, he did more research on how to prep leather to keep the designs sharp. And then, he continued to experiment.
Around 2014, Stukes started to post his designs online. “It blew up like crazy,” he says.
Today, through his company, SBD Kustoms in Bound Brook, Stukes is now creating custom designs for
sell retail shoes and clothing as well as custom sneakers and shirts by Stukes.
“Customers can get a name-brand outfit or customize an outfit,” Stukes says. “Since it’s football season, people are getting their team on their shoes. I make it as unique as possible, using stencils for background effects, so you’re not just getting the logo.”
With the holidays approaching, Stukes’ artistry offers creative ideas for gift-giving. He works with customers to create a design that represents them. “I tell them, ‘I’m your muse. Just throw your idea at me, and I’ll tell you if it works,’” he says. “Sometimes, customers tell me to do what I want to, and that’s when I have fun and get a little funky.”
Each shoe — especially sports shoes like cleats — has a scratch proof finish for durability. Stukes recommends keeping the shoes clean by wiping them down gently with a cloth and not using anything harsh that could scrape the design. However, with wear, shoe creases or rubbing will happen, he says. And when it does, he offers a service to clean and refresh the worn designs. “However, I know people who brought shoes from me five years ago and they still look like the day they got them because they take care of them,” he says.
Want a unique sneaker inspiration? Stukes has you covered: Check out his portfolio of designs on his Instagram page or on his computer in the store.
In addition to offering custom work, Stukes also hosts classes in shoe and fabric dying, shoe cleaning and sneaker art classes for beginners and advanced students — another creative gift idea.
Giving back to the community is important to Stukes, who lives in Bound Brook with his fiancé Desiree and daughters Mila and Maris. Whether it’s offering giveaways for kids and or tabling at street fairs, Stukes is very present in the community. “At the fairs, I airbrush a silhouette of a black-and-white sneaker on a canvas and give kids paint markers to color the shoes. Then, they can take the canvas home,” he says.
Recently, Stukes taught a sneaker painting class for 50 children at the Martin Luther King Center in Bridgewater. “That was really fun.
When I do a group class like that, I start off with a galaxy design, because it’s pretty easy — there is no way that you could mess it up. They paint a background of purple, blue and pink and then we shave it off with some black at the end. Then we put white paint on a toothbrush and flick on the star effect. And I use a star spray,” he says.
The sneakers he works on do not have to be expensive Nikes or Air Jordans, either. “Leather sneakers bought at Walmart work just as well,” he says. Prices for his designs vary, but most custom works range from $150 to $200 or more, depending on customizations, such as add-on options like Louis Vuitton fabrics.
Stukes, who grew up in area towns, but primarily in Somerville, attributes his love of giving back to the community to his late father, David Stukes, who was well-known and much beloved for his philanthropy. “My father worked at the food banks, the food drives, Thanksgiving dinners at the PeopleCare Center in Bridgewater and other area organizations — and brought me with him. Somerville even named a street after my father to honor him for his community efforts,” he says. “This is naturally inside me, and I especially have a soft spot for kids.”
The “SBD” in the company name honors his community-minded father: Shoes by David. “My father’s spirit is helping me paint the shoes,” Stukes says.

