Lifestyle Letter

November is more than just Thanksgiving.

NOVEMBER 2015

Y

es. It’s November. And it’s Thanksgiving. People say time flies when you’re having fun. I say time always flies, fun or not. So, it’s that much more important to constantly give thanks, be it November or March, rainy or sunny, good times or bad. I think there’s something therapeutic about saying “thank you,” especially when people aren’t expecting it. I can tell you that I’m most thankful for my God, my family and my life. I use the word "life" here because that pretty much encompasses everything else. I’m thankful for it all. For what are you thankful? Do the people for whom you’re thankful know that you’re thankful? Here’s a challenge: every day in November, make it a point to tell someone that you appreciate him or her. Find a time to be gracious. TIP: Do it when you don’t feel like it, or when the other person really doesn’t deserve it. Ohhh…that heaping coals on their head thing! If we do it all month, maybe it will carry over to forever! Let’s get to the things in this issue for which YOU should be thankful! Like how to scope out an awesome house in South Fulton, on any budget. Or, maybe you need a little help in the bedroom—we’ve got that covered, too! How about some insight on gratitude, from one of our timeless pastors, Mark Couch? It’s all in here, plus much more. Shall we? Oh yeah, HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

FORCE OF 1 HELPS THOSE IN NEED The Force of 1 is a collective of men whose purpose is to strengthen each other to be strong leaders. Through the African Diaspora, the black community here in the U.S. has suffered greatly. Through the process of creating slaves, wedges were lodged in the heart of the black family and we have yet to recover. The result is a deficit in the family where we find that men aren’t taking their rightful place of responsibility and leadership. Through reinforcement, our vision is that we revitalize, restore, and renew men into leaders thus renewing our communities, country, and the world. 10

f I told you a bedroom makeover would instantly transform your love life, what would you say? “Oh, I know she didn’t go there.” Yes. I did. Imagine coming home after an exhausting day to a master bedroom suite that is inviting, relaxing, and dare I say, romantic. In reality, more than we are willing to admit, our bedrooms are anything but sexy. They serve multiple functions that tend to overshadow the main function—a romantic environment for sleeping and intimacy. Current research has shown: • Watching TV in bed is bad for intimacy. Couples experience less conversation with one another and miss out on meaningful quality time. • Sharing a bed with the kids won’t allow you to transition from being parents to being intimate partners. • Working on your laptop in bed, or in the bedroom lowers melatonin levels resulting in difficulties getting settled and insomnia.

14

South Fulton Lifestyle | November 2015

In fact, the cell phone needs to go, too. Another survey found that 75 percent of Americans say they’re within five feet of their smartphone most of the time and one in 10 check their phones during intimacy. Yikes! Well, I’m proud to say we took this bedroom from technology central (Thank goodness you can’t see the makeshift computer lap desk in this picture!) to Temptation Island. Honestly, it’s none of my business what goes down in this couple’s boudoir. My only concern is that whatever they do, they do it in sophistication and style. Want to make the magic happen? A Prescription for Laughter SOUTH FULTON COMEDIAN (AND PHARMACIST) LAVAR WALKER MAKES IT TO THE SEMIFINALS OF LAST COMIC STANDING ARTICLE LAVAR WALKER AND ERIKKA MITCHELL PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

SFL: What’s the best thing about living in the South Fulton area? LW: You can get a big house for a nice price in South Fulton. There are lots of wonderful people in South Fulton too. SFL: What was the best part of representing ATL on Last Comic Standing? How do you think the experience will impact your comedy career? LW: Last Comic Standing was a great experience. It was my first time doing network television. It was great being judged by icons like Keenan Ivory Wayans, Roseanne Bar, and Norm McDonald. The show has definitely increased my visibility and has opened me up to doing various mainstream clubs across the nation. SFL: I heard that you are a brand new dad. Tell our readers a little something about your family. LW: I've been married for six years. I met my wife in college. She's was with me starting out as a comedian. She’s seen me get booed, she has seen me bomb and all the ups and downs I've had since starting in this business. We just had our first child in April. It's a great adjustment, and he brings lots of joy to our lives. Before him it was just us and our little dog. SFL: You’re a really funny comedian but in the show, you talked about being a licensed pharmacist. Share a little something about wearing your pharmacist hat and comedian hat at the same time. LW: The pharmacist supports the comedian until the comedian can take over. Comedy is very up and down, especially when you don't have a big name. Being a pharmacist gives me some breathing room between shows. Practicing pharmacy allows me to really be able to do comedy from my heart and not out of desperation. Besides, if I wasn't a pharmacist, I would probably be delivering pizzas or driving Uber between gigs. Pharmacy beats out both of those. However, I see comedy taking over real soon. But I'm thankful that I always have my education to fall back on. Everybody in Atlanta can see me at Laughing Skull on Oct 30 and Nov 1. 16

