here's no place like home. Home is where the heart is. A house is not a home.

OCTOBER 2017 PUBLISHER

Richard Mellert | Richard.Mellert@LifestylePubs.com

There's a reason idioms abound when it comes to the place we call home. It's not just where we lay our heads at night, it's where we lay our hearts. It's the place we go when we seek comfort or relaxation, where we cook our meals and bring our friends, where we raise our children and make our lives.

George Zorrilla | George.Zorrilla@LifestylePubs.com

That's why the matters of the home are so important. It's not about keeping up with the Joneses; it's about keeping up with yourself. Your home should be a true reflection of you.

Valery Huffenus of Design Den Interiors,

We've gathered inspiration to help make your dream home a reality in this issue. From small design elements like wallpaper to drool-worthy condos, you'll find all the inspiration you need to turn your house into a home.

CHARLOTTE’S

LARGEST

FLOORING SHOWROOM

Prior to arriving at Hughes Floor Covering, we visited four different flooring stores. No one was able to adequately assist us. The sales associate at Hughes was more than accommodating. He was not only knowledgeable about our options, he gave suggestions, had personal experience in installing the flooring system and provided us with samples to take home. On our installation day, our order was on time and the installers were friendly and very competent. They ensured we were completely satisfied, respected our property and left the work area clean. They did what they said they would do in every phase of the process.” – Recent Customer

OPERA CAROLINA’S 69TH SEASON Opera Carolina returns with a season of deceit, disguise and drama. The Grand Opera productions begin in November with Cyrano, David DiChiera’s reimagining of the tragicomic French masterpiece. Second in the series is a co-production with Opera Grand Rapids and Toledo Opera of Verdi’s tragic opera Rigoletto in February. Concluding the Grand Opera season is The Marriage of Figaro, Mozart’s

of a tumultuous trip to the altar, in April. Opera Carolina

has

been

“Thinking Outside The

Belk” and continues to expand into the community with the popular “Opera Unlimited” series with performances in area churches, breweries and throughout the community. Opera Carolina also reprises its fifth annual Art • Poetry • Music celebration with opera, visual art and the spoken word for three different cultures, beginning with the Asian-American community this month at the Halton Theater.

KIT REUTHER: CASUAL GEOMETRY Nashville-based and self-taught painter and sculptor Kit Reuther recently unveiled a new series at South End's Hodges Taylor in collaboration with David Lusk Gallery. Over the course of his career, Reuther's work has evolved from realism to complete abstractionism. Her playful take on the confines of geometry stems from her intuition, rather than any particular rubric or subject matter. As Reuther states, “I try to avoid making art with an intended outcome or message for the viewer. My only real intention is to make work that pushes and challenges me and feels slightly odd and fresh to my eyes.” 12

The result is casual elegance that's both approachable and indefinable. The exhibition will be on view through October 27, 2017.

IN FOCUS: CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPHY IN MEXICO The unprecedented In Focus/Enfoque will bring together six cultural institutions across Charlotte: The Mint Museum, The Light Factory, McColl Center for Art + Innovation, Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, LaCa (Latin American Contemporary Art) Projects and SOCO Gallery. The exhibition of contemporary Mexican photography, which began in late summer, will continue through spring 2018. Inspired by the highly successful Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, this unique collaboration features more than 50 artists from Mexico and the United States exploring diverse topics and themes, including design, gender, activism, identity, globalism, and borders. In Focus/ Enfoque will showcase a wide variety of contemporary art in dialogue with the Queen City. For more information, visit CharlotteCultureGuide.com/InFocus.

THE RELATIVES ANNUAL BREAKFAST On October 17th, The Relatives will be holding its annual Breakfast with The Relatives event to share their inspiring story with leaders in the Charlotte community. The Relatives began in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1974 as a safe haven for youth who were either homeless or had run away from home and had thus been exposed to exploitation and the dangers of street life. They serve the most vulnerable youth and young adults in Charlotte—young people who are not just homeless or in crisis, but many who have aged out of public systems such as foster care, juvenile justice, and children’s mental health systems. The Relatives aims to empower these young adults to become self-advocates and find viable, long-term paths to success through a coordinated continuum of services that serves nearly 6,000 youth, young adults, and families every year. Bringing the Indoors Out A PERFECT PATIO FROM SALINS GROUP

F

or decades designers have heralded the merits of “bringing the outdoors in.” Splashy wallpapers decked in tropical

leaves, botanical prints, verdant green fabrics and paints and accents—trends pulled from the outdoors have been tacked on inspiration boards for years. But as of late, there’s been an awakening, a much more sensical approach to enjoying the outdoors: rather than bring the outdoors in, why not bring the indoors out?

