Making an Impression
H
ello, South Charlotte! We are once again excited to share the scenes and stories we've collected in the past weeks.
Editor Kacy Burke and Publisher George Zorrilla
With the first issue under our belt, we can’t wait to see what South Charlotte has for us in the coming months. We’ve been overwhelmed with all of the beauty and sense of community we’ve been offered as we work to add something back through South Charlotte Lifestyle.
Our goal from the start has been to be a positive, productive member of the community and make an impression among our neighbors and peers. Not just any impression, of course – the best one possible! While we certainly hope we have done and will continue to do such, what we are even more excited about is the impression you have made on us! So far South Charlotte Lifestyle has been welcomed and embraced by our wonderful community of residents, merchants, artists, and free spirits alike.

MOBILE MAMMOGRAPHY GOES THE DISTANCE Charlotte Radiology is expanding – again
We Specialize in Interior Door Replacement & Whole Home Organization
– its mobile mammography services by adding a fourth mobile breast center to its fleet. Responding to increased demand for convenient access to early screening for breast cancer, the new mobile unit will help Charlotte Radiology serve more women in Mecklenburg, Gaston, Union and York counties. And well beyond. The new mobile unit, out on the road as of April 1, is the first in the Carolinas and only the 13th in the United States to offer digital breast tomosynthesis, more commonly known as 3-D mammography. 3-D mammography creates multiple images that allow radiologists to look at different layers of breast tissue. It’s of greatest benefit to women with dense breast tissue and women having their first mammogram. Exams can be billed to insurance, and there’s no additional cost to the hosting organization. A minimum number of patients is required. Learn more and view a calendar of events at MobileBreastCenter.com. To schedule an event, contact Katie Yarborough at 704.334.7812.

REVAMP YOUR LIVING SPACE (CON TI N U ED)
“Don’t be scared of color outdoors.“
20
South Charlotte Lifestyle | May 2016
Find your purpose:
Before you start decorating, it is important to think about what your space will be used for. Are you looking for a place to enjoy dinner? Maybe you are just looking for a place to nap, read and relax. Figure out what you’ll use the space for and don’t feel like you are limited to just one function. You can use furniture to make your options endless. Whether you entertain or not can decide how your outdoor furniture will be arranged. “If someone doesn’t entertain very much and likes seclusion, we always include a sofa, a couple chairs and a coffee table,” says Hays. “If they need some dining, we will tuck a small dining area in a corner.” Everything else in the room should be centered on relaxation.
ALL FURS WELCOME No matter where purchased!
“For people who like to entertain, we make scenarios,” she said. Hays suggests a great set-up for people who like to entertain is a four-chair circle to ensure your guests feel comfortable. If you include a dining table, put them close to the conversation area to make all of your guests feel involved.
Embrace Colors:
“Don’t be scared of color outdoors.” "This is when you can have a sense of whimsy and throw some cute and colorful pillows out there,” she says. “Another way to add color is through lots of flowers and plants.“ Area rugs are a good way to find the colors you want to use to make the indoor and outdoor decor flow. “I always suggest starting with an outdoor area rug.

It pulls the area together and gives you a color to build on,” says Hays.
Choose Your Style:
Matching style indoors and outdoors is important as well. You don’t want to purchase something provincial if you have a cottage-style home. Summer states, “There is a style and a fit of outdoor furniture for anybody from the very simple lines to provincial, Queen Anne leg, wrought iron.” She suggests deep seating with back and seat cushions 5-7 inches deep. This encourages use and makes your space into an extended living room.
Invest in Outdoor Furniture:
Furnishing your outdoor space can add up quickly. Financially, it is a big commitment to purchase outdoor furniture but don’t feel like you have to buy it all at once. “Some of our customers say, 'Let’s start with the deep seating and next year I’ll do dining.' It’s a commitment financially for these pieces but they will have them for the rest of their lives,” says Hays. Overall, your outdoor area should be somewhere fun and a place you can’t wait to get to when you get home. Tatum Galleries has over 25 years of experience in offering furniture and interior design services for residential and commercial customers. All of their employees are highly trained in interior design services to better serve their customers. expressing the importance of taking great pride in your appearance. Wilson got the idea for his business after he was repeatedly approached by others regarding his wardrobe. He then had an epiphany that sparked the birth of his now successful company, William Wilson Clothing. When Wilson started his company he knew it was imperative that he research and study the market so he could gain a competitive edge, so he began conducting online research on high-end luxury brands, such as Rolex, Bentley and Rolls-Royce. He also visited alteration shops where he would sit for hours and watch suits be taken apart and put back together to learn how to tailor various types of clothing. Now in his elegant showroom, you will find a plethora of high-end items, including tailored suits, t-shirts, ties, bow ties, neck

ties, socks, cufflinks and tie clips priced to suit a variety of budgets depending on the material used. Tailored suits include pants, a jacket and a pocket square matching the lining of the suit, he says. Wilson says many men do not dress for success for various reasons, including not being able to afford a tailored suit, but he still encourages them to dress for success within their budget. Men can accomplish this look with a lower budget by staying wellgroomed and purchasing a suit at a lower price point and having it tailored to fit their body structure, he says. As a designer, Wilson does not only cater to men, he has also created exclusive designs for women. Recently, he expanded his brand by offering custom-made jeans tailored to fit

