MASSAGE ENVY

It reads Massage Envy, but it should read “Facial Envy.” Only because I got a darn good facial there. As always, I was welcomed warmly BY NAME, which is awesome. Like Cheers! (You’ve got to be in th 32+ crowd to get that one). And, a little cucumber water never hurts after a hot day outside. Anyhoot, my aesthetician was friendly, knowledgeable and thorough. After an initial assessment of my skin, she made recommendations for do’s and don’ts, based exactly on my skin type. She explained everything each step of the way, being sure to inform of why it was necessary for me to re-enact all of the things she was doing at home. And she recommended great product, but didn’t force it on me. An all-around good visit. If you want a solid entry-line facial, no need to travel far. Just head over to “Facial” (Massage) Envy. Congrats! You’re a Pick! Find them at massageenvy.com

SLIDEWAYS

By now you guys know how much I love food. Now, I love Slideways food. First, how can you not go bonkers over the name? So creative! Second, the twist they’ve done on the sliders thing…OMG. I had the Yolo, the Texan and the Chicken and Waffle. The Yolo has a batter-dipped onion ring on it. Nuff said there. The Texan? Well, everything’s big (and good) in Texas. The C&W? No way anything with fried chicken and waffles in it can be bad. Should I have eaten it all? No. Did I try? Yes. I attempted to make myself feel better by getting the grilled veggies, which were delish (but really healthy). If I were you, I’d go head first for the sweet potato fries. Or some more onion rings. Or fried brussel sprouts. Somebody, make it stop! Congrats, Slideways! You’re a Pick! Find them at eat-slideways.com.

uring this time of year, we often think about being thankful and giving to others. June Peters, You Will Change the World One Day, by Alika Turner, makes you want to put those warm feelings into action. June Peters is a charismatic, determined and altruistic young girl who is has a desire to learn and experience more of the world around her. She begins to change her world by asking her parents if she could walk to school alone. This request would cause some parents to jump for joy, while causing other parents to cringe with fear. June doesn't take long to act on her blossoming independent and generous nature, by giving her lunch money to a stranger in need. June, like many innocent and naive children, does not understand why her act of kindness is both well received by others, but worrisome to her parents. She doesn't allow her parents' concerns however to sway her from continuing to give to others. June uses her discussions with her parents to grow her one simple act of kindness into a day of service that ultimately impacts many individuals who are in need. This book is a remarkable tale that encourages children and adults alike to see, to feel, and to take action in order to help those in need. June Peters, You Will Change the World One Day appears to be a brief glimpse into the author's early beginnings as an agent of change. Author Alika Turner is the founder of the non-profit organization, Project Giving is Golden. PGIG lists of charity include, but are not limited to; providing business attire for victims of domestic abuse, providing arts and crafts activities for kids in shelters, and feeding the homeless throughout the metro Atlanta area.

Healthy Lifestyle

12 Days of

Sanity HOW TO SURVIVE HOLIDAY STRESS

ARTICLE DR. R. JOHNSON-VERWAYNE

I

t’s the most wonderful time of the year. Christmas carols, holiday cards, endless dessert, unlimited parties, and don’t forget those unwanted visitors… stress, anxiety, and depression. For many of us, the holidays bring about the very opposite of what society suggests. By December 31st, at the stroke of midnight, we are drained and we swear to ourselves that next year will be different, but the cycle of stress, anxiety, and depression continues. Here are 12 ways to remain sane starting TODAY. 1. Acknowledge your feelings-prepare yourself for what is to come. Preparation is key. 2. Say NO! It’s that simple. 3. Relax. Don’t overdo it. 4. Don’t feel forced by tradition. If a tradition is overwhelming and stressful, modify it or do away with it. 5. Walk away from worries. A brisk 30-minute walk will reduce your stress and also burn off those extra calories. 6. Do less and enjoy more. Another simple one. The saying “less is more” is perfect for this time of the year.

