Short Month, Endless Love This February

Welcome to the month where ambitious New Year’s resolutions give way to heart-shaped boxes of chocolate. While February may be the shortest month, it doesn’t hold back—it’s packed with love, cozy moments, and the occasional frosty reminder that winter is still hanging around.

This is our Love Local issue, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to share it with you. For us, “love local” isn’t just a catchy phrase—it’s a way of life. Supporting local businesses strengthens our neighborhoods, keeps our favorite spots thriving, and makes the Somerset Hills the vibrant community we all cherish. This issue is dedicated to celebrating the incredible people and places that make our area shine.

One highlight this month is our February City List feature on page 16. You nominated your favorite local fine dining spots, florists, jewelers, day spas, and real estate agents, and the results are in! The businesses topping each category have earned the title of Readers’ Choice. Don’t forget to follow us on Instagram—@bridgewater_somerset_hills—to vote for future categories and keep supporting all things local.

Speaking of love, we’re proud to spotlight one of our community’s cherished traditions. On page 32, learn about Saint James School’s annual Blue Mass, which honors and prays for local police officers in the township and beyond.

Need some Valentine’s Day inspiration? If you’re feeling adventurous, try your hand at the Berry Sweet Love Trifle recipe on page 26. With layers of fresh berries, cream, and sponge cake, it’s a dessert worthy of sharing—or keeping all to yourself (we won’t judge!). If baking isn’t your thing, flip to page 42 to meet Karin Giamella, owner of Blue Sheep Bake Shop and the self-proclaimed “Director of Dessert Dreams.” She’s turning sweet treat fantasies into realities, one cupcake at a time.

So here’s to February: a month of love, connection, and celebrating the local businesses and people who make the Somerset Hills extraordinary. Let’s keep lifting each other up, one heartfelt moment and small business at a time.

With love (and maybe a trifle or two),

February 2025

Carly's Current Chapter

Local blogger blends life, style, and a love for small-town connections.

Carly Heitlinger-Riordan has built a vibrant platform of inspiration through her blog, CARLY. What began in 2008 as a personal outlet during her freshman year at Georgetown University has blossomed into a trusted lifestyle resource for women navigating the many stages of life. From parenting tips to style advice, Riordan uses her blog and social media platforms to share candid reflections, relatable anecdotes, and timeless inspiration.

“I started my blog as a way to express myself,” Riordan recalls. “It was the perfect creative outlet during a tough transition, and over time, it evolved into something much bigger—a reflection of my life and the community around me.”

One post, written during her senior year of college, captures her journey: she vented about the pressures of looming adulthood, a moment that resonated with many readers and exemplified her raw, relatable voice.

Originally intended as a diary-like space, CARLY struck a chord with readers who saw themselves in Riordan’s words. Her early posts detailed her life as a college student-athlete, sharing her struggles and triumphs alongside what she was wearing, reading, or exploring. As her life evolved, so did her blog.

A LIFE ROOTED IN NEW JERSEY

Now based in Madison, New Jersey, Riordan balances life as a mom to two sons, wife, and entrepreneur. Having grown up in Florida and later lived in Connecticut and New York, Riordan says she has embraced her life in New Jersey.

“I never envisioned myself living here, but I truly couldn’t love it more,” she says. “Madison is such a wonderful place to raise kids. The sense of community and the incredible women I’ve met have made it feel like home.”

Her connection to her community shines through in her content, which often highlights the joys of small-town living. Whether she’s sharing her favorite local spots, documenting her sons’ adventures, or hosting events with fellow moms, her love for New Jersey is evident.

“It’s not about perfection—it’s about finding what works for you.”

“You don’t have to throw extravagant parties or have a picture-perfect home. What matters most are the little moments and the effort to be present.” - Carly Heitlinger-Riordan

THE JOY OF HOBBIES

As a mother and business owner, Riordan emphasizes the importance of hobbies. “Hobbies help us step away from the noise,” she explains. “They offer a creative outlet that’s not tied to work or external expectations. For me, needlepoint has been a way to relax and create something tangible with my hands.”

