Happy June, South Charlotte! W
JUNE 2016 publisher
George Zorrilla | George.Zorrilla@LifestylePubs.com
e hope you’re ready to heat things up with our first issue of Summer, 2016! As always, we’re excited to be a part of such a buzzing and blooming community and share what’s going on with our friends and neighbors here in South Charlotte.
In this issue, we are especially excited to feature a few local businesses and organizations we feel are really doing their part to participate in and add to the South Charlotte way of life through endeavors that are both creative and beneficial to our residents. We’ll take a look at a pair of local designers who refuse to accept traditional standards of beauty, as they work to make custom-designed clothes that are sustainable and tailored to flatter everyone’s figure. We’re also stopping by Charlotte’s newest dining option - the world's first ever Kronut Truck - to try out and share some tasty new gourmet treats before giving you front row seats to Opera Charlotte’s latest performances with access to the upcoming season of events. Three issues in and we are even more thrilled to be a part of this beautiful community and hope you enjoy these stories and let us know what we can do to help spotlight the good works in South Charlotte. Thank you for being our neighbors!

WHY CHARLOTTE IS THE NEXT BIG BEER CITY The Queen City is becoming a king of craft beer in the U.S. On National Beer Day in April, Charlotte had a lot to celebrate! As one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S., Charlotte is on the rise—and so is its craft beer scene. Here are just a few reasons why Charlotte should be on your radar as one of the nation’s next major beer cities. 1. THE STATS SUPPORT IT.
From a fast-growing brewery scene to increased craft beer sales and visitation to area breweries, Charlotte’s got a lot when it comes to craft beer—and we’ve got the numbers to prove it. • From 2012 to 2015, the number of breweries in the Charlotte area has grown from seven to 24. This represents a 242.8 percent increase compared to a 77.8 percent growth nationally.* • The current brewery count within Charlotte city limits is 14, 28 within the Charlotte region† and 15+ more currently in planning. The region accounts for nearly 20 percent of the 150+ breweries in North Carolina. • Nearly one in five Charlotte residents visits a Charlotte-area brewery when hosting friends or family in town, representing an 86 percent growth from 2014 to 2015.** • From 2012 to 2015, the number of brewery jobs in the region increased from 152 to 527 (a 246 percent increase).*** • From 2014 to 2015, Charlotte experienced a 21.8 percent increase in craft beer sales, ranking fifth in the U.S.**** • The Charlotte region saw $985.7 million in total economic impact from craft breweries in 2014.*** 2. THE CHARLOTTE AREA HAS SEEN EXPLOSIVE BREWERY GROWTH (WITH NO SIGNS OF STOPPING).
Since 2009, the Charlotte craft beer scene has seen exponential growth with more than two dozen breweries opening one by one in hip and artsy neighborhoods like NoDa and South End. And areas like LoSo (Lower South End) are making a name for themselves as the next big drinking district in the city. Beyond city limits, towns like Cornelius, Mooresville and Concord have caught the craft beer buzz with pockets of breweries opening just a short drive from Uptown Charlotte. These enclaves are continuing to develop a strong craft beer presence with craft breweries, bottle shops and beer bars sprinkled throughout while also welcoming new craft distilleries and cideries to the scene. And with the opening of the LYNX Blue Line light rail extension in 2017, access to many of these hoppy hot spots via public transportation will become easier than ever. 3. THE CITY’S BREWS AND CRAFT BEER CULTURE ARE GARNERING NATIONAL ATTENTION.
With dozens of breweries opening over the course of seven years, Charlotte has made a name for itself on the nation’s and world’s craft beer map. And brewmasters, inspired by local ingredients, unique methods and shapeshifting philosophies, have poured their hearts into their handcrafted creations—and they’re getting noticed, too. Accolades: • Fortune called Charlotte “the newest hub for craft beer” and one of “the best new cities for beer lovers.” • The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery was named the “best brewery tour in the nation” by USA Today’s 10Best readers in 2014. 4. CHARLOTTEANS LOVE THEIR LOCAL BEER, CREATING A HIGH SUPPLY AND DEMAND FOR IT EVERYWHERE IN THE CITY.
Locals and visitors have fallen in love with the community vibe and the unique setting of each brewery in Charlotte, but more importantly, they‘ve developed a strong preference for the homegrown beer churned out by each.
• HAND CRAFTED FURNITURE • BEAUTIFUL MOUNTAIN ELEGANCE AND ONE-OF-A KING FINDS • FULL INTERIOR DESIGN OVER 30 YEARS EXPERIENCE • ENTIRE LINE OF OUTDOOR AND PATIO FURNITURE
The high demand for local suds has resulted in hundreds of restaurants and bars adding them to their tap lines and the majority of attractions across the region featuring them; there are few places in Charlotte you can go and not find a local brew to enjoy. And brewery or beer bar hopping (most with gorgeous patios) has become a weekend ritual for Charlotte-area residents and a magnetic draw for visitors with cravings for local brews. In fact, according to data from the Untappd app, the top five beers within a 15-mile radius of Charlotte are all local, including: NoDa Brewing Company’s Hop, Drop ‘n Roll IPA and Jam Session; The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery’s Copper Amber Ale and Dunkel; and Birdsong Brewing Company’s Higher Ground IPA. 5. THE CHARLOTTE AREA HAS BEER TOURS AND FESTIVALS GALORE.
As craft beer has continued to dominate more and more of Charlotte’s cultural scene, the city has