We don’t just educate—we empower. Our students graduate from our Preschool–Grade 8 program ready to lead at the nation’s top day and boarding schools.
Nestled on a sprawling 54-acre campus, we cultivate a vibrant community that inspires innovation and collaboration. Here, students build lasting connections across grade levels, engaging in meaningful dialogue and challenging expectations. They embrace curiosity, think critically, and tackle complex problems with confidence.
Our dedicated faculty nurtures resilience, independence, and leadership skills that extend far beyond the classroom. At Far Hills, we prepare students to not just navigate the future but to shape it. Join us in creating tomorrow's leaders, equipped to make a lasting impact in their communities and beyond.
As the leaves begin to turn and the air gets crisper, many of us find ourselves dreaming of cozy spaces and festive gatherings. This season, we turn our spotlight on a remarkable renovation that not only enhances functionality but also showcases the charm of a beloved home. J2 Design Studio, led by owner Denise Jones, took on the challenge of transforming a classic saltbox house in Bernardsville, for homeowners Claudia and Steve Dey.
The homeowner longed for her home to be a more welcoming and relaxing retreat, now that their adult children were on their own. J2 Design Studio was charged with the task of finding space in a historic saltbox house where, inherently, there was little to be found. With the collaborative expertise employed by Denise, her husband, architect Patrick M. Jones, AIA, and the building contractor, opportunities were found to maximize the building lot coverage and creatively find the desired solution. The existing two car garage was rebuilt as a two story structure, maximizing their lot and afforded space for a new master bedroom and bath suite on the new second floor,
as well as the new mudroom, laundry and butler’s pantry below. A rear addition provided a warm and inviting breakfast area which expanded the kitchen, looking out over their beautiful and personally curated gardens. “We wanted our home to reflect our personalities and the quality of life we cherish,” Steve shared. After completing their project, gatherings are more frequent and their family can’t imagine calling anyplace else home.
Jones emphasized the importance of collaboration in the master planning and design process. “Not a day goes by without us appreciating and enjoying how you blended our existing house with the new,” Claudia noted, highlighting the seamless integration of the additions with the original structure.
The scope of the project revolved around correcting circulation issues and functional challenges. Studying, stretching and pulling ideas that would conform to the current lot but would eloquently resolve all issues is what J2 Design Studio inherently does. We rise to the challenge and find solutions even when all hope is nearly lost. The J2 team focused on both architectural integration and interior design, ensuring that the home felt cohesive and reflective of the Deys’ style.
“The best solutions are born out of listening closely and collaborating openly with the homeowner and a talented team of professionals,” Jones explained. In this instance, custom solutions solved many challenges whether it be functional improvements or the seamless transition from existing to new construction. The homeowner’s vision, team expertise and our pre-construction process planning is what separates us apart from decorative designers.
Moving through common, quiet, utility and outdoor spaces effortlessly flows, one space to the next. For example, the coffered ceiling in the breakfast area cleverly conceals height transitions, more uniform flooring, unifies and expands space, “We strive to carve out charm and functionality in every detail,” Jones said.
The result is a home that beautifully marries tradition with modern living, allowing the family to showcase their colorful art collections and enjoy views of their lush gardens.
A homeowner’s instinct is to first call a contractor to solve their home woes. Oftentimes it becomes clear additional expertise and guidance is needed. In this instance, the relationship between the contractor and J2 Design Studio proved to be the key to success. The vision became clear and a cohesive team was realized. “It’s crucial to find the right team that understands the clients’ vision and can execute it with precision.”
As the Deys prepare to welcome friends and family into their newly transformed space this holiday season, they reflect on the journey. “We couldn’t be happier, especially when we share the space with our friends and relatives,” Claudia expressed.
Their home is not just a collection of spaces; rather it’s a canvas that tells their family story—a beautiful blend of function, comfort, and style. This holiday season, as they gather around their new kitchen, it’s clear that the Deys and J2 Design Studio have created a retreat that embodies their easy going lifestyle and new found love for entertaining.
The Dey family's newly designed saltbox house stands as a testament to the magic of thoughtful design and the art of re-imagination. As Denise Jones put it, “It’s all about creating a space where people feel at home, and we achieved that beautifully.”
This holiday, let us celebrate the joy of home—whether through renovation, gathering with loved ones, or simply appreciating the spaces that bring us together.

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”
As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.
Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.
One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.
Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.
These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just
about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”
We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.
To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.
The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.com