Her love for needlepoint began before the pandemic and has since become a central part of her life, inspiring others to explore hobbies of their own. “There’s something special about making something with your hands,” she reflects. “It doesn’t have to be perfect—it just has to bring you joy.”

Her passion for hobbies also extends to her book club, which she started as a separate Instagram channel. “Books were my company during some challenging times,” she shares. “Now, I use my book-focused Instagram to connect with readers and authors. It’s amazing to see how Bookstagram and BookTok are changing the publishing world.”

AUTHENTIC MOTHERHOOD

Riordan’s authenticity resonates with her audience as she navigates motherhood with refreshing honesty. “You can be overwhelmed as a mom and still focus on the positives,” she says. “It’s about finding joy in the chaos and creating magical moments without overcomplicating things.”

She is mindful of protecting her children’s privacy while sharing snippets of their lives. “I’m careful about what I post,” she explains. “I want my kids to be part of my story without losing their sense of self or safety. It’s a balance I think about every day.”

Her approach to motherhood is grounded in simplicity and connection. “You don’t have to throw extravagant parties or have a

picture-perfect home,” she says. “What matters most are the little moments and the effort to be present.”

A PLATFORM FOR EMPOWERMENT

Through her blog and her book, Business Minded , Riordan champions female entrepreneurship and personal growth. She acknowledges the challenges she has faced along the way, such as building a sustainable brand in an ever-changing digital landscape. Her advice? “Success comes from balance,” she notes. “It’s not about perfection—it’s about finding what works for you.”

Her platform continues to evolve, offering insights into everything from home decor to needlepoint projects. Her classic style, often punctuated with bows, monograms, and timeless silhouettes, adds a signature touch to her posts.

LOOKING AHEAD

As she continues to grow her platform, Riordan remains committed to inspiring her readers to create a life they love. Whether sharing a cozy needlepoint project, a thoughtful book review, or a heartfelt parenting story, she reminds her audience to find beauty in the everyday.

With her signature classic style, creative ingenuity, and commitment to authenticity, Carly Heitlinger-Riordan proves that life’s best moments are found in the little things.

Berry Sweet Love

The Ultimate Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is all about celebrating love, and what better way to show someone you care than with a dessert that’s as sweet as they are? This Berry Sweet Love Trifle is a delightful mix of juicy berries, fluffy cream, and soft sponge cake—perfect for sharing with your special someone or treating yourself!

Ingredients:

• 1 pound fresh strawberries, sliced

• 1 pound fresh raspberries

• 1 package of vanilla sponge cake (or ladyfingers)

• 1 cup heavy whipping cream

• 8 oz cream cheese, softened

• 1/2 cup powdered sugar

• 1 tsp vanilla extract

• 1/2 cup raspberry jam or preserves

• Fresh mint for garnish (optional)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Cream Layer: In a large mixing bowl, beat the heavy cream until soft peaks form. In a separate bowl, beat the softened cream cheese with the powdered sugar and vanilla extract until smooth. Gently fold the whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture until combined, creating a light and fluffy cream layer. 2. Assemble the Trifle: In a trifle dish or large glass bowl, start by layering pieces of vanilla sponge cake (or ladyfingers) at the bottom. Drizzle a small amount of raspberry jam over the cake for extra flavor and sweetness. 3. Layer the Berries: Add a generous handful of sliced strawberries and raspberries on top of the cake layer. You can arrange them however you like to create a colorful contrast. 4. Add the Cream: Spoon a thick layer of the cream mixture over the berries, smoothing it out with a spatula. Repeat the layers (cake, jam, berries, cream) until you’ve filled the dish. 5. Top it Off: Finish with a final layer of berries and a light dusting of powdered sugar. For an extra touch, add a few fresh mint leaves to the top. 6. Chill and Serve: Refrigerate the trifle for at least 2-3 hours to allow the flavors to meld together. Serve chilled and enjoy this sweet, fruity treat perfect for sharing with your Valentine.