16

South Fulton Lifestyle | December 2015

7. Don’t abandon your daily routine. A sense of normalcy and predictability is important during the holidays. 8. Laugh. Laugh a lot. Laugh until your belly aches and tears fall down your face. Doctor’s orders. 9. Forget perfection. Do what you love to do well and let someone else do everything else. 10. Abandon old emotions. The fight you had last Christmas with your cousin, let it go. The weight of old conflict isn’t worth it. 11. Listen to your favorite tunes. Music combined with aromatherapy works wonders. Play your favorite music loudly and frequently. 12. Under commit. Under commit then spontaneously do what you have extra time to do. It feels way better than overcommitting. So there you have it! Nothing fancy, just 12 simple things to do to enhance your holidays. If you find yourself seriously depressed or overwhelmed, please speak to a therapist. This time of year is tough for so many but it doesn’t have to be. Try something different and try to reflect on what the holidays are truly about.

he’s a familiar face that visits your home via FOX 5 television on weekend evenings. You often catch her with a serious, professional demeanor anchoring the weekend prime time newscast but today she’s cool, light-spirited and full of smiles. For the past decade Deidra Dukes has anchored the news at WAGA-TV. From breaking news to national triumphs and tragedies, she has witnessed it all first hand. Working in the demanding 24/7 television news industry can be extremely stressful and haunting. But today, Dukes strolls into Camp Creek’s Ruby Tuesday Restaurant with a glow and a sass that projects confidence and calmness. When asked about her calm, collected demeanor, Dukes, quickly responded, “I’ve learned not to sweat the small stuff. Things that were important to me when I was younger, are just not a big deal anymore. You re-evaluate as you get older. Experience gives you a better perspective on life.” Dukes, a television veteran of more than 20 years, was a reporter for WSBTV and a reporter at WPXI-TV in Pittsburg, Pa., before landing at WAGA. The Oceanside, CA, girl got her first break as a reporter in Fresno and Redding. She has covered political scandal, high profile criminal cases, and the infamous Atlanta courthouse shooting. Her most memorable experience is covering the 2008 DNC when, then, Senator Barack Obama was running for president. “I sat down with former President Carter and his wife Mrs.

Carter and Ambassador Andrew Young and so many others, it was incredible. As a journalist you live for those moments.” But the stories that affect young people in her community are the ones that really impact her. “People are always telling me about their problems with gangs, drugs in the community and as a journalist and a member of society I am always searching for answers.” Dukes, a South Fulton resident, says this area keeps her attracted because of its growth. She attends Zion Hill Baptist church on Campbellton Road where she’s involved in the women’s ministry. She credits her success to her unwavering faith in God. But she admits, juggling her career, motherhood, social life and volunteer commitments can be challenging. She recalls the excruciating stress she endured when applying for middle schools for her son. “Applying to middle school was like applying to college,” laughs the single mom. “All these entrance exams, from private schools to charter schools, it was hard trying to find the right fit. So I know that getting him into college will be a breeze after this experience.” After all the stress and pressure, she and 12-yearold Mike were thrilled to be selected to attend Woodward Academy. Dukes successfully co-parents her son with her ex-husband. “We just made a decision to put him first. We have an unspoken rule, no matter what is going on with us, we focus on him and that’s why I think he’s so happy and well balanced.” Dukes beams with joy and pride when discussing her son and adds that she couldn’t do it without the support of her mother, Marion Dukes. “She’s a godsend,” she says. While Dukes and her mother have a tight bond, she easily recalls how her mother ran a ‘tight ship’ when she and her young brother were growing up. “My mom was strict. She demanded a lot and set high expectations for school,” says the Chicago State alum. “My parents didn’t attend college so that’s why it was so important for me to excel.” Dukes' father died in 2013 from ongoing health issues. He suffered from diabetes and was frequently in and out of the hospital. “It was very difficult. He was sick for so long, you just keep thinking the person is going to pull out it,” she reflects. The death of her father gives Dukes inspiration to eat healthier and exercise. “I try to do something. Whether it’s walking, or getting on the treadmill, I have to make the time,” she says while munching on her salmon Caesar salad. “Diabetes and heart disease run in my family. I saw the effect it had on my dad. His health deteriorated because he didn’t take care of himself. So I get tested for diabetes once a year. Often times people take care of their kids and their spouses and focus on getting their jobs done that they neglect themselves. We have to take care of ourselves.” As we find ourselves right in the middle of the holiday season, where Dukes is busy hosting family and friends for dinner (complete with all the trimmings), she is vowing to focus more on her health and wellness in 2016. “I want to be a better person, and I want to be better about taking care of myself.” She encourages others not to be afraid to take risks in 2016. “When you stumble and fall, get back up. Learn from your mistakes and always give it your best.”