FDA TESTING REQUIRED ON IMPORTED OLIVE OIL Don't fall victim to olive oil fraud. On a recent 60 Minutes story this year, it exposed Italy's olive oil business has been corrupted with tampered and diluted olive oil in ways that could affect American consumers. By the time this heavenly liquid reaches American shores, much of it has lost its luster, often due to tampering. Some estimates reveal that 75-80 percent of the oil sold in the U.S. grocery stores does not meet the legal grades for extra-virgin oil. In April, congress directed the FDA to start testing imported olive oil. So, what's a foodie to do? Since freshness matters, located in the heart of Ballantyne, The Olive Tap is a tasting emporium, featuring a wide variety of gourmet olive oils and balsamic vinegars. Each and every 100% Extra Virgin Olive Oil must be approved by the Official Olive Tap Tasting Panel. They offer artisan products sourced from the very best producers in the world, and your choices will be bottled for you on the spot. They pride themselves on freshness, purity, and distinctive flavor profiles, and procure only the finest oils and vinegars. (For more info

nyone who has ordered something online can tell you it’s just about impossible to find the perfect item. Shopping for clothes in-store allows you to touch and feel the products. But what you have in mind–a certain color, style, or fabric–may not be available and searching for it can lead to a dead end. Ordering items custom made has traditionally been an option only for the wealthy but SPS Designs is looking to change that. Best friends and owners of SPS Designs, Monica Randolph and Alyssa Hope, are both committed to making quality, custom clothing to fit women of all shapes and sizes, at a reasonable price. Hope has been making clothes for as long as she can remember. “I’ve been sewing my whole life. My mother sewed all of my clothes when I was young so I learned from her,” says Hope. She has been sewing nonstop ever since.
Hope and Randolph’s business began with making custom clothes for their friends. “We have a hard time fitting clothes because we’re curvy girls so I started making clothes for us and people would always ask where we got them,” says Hope. That’s how SPS Designs started. SPS Designs offers a full interactive experience. Not only are customers able to chat directly with Randolph and Hope but they also become the designer. SPS Designs

iana’s Blinds and Designs, Inc. is owned and operated by mother-daughter duo, Diana Weimer and Heather Tollison. The company’s services include professional measuring, installation, design advice and repair of Hunter Douglas products. Weimer has over 30 years in the window treatment business. At first, she was creating window treatments when people were using mini blinds and valances and began selling Hunter Douglas products to compliment her custom items. Weimer recently retired from making window treatments to focus on the rapidly expanding Hunter Douglas line, which has over 26 categories of different blinds, shades and shutters. Blinds, shades and shutters offer numerous benefits. Some of the biggest benefits are light control, privacy, sun protection and they help with sound. Window coverings can also bring a different ambiance to the room. “After installing our products the other day, a client immediately said oh, wow, now it’s starting to feel like home instead of just a house,” says Weimer.
18
South Charlotte Lifestyle | June 2016
If someone is interested in purchasing new window coverings, Weimer suggests that they stop by the Diana’s Blinds and Designs, Inc. showroom so they can be educated on what is available. “Someone can learn about the different blinds, shades, and shutters, and motorization options we have to offer if they come visit our showroom. Displays are backlit so customers can see how the light affects the product,” says Weimer. Customers can also learn about pricing by stopping by the showroom. “Blinds are an investment in something that lasts for many years. You are going to live with these products for a long time, so we want it to be the right product,” says Weimer.
Weimer and Tollison put a lot of time and effort into helping a customer find their perfect window covering. “We ask a lot of questions to find what your needs are, what you are trying to accomplish then we find the right product for you. With 30 plus years of experience, it gives us an advantage,” says Weimer. For instance, if someone lives on a lake or a golf course and doesn’t want to obstruct their view, Diana’s Blinds and Designs has products for that. If a customer has odd shaped windows, the company has products for that as well. “We’re really customer service oriented and try to find products to fit any needs. It’s not all about the sale. It’s about customer satisfaction,” says Weimer. Weimer and Tollison are fully committed to providing the Charlotte area with blinds, shades and shutters and have no plans of stopping anytime soon. Diana’s Blinds and Designs is the only Hunter Douglas gallery in the Charlotte area. If you are interested in upgrading you window coverings, visit DianasBlindsAndDesigns.com.