TIMELESS treasures

At Simms Jewelers in Bedminster, crafting custom jewelry is more than just creating a piece; it’s about preserving memories and telling stories through timeless designs. Sarah Sockolof, the passionate steward of this family-owned business, shares how Simms Jewelers transforms heirloom pieces and client visions into wearable works of art.

FROM VISION TO REALITY

The custom jewelry process at Simms begins with a simple conversation. Clients are encouraged to share their ideas, bring in heirloom pieces, or provide inspiration photos to guide the initial design. “The best starting point is communication,” Sockolof explains. “We discuss what you’re envisioning, what you like and don’t like, and explore the possibilities. If it’s an heirloom piece, we examine it to determine feasibility and begin creating a plan.”

This collaborative process includes creating mock-ups, digital renderings, or 3D models to ensure the design aligns with the client’s vision. From there, skilled craftsmen and industry-leading materials bring the piece to life. “It takes time, patience, and resourcefulness,” Sockolof notes, “but the result is a beloved piece you’ll wear with joy and pride.”

THE ART OF LISTENING

For Sockolof, listening is the cornerstone of a successful custom project. “It begins and ends there,” she says. “We take the time to understand what our clients want and reflect that in the final piece.” With access to top-tier gemstones, metals, and expert craftsmen, Simms ensures every creation is as unique as the person wearing it. “At the end of the day, a custom piece should be well made, well designed, and well suited to you,” Sockolof emphasizes.

BREATHING NEW LIFE INTO HEIRLOOMS

Some of the most rewarding projects at Simms involve reimagining heirloom jewelry. Sockolof recalls a particularly touching story: “One of our staff members had her mother’s engagement ring and wedding band, which featured sapphires and diamonds. She created two identical bands—one for herself and one for her mom—using the original stones. Seeing them open the signature Simms box together on Christmas was a moment I’ll never forget.”

Another favorite personal piece is a monogrammed pendant from Sockolof’s grandmother. “It has an engraving on the back that reads, ‘ILYMWEPY,’ which stands for ‘I love you more with every passing year.’ Sharing that story when people ask about it creates a beautiful bridge between past and present,” she said.

TIMELESS DESIGNS, MODERN TECHNIQUES

While trends come and go, Simms focuses on creating jewelry that stands the test of time. “We don’t chase fads,” Sockolof explains. “Our goal is to create something meaningful and enduring for each client.” However, modern innovations, like 3D modeling and specialized ring hinges for arthritic hands, offer exciting possibilities for customization and utility.

THE EMOTIONAL CONNECTION

The significance of custom jewelry goes beyond aesthetics. “Jewelry is symbolic,” Sockolof reflects. “It represents life’s milestones—engagements, anniversaries, and more. Helping someone reimagine a cherished piece or create a new one that resonates deeply is what makes this work so fulfilling.”

Whether it’s a grandmother’s diamond reborn as a pendant or a brand-new design inspired by a cherished memory, Simms Jewelers brings every vision to life with care and craftsmanship.

As the jewelry industry evolves, Sockolof is excited about new opportunities to merge artistry with technology. “Our new partnership with a company specializing in innovative ring hinges is a game-changer,” she shares. “It’s thrilling to explore how these advancements can help more clients wear their favorite pieces again.”

At Simms Jewelers, each custom project is a testament to the art of listening, the magic of transformation, and the joy of creating something uniquely yours.

HONORING HEROES

Blue Mass Celebrated at Saint James Church in Basking Ridge

On Wednesday, November 27, 2024, Saint James School in Bernards Township held its annual Blue Mass to honor and pray for local police officers from the township and surrounding areas. The event brought together students, teachers, staff, administrators, parents, police department representatives, and relatives of students who serve in law enforcement.

The Mass was celebrated by Reverend Monsignor Sylvester J. Cronin and Deacon Robert A. Barry. During his homily, Monsignor Cronin highlighted the selfless nature of police work, describing it as a vocation. “When these men and women put on their uniform to serve our communities, they are a target,” he said. Monsignor Cronin also emphasized the importance of gratitude, reminding the congregation that “we should be giving thanks every day, not just on Thanksgiving, for what these men and women do for our local communities.”

