Saluting Individuality

JULY 2016

H

appy July, South Charlotte readers!

Naturally, we are excited to wish you a high-spirited Fourth of July and hope to see you experience all the great benefits of our freedom in this great city of ours. Could there be a better place to be this summer? We think not...

In honor of our independence, this issue is dedicated to individuality. Please join us in saluting folks in our neighborhood who are holding true to the spirit of individuality by following their callings and making their marks on our environment. Niche businesses in our area, Flyaway Geese and Boardroom Advisory Group, are breaking molds by offering services unique to Charlotte business owners, while proving success is not a matter of following the masses, but of carving out your own space. We've featured these businesses to show how their individual talents are adding to our community. In following with that, we've also taken the time to speak with artist Marcy Gregg, who tells her story of strength, growth, and regrowth with her most powerful tool her paintbrush. Finally, you'll see options for spending your individual time in South Charlotte, whether that means staying at home and grilling out with friends and family, or going out and networking with our friends at Discovery Place at their monthly "Science on the Rocks" event. These are just a few glimpses at how the spirit of the individual is alive and booming in South Charlotte. As always, we hope to continue to be a contributing member of this great community and look forward to seeing you out and about as we celebrate this great month of independence.

Decorarting Den owner, Patrice Hawkins, honored at annual company conference.

CHARLOTTE DESIGN PROFESSIONAL EARNS TOP INTERNATIONAL HONORS Patrice Hawkins, owner of The Hawkins Team-Decorating Den Interiors franchise and Master License in Charlotte, was named 2015 Field Manager of the Year by Jim Bugg, Jr., president and chief executive of the company, which is North America’s largest interior design and home furnishings franchise company. “This award recognizes Patrice’s outstanding mentoring, which has led to significant growth in her region,” said Bugg as he presented the award recently at the company’s 47th annual conference and supplier market held in San Antonio, Texas. Hawkins’ region consists of franchises in the Charlotte Metro Area. Hawkins opened her own franchise, in 2004, after retiring from Bank of America. Her daughter, Elizabeth joined working summers and holidays while in interior design college during which she also worked for another Decorating Den Interiors franchise in Raleigh. Elizabeth became a partner in the business after her graduation in 2010. She serves clients both in the Charlotte Metro area as well as the Raleigh triangle area. Hawkins’ son, Edward, joined the business as a partner in 2007 and handles the back office as well as installations, and other customer service. The Hawkins Team franchise was recognized with an Eagle Award for sales that ranked in the top 15 percent in North America, and a Premier Club Award for achieving a new milestone in cumulative sales. 10

SOUTHERN IDEAL HOME SHOW Rethink. Refresh. Remodel. The Southern Ideal Home Show in Charlotte is a three day event where homeowners and lifestyle enthusiasts shop, compare, find solutions and save money for their home and garden needs. There are two stages to enjoy, packed with chefs and experts sharing tips on cooking, interior design, landscaping, and home improvement. This year’s special guests are Brett Raymer and Wayde King from TV’s TANKED. Brett and Wayde will appear on Saturday and Sunday of the show.

CHARLOTTESGOTALOT.COM'S 16 WAYS TO EXPERIENCE CHARLOTTE'S BEST BREWERIES The Charlotte area is home to more than two dozen craft breweries, and 15-plus more are in planning. These brew hubs are certainly known for their beloved signature suds, but they’re serving up much more for guests to enjoy. Here are 16 ways to get your fill at Charlotte breweries in 2016. 1. Host a hoppy hour. Crops of breweries can be found by the block in hip neighborhoods, like South End and NoDa, where young professionals and millennials abound. Be the office hero by suggesting happy hour at a brewery close to Center City. Try Wooden Robot Brewery or Sycamore Brewing.

Heist Brewery

2. Have a drink with your furry friend. Charlotte-area breweries are famous for their “come one, come all” philosophies, where they welcome both kids and dogs. Hang out on the sunny back patio and have a drink with your fury friend at Triple C Brewing Co., where the owner’s Labradoodle, Maggie, can be found greeting guests of the two-legged and four-legged variety. 3. Try something exclusive. Sure, ingredients like sweet potatoes, spicy peppers and coffee make for special pours, but Charlotte’s breweries are doing even more exceptional things with cold ones. Sugar Creek Brewing

Experience Zebra Restaurant.

