evin Grayson and Jeremiah Turner team up to bring beautiful music as Unknown Lyric, a duo that plays what they describe as “Classical Fusion” on the violin and acoustic guitar. Unknown Lyric has produced 4 albums (all available on iTunes) along with a Christmas album and they performed at the St. Lucia Jazz Festival. They won on several occasions at Amateur Night at the Apollo and were named the winner of Rene Miller’s “Next Best” in 2011. SFL caught up with the musicians to find out some of their favorite artists and what’s on their playlists. Growing up a native of California, Jeremiah moved to Atlanta in 1996. Originally a visual artist, he attended Oakwood College in 2005 and Georgia Perimeter College shortly after. He started playing acoustic guitar in 2008 and three months later ran into Kevin, the violinist. “Inspired by the musical connection, I began to study hard, playing any chance I could to better my craft,” he says. His favorite musical selections to play include “Rhythm and Strings” and “Melody at Midnight.” Jeremiah’s favorite kind of venue to play is festivals. “I love meeting new people of different backgrounds in a high energy stage setting. The environment is always relaxed and comfortable.”

Kevin hails from Fort Lauderdale, FL. He started playing the violin when he was 7 years old. He was in private school until about age 6. While playing in the orchestra and a string quartet with the group Black Violin, he performed major works from major European composers, from Beethoven to Shostakovich! Kevin attended Florida International University in Miami on a music scholarship for Music Performance. “My favorite selections of our own music would be ‘Farewell’ from our Delusions of Grandeur album. Along with ‘Magnifique’ and ‘Redemption.’ My favorite types of events to play are full-fledged shows that we headline. In doing these venues, we can be free and uninhibited musically. magine this. You are on the airport runway awaiting takeoff to the Caribbean for a relaxing week full of fun and sun. Your happy thoughts are suddenly interrupted by a message from the Captain, “Ladies and gentlemen, we had a problem with the fuel truck and were not able to completely fill our plane’s tanks, but we anticipate that we have an 80% probability of reaching our destination. In the interest of time, we will depart as scheduled. Thank you for flying Winging It Airlines.” Even though the chance of not making it to the islands presents only a 20% risk, you would likely run to the exit after such an announcement driven by fear and panic created by a less than full fuel reservoir. Interestingly, when it comes to retirement, many individuals have not adequately “fueled up” their retirement savings but still expect their accounts to somehow financially carry them safely through their retirement years. This is impractical and dangerous. A 2016 survey by the Employee Benefits and Research Institute (EBRI) reveals that only 21% of workers feel very confident about having enough money for a comfortable retirement. Wow! If you thought an 80% chance of arrival was bad on Winging It Airlines, how do you like 21%? 18

Here’s how you can do more to fuel up your retirement savings: • MAX FUND EMPLOYER SPONSORED PLAN – In 2016, $18,000 of pretax contributions are allowed for 401(k), 403(b), or 457(b) retirement plans. This lowers taxable income and enables those dollars to grow tax deferred over your career. For individuals 50 and older, a $6,000 catch up contribution is permissible for a total of $24,000. If you are 49 now but turn 50 before the year ends, you qualify too because the catch up is allowable in in the year you turn 50. • TAKE ADVANTAGE OF PAIRED PLANS WITH NON– Governmental employers like K-12 school districts, state colleges and universities, and state controlled hospitals often offer both 403(b) and 457(b) plans. You may “double defer” $18,000 along with the additional age 50+ catch up of $6,000. That’s a $36,000 pretax saving opportunity if under age 50 and $48,000 if 50+. Nongovernmental employers like private hospitals or 501(c)3 nonprofits may have a traditional 403(b) along with a special 457(b) arrangement known as “Top Hat Plan” that is provided only to a select group of management or highly compensated employees. ooking for the best school for your children can be a bit of a headache. When looking for a good school, what is your criteria? Great learning environment, excellent educators, and a regular classroom environment? Or is it indoor/outdoor classrooms, recess every day, learning gardening or hiking trails? If you said, "YES!" to any of these, Chattahoochee Hills Charter School might be a perfect fit for your child. This school is located right here in South Fulton. "Where is this school?," many ask. Just take the trek down South Fulton Parkway. At first sight, the school looks like a campsite or even constant recess. The unique design of the school does not look like your typical school. Each grade has their learning cottage, which allows natural sunlight and can be easily transformed into an outdoor learning space. In it's first two school years “Chatt Hills,” as the school is affectionately known, has outperformed some of Fulton County’s and the whole state of Georgia’s top schools. How do they do it? They hire some of the best teachers that have loads of imagination and creativity. Also, by incorporating the nature around us into the classroom. Students and parents can’t say enough good things about Chatt Hills. As one of the parents LaShaun Jones put it, “I had been looking for a great learning environment for my child but don't want to have to drive him 30 miles away every day for it. Then this gold mine pops up. Thanks for teaching my son that learning is in his nature through nature.” On any average day on campus, you may catch the principal Walter Butler riding his bike through the outside hallway or students tending to the many of the school’s chickens, rabbits, and goats. I can’t believe I forgot to mention that the school is set on a farm. You may even see classes being held outside. The students seem to flourish in this school environment. Chatt Hills has fewer students missing school due to illness. Even if students were sick, they beg their parents to bring them to school. Our PTO President Michelle Vaughn can attest to this, "I love that my kids are up before me on school days and never want to miss a day! CHCS makes learning more about acquiring knowledge and exploring the world and less about testing!" This is the third school year for Chatt Hills and the school has really grown. The school has gone from 350 students the first year to 600 in it’s third year and 750 on the waiting list to get in. The word is out about this South Fulton gem. Personally, as a parent whose daughter attends Chatt Hills, I can truly say that I love this school for her. Being outside in nature allows for her creativity grow. The academic structure challenges the students and they have fun learning at the same time. This school truly lives up to it's mission, “Learning is in our nature.”