After the Mass, police officers in attendance were honored in front of the assembled students, teachers, staff, and parents. Monsignor Cronin thanked the officers again and offered words of encouragement, saying, “When your day is going tough, and nothing seems to be going right, always know that our school and students are behind you, praying for your safety.”

The officers received a standing ovation as the school choir led everyone in a heartfelt rendition of “God Bless America.” The Saint James School community expressed its deep appreciation for those who serve and protect local communities, towns, and the state.

ONCE & AGAIN CONSIGNMENT: CELEBRATING THE VALUE OF SECONDHAND GOODS

Gina Falco has transformed Once & Again

Consignment into a local hub for secondhand furniture, clothing, and accessories, blending her passion for interior design with her love for sustainable shopping. Taking over the business over 10 years ago, Falco brought her expertise in design to curate a shop that’s both stylish and eco-conscious.

ARTICLE BY CARLY MAC MANUS PHOTOGRAPHY BY GINA FALCO, ONCE & AGAIN CONSIGNMENT

“I have an interior design background, and when I took over Once & Again, I changed everything,” Falco explains. “I made it a place for once-loved furniture. It’s a great way to recycle—especially for young couples starting out who need affordable, high-quality furniture.”

Falco’s curated approach ensures only the best pieces find their way into the store. “I’m very picky about what comes in,” she says. “I have a great eye, and I personally curate all the furniture in both of my stores. It’s not just about resale; it’s about giving these pieces a new life.”

With stores that continuously evolve, Falco’s commitment to quality has earned her a strong reputation, with many local retailers calling her to take their unsold inventory. “As stores close down, I get brand new items at a rapid pace, sometimes faster than I can photograph them to put on display,” Falco adds.

In addition to furniture, Once & Again Consignment also specializes in estate sales. Falco manages the process from start to finish, providing clients with a seamless experience. “I stage the house, price the items, and run the sale. Afterward, I offer options for consignment or cleanout services,” she explains.

“I WANT TO HELP PEOPLE, WHETHER THEY’RE BUYING OR SELLING. IT’S ALL ABOUT THE COMMUNITY.”
- GINA FALCO

THE THRIVING THRIFT CULTURE

Thrifting has become more popular than ever, with many shoppers using it as an affordable and eco-friendly way to find great deals. Falco has seen this firsthand. “I get around 250 emails a day—people moving, stores closing, and the general public looking to sell their items,” she shares. “Thrifting has become a second job for some, flipping items for profit or simply enjoying the hunt for unique finds.”

Falco’s stores have become a go-to spot for millennials seeking affordable, stylish home decor and clothing. “Younger customers are really excited when they find great deals on shoes, handbags, or

jewelry,” she says. “Some resell them, while others treasure their finds.”

SUSTAINABILITY AND GIVING BACK

In the past decade, Once & Again Consignment has continued to grow and adapt, but the goal remains the same: to provide high-quality, sustainable goods at accessible prices. “It’s sinful to throw things away,” Falco says. “If you loved it once, someone else might need it.”

Falco’s dedication to sustainability extends beyond selling items. She offers her expertise to real estate agents and homeowners, helping them manage estate

sales or find new homes for unwanted items. “I help make it easy for people who are downsizing or moving. It’s not just about selling—it’s about giving people options,” she says.

EXPANDING INTO THE FUTURE

As Falco looks to the future, she’s considering new ways to grow Once & Again Consignment. “I’d love to find a large warehouse to expand the business and offer more services,” she reveals. “The demand for what we do is so strong right now. People want to recycle, they want to buy secondhand, and they want to make money while doing it.”

Ultimately, Falco’s vision is to continue educating customers on the benefits of thrifting while providing a space where both shoppers and consignors can connect and thrive. “I treat everyone the same,” she says. “I want to help people, whether they’re buying or selling. It’s all about the community.”