Co. is Charlotte’s only brewery crafting the Biére de Garde style of beer, which is brewed using eight different specialty malts imported from France. 4. Taste a Great American Beer Festival winner. At the helm of Charlottearea breweries are brewmasters constantly striving to make works of art of their craft creations. And it hasn’t gone unnoticed; local beers are earning the recognition they deserve. Taste why NoDa Brewing Company’s beloved Hop Drop n’ Roll IPA is a gold medal winner. 5. Take a selfie with the Free Range Brewing tractor. Local brewers’ mission statements are translated through their taprooms’ distinctive decor and the materials and ingredients they source. Free Range Brewing’s farmhouse approach to sustainability is reflected in the incorporation of local fruits, vegetables and herbs in its beers and in the reclaimed décor of its taproom, including an old tractor out front, which begs to be used as a photo prop. 6. Refresh your palate with kombucha at Lenny Boy Brewing Co. As the creative brewing craze gains steam in Charlotte, so are its breweries’ sipping options. Lenny Boy Brewing Co., North Carolina's only certified organic microbrewery, also makes kombucha – a popular fermented tea said to have mythical healing properties – and has carved out an additional name for itself as the only certified organic kombucha maker in the Southeast. Try local favorites like the Good Ol’ Ginger and Lost Rose. 7. Pair a beer with a food truck bite. Charlotte’s breweries know that craft suds lead to savory cravings. Fortunately, breweries and food trucks go hand-in-hand here. Try a killer sandwich or Southern side at one of the food trucks parked out front of Sycamore Brewing on the weekends.

Start the day with a Charlotte favorite, brunch at Heist Brewery, and then take advantage of the proximity as you hop over to Free Range Brewing and beyond for a day that satisfies craft cravings. 9. Play a board game at Birdsong Brewing Co. Gorgeous, picnic table-laden patios, cozy fire pits and taprooms stocked with games of all types are just a few of the extras on tap at breweries in Charlotte. Grab your friends and a few flights and challenge them to a throwback round of giant-size Jenga at Birdsong. 10. Go behind the scenes at The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery. Visitors of the Queen City’s assorted brew houses can enjoy insider access to back-of-house operations that illuminate the fascinating craft beer creation process. With brew houses that dot the blocks of Charlotte’s various neighborhoods and craft havens that flow from the city's South Carolina suburbs to the banks of Lake Norman and beyond, beer lovers can tour the city one sip at a time. Go north for a cold one at Cabarrus Brewing Co. or south for one at Full Spectrum Brewing Co. 12. Perfect your Warrior poses over pints. A handful of breweries, like D9 Brewing Co. and Bayne Brewing Company, host regular public yoga classes right inside their taprooms or on their sprawling lawns. tinues to dominate more and more of Charlotte’s cultural scene, the city has become a proud host of year-round brewery tours. Take a Saturday Brewery Tour with Charlotte Brews Cruise or climb aboard the Trolley Pub Charlotte to sip and pedal your way through the city’s craft beer scene. 14. Taste Charlotte’s best at an annual fest. Charlotte hosts more than 20 beer festivals each year, including Charlotte Oktoberfest, the Moo and Brew Craft Beer and Burger Festival, Tuck Fest, and the North Carolina Brewers and Music Festival. 15. Take home more than a pint glass. Charlotte’s breweries aren’t just using their local brews to flavor one-off cocktails and tasty bites. Triple C Brewing Co.’s beers have been infused into foamy soaps created by local line Small Keys. Pick them up in scents like Smoked Amber at 7th Street Public Market. And prepare your jewelry box for Noda Brewing Company’s plans to use its beer cans to make cool, fashionable necklaces, bracelets and earrings. 16. Drink for a good cause. Charlotte’s breweries have strong philanthropic ties to the community. Join The Unknown Brewing Company’s inaugural 'Live Without Boundaries’ Cornhole Tournament' on April 30. The event is a fundraiser for the Arc of Mecklenburg County, an organization that helps empower individuals with developmental disabilities to live their lives without boundaries. OMB

lying south for the winter? Canada Geese have no trouble finding the warmer weather, and in recent years have made Charlotte their home. While South Charlotte is an area embracing our natural habitat, if not contained properly, our migratory friends can become a real problem for local businesses, schools and airports in the area. Enter Flyaway Geese. Rebecca Gibson, owner of Flyaway Geese, has offered Goose Control to the Charlotte and Raleigh area for over 17 years. Goose Control provides a humane alternative for corporate properties looking to safely relocate their Geese population. According to Gibson there are several reasons why it is important to discourage Geese from nesting on corporate, residential or commercial properties. Geese graze on lawns and destroy property while using the bathroom more than four times each day. Goose manure