Holiday Meals Made Easy with Get Dinner to Go ARTICLE LEILA RUBY PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

There’s crispness in the air that is undeniably fall and I feel an excitement for things to come. The anticipation of seeing family and friends from far and near, football games to enjoy, parades to watch and delicious foods to eat is overwhelming. I love the thought of Thanksgiving. My family has a rich history of getting together for a large meal with a large crowd to go with it. Whether your family is big or small, daunting tasks await you. Arranging travel, packing bags, giving room assignments and more importantly assuring that the food will be great is always at the forefront of my mind. As I contemplate all of these items, I’m thankful. I’m thankful for the good problem of having so many loving relatives and having the resource of “Get Dinner to Go.” The multitalented Mitchell and Jensen families have merged to form one powerhouse of food and service. People have crossed several state lines in order to enjoy the sit down restaurant quality with fast food restaurant speed and over the top customer service. I order online, pull up to the parking lot and they bring it to my car… who can ask for more? And their specialty? Holiday meals! It’s a true blessing to have them here in South Fulton. I hope you’ll choose to give them a try this year. You won’t regret it. It has certainly given me more time to get my house clean for my in-laws. To place an order or check out the options, please visit GetDinnerToGo.com. Leila Ruby is a freelance writer and can be followed at LeilaRubySpeaks.Tumblr.com. 22

Your Livelihood VS. Your Calling FINDING YOUR PASSION

ARTICLE JULIET HALL | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

W

hat happens when the company you love does not love you back? Or, when you give 100 percent in the day-to-day race for your career and still leave the office feeling stuck, empty, overlooked and underutilized? It is very rare to hear people say they absolutely love their work and are fulfilled in what they do. Yet, the majority will choose to survive in a job instead of thrive in their calling. There is a difference between your livelihood and your calling. Your livelihood is simply the job or career that creates a steady revenue stream for your household. We all need a livelihood to eat and pay the bills, and many people achieve a degree of measurable success in their careers. But, success does not always equal fulfillment. Many people base their self-worth on their job status. But, do you ever feel like your life is bigger than the work you get paid to do? Therein lies your calling. Your calling is work that inspires and drives you, and work that exercises the unique abilities, gifts, talents and any other innate qualities that naturally shape the person you are. When you live out your calling, you feel strong, confident and alive. You become noticed and recognized more, your value increases, and you are fed with endless opportunities because it is your gifts that make room for you. Identifying and living out your calling give your life real meaning and significance, leaving an indelible imprint in the life of others. The ideal is to make a livelihood out of your calling. So, how do you know what you are called to do? Start by writing down tendencies that are natural and energizing to you. What do your friends, colleagues or spiritual advisors repeatedly say you do well? What jobs are you doing when people praise and affirm you the most? Where do your thoughts naturally drift when you daydream? For what opportunities do people look to you to lead or execute at home, work, church and in the community? Look for common themes, and pretty soon your calling will come into focus. It is so liberating and fulfilling to be the person you uniquely are and get rewarded for it! If you are not maximizing your talents in your career and lack inspiration in what you do, then consider a different job because your opportunities and personal fulfillment will be limited. Juliet Hall is Senior Manager of Community Affairs, Chick-fil-A, Inc. and Director of External Affairs, Chick-fil-A Foundation.