Once & Again Consignment, now in its 25th year, remains a cornerstone of Madison’s shopping scene. With a commitment to sustainability, quality, and customer service, Falco continues to build a legacy of love for secondhand goods, one treasured item at a time.

A Touch of Love, a Lot of Buttercream

ARTICLE BY CARLY MAC MANUS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL LAGO
INSIDE BLUE SHEEP BAKE SHOP
Karin Giamella
Classic Birthday Cake Cupcakes
“Organization is key. We set order limits and assign clear tasks so that everything runs smoothly.” — Karin Giamella

Where life’s sweetest moments come to life, Blue Sheep Bake Shop is more than a bakery—it’s a love story told in buttercream and ganache. Founded by Karin Giamella, the self-proclaimed “Director of Dessert Dreams,” this charming haven has grown from humble beginnings into a community favorite, blending artistic passion with delectable flavors.

Giamella’s journey, sparked by a single birthday cake for her son, has blossomed into a celebration of creativity and connection that defines every treat she and her team create.

FROM HOBBY TO SWEET SUCCESS

The journey began with a birthday cake for her son’s third birthday.

“I’ve always loved crafting and art,” Giamella says, “but it wasn’t until I was 33 that I discovered my passion for baking.” That one cake sparked interest from friends, then friends of friends, until she realized her creative outlet could blossom into something bigger.

Her talents were showcased nationally when she competed on Food Network and won a baking challenge, bringing her expertise to a wider audience. By 2011, Blue Sheep Bake Shop opened its first location in Green Brook. The bakery later moved to Somerville, and today operates a production kitchen in Bound Brook to meet its growing demand.

Among her standout projects: Giamella was commissioned by Princeton University to craft an intricate cake and baked 9,000 mini logoed cupcakes for PopSugar—a feat as impressive as it is delicious.

LOVE BAKED IN

Valentine’s Day is a particularly magical season at Blue Sheep Bake Shop, with every treat curated to celebrate love. From champagne-flavored cakes to heart-shaped confections, Giamella and her team craft desserts that capture the romance of the season.

“Inspiration can strike anywhere,” she shares. “I once saw a cute napkin at Target and thought, ‘That would make a great cake design.’”

One particularly unforgettable creation? A life-sized cake modeled after a handbag for a milestone birthday.

Signature Valentine’s items include intricately decorated macarons, themed gift boxes, and layered cakes bursting with decadent flavors. Every detail— from vibrant colors to playful designs—is infused with Giamella’s signature creativity.

A TEAM EFFORT

Behind every batch of cookies and every exquisitely frosted cake is a dedicated team working in harmony. Planning for Valentine’s Day begins weeks in advance. Giamella and her production manager coordinate everything from ingredient orders to decorating schedules, ensuring that each treat meets the shop’s high standards.

“Organization is key,” Giamella says. “We set order limits and assign clear tasks so that everything runs smoothly.”

The team’s collaborative spirit doesn’t end with logistics.

“When brainstorming new ideas, we bounce concepts off each other,” Giamella explains. “It’s a mix of research, creativity, and teamwork that brings our vision to life.”

COMMUNITY AT THE CORE

Blue Sheep Bake Shop’s name may hint at a sense of individuality, but its heart lies in community.

Growing up, Giamella and her sister jokingly referred to themselves as the “black sheep” of their family. When it came time to name the business, the idea of “Blue Sheep” felt like a fun twist that captured their playful spirit. Today, the shop embodies that same balance of uniqueness and inclusivity.

Local influences shape much of what the bakery offers, from flavor choices to collaborations with other businesses. Seasonal bundles, like pairing sweets with locally sourced flowers, add a personal touch that resonates with customers.

“We want our desserts to feel like they’re part of something bigger,” Giamella says.

Collaborating with local businesses like Osprey Lane Boutique, Evolve Clothing Gallery, and Brunch by De Martino, Giamella’s bakery is a hub for partnerships and a shared love of artistry.