Herding training

“Since it is not safe to introduce wolves, coyotes or alligators into commercial and residential areas, Border Collies are a natural solution,” stated Gibson. THE HERDERS

These birds have made these properties their homes because they feel safe and most of the time, there are no natural predators in the area. “Since it is not safe to introduce wolves, coyotes or alligators into commercial and residential areas, Border collies are a natural solution,” stated Gibson. Geese naturally fear coyotes and wolves. Unlike other breeds of dogs, border collies behave and move like natural predators. “When a bird sees a border collie with its head down and tail between its legs, it automatically associates that body movement with that of a predator,” says Gibson. While the dogs mean no harm, this behavior is very intimidating to geese and they 16

South Charlotte Lifestyle | July 2016

will eventually move on to a “predator” free environment within two weeks to a month. Geese that are herded regularly by border collies will seek a safer place to live. Flyaway Geese’s border collies do not harm the birds. They simply herd the Geese off the property and do not have any physical contact with geese. Overall, using a highly-trained border collie to drive off geese is a very efficient and natural way to solve a facility’s geese problem. Flyway Geese brings border collies onto properties to drive away geese while being monitored and led by experienced technicians. If you or anyone you know needs help with their nuisance bird problem, feel free to contact Flyaway Geese at 910.975.8773.

Myth Buster: Canada Geese are no longer migratory birds. Canada Geese is their species name. These are Charlotte resident birds. The water doesn’t freeze and there is grass year long for them to graze on so these Geese have no reason to migrate.

harlotte artist, Marcy Gregg, doesn’t remember much before going into a coma. 26 years ago, Gregg had just given birth to her third child. During delivery, she had a severe sinus infection leading to a rare but severe case of bacterial spinal meningitis that left her in what seemed like a deep and futile coma. Doctors had given up hope and prepared Gregg's family for the worst, but - miraculously - she woke up from the coma, only to realize she no longer had any recent memory of most of her family and friends.

“When I woke up, I thought I was 17 again. My life became a whirlwind,” says Gregg. The coma caused her to lose 80-85% of her memory. "I knew who my husband was, because I met him when I was young, and I knew who my children were, because a mother just knows her children...but I had no memory of having them or being with them." Over the next several years, Gregg began the process of rebuilding her life, including starting her own successful corporate training business. After 12 years, she decided to sell her business. Although Gregg enjoyed what she was doing, she couldn't shake the feeling that something was missing. 20

South Charlotte Lifestyle | July 2016

"Art has always played a big part in my life," she says. "I was raised in a family that respected and loved art. Both my grandmother and aunt were artists." Gregg believes this may have influenced her to become an art major while she attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas after high school, before the jarring memory loss a few years later. When she became a mom, however, she set art aside to raise her family. While these achievements were no doubt fulfilling on many levels, she couldn't help feeling there was more to her life and her story, as if she were meant for a different calling.

“There was a yearning inside of me that wasn’t being fulfilled in the corporate world. I just wanted to create,”says Gregg. So, one day, she picked up a paintbrush and has not stopped painting and creating since. “What started as a few hours each day, transformed into me becoming a fulltime artist,” explains Gregg. "God gave me a second chance at life and I didn’t want to waste it so I started painting.” All of Gregg’s paintings are abstract and begin with a Bible verse; from there she creates a title related to the verse and then she just paints. All of her paintings have a lot of layers and are very colorful. “I love the colors and textures of abstract work. With that, the creative side of me really goes wild,” says Gregg. Gregg paints six days a week at her studio in Dilworth Artisan Station and loves every minute of it. Her pieces are reflections of her miraculous story and the way she views life. “I love what I do. Everyday I come into the studio and have a wonderful day. I don’t take it for granted." Gregg’s work is on display in Charlotte at Anne Neilson’s Fine Art. hen you hear Discovery Place, you probably think of a bunch of kids running around but on the third Friday of each month, Discovery Place hosts “Science on The Rocks”, an evening packed with science learning for adults. Appropriately titled, this 21+ event mixes adult beverages with science. With games, music, activities, and lots of fun, this monthly event is the perfect place for spending time with friends or for a date night. Each night has a theme. Past themes include 90s night, Summer Camp and most recently, Game Night. Each event has activates related to the theme. At the Summer Camp themed event, there was Nerf archery, kayak races, liquid nitrogen marshmallow s’mores, and a station to make friendship bracelets (my personal favorite).