"Women were my inspiration when deciding to offer custom jeans because many of them have a hard time finding jeans that fit properly," he says. Aside from the quality of his clothing, Wilson keeps his competitive edge by offering intimate and exclusive consultations. "I love to innovate around the client and I am able to do this by providing a private one-on-one session with them to find out who they are as well as their goals and objectives. As a clothier I want to

make sure my clients are comfortable in their clothing," he says. Wilson says he has definitely been blessed to have met and worked with a diverse selection of individuals. "I’ve had the opportunity to work with many celebrities and athletes over the years, including D.L. Hughley, Eddie Griffin, George Lopez, Ray Brown as well as James Anderson and complete projects for the Grammy’s and Oscars," he says. Although he has had and still has many celebrities as clients his target market has been and will always be business people. “I’ve always said that I’d rather have ten people that worked at Bank of America Corporate Center than ten guys who play at Bank of America Stadium.” His reasoning for this philosophy is because individuals who work in corporate America and their peers are going to wear a suit five days a week while athletes and their peers will tend to buy fewer suits. Brandon Williams, a former Panthers and now Tight End for the Miami Dolphins, contacted Wilson at the end of his rookie year with

the full intentions and aspirations of “stepping up his game." Williams had met with other designers and felt as though they were extremely expensive and that he would be wasting his money. "When I consulted with Wilson and viewed his suits I knew I would be getting my money’s worth," Williams says. Williams was originally wearing suits that didn’t quite fit his physique, which further prompted his initial contact with Wilson regarding his fashionably designed tailored suits. “His suits are really unique and I like how he tends to keep up with the trends”, says Williams. Williams considers himself a trendsetter and always accessorizes to enhance his custom suits and include his own style. "I try to make sure the tie goes with the shirt and that everything coordinates. The type and color of the watch I wear will depend on the color of my shirt or suit," he says. Whether you need a tailored suit or even accessories that fit your body type and needs, Wilson is a designer that can help you, like

Williams, “step your game up”. Wilson is not your average businessman simply because his motivation to be successful has not only impacted the fashion industry, but also various communities. He is a passionate advocate for victims of domestic violence and loves to bring awareness to the topic with the hopes of breaking the cycle. He feels strongly about this topic, especially since he constantly witnessed the abuse of his mom as a child. “I remember when I was 13 years old I made a decision that my mom was going to have at least one man in her life that she was proud of and I said if that has to be me then it’s just going to be me," says Wilson. Wilson hopes to continue expanding his brand throughout the Charlotte area as well as other locations and to continue to leave a positive, lasting impression on individuals in various communities. 26

Travel Trend WHY LOCALS ARE GETTING EXCITED ABOUT CULINARY TOURISM
T
ARTICLE RONI FISHKIN
he growing travel trend of culinary tourism gives travelers a chance to combine their love of eating and drinking with their passion for globetrotting.
Culinary tourism has grown in popularity since it first emerged in the early
2000’s and has allowed foodies the opportunity to enjoy new destinations while indulging in local or regional cuisines and wines. The exponential growth of the trend runs parallel to the increased interest in tv food channels, food documentaries and an increased presence online with food blogs. The possibilities are endless for travelers looking to book a culinary focused vacation. Tours and river cruises with food-themed itineraries are being offered with greater frequency; many focus around a particular event or region. Cooking classes and demonstrations are popular and offer a different opportunity to sample food in a particular destination and provide a welcome change from the usual itineraries. Increasingly, specialty restaurants at hotels, resorts and cruise ships now boast celebrity chefs and their inspired menus. A bold new partnership between Seabourn and the world-renowned American chef and restaurateur Thomas Keller is enhancing the gourmet experiences on these luxury, small ships. Keller, who’s repertoire includes The French Laundry, Per Se and Bouchon, is the first and only American-born chef to hold multiple three-star ratings from the prestigious Michelin Guide. Now, he is developing an array of dishes for the Seabourn fleet, resulting in an “unrivaled dining experience.” A good travel professional can help food and wine connoisseurs pair their love of good cuisine with their desire for exploring the world. Whether you want to dine at sea – or on another continent – an experienced agent can successfully pair you with the vacation of your dreams.

Parting Thoughts
Sitting on a Bridge in Freedom Park WORDS KACY BURKE PHOTOGRAPHY BRIAN JACKSON
L
ast month George Zorrilla, publisher of South Charlotte Lifestyle, and I paid a visit to Freedom Park in South Charlotte. Truth be
known, we were there simply to take headshots for the upcoming issue of SCLS. The visit, however, ended up serving as so much more than just another photo opp. After the shoot I decided to take a walk around Freedom Park and take in all of the beautiful scenery and exceptional Charlotte springtime weather. After a few minutes I stumbled upon a bridge with a vacant bench and decided to take a seat. Sitting there, I couldn’t help but notice the life in the park. Every form one could think of, from ducks casually floating along in the water, to children climbing and playing on swings, to the beautiful Dogwoods blooming in the warm sunlight. There was an early morning runner who smiled and waved, then a couple with a young daughter who had a zealous and excited interest in the activity of squirrels. A local artist working on a painting of our beautiful Freedom Park Bridge. A businessman enjoying a break. A dreamer, napping on the oh-so-green grass. I couldn't help but be reminded why I so love Charlotte, especially
our little nook of it. Where else can you step out of the hustle and bustle right into serenity? Where else can you snooze quietly amid all of the activity that goes into making a living, breathing metropolis? Where else can you snap a picture of nature's pure and simple gifts on any given day? And then there is the bridge - Yes, the iconic Freedom Park Bridge that has become something of a symbol of our exceptional community, and rightly so as I have seen so many members of our community working to connect with one another across boundaries of industry, religion, and personal identity. I hope this continues to be our goal and our success as we move forward. It's profound what one can learn to appreciate sitting on a bridge in Freedom Park. 34