Dr. Raushannah Ask “Dr. RJ” Johnson-Verwayne Dear Dr. RJ, I have been trying to lose weight for a long time now and nothing seems to work. These extra pounds frustrate me and although no one knows it, I hate looking at myself. -Don’t Look at Me

Dear Don’t Look at Me, I am not a weight loss expert, so first you should see your primary care physician to be sure that no medical problems exist (i.e. Thyroid). If you’ve been cleared medically, then most likely your issue is emotional. Emotions love carbs. Sadness loves sweets, boredom loves chips, feeling empty or lonely loves bread, etc. These aren’t literal comparisons but you get my point right? Emotional management will help significantly with weight management. Reduce stress. Stress triggers the hormone cortisol, and cortisol makes it nearly impossible to lose weight. Lastly, eat mindfully. When you eat, ask yourself, “why am I eating this?” and keep a daily journal of what you eat, when you’re eating, and how you feel at the moment. You can do it! Just take one moment at a time.

For more information, visit AskDrRJ.com or Call Dr. RJ at 678-806-6170 for individualized attention. December 2015 | South Fulton Lifestyle

Creating Your Own

Family WORDS ANNE POTTER RUSS

W

ith a family the size of a small compact car, I often use the term "family" to describe my friends. My lineage is a long thin vine, rather than a large leafy tree, due to circumstances and odds that would win the lottery, if played. My mom was an only child. My dad was an only. Both of my paternal grandparents were only children. My husband is an only child. And, of course, I round out the roulette wheel as an only. Norbert and I had two kids so fast, it made the four grandparents’ heads spin. As soon as our children could talk and watch Mr. Rogers, they wanted to know where all the cousins were. “Is this a cousin?” they’d ask as the babysitter walked in the door. I had learned from my own childhood that “aunts” and “uncles” could be created; so, as an adult, I figured I must be able to conjure up some cousins for my kids. It wasn’t as easy as I’d thought. As I contemplated my friends in terms of being family members, it occurred to me that they had plenty of relatives, and might not be so thrilled to have to take on mine as a hobby. But finally, after reaching my half-century mark, I have come to realize that many folks in many places have reasons to create extended families. We are only a drastic case due to our very small numbers – there are just four of us in total, that is until we get to the branch of third cousins twice removed, whatever that means. We could bulk 42

up the numbers with the multiple-removed people, but we don't really know them well. Who we do know and want to spend time with are the friends now designated as family. Every Christmas night when I was growing up, we had an open house for anyone who needed someplace to go on a dark holiday night. My parents were inviting their “family” into our home for a holiday. (At the time, I thought it was just a ploy to delay my union with my newly opened gifts!) It was always a wonderful experience where people literally came in out of the cold to celebrate the season and the fellowship. Thanks to some wonderful friends, of multiple generations, we have recently spent some very rewarding time with our "family." Our inclusion in a rehearsal dinner, wedding, and surrounding festivities; our invitation from a dear friend to celebrate her mother’s birthday; and our crazy holidays spent with anyone who will have us, all add up to family. Lest you think I’m getting carried away anticipating the holidays this year, it does translate to our daily lives. As you read this magazine, think about the families who are being helped, often by people they’ve never met in soup kitchens and food pantries. Think about the families to whom you’ve become attached through work, play or philanthropy. It’s powerful stuff.