ARTICLE BY PATTI ZIELINSKI PHOTOGRAPHY BY LYONS & ASSOCIATES
Two sisters separated as children in Japan were reunited after seven decades by a dedicated team at Lyons & Associates.
Terry Jones searched for decades — and the world over — for a precious part of her life that she worried would be lost to time. At 76, Jones feared she would never know what happened to her younger sister, Masami Grey, who she last saw in a Japanese orphanage.
Their mother had abandoned the girls when they were four and one in an Osaka park in the 1940s. When Jones was adopted by an American military family, she lost touch with Grey. Thoughts of her sister and where she might be continued to haunt her as she raised her own children on American soil in Georgia.
Jones’ knowledge of Grey was limited: She knew their mother was Japanese and that their father was an African American soldier.
About 15 years ago, Jones began earnestly looking for Grey, armed with the only clues she had: her adoption documents written in Japanese. A breakthrough came in October 2022 when her daughter who worked for an airline bought her a ticket to travel to Japan for her birthday with the hopes she could further track her roots — kicking off an international investigation that brought Jones closer, then closer to solving the mystery of what became of her sister.
At her hotel in Japan, Jones enlisted the staff’s help in locating the government office where family records are kept, which still had the sisters’ adoption records, including the surname of the U.S. family that adopted Masami — Grey.
Her financial resources limited, Jones and her adult children set to work, scouring the internet for more leads until they located Grey's adoptive brother. Now in his 70s, he had enlisted in the military when he was 18 and lost touch with Grey but told Jones that she was disabled and was moved into a residential placement in New Jersey where they had lived all along.
More research yielded that Grey, 72, had been living in a care facility in Somerset County for close to a decade as a ward of the state. Jones connected with Grey's appointed guardian and began flying regularly from Georgia to New Jersey to visit her sister, who is non-verbal, deaf and required care.
Then Jones learned a heartbreaking fact from the staff: She was the first family member to visit her sister since she moved in.
She began calling attorneys to help her obtain guardianship of Grey and allow her to move her sister to Georgia — but the firms would either not take her case or quoted her fees she could not afford.
Then, in November 2023, Joanna Adu, a partner at Lyons & Associates in Somerville, who specializes in guardianship cases, picked up Jones’ call, changing the sisters’ lives forever.
Initially, Adu, too, quoted Jones as a retainer. “I knew this would not be a standard guardianship process, and I wasn’t sure how much time it would take. We did not know whether Grey's guardianship was in Somerset County or elsewhere, because we didn’t know where she lived previously,” Adu says. “And I could not identify a docket or court number since guardianships are presumptively confidential.”
But Jones, unsure if she could afford the retainer, asked for time to decide.
That night, Adu, a parent of a teenager with autism, couldn’t stop thinking about the sisters. “It was such a compelling story, and I felt I could definitely help. There were so many connections we shared: I also am African American and Japanese and have a family member with a disability. I understand how expensive it would have been for Terry to get guardianship of her sister. Adding to that, caring for her sister for the rest of her life would be a financial endeavor in and of itself,” she says.

“It was wonderful to see someone who was a ward of the state — forgotten for decades — being taken in and loved by a family who gives her the attention that she deserves.” - Joanna Adu
Adu decided she would help Jones navigate the legal process of transferring Grey’s guardianship from the state to her as well as to obtain court approval for her to relocate her sister to Georgia — at no cost to Jones. “I called Terry and told her I was going to take on her case pro bono, and she burst into tears,” Adu says.
The work was painstaking. Adu investigated how to structure the application, gathering proof to make a case for the court to grant Jones guardianship. The firm rallied around the cause, with associates and paralegals contributing their skills — including an associate’s friend who was a native Japanese speaker who volunteered to translate the adoption documents for the court
“It was really a Herculean effort on the part of the team,” says managing partner Terry Lyons. “It was spectacular.”
After the court accepted the application, the judge appointed an attorney to do due diligence to determine why Jones wanted guardianship. “The attorney met Masami at the facility and asked Terry to fly to New Jersey so he could see the dynamics between the sisters,” Adu says. “After the meeting, he called me and told me how moved he was by their relationship. He confirmed that Grey knew who Terry was and that although she liked where she was living, she wanted to live with her sister in Georgia.”
The hearing was held in June 2024, during which the attorney explained the basis for his support of granting Jones’ application for guardianship and requested that the court grant permission for Grey to move to Georgia as soon as possible.
The judge, likewise moved by the story, granted Jones’ application. Two days later, Grey flew to Georgia with Jones.
“What touched my heart during my initial conversation with Terry was when she said she had been wondering about her sister her whole life and looking for her. And now that they were both in their 70s, she really just wanted to spend the last chapter of their lives together,” Adu says.
Today, the sisters share simple pleasures, like getting manicures, along with more momentous moments: Grey recently took her first hot air balloon ride. “Freedom to be in the community is something that most people take for granted,” Adu says. “It was wonderful to see someone who was a ward of the state — forgotten for decades — being taken in and loved by a family who gives her the attention that she deserves.”

This butter is versatile and goes with just about anything. You can use this on top of bread, popcorn, veggies, as a sandwich spread and more.
• 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
• 4 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
• 1 tablespoon herb of your choice (dill, basil or oregano are my go-to herbs.)
• 1 clove garlic, chopped
• 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• cracked pepper to taste
Add all ingredients in a food processor (or mix by hand in a bowl). Transfer butter mixture on parchment paper or plastic wrap. Cover butter tightly and roll into a log. Place in refrigerator until firm. Enjoy!