In 2007, after a mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, specifically Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS). I was devastated. I decided to conduct some research and found that the type of breast cancer I was diagnosed with was considered "low grade," and was in the very early stages. The survival rate was very high. Although I had a good breast surgeon, it was extremely empowering to seek and gain knowledge of my health situation. With the support of my family and friends, I had surgery to remove the cancer. After about four years cancer free, I discovered a lump on the breast where I had reconstruction. It was discovered that the breast cancer had resurfaced again and grew into the small lump. I had surgery to remove the small lump and chemotherapy and radiation this time to ensure that there were no other cancer cells left behind. I had chemotherapy and radiation solely for preventive reasons. Mentally, this was a struggle. However, I prayed over it, thought about my then 6 year old son, and decided that I would do anything that I could do to decrease the chances of the cancer coming back, and to increase my chances of survival. I had chemotherapy and radiation for a limited period of time, and it wasn't easy. I hope that learning of my journey encourages people to focus on the importance of regular mammograms and early detection. My initial detection came from a routine examination by my gynecologist who felt "thickening" in my breast. I never felt the area of thickening that the doctor felt. I had no pain or lumps. My second occurrence was detected early because I noticed a change and sought medical attention. I strongly encourage all women to maintain regular self-examinations, doctor examinations, and mammograms. Do your own research, ask CONTINUED >

It was the morning of February 21, 2007. While in the shower performing my monthly breast self-exam, I discovered a small lump in my left breast. Being the conscious person that I am I immediately called my doctor requesting that my annual mammogram be moved up. On week later, I went to my doctor’s office, thinking the visit would be routine in nature. Nothing was routine about this visit. It was the day my life changed forever. After the doctor reviewed the mammogram along with the ultra sound, MRI and the biopsy, I was soon diagnosed with triple negative Stage 1 breast cancer. The hardest thing was telling my husband and children I had breast cancer but through the grace of God, I was able to tell them. On March 15, I had surgery to remove the tumor. In May, I began my mammosite radiation treatment to kill any cancer cells that were lingering in my body. It was important for me to maintain my independence so I continued working and even drove myself to my treatments, extremely tired with no appetite but I persevered. Today, I maintain a healthy diet, drink plenty of water and walk 10 miles a week. I'm so thankful that with the love and support of my husband, family and friends, I’ve been cancer free for nine years! s we kiss the final days of summer heat goodbye, you can find 10 eight year old girls on Cascade Road on the southwest side of Atlanta, GA, gathering to read their most recent book selection. They are always filled with excitement to share their thoughts about what was read and an added bonus to the story is enjoying some tasty treats together. It all began on September 13, 2015 with the inaugural meeting that would become the Something Beautiful Book Club for Girls. This unique book club is the brainchild of Miss Myla Randall, daughter of Dr. Janine Epps Randall. A few years ago, Myla was six years old and became fascinated with her mother’s Sunday afternoon book club meetings. She observed their discussions and how much fun they had sharing ideas and having delicious food. After a typical afternoon meeting, Myla asked her mother to help her form a book club for her friends. She thought that she would have a lot of fun reading books with her friends too. Myla didn’t want to just read books, but she was interested in reading books with people who looked like her in the story. Dr. Randall thought this was an excellent idea and called several of Myla's friends’ parents and invited their daughters to join. The group name was suggested by one book club friend’s mother, Dr. RJ Verwayne. Membership for the Something Beautiful Book Club was made simple by having each girl receive a personalized bookmark as her official membership card. The group of girls in the book club include: Myla Randall, Adriana Verwayne, Alyn Baudy, Sophia Ponce, Raina Gantt, Anaiah Roberts, Gabrielle Domengeaux, Ava Taylor, Linda Ward, and Alexandria Taylor. The girls meet quarterly, and choose a book with subject matter that interests them. They have lively discussions, eat a healthy catered lunch and complete an art project that incorporates themes from each book they read. In this safe and caring book club environment, the girls have formed a lasting friendship and they have a place to learn how to handle peer pressure, seek positive ways to face challenges at school, with reinforcing images to promote self -acceptance and positive body images. With every book, the girls explore new ideas, improve their reading skills and develop public speaking techniques. As a culmination of activities that have been accomplished in the book club, they visited the Decatur Book Festival to meet local authors and other book enthusiasts. The festival will be another way to help book club members have enriching experiences through the Something Beautiful Book Club which is meant to empower the girls to read stories and also be the teller of their own stories.