OPERA CAROLINA'S UPCOMING 68TH SEASON
O
pera Carolina’s new season will bring a promising mix of repertoire, with three different operas to be staged at Belk Theater, North Carolina Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. The season will open October 22, 2016 with Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville.” It will continue with Verdi’s “La Traviata” and end with Puccini’s “The Girl of the West.” Composer James Meena invites both avid opera lovers and those who have never been to see a performance. Meena says, “The season has something for everyone. We have two well-known operas, The Barber of Seville (Comedy), La Traviata (one of the most beloved tragedies in Opera) and we have The Girl in the West, which has never been performed in Charlotte. We always try to give the audience balance by giving them something familiar and something that is new and different. That’s important to what we do because we have a CONTINUED > very diverse constituency.”

The Season: The Season:
The Barber of Seville, Oct. 22, 27 and 30: Rossini’s madcap The Barber of Seville, a work so ingrained in popular culture that its theme and songs have been sampled by Looney Tunes. A busybody barber plays matchmaker for a wealthy customer trying to land the woman of his dreams. But he has competition from the girl’s old guardian, which leads to comic complications. La Traviata, Jan. 22, 26 and 28: Verdi’s timeless story of a love that’s forbidden because of class differences. It’s the precursor to Greta Garbo’s classic movie Camille, Richard Gere’s modern-day white knight rescuing Julia Roberts’ Vivian in Pretty Woman and was told again – to a pop soundtrack – in Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge! And it’s a not-sorare example of an opera based on a true story. The 19th century Parisian courtesan Marie Duplessis was the real-life tragic love interest that inspired Alexander Dumas’ The Lady of the Camelias. The Girl of the West, April 23, 27 and 29: The season ends with an operatic take on the Wild West in partnership with the Puccini Festival in Lucca Italy and the New York City Opera. This year’s theme is, “Life Set to Music.” All of the pieces demonstrate opera’s timelessness and authenticity. Meena says,

It takes months for Opera Carolina’s Marketing and Creative team to come up with the theme and repertoire but all of the seasons have the same goal, to connect the Charlotte community to art. Meena said, “For most people, Opera is something that is foreign and not something they do on a daily basis. There are a lot of stereotypes of the overweight singer screaming in a foreign language over an orchestra still, so we try to come up with thematic ideas that connect people to what we do.” Diversity also plays a big part in helping Opera Carolina connect to the community. “If you look at the members of the principal cast of these shows it is very diverse from a cultural standpoint. Meena and everyone at Opera Carolina are ready to kickoff the 2016-2017 season. Meena states, “I am really excited about this season. It is going to be beautiful from the standpoint of production and artistry and it is going to be important as we continue building relationships with our diverse community.” Tickets will go on sale August 1. Diabetes and High Blood Pressure, or food allergies. “About 60-80 percent of our customers have some sort of health impairment or food allergy,” says West. Southern Food at Home is changing lives through their meal delivery service. West said, “We’ve had women look at us and say I truly think you saved my husband’s life because his diabetes were really bad before your services and now he’s able to live a much healthier life.” In another Southern Food at Home family, each member had different food allergies and the mother was forced to fix four different meals each night. With Southern Foods at Home’s services, she was able to sit down and have dinner with her family for the first time. Southern Foods at Home customizes meals based on health concerns and the families’ preferences. “Our meal delivery is 100 percent customized, down to the exact number of pieces of protein,” says West. LOCAL RECIPE CHEF ROBERT ADLER'S TIPS FOR MOUTH-WATERING RIBS ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY ROBERT ADLER
W
arm weather means BBQ and that always means ribs. Incredible beef or pork ribs will take 4-6
hours or longer to make, are tender but not falling off the bone, and no cheating by boiling or steaming allowed! Here's how: 1.

grease, sprinkle the rub, wrap them and refrigerate overnight. Rub: combine 1/4 cup sugar, 1/8 cup dried brown sugar, 4 tbsp. coarse Kosher salt, 4 tsp. chili powder, 2
tsp. cumin, 1 tsp. each black pepper, garlic, onion powder, and seasoned salt, ½ tsp. cayenne 2. Preheat your grill to 275 degrees. Cooking will be on indirect heat not directly over the flame. Put an aluminum pan under the cooking grate with enough apple juice and water to cover the bottom. If a pan won’t fit under the grate put the ribs in a rack and into the pan on top of the grate. If smoking, try apple, hickory, or pecan wood. Baste every 30 minutes with pan drippings and add more liquid to the pan as needed. 3. When the meat has pulled back 1/4-3/8 inch from the bone they’re almost done, you’ll have great bark, and the ribs will be tender. Remove ribs and the pan from the grill, heat to 400 degrees, put the ribs back on and quickly baste lightly with your favorite sauce (make sure the sauce is warm) turning every 2-3 minutes 2 times. Cut ribs down the bone so you’ll have two bone sections and three pieces of meat. 4. Serve quickly and accept all the praise. For more great recipes, check out Chef Robert Adler at Ernie's BBQ. 34