Your ticket purchase also grants you access to some of the exhibits the museum has to offer. Discovery Place has many themed exhibits including Project Build with focal points like architecture and building blocks and World Alive, an exhibit with aquariums filled with frogs and underwater creatures, some of which you can touch. Another very popular exhibit is what Discovery Place refers to as the “Cool Stuff” section. These are physics based activities that teach you, “why things do what they do to.” The exhibit has three main areas: lift, push and look/move. All three areas have hands-on activities such as the air chair, bed of nails and rope climb for you to participate in with friends or people you meet.

Fun activities for all

Discovery Place also has one of the largest IMAX theaters in the Carolinas. During science on the rocks, you can take a behind the scenes tour of the IMAX theatre and watch a movie for an additional $5. Currently, IMAX is showing, “National Parks Adventure.” This movie highlights America’s most legendary parks and outdoor attractions including Yellowstone, Glacier National Park, Yosemite, the Everglades and Arches. If you love science and cocktails, you should come to the next event and bring some friends. Science on the Rocks takes place the third Friday of each month from 5-9 p.m. Tickets are now on sale. Admission is $8 in advance or $10 at the door (tax included).

Road Trip

(CON TI N U ED)

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> wildlife at every turn. Visitors can snorkel with sea lions, mingle with giant tortoise and observe penguins, boobies and prehistoric-looking iguanas. This excitement, combined with the archipelago of lava formations, cactus forests, turquoise water and tropical beaches makes it an unforgettable vacation for young and old.

A trip to the remote Galapagos, made up of about 19 islands, is truly a bucket list destination. Small, expedition cruising is one of the more popular ways to experience the area and makes planning and preparing for the trip much easier. As an example, one supplier, Celebrity Cruises. offers travellers 5 star accomodations in Quito to begin a ten-day journey, privately chartered air transfers to the ship, expertly guided tours and two excursions each day to places like Kicker Rock, Darwin’s Research Center or Bartolome Island. In fact, Celebrity Cruises includes all the gear you will need to enjoy the area, such as snorkeling equipment, wetsuits, binoculars, etc. No additional charges apply so new costs never surprise you on vacation! Mann Travels is a preferred supplier of Galapagos itineraries for every budget. The region is truly a unique experience that will offer many once-in-a-lifetime experiences. What can I do in the Galapagos? Sight extremely rare Flightless Cormorant. Snorkel with Sea Lions. Experience the courtship dance of the Blue Footed Boobies. Walk among the big iguanas. Mingle with both giant tortoises and penguins.

GRILL MASTER CHEF ERNIE ADLER'S TIPS FOR CHOOSING THE PERFECT GRILL

Fire Magic Complete Gri

ARTICLE ERNIE ADLER

S

TOP! Don’t run to that big box store for a grill (yet). To master the fire you first need to have good equipment. Be as selective in buying a grill as you are buying all of your kitchen appliances. Your guests, taste buds, and wallet will thank you for it. Best of all you can do it with 5 simple things to consider:

#1: Cooking fuel (gas is the most convenient, charcoal, or wood). #2: Number of people you cook for = grill size. #3: Accessories: Buy no less than 3 burners and go high on the BTU output, consider accessories like a must have side burner, rotisserie, infrared, searing zone, and a smoker box. #4: Stand alone, on a cart, or built into an island kitchen. #5: Budget. Expect to pay just below $1,000 to over $20,000 for a durable grill that will perform well and hold up for more than a few years to a lot of use and the elements.

Entertain large

groups outside.

Now it’s time to shop. For built-in islands get the dimensions from your contractor and for stand-alone measure your overall cooking space. Read up on the internet first-there are a lot of sites to get information on manufacturers. Next head out to a specialty outdoor store that carries gas grills such as Weber, Napoleon, Lynx, Bull, DCS, and Fire Magic. For ceramic Kamado cookers Green Egg and Primo, and charcoal/smokers Weber, Horizon, and Grillworks Argentinian style. There are a lot of manufacturers and designs so take your time. “Grill the salesperson” about the BTUs, ignition system, materials (such as cast iron, steel, porcelain coated metal), parts, warranty and repairs, and add-ons. Before you know it you’ll be grilling like a professional. Find the right grill for you at TheHearthAndPatio.com.