CRAFTING JOY, ONE DESSERT AT A TIME

Perhaps what makes Blue Sheep Bake Shop truly special is the effort and heart poured into every creation.

Giamella sees her work as more than just baking; it’s about crafting experiences that bring people together. From the nervous customer ordering desserts for a surprise proposal

to the regulars who pop in for a midweek treat, every interaction is a reminder of why she started this journey.

“We’re not just selling desserts,” Giamella reflects. “We’re creating moments of joy and connection.”

This Valentine’s Day, those moments are sweeter than ever at Blue Sheep Bake Shop.

The difference between a good thing and a great thing is attention to detail.

This belief has shaped my journey as a real estate agent. In real estate, the smallest details can make the biggest impact. The way your home is presented—the staging, the photography, the marketing—may not seem like a big thing, but trust me, they are everything. We only have one chance to make a first impression, and as your agent, you can count on me to go the extra mile to ensure it’s unforgettable. My commitment to attention to detail is what sets me apart and turns good outcomes into great ones.

Whether you’re buying your dream home or selling a cherished property, I treat every client like family and approach each transaction as if it were my own. I understand the emotions, challenges, and excitement that come with real estate decisions, and am committed to walking alongside you every step of the way.

As a proud resident of Bernardsville for over a decade, I offer extensive knowledge of the community and its surrounding towns. My approach combines relationshipbuilding, strong negotiation skills, and a true sense of urgency to deliver the results you deserve.

When I’m not helping clients achieve their real estate goals, you’ll find me volunteering at my children’s schools, cheering at their sports events and making family memories.

Thank you to my incredible clients and this amazing community for honoring me with the Readers’ Choice Award. Your trust and support mean everything, and it inspires me to continue doing what I love—turning houses into homes and dreams into reality.

Let’s take the next step together—your dream home is waiting!

“Jennifer’s expertise was invaluable in the process, and she gently steered the 3 decision-makers in our search... even when all 3 of us had sometimes conflicting priorities. She was our orchestra conductor, somehow getting us on the same page. Simply put, she was MASTERFUL!”

THE SCOTTSDALE LURE OF

The endless skies of blue are interrupted only by cacti rising majestically from the ground, arms reaching skyward, and palm trees, which are often adorned by lights that twinkle when the sun sets. There are vistas of open desert, rising mountains, and even the lush green of the locale’s many golf courses. And, of course, there are the vibrant shopping, dining, art, and event scenes, too.

Scottsdale is a city located in Metro Phoenix in Arizona, which as a whole is nicknamed “The Valley of the Sun” for its more than 330 days of sun each year—one of the reasons the area is a draw for visitors. With few rainy days, it’s easy to plan your daily activities without worry. Yes, though, the summer gets hot. But the rest of the year? Perfection.

Scottsdale is a mix of a resort destination, city, and suburbs, with more open desert the further north you venture. To the south is Downtown Scottsdale—also known as Old Town Scottsdale—which is a mix of old Southwestern charm

(including the legendary cowboy saloon, Rusty Spur Saloon); modern eateries from famed chefs; lots of shopping at small boutiques and specialty shops; the Arts District , which is filled with art galleries; and even tasting rooms from Arizona wineries located along the famed Scottsdale Wine Trail

Nearby is Scottsdale Fashion Square , one of the nation’s premier shopping destinations. While you’ll find many usual retailers there, there are also more than 40 luxury brands, including Christian Louboutin, Bottega Veneta, and Louis Vuitton.

Heading north are open-air shopping destinations Scottsdale Quarter and Kierland Commons , which sit across the street from each other. Take the afternoon or evening to stroll through, exploring the shops, restaurants, and activity destinations such as the indoor mini-golf destination Puttshack . What else is there to see and do? Plenty.

FROM RELAXATION TO SHOPPING TO GOLF TO SIGHTSEEING, THIS DESTINATION HAS IT ALL

PLAY

Like golf? There are more than 200 golf courses in the Scottsdale area. Whether you’re a pro or just starting out, there is a course for you. One of the most popular in the area is the TPC Scottsdale as it is the locale of the WM Phoenix Open, the most-attended golf tournament in the world.