Dear Don’t Look at Me, I am not a weight loss expert, so first you should see your primary care physician to be sure that no medical problems exist (i.e. Thyroid). If you’ve been cleared medically, then most likely your issue is emotional. Emotions love carbs. Sadness loves sweets, boredom loves chips, feeling empty or lonely loves bread, etc. These aren’t literal comparisons but you get my point right? Emotional management will help significantly with weight management. Reduce stress. Stress triggers the hormone cortisol, and cortisol makes it nearly impossible to lose weight. Lastly, eat mindfully. When you eat, ask yourself, “why am I eating this?” and keep a daily journal of what you eat, when you’re eating, and how you feel at the moment. You can do it! Just take one moment at a time.

trim was a tasteful accent to the wheat-colored leather interior of the dark blue test vehicle. The fit and finish are all that one expects in a full-size luxury SUV. Standard equipment includes a navigation system, a Bose stereo with 13 speakers and an Around View monitor that gives a birds-eye view of the vehicle. Moving object detection alerts the driver to approaching vehicles in parking lots. Around View was especially helpful in tight confines. The front seats could benefit from bottom cushions with deeper contours. The split-folding second seat had plenty of legroom, and the power-folding third seat was big enough to be usable, though there is not much cargo space with the third seat in place. The test vehicle was equipped with the theater package that had 7-inch monitors in the back of each front headrest. Games or videos can be watched separately on either screen. The seats are as plush as fine furniture, and the cabin feels luxurious.

he Infiniti QX80 is a vehicle of contradictions and it always leaves me with mixed feelings. I’ve never been a fan of the exterior styling, yet the interior beckons with soft leather and wood trim. The V-8 engine guzzles fuel but it is extremely smooth and strong enough to tow 8,500 pounds. In summary, this full-size SUV shines from the inside out and delivers luxury on par with anything in its segment. Styling is certainly subjective. Infiniti updated the QX80 with a new grille that reflects the design language of the Q50 sedan. It’s an improvement, for sure, but the big nose is still a imposing. The QX80 used to be called the QX56. The new name is part of Infiniti’s revamped nomenclature. The SUV comes in rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, with a direct-injection, 5.6-liter engine mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. The 400-horsepower V-8 can tow up to 8,500 pounds. Fuel economy is rated at 14 miles per gallon in the city and 20 on the highway. 26

PRICE

Base prices start at $63,250 for rear-wheel drive and $66,350 for all-wheel drive. The rear-wheel-drive test vehicle from Infiniti’s press fleet had a sticker price of $77,185. On the road, the QX80 felt as if it were gliding over the pavement, even with the optional 22-inch wheels, yet the vehicle didn’t seem overly soft or mushy in turns. That’s a benefit of the optional hydraulic body motion control system that links shock absorbers from one side to those on the other, keeping body lean in check without forcing a stiff ride. The smooth ride was enhanced by a lack of wind and road noise. The optional Driver’s Assistance Package includes blind-spot warning, backup collision avoidance intervention, forward emergency braking and forward predictive collision warning. The backup intervention applies the brakes if something is behind the vehicle, and forward emergency braking does the same when it senses an imminent collision. The best part of the QX is the lush interior that has seating for eight with a second-row bench seat. Stratford Burl wood

The base price of the test car was $63,250. Options included the theater package, blind-spot monitor, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, upgraded Bose stereo with surround sound and 15 speakers, heated and cooled front seats and 22-inch wheels. The sticker price was $77,185. WARRANTY

Four years or 60,000 miles with a sixyear, 70,000-mile powertrain warranty. Editor’s Note: Please go see our friends at Infiniti of South Atlanta for a test drive of the QX80.

THE

POWER OF THANKSGIVING WORDS PASTOR MARK A. COUCH

O

ne of the most popular narratives in the Bible is the feeding of the 5,000 found in the Gospels. The pertinent portion of this story often overlooked is what Christ does before the miracle. The disciples told Jesus it would take a year's wages to feed this many men, not including the women and children. Jesus responded with a question, "What do you have?" They presented him with a little boy's lunch consisting of two fish and five barley loaves of bread. Jesus takes the two fish and the five barley loaves and gives thanks. After he blesses it and gives thanks, the little bit becomes more than enough to feed nearly 15,000 people. My point is, if you can learn to give thanks for the little bit, God will make sure you have more than enough. 34