Luxury living spaces have found sure footing in the 21st centu-

ry’s patios, porches and decks. Fireplaces, fancy fixtures and even full-sized kitchens are no longer solely the territory of rooms that include four walls and a roof. And in Charlotte, where we can spend just about 365 days a year enjoying the South’s seasons, our outdoor living spaces are quickly becoming our favorite rooms. As with all things home, not all patios and porches are created equal. We asked local luxury reno experts Salins Group to share their favorite outdoor living space and all the perks that make it perfect. At 1400 square feet and two stories and designed with architect Craig Cox at Cox Architecture & Design, PLLC, these pretty porches bring luxury outdoors—where it belongs. LOWER LEVEL

• A timeless masonry fire pit offers a fiery finale for every outdoor gathering. • Bluestone slab stepping stones are pretty and practical. • The covered lower-level porch includes a complete kitchen and grilling area that upgrades every BBQ. • In-ceiling radiant heat makes the porches pleasant on the chilliest nights. • Masonry and stucco interior and exterior walls provide a classic aesthetic. • The large table can seat a cool dozen for dinner parties of all sizes. UPPER LEVEL

• A wide, full masonry wood-burning fireplace with built-in firewood storage, raised hearth and precast surround is both cozy and posh. • A sleek, modern cable railing system at the perimeter keeps kids safe. • The entertaining space expands upstairs with lots of comfy seating.

WELCOME HOME (CON TI N U ED)

TRADITIONAL IN SOUTH CHARLOTTE The older neighborhoods of Charlotte are rife with historic homes and genteel living, and the Greenwood Estate is the apex of such properties.Steeped with Southern architectural

history,

the

home

was

crafted with reclaimed millwork from the Charleston area and built to stand the test of time (and trends). The gated property offers 20 acres of low country elegance right here in South Charlotte with unrivaled enhancements, including a quaint guest cabin and English garden-style pool with cabana house. It’s centrally located ( just minutes from the Arboretum), but in the midst of all that acreage, the home feels as private as a true estate.

MODERN IN WAXHAW We love historic charm, but there’s a lot to be said for “new,” too. For the homeowner who wants to stay rooted firmly in the 21st century, Charlotte’s southern neighbors boast lots of fresh properties. Built in 2014 inside the gated Longview Country Club, this home offers sleek, state-of-the-art luxury in a shiny, new package. That means classic design elements like Carrera marble countertops and hardwoods paired with modern amenities like a Mr. Steam shower, Miracle massage tub, Sonos audio, and Jenn-Air Pro appliances.

ORNATE IN MYERS PARK Historically, luxury was reserved for the elite, like grand castles decked in artful fineries and bursting with timeless antiques. But this kind of design isn’t just a thing of the past—take this home in Myers Park as an example. From delicately carved doorknobs to dozens of stained glass panes, this house is an actual piece of art. Two large travertine terraces and multiple entertaining spaces make this unique home an entertainer’s—or Anglophile’s—dream.

PENTHOUSE AT 230 S. TRYON Even our classic Southern hometown harbors big-city luxury. Uptown’s bustling streets are known for their banking businesses, but here you’ll also find extravagant condos and one very special two-story penthouse. This personalized property is sparklingly modern, but with curated textures and features, it certainly isn’t sparse. Four fireplaces, four balconies, and smart home technology make this an unprecedented property.

Souvenir Showdown BRING YOUR VACATION HOME

P

ARTICLE RONI FISHKIN

hotos and journals are wonderful ways to keep a recent vacation alive in our minds, but nothing is better than bringing a piece of

your globetrotting adventures home with you so that you can relive the wonder everyday. Home is where the heart is, and it should also pay homage to the other places where you left a piece of your heart. In many cases it doesn't mean leaving your whole wallet behind, either! Here are 10 tips to incorporate your next journey into your home (no regrets included). 1. Do a little homework before you go. Know what the region is famous for and what the general value is so you aren't overwhelmed with research on the spot. 2. Don’t be swayed by quantity. Just because every shop sells Bohemian crystal in Prague or Murano glass in Italy, if it’s not your style, don't buy it. Tourists are often caught up in the moment. Be discriminating. 3. Don’t get caught in tourist traps. Often the best deals are found in out-of-the-way locations. Rely on local recommendations to find those bargains, and don't be afraid to haggle in regions where it is an acceptable practice (again, that research is key!). 4. Buy local. If an item says it is made in Singapore, but that’s not where you are, don’t bother with it. 5. Don’t pass up the local markets. There are usually great gifts for kids and friends in those shadowy aisles, plus they make for awesome people-watching and delicacy-tasting with local flare. 6. Consider shipping your new possessions home instead of trav-

eling with them. Obviously this depends on your budget and the size of your luggage, but lugging around your first-day purchase for the rest of your vacation gets old fast. 7. Unless you’re buying gifts for your entire book club, consider purchasing one good piece instead of a handful of less-expensive ones.