For most of the year, Scottsdale boasts warm temperatures, making spending a day splashing in a pool a perfect choice. Many local resorts have pool areas that feature fun extras such as water slides, lazy rivers, and even a cooled sand beach. And even if you’re not an on-site guest, you can often purchase a day pass to be on-site through ResortPass.com.

Of course, there’s also plenty of outdoor recreation in Scottsdale. Pinnacle Peak in North Scottsdale is a popular mountain to hike (as is the iconic Camelback Mountain, which is located in nearby Phoenix), and the Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt is a park and trail system spread over 11 miles. Kids love McCormickStillman Railroad Park , which boasts a small-scale train that circles the park and plenty of play areas.

A destination filled with numerous attractions is A rizona Boardwalk , a center that includes Butterfly Wonderland , OdySea Aquarium , Ripley’s Believe It or Not! , Museum of Illusions , and more.

CULTURE

The beauty of Scottsdale’s Sonoran Desert led famed architect, Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), to build Taliesin West , his winter home and desert laboratory, in a mountainside in East Scottsdale. Today, there are daily tours of the UNESCO World Heritage site, and events are offered often.

However, Wright’s architecture isn’t the only art in the area. Beyond the Arts District in Downtown Scottsdale, there is public art all around the city, from sculptures to murals, so definitely keep your eyes open!

There are also museums such as Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West , a Smithsonian Affiliate, which showcases items from the Greater Western region, and the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art , affectionately known as SMoCA.

On Thursday evenings, there’s a free public ArtWalk in the Arts District, where galleries stay open later. Wander the streets and galleries, often against a backdrop of live music and even artist appearances.

DINING AND NIGHTLIFE

From mom-and-pop restaurants to those run by James Beard Award-winning chefs and celebrity chefs, Scottsdale has it all. There’s Luna by Giada , by famed chef and TV personality Giada de Laurentiis; Uchi by James Beard Award-winning chef Tyson Cole; FnB by James Beard Award-winning chef Charleen Badman; and The Americano, which is helmed by celebrity chef and TV personality Beau MacMillan. Other local favorites are chef Joey Maggiore’s new The Italiano; Postino, for bruschetta and wine; Ocean 44 for seafood; and Old Town Tortilla Factory—which is set in a historic 75-year-old adobe home—for Southwestern with a Mexican twist.

If you’re looking for a night out, Downtown Scottsdale has the biggest concentration of clubs and bars. The walkable area has Dierks Bentley’s Whiskey Row, El Hefe , Boondocks Patio & Grill , and many others.

If a more upscale lounge is your scene, check out the new Tell Your Friends speakeasy in North Scottsdale, located under The Americano restaurant.

EVENTS

Scottsdale is also known as a destination for events that draw attendees from around the world. Depending on your hobbies, time your visit to coincide with the one that interests you most. Golf lovers (and those who like to party) head to Scottsdale for the popular PGA tournament WM Phoenix Open , dubbed “The Greatest Show on Grass,” also includes concerts with wellknown musical acts. Auto enthusiasts flock here for Auto Week , which includes the famous Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction . In late February and through March, the MLB’s Spring Training takes over the Valley, with Scottsdale Stadium becoming the home of the San Francisco Giants. There’s showmanship at the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show and rivalry on the field at the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Classic , which draws players from around the world and features polo matches, a fashion show, parties, and more. And in 2025, Art Week , the next big event in the art world, debuts in Scottsdale.

NEARBY

While there’s so much to do, see, and experience in Scottsdale proper, there’s also much to see nearby. Make sure to experience the Musical Instrument Museum (affectionately known as the MIM), which is the world’s only global instrument museum. Desert Botanical Garden features an array of desert plants, and Phoenix Art Museum has an impressive collection of art. And, of course, the Phoenix Zoo is a perfect place for both kids and adults alike.
